The Boyd approach is a single-incision posterior approach to the proximal radius and ulna based on a lateral anconeus muscle reflection and release of the lateral collateral ligamentous complex. This approach remains a lesser-used technique following early reports of proximal radioulnar synostosis and postoperative elbow instability. Although limited by small case series, recent literature does not support these early reported complications. This study presents a single surgeon's outcomes using the Boyd approach for the treatment of simple to complex elbow injuries. Following institutional review board approval, a retrospective review of all patients with simple to complex elbow injuries treated consecutively using a Boyd approach by a shoulder and elbow surgeon was conducted from 2016 to 2020. All patients with at least 1 postoperative clinic visit were included. Data collected included patient demographics, injury description, postoperative complications, elbow range of motion, and radiographic findings including heterotopic ossification and proximal radioulnar synostosis. Categorical and continuous variables were reported using descriptive statistics. A total of 44 patients were included with an average age of 49 years (range 13-82 years). The most commonly treated injuries were Monteggia fracture-dislocations (32%) and terrible triad injuries (18%). Average follow-up was 8 months (range 1-24 months). Final average elbow active arc of motion was from 20° (range 0°-70°) of extension to 124° (range 75°-150°) of flexion. Final supination and pronation were 53° (range 0°-80°) and 66° (range 0°-90°), respectively. There were no cases of proximal radioulnar synostosis. Heterotopic ossification contributing to less than functional elbow range of motion occurred in 2 (5%) patients who elected conservative management. There was 1 (2%) case of early postoperative posterolateral instability due to repair failure of injured ligaments that required revision using a ligament augmentation procedure. Five (11%) patients experienced postoperative neuropathy, including 4 (9%) with ulnar neuropathy. Of these, 1 underwent ulnar nerve transposition, 2 were improving, and 1 had persistent symptoms at final follow-up. This is the largest case series available demonstrating the safe utilization of the Boyd approach for the treatment of simple to complex elbow injuries. The use of environmentally friendly bio-pesticides is crucial for higher root and sugar yield in sugar beets. The economic importance of beet moth [Scrobipalpa ocellatella Boyd. (Lepidoptera: Gelechidae)] losses in the field and storage highlight the need for evaluation of appropriate, environmentally friendly methods for pest control. The aims of the present study were to i) assess azadirachtin (AZN) effects on the life cycle and activity of the pest, and ii) manage the beet moth on roots under laboratory conditions. For the experiments, the main concentrations were prepared on the basis of the field-recommended dose of this pesticide (1-1.5 l/1000 l water). The LC50 was estimated for 3rd instar larvae. Later, at sublethal concentrations, the relative time for the emergence of each developmental stage was determined. The mean female fecundity was 37% (±4) for treated tests at the lowest AZN concentration (0.5 ml · l-1). Assess azadirachtin at 0.5 ml · l-1 concentration resulted in 62 (±4) deposited eggs per plant for the treated roots and 326 (±1) for roots in the control test. Mortality increased in response to increased AZN concentrations. The results revealed that after 72 h, the highest AZN concentration (2.5 ml · l-1) caused 100% repellency and 82% (±1.38) mortality on 3rd instar larvae. According to our findings, a concentration of 2 ml · l-1 AZN (20 gr active ingredient per 1 hectare) after 4 days affected 1st instar larvae and the larvae with no further development had 92.2% (±1.2) mortality. In conclusion, the results revealed that AZN as a biorational pesticide can significantly minimize the losses of S. ocellatella on sugar beet crops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper uses the personal histories of two men, born in the same decade and both involved in the field of adult education in Scotland, to illustrate contrasting responses to the social and political changes taking place in the early 20th century. In methodological terms, it draws on recent writing on the relationship between biography and history. Both men came from working class backgrounds, attended Glasgow University and considered becoming church ministers. But both retreated from a religious vocation, one retaining his faith, the other rejecting it completely and replacing it with political ideology. Their very different types of involvement in adult education are described and analysed, noting in particular their opposing views on the Workers' Educational Association. Possible reasons for their divergent pathways are explored in the final section. How much can be attributed to family background, individual psychology, networks of associates, attitudes to existing institutions, and a desire to promote greater social justice? How successful were their efforts to encourage community development (in one case) and class consciousness (in the other)? Why has one become a folk hero of the political left while the other, notwithstanding a strong public profile during his lifetime and a distinguished academic career which gained him international recognition, has been consigned to historical footnotes? While no definitive conclusions can be drawn, the analysis serves to illustrate the complex connections between personal biography and social history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the contribution of William Boyd (1874-1962) to the development of educational studies in the first half of the twentieth century. It traces his involvement in, and contribution to, many different fields of enquiry that were important in the subsequent evolution of education as an academic discipline. As Head of the Education Department at the University of Glasgow for nearly forty years, Boyd was able to initiate a range of activities which prepared the ground for the efforts of later researchers. It will be shown that he was ahead of his time in promoting progressive ideas (partly through the New Education Fellowship), in advocating the involvement of classroom teachers in educational research, and in realising the importance of adult education as part of community development. Although Boyd was a prominent public figure and acquired an international reputation, he was never awarded a professorship: the paper concludes by discussing possible reasons for this and by suggesting areas for more detailed investigation of his achievements. Introduction: The optimal surgical technique for a distal biceps tendon rupture repair still remains controversial. Current biomechanical evidence shows Endobutton fixation to have the highest load-to-failure testing, but clinical results of this are limited. The purpose of this study was to compare patient-oriented functional outcome between a modified Boyd–Anderson two-incision technique and repair with a single-incision Endobutton technique.Methods: All patients who underwent distal biceps tendon repair with a two-incision or Endobutton technique between 2000 and 2010 with two-year follow-up at our institution were identified. Their clinical, operative, and follow-up data was collected and analyzed. The primary outcome was a patient-oriented functional outcome measure (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand: DASH). Secondary outcomes were evaluated using a subjective questionnaire.Results: Thirty-three patients were repaired with the two-incision technique and twenty-five patients had a repair with a single incision Endobutton technique. All patients receiving the two-incision repair were male, while there were 2 females who had an Endobutton procedure. There was no significant difference between the two-incision and the Endobutton groups in regards to mean DASH score (6.31 versus 5.91, p = 0.697), mean Work DASH score (10.49 versus 0.93, p = 0.166), and mean Sports DASH score (10.54 versus 9.56, p = 0.987). Regardless of technique, most patients were “extremely satisfied” (n = 42, or 72.41%) or “satisfied” (n = 10, or 17.24%) postoperatively, and returned to pre-operative activity in approximately 6 months (6.87 months versus 6.82 months, respectively) (p = 0.457). There was no significant difference in the prevalence of complications (39.39% versus 32.0%, respectively for two incision versus single incision) (p = 0.594).Conclusion: Patients from both surgical groups were satisfied with their post-operative function and had similar functional outcomes and complication rates. This study of novelist James Boyd and the Pilot of Southern Pines, North Carolina, during the World War II years widens the notion of what a country weekly editor can be or can do. In the shadow of Pinehurst, the renowned and tradition-bound golf resort, Boyd rescued his failing hometown weekly newspaper, editorializing in favor of an early entry into the war, civil rights for blacks, and equal rights for women. He also called for adherence to free speech and the Bill of Rights amid a national climate increasingly intolerant of dissent. Contrary to previous scholarship on the southern country weekly, this article about the Pilot shows that not all were conservative and anti-New Deal. It also shows that noteworthy journalism and commentary were not the exclusive province of the nation's major metropolitan dailies. Boyd's newspaper work during the pivotal pre-Pearl Harbor period in 1941 through his death in 1944 at age 55 is illuminating, demonstrating how an editor might negotiate the proper role between journalism and the government and readers in wartime. The article reports on research which was conducted to investigate the effectiveness and safety of Boyd amputation in adults with foot ulcerations linked to diabetes mellitus and peripheral artery disease. Researchers performed 15 amputations on 14 adult patients. They found that despite a high failure rate which is associated with Boyd amputation, it is still a good option in some patients.
