The article presents an interview with Jim Riley, guitarist of U.S. country music group Rascal Flatts, about his career. Riley started taking drum lessons at 12 years old and got involved with the Youth Symphony in Boston, Massachusetts during his sophomore year in high school. After resigning from a teaching job, he joined a Christian band out of Orlando, Florida. Riley describes bandleader Mark Chestnutt's music as a mix of country, Western swing and Cajun music.

In conclusion, the authors believe that younger high-demand patients should be offered the option of surgical repair; can be performed through the preferred single anterior incision with two suture anchors. Chronic tears, even with retraction, may be successfully reconstructed using a free tendon graft, often the flexor carpi radialis.

Segregation of alleles at the L1.28 locus in members of four informative families with X-linked retinitis pigmentosa was consistent with linkage between the loci for L1.28 and X-linked retinitis pigmentosa. Linkage analysis showed that the best estimate for the recombination distance in these families is 10 centimorgans. When our data are combined with the previously published linkage data, we conclude that the genetic distance between the two loci is 5 centimorgans, or approximately 5 million base pairs of DNA, with a 90% confidence interval of 1.5 to 14 centimorgans.

An on-line thermogravimetry/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TG/GC/MS) system has been constructed through additions to and appropriate modifications of commercially available instruments. The system employed a Du Pont 951 thermogravimetric analyzer coupled to a Hewlett-Packard 5890 gas chromatograph/5970 mass selective detector system. A nickel tube, inserted directly into the area immediately above the TG sample pan, acted as a transfer line. An adsorbent trap with a heater and a heated six-way valve was installed between the TG and the GC. The volatile compounds generated from selected materials in the TG were adsorbed by the trap. After the heating and purging process, the trap was rapidly heated and the volatile compounds in the trap were swept into the GC injector and were then analyzed by GC/MS. The on-line TG/GC/MS system was examined by using selected natural products. A number of volatile compounds were generated from the samples by TG, separated by GC and identified by MS. The stability, the weight loss, and the evolution of compounds from the materials could be analyzed and studied.

An SFC/MS system has been constructed through additions and appropriate modifications to a GC/MS instrument. Supercritical fluid conditions were effected by transport of liquid carbon dioxide mobile phase through a micro pump to the injector and then into a fused silica capillary column. Two approaches to a successful coupling of the resultant effluent to the GC/MS system in order to yield EI mass spectra have been demonstrated. In one configuration, an open-split GC/MS interface was used to eliminate excess mobile phase. Inside the heated interface was a frit restrictor connected to a deactivated, uncoated fused silica capillary column (also heated) which functioned as a transfer line into the ion source. An alternate configuration omitted the open-split interface and located the frit restrictor inside the ion source. A specially fabricated stainless steel rod, heated by the ion source heater, had a conical opening into which the restrictor tip was positioned and also heated. In both configurations, a turbomolecular pump was used in the ion source. In the above systems, EI mass spectra were satisfactorily produced without ion-molecule contributions or carbon dioxide clusters. The resulting spectra can thus be searched against a conventional mass spectral library for the identification of compounds separated by supercritical fluid chromatography.

Density-dependent regulation of cell growth in tissue culture is a well-known phenomenon but the mechanism of regulation remains obscure. Here we explore the effects of cell density and metabolite flux on the collective dynamics of a cell population. The intracellular dynamics are modelled by positive feedback kinetic mechanisms of the kind known to apply to yeast cells. Several experimental observations related to glycolytic oscillations are predicted and it is suggested that the general conclusions may be applicable in a broader context.

The Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) locus has been localized to the short arm of the human X chromosome (Xp21) by detection of structural abnormalities1–5and by genetic linkage studies6–8. A library highly enriched for human DNA from Xp21 was constructed9using DNA isolated from a male patient who had a visible deletion and three X-linked disorders (DMD, retinitis pigmentosa and chronic granulomatous disease)5. Seven cloned DNA probes from this library and the probe 754 (refs 5,8) are used in the present study to screen for deletions in the DNA isolated from 57 unrelated males with DMD. Five of these DMD males are shown to exhibit deletions for one of the cloned DNA segments and at least 38 kb of surrounding DNA. In addition, two subclones from the same region detect four restriction fragment length polymorphisms which exhibit no obligate recombination with DMD in 34 meiotic events. These new DNA segments will complement the existing Xp21 probes4–9for use in carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis of DMD. Elucidation of the end points of the five deletions will help delineate the extent of the DMD locus and ultimately lead to an understanding of the specific sequences involved in DMD.

… constructive restructuring is not something that one can work out on paper and put into practice by the mere adoption of such a program at the denominational level. … Yet one model has appeared on the scene in recent years that demon-strates concretely that a restructuring can take place. This model was the civil rights local movement in which men and women, for all practical purposes, left their local congregation in order to give themselves to this paramount cause. It is this historically recognizable model that gives a clue to what can take place when people are committed to the extent that they will identify themselves with a cause to the point of exclusion, if need be, of their former group identification.

Eighty-eight primigravidas underwent a roll over test performed according to the method suggested by Gant. A single individual performed the tests, and the results were withheld from the physician taking care of the patient. After delivery, 14 cases were excluded for various reasons, and, of the remaining 74 patients, 27 had negative results. Of these, 19 (70.4) results were true negative and 8 (29.6) were false negative. Forty-seven patients had a positive roll over test, of whom 35 (74.5) did not develop hypertension in pregnancy and 12 (25.5) did. The authors' results did not confirm the reliable predictive ability of the roll over test as reported by Gant and other investigators.
