Digital games are one of the most engaging forms of media. Players can have a first-hand experience and the possibility of feeling immersed within a digital setting where agency is exerted. This paper seeks to understand the role of digital games as new means of communication and their potential to convey messages that may defy gamers to question the moral grand narratives that shape contemporary societies. In a moment when many countries have opted to close or limit the circulation in their borders, it is important to think about the role played by the border as a historic liminal entity for the representation of societies and communities, distinguishing those who belong from those who do not. The representation of the border in digital games have tended to follow one of the main tropes explored in other media: the border as a physical space that set boundaries between different nations and different regions of the world. In order to assert the potential of digital games to offer a more comprehensive representation of the border as a liminal space, the case of Papers, Please! (2013) will be analyzed. Based on a qualitative methodology, having content analysis as primary data collection method, the paper intends to contribute to the discussion on how history may narrativized and, eventually, reinterpreted in digital games. Papers, Please! analysis will be centered on the relationship that is set between player and border, that is presented as a liminal space where the game's action takes places entirely. Moreover, the paper intends to discuss the role that has been played by digital games in the representation of serious topics and how they have evolved as communication tools beyond their role as entertainment products. Topics discussed include the comparison of pain outcomes between the two approaches, the evaluation of patient adherence and engagement with digital interventions, and the overall impact of digital tools on post-surgical rehabilitation.

This is a conceptual article that aims to propose the concept of sensory and emotional smart cultural tourism, whose main idea is to promote the use of digital technologies in an approach that makes them transparent in the tourist experience and that this experience is focused on the sensory and emotional experience, capable of triggering memorable sensory states, that is, unforgettable experiences. The proposal of sensory and emotional smart cultural tourism was conceived through an analytical-reflective literature review and proposes that the empirical approaches to be implemented from the concept take into account the co-design approach. Keeping a record of attendance is a practice as old as the world and still as useful as ever, but being an old practice doesn't imply keeping to old methods, as much as every other aspect of modern human life, attendance registers are long overdue going through a digitization process. Creating a single-purpose digital attendance register for a specific field may seem ideal, it can be done relatively quickly, requiring at most a month of development time but other requirements such as multi-platform availability could increase either the development time or deployment costs of the solution and it could also become obsolete and require a complete re-writing in a year or two if any major changes to the structure of the organization happen. This paper proposes a digital solution for attendance register, which can easily and quickly be modified to accommodate any changes or even switching to a completely different field or type of organization, the minimum development time of such a project would begin at three months for full functionality with security adding another month or two however when done it would run on all major platforms and could be modified in as low as a single day to offer as a ready-made solution to a different organization and could also easily integrate hardware-based attendance tracking mechanisms. In recent years, with the advent of digital imaging technology, e.g., color printers and color scanners, it has become easier for counterfeiters to produce fake banknotes. The spread of counterfeit money causes loss to everyone involved in financial transactions. Therefore, an effective and reliable verification technique is necessary for successful and reliable financial transactions. This paper presents a cognitive computationbased technique for paper currency verification. In this regard, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses of counterfeit and genuine banknotes were performed. This experimentation confirmed that the materials used in preparation of genuine and counterfeit banknotes were totally different from each other. Based on these findings, a set of discriminative and robust features was proposed to re ect these differences in currency images. The proposed features represented characteristics of the materials of the banknote, such as printing ink, chemical composition, and surface coarseness. With these robust features, Support Vector Machines (SVMs) were employed for classification. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique, experimentations were performed on a self-constructed dataset of Pakistani banknotes, comprised of 195 currency images, including 35 counterfeit banknotes. In this article, we scrutinize the digital imperative of the practices and ideals of digital everyday life of Finnish youth born in 2005-2006 by dismantling the promises of digital youth. Our paper focuses on digital belonging and engagements in young people's everyday lives. We ask what these engagements tell us about the ideals of digital citizenship and agency of young people and how these ideals shape the understandings of the use of digital environments. To achieve these objectives, we draw on both qualitative and quantitative research material to analyze their interpretations of the use of digital technologies and their meanings. Our research reveals that it is important to elaborate on how digitalization is accessed, understood, and used. The timetable for placing a dental implant can be crucial in the reduction of resorption of the socket after an extraction. The association of immediate implantation with an implant that copies the anatomy of the extracted root seems to add benefits in limiting the hard and soft tissue changes that may occur. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the historical development of all types of root analogue implants from their beginning to the present day. To our knowledge the first individualised ones were described in 1969. Later, the use of titanium instead of the polymers that were used to start with offered better bony integration, and showed that the selection of materials was a key factor in their success. Root analogue implants made from zirconia were also described when attempts were being made to improve aesthetics in the anterior regions. The more recent introduction of digital technology such as DICOM has allowed the fabrication of these implants in less time, and the combination with digital diagnostic options such as cone-beam computed tomography facilitated the fabrication of some types of implants before extraction that could be inserted immediately into the alveolar socket with optimal and safe 3-dimensional positioning. Currently digital planning allows the clinician to design the ideal implant and abutment, which reduces the need for tissue grafting in the surgical phase and gingival conditioning in the prosthetic phase. This discussion paper highlights the importance of Australian nursing and midwifery students' lack of exposure to electronic medical records during their undergraduate programs. There is pressure on universities offering nursing and midwifery programs to provide students with opportunities to learn to use patient electronic medical records. This will provide authentic rehearsal with the digital technology prior to clinical placements and increase graduate work readiness. Informed by contemporary literature, we describe the benefits of implementing electronic medical records (eMR) in health organisations and identify the challenges and barriers to implementing and integrating the education of electronic records into undergraduate nursing and midwifery programs. Undergraduate students who had not experienced eMR as part of on-campus learning felt unprepared and lacked confidence when commencing clinical practice. Some international nursing and midwifery programs have found that student's skills improve in decision-making and documenting patient observations when eMR is integrated into their university education program. Successful integration of an eMR program should consider academic/teaching staff skills and confidence in technology use, initial and ongoing costs and technical support required to deliver the program. In conclusion, Australian universities need to embed eMR learning experiences into the nursing and midwifery undergraduate curricula to increase students work-readiness with a focus on patient safety. Xenophanes is a figurine made of a waxy mixture and grey plasticine, created by Yannis Pappas at the end of the twentieth century. During its short period of existence, the figurine presented severe plastic deformation, structural, and stability issues, with detached or missing elements. The artwork's earlier preserved states are documented by an archival photograph of 1994 and two casts dated to 2005. The physical treatment of its deformation is an irreversible intervention that may put the artwork in additional danger. The conservation of complex contemporary artworks comprises a challenging field of work, as the coexistence and aging of different and often pliable materials lead to multiple deformations. Their conservation treatments could be kept to a minimum for the preservation and understanding of the artworks, with the support of three-dimensional (3D) documentation and digital restoration. A digital restoration that simulates the physical treatment of an artwork aims to provide information that could assist with decisions made for its physical care by minimizing the risks. This paper examines the digital restoration of the small figurine Xenophanes following the steps of increased intervention of a probable physical treatment and how each step of this process may affect its stability. 3D documentation of the current condition of the artwork and its two casts was made utilizing optical laser scanning and structure from motion photogrammetry. The resulting 3D models facilitated the digital restoration of the artwork to its earlier states. The comparison and analysis of the 3D models and the digital restoration process provided information that could assist its physical treatment. The digital restoration of the complex plastic deformation of an artwork is a case that, to our knowledge, has not been addressed so far. The complexity of the progress, the ethical dilemmas that arise during the artwork's restoration, and the reflection on the restoration of a cultural artifact only in the digital environment encourage the rethinking of conservation. Security token offerings (STOs), based on blockchain technology, are attracting increasing attention as an innovative alternative means of venture financing. Information about specific STOs is generally provided in white papers. This study analyses the content of white papers using a unique sample of 188 STOs from 2017 to 2021 to identify which topic is related to campaign success. We leverage latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modelling to identify the topics and themes in white papers. Nine topics are identified through LDA: company description, distributed ledger technology components, energy and green issues, financial and legal issues, artificial intelligence, and tech applications in different industries—specifically, healthcare, manufacturing and construction, education, and financial services. We find that energy and green issues represent one of the most prominent topics among all types of projects and that their disclosure is positively related to the probability of campaign success and the amount of funding raised. Another prominent topic that affects campaign outcomes is technology in the healthcare industry, reflecting wider investment trends in this sector. Our results may help entrepreneurs to improve their campaign disclosures and present new issues for policymakers regarding investments in digital tokens. • An integrated framework of STOs success is proposed by combining topic modelling with other campaigns' indicators. • Company's energy consumption and green impact is one of the most dealt topics among all types of projects. • The technological components in the healthcare field is a topic related to the campaign success • Energy consumption and green issues must be adequately disclosed to affect campaign success. Abstract: The aim of this article is to investigate the impact of digital technologies on writing and reading within an educational rather than business environment. It explores the affordances of writing and reading on paper and those of writing on a keyboard and reading on a screen. The analysis is based on an exploratory study carried out with a class of Masters Students in Multimedia Communication and Technologies of Information at the University of Udine (Italy) who were asked to write an essay on this topic. The methodology applied in this study is qualitative content analysis of the essays produced by the students. The principal results of this study show that reading and writing competencies are changing with the use of digital technologies but that paper and digital interactions are not mutually exclusive. Students are more productive textually with writing than with reading, however, they still see the virtues of writing on paper which they continue to use extensively. It appears that chirographic writing and paper is more multi-sensorial and meta-communicative than using the keyboard or screen. Further research is recommended to explore this complementarities of writing on paper and on screen/keyboard as well as the perceived changes in preferred sources of reading material. A systematic review of 34 articles published within the last 20 years, that explored the implications of increased use of computer-based summative assessments revealed six key themes. Specifically: shifts in assessment design; impact on teachers; variation in computer familiarity; student experience; logistics and infrastructure; and hardware and software issues. Findings relating to comparability of results between the assessment modes are also discussed. This review evaluates the computer-based assessment (CBA) literature to identify the advantages and challenges for introducing CBA within educational institutions. The findings of this review will be of particular interest to those affected by a steady trend towards the introduction of CBA affecting both teachers and students. This paper is the second installment in a two-part series on the physicality of archival material in the context of the digital age. The first part reviewed key lessons in the history of new technologies that have affected archival practice. Part two will explore a holistic understanding of paper-based knowledge transmission in the context of the digital access movement. The intent is to provide a more expansive context to the shift from a physically, place-based activity to one of ubiquitous access to secondary materials. The investigation emphasizes two notions: archives as thing and archives as experience. Issues of authenticity, evidence, and sensory engagement are seen as potential knowledge elements of original material. Furthermore, physical archives are considered in their environmental context, through physical processes in the embodied act of using, and through their meaning to the user. The purpose of this article is to highlight the tacit, assumed and taken-for-granted aspects of using original archival material to better understand the conversion from physical to digital. This paper explores digital technology skills in commencing undergraduate pre-service teachers at a large Australian metropolitan university by surveying all first year students over a period of eight years (n=2821). The survey gathered self-reported data using Likert-scale questions and this was analysed using descriptive statistics. It was found that the technological skills of many of the students was lower than that assumed by tertiary educators. Additionally, there was no evidence of an increase in the general technological skills in commencing students over the 2012 to 2019 period. In the realm of Digital Twins (DTs), industry experts have emphasised the pivotal concept of the Federation of Twins, envisioning seamless collaboration across sectors driven by shared semantics. In response to this challenge, the Cognitive Digital Twin (CDT) integrates the DT framework with formal semantics, specifically ontologies. This paper introduces a comprehensive five-step methodology for CDT development. Furthermore, it becomes possible to incorporate human expertise into the DT ecosystem by adopting an ontological approach. The CDT enhances DT services with advanced reasoning capabilities, leading to a profound semantic enrichment of the data. The presented methodology has been validated using a use case where the CDT is employed to detect malfunctions, significantly reducing manual intervention. Background: In a pain drawing (PD), the patient shades or marks painful areas on an illustration of the human body. This simple yet powerful tool captures essential aspects of the subjective pain experience, such as localization, intensity, and distribution of pain, and enables the extraction of meaningful information, such as pain area, widespreadness, and segmental pattern. Starting as a simple pen-on-paper tool, PDs are now sophisticated digital health applications paving the way for many new and exciting basic translational and clinical applications. Objective: Grasping the full potential of digital PDs and laying the groundwork for future medical PD apps requires an understanding of the methodological developments that have shaped our current understanding of uses and design. This review presents methodological milestones in the development of both pen-on-paper and digital PDs, thereby offering insight into future possibilities created by the transition from paper to digital. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search covering PD acquisition , conception of PDs , PD analysis , and PD visualization. Results: The literature search yielded 435 potentially relevant papers, from which 53 methodological milestones were identified. These milestones include, for example, the grid method to quantify pain area, the pain-frequency maps, and the use of artificial neural networks to facilitate diagnosis. Conclusions: Digital technologies have had a significant influence on the evolution of PDs, whereas their versatility is leading to ever new applications in the field of medical apps and beyond. A call for papers for the special issue of "Journal of Educational Computing Research" regarding education and problematic behaviors on the misuse of digital technology is presented.

Numerous research papers have used Irish-only data to test for the presence of an investment gap for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In this paper, we use cross-country firm-level survey data from the World Bank Enterprise Surveys to explore the investment patterns of Irish enterprises in a cross-country context and test whether an investment gap is present when compared to other countries. We use an accelerator model of investment which links capital expenditure to firm output growth and test the sensitivity of investment to this key fundamental for Ireland and other countries. We then estimate whether Irish firms face an investment gap relative to their European peers. We test whether any differences in cross-country patterns are driven by variation in financial factors (such as credit access or indebtedness) or firm quality (managerial experience, website usage, operating profitability). We find that Ireland's investment in fixed tangible assets is relatively well explained by these factors whereas a clear underinvestment in research and development expenditure emerges. The advent of 3D virtual presentation technology for clothing has led to the gradual popularisation of digital virtual clothing in the modern fashion industry. However, there remains a gap between the application of this technology and the integration of cultural attributes in the field of digital communication of traditional cultural clothing. Consequently, the objective of this paper is to propose the establishment of a fusion system integrating archaeological research on traditional culture with emerging virtual presentation technology. This paper draws inspiration from the replicability and easy dissemination of digital products to combine cultural archaeology and digital technology. The aim is to provide ideas for the diversity of dissemination of cultural heritage. The research object is Diplomatic Envoys, a Chinese mural painting of the Tang Dynasty that depicts friendly exchanges between countries. The research is divided into two research stages. A CLO3D software-based digital restoration test was conducted to reproduce the costumes of officials and foreign envoys depicted in the Tang Dynasty mural. The FAHP model was employed to verify the accuracy of the restoration results. The experiment demonstrated that the digitally reconstructed clothing exhibited a high degree of similarity to the unearthed mural figure clothing object. Furthermore, the restoration result passed the credibility verification, resulting in a 'credible' outcome. The application of digital virtual simulation clothing restoration methods offers two key advantages. Firstly, in comparison with traditional clothing restoration methods, digital restoration enables the rapid assessment of the resulting clothing effect, thereby reducing the likelihood of secondary damage to cultural relics due to manual errors. Secondly, the benefits of digital technology facilitate the convenient storage, replication, and dissemination of clothing data information. Data can not only be extended to online exhibition halls but also to game animation, clothing production, and other fields for the purposes of creative redesign and information dissemination. The use of digital technologies in managing bowel conditions has been a topic of interest among healthcare practitioners. The objectives of this paper were to provide information about the types of digital technologies that have been used for bowel management and the context of the studies; identify the gaps and challenges in digital technologies for bowel management and propose new methods and techniques for the application of digital technologies in bowel management. A scoping review was conducted following the principles of Preferred Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). A search was conducted on six academic databases. 1891 papers were retrieved from the initial search; however, 6 papers were included based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The findings suggest that published work focused mainly on a research context and with a narrow focus targeting sub-categories of bowel conditions and not implemented in the context of everyday use. The findings also illustrate the variety of early-stage developments focused on increasing support for severe bowel dysfunction, for example, through biofeedback to aid muscle control training, or the placement of artificial anal sphincters to increase rectal perception. However, technology to support bowel management for broader populations with less severe or variable symptoms appears limited. Future work would be to conduct empirical research in the application of advanced technologies such as on-organ sensors in managing bowel conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to develop a better understanding about the benefits that can be realized after implementing voice-based chatbot technologies in banks. Furthermore, this paper aims to investigate the challenges faced by organizations when implementing such technologies. This study followed a qualitative approach where semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts from mid to senior managerial levels working in a leading bank operating in Jordan and had implemented the voice-based chatbot technology. Implementing voice-based chatbot technology for the first time in a Jordanian bank has positively impacted the growth of the bank, increased customers satisfaction, and added a competitive advantage value to the bank. On the other side, different challenges faced the bank when it implemented this technology like issues related to security, compliance, integration, and infrastructure limitations. This paper can be considered in the foremost research conducted to investigate the implementation of AI-based chatbot in Jordanian banks. It demonstrated the benefits and challenges resulting from performing digital innovations introduced as innovative services in the banking sector that can inform the experience to other banks interested to implement such technologies. In recent years, the use of Serious Games has become increasingly popular in the field of Digital Health. These games, which are designed to educate, inform, and engage users in various aspects of healthcare, have shown promising results in improving health outcomes and promoting healthy behaviours. Serious Games have shown particularly promising in the care of elderly populations. In fact, with the ageing of the global population, there is an increasing need for innovative solutions that can help older adults stay healthy, active, and independent. In this context, Serious Games have emerged as a valuable tool for promoting healthy ageing, preventing age-related diseases, reducing info-exclusion, and improving the quality of life of older adults. This paper explores the conceptualisation of a Serious Games model focused on the elderly population in a Digital Health environment. The model covers the identification and levels of eventual phase of disease allowing the definition of profiles for patients and non-patients; enables the recognition of the need for therapy and recognizes a set of characteristics like usability, accessibility and functionality considered by the state-of-the-art guidelines as essential in the definition of the Serious Games structure. The main objective of this paper is to implement an IoT control and visualization system with DT and AR in a digital transformation space. A system is shown to create a technological demonstrator environment that visualizes and monitors sensor data on physical IoT devices in real time, allowing users to interact and operate them through an ESP32 module with data transmission with the MQTT protocol and an AR application developed in Unity and Vuforia. The study results successfully demonstrated the efficiency of real-time communication between the IoT device and the AR application, as well as the efficient ability to perform tasks, validated by users with no prior experience. In the context of the current global recession, big tech and big data corporations have amassed a disturbing amount of power and influence in this new phase of platform and surveillance capitalism. Against this backdrop, and inspired by Gibson-Graham's invitation to look for difference rather than dominance, this paper considers digital commons as a viable post-capitalist alternative. In particular, this research's focus will be on the international activist collective, FairCoop. This group, inspired by ideas of degrowth, decentralization and post-capitalism, has developed its own crypto-currency, FairCoin, along with tools and infrastructures that seek to challenge the economic and digital status quo. Grounded in ethnographic fieldwork, this investigation explores the practices and experiences of this alternative economic project. Drawing on commoning literature, the paper engages with the challenges that such initiatives face, such as the risky entanglements with crypto-markets, governance mechanisms, transparency and management issues, scalability and individual burnouts. By studying FairCoop and associated collectives such as Komun and Kaana, this paper demonstrates how alternative economies, blockchain initiatives and digital commoning can contribute to more progressive and transformative technological innovation. Yet, focusing on the practice and (re)production of the commons reveals a multifaceted picture. I argue that if we are to study the present and future of digital commoning, it is crucial to engage with difficult issues such as tensions, hierarchies and democratic deficits. These cases will be discussed to further the debate on the possibilities for post-capitalism in the digital era and bring alternative economies, technological innovation and commoning perspectives into a fruitful dialogue. This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of digitalization and cybersecurity in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), using the R tool Bibliometrix, with a total of 417 papers. First, our paper contributes to academia by showing that research on this topic is grouped into four clusters corresponding to four research lines: Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory; Industry 4.0 and SME; SME and Cybersecurity; Digitalization, SMEs, and Entrepreneurship. Second, our paper contributes to the literature by highlighting the existing gaps. We see that the digital transformation of SMEs entails increasing exposure to possible cyberattacks, which can be a determining factor for digitalization and, additionally, can affect the future of the SME business. In this context, we see that this gap has not been covered, as research lines have been found that focus on these issues but are unconnected. Regarding future research, we can predict that cybersecurity in SMEs will be a particular case of cybersecurity in firms, separated from research on digitalization in SMEs, which addresses issues such as smart factories and Industry 4.0 objectives in these enterprises. Fake news generation and propagation is a major challenge of the digital age, resulting in various social impacts namely bandwagon, validity, echo chamber effects, deceiving the public with spams, misinformation, malicious content and many more. The widespread proliferation of fake news not only fosters misinformation but also undermines the credibility of news sources. The veracity of the information is a major concern at all the stages of generation, publication, and propagation. To comprehend the critical need for addressing this pervasive problem, this research paper presents a framework for automatic detection of fake news using a knowledge-based approach. An automatic fact checking mechanism is applied using concepts of Information Retrieval (IR), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Graph theory. The knowledge base is generated using Twitter dataset, which basically contains four attributes: Subject-Predicate-Object (SPO) triplet, SPO sentiment polarity, SPO occurrence, and topic modeling. These attributes serve as pivotal indicators for the development of a knowledge base, subsequently employed to detect prevalent patterns and traits linked to deceptive or false information. We have employed Named Entity Recognition (NER) model to extract SPO triples and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) for topic modeling, thereby contributing to knowledge base generation. To evaluate the efficacy and efficiency of our proposed model, we utilize deep learning algorithms like RNN, GRU, LSTM, GPT-3 and BERT Transformer providing an acceptable level of accuracy. For decades, accounts and speculations on the emergence of digitally-augmented environments have suggested utopian, and dystopian, visions of increased spatial fluidities - doing anything from anywhere - in which the role of specific places could become redundant. The emergence of smart urbanism, through technocratic visions of central, algorithmic control, could materialize such centrifugal detachment from place and local context, as it operates a shift of agency from space and community to code. Are, therefore, the hyper-local scale, and neighbourhoods, relevant entities in our increasingly digital urban environments? This paper makes a case for the smart neighbourhood not as a plain, pre-determined, functional sub-unit of a centrally controlled and automated smart metropolis, but as a radically divergent - yet necessarily complementary - dimension of it. The discussion looks at the scales of the locale - and of the hyper-local - as the enablers of a re-combined and re-energized spatial and digital agency. It discusses the importance of local appropriation and contextualization of technology - as opposed to the 'off-the-shelf' adoption of civic infrastructural systems and management software, and of enabling significant social innovation and community involvement and participation. However, once the importance of re-combining space, community and technology at the local scale has been explored, the paper discusses how the point is not opposing the smart neighbourhood to the smart city through a simplistic bott om-up vs top-down dualist vision, but rather reflecting on how these dimensions should work together. Design and development strategies that aim to conjugate the very bespoke and pilot with the scalable, and the qualitative with the quantitative, while enabling local innovation and experimentation, are needed to envisage a grounded, sustainable, and effective smart city. As digital technologies have advanced more rapidly, the number of paper documents recently converted into a digital format has exponentially increased. To respond to the urgent need to categorize the growing number of digitized documents, the classification of digitized documents in real time has been identified as the primary goal of our study. A paper classification is the first stage in automating document control and efficient knowledge discovery with no or little human involvement. Artificial intelligence methods such as Deep Learning are now combined with segmentation to study and interpret those traits, which were not conceivable ten years ago. Deep learning aids in comprehending input patterns so that object classes may be predicted. The segmentation process divides the input image into separate segments for a more thorough image study. This study proposes a deep learning-enabled framework for automated document classification, which can be implemented in higher education. To further this goal, a dataset was developed that includes seven categories: Diplomas, Personal documents, Journal of Accounting of higher education diplomas, Service letters, Orders, Production orders, and Student orders. Subsequently, a deep learning model based on Conv2D layers is proposed for the document classification process. In the final part of this research, the proposed model is evaluated and compared with other machine-learning techniques. The results demonstrate that the proposed deep learning model shows high results in document categorization overtaking the other machine learning models by reaching 94.84%, 94.79%, 94.62%, 94.43%, 94.07% in accuracy, precision, recall, F-score, and AUC-ROC, respectively. As we move further into the digital age, machine learning algorithms have become increasingly popular in E-learning for their ability to predict learner failure and assess behavioral engagement, particularly in mobile learning environments. This paper reports on the systematic review conducted by the most relevant research in the literature that uses machine learning algorithms to predict failure, verify acceptance of mobile technology, and analyze behavioral engagement in mobile learning platforms. The search was performed using research papers extracted from four commonly used databases and published between 2010 and 2023; the last database access was on 15/05/2023. Guided by the PRISMA checklist, the review followed a structured approach to select, analyze, and report relevant studies. Studies were selected based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, focusing on peer-reviewed articles that empirically test the application of machine learning in mobile learning contexts. Of the initial 332 screened articles, 20 were eligible for inclusion. This paper draws on information infrastructures (IIs) in science and technology studies (STS), as well as on feminist STS scholarship and contemporary critical accounts of digital technologies, to build an initial mapping of the infrastructural mechanisms and implications of large language models (LLMs). Through a comparison with discriminatory machine learning (ML) systems and a case study on gender bias, I present LLMs as contested artefacts with categorising and performative capabilities. This paper suggests that generative systems do not tangibly depart from traditional, discriminative counterparts in terms of their underlying probabilistic mechanisms, and therefore both technologies can be theorised as infrastructures of categorisation. However, LLMs additionally retain performative capabilities through their linguistic outputs. Here, I outline the intuition behind this phenomenon, which I refer to as "language as infrastructure". While traditional, discriminative systems "disappear" into larger IIs, the hype surrounding generative technologies presents an opportunity to scrutinise these artefacts, to alter their computational mechanisms and introduce governance measures [1]. I illustrate this thesis through Sharma's [2] formulation of "broken machine", and suggest dataset curation and participatory design as governance mechanisms that can partly address downstream harms in LLMs (Barocas, et al., 2023).
