4. Sleep as an Important Target or Modifier in Alcohol Use Disorder Clinical Treatment: Example From a Recent Gabapentin Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract

Objectives: Alcohol consumption affects sleep both in healthy populations and in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, sleep has typically not been considered within AUD pharmacotherapy trials. We used data from a completed gabapentin clinical treatment trial to explore the medication's effect on patient-rated insomnia measured by a standard insomnia rating (Insomnia Severity Index [ISI]) and whether this influenced gabapentin's effects on alcohol consumption. Methods: This study included 90 individuals with current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual ofMental Disorders, Fifth Edition AUD criteria reporting current or past alcoholwithdrawal. Participantswere assigned to placebo or gabapentin (up to 1200 mg/day) for a 16-week randomized controlled trialwith percent heavy drinking days (PHDD) and percent abstinent days (PDA) as outcomes. Utilizing mixed-effects models, this study assessed medication effects on ISI over the trial. We then examined the interaction of baseline ISI and medication on drinking. Finally, given our previous finding of alcohol withdrawal influencing gabapentin efficacy, we added change in ISI as a potential "moderator" of the interaction of medication effects and alcohol withdrawal on drinking. Results: Sleep (ISI) improved more in those treated with gabapentin (60.6% reduction) compared with placebo (37.8% reduction; P = 0.013). Higher baseline ISI predicted drinking in gabapentin-treated individuals (lower PHDD [P = 0.026] and higher (PDA [P = 0.047]). ISI was an independent predictor of PHDD decrease and PDA increase (P < 0.001; P = 0.002), but this did not significantly moderate gabapentin's effectiveness. Conclusions: Although gabapentin positively impacts both alcohol use and sleep, its effect on drinking is not fully dependent on sleep improvement, implying a direct biological mechanism on alcohol use. 5. Chemical Stability of Fine-Grained Ceramics Based on Nd0.33Zr2(PO4)3Phosphate with Kosnarite Structure at Elevated Temperatures

Abstract

Abstract: The chemical stability of Nd0.33Zr2(PO4)3fine-grained ceramics, which can be used for immobilization of rare earth elements (REE) that are part of high-level waste was studied. Single-phase Nd0.33Zr2(PO4)3submicron powders with the structure of the mineral kosnarite were prepared by colloid-chemical synthesis. Powders were prepared by successive annealing at 600, 800, and 900°C for 6 h at each stage. Nd0.33Zr2(PO4)3ceramic was Nd0.33Zr2(PO4)3ceramics was produced using spark plasma sintering method (SPS). The relative density of the ceramic was 89.9%; the average grain size was 5–20 μm. The chemical stability of the ceramic in the static mode at 90°C in distilled water and mineral water, as well as in acidic media (0.1 M HCl) and alkaline media (0.01 M NaOH), was studied. The ceramics have high hydrolytic stability. The influence of the contact medium on the rate and mechanism of Nd leaching from the surface of Nd0.33Zr2(PO4)3fine-grained ceramic samples was studied. The de Groot-van der Sloot model was used to analyze the resulting leaching rate Riagainst time tof experiment. Nd leaching occurs by dissociation of Nd from the ceramic surface in acidic medium, diffusion from the inner layers in alkaline medium and mineral water, and dissolution of the ceramic surface layer in distilled water.

6. Extended Modeling and Experimental Study of the Li+-Ionic Conductivity in Li1.5+xAl0.5Ge1.5SixP3–xO12, x= 0; 0.1

Abstract

The Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3(LAGP) and Li1.6Al0.5Ge1.5P2.9Si0.1O12(LAGPS) compounds with the NASICON structure have been studied both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical approach involved analyzing free space in crystal structures (geometrical-topological analysis, GT), calculating ion migration energies using the bond valence site energy (BVSE) method, and determining ionic conductivity at various temperatures through kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also applied to obtain precise results. While the GT and BVSE analyses revealed similar three-dimensional lithium-ion migration maps for both LAGP and LAGPS structures, DFT calculations indicated a difference in the migration energies: LAGP exhibited a 3D migration energy of 0.84 eV, whereas LAGPS showed a lower energy of 0.57 eV. At the same time, 1D and 2D Li ion diffusions have a lower migration energy. LAGP and LAGPS glass-ceramics were obtained successfully, and their samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. This confirmed the absence of residual glass phases in the samples, as expected. Atomic force microscopy data showed the formation of a continuous texture in both samples. Impedance spectroscopy was used to measure conductivity in the range of −45 to 140 °C. This revealed the absence of any phase transitions in the structures. At various temperatures, the contributions of the bulk and grain-boundary components to the total conductivity were determined. The LAGPS sample showed a higher grain-boundary conductivity and total conductivity compared to those of the LAGP sample, which coincides well with the theoretical results.

7. Plasticity of photorespiratory carbon concentration mechanism in Sedobassia sedoides(Pall.) Freitag & G. Kadereit under elevated CO2concentration and salinity

Abstract

Rising atmospheric CO2(carbon dioxide) concentrations and salinization are manifestations of climate change that affect plant growth and productivity. Species with an intermediate C3–C4type of photosynthesis live in a wide range of precipitation, temperature, and soil quality, but are more often found in warm and dry habitats. One of the intermediate C3–C4photosynthetic type is C2photosynthesis with a carbon concentration mechanism (CCM) that reassimilates CO2released via photorespiration. However, the ecological significance under which C2photosynthesis has advantages over C3and C4plants remains largely unexplored. Salt tolerance and functioning of CCM were studied in plants from two populations (P1 and P2) of Sedobassia sedoides(Pall.) Freitag & G. Kadereit Asch. species with C2photosynthesis exposed to 4 d and 10 d salinity (200 mM NaCl) at ambient (785.7 mg/m3, aCO2) and elevated (1571.4 mg/m3, eCO2) CO2. On the fourth day of salinity, an increase in Na+content, activity catalase, and superoxide dismutase was observed in both populations. P2 plants showed an increase in proline content and a decrease in photosynthetic enzyme content: rubisco, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), and glycine decarboxylase (GDC), which indicated a weakening of C2and C4characteristics under salinity. Treatment under 10 d salinity led to an increased Na+content and activity of cyclic electron flow around photosystem I (PSI CEF), a decreased content of K+and GDC in both populations. P1 plants showed greater salt tolerance, which was assessed by the degree of reduction in photosynthetic enzyme content, PSI CEF activity, and changes in relative growth rate (RGR). Differences between populations were evident under the combination of eCO2and salinity. Under long-term salinity and eCO2, more salt-tolerant P1 plants had a higher dry biomass (DW), which was positively correlated with PSI CEF activity. In less salt-tolerant P2 plants, DW correlated with transpiration and dark respiration. Thus, S. sedoidesshowed a high degree of photosynthetic plasticity under the influence of salinity and eCO2through strengthening (P1 plants) and weakening C4characteristics (P2 plants).

Abstract

We evaluated the effectiveness and safety of direct-acting antivirals in adolescents with hepatitis C (HCV)/HIV coinfection using pooled individual patient-level data from 5 European cohorts. Of 122 participants in follow-up from November 2013 to August 2021, 19 were treated <18 years of age; of 15 with HCV RNA available at/after 12 weeks post-treatment, all had sustained virologic response with acceptable safety. This evidence addresses an important gap in knowledge of treatment outcomes in adolescents with HCV/HIV coinfection in real-life settings.

14. Physical and γ-ray shielding properties of Vietnam's natural stones: An extensive experimental and theoretical study

Abstract

The current work deals with investigation of the gamma ray shielding properties for various natural stones from Vietnam to be applied in the radiation shielding applications. The physical and chemical properties affecting the γ-ray shielding performance were examined. The MH-300A density meter was utilized to measure the density (ρ, g/cm3) of stone samples, as well as the chemical composition of Vietnamese natural stones was measured using the X-ray fluorescence analyzer (Olympus X-5000). The study shows that the increase in Fe + Ca concentrations within the stone samples increases their density (from 2.48 to 2.86 g/cm3) accompanied with a reduction in the porosity (Φ, %) (from 8.23 to 0.15%) and water absorption (K, %) (from 3.42 to 0.05%) factors. Additionally, the increase in Fe + Ca concentrations increases the linear attenuation coefficient (μ, cm−1) of the studied stones, where the Vietnamese marble stone (M 3.1) with the highest Fe + Ca concentration (65.97 wt%) has the highest linear attenuation coefficient which varied between 3.781 and 0.155 cm−1with raising the gamma ray energy between 0.040 and 1.332 MeV.

15. Thermoelectric Properties of Zinc Oxide Doped with Aluminum and Nickel Ions

Abstract

Abstract: In this work, a thermoelectric material with the nominal composition Zn0.97Al0.02Ni0.01O is synthesized using the chemical coprecipitation method. The synthesized powder consists of the main phase of wurtzite with a small content of Ni1–zZnzO; the change in the crystal-lattice parameters of the main phase indicates the replacement of Zn2+with Al3+. The Ni1–zZnzO phase is predominantly located at the grain boundaries, blocking their growth during spark-plasma sintering. The resulting morphology enhances phonon scattering processes, which leads to a decrease in thermal conductivity. The electrical conductivity exhibits activation behavior and increases significantly in comparison with undoped ZnO, because the concentration of charge carriers increases with the substitution of Zn2+/Al3+. Thus, the chemical coprecipitation method allows one to obtain doped ZnO with an increase in thermoelectric performance of more than 2 times relative to undoped ZnO.

Abstract

With the advance of on-chip nanophotonics, there is a high demand for high-refractive-index and low-loss materials. Currently, this technology is dominated by silicon, but van der Waals (vdW) materials with a high refractive index can offer a very advanced alternative. Still, up to now, it was not clear if the optical anisotropy perpendicular to the layers might be a hindering factor for the development of vdW nanophotonics. Here, we studied WS2-based waveguides in terms of their optical properties and, particularly, in terms of possible crosstalk distance. Surprisingly, we discovered that the low refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the atomic layers improves the characteristics of such devices, mainly due to expanding the range of parameters at which single-mode propagation can be achieved. Thus, using anisotropic materials offers new opportunities and novel control knobs when designing nanophotonic devices.

Abstract

The emergence of a topological transition of the polaritonic dispersion in twisted bilayers of anisotropic van der Waals materials at a given twist angle—the photonic magic angle—results in the diffractionless propagation of polaritons with deep-subwavelength resolution. This type of propagation, generally referred to as canalization, holds promise for the control of light at the nanoscale. However, the existence of a single photonic magic angle hinders such control since the canalization direction in twisted bilayers is unique and fixed for each incident frequency. Here we overcome this limitation by demonstrating multiple spectrally robust photonic magic angles in reconfigurable twisted α-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3) trilayers. We show that canalization of polaritons can be programmed at will along any desired in-plane direction in a single device with broad spectral ranges. These findings open the door for nanophotonics applications where on-demand control is crucial, such as thermal management, nanoimaging or entanglement of quantum emitters.
