The paper addresses a tour planning problem, which encompasses weakly specified constraints such as different kinds of activities together with corresponding spatial assignments such as locations and regions. Alternative temporal orders of planed activities together with underspecified spatial assignments available at different levels of granularity lead to a high computational complexity of the given tour planning problem. The paper introduces the results of an exploratory tour planning study and a Region-based Direction Heuristic, derived from the acquired data. A gesture-based interaction model is proposed, which allows structuring the search space by a human user at a high level of abstraction for the subsequent generation of alternative solutions so that the proposed Region-based Direction Heuristic can be applied. This paper describes ongoing work towards building a multimodal computer system capable of sensing the affective state of a user. Two major problem areas exist in the affective communication research. Firstly, affective states are defined and described in an inconsistent way. Secondly, the type of training data commonly used gives an oversimplified picture of affective expression. Most studies ignore the dynamic, versatile and personalised nature of affective expression and the influence that social setting, context and culture have on its rules of display. We present a novel approach to affective sensing, using a generic model of affective communication and a set of ontologies to assist in the analysis of concepts and to enhance the recognition process. We present our work on emotionally expressive avatars, animated virtual characters that can express emotions via facial expressions. Because these avatars are highly distinctive and easily recognizable, they may be used in a range of applications. In the first part of the paper we present their use in computer mediated communication where two or more people meet in virtual space, each represented by an avatar. Study results suggest that social interaction behavior from the real-world is readily transferred to the virtual world. Empathy is identified as a key component for creating a more enjoyable experience and greater harmony between users. In the second part of the paper we discuss the use of avatars as an assistive, educational and therapeutic technology for people with autism. Based on the results of a preliminary study, we provide pointers regarding how people with autism may overcome some of the limitations that characterize their condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with multi-channel interaction managing thru an intermediation between channels and Interactive e-Services (IeS). After work on modeling and theoretical framework, we implemented a platform: Ubi-Learn, which is able to manage this kind of interaction thru an intermediation middleware based on a Multi-Agents System (MAS): Jade. The issue addressed here is linked to the way you choose a channel depending on the user's task. First, we have encoded several ad hoc rules (tacit knowledge) into the system. This paper describes an e-learning interface with multiple tutoring character agents. The character agents use eye movement information to facilitate empathy-relevant reasoning and behavior. Eye Information is used to monitor user's attention and interests, to personalize the agent behaviors, and for exchanging information of different learners. The system reacts to multiple users' eye information in real-time and the empathic character agents owned by each learner exchange learner's information to help to form the online learning community. Based on these measures, the interface infers the focus of attention of the learner and responds accordingly with affective and instructional behaviors. The paper will also report on some preliminary usability test results concerning how users respond to the empathic functions and interact with other learners using the character agents. In software design, the reuse issue brings the increasing of web services, components and others techniques. These techniques allow reusing code associated to technical aspect (as software component). With the development of business components which can integrate technical aspect with HCI, the composition issue has appeared. Our previous work concerned the GUI composition based on an UIDL as UsiXML. With the generalization of Multimodal User Interfaces (MUI), MUI composition principles have to be studied. This paper aims at extend existing basic composition principles in order to treat multimodal interfaces. The same principle as in the previous work, based on the tree algebra, can be used in another level (AUI) of the UsiXML framework to support the Multimodal User Interfaces composing. Voice packets with guaranteed QoS (Quality of Service) on the VoIP system are responsible for digitizing, encoding, decoding, and playing out the speech signal. The important point is based on the factor that different parts of speech over IP networks have different perceptual importance and each part of speech does not contribute equally to the overall voice quality. In this paper, we propose new additive noise reduction algorithms to improve voice over IP networks and present performance evaluation of perceptual speech signal through IP networks in the additive noise environment during realtime phone-call service. The proposed noise reduction algorithm is applied to pre-processing method before speech coding and to post-processing method after speech decoding based on single microphone VoIP system. For noise reduction, this paper proposes a Wiener filter optimized to the estimated SNR of noisy speech for speech enhancement. Various noisy conditions including white Gaussian, office, babble, and car noises are considered with G.711 codec. Also, we provide critical message report procedures and management schemes to guarantee QoS over IP networks. The word boundary detection has an application in speech processing systems. The problem this paper tries to solve is to separate words of a sequence of phonemes where there is no delimiter between phonemes. In this paper, at first, a recurrent fuzzy neural network (RFNN) together with its relevant structure is proposed and learning algorithm is presented. Next, this RFNN is used to predict word boundaries. Some experiments have already been implemented to determine complete structure of RFNN. Here in this paper, three methods are proposed to encode input phoneme and their performance have been evaluated. Some experiments have been conducted to determine required number of fuzzy rules and then performance of RFNN in predicting word boundaries is tested. Following last two years' RAM-SE (Reflection, AOP and Meta-Data for Software Evolution) workshop at the ECOOP conference, the RAM-SE 2006 workshop was a successful and popular event. As its name implies, the workshop's focus was on the application of reflective, aspect-oriented and data-mining techniques to the broad field of software evolution. Topics and discussions at the workshop included mechanisms for supporting software evolution, technological limits for software evolution and tools and middleware for software evolution. The workshop's main goal was to bring together researchers working in the field of software evolution with a particular interest in reflection, aspect-oriented programming and meta-data. The workshop was organized as a full day meeting, partly devoted to presentation of submitted position papers and partly devoted to panel discussions about the presented topics and other interesting issues in the field. In this way, the workshop allowed participants to get acquainted with each other's work, and stimulated collaboration. We hope this helped participants in improving their ideas and the quality of their future publications. The workshop's proceedings, including all accepted position papers can be downloaded from the workshop's web site and a post workshop proceeding, including an extension of the accepted paper is published byt the University of Magdeburg. This paper investigates a production planning problem in which the inventory is deteriorating at a constant rate, demand is price dependent and back-order is allowed. It is assumed in most previous works that back-ordering customers may not cancel their orders. However, in reality, many customers may withdraw or cancel their orders before receiving their orders. Tacking the cancellation phenomenon into account, this paper develops a continuous-time model to simultaneously determine the production decision and the selling price. A simple algorithm is used to obtain the optimal solutions. Numerical examples are also used to illustrate the solution searching procedure and the characteristics of the optimal decisions. In this paper, we handle a negotiation method in which a main negotiation consists of multiple sub-negotiations. In items allocation for commerce, there are some risks on the trade because the market balance is determined by supply and demand. The result of main negotiation is also determined by the order of sub-negotiations and agents' behaviors since agents' budgets have limitations on the actual commercial trading. However, it is difficult to decide the order of negotiations, such as simultaneous decisions and rotations. In this paper, we give the trading model in such cases, that is, agents purchase items by pooled buying. In actual trading as pooled buying, items are sold by the volume discount. Concretely, we discuss joint-stock company and private limited partnership on the web. In the negotiation phase, an agent proposes pooled buying based on the number of items and their prices considering their budgets. The degree of risks is calculated. All agents can see the risks with each item. Agents cooperate to the proposing agent based on the degree of risks. In this paper, we give two scenarios for trading. One is to avoid free riders who get surplus without risks. Another one is to promote agents' participation to increase social surplus. For risk aversion and promoting cooperation, we employ the side-payment policy, that is, cooperative agents' risks are preserved to a minimum. This paper presents a new philosophy to model the behavior of a Student in a Tutorial-like system using Learning Automata (LA). The model of the Student in our system is inferred using a higher-level of LA, referred to Meta-LA, which attempt to characterize the learning model of the Students (or Student Simulators), while the latter use the Tutorial-like system. To our knowledge, this is the first published result which attempts to infer the learning model of an LA when it is treated externally as a black box, whose outputs are the only observable quantities. Additionally, our paper represents a new class of Multi-Automata systems, where the Meta-LA communicate with the Students, also modelled using LA, in a synchronous scheme of interconnecting automata. A novel neural filter and its application to active control of nonlinear noise are proposed in this paper. This method helps to avoid the premature saturation of backpropagation algorithm; meanwhile, guarantees the system convergence by the proposed self-tuning method. The comparison between the conventional filtered-X least-mean-square (FXLMS) algorithm and proposed method for nonlinear broadband noise in active noise cancellation (ANC) system is also made in this paper. The proposed design method is very easy to be implemented and versatile to the other applications. Performance of a genetic algorithm for function optimization, often appeared in real-world applications, depends on its crossover operator strongly. Existing crossover operators are designed for intensive search in certain promising regions. This paper, first, discusses where the promising search regions are on the basis of some assumptions about the fitness landscapes of objective functions and those about a state of a population, and this discussion reveals that existing crossover operators intensively search some of the promising regions but not all of them. Then, this paper designs a new crossover operator for searching all of the promising regions. For utilizing the advantageous features of this crossover operator, a new selection model considering characteristic preservation is also introduced. Assembly design decision making is to provide a solution of currently violating design by evaluating assembly design alternatives with the consideration of the assembly design decision (ADD) criteria and of the causal interactions with manufacturing-environmental factors. Even though existing assembly design support systems have a systematic mechanism for determining the decision-criterion weight, the system still has a limitation to capture the interactions between manufacturing-environmental factors and ADD criteria. Thus, we introduce in this paper, Bayesian belief networks (BBN) for the representation and reasoning of the manufacturing-environmental knowledge. BBN has a sound mathematical foundation and reasoning capability. It also has an efficient evidence propagation mechanism and a proven track record in industry-scale applications. However, it is less friendly and flexible, when used for knowledge acquisition. This paper proposes a context-based image retrieval system based on color, area, and perimeter intercepted lengths of segmented objects in an image. It characterizes the shape of an object by its area and the intercepted lengths obtained by intercepting the object perimeter by eight lines with different orientations passing through the object center, and the object color by its mean and standard deviation (STD). Recently, we reported that the color-shape based method (CSBM) is better than conventional color histogram (CCH) and fuzzy color histogram (FCH) in retrieving computer-generated images. However, its performance is only fair in the retrieval of natural images. For CSBM, object color is treated as uniform by reducing the number of colors in an image to only 27 colors. In this paper, we improve the performance by representing the color features of an object with its mean and STD. During the image retrieval stage, t-value is calculated based on the color features of two images, one in the query and the other in the database. The result shows that the proposed method achieves better performance in retrieving natural images compared to CCH, FCH, and CSBM. This paper presents a method to describe the operational semantics of languages based on their meta-model. We combine the established high-level modelling languages MOF, OCL, and UML activities to create language models that cover abstract syntax, runtime configurations, and the behaviour of runtime elements. The method allows graphical and executable language models. These models are easy to read by humans and are formal enough to be processed in a generic model interpreter. We use Petri-nets as a running example to explain the method. The paper further proposes design patterns for common language concepts. In the model driven world languages are usually specified by a (meta) model of their abstract syntax. For textual languages this is different from the traditional approach, where the language is specified by a (E)BNF grammar. Support for the designer of textual languages, e.g. a parser generator, is therefore normally based on grammars. This paper shows that similar support for language design based on metamodels is not only possible, but is even more powerful than the support based on grammars. In this paper we describe how an integrated development environment for a language can be generated from the language's abstract syntax metamodel, thus providing the language designer with the possibility to quickly, and with little effort, create not only a new language but also the tooling necessary for using this language. In object technology, reusability is achieved primarily through class inheritance. In model engineering, where reusability is also important, it should be possible to extend a modeling artifact in a similar manner to add new capabilities. This paper presents a conceptual and practical approach to model extensibility, in which new models are created as derivations from base models. There are several situations where such an extensibility mechanism is useful and essential (e.g., in the case of hierarchies of metamodels). In order to achieve the goal of model extension, a precise definition of the extension mechanism is needed, based on a strict model definition. After describing the context of model extension through a motivating example, the paper outlines a practical implementation with characterization of its main conceptual properties. Improving the quality of life of elderly people is an emerging issue within our information society for both research and development. This paper addresses some issues on the development of applications for mobile devices, which have been designed to enhance the quality of life of the growing number of elderly people, and how they can be made more acceptable to the target population. We summarize some relevant issues in order to devise a research methodology to cover more than just the technological and physical aspects of user interfacing but also psychological and sociological aspects. One aspect of achieving this aim is to confront designers and developers with those problems that the elderly face daily and which are not easily understood - especially by younger designers and developers. Finally, we present some issues on how to simulate certain physical constraints of elderly by using the AgeSim, which is a simulation suit. However, not only physical but also cognitive impairment cause problems amongst elderly and result in fear, anxiety and consequently in rejection. The main goal of this paper is to raise awareness amongst developers on which problems are to be taken into considerations during design and development of mobile applications for the elderly. In many respects, cognitive difficulties and learning impairments are the poor relation of Universal Access (UA) research. Research into emotional impairments is even less common. A simple review of almost any general UA or Assistive Technology conference proceedings will typically show a strong bias towards sensory (vision and hearing) impairment, with a strong minority addressing motor impairment issues. This is an improvement on the situation a few years ago where the vast majority of the papers would be based solely on blindness, despite that particularly impairment constituting only 14% of people with a vision impairment and 2% of the overall prevalence of functional impairment in the general population [7]. This paper discusses the reasons why such a disparity exists and summarises the outcome of an International Symposium, hosted by the IBM Human Ability and Accessibility Center, to establish the state-of-the-art in research and best practices for supporting access for users with cognitive difficulties and learning impairments. Among the variety of heuristics evaluation methods available, four paramount approaches have emerged: Nielsen's ten usability heuristics, Shneiderman's Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design, Tognazzini's First Principles of Interaction Design, and a set of principles based on Edward Tufte's visual display work. To simplify access to a comprehensive set of heuristics, this paper describes an approach to integrate existing approaches (i.e., identify overlap, combine conceptually related heuristics) in a single table hereafter referred to as the Multiple Heuristics Evaluation Table (MHET). This approach also seeks to update these approaches by addressing existing gaps and providing concrete examples that illustrate the application of concepts. Furthermore, the authors identify three decision factors that support meaningful communication among stakeholders (e.g., product managers, engineers) and apply them to the MHET heuristics. In this paper we developed driver authentication system based on face recognition. Since 2D based face recognition has been shown its structural limitation, 3D model based approach for face recognition has been spotlighted as a robust solution under variant conditions of pose and illumination. Since a generative 3D face model consists of a large number of vertices, a 3D model based face recognition system is generally inefficient in computation time. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D face representation algorithm to reduce the number of vertices and optimize its computation time. Finally, we evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm with the Korean face database collected using a stereo-camera based 3D face capturing device. In addition, various decision making similarity measures were explored for final results. This paper presents guidelines for the design of self-administered surveys for visually impaired and blind people within a mixed mode approach. The different needs of the target group are fulfilled by offering different modes of participation (paper-based, braille-based, Web-based). Reading aids have in common that they enhance the focus of a specific piece of text or single word. This advantage turns into a disadvantage in terms of a clear overview and arrangement of the text elements on a page. Therefore text needs to be designed with cognitive processes and accessibility standards in mind. This is especially true for a survey questionnaire where each question and answer item has to convey its own special meaning independent from context. Traditionally assistive technology or environmental intervention introduced to help with independence in the home has tended to look ‘medical' or ‘institutional', focussing on function rather than aesthetic considerations and overlooking the aspirations of the householder. This paper describes a recent social housing project where the interior design of two newly built houses in Bradford, UK, for Habinteg Housing Association, were used to demonstrate that it is possible to balance form and function when designing to enhance independence in the home. The Bradford project builds on previous research in this area by the author and refers to the paper ‘Home Improvement for Independent Living' (Pearce 2003). The initial research was in turn inspired by the construction of the first Lifetime Homes in Hull in 1994 by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, in collaboration with Habinteg Housing Association. Several evaluations of team awareness systems showed, that interruptions and privacy violations during usage often lead to the rejection of the system by users. Most authors argue that this rejection is due to a fundamental dual trade-off between sending awareness information and privacy, and between receiving awareness information and disruption or resource consumption. While the assumption of a fundamental trade-off is widely accepted in state-of-the-art research, this paper disputes the predominant hypothesis. Instead, it is argued, that the trade-off is not of fundamental nature, but caused by neglecting elementary aspects in the design process. In order to verify this line of argument, a novel interface concept for mediating socio-emotional awareness information is presented. To verify the validity of the conceptual approach, several evaluations were conducted. The evaluations verified the approach of this paper and showed, that a cautious interface design can enhance user privacy in multi-user awareness systems and minimize disruptive effects on primary tasks, without reducing awareness mediation and usability. After observing children playing games, two design-engineering students designed a new concept for an interactive playground, the dot °. Its basic idea is to shift the computer screen onto the floor. In order to design optimal interfaces (hardware) and game scenarios (software) for everyone to enjoy, the dot °team decided to adopt an inclusive design process. This paper starts with a discussion of popularism in design, which critiques the conventional welfare designers' approach to treat 'users' as study subjects. From the design of the design workshops to the final design solution, this paper presents how a group of young design students worked with a design researcher to formulate their first user-involvement design experience in such a way that all participants in the process could engage in the inclusive experience of exchanging knowledge between designers and users. Finally, the paper documents the user-involvement process from the perspectives of different collaborators, including design students, design researcher, high school students and their school education consultant. This paper will look at the Challenge Workshop, a knowledge transfer model on the inclusive design process based on the seven DBA Inclusive Design Challenges organised at the Royal College of Art (RCA) since 2000 by the author in collaboration with the Design Business Association, the leading trade association for designers in the UK. This mentored annual competition sees leading UK design firms work with consumers with severe disabilities to develop innovative, inclusive and aspirational product and service prototypes for the mainstream market. It will focus on how this collaborative model has been further developed into creative workshops of varying lengths and iterations in different contexts in the UK, Japan, Israel and Singapore to inspire and inform designers, engineers and others of the innovative possibili-ties of inclusive design and in the process change their perceptions. The paper will also describe how the workshop has been adapted to and addressed the different knowledge transfer challenges of each cultural context and will show examples of some of the outstanding design proposals that have emerged. Even with the introduction of computer technology, paper-based artifacts remain ubiquitous in hospital settings. The need to manually transfer and update information from the physical to the digital realm is a common practice among hospital staff, which, although usually well managed, at times becomes a source for errors and inconsistencies. This paper presents an augmented patient chart system that preserves the use of paper and allows capturing information directly to the system through the use of a digital pen. An evaluation of the system with 22 volunteers indicates a significant reduction in the number of errors while reading information, a significant increment on the accuracy while annotating data, as well as a trend towards less time spent while annotating data on the digital paper. In this paper authors review several fundamental issues necessary for the design of inclusive human-computer interaction systems. The main objective is to vindicate the adoption of the Universal Accessibility paradigm in the design of main stream applications. Given that the authors think that current technology and design methods and tools are mature enough for inclusive design, they studied the conditions for its full deployment and propose the elimination of the found obstacles. In this paper, after justifying the importance of the Design for All, the main restrictions to inclusive design are reviewed and the need for a user oriented approach is showed. Other crucial matters to ensure inclusive design, such as user full participation and ethical and social impact avoidance, are analyzed. Access to e-Government services, such as welfare, housing and financial assistance is typically achieved through accessing, completing and submitting paper-based forms. Current UK e-Government strategies indicate that such service access forms will be made available online. With the aging population considered as a primary user of these services this paper promotes the need to establish older adults' online form design requirements. Building on previous research [see 8], the current investigation validates and extends previous online form design requirements for an aging user group. In the paper we present the first evaluation results obtained in the framework of ALPE (Accessible Learning Platform for Europe - EC-029328) a market validation project partially funded by the European Commission through the European Community Programme "eTEN". During the first three months of the project, ALPE service is being customised to the needs of end-users in Spain, the U.K. and Greece. In addition, a small scale test of the service has already been performed by a group of visually and hearing impaired and adult learners coordinated by SIDAR Foundation. In this paper we describe i) ALPE service, including the platform and the courses offered, ii) the validation process and iii) the results from the initial end-user evaluation. This paper described a system which could measure cursor movement and control site motion simultaneously. In addition to evaluate a client's pointing and selecting proficiency, CAT Motor system, developed on the basis of the previous CAT system, was also used to detect the motion of his control site. This feature could provide clinical professionals more detailed information when comparing the difference of performance among devices. The CAT Motor system consisted of four basic types of mouse operating skills, including clicking, cursor moving, cursor moving and clicking, and dragging. The CAT Motor recorded the location and the response of the pointing device and captured the picture of the control site synchronally. Then, the system visualized the results of cursor moving and control site motion on the screen. The CAT Motor system not only provided the professionals with an objective mean of evaluating specific difficulties of mouse operating difficulties, but also allowed them to evaluate the effort of the motor control training. Our paper discusses research on using multimodal interaction to improve usability of mobile data entry. This can benefit users of mobile technologies such as mobile workers, construction crews, and students collecting data during field trips. The evaluation of a mobile multimodal application for construction field work was conducted in the laboratory. Designing this laboratory experiment required a detailed definition of the type of device to be used, user requirements, including interaction techniques and usage context. During this work we discovered a need to develop a generic evaluation framework to assist in the selection of mobile technology and interaction techniques for further testing. The development of such a framework for municipal inspections with a focus on field inspections is discussed. This paper presents examples of using our framework to gain a better understanding of the contextual aspects influencing the feasibility of using mobile technology in the field. One very important aspect of computer programming is reading source code. Whilst this is a relatively simple process for sighted programmers, for blind computer programmers this presents a significant problem. Navigating through and comprehending often thousands of lines of code can be time consuming and difficult. Current development environments have many features that aid the reading of source code for sighted users, however, most of these features are visual in nature and are not translated well into audio by general screen-reader applications. Research has suggested that the use of fisheye views could aid navigation and enhance performance in program comprehension activities for blind programmers. This paper reports the results of a study into creating a better fisheye view of Java source code, by improving the method used to determine each line's 'global importance' or 'Level of Detail' (LOD). The traditional LOD determination method uses only the indentation level of a line to calculate its overall importance. This paper describes the results of the study, and suggests some of the issues which may need to be considered in developing an improved LOD calculation for programming source code. This paper reviews several techniques we have discovered while trying to extend the Firefox browser to support people with visual, motor, reading, and cognitive disabilities. Our goal throughout has been to find ways to make on-the-fly transformations of Web content including adjustments of text and image size, text style, line and letter spacing, text foreground color, text background color, page background removal, content linearization, and reading text aloud. In this paper, we focus primarily on the changes we make to the browser's Document Object Model (DOM) to transform Web content. We review the kinds of approaches we have used to make DOM modifications sufficiently fast and error free. We highlight the problems posed by Web pages with a mix of static and dynamic content generated by client-side scripts and by Web pages that use both fixed and relative placement of page elements, pages of the sort we expect to see in increasingly in the future. This paper describes the evaluation of an intuitive mobile environment controller. Through its 3D-based user interface, the PDA based controller provides the user with mobile access to her/his physical environment and ambient media. The goal of this usability evaluation is to test the performance and analyse the user acceptance of 3D-based interaction systems compared with traditional WIMP-based controllers. At first this paper describes the interaction model which has been evaluated. Then it explains the experiment and the approach of the evaluation. Finally we present and discuss our results. This paper is based on a preliminary research conducted in 2005 into the current level of web accessibility in China. We evaluated a few websites which are meant to be information portals for the visually impaired. Results of the evaluations show none of them is compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1) [1] Level A checkpoints and most of them are inaccessible at all. Causes behind this situation may include lack of legislation from the government and lack of accessibility awareness of web designers. However, we found Chinese Web accessibility also faces more of a challenge as a result of the complications of Chinese language itself. We hope this paper could bring the attention of both Chinese government and Chinese web designers on web accessibility and also help international stakeholders to understand the facts in China. This paper presents the results of an exploratory study, which aimed to devise a means of improving web accessibility for users with impairments. It looks at how web pages can be rated for accessibility using specific algorithms. These algorithms analyse and select web pages according to user preferences. The study gathered user defined ratings of web page elements, for different categories of special needs' users that affect accessibility. The algorithms were then created using the results of these ratings. The paper also demonstrates the work in progress in relation to the extension of the Computer Aided Internet Navigation (CAIN) system, which aims to improve accessibility to web based information by re-ordering search results according to user needs. With the introduction of large-scale open systems, the need for managing interactions between agents, and in particular for managing the entry of a new agent into an existing system, becomes an increasingly more important objective. Without such management, there may be significant implications for the performance of such systems, negating the benefits to be gained from openness. In this paper, we sketch a process by which open multi-agent systems may be engineered, through the establishment of a system specification to be used by designers of agents that will enter the system, and by the system itself to check that an agent entering a system complies with the system constraints. While not fully detailed, the paper provides an initial model and a clear direction as to how such a system may be constructed, offering a new way of developing open multi-agent systems. The dependability of open multi-agent systems is a particular concern, notably because of their main characteristics as decentralization and no single point of control. This paper describes an approach to increase the availability of such systems through a technique of fault tolerance known as agent replication, and to increase their reliability through a mechanism of agent interaction regulation called law enforcement mechanism. Therefore, we combine two frameworks: one for law enforcement, named XMLaw, and another for agent adaptive replication, named DimaX, in which the decision of replicating an agent is based on a dynamic estimation of its criticality. Moreover, we will describe how we can reuse some of the information expressed by laws in order to help at the estimation of agent criticality, thus providing a better integration of the two frameworks. At the end of the paper, we recommend a means to specify criticality monitoring variation through a structured argumentation approach that documents the rationale around the decisions of the law elements derivation. This paper studies the effect of path delay on SCTP performance. It focuses on the SCTP fast retransmit algorithm and demonstrates that the performance in the current retransmission strategy will degrade acutely when the secondary path delay is less than the primary path delay at a certain level. The performance degradation is due to the disordered SACKs and constant congestion window size during the fast retransmit phase. Some modifications aimed at these problems are proposed and evaluated. This paper also identifies that the cause of the performance degradation in SCTP is a result of the single path configuration oriented design of the current fast retransmit algorithm. The future development of Air Traffic Management (ATM), set by the ATM 2000+ Strategy, involves a structural revision of ATM processes, a new ATM concept and a system approach for the ATM network. This requires ATM services to go through significant structural, operational and cultural changes that will contribute towards the ATM 2000+ Strategy. Moreover, from a technology viewpoint, future ATM services will employ new systems forming the emergent ATM architecture underlying and supporting the European Commission's Single European Sky Initiative. Introducing safety relevant systems in ATM contexts requires us to understand the risk involved in order to mitigate the impact of possible failures. This paper is concerned with trust in technology. Technology innovation supports further (e.g., safety or performance) improvements, although there is often a lack of trust in changes. This paper argues that organizations need to identify trust strategies and policies supporting the delivery of technology innovation. This paper addresses questions regarding the decidability of hybrid automata that may be constructed hierarchically and in a modular way, as is the case in many exemplar systems, be it natural or engineered. Since an important step in such constructions is a product operation, which constructs a new product hybrid automaton by combining two simpler component hybrid automata, an essential property that would be desired is that the reachability property of the product hybrid automaton be decidable, provided that the component hybrid automata belong to a suitably restricted family of automata. Somewhat surprisingly, the product operation does not assure a closure of decidability for the reachability problem. Nonetheless, this paper establishes the decidability of the reachability condition over automata which are obtained by composing two semi-algebraic o-minimal systems. The class of semi-algebraic o-minimal automata is not even closed under composition, i.e., the product of two automata of this class is not necessarily a semi-algebraic o-minimal automaton. However, we can prove our decidability result combining the decidability of both semi-algebraic formulæ over the reals and linear Diophantine equations. This paper concerns the optimal mode-switching problem in hybrid dynamical systems, where it is desired to compute the switching times between the modes in order to minimize a given cost functional defined on the state trajectory of the system. In this paper, we propose a new approach for formal verification of hybrid systems. To do so, we present a new refinement proof technique, a weak refinement using step invariants. As a case study of the approach, we conduct formal verification of the safety properties of NASA's Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) landing protocol. A new model is presented using the timed I/O automata (TIOA) framework [1], and key safety properties are verified. Using the new refinement technique presented in the paper, we first carry over the safety verification results from the previous discrete model studied in [2] to the new model.
