Violence is learned and passed on from generation to generation. Intervention at the level of the perpetrator and the victim are not enough to prevent the next generation from continuing this pattern. Their children also need professional attention. In groups with siblings encompassing large age differences, challenging new dimensions are offered to the treatment of children of violent families. Group process and content are outlined during the transition from parent to grandparent during a teenage daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy. This paper discusses groups consisting of patients with life-threatening illnesses and their families. An existential focal conflict concerning death, consisting of the wish to continue to be, opposed by the fear that non-being is inevitable, is described. This conflict and attempts at a group solution are presented as being reflected in various group properties, such as group composition, the role of the leader, group development and major therapeutic factors. It is concluded that the group provides a solution to the fear of nonbeing by functioning as a community where the memory of those who have died can be mourned, preserved and cherished. Residents on a heavy nursing care floor suffer physical and cognitive impairments. As their conditions deteriorate, it is often difficult for families to maintain significant roles. This article discusses a study on the patterns of interaction in the multi-family group therapy. A research instrument was developed to score speakers in sequence in the multi-family therapy group. The findings from this study reflect the ways in which natural helping procedures and elements of professional helping procedures are combined. This study contributes to the body of knowledge which has been developed for the systematic investigation of social work practice. It provides a method whereby the structured observation of practice may be accomplished. The method allows for the examination of both the process and the content of social work practice.

An approach to multi-family group therapy for utilization in social work practice is outlined. Professional help is combined with peer and non peer help within and across families to attain the goal of altered interaction patterns within families. Consideration also is given to the development of the multi-family therapy group as an entity. The patterns of interaction in the multi-family therapy group, were investigated. A case study of a closed time-limited group was developed with a practitioner-researcher design. The data collection utilized structured observation and audio-tape recordings. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The approach to multi-family group therapy described in this paper was developed through the writer's experience as a practitioner nonresidential multi-family therapy groups located in mental health and in pediatric settings. A child or an adolescent was the identified client. The writer also has used the knowledge gained from the empirical research which she conducted into this modality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
