This study of the life and work of the Italian geologist Giovanni Capellini (1833-1922) started in 2005 during the process of restoring and reorganizing that portion of his personal archive kept at the Academy Lunigianese of Sciences in La Spezia, Italy. Until now, little has been written on the scientific achievements of Giovanni Capellini, resulting from a sixty year career. This contribution aims to offer an overview of the scientific biography of Capellini, his publications and manuscript documents, and the main contents of that portion of his personal archive housed in La Spezia. Capellini began his long career in the natural sciences by educating himself in La Spezia, after which he enrolled in and graduated from the University of Pisa, Italy. He concluded his formal education with one year of educational travel in Europe. At the age of twenty-seven, Capellini obtained the professorship of geology at the University of Bologna and remained there for sixty years. During his career, he achieved several important goals, among them the reorganization of the Geological and Paleontological Museum of the University of Bologna. The Museum was founded in 1871 and soon became an institution recognized for its excellence in Italy and throughout Europe. By the conclusion of his career in 1922, he was a professor of international fame, Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, and supporter of international scientific dialogue as an indispensable means for the advancement of knowledge. Capellini always promoted the diffusion of natural sciences studies, both within Italy and throughout Europe. He contributed to three regional mapping projects that were incorporated into the geological map of Italy. A biography of painter Honorée Sharrer is presented. Sharrer was born in 1920 and took up painting at an early age. She became an artist-member of the San Diego Fine Arts Society at the age of 16 and graduated from the Bishop's School in La Jolla, California. Sharrer married historian Perez Zagorin in 1947 and gave birth to a son, Adam Desmond, in 1953.

This paper sketches the biographies of three early seventeenth-century intellectuals by the name of Romanos Nikiforou: a uniate hieromonk from Thessaloniki who studied at the Collegio Greco in Rome and became a parish priest in Sicily; another hieromonk from Thessaloniki who lived in Paris, frequented the Capuchins and wrote a grammar of vernacular Greek; and an orthodox priest from Corinth who went to Rostock and sought the help of Gustavus Adolphus for the liberation of Greece. This paper aims to prove that these three intellectuals are in fact one and the same person, and to establish the connection between planning an armed revolt in the Peloponnese and composing a grammar. Donald S. Miller died over 10 years ago. He was recognized at his demise but has not been covered much in the subsequent literature. He had many important impacts, from being Regional Archaeologist for the U.S. Forest Service in California and Chief Archaeologist at the UCLA Archaeological Survey, to doing important fieldwork, making a significant teaching movie, shaping the careers of many archaeologists, and helping found the SCA. This paper explores the career of an unusual eighteenth-century innovator. George Boswell was not only the author of the first detailed and practical guide to the creation, lay-out and management of water meadows, but is also a good example of a working farmer eager to incorporate new ideas, new crops and improved implements into his farming practice. His advice was sought and his expertise valued by several leading agriculturalists during the late eighteenth century, including Arthur Young and Robert Bakewell. His letters to George Culley provide a great deal of information about farming methods and conditions in Dorset, and his contributions to the Bath and West Agricultural Society give details of his construction of and experiments with ploughs, rakes, drills and threshing machines. Myron Scholes called Merton H. Miller our Socrates. He was right. Miller (1923-2000) created the leading breakthroughs of Corporate Finance Economics over the last forty-plus years. The legendary Modigliani-Miller theorems of leverage and dividend policy irrelevance to the aggregate value of the firm, the battles he brought on for the futures markets, his views railing against restrictive regulatory interventions, and the pillars he devised to underlie the mainstreams of "post-Millerian" Corporate Finance Economics are among many other things the revelation of his philosophy. In one word, he was a genius. In this paper, we endeavor to shed some light on his life and the legacy of some of his unparalleled philosophical corollaries he left to academia. This paper explores the relationship between 2 persons much involved in the development of modern epidemiology, Jacob Yerushalmy and Abraham M. Lilienfeld. The formation of that relationship is described and the resulting influences by each individual on the other's professional work are discussed. Interactions between these 2 men contributed to several areas of epidemiologic development, including the effects of misclassification on observational study data, elements of epidemiologic causal inference, population-based linked databases, and the adaptation of statistical techniques by the epidemiology community. A biography of Grigore C. Moisel, Romanian mathematician and Professor at the University of Bucharest, Romania is presented. He was born in Tulcea, with a school training partly in Bucharest. His main teachers were his parents, in which his father was an important historian. He is named a provisional associate of Algebra at the University of Iasi at November 1, 1932. Moreover , at that moment, he was already the author of an important number of scientific papers.

A biography of Jean-Paul Zolésio, a pianist and mathematician, is presented. He was born in Monaco on June 29, 1947 and gained his baccalauréat from the Lycée Albert 1er in June 1966. He pursued a career in mathematics. He is the author and coauthor of several papers and influential books as well as became a regular organizer of various key meetings, conferences and workshops for mathematicians. A list of supervised theses is offered.

A biography is presented for Sir William Osler, born in Ontario in 1849, son of an Anglican missionary. He studied medicine at the Toronto School of Medicine and McGill University, studied in Europe, and was named Professor of the Institutes of Medicine at McGill at age 25. He then taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins medical school, then was appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University in 1905. He died in 1919. His book collection was the foundation of the Osler Library at McGill.

A biography of Tennessee senator and Speaker of the Senate Colonel Edward Ward is presented. It examines his relationship with U.S. president Andrew Jackson, his involvement in negotiations over the Tennessee-Kentucky border, and his role in developing education. The author considers Ward's death following a gun fight with brothers Lafayette Jones, Chamberlayne Jones, Caesar Augustus Jones, and Achilles Jones.

A biography of trader and judge Benjamin Fooy is presented. It examines his relations with the Chickasaw or Choctaw Indians, his marriage to Chickasaw Indian Sarah Fooy, and his knowledge of French. The author also comments on Fooy's move to the fourth Chickasaw Bluffs, or Memphis, Tennessee, and his mansion and slave plantation at the location called Fooy's Point. Governor of Spanish Louisiana Manuel Gayoso and Chickasaw chief Ugulayacabé are also discussed.

A biography is presented for Memphis, Tennessee African American lawyer and community development organizer James F. Estes. He was born in 1919 in Jackson, Tennessee and attended segregated schools, served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as an officer during World War II, got his law degree at Marquette University School of Law, and in 1959 represented African American defendant Burton Dodson on charges of murder. He died in 1967. The article also discusses the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S.

A biography is presented of the British sculptor Phillip King, who was born in 1934. Topics discussed include his involvement in the group of British sculptors known as the New Generation, the influence of English sculptor Anthony Caro on King, and the materials King used in the sculptors he created in the 1970s including steel, elmwood, and slate.
