The purpose of this case report is to describe a minimally invasive technique for non-vital tooth bleaching using traditional Japanese paper, known as washi. Non-vital tooth bleaching with a mixture of sodium perborate and 30% hydrogen peroxide rolled in Japanese paper for a traumatically injured tooth, and in-office vital-tooth bleaching for the upper front six teeth and first premolars, were performed. Five-year follow-up showed satisfactory stability in the bleaching effects and did not show any problems in the traumatically injured tooth. The use of Japanese paper for non-vital tooth bleaching may minimize damage to discolored non-vital teeth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many commentators have opined as to the relative success or failure of Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro's efforts to enact reform during his first term. This article analyzes the empirical evidence using a simple framework for assessment. The principal questions it asks are: What, if anything, has he accomplished thus far, and how will history remember his legacy? Following a summary of the circumstances that led to Koizumi's ascendancy and the political and economic conditions under which he governs, the article analyzes the results achieved in the prime minister's top three priority areas: banks, government spending, and regulatory reform. Despite the incremental progress achieved by Koizumi in the face of intense political opposition--most particularly from his own party--the article concludes that his current pace of reform is not likely to result in significant reform by the end of his second term as his party's president. This paper aims to study the safe haven attribute of the Japanese yen under domestic and U.S. economic and policy uncertainty (EPU). Because of the existence of structural changes, a bootstrap rolling window subsample causality test is used to enhance the credibility of the results. The empirical results confirm that the exchange rate returns (RER) and Japanese EPU are correlated in specific periods when major economic or political events occur. In most crisis periods, the Japanese EPU has positive effects on RER, and the yen appreciates when the EPU is increasing. In addition, the RER of the yen and U.S. EPU are both negatively and positively connected. This finding confirms the hedging function of the yen in certain periods. The reason for this relationship is that Japan's low interest rates make the yen the primary funding currency in speculative carrying trade strategies, and thus, it tends to appreciate during crisis periods regardless of the origins of the EPU shocks. Therefore, the yen can be held as a safe haven currency unless the government intervenes artificially. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Facilitated by technological advances in cameras, printing methods and equipment, photojournalism blossomed throughout the world during the interwar period. It offered readers insights into the contemporary world, providing access to diverse peoples and remote locations through a combination of photographs and text. Japan was no exception. However, unlike Europe or North America, where the primary medium for disseminating knowledge through images was photo magazines or newspapers, in interwar Japan it was mass-market women's magazines that popularised the practice of using images to convey information within society. This paper specifically examines representations seen in a particular photo-article genre known as the "life pictorial", published in the best-selling women's magazine Shufu no tomo ("Housewife's Friend"). The analysis of these articles demonstrates how they contributed to the circulation of an imagined geography in 1930s Japanese society by presenting an image of a utopian multicultural Japanese empire that covertly intimated a distinct social, ethnic and racial hierarchy. Furthermore, this analysis explores how the magazine guided and shaped its readers' visual literacy by training them in how to "read" these photo articles, in a time before state censorship became fully entrenched. COLONIES ,FEMINISM ,SEX workers ,SEXUAL assault ,WAR ,COMFORT women ,COLLECTIVE memory - Abstract
During the Asia Pacifi c War (1937-1945), the Japanese Imperial Army forced women in Japanese East Asian colonies to work as so-called “comfort women” (sex workers). The justice movement for these women is an international intersectional alliance of feminists from Japanese ex-colonies in East Asia, the former colonial power Japan, and other societies, such as Australia, Germany, and the USA. This long-term feminist justice movement has campaigned for an apology and compensation from the Japanese government, as well as for recognition of “comfort women‘s” suff ering and of sexual violence in war in cultural memory. Through researching this justice movement from a processual intersectionality perspective, this paper shows that it gained power and legitimacy from refl ecting and working on its internal intersectional inequalities. This included refl ecting on the class hierarchies between many former “comfort women”, who had power of defi nition, and intellectual feminist activists, as well as on the postcolonial divide between former Japanese colonies and the former colonial power Japan, leading it to develop horizontal cooperation and practices. Following an overview, the paper outlines the movements in South Korea, Japan, and Germany, and highlights the different postcolonial constellation between East Asia and Germany, the main actors, and their aims. While the Japanese government rejected the justice movement‘s demands and the right wing mobilised against it, has been able to infl uence cultural memory to widely recognize sexual violence in war and the dignity of the “comfort women”. The main objective of this paper is to critically evaluate as many of Ramseyer's arguments as possible included in his 2022 paper. It consists of three sections in addition to the introduction and concluding remarks. The first section summarizes the expanded literature that interpreted the "comfort women" system as sexual slavery, judgments, and recommendations to the Japanese government given by scholars, international human rights organizations and the legislative branches of four Western countries. Since Ramseyer published his article denying the "comfort women" system as sexual slavery without introducing this literature, we cannot consider his article as an academic work. The second section critically evaluates Ramseyer's unacceptable and untenable arguments that Japanese and Korean "comfort women" were commercial sex workers with labor contracts rather than sexual slaves. The third section critically evaluates Ramseyer's severe criticisms of the Korean council and its redress activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Devising an appropriate dental treatment plan for patients with pre-existing medical conditions is a demanding task. Dentists must consider the sometimes life threatening, interactions between ongoing medical conditions and dental treatment. Stakes are particularly high for the elderly on prescription drugs and other therapies for medical conditions while they seek dental care for advanced oral diseases. Given that Japan is an ageing society, it is crucial to create avenues for medical and dental practitioners to share patient information and collaborate.to,improve care This paper examined trends from demographic data to suggest that there is an impending further rise in the number of medically compromised elderly seeking dental treatment. For patient safety and improved public health, it is important that dental practitioners evaluate the nature and ongoing treatment of pre-existing medical conditions amongst new patients and account for their impact on dedicated and dental status. This paper supports the relevance of comprehensive clinical practice guidelines and the need to train dental practitioners to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to dental care. In order to meet the future needs of an ageing population, the Japanese Society of Dentistry for Medically Compromised Patients needs to take initiative and suggest mechanisms to exchange patient information freely and encourage multidisciplinary dental practices. For policymakers who intend to make decisions on the policy to stimulate economic growth and enhance job opportunities, business demography statistics serve as important data sources for promoting entrepreneurship, which is a key for the policy. Business demography, which usually consists of annual demographic information such as the number of births, deaths, and survivals of businesses, can be produced from a business register in many countries. In Japan, however, it is difficult to produce business demography directly from the Japanese business resister called Establishment Frame Database because the major data source for the database is the Economic Census, conducted twice every five years. Alternatively, business demography can be estimated using the data of the Economic Census. However, it has been pointed out that short-lived births of businesses are hardly grasped by the estimation using the data of statistical surveys such as the Economic Census at intervals of more than one year. This paper introduces a stochastic model to cope with the above issue and proposes a calculation formula to estimate the number of short-lived births of businesses as well as other demographic indicators of business demography. Then the paper is followed by a numerical example, which proves to overcome the shortcomings of previous methodologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Japan is one of the world's leading super-aging societies, with the highest average life expectancy in the world. 30.3% of the population will be 65 years old or older by 2025, and 13.0% will be 75 years old or older. In addition, the number of heart failure patients is increasing yearly. The number of heart failure patients is increasing by about 10,000 each year and is estimated to reach 1.2 million by 2020 and 1.3 million by 2030. The reason for the rapid increase in the number of heart failure patients in Japan is the aging of the population. Therefore, machine learning to predict atrial fibrillation is employed in this paper. We conducted a trial using risk assessment of cerebral infarction and other factors. As a result of the analysis, we extracted highly influential evaluation indices for each characteristic of atrial fibrillation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENGLISH language education ,COVID-19 pandemic - Abstract
English has a unique perception in Japan. While it is considered as one of the important tools to gain knowledge and success, Japanese society also has its own sentiment and seen it as a language of the elites. This perception heavily influenced the curriculum, teaching methods, and students' motivation in mastering the language. English proficiency in Japan itself, however, is still considered very low. Many argued that the curriculum and the outdated teaching style are the ones to blame. Japanese government have been trying several initiatives to improve its English education quality. In the past few years, nonformal English educations institution and native English teachers has also been increasing in demand, mainly thanks to Tokyo Olympic 2020. The spread of COVID-19, however, brought a lot of new challenges and left the future of English education in jeopardy. This paper is intended to give an overview of how English is perceived by Japanese society, how it is learnt in each educational level, and later how COVID-19 affected the system. University campuses are known to be a driving force of knowledge. Moreover, due to campuses' impact on their surroundings, they are also considered as a driving force of physical, social, cultural, and economic change. Therefore, this paper conducts a statistical multi-variate analysis to uncover campus-neighbourhood interaction and the following socio-economic outcomes. Thirteen different variables related to 43 university campuses in Japan and their neighbourhoods' attributes have been collected and measured. Principal component analysis and multi-linear regression analysis have been applied to uncover associations between selected variables. Additionally, k-means cluster analysis has been applied to discover hidden spatial trends between selected cases studies. Findings have shown that campuses located in highly urbanised accessible neighbourhoods create numerous benefits for students such as maximising students' residential preferences and modes of transportation. The main outcome of this paper lies in providing the grounds for a holistic framework towards a better decision making for campus development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is no nationwide necropsy database of animals in Japan, and most of the records are available from the postwar period. To clarify the chronological transition of animal necropsy cases in Tokyo, Japan, the records accumulated in The University of Tokyo from 1902 were investigated. Of necropsy records on paper or electronic from 1902 to 2021 kept at the Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology, The University of Tokyo, totally 3,137 cases including 572 in 1903-1914 (the Meiji-Taisho period), 1,258 in 1956-1969 (the Showa period) and 1,307 in 2006-2020 (the Heisei-Reiwa period), respectively, were examined for species, breed, age and pathological diagnosis. Dogs (44.6%) and horses (34.8%) in the Meiji-Taisho period, dogs (62.9%) and cats (17.3%) in the Showa period, and dogs (46.0%), cats (26.1%) and exotic animals (20.5%) in the Heisei-Reiwa period were the most necropsied animal species. With the passage of time, the number of animal species increased, and the breeds of dogs and cats came to be more various. The median ages of death were 2 years, 3 years and 10 years old in dogs in the Meiji-Taisho, Showa and Heisei-Reiwa periods, respectively, and 2 years and 10 years old in cats in the Showa and Heisei-Reiwa periods, respectively. Viral, bacterial and parasitic infections were decreased, and inversely tumor cases increased due to the prolonged lifespan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Japan is in the Pacific Rim Seismic Belt, and earthquakes happen frequently. Foreigners who lack the necessary earthquake knowledge and escape skills may not survive strong earthquakes in Japan. Therefore, it is essential to provide earthquake education to these foreigners. Since rich-formed earthquake education has been available for foreigners living in Japan, this research works to improve the earthquake education situation for foreigners who intend to visit Japan. Receiving earthquake education in advance helps enhance foreigners' earthquake risk awareness, gain more opportunities to master earthquake survival knowledge, and build earthquake survival confidence. This paper proposed a learning model called 'FOE+G' to achieve the research goals. 'FOE' means the frequency of occurrence of earthquakes in Japan, and 'G' means gamification. A prototype system in the form of a cross-platform application has been developed to confirm that the learning model improves earthquake education for the target audience. The application delivers an earthquake notification to target objects each time an eligible earthquake occurs in Japan. The High-frequency earthquakes in Japan lead to relatively frequent updates, which enable users to build earthquake awareness, realise the importance of earthquake education, and participate more actively in it. Furthermore, gamification is employed in the application to prompt participation in earthquake education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing number of dementia patients is one of the major social problems in Japan. Early detection and prevention of dementia is important. Many welfare facilities use check tests to measure the progression of dementia. However, some elderly people can be very nervous about assessment tests. In addition, the evaluation tests should be conducted regularly to assess the cognitive function of the patient over time, which can be a huge burden for medical and care providers. On the other hand, research papers have recently reported that it is possible to measure cognitive functions by focusing on brain functions and eye movements. In this paper, the authors aimed to develop a new dementia evaluation system to reduce the burden on medical staff and elderly persons. As the first step of this project, we focused on eye movement and employed a simple puzzle game to collect a patient's eye movement. Because of COVID-19, we could not conduct experiments at care houses; instead, we conducted a preliminary experiment with healthy subjects and collected eye movement data during the puzzle game. The Japanese Health, Labour, and Welfare Ministry in 2020 identified the following issues for training and recruitment of dental technicians: early involvement of students in dental practice and dental laboratory work, a curriculum in line with the times, and an extension of the years of training. This paper investigates the education and qualifications of dental technicians in other countries to discuss these issues. The survey method was to use the database PubMed to search the literature since 2001 using the keywords "dental technician," "education," and license" to collect literature related to the pre-graduate education of dental technicians. Information on educational institutions was also included in the survey. The results showed that the countries that introduced joint education between dental technicians and dentists into their educational programs, and the examinations and years of training required for each certification varied from country to country. The curriculum for dental technicians in Japan changed from a time-based to a credit-based system on April 1, 2018. The credit system is characterized by the possibility of each training institution actively engaging in flexible curriculum organization. Dental technician education programs in other countries can provide a valuable reference for each training institute to demonstrate its uniqueness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the automatic analysis of natural environment images acquired with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has rapidly gained popularity. UAVs are specially important in mountainous forests where access is difficult and large areas need to be surveyed. In Zao mountains in northeastern Japan, regenerated fir saplings are competing with sub-alpine vegetation shrubs after a severe fir tree mortality caused by bark beetle infestation. A detailed survey of vegetation distribution is key to improve our understanding of species succession and the influence of climate change in that process. To that end, we evaluated the suitability of deep-learning-based automatic image classification of UAV images in order to map sub-alpine vegetation succession in large areas and the potential of fir regeneration. In order to assess the contribution of this technology in this research field, we first conducted an observer study to assess the difficulty for humans of the task of classifying vegetation from images. Afterwards, we compared the observers' accuracy to four state-of-the art deep learning networks for automatic image classification. The best observer accuracy of 55% demonstrates the limitations of species classification using only images. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the sources of error showed that even though humans could differentiate between deciduous and evergreen species with an accuracy of 96%, identifying the correct species within each group proved much more challenging. In contrast, deep learning networks achieved accuracy values in the range of 70–80% for species classification, clearly demonstrating capabilities beyond human experts. Our experiments also indicated that the performance of these networks was significantly influenced by the similarity between the datasets used to fine-tune them and evaluate them. This fact highlights the importance of building publicly available images databases to further improve the results. Nevertheless, the results presented in this paper show that the analysis of UAV-acquired with deep learning networks can usher in a new type of large-scale study, spanning tenths or even hundreds of hectares with high spatial resolution (of a few cms per pixel), providing the ability to assess challenging vegetation dynamics problems that go beyond the ability of conventional fieldwork methodologies. • UAV Shrub image classification. • Deep Learning vs human expert comparison. • Focus on Practical use. We calculate the steady-states of the system and discuss their stability. We also discuss the existence and uniqueness of a non-negative solution for the system under study. Additionally, we obtain an approximate response by implementing the fractional Euler method. Next, we investigate the first and the second waves of the disease in Iran and Japan; then we give a prediction concerning the second wave of the disease. We display the numerical simulations for different derivative orders in order to evaluate the efficacy of the fractional concept on the system behaviors. We also calculate the optimal control of the system and display its numerical simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reaching a reading goal of150,000 words in a semester is no easy featfor many language learners. To reach this goal, an extensive reading (ER) program needs to invest in and select a format that can best enable this achievement. This preliminary study compares the use of two different extensive reading (ER) formats that employ two learning management systems to determine which format has a greater impact on the number of words read and how they influence learner and teacher attitudes towards ER. Printed graded readers (PGRs) using MReader and digital graded readers (DGRs) using Xreading were used in an advanced required TOEFL course for first-year students at a large, private university in Japan in the spring semesters of 2019 and 2020, respectively. This paper examines student achievements (N=95) with MReader and Xreading reading logs (number of words read) and attitudes towards ER as revealed in the student survey responses and teacher (N=3) qualitative feedback. The preliminary findings suggest that PGRs may produce higher outcomes in terms of words read. In general, both PGRs and DGRs were received favorably by students and teachers, suggesting that institutions can successfully utilize either system based upon their existing infrastructure needs. In this paper we propose necessary conditions for antifragile project management, based on the Deming paradigm (a much richer version of statistical process control), named after W.E.Deming, who revolutionized the industry in Japan. We analyze in detail the concept of antifragility and extend it from probability theory to epistemology by proposing mechanisms that make a system antifragile, with application to knowledge as a complex system. These mechanisms are related with the internal dynamics of the system such as recursiveness, rather than the response to external stimuli. We built upon a previous work in which we propose quality of product or service as a payoff instead of short-term revenue. An antifragile project management strategy therefore means convexity of quality as a function of random events, uncertainty and lack of information, with quality itself being the random variable towards which the probability density distribution is locally convex. We propose Deming paradigms of management as necessary conditions in achieving antifragility of project management. They are related to the ability to extract the maximum of information from the smallest of errors – i) understanding variation ii) having a theory, iii) managing teams as complex systems. This paper focuses on the order acceptance and scheduling problem with worker–operation assignment considering the precedence constraint in the divisional seru production system, which is a new production type derived from Japan and can achieve responsiveness, flexibility, and efficiency simultaneously. With limited production capacity and workers with different skill sets and skill levels, the problem considered in this paper includes three sub-problems: (i) assigning workers to each seru , (ii) making the order acceptance and scheduling plan, and (iii) allocating workers to operations for each order. Subsequently, a nonlinear integer programming model is established for improving the total net revenue, and a bi-level nested heuristic algorithm is designed due to its intractable computation. Computational experiments are made finally, and results show that the objective value obtained by the bi-level nested heuristic algorithm is 3% better than the bi-level genetic algorithm, and the running time is shortened by 99.23%. That is, the proposed bi-level nested heuristic algorithm can achieve better results and higher efficiency for divisional seru order acceptance and scheduling problems. • A new production system, seru , is introduced and the divisional seru order acceptance and scheduling problem is studied. • The integer programming model for the studied problem is presented, and a bi-level nested heuristic algorithm is designed. • The experimental results indicate that the proposed solution methodology is effective and robust. In the era of technology, learning can be supported with mobile devices inside and outside of the classroom. In the hope of taking advantage of technology advances, teachers worldwide have integrated technologies into teaching to effectively deliver lesson content and address students' needs. However, few non-native learners are exposed to mobile devices to optimize selfstudying English outside the classroom. Thus, the present paper conducts a case study to look into mobile devices' applications to enhance self-studying English as a foreign language. The study participants included 26 Japanese and Vietnamese learners divided into two groups over 15 weeks. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyze and compare the results with R-Studio statistics software. The present study sought to encourage collaboration and foster the autonomy of learners with mobile devices' assistance as supporting language selflearning tools. The findings of the present research will be discussed in terms of the efficiency and potentials of mobile devices as supportive tools outside of classroom activities among Vietnamese and Japanese students as non-native learners of English. This paper details the efforts made by Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), under their Japan-India collaborative projects, to promote low carbon technologies (LCT) among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in India. The empirical evidence gathered during the projects show that three key barriers hinder faster adoption of Japanese LCT among the Indian SMEs: (i) information and knowledge gaps; (ii) networking and communication challenges; (iii) higher cost of the LCT. To bring stakeholders from the two countries together, a multi-stakeholder platform called Japan-India Technology Matchmaking Platform (JITMAP) was developed. The paper outlines how JITMAP, through its online information sharing and on the ground activities, is addressing some of the barriers by promoting awareness enhancement, arrangement of business meetings, study on LCT application (feasibility studies), access to financial schemes, and arrangement of policy and regulatory discussions. There is ample scope to scale-up the JITMAP activities and replicate it as a model for LCT cooperation between other developed and developing countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From 1614 to 1873 Christianity was outlawed in Japan. The Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for most of this period, built rigorous and complicated systems of surveillance in order to monitor their population's religious habits. This paper seeks to describe the evolution of Edo period (1603-1868) anti-Christian religious surveillance. The first two sections of the paper explore the development of surveillance under the first three Tokugawa leaders. The following sections focus on the evolution of these systems (the recruitment of informants, temple registration, the composition of registries, and tests of faith) in subsequent periods and includes some short passages from previously untranslated contemporaneous documents. Finally, the paper offers some thoughts on the efficacy of anti-Christian surveillance, arguing that the toleration of the existence of hidden communities resulted from changes in Christian behaviour that made them harder to discover and a willingness on the part of the authorities to tolerate illegal activity due to economic disincentive and a reduction in the threat that Christianity posed. Microplastics (MPs) are non-biodegradable substances that can sustain our environment for up to a century. What is more worrying is the incapability of modern technologies to annihilate MPs from om environment. One ramification of MPs is their impact on every kind of life form on this planet, which has been discussed ahead; that is why these substances are surfacing in everyday discussions of scholars and researchers. This paper discusses the overview of the global occurrence, abundance, analysis, and remediation techniques of MPs in the environment. This paper primarily reviews the event and abundance of MPs in coastal sediments and agricultural soil of three major Asian countries, India, China, and Japan. A significant concentration of MPs has been recorded from these countries, which affirms its strong presence and subsequent environmental impacts. Concentrations such as 73,100 MPs/kg in Indian coastal sediments and 42,960 particles/kg in the agricultural soil of China is a solid testimony to prove their massive outbreak in our environment and require urgent attention towards this issue. Conclusions show that human activities, rivers, and plastic mulching on agricultural fields have majorly acted as carriers of MPs towards coastal and terrestrial soil and sediments. Later, based on recorded concentrations and gaps, future research studies are recommended in the concerned domain; a dearth of studies on MPs influencing Indian agricultural soil make a whole sector and its consumer vulnerable to the adverse effects of this emerging contaminant. [Display omitted] • Film & fibre shaped microplastics (MPs) are more abundant in India, China and Japan. • Plastic mulching is the root cause of major MPs pollution in soil and sediment. • Estuarian soil/sediment are more prone to MPs pollution than terrestrial and coastal. • FT-IR is highly used for MPs identification; mass spectrometry & microscopy are least. • MPs work as a vector for metals, PPCPs, surfactants and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The primary role of a teacher from a technical high school in Japan is to teach the students the specialized knowledge and skills for the target industry such as manufacturing. At the same time, it is nothing to say to enhance the humanity of the students. The society of teachers is aging same as the aging and the birth rate decline society as the whole environment of Japan. From those backgrounds, teachers in the technical high school with educational capability who can teach students appropriately are required. One of the methods to improve the educational capability of teachers more than ever, we propose a method to quantify the educational capability in this paper. The educational capability of each teacher can be confirmed objectively at the same time by our proposed method. From the result of analyses, the educational capability of teachers is obtained from the results of the questionnaire. Based on our proposed method, the optimal composition of teachers by each subject is generated. This is research in progress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, many elderly people choose to live in nursing homes with the high-speed advancement of the aging society in Japan. In the aging society, the shortage of nurses in nursing homes is growing and the demand for medical staff is also increasing. Recording the daily distribution of medicines for the elderly in a nursing home is difficult, which is a time-consuming and labor-consuming task. With the development of artificial intelligence, researchers have tried to realize the automatic recognition of characters using deep learning and achieved exciting performance. This paper aims to realize the automatic medicine package character recognition by combining image processing and deep learning, which may help distribute medicines in nursing home. To be specific, we first detect character area on the image of medicine package, then use dilation and erosion to extract characters. Finally, we design a slight seven-layer deep learning model for character recognition. The experimental results show the deep learning based character recognition accuracy achieved at 97.16%. Furthermore, the tablets are also recognized correctly, which may help staff check the medicine information in the package. Insert here your abstract text. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents investigating the fraud transaction detection in the mail order industry. These kinds of detection made intensively but the outcome of the research was not shared among the industry. As the B2C industry expands their market size, the fraud transactions increase in number. As a matter of course, this phenomenon is not only continuing but cleverly. One of the conclusive factors for this phenomenon is payment method. That is, the deferred payment method is primarily employed in Japan. The conventional primary indicator for the fraud detection is the ordered time-based information. They are the shipping address, the recipient name, and the payment method. Since conventional detecting method for the fraud depends on some heuristic knowledge, their market size enlargement makes hard to detect fraud transaction. For this background, this paper is presented investigating for comparing algorithms with the actual transaction data gathered from the mail-order industry in Japan. The comparison of weaker learner algorithms is made. The analytical results suggest Random forest is more accurate than XGBoost not only AUC score but parameter tuning costs. This result will make it use for the decision support knowledge for screening customer at the order received phase in the mail order industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the decades of work undertaken by the international legal community to attain full and satisfactory reparation for the consequences of Japan's actions during World War II, the emotionally-charged bilateral dispute between Japan and South Korea over the issue of the so-called 'comfort women' continues to this day. This paper is focused on analysis of the discourses surrounding the issue through the lens of a psychoanalytic methodological framework. Based upon the therapeutic work of one of the world's leading sexual trauma specialists Judith Herman and her text Trauma and Recovery (1992), the paper examines the issues at stake in the comfort women issue through the themes inherent to Herman's three stages of recovery for survivors of violent trauma. The research concludes that, while there are limitations in applying psychoanalytic methodologies to diplomatic disputes, there is value in pursuing and campaigning for holistic and therapeutic approaches to historical trauma in the context of feminist legal activisms. The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in free-ranging cats on Tokunoshima Island was assessed by testing 125 serum samples using anti-T. gondii IgG indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The overall seropositivity rate was 47.2% (59/125). Seropositivity rates in cats with body weight >2.0 kg (57.4%) were significantly higher than in those with body weight =2.0 kg (12.5%, P<0.01). Analysis of the number of seropositive cats by settlement revealed the presence of possibly-infected cats in 17 of 23 settlements, indicating the widespread prevalence of T. gondii on the island. This is the first study to show the seroprevalence of T. gondii in free-ranging cats on Tokunoshima Island. The information revealed in this paper will help to prevent the transmission of T. gondii among cats and also in both wild and domestic animals and humans on the island. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Japanese government, in response to the many social, economic and environmental problems they face, have embraced and are developing, in collaboration with universities and transnational corporations, a concept they call Society 5.0. This is a plan to integrate new technologies such as Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence and robotics. The Internet of Things will gather data which will be processed by AI which will provide for and even anticipate each individual’s needs with minimal waste. This idea is not just Japan’s but is being replicated in many developed nations and is seen as our inevitable future path. In this paper, however, I argue that this is a plan to create a totalitarian Brave New World, as Aldous Huxley imagined it. A world in which humans are enslaved to the machines that provide for their every desire and lose their ability to develop cognitively and ethically. This will be a world full of comfortable idiots living in an illusion of certainty. I will provide a range of criticisms of Society 5.0 but more than that, I will propose an alternative being developed by the global process philosophy community; Ecological Civilization. While Society 5.0 seeks its solutions through further abstracting humanity from the natural world it is destroying, locking us in a deterministic bubble, Ecological Civilization seeks to re-embed us in nature, repair our dysfunctional relationships with it and promote freedom through transcendence to higher levels of development. BACKGROUND Understanding the trend toward later and less marriage is particularly important in lowfertility societies where alternatives to marriage are limited and childbearing outside of marriage remains rare. OBJECTIVE Our goal in this paper is to advance our understanding of the wide variety of explanations offered for later and less marriage in Japan by focusing explicitly on marriage intentions and desires. METHODS Using two sources of nationally representative data, we describe the prevalence of positive, negative, and passive marriage intentions and desires among men and women who have never been married. We also examine socioeconomic differences in intentions, patterns of marriage desires across young adulthood, and relationships between marriage desires and outcomes. By linking three pathways to later and less marriage (rejection of marriage, failure to realize marriage desires, and unplanned drifting into singlehood) to specific theoretical frameworks, we generate indirect insights into explanations for later and less marriage. CONCLUSIONS Although the large majority of unmarried men and women want to marry, less than half of respondents married across nine waves of the Japanese Life Course Panel Survey. Among those who remained unmarried, roughly two-thirds can be classified as 'drifting' into singlehood, about 30% as 'failing to realize marriage desires,' and no more than 5% as 'rejecting marriage'. Lifestyle disease is a general term from habits related to personal activities such as stress, overeating, and lack of exercise. Typical examples are hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. In Japan, lifestyle diseases account for about 30% of annual medical expenses and about 60% of annual deaths. Therefore, it is necessary to reflect lifestyle habits in order to prevent lifestyle diseases accurately. Diabetes mellitus has no symptom in hyperglycemia itself, and symptoms appear only after the vascular disorder that progresses as hyperglycemia persists. In the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the total number of persons who are strongly suspected of having diabetes and persons who cannot deny the possibility of diabetes is estimated to be 20 million. Since the health condition of individuals is regularly examined at each stage in Japan, this paper employs the results of the regular check-up for predicting future lifestyle diseases by machine learning. From the results of analytics, the characteristics of the potential person were extracted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasing the number of dementia patients is one of the big social problems in Japan. Early detection and prevention of dementia are essential. Medical specialists and care workers usually use some dementia evaluation methods. However, some elderly persons often become very nervous about the evaluation tests. Also, these evaluation tests should be conducted continually to assess a patient's cognitive function. On the other hand, recently, research papers on the relationship between simple human actions and a patient's cognitive function have been reported. The authors focused on hand dexterity and movement of both hands because these factors have some relationships to cognitive functions. We developed a new recreational system to evaluate hand dexterity and activity of both hands to assess a subject's cognitive functions. Also, the authors discussed the relationship between the extracted features and a subject's cognitive functions. As a result of experiments, we determined the feature descriptor(s) about hand motion to estimate and evaluate a patient's cognitive function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organizations may change their strategies in order to respond to changes in the environment or to change management policies due to a change in management. In order to effectively implement the strategy, the unconscious perception of the organizational members who are the bearers of the strategy must also change, but how should the leaders (often managers) who lead the organizational transformation recognize that the unconscious perception of the organizational members is changing? In this paper, authors introduce a method developed by themselves to visualize the unconscious perception of organizational members. Authors then compare the unconscious perception of employees before and after the change of management in a small and medium-sized company in Japan and visualize the changes. Authors also consider the relationship between these changes and the changes in strategy in the SME with the president changes. As a result, authors speculate that the method developed by the authors may have been successful in describing the change in employees' unconscious perception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
