This paper addresses the need for accurate and objective safety assessments of bridges in Brazil taking into account the increase in traffic load and limited funding for infrastructure. In Brazil, the usual method of ensuring bridge safety involves strengthening based on design codes using deterministic analysis and partial safety factors. This method leads to an increase in the maintenance cost of the bridges. Structural reliability assessment, a higher-tier assessment method, is recommended globally for assessing the safety of existing bridges beyond current deterministic methods. This paper presents a study that evaluates the structural safety of existing road bridges in Brazil using the semi-probabilistic method defined in Brazilian standards and the full probabilistic method. The study selected six case studies of existing reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges to evaluate their structural safety concerning current normative loads. The results suggest that the partial safety factors defined in the Brazilian standards are consistent with international standards. The reliability analysis can guarantee the bridges' safety, even with increased traffic loads, without additional costs for structural strengthening. Therefore, the paper highlights the importance of promoting reliability analysis in Brazil to ensure the safety of existing bridges and promote cost-effective and objective safety assessments. This paper investigates the failure behavior of reinforced concrete beam - column joints (BCJs) strengthened with different schemes of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and the factors causing fracture. In the study, five reinforced concrete BCJ specimens having 1/1 geometric scale were tested under reversed-cyclic lateral loading. While one of them was used as a reference, the others were strengthened with CFRP. Damage development of the specimens was simultaneously monitored by the acoustic emission (AE) technique. Both the structural and AE data were combined to reveal the effects of CFRP strengthening schemes on the fracture pattern ana damage progress. Quantities, scales, levels, and locations of the damage show that the scale of the damage decreased with all strengthening procedures and that the strength and other mechanical properties improved. In addition, extending the strengthening material to the columns and beams contributed more to the structural behavior in terms of strength, energy dissipation capacity and rigidity as well as crack development. Although strengthening by wrapping only the beam and column extensions of the joint can give the desired performance in terms of load bearing capacity, it is not recommended owing to an increased risk of major shear cracks. This paper focuses on the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with carbon–glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (C-GFRP) plates under different anchoring schemes. The study consisted of four reinforced specimens: specimen CS-1 with no reinforcement and three groups of reinforced specimens SR-1, SR-2 and SR-3. The studies used a four-point bending test to evaluate the reinforcement effect of mechanically anchoring C-GFRP plates. The results of the analysis of load–deflection, strain and bearing capacity indicated that a better reinforcement effect was observed with fiber-reinforced polymer. The test results suggested that the occurrence time of critical oblique cracks was delayed and the development speed of critical oblique cracks was limited by mechanically anchoring the C-GFRP plates. C-GFRP plates significantly increased the stiffness of the reinforced specimen and reflected the superiority of mechanical anchoring. The ultimate shear capacity of the mechanically anchored C-GFRP plates has been significantly improved. With a reasonable increase in the amount of C-GFRP plate, the shear resistance of the test beam became stronger. Compared with the CS-1 specimen without reinforcement, the yield load values of the reinforced specimens SR-1, SR-2 and SR-3 increased by 5.56%, 18.80% and 26.50%, respectively. The ultimate load of reinforced specimens SR-1, SR- 2 and SR-3 increased by 11.64%, 17.47% and 31.51%, respectively. The researchers deduced their theoretical calculation method from the bearing capacity of RC beams strengthened by anchoring with carbon–glass-fiber-reinforced polymer plates. Fire hazards can cause severe and irrecoverable damage to reinforced concrete (RC) tunnel linings. Historically, major fire events have led to months of downtime and millions of dollars of losses owing to repair costs and affected operations. The potential threat to the serviceability of transportation networks emphasizes the need to establish a standardized and effective post-fire damage assessment method to guide repairs and restore functionality. This paper proposes a fire damage assessment framework for RC tunnel linings that integrates advanced modeling with visual inspections, non-destructive testing and material sampling. The framework quantifies fire damage to RC tunnel linings in terms of surface discoloration, crack width, concrete spalling, sectional temperatures, strength loss of materials and residual displacement. A damage classification system is proposed based on a collection of international guidelines and feedback from industry experts to map damage metrics and repair strategies. A case study, using data from recent experiments, is conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework and the benefits of the information obtained from numerical modeling. Fibers that are used to enhance the residual flexural and tensile strength of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) are reinforcing materials possessing good mechanical characteristics and properties. The effect of fiber on the flexural strength of FRC at elevated temperatures is limited and hence the present paper studies the influence of fibers (basalt, carbon, glass, polypropylene, polyvinyl alcohol) on strength grades M20, M30, M40 and M50 concrete specimens exposed to elevated temperature for a duration of 30, 60, 90 and 120 min, respectively, with an ISO 834 fire-curve. The objective of the study is to determine the effect of temperature on the flexural strength of fiber reinforced concrete prism and reinforced concrete beam specimens. Past studies have revealed that concrete's tensile strength is one of the primary factors affected by exposure to higher temperatures, more so than its compressive strength. The residual strength of the specimens was determined after cooling in air, and it was found that carbon fiber reinforced concrete specimens retained more residual flexural strength than the other specimens. The residual energy absorption capacity was analyzed and an empirical relationship was established to find the residual flexural strength in terms of the grade of concrete, the type of fiber and the duration of heating. This paper highlights the nature of the problem related to tunnel liners exposed to fire, and presents a possible approach for assessing the static behaviour of concrete structures under this extreme loading condition. The paper starts with some comments regarding material parameters for concrete subjected to high temperatures proposed by the European Standards. Subsequently, the main aspects to be considered in a structural fire analysis for a tunnel are highlighted by means of a simple calculation scheme. Based on this scheme, an advanced calculation method for assessing the structural behaviour of concrete tunnel linings during a fire event is described and validated. The classic approach commonly used for structural static analyses based on thin elements (beam or shell) is not particularly suitable for determining section forces in concrete structures exposed to temperature changes. This limited adequacy emerges especially in the case of fire. In such cases, the impact of a temperature increase on the structural behaviour could be significantly overestimated. The proposed approach for tunnel fire verification, by properly considering the concrete cracking, provides more realistic results, avoiding unnecessary over-dimensioning of steel reinforcements in new structures, or the protection of existing structures by, for example, additional insulating layers. Concrete bridges with box sections can be analysed and designed by a fine discretization based on shells. For a given shell region, it has 24 degrees of internal force freedom. Under certain loads, e.g. dead load, the 24 internal forces are fixed. However, under live load, the 24 internal forces are variable due to the movement of vehicles. To appproximate the most unfavourable case, the concept of the "corresponding force matrix" is proposed in this paper. The matrix has 48 rows corresponding to all the possible unfavourable cases of a shell region under live load and 24 columns corresponding to all the degrees of internal force freedom. For each row, only one single degree of internal force reaches its extremum (maximum or minimum) while the others take the corresponding values according to the same live load distribution. The principle also applies to loads combination that determines the required most unfavourable reinforcement of shells. This paper presents an effective strengthening strategy to increase the shear capacity of existing reinforced concrete structures. The solution is derived by using the upper-bound theorem of the theory of plasticity, a well-known approach in the design of new structures. It is shown how the solution can be effectively used to not only derive the shear capacity, but also to find out where strengthening reinforcements should be placed. The strategy is exemplified by a strengthening project wherein the cross beams on a three-span concrete bridge have insufficient local and global shear capacity. The cross beams are strengthened with unbonded steel bars, which are installed in drilled holes. First, it is shown how the formulation of kinematically admissible failure mechanisms are easily used in the assessment of the capacity of existing structures. Second, it is shown how the solution is effectively used to find the ideal placement of the steel bars. Finally, the paper presents some considerations on the strengthening method. It is argued that it is necessary to prestress the unbonded post-installed steel bars in order to ensure their concurrent contribution with the existing reinforcement and sliding in the concrete. The past several years have witnessed an increase in research on the nonlinear analysis of the structures made from reinforced concrete. Several mathematical models were created to analyze the behavior of concrete and the reinforcements. Factors including inelasticity, time dependence, cracking and the interactive effects between reinforcement and concrete were considered. The crushing of the concrete in compression and the cracking of the concrete in tension are the two common failure modes of concrete. Material models were introduced for analyzing the behavior of unconfined concrete, and a possible constitutive model was the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model. Due to the complexity of the CDP theory, the procedure was simplified and a simplified concrete damage plasticity (SCDP) model was developed in this paper. The SCDP model was further characterized in tabular forms to simulate the behavior of unconfined concrete. The parameters of the concrete damage plasticity model, including a damage parameter, strain hardening/softening rules, and certain other elements, were presented through the tables shown in the paper for concrete grades B20, B30, B40 and B50. All the aspects were discussed in relation to the effective application of a finite element method in the analysis. Finally, a simply supported prestressed beam was analyzed with respect to four different concrete grades through the finite element program. A recent contest of shear tests modelling was carried out in 2019. Teams from universities and consultancies around Europe were invited to predict the shear capacity of two reinforced concrete beams. The basics of the numerical models were to be set up according the Dutch NLFEM Guideline RTD 1016–1:2017. In the contest, two reinforced concrete beams without stirrups but having large depth (1200 mm), tested at Delft University of Technology, were selected as the modelling target. Most participants in the contest did not obtain good agreement with the test results. This paper presents a postdiction study on one of the two tests: H123. Based on this study, some adaptations are made to the recommendations of RTD 1016–1:2017 in order to approach the test results better. Reinforced concrete dapped-end connections are common in existing bridges and represent a critical component of the structure. Due to high stress concentrations in the re-entrant corner of the connection, dapped-ends typically feature inclined corner cracks that occur under service loads. Widening of these cracks due to material degradation and increasing loads can lead to yielding of the dapped-end reinforcement and subsequent failure of the connection. While most of the research devoted to predicting the peak resistance of such dapped-end connections has focused on the strut-and-tie and stress field modelling approaches, there remains a need for mechanical models that facilitate the direct use of on-site measurable data for assessing the strength of the connection. This paper presents the derivation of such a model based on first principles: kinematics, equilibrium and constitutive relationships. The model utilizes measured angles of the inclined crack as an input, and explicitly accounts for kinematic parameters such as the width and the length of the corner crack. A database of 47 tests from the literature featuring variable properties is used to validate the model. It is shown that the proposed approach captures well the peak resistance of dapped-end connections governed by the widening of the crack at the re-entrant corner, leading to an average strength experimental-to-predicted ratio of 1.10 and a coefficient of variation of 8.6%. This paper proposes a novel simplified analytical approach, named the slab strip model, to assess the ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) two-way slabs when large deflections are reached and tensile membrane action plays a key role. The motivation for the work derives from the fact that in recent years, investigations into the behaviour and modelling of laterally restrained and unrestrained RC slabs have been intensified owing to the reserve of bearing capacity provided by the tensile membrane action. The approach has been developed in the framework of the strip method and analyses the tensile membrane effect. Two failure criteria are accounted for: the maximum ultimate slab strip elongation and the maximum ultimate rotation of the structure at the supports. The rationality of the proposed approach is validated for laterally restrained slab strips and two-way laterally unrestrained simply supported slabs by comparing the analytical results with experimental data from the literature. The results show that despite its simplicity the method is accurate in estimating the load-carrying capacity of RC two-way slabs able to develop significant tensile membrane action. For its characteristics, the proposed method can be considered a useful initial design tool in a robustness context for conducting alternative load path analysis of RC structures characterised by two-way slabs. Glass beams may be reinforced to allow for a fail-safe behaviour and to avoid brittle and total collapse. This approach from reinforced concrete design is applied to glass and extended by post-tensioning the reinforcement by using Spannglass beams. A high-grade steel cable relieves the brittle material from unbeneficial tensile stress and accommodates permanent dead-load deflection. A structural concept was evolved that led to the development of Spannglass beams, which were tested for a span of 2 m. This concept was extended to larger spans in order to consider size effects and to provide this option to a broader field of application. To verify this, a 9 m pedestrian glass bridge with post-tensioned reinforcement was designed and tested experimentally. Three full-size glass specimens were utilised with adhesive connectors and two reinforcement designs. A post-tensioning concept was finalised and put into practice. Finally, four-point bending tests were performed to yield the maximum loads. This paper explains the experimental design, presents the results and provides conclusions of how to design workable structural glass beams with post-tensioned reinforcement. This paper describes the so-called Kiss Bridge. This structure resembles a kiss, a subtle touch of structures. The beams have been structurally designed to adapt the Japanese art of paper folding called "origami." The material used for constructing the floating beams is white reinforced concrete in the form of folded shells. The two geometrically different parts have distinct structural behaviors. The length of the main pathway of both structures is over 60 m. The pedestrian bridge crosses an artificial rainwater channel with a skew of 45° with respect to the referred channel. The joint between the cantilever structure and the Y-shaped one is located over the middle of the channel. Each stretch has different transversal sections. The pedestrian bridge is made with prestressed self-compacting reinforced concrete of 60 MPa. The foundation is shallow, comprising footings and footing beams made of 25 MPa conventional concrete. The cantilever structure with its foundations is designed as a semi-integral bridge whereas the Y-shaped one is an integral structure. The dynamic behavior of the structure was carefully studied to ensure that the dynamic loads generated by pedestrians do not cause excessive vibrations, especially to the cantilever structure, which could present dynamic interactions with the pedestrians walking. The bridge was recognized, in the 2014 edition of the fib Awards for Outstanding Concrete Structures, for having made a valuable contribution to the imageand promotion of concrete structures. Past earthquakes such as the Christchurch and Kaikoura events have highlighted the difficulties in residual capacity assessment and repair of plastic hinge damage in conventional reinforced concrete bridges. Also, with growing population densities in urban centres around the world, there is substantial interest in increasing earthquake resilience and minimising the disruption caused by new bridge construction. Two areas of research that address these aspects are low damage design and accelerated bridge construction. The aims of low damage design are to significantly reduce seismically induced damage to structural members, minimise residual drifts and limit damage to specifically designed components. At the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, within the bridge engineering space over the past decade or so, particular focus has been placed on these areas of research and their combination. The repair and seismic strengthening of a mid-1990s building structure in Christchurch, New Zealand, using fluid viscous dampers and buckling-restrained braces provides a case-study for mixed-system retrofit to improve the seismic performance of ductile reinforced concrete moment frames. The building was designed and detailed to essentially current standards but was very flexible and utilised a precast hollow-core floor system with thin topping slab which is vulnerable to deformations associated with moment frames, as demonstrated in recent New Zealand earthquakes. This paper highlights a simple displacement-based approach to setting retrofit design targets and performance verification. The retrofit using viscous dampers provided an efficient means to reduce ground motion-induced deformations and accelerations. The structural benefits to the rest of the project included no need for foundation strengthening and floor diaphragm strengthening being limited to only the perimeter hollow-core units. Development of the final design and viscous damper specification involved close coordination with the manufacturer to optimise the damper design, fabrication tolerances and site installation methods. The skew slabs possess a broad range of applications in bridges as well as in buildings because of severe space constraints in the congested urban localities and in locations, when there are some other architectural constraints and geographical obstacles, such as mountainous terrains, etc. The available design guidelines/codes give a set of design moment coefficients for a particular set of the skew angles and the slab aspect ratio only; these are based on the empirical formulae and the related performance studies conducted on such slabs in the past. This paper presents an improved theoretical formulation to predict the ultimate flexural capacity of laterally loaded reinforced concrete (RC) skew slabs. The study reveals the effect of the skew angle and aspect ratio on the moment field induced in the slab. The proposed formulation, therefore helps the analyst to proportionate the skew slab having any set of design constraints. In past earthquake disasters, numerous building structure piles were damaged due to soil liquefaction occurring during the earthquake. Damage to these piles, because they are underground, is difficult to find. The authors aim to develop a monitoring method for pile damage based on superstructure dynamic response. This paper investigated the basic relationship between the damage of large cross section cementitious piles and the dynamic response of the super structure using a centrifuge test apparatus. A dynamically excited specimen used simple cross section pile models consisting of aluminum rod and mortar, saturated soil (Toyoura sand) of a relative density of 40% and a super-structure model of a natural period of 0.63 s. In the shaking table test under a 50G field, excitation was a total of 3 Rinkai waves at different amplitudes. The maximum acceleration of each of the excitations was 602, 336 and 299 gal. The centrifuge test demonstrated the liquefaction of saturated soil and the failure behavior of piles. In the test results, the damage to the piles affected the predominant period of acceleration response spectrum on the footing of the superstructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most popular reinforced concrete patterns used in many countries until the First World War was the system of François Hennebique (1842-1921). The best known characteristics of the Hennebique design, which was used in buildings as well as in bridges, are the monolithic structure with continuous T-beams reinforced with bent-up bars overlapping the supports and the use of flat open U-shaped stirrups as transversal reinforcements. The reasons for the success of his company have been extensively studied. However, so far, the assessment of the carrying capacity of the system remains incomplete. The first part of this paper deals with the results of experimental bending tests up to fail-ure performed on three full-scale T-beam segments removed from a narrow gage railway viaduct built in Braine-l'Alleud (Belgium) in 1904. They aim at identify-ing the mechanisms of failure. The second part of the paper presents retrofitting actions to counteract the observed principal structural weakness--the too short overlapping length of the tensile rebars over the supports. When reinforced concrete members crack in flexure, the neutral axis shifts from the geometric center of the member towards the compression fibers. The amount of shift is related to the magnitude of the flexural moment, and the result is that there are tensile strains at the geometric center of the member that integrate to yield axial extensions. These extensions are not captured by the common elastic analysis programs. While non-linear analysis programs with fiber element modeling capabilities can capture these effects, they can be very complex to build and time-consuming to run. Neglecting consideration of the axial extensions associated with flexural forces in members can result in very significant underestimation of moments and shears in such members, not to mention axial forces—easily as much as 100% in specific situations. This paper presents the relevant theoretical equations for this effect, provide guidance for identifying structure types where this effect needs to be considered, and will also provide a simple method for capturing these effects in elastic analysis studies using commonly used programs. Protection of structural columns against severe damage is of most importance in the seismic design of RC structures. The seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns can be improved by concrete confinement in the plastic hinge regions, where the required quantity of confining reinforcement is influenced by the axial force ratio (AFR). Nevertheless, different design standards have different treatments on the AFR effect in the ductility design of RC columns. In this regard, this paper presents a scientific revisit, which is conjugated with a statistical analysis of 474 sets of experimental data, on the effect of AFR. It is found that the displacement and hysteretic dissipation capacities of the flexure-critical RC columns can be significantly reduced by increasing AFR. although the lateral strength shows a reversed trend. On the other hand, the displacement ductility of short columns is apparently not influenced by AFR, yet the hysteretic dissipation capacity deteriorates under high AFR. The analytical results also suggest that different AFR limits should be used for the design of slender and short columns due to different failure mechanisms. The ancient Algerian urban nuclei are composed of different kind of structural systems, such as unreinforced masonry building (URM) buildings, reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, steel buildings and last but not the least the reinforced masonry structures. This type of structure is one of the most vulnerable to seismic action, as they were not built to seismic codes and regulations. In this paper, a contribution for the safety assessment of reinforced masonry buildings under seismic loading is presented. With this purpose, a vulnerability index method has been applied to this type of buildings for the Algerian case according to the national seismic regulations (RPA), by identifying the most important parameters that have an influence on the seismic behaviour of such structures. Weighting factors are then assigned to each parameter in order to evaluate the vulnerability index, which allows classifying each assessed structure according to a suggested classification. The weighting factors were first estimated by a dynamic analysis using ten seismic records. As a well-known technique, alternate path method (APM) has been widely used to evaluate progressive collapse potential of structures. This method investigates the capability of structures to redistribute loads carried by a removed element in the remainder. However, in most cases the initiating event is so intensive that it destroys more than one load bearing element. If the destruction of members does not occur concurrently, dynamic removal of columns in APM could not be correctly modeled in common macromodeling frameworks. This problem has resulted in progressive collapse analysis and design guidelines to define less element removal cases than has been expected. In this paper, the method chosen for modeling successive removal of columns is capable of improving the guidelines to consider more realistic collapse scenarios. This method can be easily implemented by practicing engineers in commercial or open source programs. Moreover, a simple case study is defined to emphasize significance of the proposed method. This paper develops and presents a fully coupled nonlinear finite element (FE) procedure to treat the response of piles to ground shocks induced by underground explosions. The Arbitrary Lagrange Euler coupling formulation is used in the study with proper state material parameters and equations. Pile responses in four different soil types, viz, saturated soil, partially saturated soil, and loose and dense dry soils are investigated and the results compared. Numerical results are validated by comparing them with those from a standard design manual. Blast wave propagation in soils, horizontal pile deformations, and damages in the pile are presented. Pile damage presented through plastic strain diagrams will enable vulnerability assessment of the piles under the blast scenarios considered. The numerical results indicate that the blast performance of single pile foundations embedded in saturated soil and loose dry soil are more severe than those embedded in partially saturated soil and dense dry soil. This paper presents some recent research on the nonlinear computer simulations of reinforced concrete (RC) structures for practice, carried out at Graz University of Technology, with emphasis on the concrete material modeling and the use of numerical simulations to solve problems in practical engineering. The theoretical development and performance of a new concrete constitutive model formulated within the microplane theory framework is first introduced. A recent application of nonlinear finite element method (FEM) simulation to predict the loadcarrying capacity of a RC parapet element with low transverse reinforcement ratio is presented in details. It is shown, compared with conventional design and analysis procedures, that nonlinear FEM simulations incorporating sophisticated concrete constitutive models are able to describe more realistically the real failure and ultimate load of RC structures in engineering practice. Advanced numerical simulations using computers provide a robust tool for assessing the structural integrity of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. This paper presents an application of modern computer simulation, in the context of nonlinear finite element method (nonlinear FEM), to predict the loadbearing capacity and failure behavior of different types of RC columnslab connections strengthened by steel profiles in an existing complex industrial RC structure in Austria. Two typical connections are subjected to primary numerical investigation using nonlinear threedimensional FEM with a newly developed constitutive model for concrete. Subsequent verification tests indicate that the primary numerical analyses are quite consistent with the test observations. Postnumerical analyses of the verification tests are also carried out taking into account the measured material properties. The simulation results are in very good agreement with the test data. Based on the numerical results, the loadflow mechanisms and the load-sharing portions in the connections are identified. The ultimate loads of the rest of the connections are then determined using numerical analysis, hence no further tests are necessary. The construction of large monumental buildings such as basilicas or churches are often influenced by changes in architectural trends, by project modifications or changes in the site management, making the final result, in many cases, differ considerably from the initial project. The history of the Sagrada Familia Basilica is related to the changes during the past two centuries, which witnessed several changes in the architectural trends. One key point to understand the design and subsequent construction of the Sagrada Familia Basilica is that the architect Francesc de Paula del Villar i Lozano was replaced by Antoni Gaudí i Cornet, Villar's assistant. This event brought about a change in the project of the Basilica, as Antoni Gaudí redesigned it in 1906 according to his style. This paper presents in detail the interventions that were made at the beginning of this century to adapt the foundations designed by Francesc de Paula del Villar to withstand the loads resulting from the increased size of Gaudi's design. This project consisted of installing several micropiles to transmit the loads to the subsoil and of building several reinforced concrete pile caps fixed to the existing masonry foundations. Within this article particularities concerning the handling of material characteristics of steel-concrete composite for progressive collapse assessment are discussed. How to influence the redundancy of the global structure not only by high material strength but also by highly ductile material behaviour is highlighted. Beside the material characteristics strength and ductility further important properties under the aspect of robustness, like over-strength effects, strain rate sensitivity and absorption capacity are within the scope of the paper. For ultimate limit state and service limit state analysis under basic design conditions the proof of all relevant structural elements as separate members is state-of-the-art in most of the codes and standards and is in line with the safety concept. So, most practical engineers are only familiar with considering basic design criteria for planning. Going beyond the “normal loading conditions” additional considerations are necessary to ensure structural safety for abnormal loading and for mitigating progressive failure when local damage occurs. Therefore it is fundamental for the structural engineer to be aware of modelling the actual structural response in a correct manner. Besides the knowledge of the modelling technique itself, information about the actual material behaviour is of high importance. But in nearly all current codes only nominal material models are available. So it is hardly possible for the practical engineer to get expected material properties of the relevant material characteristic as input for progressive collapse assessment.
