PURPOSE Up to half of the children undergoing epilepsy surgery will continue to have seizures (szs) despite a cortical resection or ablation. Functional connectivity has shown promise in better identifying the epileptogenic zone. We hypothesized that cortical areas showing high information outflow during interictal epileptiform discharges are part of the epileptogenic zone. METHODS We identified 22 children with focal epilepsy who had undergone stereo electroencephalography, surgical resection or ablation, and had ≥1 year of postsurgical follow-up. The mean phase slope index, a directed measure of functional connectivity, was calculated for each electrode contact during interictal epileptiform discharges. The positive predictive value and negative predictive value for a sz-free outcome were calculated based on whether high information outflow brain regions were resected. RESULTS Resection of high outflow (z-score ≥ 1) and very high outflow (z-score ≥ 2) electrode contacts was associated with higher sz freedom (high outflow: χ2 statistic = 59.1; P < 0.001; very high outflow: χ2 statistic = 31.3; P < 0.001). The positive predictive value and negative predictive value for sz freedom based on resection at the electrode level increased at higher z-score thresholds with a peak positive predictive value of 0.86 and a peak negative predictive value of 0.9. CONCLUSIONS Better identification of the epileptogenic zone has the potential to improve epilepsy surgery outcomes. If the surgical plan can be modified to include these very high outflow areas, more children might achieve sz freedom. Conversely, if deficits from resecting these areas are unacceptable, ineffective surgeries could be avoided and alternative therapies offered.

Standardized combined Doppler-electrocardiogram assessment was performed longitudinally at three different locations of internal jugular veins between 12 wk of gestation and 6 wk postnatally in 24 uncomplicated pregnancies. All images were classified as typical or non-typical based on the presence of the physiologic deflections A, X, H and C. Linear mixed models with random intercepts of typical images were used to investigate gestational changes in venous pulse transit time and venous impedance index. Unequivocal identification of venous pulse transit time and venous impedance index was possible in 2617 of 3798 (69%) and 2234 of 3798 (59%) images, respectively. The best identification rate (80%, 1018/1266) was at the right distal internal jugular vein. Venous pulse transit time increased with gestational age at all locations; venous impedance index decreased at the right sided internal jugular vein. Maternal jugular venous pulse waveform by combined Doppler-electrocardiogram allows unequivocal identification of A-deflection and calculation of venous pulse transit time and venous impedance index in around two-thirds of assessments, with the highest success rate at the right distal internal jugular vein. Gestational evolutions of venous pulse transit time and venous impedance index are similar to those reported at the level of renal interlobar and hepatic veins.

Deep water in the South China Sea is renewed by the cold and dense Luzon Strait overflow. However, from where and how the deep water upwells is poorly understood yet. Based on the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model reanalysis data, vertical velocity is derived to answer these questions. Domain-integrated vertical velocity is of two maxima, one in the shallow water and the other at depth, and separated by a layer of minimum at the bottom of the thermocline. Further analysis shows that this two-segmented vertical transport is attributed to the vertical compensation of subsurface water to the excessive outflow of shallow water and upward push of the dense Luzon Strait overflow, respectively. In the abyssal basin, the vertical transport increases upward from zero at the depth of 3 500–4 000 m and reaches a maximum of 1.5×106 m3/s at about 1 500 m. Deep water upwells mainly from the northeastern and southwestern ends of the abyssal basin and off the continental slopes. To explain the upward velocity arising from slope breaks, a possible mechanism is proposed that an onshore velocity component can be derived from the deep western boundary current above steep slopes under bottom friction.

Water stable isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) were analyzed in samples collected in lakes, associated with riverine systems in northeastern Germany, throughout 2020. The dataset (Aichner et al., 2021; https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.935633) is derived from water samples collected at (a) lake shores (sampled in March and July 2020), (b) buoys which were temporarily installed in deep parts of the lake (sampled monthly from March to October 2020), (c) multiple spatially distributed spots in four selected lakes (in September 2020), and (d) the outflow of Müggelsee (sampled biweekly from March 2020 to January 2021). At shores, water was sampled with a pipette from 40–60 cm below the water surface and directly transferred into a measurement vial, while at buoys a Limnos water sampler was used to obtain samples from 1 m below the surface. Isotope analysis was conducted at IGB Berlin, using a Picarro L2130-i cavity ring-down spectrometer, with a measurement uncertainty of (δ18O) and (δ2H). The data give information about the vegetation period and the full seasonal isotope amplitude in the sampled lakes and about spatial isotope variability in different branches of the associated riverine systems.

Thermal power plants are generally constructed near to sea coast to meet their requirement of cooling water. The warm water discharge from the thermal power plant is one of the major environmental concerns in view of the thermal pollution in the sea water. The temperature limit for the warm water discharge from the thermal power plant has to be monitored and controlled. Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL) operates (24 × 7) at an “once-through system” based sea water circulation for power generation. The used sea water is then discharged into the sea through an outlet channel. As per environmental norms, the discharge water temperature needs to be maintained below the stipulated “delta” rise (+7 °C) with respect to ambient sea surface temperature at the inlet. We demonstrate the applicability of thermal remote sensing data in understanding the seasonal and temporal variations of the temperature difference between the discharge water and the ambient sea water. We used thermal band data from Landsat-8 satellite imagery to map water surface temperature and create temperature profiles along the intake and outflow channels (till the sea), to understand the variation of temperature and estimate the “ΔT” between intake point and various observation points along the outflow. This analysis was carried out for all 11 months (except June) of the year 2018 to correlate temperature variations with seasonal changes. Tidal conditions during the time of data acquisition were also considered to account for the effect of tides on ΔT. The result shows that the average temperature rise between intake and outflow are maintained at ∼3 °C across all the months of 2018, with minor variations in the months of July and August. Further, average temperature drop from outflow to cooling channel (before diaphragm) is seen to be ∼2 °C across all the months with similar seasonal fluctuations.

Several techniques have been proposed to observe long-term land surface deformation using phase information of synthetic aperture radar (SAR), for example, InSAR, DInSAR, PS-InSAR, SBAS using images of JERS-1, ALOS-1/2, ENVISAT, ERS-1/2, RADARSAT-1/2, TerraSAR-X, SENTINEL-1A/B, etc. These methods have been also employed to investigate land deformation and the impact caused by the hot mudflow accident at the study area of Regency of Sidoarjo, East Java province, Indonesia, where this disaster happened on 29 May 2006 and has been flowing until now. But these methods only derived the land surface deformation and did not figure geological situation in the Earth, especially the current of geological material outflow. Therefore, this research proposed the continuity equation of the law of conservation of material to estimate the current of material outflow to investigate the impact of the land surface disaster in the study area. The information of vertical deformation or subsidence is derived by the consecutive DInSAR using multi-spaceborne SAR and substituted into the proposed equation to estimate the volume and current of hot mud outflow. The differential GPS data collected since 2006 was employed to validate the analysis result of land surface deformation, and the RMS error is 0.46 m. The result obtained the current at the center of the study area at the beginning of the mudflow period was 6,800 m3/day and decreased from 2018 until now that matched well with the local reports. The proposed equation also could be applied for observation of land deformation, volcano, fault activity, underground water, etc using remote sensing technologies.

Ocean microplastic concentrations are known to vary significantly by location, with especially high levels in the North Atlantic and North Pacific gyres. Most direct measurements come from plankton net trawling made in these regions; concentrations in other regions have been estimated by microplastic transport models that depend on large-scale ocean circulation patterns. However, global measurements of microplastic distribution and its temporal variability are lacking. A new method is presented for detecting and imaging the global distribution of ocean microplastics from space. The method uses spaceborne bistatic radar measurements of ocean surface roughness and relies on an assumed reduction in responsiveness to wind-driven roughening caused by surfactants that act as tracers for microplastics near the surface. Annual mean microplastic distributions estimated by the radars are generally consistent with model predictions. The spaceborne observations are also able to detect temporal changes that are not resolved by the models. For example, seasonal dependencies are observed at mid-latitudes in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with lower concentrations noted in the winter months. Time lapse images at finer spatial and temporal scales reveal episodic bursts of microplastic tracers in the outflow from major river discharges into the sea. This new method will provide better monitoring of ocean microplastics and will support future model development and validation.

A new method to analyze the potential for rapid intensity change in tropical cyclones is presented. The method is based on satellite observations of precipitation derived from microwave radiometers. The approach is intended to condense the information in the environment and in the vortex using a low wave number representation of the Rain Index (RaIn, a multi-channel non-linear combination of passive microwave observations), and train a deep-learning, multilayer neural network (NN) with the RaIn and the changes in the wind over the next 24 hours. The resulting NN exhibits a near-perfect ability to identify Rapid Intensification (RI: changes in the hurricane wind speed in excess of 30 knots within a 24 hour period). It is found that the spatial structure and amounts of the columnar water condensate within the extended environment is necessary to capture the most important information regarding the rapid intensification process. Analyses of the NN structure provide new insights into the physics of tropical cyclones and can help improve model forecasting. Environmental conditions as far as 1050 km from the TC center might affect the process of Rapid Intensification by at least three physical processes: absolute angular momentum inflow, wind shear stabilization, and steering the outflow jets in the upper troposphere. The findings can be used to build a Rapid Intensification Discriminant (RID) for real-time operations.

Vertical wind profiles of selected tropical cyclones over the South China Sea are studied for the first time using dropsonde measurements by a fixed-wing aircraft of the Hong Kong Government. They are studied in a number of aspects which have not been conducted before for storms over the South China Sea. First the strengthening and weakening of the tropical cyclones are analyzed based on the radial wind profiles, namely, inflow and outflow, particularly over the atmospheric boundary layer. Second, the vertical wind profiles are fitted using the commonly considered wind profile models reported in the literature. This would have significant contributions to wind engineering applications in the region. Finally, the performance of a mesoscale meteorological data in the analysis and nowcast of the vertical profiles of tropical cyclones are studied (the model has not assimilated the dropsonde data in the analysis). The results are unique for tropical cyclones over South China Sea and would serve as useful reference for the studies of tropical cyclones in this ocean basin.

Thermal water discharge within the gravity-driven groundwater flow system in the Alps and other similar areas around the world may be hidden in Quaternary deposits which, in these regions, often cover the regional aquifer. When thermal water drains into Quaternary deposits, the mixing of the deep thermal component and the cold shallow groundwater forms a thermal plume that extends parallel to the main groundwater flow in shallow system. In the Bled case study in Slovenia, the thermal water discharges from carbonate rocks into Quaternary glaciofluvial sediments, and as the Toplice spring at a rate of 5 l/s at an average temperature of 21.5 °C. Knowing the spatial extent and intensity of thermal outflow is essential to decision making related to the development and protection of this renewable resource. By approximating the thermal water outflow from a discharge zone as a planar source, a planar advective heat transport model can be used to evaluate its geometry and quantify rates. An analytical procedure follows rough assumptions leading to conservative results. Moreover, a numerical model using the FEFLOW code was applied for comparison with the simulations of the analytical model. The heat transport model was based on measured hydraulic parameters (e.g. groundwater levels) and borehole temperatures as well as on-site and international literature (e.g. dispersivity, thermal conductivity). Nine scenarios were applied accounting for different dimensions of the heat source and compared to the results of numerical simulations. Each scenario was verified by calculating the relative error between the analytical models and the measured borehole temperatures. The results confirm that the main outflow of thermal water can be determined using planar geometry, and is 200–300 m wide. The height of the thermal outflow zone is approximately 25 m, corresponding to the expected thickness of the direct contact between the fractured dolomite and the shallower Quaternary aquifer. Using the proposed widths and depths, the hidden natural thermal outflow rates are estimated at 57–86 l/s.

The implication of outflow structure for tropical cyclone (TC) rapid intensification (RI) is investigated via a climatological study using the best track, reanalysis, and infrared brightness temperature data during 1980–2019. Composite analyses are performed in a shear-relative framework for the RI events under different strengths of environmental shear. Results show that for the RI events under moderate (4.5–11 m s−1) or strong (>11 m s−1) environmental shear the RI onset follows a significant increase of upper-level outflow upshear of the storm, which is intimately linked with the increasing active convection upshear. The intensified outflow blocks the upper-level environmental flow and thus decreases the local shear, building an environment favorable for RI. In contrast, the RI under weak environmental shear (−1) is found to be less attributed to this outflow-blocking mechanism. Comparison between the RI and non-RI cases under moderate or strong environmental shear reveals that the RI cases tend to have stronger outflow and convection in the upshear flank than the non-RI cases, confirming the importance of outflow blocking on the occurrence of RI. Statistical analysis further indicates that the 24-h future intensity change under moderate or strong shear is more negatively correlated with the local shear than with the environmental shear, implicating the potential of local shear and upshear outflow as predictors to improve the forecasting of TC intensity change and especially RI. Further analysis suggests that the environmental thermodynamic conditions may play an important role in modulating the upshear convection and thus outflow blocking.

The main aim of the research presented in the work was to assess the usefulness of the dynamic SWMM (stormwater management model) and the conceptual SBUH (Santa Barbara Urban Hydrograph) model for simulating and predicting flow hydrographs in a small urbanized catchment under conditions of controlled (using valves) outflow from stormwater retention tanks in response to rainfall events. Most of the analyzed catchment of the Służewiecki Stream consists of the area beneath F. Chopin International Airport in Warsaw. A further aim of the study was the development of method for indicating the concentration time for a given rainfall–runoff event, where the influence of delaying the outflow of stormwater from the catchment as a result of its retention in tanks on the value of this parameter will be accounted for. The values of the median of absolute errors, obtained in a simulation using the SWMM in relation to peak flows and hydrograph volumes for the analyzed events, were 15.4 and 18.4%, respectively. The adequate values of simulation errors, obtained in the SBUH model using concentration times determined according to the developed method, were 11.4 and 15.4%. Satisfactory results of simulations were received using both models. The cross-shelf exchange between the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) with the Kuroshio is important for vorticity, freshwater, and effluence balances of the regional and global oceans, the responses of which to future climate changes are estimated based on Max-Planck coupled model simulations under one historical (20C, 1970–2005) and two representative concentration pathway scenarios of global warming (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) from 2006 to 2099. The results of the 20C simulation have shown prominent cross-shelf transports in the YECS, with annual mean outflow (OVT) and inflow (IVT) volume transports across the 100 m isobath of 3.97 Sv and 2.86 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s−1), respectively. These annual mean OVTs (and their equivalent IVTs) are projected to increase by 0.42 Sv and 0.48 Sv from 2006 to 2099, at rates of 11.0% and 12.8% from the 2006–2016 means, under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. The maximum rates of increase are found in winter to be at 13.2% and 19.9%, respectively. Analyses suggest that the winter monsoon has a long-term southwesterly change, forcing coastal currents to flow into the Yellow Sea along the China coasts to compensate for the increase of the southeastward surface Ekman transport. Due to increases of the Tsushima Strait and upper-layer Kuroshio transports, both the OVT and IVT across the 200 m isobath have onshore changes, resulting in net onshore transport increments of 0.30 Sv and 0.57 Sv under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. The enhanced cross-shelf exchanges under future warming scenarios in the YECS suggest their potential importance in carbon transportation and storage.

Condition indices are key predictors of health and fitness in wild fish populations. Variation in body condition, therefore, can be used to identify stressful conditions that may impact endangered species, such as California’s endemic Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus McAllister, 1963). Here, we examined spatiotemporal variation in the condition indices of > 1600 Delta Smelt collected over nine years (2011–2019), a period characterized by tremendous variability in hydrodynamic and water quality conditions. The population exhibited low hepatosomatic index (HSI) and condition factor (CF) during September/October/November (fall), and both condition indices declined over the nine-year study during fall. HSI was positively correlated with indicators of pelagic productivity (e.g., Chlorophyll a, zooplankton biomass, and proximity to tidal wetlands), whereas CF was negatively correlated with temperature, peaking at a relatively cool 10–13°C. In sum, seasonal and interannual variation in body condition corresponded most strongly with pelagic productivity and water temperature, with little correlation to freshwater outflow. Management actions that increase pelagic productivity, restore and freshen productive wetlands during late summer-fall, and reduce water temperatures overall are likely to benefit condition indices and, therefore, fitness of the Delta Smelt population.

Despite their large impact on stellar and galactic evolution, the properties of outflows from red supergiants are not well characterised. We used the Onsala 20m telescope to perform a spectral survey at 3mm and 4mm (68 - 116 GHz) of the red supergiant NML Cyg, alongside the yellow hypergiant IRC+10420. Our observations of NML Cyg were combined with complementary archival data to enable a search for signatures of morphological complexity in the circumstellar environment, using emission lines from 15 molecular species. The recovered parameters imply the presence of three distinct, coherent and persistent components, comprised of blue-shifted and red-shifted components, in addition to an underlying outflow centred at the stellar systemic velocity. Furthermore, to reproduce CO emission with three-dimensional radiative transfer models required a spherical outflow with three superposed conical outflows, one towards and one away from the observer, and one in the plane of the sky. These components are higher in density than the spherical outflow by up to an order of magnitude. We hence propose that NML Cyg's circumstellar environment consists of a small number of high-density large-scale coherent outflows embedded in a spherical wind. This would make the mass-loss history similar to that of VY CMa, and distinct from mu Cep, where the outflow contains many randomly distributed smaller clumps. Nitro-phenolic compounds (NPs) have attracted increasing attention because of their health risks and impacts on visibility, climate, and atmospheric chemistry. Despite many measurements of particulate NPs, the knowledge of their gaseous abundances, sources, atmospheric fates, and impacts remains incomplete. Here, 18 gaseous NPs were continuously measured with a time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer at a background site in South China in autumn and winter. Abundant NPs were observed in the continental outflows from East Asia, with a total concentration up to 122.1 pptv. Secondary formation from the transported aromatics dominated the observed NPs, with mono-NPs exhibiting photochemical daytime peaks and nighttime enrichments of di-NPs and Cl-substituted NPs. The budget analysis indicates that besides the •OH oxidation of aromatics, the NO3• oxidation also contributed significantly to the daytime mono-NPs, while the further oxidation of mono-NPs by NO3• dominated the nocturnal formation of di-NPs. Photolysis was the main daytime sink of NPs and produced substantial HONO, which would influence atmospheric oxidation capacity in downwind and background regions. This study provides quantitative insights on the formation and impacts of gaseous NPs in the continental outflow and highlights the role of NO3• chemistry in the secondary nitro-aromatics production that may facilitate regional pollution.

The photospheric emission in the prompt phase is the natural prediction of the original fireball model for gamma-ray burst (GRB) due to the large optical depth ($\tau >1$) at the base of the outflow, which is supported by the quasi-thermal components detected in several Fermi GRBs. However, which radiation mechanism (photosphere or synchrotron) dominates in most GRB spectra is still under hot debate. The shape of the observed photosphere spectrum from a pure hot fireball or a pure Poynting-flux-dominated outflow has been investigated before. In this work, we further study the photosphere spectrum from a hybrid outflow containing both a thermal component and a magnetic component with moderate magnetization ($\sigma_{0}=L_{P}/L_{\text{Th}}\sim 1-10$), by invoking the probability photosphere model. The high-energy spectrum from such a hybrid outflow is a power law rather than an exponential cutoff, which is compatible with the observed Band function in large amounts of GRBs. Also, the distribution of the low-energy indices (corresponding to the peak-flux spectra) is found to be quite consistent with the statistical result for the peak-flux spectra of GRBs best-fitted by the Band function, with similar angular profiles of structured jet in our previous works. Finally, the observed distribution of the high-energy indices can be well understood after considering the different magnetic acceleration (due to magnetic reconnection and kink instability) and the angular profiles of dimensionless entropy with the narrower core., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, published in MNRAS

A late (t $\sim$ 1,500 days) multi-wavelength (UV, optical, IR, and X-ray) flare was found in PS1-10adi, a tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate that took place in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). TDEs usually involve super-Eddington accretion, which drives fast mass outflow (disk wind). So here we explore a possible scenario that such a flare might be produced by the interaction of the disk wind with a dusty torus for TDEs in AGN. Due to the high velocity of the disk wind, strong shocks will emerge and convert the bulk of the kinetic energy of the disk wind to radiation. We calculate the dynamics and then predict the associated radiation signatures, taking into account the widths of the wind and torus. We compare our model with the bolometric light curve of the late flare in PS1-10adi constructed from observations. We find from our modeling that the disk wind has a total kinetic energy of about $10^{51}$ erg and a velocity of 0.1 c (i.e., a mass of 0.3 $M_{\odot}$); the gas number density of the clouds in the torus is $3\times 10^{7}$ $\rm cm^{-3}$. Observation of such a late flare can be an evidence of the disk wind in TDEs and can be used as a tool to explore the nuclear environment of the host., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Accurate prediction of a breached dam's peak outflow is a significant factor for flood risk analysis. In this study, the capability of Support Vector Machine and Kernel Extreme Learning Machine as kernel-based approaches and Gene Expression Programming method was assessed in breached dam peak outflow prediction. Two types of modeling were considered. First, only dam reservoir height and volume at the failure time were used as the input combinations (state 1). Then, soil characteristics were added to input combinations to investigate particularly the impact of soil characteristics (state 2). Results showed that the use of only soil characteristics did not lead to a desired accuracy; however, adding soil characteristics to input combinations (state 2) improved the models' accuracy up to 40%. The outcome of the applied models was also compared with existing empirical equations and it was found the applied models yielded better results. Sensitivity analysis results showed that dam height had the most important role in the peak outflow prediction, while the strength parameters did not have significant impacts. Furthermore, for assessing the best-applied model dependability, uncertainty analysis was used and the results indicated that the SVM model had an allowable degree of uncertainty in peak outflow modelling. HIGHLIGHTS Some novelties of the present research can be summarized as follows: Applicability and accuracy of two different meta models, namely, Gene Expression Programming (GEP) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), are used to predict the peak outflow from breached embankment dams.; Two different scenarios are developed based on dam reservoir height and volume at the time of failure and soil characteristics.; Additional to the geometrical characteristics of dam, the impact of soil characteristics on modelling the peak outflow is investigated.; The outcomes of the SVM and GEP models are also compared with the existing empirical equations and it is shown that the intelligence models yield better results.

Prominent cirrus cloud banding occurred episodically within a northern cirrus canopy of Typhoon Talim (2017) during its recurvature. The generation mechanisms of the cirrus bands and low static-stability layers that support the bands are investigated using a numerical simulation with the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting Model. Inspection of model output reveals that thin layers of near-neutral to weakly unstable static stability are persistently present in the upper and lower parts of the upper-level outflow, and shallow convection aligned along the vertical shear vector is prevalent in these layers. The cirrus banding occurs as the lowered outflow from the weakening storm ascends slantwise over a midlatitude baroclinic zone, and updrafts of the preexisting shallow convection in the upper part of the outflow layer become saturated. It is shown that the strong outflow resulting from violation of gradient-wind balance in the core region, by itself, creates the low static-stability layers. Analyses of potential temperature and static stability budgets show that the low static-stability layers are created mainly by the differential radial advection of radial thermal gradients on the vertical edges of the outflow. The radial thermal gradients occur in response to the outward air parcel acceleration in the core region and deceleration in the outer region, which, by inducing compensating vertical mass transport into and out of the outflow, act to tilt the isentropes within the shear layers. The effects of environmental flow and cloud radiative forcing on the cirrus banding are also addressed.

Malignant ventricular arrhythmias arising from the pulmonary artery rarely occur in patients without structural heart disease. We highlight the feasibility and efficacy of a circular catheter-guided pulmonary artery isolation procedure for frequent premature ventricular contractions and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia causing syncope. Rotating holes are widely used in jet engine internal air systems as an important kind of throttling element. The flow characteristics of rotating holes are of great importance in the design of the internal air system. This paper aims to investigate the influence of pumping effect on the flow characteristics of axial rotating holes. Pumping effect refers to the flow phenomenon induced by a rotating plate which characterized by a radial outflow. There are altogether two types of holes considered in the paper: round hole and square hole. A 1/25 (14.4-degree) sector model is used to carry out the numerical investigation using the commercial software ANSYS CFX. In the simulation, the SST turbulent model is used. Meanwhile, a non-rotating method using the relative frame of reference is used. In the non-rotating method, an initial incidence angle is given at the inlet instead of setting the plate to be rotating, thus the pumping effect induced by the rotating plate can be eliminated. The non-rotating method results are compared with the conventional reference frame results to investigate the influence of pumping effect. The results show that due to the influence of the pumping effect-induced radial outflow, the theoretical two-dimensional incidence angle becomes three-dimensional, which has negative effects on the hole discharge coefficient. At the same time, due to a larger circumferential length, square holes will undermine the pumping effect, thus has a higher discharge coefficient than the round holes.

Dispersion and natural ventilation of hydrogen leaked at the floor center of a confined space are analytically and numerically studied in this contribution. Two symmetrical openings located atop two opposite walls and several sets of partition boards with varying heights, 0–1.0 m with 0.2 m increment, mounted under the ceiling were designed to examine their effects on ventilation efficiency. Without partition boards, a semi-analytical model combining a modified buoyancy ceiling jet theory and zone model was established to predict the key parameters at steady stage. The analytical predictions were compared with numerical results. 15 monitors were predesigned at an opening and the channels separated by the partition boards to collect the velocity and hydrogen concentration evolutions. The results show that the existence of the partition boards significantly promotes the ventilation efficiency by decreasing the hydrogen concentration in the confined space, constraining the flammable regime into a smaller volume, and increasing both the inflow and outflow velocities. Better ventilation efficiency is achieved by higher partition boards until a critical height after which no appreciable improvement can be gained. Applying the partition boards considerably shortens the developing stage of the dispersion process and intensifies the turbulence of outflow. Conclusions obtained in current work may benefit the natural ventilation system and building structure design for hydrogen safety in practical applications.

Water temperature in glacial lakes affects underwater melting and calving of glaciers terminating in lakes. Despite its importance, seasonal lake temperature variations are poorly understood because taking long-term measurements near the front of calving glaciers is challenging. To investigate the thermal structure and its seasonal variations, we performed year-around temperature and current measurement at depths of 58–392 m in Lago Grey, a 410-m-deep glacial lake in Patagonia. The measurement revealed critical impacts of subglacial discharge on the lake thermal condition. Water below a depth of ~100 m showed the coldest temperature in mid-summer, under the influence of glacial discharge, whereas temperature in the upper layer followed a seasonal variation of air temperature. The boundary of the lower and upper layers was controlled by the depth of a sill which blocks outflow of dense and cold glacial meltwater. Our data implies that subglacial discharge and bathymetry dictate mass loss and the retreat of lake-terminating glaciers. The cold lakewater hinders underwater melting and facilitates formation of a floating terminus., Thermal conditions and circulation near glacier fronts are important to understand the recent rapid retreat of calving glaciers. New observations from a glacial lake suggesting a feedback mechanism between atmospheric warming, glacier front melting and calving for freshwater-terminating glaciers.

Objective Aortic incompetence (AI) is observed to be accelerated in the continuous-flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) population and is related to increased mortality. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), we investigated the hemodynamic conditions related to the orientation of the LVAD outflow in these patients. Method We identified 10 patients with new aortic regurgitation, and 20 who did not, after LVAD implantation between 2009 and 2018. Three-dimensional models of patients' aortas were created from their computed tomography scans. The geometry of the LVAD outflow graft in relation to the aorta was quantified using azimuth angles (AA), polar angles (PAs), and distance from aortic root. The models were used to run CFD simulations, which calculated the pressures and wall shear stress (rWSS) exerted on the aortic root. Results The AA and PA were found to be similar. However, for combinations of high values of AA and low values of PA, there were no patients with AI. The distance from aortic root to the outflow graft was also smaller in patients who developed AI (3.39 ± 0.7 vs 4.07 ± 0.77 cm, P = .04). There was no significant difference in aortic root pressures in the 2 groups. The rWSS was greater in AI patients (4.60 ± 5.70 vs 2.37 ± 1.20 dyne/cm2, P Conclusions Using CFD simulations, we demonstrated that patients who developed de novo AI have greater rWSS at the aortic root, and their outflow grafts were placed closer to the aortic roots than those patients without de novo AI.

Background Electrocardiographic (ECG) criteria have been proposed to localize the site of origin of outflow region ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). Many factors influence the QRS morphology of VAs and may limit the accuracy of these criteria. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of ECG criteria that differentiate right from left outflow region VAs and localize VAs within the aortic sinus of Valsalva (ASV). Methods One hundred one patients (mean age 52 ± 16 years; 55 [54%] women) undergoing catheter ablation of right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) or ASV VAs with a left bundle branch block, inferior axis morphology were studied. ECG measurements including V2 transition ratio, transition zone index, R-wave duration index, R/S amplitude index, V2S/V3R index, V1–3 QRS morphology, R-wave amplitude in the inferior leads were tabulated for all VAs. Comparisons were made between the predicted site of origin using these criteria and the successful ablation site. Results Patients had successful ablation of 71 RVOT and 38 ASV VAs. For the differentiation of RVOT from ASV VAs, the positive predictive values and negative predictive values for all tested ECG criteria ranged from 42% to 75% and from 71% to 82%, respectively, with the V2S/V3R index having the largest area under the curve of 0.852. Morphological QRS criteria in leads V1 through V3 did not localize ASV VAs. The maximum R-wave amplitude in the inferior leads was the sole criterion demonstrating a significant difference between right ASV, right-left ASV commissure, and left ASV sites. Conclusion ECG criteria for differentiating right from left ventricular outflow region VAs and for localizing ASV VAs have a limited accuracy.

Компанія, яка впроваджує аналіз даних і моделювання для розробки моделей прогнозування відтоку клієнтів, має можливість покращити управління відтоком клієнтів і підвищити результати бізнесу. Метою дослідження є застосування моделей машинного навчання для телекомунікаційної компанії, зокрема побудова моделей для прогнозування відтоку користувачів і доведення того, що моделі Data Science і машинне навчання є якісними та ефективними інструментами для вирішення завдань прогнозування ключових маркетингових показників телекомунікаційної компанії. На прикладі Telco у статті представлено результати різних моделей класифікації, таких як логістична регресія, Random Forest, SVM та XGBoost з використанням мови програмування Python. Всі моделі мають високий рівень якості (загальна точність більше 80%). Таким чином, дослідження доводить можливість та доцільність використання моделей у подальшій класифікації клієнтів для прогнозування відтоку абонентів (тих клієнтів, які можуть відмовитися від послуг компанії) та мінімізації відтоку споживачів на основі цього. Виявлено ключові фактори, що впливають на відтік клієнтів, і вони створюють основу для майбутнього прогнозу відтоку. Впровадження моделей прогнозування відтоку абонентів допоможе зменшити його і зберегти їх лояльність. Результати дослідження можуть бути використані для оптимізації маркетингової діяльності з управління відтоком споживачів компаній ринку телекомунікацій шляхом прийняття ефективних рішень на основі даних та для вдосконалення математичної методології прогнозування відтоку клієнтів. The telecommunication company functioned in the market with extremely high competitiveness. Attracting new customers needs 5-10 times more expenses than maintaining an existing one. As a result, effective customer churn management and analysis of the reasons for customer churn are vital tasks for telecommunication operators. As a result, predicting subscriber churn by switching on the competitors becomes very important. Data Science and machine learning create enormous opportunities for solving this task to evaluate customer satisfaction with company services, determine factors that cause disappointment, and forecast which clients are at a greater risk of abandoning and changing services suppliers. A company that implements data analysis and modelling to develop customer churn prediction models has an opportunity to improve customer churn management and increase business results. The purposes of the research are the application of machine learning models for a telecommunications company, in particular, the construction of models for predicting the user churn rate and proving that Data Science models and machine learning are high-quality and effective tools for solving the tasks of forecasting the key marketing metrics of a telecommunications company. Based on the example of Telco, the article contains the results of the implementation of various models for classification, such as logistic regression, Random Forest, SVM, and XGBoost, using Python programming language. All models are characterised by high quality (the general accuracy is over 80%). So, the paper demonstrates the feasibility and possibility of implementing the model to classify customers in the future to anticipate subscriber churn (clients who may abandon the company's services) and minimise consumer outflow based on this. The main factors influencing customer churn are established, which is basic information for further forecasting client outflow. Customer outflow prediction models implementation will help to reduce customer churn and maintain their loyalty. The research results can be useful for optimising marketing activity of managing the outflow of consumers of companies on the telecommunication market by developing effective decisions based on data and improving the mathematical methodology of forecasting the outflow of consumers. Therefore, the study's main theoretical and practical achievements are to develop an efficient forecasting tool for enterprises to control outflow risks and to enrich the research on data analysis and Data Science methodology to identify essential factors that determine the propensity of customers to churn.

(Abridged) Physical processes such as accretion shocks are thought to be common in the protostellar phase, where the envelope component is still present, and they can release molecules from the dust to the gas phase, altering the original chemical composition of the disk. Consequently, the study of accretion shocks is essential for a better understanding of the physical processes at disk scales and their chemical output. The purpose of this work is to assess the characteristics of accretion shocks traced by sulfur-related species. We present ALMA high angular resolution observations (0.1") of the Class I protostar Oph-IRS 44. The continuum emission at 0.87 mm is observed, together with sulfur-related species such as SO, SO$_{2}$, and $^{34}$SO$_{2}$. Six lines of SO$_{2}$, two lines of $^{34}$SO$_{2}$, and one line of SO are detected toward IRS 44. The emission of all the detected lines peaks at ~0.1" (~14 au) from the continuum peak and we find infalling-rotating motions inside 30 au. However, only redshifted emission is seen between 50 and 30 au. Colder and more quiescent material is seen toward an offset region located at a distance of ~400 au from the protostar, and we do not find evidence of a Keplerian profile in these data. Accretion shocks are the most plausible explanation for the high temperatures, high densities, and velocities found for the SO$_{2}$ emission. When material enters the disk--envelope system, it generates accretion shocks that increase the dust temperature and desorb SO$_{2}$ molecules from dust grains. High-energy SO$_{2}$ transitions (~200 K) seem to be the best tracers of accretion shocks that can be followed up by future higher angular resolution ALMA observations and compared to other species to assess their importance in releasing molecules from the dust to the gas phase., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

The Ross-Konno operation is effective for enlargement of a hypoplastic aortic annulus and left ventricular outflow tract. It is, however, an invasive operation with the potential for early and late cardiac morbidity. We propose a new technique of annular and outflow tract enlargement which avoids the septal incision while effectively opening up the outflow tract and aortic annulus.

Kinematics of the molecular clouds in the star forming complex M17 is studied using the high-resolution CO-line mapping data at resolution ($20" \sim 0.2$ pc) with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The northern molecular cloud of M17, which we call the molecular "lobe", is shown to have an elongated shell structure around a top-covered cylindrical cavity. The lobe is expanding at $\sim 5$ \kms in the minor axis direction, and at $ \sim 3/\cos \ i$ km s$^{-1}$ in the major axis direction, where $i$ is the inclination of the major axis. The kinetic energy of the expanding motion is on the order of $\sim 3\times 10^{49}$ ergs. We show that the lobe is a backyard structure having the common origin to the denser molecular "horn" flowing out from NGC 6618 toward the south, so that the lobe and horn compose a bipolar outflow. Intensity distributions across the lobe and horn show a double-peak profile typical for a cylinder around a cavity. Position-velocity diagrams (PVD) across the lobe and horn exhibit open ring structure with the higher- and/or lower-velocity side(s) being lacking or faded. This particular PVD behavior can be attributed to outflow in a conical cylinder with the flow velocity increasing toward the lobe and horn axes., Comment: Accepted for MNRAS, 10 pages, 13 figures

As a typhoon approaches the continent, the position where anthropogenic aerosols penetrate, the convection competition between the eyewall and peripheral rainbands, and the separate contributions of direct aerosol-radiation interactions (ARI) and indirect aerosol-cloud interactions (ACI), yield uncertainties in the convection intensification area and hence the typhoon intensity. Typhoon Lupit (2009) was simulated using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) to investigate and isolate the direct and indirect effects of aerosols on the intensity, convection, and precipitation of the typhoon. Three simulations (CTL, CLEAN, and CTLARIOFF) were designed, representing a polluted case (CTL, considering the ingestion of anthropogenic aerosols with ARI and ACI), a clean maritime case (CLEAN, mainly with sea salt aerosols), and a polluted case without aerosol radiative forcing (CTLARIOFF, as per CTL but without ARI) The results showed that anthropogenic aerosols could penetrate into both the peripheral rainbands and the eyewall when the typhoon was approaching the Asian continent Owing to the representation of the real aerosol scenario, the simulated typhoon intensity weakened and was closer to observed values in the CTL experiment. The ARI dominated over ACI with the opposite effects. Specifically, the ACI mainly enhanced the formation of ice-phase hydrometeors within the upper level of the eyewall with more freezing latent heat releases, leading to an invigoration of eyewall convection. These excess ice-phase particles melted after they descended into the warm layer below the 0°C level, which accelerated the accretion of cloud droplets by raindrops (Pcacr) and hence the mixed phase precipitation process in the eyewall. The dynamic feedback induced by the ACI enhanced the boundary layer inflow and the upper layer outflow, supporting the maintenance of strong eyewall convection and intensification of the typhoon. Inversely, the ARI heated the distant periphery low-level atmosphere at an altitude of 1–2 km by the absorbing polluted aerosols. The heated air, driven by the radial inflow, firstly went through the periphery rainbands of the typhoon and invigorated convection there due to the low-level warming. Then, the enhanced periphery convection inhibited the further transport of warm moist air into the eyewall, resulting in weakening of the eyewall convection and hence typhoon intensity. In sum, for the polluted scenario, as the typhoon approached the continent, ARI played a dominant role over ACI. The WRF-Chem model with full consideration of aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions is advantageous in terms of reliably simulating typhoon intensity and precipitation distribution.

Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been detected in the high-quality X-ray spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with fairly high accretion rates and are thought to significantly contribute to the AGN feedback. After a decade of dedicated study, their launching mechanisms and structure are still not well understood, but variability techniques may provide useful constraints. In this work, therefore, we perform a flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on a highly accreting and variable NLS1 AGN, 1H 0707-495, using all archival XMM-Newton observations to study the structure of the UFO. We find that the wind spectral lines weaken at higher luminosities, most likely due to an increasing ionization parameter as previously found in a few similar sources. Instead, the velocity is anticorrelated with the luminosity, which is opposite to the trend observed in the NLS1 IRAS 13224-3809. Furthermore, the detection of the emission lines, which are not observed in IRAS 13224-3809, indicates a wind with a larger opening angle in 1H 0707-495, presumably due to a higher accretion rate. The emitting gas is found to remain broadly constant with the luminosity. We describe the variability of the wind with a scenario where the strong radiation extends the launch radius outwards and shields the outer emitting gas, similarly to super-Eddington compact objects, although other possible explanations are discussed. Blood cysts are rare cardiac tumors, often involve the atrioventricular valves. Blood cysts are usually small and tend to be clinically silent. Here, we report a case of blood cyst adhered to the junction of the pulmonary valve and the right ventricular outflow, causing severe outflow obstruction. This case was initially misdiagnosed as pulmonary valve stenosis by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and even underwent percutaneous balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty (PBPV). As the right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery peak gradient did not decrease after PBPV procedure, the boy underwent TTE again and the diagnosis was corrected as blood cyst. The cystic mass was successfully resected subsequently, and the boy recovered well.

Reservoir routing is a technique to predict an outflow hydrograph expected from a dam outlet due to a specific inflow hydrograph. This study develops a series of analytical solutions for determining outflow hydrographs with detailed calculation procedures when a triangular, abrupt wave, flood pulse, broad peak, and double-peak inflow hydrographs occur upstream of a typical reservoir with an orifice outlet. The proposed analytical solutions are used as benchmarks to evaluate 16 schemes of a conventional numerical method so-called Runge–Kutta method, and the main equations for sensitivity analyses. The results indicate that the best scheme among those 16 Runge–Kutta schemes is the Kutta–Merson scheme for all types of inflow hydrographs except the double-peak inflow hydrograph in which the Cash–Karp method outperforms others, and the peak of the inflow hydrograph and the water area supplied by the reservoir are the two most sensitive parameters influencing outflow hydrographs results.

Relevance. One of the conditions for the functional outflow pathways' formation after filtering glaucoma surgeries is the uniform moisture absorption from the filtering blebs, which is provided by the blood and, possibly, lymphatic vessels of the conjunctiva. Purpose. To conduct a structural and molecular assessment of filtering blebs in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) after non-penetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS) according to OCT data, as well as ultrastructural and immunohistochemical studies. Material and methods. A clinical study of 12 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) after NPDS was conducted. In the long-term postoperative period (12–18 months), the level of intraocular pressure (IOP) was determined, the structure of the filtering blebs using biomicroscopy and OCT of the anterior segment of the eye was evaluated, the immunohistochemical study of the filtering blebs' tissue for the expression of podoplanin and ultrastructural analysis of the samples obtained using a laser confocal microscope LSM 710 (Zeiss) was performed. In 8 cases (group 1), these were non-functional scarred filtering blebs, IOP 24.12± 2.24 mm Hg, in 4 cases (group 2) – functional filtering blebs, IOP 15.31± 4.08 mm Hg. Results. During the immunohistochemical examination of the first group patients' conjunctival samples, no vessels with characteristics of the lymphatic system were detected in any case. In each sample of the second group patients' filtering blebs, from 5 to 7 vessels with different variants of podoplanin expression were determined. Conclusion. The aqueous outflow entering the subconjunctival space through the newly created outflow pathway during glaucoma surgery is carried out at the expense of conjunctival lymphatic structures, the condition of which to a certain extent determines the success or failure of the surgery. An electric virtual impactor with a capability of sampling fine and ultrafine particles was developed and its performance was evaluated both numerically and experimentally. The electric virtual impactor was provided with metallic electrodes, to which electric voltage in the range of 75–9000 V was applied for creating an electric field within the virtual impactor. Particle electric mobility was utilized to sample ultrafine particles at the major outflow section, while particle inertia was employed to collect fine particles at the minor outflow section. Silver nanoparticles with known charge level and Arizona test dust were used to experimentally validate the performance of the electric virtual impactor. Numerical and experimental outcomes agreed well with each other. The upper cutoff size of the electric virtual impactor was fixed at about 2.6 μm, while the lower cutoff size varied from 7 nm to 110 nm depending on the applied electric voltage. As a result, the proposed electric virtual impactor was able to sample both fine and ultrafine particles of a desired particle size range.

The paper deals with the long-term and seasonal variability of low flows using the example of a mountain river. The study covers the Laborec River in the eastern part of Slovakia, and the main aim of the research is to identify and establish long-term fluctuations of low flows on this river. The analysis aims to indicate trends of low flows and seasonal variability of outflows based on various measures and research methods as well as the links between them. Basic data on daily flow and precipitation series were collected from 1980 to 2019. Low flow periods were identified in relation to the fitting of the threshold level method to the 70th and 95th percentile on the flow duration curve as a constant, multi-annual cut-off (Q70%, Q95%). The longest lasting flows were those below q70%, which were determined in the shallow cut-offs that occurred for most of the year, i.e. from June to December and in January. The greatest culmination of flows below q95% was in August and September. The range of minimal unit outflow is the smallest in the summer-autumn period and results from long periods without precipitation and with increased evapotranspiration. The highest range of unit outflow was recorded from December to April. Knowledge of low river flows should be one of the important elements of advanced planning, which in the future may help to reduce conflicts between water users during the peak demand period.

Knowledge of the variability of the hydrograph of outflow from urban catchments is highly important for measurements and evaluation of the operation of sewer networks. Currently, hydrodynamic models are most frequently used for hydrograph modeling. Since a large number of their parameters have to be identified, there may be problems at the calibration stage. Hence, sensitivity analysis is used to limit the number of parameters. However, the current sensitivity analytical methods ignore the effect of the temporal distribution and intensity of precipitation in a rainfall event on the catchment outflow hydrograph. This article presents a methodology of constructing a simulator of catchment outflow hydrograph parameters (volume and maximum flow). For this purpose, uncertainty analytical results obtained with the use of the GLUE (generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation) method were used. A novel analysis of the sensitivity of the hydrodynamic catchment models was also developed, which can be used in the analysis of the operation of stormwater networks and underground infrastructure facilities. Using the logistic regression method, an innovative sensitivity coefficient was proposed to study the impact of the variability of the parameters of the hydrodynamic model depending on the distribution of rainfall, the origin of rainfall (on the Chomicz scale), and the uncertainty of the estimated simulator coefficients on the parameters of the outflow hydrograph. The developed model enables the analysis of the impact of the identified SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) parameters on the runoff hydrograph, taking into account local rainfall conditions, which have not been analyzed thus far. Compared with the currently developed methods, the analyses included the impact of the uncertainty of the identified coefficients in the logistic regression model on the results of the sensitivity coefficient calculation. This aspect has not been taken into account in the sensitivity analytical methods thus far, although this approach evaluates the reliability of the simulation results. The results indicated a considerable influence of rainfall distribution and intensity on the sensitivity factors. The greater the intensity and rainfall were, the lower the impact of the identified hydrodynamic model parameters on the hydrograph parameters. Additionally, the calculations confirmed the significant impact of the uncertainty of the estimated coefficient in the simulator on the sensitivity coefficients. In the context of the sensitivity analysis, the obtained results have a significant effect on the interpretation of the relationships obtained. The approach presented in this study can be widely applied at the model calibration stage and for appropriate selection of hydrographs for identification and validation of model parameters. The results of the calculations obtained in this study indicate the suitability of including the origin of rainfall in the sensitivity analysis and calibration of hydrodynamic models, which results from the different sensitivities of models for normal, heavy, and torrential rain types. In this context, it is necessary to first divide the rainfall data by origin, for which analyses will be performed, including sensitivity analysis and calibration. Considering the obtained results of the calculations, at the stage of identifying the parameters of hydrodynamic models and their validation, precipitation conditions should be included because, for the precipitation caused by heavy rainfall, the values of the sensitivity coefficients were much lower than for torrential ones. Taking into account the values of the sensitivity coefficients obtained, the calibration of the models should not only cover episodes with high rainfall intensity, since this may lead to calculation errors at the stage of applying the model in practice (assessment of the stormwater system operating conditions, design of reservoirs and flow control devices, green infrastructure, etc.).

The article discusses issues related to the trend of population loss in the Far East, how it affects the economy and living standards of the population, assess measures to contain outflows, formulate tasks that can make the region attractive to investors, the population, and those who want to come here. Causal links between the region's economic specialization and social living conditions are assessed. Efforts to improve life without changing the structure of production do not produce the desired result. It is argued that a change in the economic model, the transition from export-raw materials to industrial development, can change the nature of demographic processes and migration sentiments. Changing the economic paradigm opens the possibility to form a need for absolute population growth, to move from the task of "savings" to the multiplication of the people. The most important components of the new model: integration ties with the Asia-Pacific region, involvement in these processes economic and scientific, and technological potential of Russia, setting priorities. These are activities aimed at the development of the oceans and Cosmos, and Culture, where the country retains credibility in the world community, can be most effectively implemented leadership positions. A critical assessment of the existing spatial organization of life and activities in the Far East is needed. It is proposed to discuss adjustments to the administrative-territorial division, reducing the number of subjects of the federation, uniting or re-reporting some of them. The role-playing functions of the largest cities in the Far East, their specialization, and cooperation are discussed. The national task is proposed to assess the possibilities of forming a World City in eastern Russia in the future. This approach changes the perception of the Far East as a colonial-raw suburb, positioning it at the forefront of interaction with dynamic economies, where the potential for professional growth is superior to other regions of the country and is the main condition for achieving a high standard of living.

We present a detailed analysis of the velocity structure of the Virgo cluster using {\it XMM-Newton} observations. Using a novel technique which uses uses the Cu K$\alpha$ instrumental line to calibrate the EPIC-pn energy scale, we are able to obtain velocity measurements with uncertainties down to $\Delta v \sim 100$ km/s. We created 2D projected maps for the velocity, temperature, metallicity, density, pressure and entropy with an spatial resolution of 0.25$'$. We have found that in the innermost gas there is a high velocity structure, most likely indicating the presence of an outflow from the AGN while our analysis of the cluster cool core using RGS data indicates that the velocity of the gas agrees with the M87 optical redshift. An overall gradient in the velocity is seen, with larger values as we move away from the cluster core. The hot gas located within the western radio flow is redshifted, moving with a velocity $\sim 331$ km/s while the hot gas located within the eastern radio flow is blueshifted, with a velocity $\sim 258$ km/s, suggesting the presence of backflows. Pedestrian flow through narrow exits is one the most important features of crowd dynamics and evacuation. This is a particularly important aspect of pedestrian simulation models in that the accuracy is highly dependent on their ability to produce realistic exit flow rates. We firstly identified the four parameters that are most critical for physical interactions of the social force model and then calibrated them against two well-controlled pedestrian experiments. With these calibrated parameters, we discussed the reasonable settings of sensitive parameters for different levels of pedestrian competitiveness. Then, we revisited the basic questions about the effect of the exit location, the bottleneck length, and the effect of obstacles on pedestrian egress. Our simulation results indicated that: (1) The effect of the exit location on the pedestrian egress efficiency is uncertain, and the evacuation efficiency is also related to the exit width and the level of urgency. (2) The “pass-way” after the exit also named as the bottleneck length has a negative impact on the evacuation performance only in the scenarios that the bottleneck length is not more than 2.0 meters. When the bottleneck length exceeds 2.0 meters, pedestrian outflow efficiency reaches an asymptotic. (3) Setting an obstacle near an exit is not leading to a longer pedestrian evacuation time, instead, it is effectively improving pedestrian evacuation.

Outflow itself and the turnover of personnel are natural phenomena and occur in any organisation. The motivational factors influencing outflow can be classified as financial, medical and psychological factors. Compared with the two other factors, the psychological factor is the most complex one. In the research, the author examined these psychological factors among the soldiers of the HDF 93rd CBRN Battalion in 2008 and in 2018 and compared the differences. The author also analysed the relationship between salary-motivated outflow and age, defining a key amount that should be taken into consideration in order to prevent the mass outflow.

The largest part of the water control project belongs to the low-head riverbed floodgate project, and its discharge capacity can be accurately determined in design, which can avoid the inundation of the upstream fertile land and at the same time achieve the purpose of reducing the scale of flood discharge structures and saving project investment. In this paper, the influence of different height difference between the dam floor and the upstream and downstream riverbeds on the discharge capacity is studied through the model test of the discharge capacity and its related parameters of the spillway gate of the orifice outflow dam, and the three-dimensional flow field of the discharge flow of the spillway gate is numerically simulated by FLUENT commercial software. The Reynolds equation is closed by using the standard K-e turbulence numerical model, and the free liquid level is tracked by using the volume of fluid (VOF) method. The tetrahedral unstructured grid is used to divide the grid, and the calculation results of the discharge capacity, flow pattern, water level elevation, velocity field, and pressure field of the floodgate are obtained. Compared with the observation results of the model test, they are in good agreement, which shows that the model used in the numerical simulation is reasonable and the method is correct.

The lymphatics maintain fluid balance by returning interstitial fluid to veins via contraction/compression of vessel segments with check valves. Disruption of lymphatic pumping can result in a condition called lymphedema with interstitial fluid accumulation. Lymphedema treatments are often ineffective, which is partially attributable to insufficient understanding of specialized lymphatic muscle lining the vessels. This muscle exhibits cardiac-like phasic contractions and smooth muscle-like tonic contractions to generate and regulate flow. To understand the relationship between this sub-cellular contractile machinery and organ-level pumping, we have developed a multiscale computational model of phasic and tonic contractions in lymphatic muscle and coupled it to a lymphangion pumping model. Our model uses the sliding filament model (Huxley in Prog Biophys Biophys Chem 7:255–318, 1957) and its adaptation for smooth muscle (Mijailovich in Biophys J 79(5):2667–2681, 2000). Multiple structural arrangements of contractile components and viscoelastic elements were trialed but only one provided physiologic results. We then coupled this model with our previous lumped parameter model of the lymphangion to relate results to experiments. We show that the model produces similar pressure, diameter, and flow tracings to experiments on rat mesenteric lymphatics. This model provides the first estimates of lymphatic muscle contraction energetics and the ability to assess the potential effects of sub-cellular level phenomena such as calcium oscillations on lymphangion outflow. The maximum efficiency value predicted (40%) is at the upper end of estimates for other muscle types. Spontaneous calcium oscillations during diastole were found to increase outflow up to approximately 50% in the range of frequencies and amplitudes tested. Rossby waves on the jet stream are associated with meridional motions, displacing air and the strong potential vorticity (PV) gradient on isentropic surfaces. Poleward motion along sloping isentropic surfaces typically results in ascent and a ridge of air with low PV values. Latent heating in the ascending warm conveyor belt (WCB) enables air to cross isentropic surfaces so that the WCB outflow into a ridge occurs in a higher isentropic layer than the inflow. However, the PV impermeability theorem states that there can be no PV flux across isentropic surfaces, so how can heating alter the PV pattern of a Rossby wave? Here, the ways in which heating in WCBs can influence Rossby wave evolution at tropopause level are explained in the context of the PV impermeability theorem. First, a WCB outflow volume is defined by the upper tropospheric air in a ridge that has experienced net heating over the last few days, using a tracer within short global model forecasts. Second, the boundary of this outflow volume is tracked backwards using isentropic trajectories allowing quantification of the degree to which circulation is conserved, as predicted by theory, even though the WCB transports mass into the volume from lower isentropic layers. This diabatic flux of mass into the outflow volume results in an increase in density and expansion in outflow area, the partition being determined approximately by PV inversion. The area expansion, combined with conservation of circulation, implies more negative vorticity. The relative vorticity change from divergent outflow can be as large as the decrease relative to the background planetary vorticity associated with poleward displacement of the circuit. The additional anticyclonic relative motion results in enhanced anticyclonic over-turning of PV contours on the eastern flank of the ridge, altering qualitatively the nonlinear evolution of the Rossby wave.

Geothermal is commonly considered to be a clean, green energy source but it does produce some greenhouse gas emissions, particularly CO2. The amount of CO2 is usually measured as an emission intensity of kg of CO2 emitted per MWh of electricity produced. However, the quantity that is measured for the calculation of emission intensity is the waste CO2 in the separated steam that feeds the power plant. In terms of total CO2 emissions this is only part of the picture as there is a natural outflow of CO2 into the atmosphere at most geothermal systems and this natural outflow is affected by the operation of a power plant. The correct measure of CO2 emissions is the extra CO2 output resulting from the operation of the power plant. Here we discuss a computer modelling study of the Ohaaki (New Zealand) geothermal project and show that during the lifetime of the project extra CO2 is emitted but after the project is shut down the emission of CO2 is reduced below its natural level and viewed over a long time period (300 years) there is no extra CO2 emitted as a result of the operation of the Ohaaki power plant.

Continuous flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) outflow graft stenosis constitutes a severe complication. Treatment options include surgical pump exchange, transcatheter procedures, or systemic thrombolysis. We present a case of a spontaneous mechanical twisting of the outflow graft at two distinct points, which was treated by a two‐step percutaneous stent implantation. Self‐expanding stents were used during the first procedure. We also ensured distal bilateral percutaneous neuroprotection against cerebrovascular embolism. During the second, previously unpredicted procedure, we used balloon‐expandable bare‐metal stents to overcome the torque of the graft, because of their higher radial force. It was assumed that the external, self‐expanding layer of the stent might protect the graft from the bare‐metal stents. The effects of the treatment were monitored both clinically and through computed tomography angiography. The check‐up 12 months later revealed nothing of note. Interventional transcatheter procedures are a safe treatment option for outflow graft stenosis, with good long‐term effects. Both self‐expanding and balloon‐expandable stents can be used for transcatheter intervention. Both the incidence of the graft twisting and the radial force of the implanted stent seem to be critical and robust predictors of the long‐term result of percutaneous therapy.
