In the paper I examine selected local phenomena related to the history of phenomenology in Central-Eastern Europe and especially in the former Czechoslovakia during the communist period. I use these to show that a specific mode of thinking developed here as a distinctive phenomenological practice. I provide examples from the fields of art history, theory of art, sociology, and art production from the Slovak environment, which represented places of synergy with phenomenology, and its latent presence can be traced in them. With this contribution, I want to take part in the debate on the form of phenomenological historiography, which, under the influence of the research on Central-Eastern phenomenology, has brought about a thematic and methodological expansion of phenomenological historiography. This pertains to specific local phenomena (here I use the concept of marginocentricity) as well as reflections on the relevance of phenomenology for the philosophy of history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. The Shiite as the Heretic Other? The Discourse of Shiite Islam as a Variant of Central European Orientalism.
- Author

- Abstract
The general autonomy of Central European authors from a Western power agenda as postulated by the mainstream critique of Orientalism is well known. At the same time, scholars have paid much less attention to the attitude of the modern Hungarian, Czech, Polish, and Slovenian corpus vis-à-vis Shi'ism, a narrow branch of the subject of Orientalism. This study argues that a certain bias in this context can be identified on the part of regional academics of the twentieth century, which might be explained by personal preferences for Sunni Orthodoxy. Simultaneously, this paper seeks to explore the reasons for such a tendency within the context of specific historical development at the frontiers. To this end, it presents case studies that juxtapose the relevant experiences with the classic Orientalist criticism of Western intellectual life introduced by scholars such as Edward Said, Talal Asad, Joseph Massad, and Mahmood Mamdani. THIS PAPER EXPLORES THE INFLUENTIAL ROLE OF FEMALE AUTHORS DURING THE VICTORIAN ERA AND THEIR USE OF PEN NAMES AS A SUBVERSIVE TACTIC TO CONTRIBUTE TO FEMINIST DISCOURSE. IT EXAMINES HOW THESE AUTHORS, CONSTRAINED BY THE GENDER NORMS OF THEIR TIME, CIRCUMVENTED SOCIETAL BARRIERS BY ADOPTING MALE PSEUDONYMS TO PUBLISH THEIR WORKS. THROUGH A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF TEXTS BY AUTHORS SUCH AS JANE AUSTEN, THE BRONTË SISTERS, AND GEORGE ELIOT, THE STUDY HIGHLIGHTS THE EMERGENCE OF THE 'NEW WOMAN' IN LITERATURE--A CHARACTER THAT DEFIED THE TRADITIONAL PASSIVE FEMALE ARCHETYPE BY EXHIBITING SELF-RELIANCE AND INTELLECTUAL AGENCY. BY WEAVING LITERARY CRITICISM WITH HISTORICAL CONTEXT, THE PAPER DELINEATES THE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VICTORIAN LITERATURE AND FEMINISM'S PROGRESSIVE PUSH, ULTIMATELY REVEALING HOW THESE WRITINGS HELPED TO REFRAME WOMEN'S ROLES AND ADVANCE THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT. This is an article on the history and historiography of Cypriot communism. It is inspired by two recent volumes on Cypriot communism: the first is about the 1931 October uprising, the Communist Party of Cyprus and the Third International based on the official documents of the Communist International (by Sakellaropoulos and Choumerianos), and the second by a volume that deals with the history of Cypriot communism until the formal disbanding of the Communist party in 1944 (by Alecou and Sakellaropoulos). The paper aims to contextualise and discuss how Cypriot communists themselves engage with their own history: Cypriot Communists saw their mission as historical, i.e., the resolution of the national question was seen as integral to their strategy of achieving a socialist transformation of the world. It critically examines the difficulties of the Cypriot Left to write and appraise its own early history of Cypriot Communism, despite repeated attempts and having commissioned historians to write an official history. Communism in Cyprus emerged in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution during the late period of British colonial rule in Cyprus and was active in the 1931 uprising. The hegemonic nationalist historiography has vilified the Left and its role in the national liberation struggle, because the Communists in the 1920s and 1930s opposed union with Greece (Enosis): they saw this as a reactionary slogan that diverted attention from the urgent resolution of the class/social question and would play in the hands of colonisers dividing the toilers along ethnic/national lines in their 'divide-and-rule' games. This paper critically reviews historical debates over anticolonialism and liberation struggles in Cyprus. In nationalist historiography, the 'social question' is subordinated to the 'national question', if not totally obscured. The Left in the 1920s and 1930s however, perceived the 'national question' as an aspect of the social-political question in the struggle for socialism: the principle of self-determination of Cypriots was to be realised as part of regional struggle with the goal of a Balkan Socialist Federation. By the 1940s, the Cypriot Communist line changed: as the prospects of revolution receded, the anticolonial struggle would resolve the national question by uniting with Greece. What followed is well-known: Cyprus and its people are de facto divided. Whilst there is fascinating scholarship demonstrating the processes of the different versions of a highly contested ideological struggle about the goals, strategy, tactics and means in national liberation, the nationalist historiography has imposed a straitjacket that prevents such insights from properly making inroads in public history, school textbooks, and official historiography. This has generated a national(ist) ideological frame that has made historical debates which question the dominant narrative almost impossible within public history. Nonetheless, the terrain has now opened widely, as younger scholars in academia and in social media are questioning such assumptions and reifications pertaining to anticolonial struggles for liberation. The current dissensus and polarisation has generated new spaces and has endowed new vigour in debates on the history of the Left in the country. Such debates however are not necessarily about the past; they are primarily about the present reading the past to illuminate the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In this paper I focus my attention on the debate between three renowned Germanists of the interwar period: Elemér Moór, Elemér Schwartz and Walter Steinhauser. Their discussion of the population history of Burgenland can serve as a case study of knowledge production. This was a discourse in which the relationship between science and politics or the boundary between scholarship and dilettantism were often tested. Relying on both published material (their books and papers) and unpublished sources (correspondence, commission reports) I analyse the different standpoints of the three scholars and show the development of their rivalry. At the end of my paper, I will draw some lessons concerning the history of historical writing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PLURALISM ,HYPOCRISY ,NATIONALISM ,COLONIES ,WOMEN leaders ,HISTORIOGRAPHY - Abstract
The last quarter of the twentieth century has seen the emergence of a "cult of pluralism" (Chakrabarty) in the writing of Indian history, thus challenging the standardized narrative of the nation. The hegemonic accounts of India's struggle for independence, which have failed to acknowledge the involvement of many significant warriors, make the inextricable links between power, history, and representation quite apparent. One such exclusion is that of the tawaifs2 of Awadh.3 This hypocrisy combined with the facade of respectability has eclipsed the contribution of tawaifs, demoting them to singing and dancing girls merely. By looking at the role of Begum Hazrat Mahal in the Revolt of 1857, this paper intends to add another dimension to both the understanding of tawaifs and the historiography of the revolt. It also seeks to question the inclination of historians to focus on the participation of men and ignore women, especially those women from marginalized demographics. The study foregrounds the role of tawaifs in the changing discourses of colonialism and nationalism, with the goal to problematize their invisibility in academic discourse. Kenizé Mourad's biographical fiction, The City of Gold and Silver, is taken as a case study to focus on the production of counternarratives. A thorough examination of the various aspects of Begum's personality calls into question history's selective representations. Furthermore, by focusing on the Begum's political life, the paper seeks to correct the false image of Awadh's tawaifs and kothas4 and to restore the lost voices of the unsung heroines. New perceptions in Greek national historiography during the late nineteenth century brought forward new heritage paradigms. In the interwar, Athens' Byzantine heritage was thoroughly studied, protected by special laws, and popularized to wider audiences. After the Second World War Byzantine and ancient remains were given equal attention. The nineteenth-century neoclassical legacy came to take a place in the discussion about heritage at a time when the first apartment blocks made their appearance and it, too, would be protected by special laws. Through aspects of identification, protection, and restoration of Athens' built heritage, this paper explores the physical and discursive articulation of the city's past. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At a time when a global pandemic has disrupted lives to a large extent across the globe, doing research has become ever more complex, challenging and uncertain. Such unexpected shifts in the dynamics of research, resulting in unpredictable consequences, have prompted the author to further reflect on her positionality as a researcher writing LGBTQI history. In this paper, the author joins scholars who propose self-reflexivity as both an analytical and ethical tool in understanding volatile research contexts. In gender and sexuality studies much has been written about the importance of self-reflexivity in understanding the impact of researchers' social and epistemic locations in knowledge production. The paper argues that self-reflexive practice is especially important in studying the histories of gender and sexual identities in a multiply colonised society such as the Philippines. The author reflects on her own identity and its continuing impact on her research process. Through a decolonial lens, she uses the Filipino psychological concept of pagkatao and unpacks its multi-layered meanings as selfhood, humanness and human dignity - three crucial elements in writing the history of identities. 20. Shifting Paradigms of Multilingual Publishing and Scholarship in India.
- Author
-
Chowdhary, Reema
- Abstract
The shifting paradigms of multilingual publishing and scholarship in India refer to the evolving trends and approaches in academic publishing and scholarly activities within a multilingual and diverse linguistic context. A growing body of work in digital humanities in last decade has addressed the problems of lack of geo-linguistic diversity (Galina, 2014) and language sensitivity (Spence and Brandao, 2021) while drawing our attention towards larger geopolitical factors that inform the development of global knowledge infrastructures (Fiormonte 2012). The research paper traces the historiography and offers a comprehensive analysis of the evolving landscape of multilingual publishing and scholarship in India. As a linguistically diverse nation, India has a rich tapestry of languages, each with its unique cultural and historical significance. This diversity has significantly influenced the paradigms of publishing and scholarship in the country. The study begins by examining the linguistic diversity of India and its impact on publishing. It explores the challenges and opportunities presented by a multitude of languages and scripts, highlighting the need for inclusive and accessible publishing practices. It investigates the role of technology and internet in reshaping publishing and scholarship. It delves into the accessibility and reach of digital content in various languages, considering how these technological advancements have democratised knowledge dissemination. The study critically examines how the key facets like open access initiatives, digital publishing, community engagement, multilingual scholarship, and cultural preservation integrate the value of multilingualism into a more equitable and epistemically scholarly communication and publishing in India, hence, fostering inclusivity and promoting diverse knowledge systems. It then discusses series of case studies with special focus on Sindhi script OCR to investigate the need and importance of such mechanism in place for language inclusivity within a language heterogenous country. Introduction: An important field of research on the role of women in contemporary political history centres on participation and representativeness, as well as the analysis of involvement in public policy and decision-making. Research objectives: The paper aims to analyse the participation and representativeness of women in political history by developing three research directions focused on: (a) examining the status of women in recent historiography (1950-2019); (b) analysis of the main concepts and associated topics in contemporary scientific literature; (c) analysis of some emerging constructs associated with the "gender history" field. Research methodology: The research uses the Ngram collection technique within the Google Books platform for the period 1950-2019. The analysis also reveals the frequencies of the analysed concepts and the conceptual associations that derive from the analysis of the literature published in the period at the centre of the analysis. Results and discussions: The results of our research are relevant in the much broader context of the analysis of women's participation and representativeness, as well as for the implications for contemporary political history, two patterns of analysis being identified: (a) women's participation and social changes and b) female political representation and the role of public policies in the contemporary period. Conclusions: The research highlights the role of female participation and representativeness arguing the need for proportional access of women in public life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

2023 marks the centenary of the Treaty of Lausanne, which ended the state of war between Turkey and the western allies, in particular Greece, and reordered the Near East, settling frontiers and providing for the protection of minorities. This essay reviews the historiography of the period 1915-23 through Greek and British sources in printed books and papers, covering the Greek irredentist claim to western Asia Minor, the Paris peace conference, the occupation of Smyrna, the Greek war against Mustapha Kemal's Turkish nationalists, the collapse of the Greek army, the Lausanne treaty, and the convention on the exchange of Greek and Turkish populations agreed at Lausanne in 1923. This paper examines the concept of life in the historiographical work of Spyridon Zambelios. Through a comparative reading with Hegel, it argues that the organicist philosophical background of Zambelios' national narrative is double-edged: on the one hand, life is linked to infinity in ways that lead to a redefinition of Zambelios' central notion of national 'ὁλομέλεια'. On the other, Spirit's immersion in natural life creates complications, which, as in Hegel, place the 'transition' from one historical period to the next under the auspices of death, and, in the final analysis, yield a notion, not of infinite, but of a 'weak' life which undermines the national narrative from within. In the present introduction, I aim to provide some general context for the case studies in this special issue by introducing some recent developments in linguistics that inspired them (in particular the Haspelmath – Newmeyer debate) and by roughly sketching tendencies in the long history of linguistic description. I argue that the crosslinguistic application of linguistic categories is an old phenomenon, going back two millennia, that offers an entire array of research opportunities. This introduction also surveys the papers in the special issue, embedded in the aforementioned historical sketch, and the principal questions to which they offer some first tentative answers. I lay particular emphasis on the interplay between linguistic historiography and linguistics, advocating the view that conceptual-historical criticism should be part and parcel of the linguist's modus operandi. In this paper, I analyze Jonas of Bobbio’s hagiography as a window into the sociopolitical position of Columbanian houses, especially Bobbio, during and immediately after Columbanus’s death. Ultimately, these works manipulate and retell the past in order to speak to issues important to their author, such as monastic immunity, defining Columbanian identity, and healing wounds after the 626–27 Synod of Mâcon. I highlight the ways in which Jonas’s writings attempt to shape Columbanus’s image to benefit both his own monastery and the movement as a whole. I then contextualize this within the larger struggle to claim Columbanus’s legacy as well as the influential institutions he left behind. After first addressing the Vita Columbani, the paper moves into Jonas’s other works, the Vita Iohannis and Vita Vedastis, emphasizing the shared themes among the three. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. Effects of Buddhist Cosmological Narratives on Making a Hybrid Form of Statehood in Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

BUDDHIST cosmology ,POLITICAL leadership ,HISTORIOGRAPHY - Abstract
The rise of Buddhist nationalism in Sri Lanka and Myanmar after independence certainly caused major troubles in the post-colonial statebuilding process in both countries. From one side it hindered the efforts of the constitutional frameworks as the constitutional process became malleable to the influence of growing Buddhist nationalism. On the other hand, it continued to be the crucial factor in deciding the political leadership of both countries. This paper argues that the conflict emerged from Sri Lanka and Myanmar in its twisted identity, weighing between modern statehood and Buddhist nationalism as rooted in the historiography of both states, which was completely driven by Buddhist cosmological narratives. The paper shows the influence of Buddhist cosmology in carving a ruler who stood above the mundane polity and was not withered away even after the British colonial experience in Sri Lanka and Myanmar. The troubled constitutional practices that brought some ill effects on the minorities have risen from the effects of Buddhist cosmological notions on the public consciousness of both Sri Lanka and Myanmar. This paper focuses on the material and intellectual commodification and de-commodification of water in V.S. Naipaul's A Bend in the River (1979) and Helon Habila's Oil on Water (2011). In both novels, waterways' labour is contrasted to the role they play as repositories of erased histories. In particular, in juxtaposing these works to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1902), which appears as an intertext within both, this paper argues that the novels provide counter-narratives of water domestication. For this purpose, this article will consider the role of the intertextual relation between these two novels and Conrad's novella, before focusing on the central argument: that material and intellectual decolonisation of water and water depictions play a crucial role in illuminating imperial and colonial relations of extinction to our current ecological crises. This is critical in considering that while this emergency may seem 'recent' to some, others, notably those from formerly colonised spaces, have been at the forefront of these environmental apocalypses. Philosophers of historiography are constantly trying to answer the question about the nature of historical practice. However, various philosophical conceptions are often sought out by theoreticians of history education who require answering the very same question to utilise history's potential in achieving didactic goals. This paper seeks to explore three different philosophical conceptions of historiography and their potential for passing on crucial skills of critical thinking and media literacy. It will be shown that despite the competitive nature of vastly different philosophical schools of thought, they all can offer valuable incentives for history educators if they are willing to abandon some dogmas that have originated in the philosophy of historiography itself. Anniversaries dedicated to historical events from Romania's history were a regular phenomenon during the years Nicolae Ceaușescu was in power. This was a particularity due to the fact that the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) wanted to gain national legitimacy, which it lacked due to its seizing of power with Soviet aid. One of these celebrated events was the 375 years anniversary of the Unification of 1600, which took place in 1975. It was organized due to the fact that the Communist regime deemed Michael the Brave as the most important figure of its cult of heroes. He gained such an image because of his accomplishment of national unification. This accomplishment was in line with party policy, which promoted the "national unity myth" which stated that throughout history, the Romanians from Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania were aware that they were the same people and their struggle against foreign invaders was done in the name of national independence. Therefore, PCR stressed the importance of "honoring the memory of the ancestors" as a component of its policy. The aim of this paper is to present the historical discourse used by preeminent historians in the papers published on the occasion of the anniversary. We shall observe how some historians presented the Unification using a term that didn't toe with the party line. Their interpretations of this historical event were somewhat different from the official canon. We shall also present the event's celebration from May 20
th 1975, when a gathering took place at Alba Iulia in honor of the Unification and of the city's 2000 years anniversary. Thus, we shall see what the party's predominantly biased perspective stated. Consequently, we shall have a better picture of how it differed from the one used by historians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

This paper aims to summarize the historical and current situation of Medieval European Art History studies in Japan. I start from the dawn of European Studies in Japan at the end of the 19th century, and follow the long path taken by Medieval Art historians in Japan, through Japan's defeat in World War II and later economic growth. Finally, I briefly comment on the general situation of the Humanities and some aspects of Medieval Art History in present day Japan, when the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic are still being felt. This paper asks both whether it is possible to identify a clear shape or trajectory to human history as a whole and what significance or meaning we can attach to such a trajectory. It will argue that modern historical research within many different disciplines does indeed allow us to identify some striking shapes to the history of our species. It will also argue that those shapes are full of meaning for understanding the nature and significance of our strange species. Finally, it will end with some speculative ideas about how human history may evolve in the distant future in an attempt to see if we can perhaps glimpse what human history will look like when the human story has ended. The paper comprehensively analyzes the historiography of the formation and development of the relations between Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during 1991--2020. The authors of the article explored a set of texts devoted to the subject of Ukraine -- NATO relations and provided their historiographic analysis. The aim of the article is to identify the main trends and tendencies in the interpretation of the achievements of Ukraine-NATO cooperation. Also, this article elucidates the main aspects of the evolution of the historical discourse of Ukraine--NATO relations, characterizes their content and tendencies of progressive development, and pays special attention to the conceptual analysis of the contribution of individual scientists and institutions to the development of knowledge about Ukraine -- NATO relations. The authors offer the original approach to the periodization of the development of the historiographical process and as well as provide a detailed description of each stage. The authors rely on the scientific principles of historicism and objectivity, general scientific (analysis, synthesis, deduction, and induction) and special-historical (historical-chronological, historical-comparative, retrospective, systematic structural, historical-typological, etc.) methods. The contribution of researchers to the study of the historical preconditions for the formation of the contact between Ukraine and NATO in their political, military- technical, economic, and humanitarian aspects, as well as normative-legal and organizational-institutional principles of the cooperation, are identified and comprehensively analyzed. The authors identified the areas that require further scientific research and pointed out the prospects for further investigation on various aspects of Ukraine -- NATO relations in order to ensure the integration of our country into the North Atlantic Alliance.
