The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has consistently been described as an "unprecedented" global health crisis. While the focus has been primarily on the medical and economic impact of the pandemic, psychological sequelae are anticipated. Primary care is the main point of access for mental health care in the United States, making it the ideal locale to provide psychological services for a larger proportion of the population than traditional mental health care settings. The aim of this paper is to describe how our multi-state, multi-site integrated primary care program adapted and applied cognitive behavioral therapy in the context of COVID-19. Access to mental health care was disrupted despite burgeoning mental health concerns, necessitating novel approaches to providing care. A stepped-care approach was implemented within our primary care practice, which consisted of a combination of low-intensity, high-yield stress management and resiliency building resources and cognitive behavioral therapy that were delivered flexibly based on patient preference, technological capabilities, state ordinances, insurance coverage, and institutional policies. Background: Generic mental health staff often have contact with people with intellectual disabilities when they access mainstream mental health services. To date, there has not been any research conducted in non-western countries to explore their views. This paper investigates the views and experiences of mainstream mental health professionals regarding the mental health services for people with intellectual disabilities in Singapore. Methods: Eight staff members from generic mental health services were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to identify main themes. Findings: The main themes are related to their work experiences, perceptions of people with intellectual disabilities, ideal staff characteristics and service recommendations. Conclusions: Participants identified a lack of experience and knowledge when working with this population. They highlighted the challenges they face promoting choice and autonomy for people with intellectual disabilities. The discussion includes recommendations for improving staff knowledge through training opportunities, consideration of non-pharmacological approaches and early collaboration with caregivers during the treatment process. Mental health problems are becoming more common while access to treatment is often not available to everyone who needs help. Recent advances in information technology, the wide availability of the internet, the emergence of smartphones and their common usage worldwide raise hope for more treatment options for mental health disorders. Many mobile phone apps that claim to assist in treating a variety of mental health disorders are already available, and the number of such apps continues to increase. The availability of such apps raises many questions about their effectiveness, suitable treatment methods, possibilities for use alongside traditional treatment methods, possible risks and other uncertainties. Beside mobile apps, internet-based apps are also being introduced with similar sets of challenges and ambiguities. One area of research that is gaining a lot of attention recently is Persuasive System Design and Behavior Change. Persuasive System Design is considered one solution that has the potential to help solve the challenges of lack of user motivation and adherence when utilizing mental health applications. The goal of this paper is to perform a literature review, in order to determine the most essential requirements for a persuasively designed mental health application. Access to adequate, much less state-of-the-art, mental health care is a global problem. Natural disasters, civil war, and terrorist conflict have forcibly displaced millions of Muslims and have resulted in a remarkable level of individual and communitywide trauma exposure. As a result, many are at risk for posttraumatic stress and other trauma-related disorders. Many religiously oriented Muslims traditionally rely on Islamic principles and teachings, as well as their community, to cope with and address trauma-related distress. Islamic Trauma Healing is a six-session, lay-led group intervention developed within a Somali Muslim community that integrates evidence-based trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy principles with cultural and religious practices aimed to enhance uptake and create an easily up-scalable intervention for a wide range of trauma. In sessions, narratives of prophets who have undergone trauma (e.g., Prophet Ayyub, faith during hard times) present Islamic principles and facilitate cognitive shifts. Group members spend individual time turning to Allah in dua (i.e., informal prayer), focused on exposure to trauma memories. Program themes arc across suffering to healing to growth following trauma. This paper describes the core theoretical principles and methods in the Islamic Trauma Healing program. We also describe leader perspectives and the program's train-the-trainer model, in which lay leaders are trained to further disseminate the program and allow Islamic Trauma Healing to be owned and sustained by the Muslim community. The impact of navigating one's mental health in a rural community is a unique lived experience because of the many barriers associated with seeking and receiving mental health services. Using arts-based visual ethnography and an analysis of 47 semi-structured interviews, we examine the lived experiences of navigating mental health struggles and healthcare infrastructure in a rural community in the western United States. To do so, we leverage the tenets 'social exclusion' in tandem with an 'availability, accessibility, acceptability, and appropriateness' framework to situate our analysis centered around three key, intertwined themes: the internalized shame and stigmatization experienced by rural people with mental health struggles, exclusionary communal attitudes and practices that exacerbate rural individuals' experiences, and an unreliable, fragmented rural mental healthcare infrastructure that further aggravates the individual and community-level experiences of stigmatization and mental health struggles. Purpose - No occupational therapy outcome measures have been designed specifically for recovery-orientated services. This paper aims to identify occupational therapy outcome measures relevant to mental health practice and assess them against recovery principles adopted by Irish Mental Health Services. Design/methodology/approach - A narrative review methodology was used to appraise outcome measures against CHIME recovery principles. Findings - A systematic search across 13 databases identified eight well-established outcome measures commonly used within occupational therapy mental health literature. The included outcome measures were appraised using a recovery alignment tool. Practical implications - All outcome measures connected to some recovery processes. Those using semi-structured interview formats and notably the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) had the strongest alignment to recovery processes. Originality/value - This is the first known review which provides some validation that the included outcome measures support recovery processes, yet the measures rely heavily on therapist's skills for processes to be facilitated. This paper analyzes the use of psychoactive drugs by juvenile offenders in Brazil in socio-educational facilities (USEs). It describes the guidelines of the national public policy and the quality of mental healthcare coordination by subnational public governments. This work draws on the hypothesis that USEs vertical governance is associated with the use of psychoactive medication. This is comparative study of two cases in Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais. Data resulted from a sample of medical records and interviews with key informants. The paper shows that vertical governance observed in Rio Grande do Sul is directly associated with high prevalence of mental health disorder diagnosis, use of psychoactive medication and psychiatric medicalization by juvenile offenders deprived of liberty. These findings indicate that sanctions of imprisonment for illegal acts are producing a set of medicalization decisions that undermine juveniles' health rights. The national mental health policy guidelines encourage cautious decisions. Psychotherapies and rehabilitation actions are the advocated first-line interventions. This paper proposes a set of nine critical elements underpinned by human rights principles to support individuals experiencing a serious crisis related to mental health problems or psychosocial disabilities. These elements are distilled from a range of viable alternatives to traditional community mental health approaches and are linked to a normative human rights framework. We argue that crisis response is one of the areas of mental health care where there is a heightened risk that the rights of service recipients may be infringed. We further make the case that the nine critical elements found in advanced mental health care models should be used as building blocks for designing services and systems that promote effective rights-based care and supports. Throughout the world, mental health remains a neglected priority, low on the agenda of policy makers and funders at the national and international levels. While this is shifting somewhat, there remains a considerable need to address the underprioritization of mental health and well-being, perhaps even more so in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, given the history of mental health interventions--which have overemphasized the biomedical model and have thus resulted in coercion, denial of life in the community, and unnecessary pathologization of human experience--there is also a need to ensure that increased funding does not simply replicate these mistakes. This is particularly true in the current landscape, where efforts to "scale up" mental health and to reduce "treatment gaps" are gaining momentum and where post-pandemic responses are still being formulated. As the potential for global mechanisms for funding mental health increases, national and international funders should look to practices that are rights affirming and contextually relevant. In this paper, I explore the current landscape of mental health financing, in terms of both national resource allocation and development assistance. I then outline the momentum in global mental health that is likely to materialize through increased funding, before considering ways in which that funding might be utilized in a manner that promotes human rights. This treatment development report describes the need for evidence-based psychosocial trauma-focused treatment for people living with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and HIV. Individuals with HIV have higher rates of exposure to traumatic events and PTSD than the general public, and they also experience additional consequences of PTSD on the management of their chronic disease (e.g., established link between PTSD symptoms and lack of adherence to antiretroviral therapy [ART]). We used the empirically supported ADAPT-ITT approach to consider the initial steps in adapting evidence-based Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for individuals with PTSD and HIV. This paper reviews a case example that involved various clinical issues that may arise when providing trauma-focused treatment for people living with HIV including HIV-stigma, disease management, and the need for making multicultural adaptations to psychotherapy. This case example illustrates how trauma-focused treatment may benefit from enhancement to address additional barriers that may arise over the course of PTSD treatment in this population. Feasibility of engaging and delivering a "full dose" of evidence-based PTSD treatment among individuals living with HIV is discussed. While evidence-based treatments can reduce PTSD symptom severity, issues related to chronic disease coping and HIV-related stigma management could be integrated to augment the efficacy of treatment for individuals with HIV. The number of college students suffering from depression has increased in recent years. In order to help the college student administration departments understand students' psychological state of depression better and keep college students mentally healthy through mental health services, this paper studies an intelligent monitoring system for depression. Different from previous researches, this study, based on the cloud services platform, incorporates three indicators closely related to depression-sleeping, exercise and heart rate-into the monitoring database subsystem and establishes a relatively macroscopic intelligent knowledge service system for depression monitoring of college students. It uses the Mobile Material Link Device (MMLD) to collect data and information to monitor and analyze the changes in the depression status of college students dynamically, which also provides timely warnings and a chain of personalized intelligent knowledge services based on individuals' depression status. My artistic practice focuses on the intersectionality of my lived experience of mental health difference as a Thai American woman who has contended with the impacts of the stigma and inequities in mental health care and access. Having been diagnosed with bipolar, I explore my way of being through my art and seek to assess and illuminate my lived experiences through the lens of disability justice and mad pride. My "archive" consists of medication guides, prescription bottles, historical and psychiatric resource materials, and medical texts that discuss mental health conditions. I use these texts and artifacts in my art and investigate systemic and historical legacies to find strength in vulnerability. In my large scale drawings, I use charcoal because of its transformative origins from solid matter and to acknowledge that its activated form absorbs chemicals after a stomach is pumped following an overdose. The smeared charcoal emphasizes outlandishness and an unwillingness to conform, as I resist containment and being categorized. In affirming freedom and individuality, I reveal the human touch behind the marks and processes that spill off the page and ignore the margins. Created during the pandemic, my large scale series of over 80 drawings, "What I have learned. (Fill in the blank.)" on oversized lined paper, 36" x 24," questions how we learn, who is the "educator" and how do we unlearn harm. I mine interactions, relationships and responses to my being from micro aggressions, to stigma, racism, and ableism as well as reflect on current anti-Asian violence. By sharing these texts and images, I allow others who might identify with these experiences to enter a safe space and connect to others to build a community in pursuit of disability justice. Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is well-established as an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet its availability is often limited by a shortage of trained mental health providers. ERP is most frequently provided on a weekly or twice weekly basis; however, research has demonstrated that intensive ERP for OCD is equally efficacious compared to longer-term weekly treatments (e.g., Oldfield, Salkovskis, & Taylor, 2011). Although intensive ERP can provide patients without access to weekly treatment an opportunity to receive treatment in an alternative format, its availability is also limited as most outpatient psychiatry clinics are not structured or experienced with offering this type of service. The goal of the current paper is to provide mental health providers with information and guidance on implementing—through the illustration of a case study—a short-term intensive individualized ERP program for OCD within an outpatient psychiatry clinic that does not routinely offer these services. Special considerations and potential challenges that should be considered when offering this type of intensive treatment are discussed. Using the best available evidence to inform decision making is important for the design or delivery of effective health-related services and broader public policy. Several studies identify barriers and facilitators to evidence-informed decision making in Canadian health settings. This paper describes how the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health, as an intermediary organisation, facilitates evidence-informed decision making at organisational and system levels in Ontario's child and youth mental health sector through two unique knowledge mobilisation services. The involvement of families, carers and significant others (i.e. social support networks) has a positive corollary for a person experiencing mental health problems. Accordingly, in Australia involvement of social support networks within mental health services is endorsed in national health policy and service guidelines. Despite the endorsement, this is yet to be fully realised in all areas that provide mental health services, including emergency departments. Social support networks are integral in the provision of mental health consumers' care. Supporting the involvement of social support networks in the emergency department can provide healthcare services with opportunities for enhanced and cost-effective care, contributing to improved outcomes for consumers. An overview of some of the barriers and facilitators of social support network involvement is provided. The intention of this paper is to encourage reflection and dialogue on this important area of mental health service provision and support the evolution of a new paradigm of research into social support network involvement in the emergency department. Greater medical and psychological concerns coupled with disparities in income and education and experiences with cultural distress have created an unprecedented demand for health and mental health services for Native Hawaiians. With 75% of the healthcare system moving to a value-based system within the next 2 years, a low-cost workforce that brings added value will be in high demand. The addition of community health navigators to an existing integrated patient-centered medical home may result in a culturally congruent, preventive, and responsive model of wellness that promotes health equity. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the culturally-based navigation framework we used to implement a pilot program in an integrated primary care setting, describe the intervention that was used, and examine the lessons learned throughout the process. Outcomes will be provided at a later date. We believe that our model will not only redesign an existing clinical practice but also will provide a reproducible model that can be translated into other settings to increase the health care utilization among Native Hawaiians and lead to improved outcomes. Studies in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) point to a significant association of common mental disorders with female gender, low education, and poverty. Depression and anxiety are frequently complicated by lack of disease awareness and non-adherence, the absence of care and provider resources, low value given to mental health by policy-makers, stigma, and discrimination towards the mentally ill. This paper aims to show that female village leaders/ community health and outreach workers (CHWs) can be used to overcome the lack of psychiatric resources for treatment of common mental disorders in rural areas. A multidisciplinary team was set up to evaluate and treat potential patients in the villages surrounding Mugalur, a primary health care center in rural South India. A programme of care delivery was planned, developed and implemented by: (a) targeting indigent women in the region; (b) integrating mental health care with primary care; (c) making care affordable and accessible by training local women as CHWs with ongoing continued supervision; and (d) sustaining the programme long-term. Indigenous CHWs served as a link between the center and the community. They received hands-on training, ongoing supervision, and were taught using an abridged but focused training module to identify common mental disorders, help treatment compliance, networking, illness literacy and community support for villages by outreach workers. They used assessment tools translated into the local language, and conducted focus groups and patient training programmes. As a result, mental healthcare was provided to patients from as many as 150 villages in South India. Currently the services are utilized on a regular basis by about 50 villages around the central project site. The current active caseload of registered patients is 1930. Empowerment of treated patients is the final outcome, assisting them in self-employment. Rural mental healthcare must be culturally congruent, and must integrate primary care, using local CHWs for success. Introduction: The Psychiatric Reform aims to provide psychiatric patients' treatment within the community. In that way, patients will succeed in living with a functional ordinary everyday activity. Harsh socio-economic conditions in the era of crisis though pose serious obstacles towards the implementation of this reform. Aim: The current review aims to investigate the literature created in the recent years in order to depict causes and circumstances which downgraded the level of Mental Health services provided in the era of financial crisis. Method: There was conducted literature review through multifaceted search within research studies, review papers and reports published in print and digital form in both Greek and English languages. There were also investigated information sources in Pubmed and there was also analyzed the legal and institutional framework on which the mental health services were based upon. Results: Certain parts of population with low income have lost of 24,2% of their income in years between 2009-2012. A 10% of the most destitute part of population lost a 56,5% of their income. The use of antidepressant medication was increased by 34,8% in years between 2006--2011 and suicidal ideas amongst individuals under treatment were increased from 4,5% in 2009 up to 22,7% in 2011. A 40-50% of inpatients in public institutions derives from public prosecutor's order for involuntary hospitalization which in turn results in asphyxiating conditions within those institutions. Conclusions: The increasing shortage of institutional hospices, the increasing number of involuntary hospitalization, the understaffness along with forced restriction of patients as an immediate and safe solution for treatment, accompanied with inadequate coordination of health and general justice services tend to the restrict altogether the judicial and civil rights of inpatients. The inefficient coverage of basic needs in certain parts of population, (youth unemployed, children and their families) requires a more adequate cooperation between health and social welfare professionals and ministry of justice officers in order to wear off the general feeling that "since we serve in an era of low expectations, then we will have low demands as well". Introduction: This paper explores the way dominant discourses, and their associated practice knowledge dimensions, shape personal paradigms and occupation-based practice in mental health workplaces. Method: Narrative inquiry methods and narrative thematic analysis was used to explore the career stories of nine occupational therapists who had worked in mental health practice for more than five years. Findings: The main narrative themes to emerge were (i) living with the biomedical practice knowledge discourse, (ii) living with the psychological practice knowledge discourse and (iii) reflection as a strategy for maintaining occupation-based practice. These discourses created the need to reflect on practice and adopt strategies to avoid the marginalisation of occupational perspectives and occupation-based practice. The strategies used to cope with these discourses varied from acceptance and embracing of other discourses to resistance and rejection. Conclusion: This paper demonstrates that in some mental health workplaces there is a danger that occupational perspectives and occupation-based practice can become marginalised. Making visible the different discourses in mental health practice allows occupational therapists to analyse, better understand, and live with the tensions in their professional lives. Debate continues about what constitutes evidence for outcomes of psychological interventions. There are challenges to operationalise research for post-modernist views of knowledge being multiple and relative rather than singular, fixed, and absolute. This has led to limited empirical evaluation of practices such as narrative therapy. This paper describes the therapy process for eighty women and outcomes for twenty-three women who had experienced domestic violence and were engaged in narrative therapy, utilising the Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS). PCOMS consists of integrating two outcome rating scales into each counselling session - the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) and the Session Rating Scale (SRS). The design of the research was clinical data mining. This paper briefly discusses difficulties and limitations of the concept of evidence-based practice when applied to narrative therapy. The study identifies and defines several different patterns of therapy outcomes. PCOMS was used to demonstrate that clients who were treated for at least six, one-hour sessions of narrative therapy for complex trauma (domestic violence), showed positive outcomes equivalent to other studies using different treatments. Given the significant and increasing mental health challenges faced by society, a new vision for the future of mental health is greatly needed. The determination of individual uniqueness of brain activity - known as 'brain fingerprinting' – shows great promise as a predictor of mental health outcomes, and thus could be the future of personalised mental health care. In this paper, we describe the importance of brain changes in adolescence and how by applying artificial intelligence-based predictive models we can harness the complexity of the underlying neurobiology to proactively address emerging mental health problems. We also describe the issues that the future application of brain uniqueness tracking (or similar) depends on, to provide the greatest value for society. We explore the potential effects of external systemic trends on mental health futures and various scenarios that involve future applications of brain fingerprinting, including a range of potential unintended consequences of this proposed predictive technology and how anticipatory governance can help mitigate such outcomes. Health equity for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) requires collaborative partnerships between primary care and behavioral health organizations. This paper presents the experiences and perspectives of a nurse practitioner in a large-scale pilot program to integrate primary care and behavioral health between an FQHC and a community mental health center, both serving predominantly Asian immigrant populations. This paper discusses lessons learned through program implementation and provides insights on developing a truly integrated system involving equal and full cooperation across disciplines to provide quality and holistic care for patients with SMI. This paper reflects on a previously published practice story of Ray, a 24-year-old Black man from the United States. I seek to demonstrate one way that the ideas of cultural democracy can become actionable within narrative therapy practices, and in doing so, to advocate for a model that moves beyond multicultural counselling. Practitioners in Hong Kong have long sought alternatives to dominant pathologising discourses. In 2001, when Michael White held his first open workshop in Hong Kong, a community of practitioners gathered and began exploring a localised narrative practice. In this paper, we describe the history of narrative practice in Hong Kong. We reflect on how narrative practice has informed social work and counselling practice and challenged individualistic understandings of problems and suffering. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 aims to provide for mental health care and services for persons with mental illness in India and to protect, promote and fulfill the rights of such persons during delivery of mental health care and services. Chapter V of the Act enumerates the rights of persons with mental illness, including the right to equality, right to confidentiality, the right to protection from cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in any mental health establishment (which includes the right to proper clothing so as to protect such person from exposure of his/her body to maintain his/her dignity, and the right to be protected from all forms of physical, verbal, emotional and sexual abuse), right to community living, etc. This paper analyses the provisions of the Act from the perspective of rights of women with mental illness in need of mental health care, and draws a comparison with the relevant provisions of the United Nation Convention of Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This paper proposes a dialogue among specialists from Argentina, Brazil and France, in order to address the different ways of generating knowledge regarding the deinstitutionalization of the mental health care system. Each author's theme specificity responds to the temporariness of local reforms as a fight for a social representation of the insanity as suffering, different of the biomedical mental sickness. From that point on, the knowledge interplay materializes into heterogeneous modalities in light of the psychosocial representation paradigm: (a) implications of research on the transformation of the mental health field: experiences and representations in Argentina; (b) social representation of insanity and the deinstitutionalization practices in Brazil; (c) recognition of the 'patients' expertise: changes in the social representation of insanity, in France. This paper discusses the potential relationship between surveillance techniques, the enactment of security measures, and patient violence in mental health wards. The paper draws upon data from an ethnographic study conducted in a purpose-built mental health unit containing two wards (one locked and one open) in South Australia, and argues that acts of violence observed in the unit were typically preceded by an incident within the unit that was related to the implementation of security measures aimed at controlling non-compliant behaviours. The paper argues that if a relationship between security measures and violence does exist in mental health wards, then close attention must be paid to the ways in which forms of surveillance may arguably exacerbate, rather than prevent, the need for security measures.
