The concept of the vanishing mediator is basically a theory concentrating on a mediation that ceases when its task is complete. However fundamental its function is, it still has nuances that are, when juxtaposed altogether, quite differing. What I intend to do in this paper is to develop the concept to be utilized as a theoretical framework for further researches. To do that, I will: 1) succinctly clarify theory both in its essence and its being a concept through symbolic logic; 2) review related literature and tabulate the recently cited related works on the vanishing mediator; 3) frame a structure or methodology and discuss its nuances based on the common references strategically extracted; 4) attempt to develop a refined version of it and its process through synthesis; and later, 5) present areas or topics in some selected disciplines where the concept can be applied as conclusion. The article describes the case of the need to establish categories if an organization of terms is to serve information retrieval. It tackles the systemic indexing developed by Julius Otto Kaiser, the use of the expression "literature" with "text" by Kaiser, synthesis in systemic indexing and the kinds of index terms.

This article revolves around J. S. Anand's theory of biotext, theorized as the virtual Third Space which encompasses author, text, and context. It brings together the theoretical notions of Anand (India), Deleuze (France), and Bakhtin (Russia) on a comparative scale, hence a crosscultural phenomenon. It is argued that biotext is the meeting point between Bkahtin's dialogism and Deleuze's temporal synthesis. Bakhtin defines man in terms of language which is inherently dialogic; hence for him identity is defined in self-other relation. Deleuze bases self-other relation on temporal syntheses and presents it in a constant flux. What interlinks Bakhtin to Deleuze is Bakhtin's view that language is inevitably context-oriented; context, for Deleuze, is a synthetic process which happens in temporal scheme. A process of being thought together, synthesis is argued to be dialogic. Biotext is the Deleuzian virtual realm which crystallizes the dialogic relation between language and context, and is therefore synthetic. Any dialogism for Bakhtin is unavoidably ideological, hence politically partial. It is argued that unlike Bhabhalian Third Space which is dehistoricized and depoliticizing, Anand's biotext conforms, albeit temporarily, to an ideological stance, either of the text, of the author, or of the allegiance provoked by the reader/author's context. The paper is devoted to the crucial issue of inter- and trans-disciplinary research: the synthesis. Its aim is to contribute to the enhancement of the scientific quality of integrated knowledge. The synthesis is the common result that has to be achieved through processes of integration. In order to be successful and lead to scientifically valid results, such processes of integration have to be convincing in terms of methods and in terms of epistemology. However, in inter- and trans-disciplinary projects, the fact that methods of integration have to be chosen and described in a way that allows a judgement of the validity and scope of findings is often neglected. Furthermore, there is a marked lack of concern in many such projects about the epistemic challenges that should be met in order to integrate knowledge originating from different fields. We introduce the “Inventory of Synthesis”, an instrument developed to facilitate the epistemic analysis and description of the integrated results of inter- or trans-disciplinary research and to identify where methods of integration are needed. This instrument thus helps to link the connected issues of the epistemic structure of the synthesis and of the choice of integration methods. Referring to the results of an interview study, we discuss the special challenge trans-disciplinary research has to cope with in dealing with non-academic knowledge. We endorse a double perspective, one from the point of view of inquiring into processes of integration and one from the point of view of designing and implementing them. Because we observe how the scholarly discourse on inter- and trans-disciplinary research and the demands accompanying the practical work in such projects risk drifting apart, we call for an approach to integration taking into account research findings on such processes and for research into integration informed by practical needs.
