Le covid19 et la crise ukrainienne ont remis à l’ordre du jour, pour tous, la question de « l’urgence alimentaire ». Si la nécessité d’assurer la sécurité alimentaire fait l’unanimité, en Algérie, ce n’est cependant pas le cas pour l’orientation future des politiques publiques dans ce domaine. Ce travail tente de contribuer à ce débat à travers une analyse en prospective stratégique à 2035 identifiant de nouvelles orientations des politiques de soutien des systèmes productifs agricole et halieutique. Il démontre qu’il est nécessaire, pour mieux se préparer à ces enjeux du « temps long et court », d'agir maintenant et d’aller plus loin « qu’en lieu et place » d’ajustements à la marge. Aussi, ces nouvelles politiques doivent accompagner « un double changement de paradigme » celui du modèle alimentaire et des systèmes productifs agricole et halieutique. La mise en place d’une politique transversale de la sécurité alimentaire en Algérie apparait alors comme indispensable pour promouvoir et réussir cette nouvelle dynamique.

The paper analyses the growth models of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico since 1996. We depart from the typology proposed by Bizberg (2019) and apply a growth decomposition based on the Sraffian supermultiplier (Freitas & Dweck, 2013). We argue that the growth models perspective, introduced by Baccaro and Pontusson (2016), contributes to understanding the diversities of capitalism in Latin America. We find that the commodities boom oriented the countries towards export-led growth models, especially in Bolivia, Chile, and Mexico. Brazil and Argentina presented a hybrid growth model, with higher household consumption and government expenditure, along with exports growth. After the commodities boom, the export-led model was no longer feasible for commodity exporters. Mexico sustained the existing model, based on low-value-added manufacturing exports. Brazil and Argentina reduced public expenditures, generating economic stagnation. Chile and Bolivia increased public expenditure, sustaining growth at a slower pace. This work extends the growth models perspective to emerging countries, integrating with former discussions on the Latin American political economy. It also highlights how the growth models evolved in tandem with changing international conditions. Finally, the paper opens a research agenda for the political economy of stagnation in Latin American economies. Nous nous écartons de la typologie proposée par Ilán Bizberg (2019) et appliquons une décomposition de la croissance basée sur le Sraffian supermultiplier (Freitas & Dweck, 2013). Nous soutenons que la mise en perspective des modèles de croissance, introduite par Lucio Baccaro et Jonas Pontusson (2016), contribue à comprendre les diversités du capitalisme en Amérique latine. Nous constatons que le boom des matières premières a orienté les pays vers des modèles de croissance tirés par les exportations, notamment en Bolivie, au Chili et au Mexique. Le Brésil et l’Argentine ont développé un modèle de croissance hybride, reposant en partie sur une consommation des ménages et des dépenses publiques plus élevées, ainsi qu’une croissance des exportations. Après ce boom, le modèle axé sur les exportations n’était plus réalisable pour les exportateurs de matières premières. Le Mexique a maintenu le modèle existant, basé sur les exportations de produits manufacturés à faible valeur ajoutée. Le Brésil et l’Argentine ont réduit leurs dépenses publiques, générant une stagnation économique. Le Chili et la Bolivie ont augmenté leurs dépenses publiques, soutenant ainsi la croissance à un rythme plus lent. Ce travail étend l’étude des modèles de croissance aux pays émergents, en tenant compte des anciennes contributions de l’économie politique latino-américaine. Il met également en évidence la façon dont les modèles de croissance ont évolué en même temps que les conditions internationales changeantes. Enfin, l’article ouvre un programme de recherche sur l’économie politique de la stagnation dans les économies latino-américaines. Nosotros nos alejamos de la tipología propuesta por Ilán Bizberg (2019) y aplicamos una descomposición del crecimiento basado en el Sraffian supermultiplier (Freitas & Dweck, 2013). Nosotros sostenemos que la puesta en perspectiva de los modelos de crecimiento, introducida por Lucio Baccaro y Jonas Pontusson (2016) contribuye a comprender las diversidad de capitalismos en América Latina. Constatamos que el boom de las materias primas ha orientado los países hacia modelos de crecimiento arrastrados por las exportaciones, especialmente en Bolicia, Chile y México. Brasil y Argentina han desarrollado un modelo de crecimiento híbrido, que se basa en parte sobre el consumo de los hogares y con un gasto público elevado, y también un crecimiento de las exportaciones. Después de ese boom, el modelo basado en las exportaciones no era más realizable para los países exportadores de materias primas. México ha mantenido el modelo existente, basado sobre las exportaciones de productos manufacturado con poco valor agregado. Brasil y Argentina han reducidio sus gasto público, generando un estancamiento económico. Chile y Bolivia aumentaron su gasto público, sosteniendo de esa manera el crecimiento pero a un ritmo mas lento. Este trabajo extiende el estudio a otros paises emergentes, teniendo encuenta las anteriores contribuciones de la economía política latino-americana. Se pone también en evidencia la manera en la cual los modelos de crecimiento han evolucionado al mismo tiempo que han cambiado las condiciones internacionales. Por último, el artículo abre un programa de investigaciones sobre la economía política del estancamiento de las economías latinoamericanas.

A slowing trend in the pace of growth, persistent mass unemployment, low productivity gains, competitiveness limited to certain sectors, etc. are all indicators that illustrate the obsolescence of the Moroccan growth model. Nearly seven decades after independence, growth in Morocco remains even less reassuring, unstable and volatile, highly correlated with climatic variability, and generating budget and trade deficits. Certainly, the achievements are numerous, but the bottlenecks are even more so. This observation leads us to question the growth model(s) adopted since independence if we really have any. The objective of this paper is to study the characteristics of economic growth in Morocco, from independence to 2020, based on data from the World Bank, the High Commission for Planning (HCP), the foreign exchange office, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, etc. The objective is to identify the configuration of the Moroccan growth model, as well as to highlight the obstacles that hinder the emergence of our economy. After having exposed a literature review of the various models of economic growth, we described the profile of the economic growth in Morocco since the sixties to two thousand and twenty, and this by the analysis of the various plans adopted by the public authorities. This analysis allowed us to identify the three growth models that Morocco adopted: a first Moroccan one at the beginning, aiming at the Moroccanisation of the economy, then a second one qualified as anti-social in the eighties and finally a third one called platform or FDI model at the beginning of the two thousand years. To finish our study by emphasizing the signs of breathlessness of our growth model. JEL Classification: F43, O47. Près de sept décennies après l'indépendance, la croissance au Maroc demeure encore moins rassurante, une croissance instable et volatile, fortement corrélée à la variabilité climatique, génératrice de déficit budgétaire et commercial. Certes, les exploits sont nombreux, mais les goulots d’étranglement sont d’autant plus. Ce constat nous pousse à s’interroger sur le/les modèle(s) de croissance adopté(s) depuis l’indépendance, si on en dispose à vrai dire! L’objectif de ce papier est d’étudier les grands traits de la croissance économique au Maroc, et ce, depuis l’indépendance jusqu’aux années 2020, en se basant sur les données offertes par la banque mondiale, le Haut-Commissariat au Plan (HCP), l’office des changes, le ministère de l’Économie et des Finances, etc. La finalité escomptée est d’identifier la configuration du modèle de croissance marocain, mais aussi mettre l’accent sur les pierres d’achoppement qui entravent l’émergence de notre économie. Après avoir exposé une revue de littérature des différents modèles de croissance économique, nous avons décortiqué le profil de la croissance économique au Maroc depuis les années soixante à deux mille vingt, et ce par l’analyse des différents plans adoptés par les pouvoirs publics. Une telle analyse nous a permis d’identifier les trois modèles de croissance qu’a adopté le Maroc: un premier Maroco-marocain au départ, visant la marocanisation de l’économie, puis un deuxième qualifié d’antisocial dans les années quatre-vingts et enfin un troisième dit de plateforme ou d’IDE au début des années deux mille. International audience; La dimension citoyenne des projets autour des énergies territorialisées soulève de nombreux problèmes formels et continue à faire débat. Les « communautés d’énergie citoyenne », entérinées par la loi du 8 novembre 2019 relative à l’énergie et au climat, retient une acception large fondée sur trois piliers : une participation ouverte et volontaire, une proximité géographique des actionnaires ou des membres, et des bénéfices environnementaux, économiques ou sociaux pour ses membres. Ce travail de recherche porte sur quatre sociétés naissantes qui, par-delà un projet initial commun alliant questions environnementales et développement du territoire, doivent opérer des choix dans leur fonctionnement et leurs objectifs, réalisant des compromis entre volontés politiques et contraintes économiques. Ces trajectoires singulières vont être analysées à la croisée de deux cadres théoriques, la théorie de la régulation et la théorie des conventions, afin d'appréhender des logiques d’action individuelles et collectives au regard d’un ’idéal de participation démocratique, qui prend la forme d’un engagement bénévole ou d’un modèle de cogestion par la prise de décisions. Nous démontrons qu’en dépit d’un projet initial commun, l'objectif de production d’énergies renouvelables devient prééminent sur celui de réduction de la consommation via la sensibilisation à la sobriété énergétique. Ce modèle de structures de taille relativement importante en capacité de produire massivement des énergies renouvelables va apparaître comme le format légitime, valorisé par le fléchage des subventions régionales et par le discours des fédérations qui les représentent.

The purpose of this study is to determine money and price dynamics under the gold standard in the one-sector neoclassical growth model. To do this, a model is built upon a few approaches in the literature on dynamic economic theory. In particular, the production sector is based on the Solow model, the gold standard and price dynamics are founded on Barro (1979), and money demand is influenced by the traditional money-in-the-utility-function setup. The model integrates the ideas of these approaches within a compact framework. Through simulations, it is shown that the economic system is characterized by a unique unstable steady state. Also, comparative dynamic analyses regarding changes in some parameters are conducted. Resumen: El propósito de este estudio es determinar la dinámica del dinero y los precios bajo el patrón oro en un modelo de crecimiento neoclásico de un sector. Para esto, se construye un modelo utilizando algunas aproximaciones de la literatura sobre la teoría de la dinámica económica. En particular, el sector productivo se basa en el modelo de Solow, el patrón oro y la dinámica de los precios está fundamentada en Barro (1979) y la demanda de dinero está influenciada por el marco tradicional con dinero en la función de utilidad. El modelo integra las ideas de estas aproximaciones dentro de una estructura compacta. A través de simulaciones, se muestra que el sistema económico se caracteriza por un estado estacionario único e inestable. Résumé: L’objectif de cette étude est de déterminer la dynamique de la quantité de monnaie et des prix sous un régime de l’étalon-or dans un modèle de croissance néoclassique à un secteur. Pour cela, un modèle est construit à l’aide de quelques approximations de la littérature sur la théorie de la dynamique économique. En particulier, le secteur productif est basé sur le modèle de Solow, l’hypothèse de l’étalon-or et la dynamique des prix sont basés sur Barro (1979) et la demande de monnaie est influencée par le cadre traditionnel où la monnaie rentre dans la fonction d’utilité. Le modèle intègre les idées de ces différentes approches dans une seule structure compacte. Des simulations montrent que le système économique est caractérisé par un état stationnaire unique et instable. Yeast and microalgae are microorganisms widely studied for the production of high-value compounds used in food and energy area. This work proposes a process of mixed culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Chlorella vulgaris for both growth and CO2 mitigation. The process relies on mutual symbiosis between the two organisms through gas exchange, which is possible by engineering the co-dominance of populations. The two populations must be balanced in such a way so that microalgae can cope with the rate of CO2 production by the yeast activity. The process is performed in non-aerated 5l-photo-bioreactor fitted with a fermentation lock to prevent gas exchange with the outside atmosphere. With this set-up, the CO2 is produced in dissolved form and is available to the microalgae avoiding degassing and dissolution phenomena. The two organism populations are balanced at approximately 20 millions cells per ml, 12% CO2 produced by yeast was reutilized by microalgae within 168 hours of culture. A yeast and microalgae growth model in mixed culture is developed by combining each individual growth model. The predictive yeast model considers the possible metabolic pathways involved in fermentation and respiration and imposes limitation factors on these pathways, in this manner, the model can predict the partition of these pathways. The microalgae individual model is based on the photosynthetic activity. The results of this work show the feasibility of such process and could provide a basis for the development of a green process of low environmental impact., La levure et la microalgue sont des microorganismes très étudiés pour la production de composés à haute valeur ajoutée pour des secteurs tels que l’agroalimentaire et l’énergie. Ce travail de thèse propose un procédé de culture mixte entre la levure Saccharomyces cerevisiae et la microalgue Chlorella vulgaris pour la croissance des deux espèces tout en limitant le rejet en CO2. Le procédé repose sur la symbiose mutuelle entre les deux organismes autour des échanges de gaz, qui est rendu possible en imposant une co-dominance en termes de population. Les populations doivent être équilibrées pour que les microalgues puissent gérer la production de CO2. Le procédé est réalisé en photo-bioréacteur de 5 litres non-aéré et fermé, afin d’éviter les échanges gazeux avec l’environnement externe. Dans cette configuration, le CO2 est produit sous forme dissoute et directement accessible aux microalgues, évitant les phénomènes de dégazage et de dissolution. Les populations de levures et de microalgues atteignent une concentration égale (20 millions de cellules par ml) au bout de 24 heures de culture, restent stables jusqu’à la fin de la culture (168 heures) et les microalgues recyclent 12% du CO2 produit par les levures. Un modèle cinétique de la levure et de la microalgue en culture mixte est développé en combinant les modèles individuels de la levure et de la microalgue. Le modèle prédictif de la levure prend en compte les possibles voies métaboliques impliquées dans la fermentation et la respiration de ces voies est prédite en y intégrant des facteurs de limitation. Le modèle de la microalgue est basé sur l’activité photosynthétique. Les résultats de ce travail montrent la faisabilité du procédé de culture mixte entre hétérotrophe et autotrophe et pourrait apporter les bases pour le développement d’un procédé écologique à faible impact environnemental.

This thesis is a contribution to the mathematical study of interacting particle systems, and more precisely of random growth models representing a spreading shape over time in a lattice. These processes occur when one is interested in the evolution of a population or the spread of an epidemic. One of those models is the contact process introduced by Harris in 1974 with the goal of representing this specific spread. It is one of the simplest interacting particle systems that exhibits a critical phenomenon and today, in the cubic lattice, its behavior is well-known on each phase. Here, we study the standard contact process the Boolean graph which is a random graph in Rd. Our work in particular was motivated by the following result of L. M´enard and A. Singh: on this random network, the contact process admits a non-trivial phase transition. This is the first example of a non-bounded degree graph on which the phase transition of the contact process is non-trivial. We begin our work with a study of the supercritical Boolean model to find large scale regularity properties that allow us to adapt the usual approaches of the study of the contact process on the deterministic networks to the Boolean random framework. In our main result, we show that our model satisfies a deterministic asymptotic shape theorem. In fact, it appears that the large scale regularity properties mentioned above are sufficient to obtain an asymptotic shape theorem on other random graphs, Cette thèse s'inscrit dans l'étude des systèmes de particules en interaction et plus précisément dans celle des modèles de croissance aléatoire qui représentent une quantité qui grandit au cours du temps et s'étend sur un réseau. New types of phenotyping tools generate large amounts of data on many aspects of plant physiology and morphology with high spatial and temporal resolution. These new phenotyping data are potentially useful to improve understanding and prediction of complex traits, like yield, that are characterized by strong environmental context dependencies, i.e., genotype by environment interactions. For an evaluation of the utility of new phenotyping information, we will look at how this information can be incorporated in different classes of genotype-to-phenotype (G2P) models. G2P models predict phenotypic traits as functions of genotypic and environmental inputs. In the last decade, access to high-density single nucleotide polymorphism markers (SNPs) and sequence information has boosted the development of a class of G2P models called genomic prediction models that predict phenotypes from genome wide marker profiles. The challenge now is to build G2P models that incorporate simultaneously extensive genomic information alongside with new phenotypic information. Beyond the modification of existing G2P models, new G2P paradigms are required. We present candidate G2P models for the integration of genomic and new phenotyping information and illustrate their use in examples. Special attention will be given to the modelling of genotype by environment interactions. International audience; Accurate predictions of the timing of physiological stages and the development rate are crucial for predicting crop performance under field conditions. Plant development is controlled by the leaf appearance rate (LAR) and our understanding of how LAR responds to environmental factors is still limited. Here, we tested the hypothesis that carbon availability may account for the effects of irradiance, photoperiod, atmospheric CO2 concentration, and ontogeny on LAR. We conducted three experiments in growth chambers to quantify and disentangle these effects for both winter and spring wheat cultivars. Variations of LAR observed between environmental scenarios were well explained by the supply/demand ratio for carbon, quantified using the photothermal quotient. We therefore developed an ecophysiological model based on the photothermal quotient that accounts for the effects of temperature, irradiance, photoperiod, and ontogeny on LAR. Comparisons of observed leaf stages and LAR with simulations from our model, from a linear thermal-time model, and from a segmented linear thermal-time model corrected for sowing date showed that our model can simulate the observed changes in LAR in the field with the lowest error. Our findings demonstrate that a hypothesis-driven approach that incorporates more physiology in specific processes of crop models can increase their predictive power under variable environments.

The Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a parameter of many growth models used to predict biomass. LAI was used, for instance, in the Mosicas (Martiné, 1999) and Gamede (Vayssières et al., 2009) growth models for sugarcane and grass respectively, on Reunion Island, France. Those models have exhibited some limitations and prediction error can be significant. The aim of our study was to estimate LAI from satellite imagery in order to force a grass growth model. Around 430 samples were obtained from nine experimental plots situated around Saint-Pierre and Plaine-des-Cafres (South-West of the island) from April to August 2015. The sample LAI values were averaged by plot and associated with average vegetation indices (VIs), computed from Spot5take5 data (simulation of Sentinel-2 data). From testing of different VIs we observed a stronger correlation between NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and LAI compared to other VIs. The relation was so great that we found correlation values of 0.87 and 0.92 for temperate and tropical grass, respectively., En raison de son insularité et de la croissance constante de sa population, la Réunion est exposée à certains problèmes agricoles, tels que la pression foncière et les problèmes environnementaux. Parallèlement le secteur des ruminants souhaite développer la production et accroître l’autosuffisance de l’île pour la production de viande et de lait, en dépit des contraintes sévères de disponibilité des terres. Des périodes de sécheresse plus fréquentes ont été observées ces dernières années. Pour compenser le manque d’herbe, les agriculteurs importent descompléments d’alimentation, ce qui entraîne des coûts élevés pour l’économie agricole. Aujourd’hui, l’enjeu majeur est de pouvoir estimer la disponibilité des fourrages, à l’échelle du territoire, afin d’optimiser la distribution des fourrages tout au long de l’année et anticiper le besoin d’importation de fourrage. Notre étude s’est attachée à combiner deux méthodes dans une approche hybride, basée sur un modèle de croissance corrigé par des données d’images satellitaires où la prédiction du modèle est remplacée par des données satellitaires. La première étape présentée ici consistait à analyser la relation entre le LAI calculé à partir d’images SPOT5 à haute résolution spatiale (10 m) et plusieurs indices de végétation (IV), puis à comparer différents modèles de régression, capables de prédire le rendement de la biomasse à l’échelle des parcelles et des fermes. L’étude a été menée durant la phase de désorbitation de SPOT5, la phase appelée SPOT5take5. Quatre indices ont été étudiés : NDVI, NDWI, MSAVI2, RDVI. L’étude a été menée sur 9 parcelles) réparties selon un gradient d’altitude afin d'appréhender les différentes espèces de graminées (tropicales et tempérées) présentes sur l'île. Le LAI a été estimé grâce à un appareil mesurant le rayonnement photo-synthétiquement actif absorbé (Accupar Ceptometer model LP 80, Decagon Devices), et chaque mesure a été géolocalisée. On lie ensuite la moyenne de l’indice de végétation avec la moyenne de LAI à l’échelle de la parcelle. La relation est exprimée par une équation de type exponentielle, approchée avec une régression standard. L’analyse de l’erreur est faite grâce au coefficient de corrélationet la somme des erreurs au carré. Après élimination des données aberrantes, 34 valeurs issues des moyennes par parcelles sont exploitables pour établir la relation en indice de végétation et LAI. Les 4 indices étudiés montrent une corrélation importante entre IV et LAI. Toutefois, c’est le NDVI qui montre de meilleurs résultats avec un coefficient de corrélation entre 0,92 et 0,94 (p

L'étude du fonctionnement des peuplements mélangés n'est pas près de s'épuiser. En ce qui concerne l'effet du mélange sur la productivité, les travaux ont surtout porté sur la croissance radiale ou en surface terrière. Mais la productivité dépend aussi de l'influence du mélange sur la croissance en hauteur, plus difficile à appréhender : les deux effets sont-ils de même ampleur ? Vont-ils dans le même sens ? Quels sont les mécanismes ? Méthode d'étude et premières réponses.

Mountain grasslands provide numerous ecosystem services that are likely to be impacted by global change. Plant functional traits hold great promise to succinctly characterise plant community response to changing environmental conditions and its effect on associated services; with growing evidence of the importance of intra-specific trait variability. I propose here a novel agent-based model, MountGrass, that combines the modelling of species rich grassland communities with phenotypic plasticity. These two key components are integrated via allocation trade-offs based on established empirical patterns of strategic differentiation in resource-use.With MountGrass, I explored the impact of phenotypic plasticity on individual plant growth and on main properties of grassland communities. At the individual level, the parametrised model revealed a strong impact of plasticity on growth and species’ fundamental niches, with potentially large impacts on community properties. These effects are explained by the convergence of species’ strategies and the reduction of the sensitivity to variable conditions. At the community level, simulations confirmed the strong effect of plastic allocation on community structure and species richness. These effects are driven by the cumulative effect of a reduction of both abiotic filtering and fitness differences between species. However, no clear effect on the dominant strategy or productivity could be detected.Going further, the robustness of these findings and other patterns of community dynamics should be analysed with alternative or extended implementations of MountGrass. In sum, this work opens a door towards a better integration and understanding of the role of the intra-specific variability in complex plant community dynamics., Les prairies de montagne offrent de nombreux services ecosystémiques qui sont menacés par le changement global. Les traits fonctionnels constituent un outil prometteur pour caractériser les réponses des communautés à des changements de conditions environnementales et leurs répercussions sur les services associés. Cependant, des résulats de plus en plus nombreuses soulignent l’importance de la variabilité intra-spécifique des traits a également été mise en évidence. Pour étudier ces effets, je propose un nouveau modèle à base d’agents, MountGrass, qui combine la modélisation de communautés végétales riches en espèces avec des processus de plasticité phénotypique. Ces deux éléments au coeur du modèle sont associés grâce à des compromis d’allocation basés sur des patrons empiriques établis de stratégies d’utilisation des resources.Avec MountGrass, j’ai exploré l’impact de la plasticité phénotypique sur la croissance individuelle et les propriétés principales des communautés prairiales. À l’échelle individuelle, le modèle paramétré a révélé un fort impact positif de la plasticité phénotypique sur la croissance mais aussi sur la niche fondamentaledes espèces. Des phénomènes de convergence et de réduction de la sensibilité aux variations de conditionsexpliquent ces effets. À l’échelle des communautés, les simulations ont confirmé de forts effets de la plasticité sur la structure des communautés et leur diversité spécifique. Ces effets sont expliqués par l’effet combiné de la réduction du filtre abiotique et de la réduction des différences de compétitivité. Cependant, aucun effet majeur sur la stratégie dominante ou la productivité n’a pu être mis en évidence.Des implémentations alternatives ou des extensions du modèle devraient permettre de tester la robustesse des résultats obtenus et d’analyser d’autres schémas de dynamiques des communautés. En conclusion, ce travail ouvre la voie à une meilleure considération et une meilleure compréhension du rôle des variabilités intra-spécifiques dans les dynamiques des communautés végétales.

Ce travail a été mené dans le but de construire un nouveau modèle mathématique pour l’étude de la dynamique des fermentations en oenologie, qui soit capable de simuler des compétitions entre plusieurs espèces de levures. Le modèle a été validé et calibré sur des données produites par un modèle informatique existant «SOFA», dont les paramètres ont été calés sur les données biologiques concernant une levure « Saccharomyces cerevisiae ». En parallèle, une étude mathématique sur les modèles de croissance en microbiologie a été menée et a permis d’établir plusieurs résultats nouveaux : Conditions suffisantes ou nécessaires pour l’obtention d’un sur-rendement dans les cas de modèles de croissance à rendement constants ou variables.

Data access via doi 10.7910/DVN/AEFLHB.; Temperatures are warming on a global scale, a phenomenon that likely will affect future crop productivity. Crop growth models are useful tools to predict the likely effects of these global changes on agricultural productivity and to develop strategies to maximize the benefits and minimize the detriments of such changes. However, few such models have been tested at the higher temperatures expected in the future. Therefore, a “Hot Serial Cereal” experiment was conducted on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), the world’s foremost food and feed crop, in order to obtain a dataset appropriate for testing the high temperature performance of wheat growth models. The wheat (Cereal) was planted serially (Serial) about every six weeks for over two years at Maricopa, Arizona, USA, which experiences the whole range of temperatures at which plants grow on Earth. In addition, on six planting dates infrared heaters in a T-FACE (temperature free-air controlled enhancement) system (Hot) were deployed over one-third of the plots to warm the wheat by additional target 1.5°C during daytime and 3.0°C at night. Achieved average degrees of warming were 1.3 and 2.7°C for day and night. Overall, a dataset covering 27 differently treated wheat crops with three replicates each was obtained covering an air temperature range from -2 to 42°C. Herein, the management, soils, weather, physiology, phenology, growth, yield, quality, and other data are presented.

Within the Nanoform Theme, Ax Nanosciences, ICB, we realize the growth of 1D, 2D and 3D hybrid nanostructures based on TiO2 by MOCVD. Our work deals with the theoretical aspect of the formation of these nanostructures (growth and kinetic models, structure and texture) and the study of photoelectric, optical and physicochemical properties as well as the development of applications of these structures in physics (random laser), photocatalysis, energy (solar cells). Under certain perfectly controlled conditions, we obtain original TiO2 structures not yet described in the literature: membranes, rods , canals, crucibles, COHN (COaxiales Heterostructures Nanowires). Our previous work made it possible to identify the probable origin of these structures: use of ferromagnetic catalysts in the presence of induction heating. The study of this mechanism is totally new.; Au sein de la Thématique Nanoform, Axe Nanosciences, ICB, nous réalisons la croissance de nanostructures hybrides 1D, 2D et 3D à base de TiO2 par MOCVD. Nos travaux portent sur l’aspect théorique de la formation de ces nanostructures (modèles de croissance et cinétique, structure et texture) et l’étude des propriétés photoélectriques, optiques, physicochimiques ainsi que sur le développement d’applications de ces structures dans le domaine de la physique (random laser), de la photocatalyse, de l’énergie (cellules solaires). The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of coupling dynamic models of grass growth with remote sensing data for two contrasting countries: Reunion Island and Kalahari (South Africa). Two phases followed one another. A first exploratory phase, based on SPOT5 and SPOT5take5 images (desorbed satellites under study) allowed us to learn from this experience. In Reunion the adjustment of an empirical model between vegetation indices and biomass generates too much error. However it is possible to estimate the Leaf Area Index (LAI) thanks to the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). More complex Kalahari rangelands with different vegetation strata (grasses, shrubs, trees) failed to estimate grass cover conditions. This phase set the stage to work on a more durable sensor over time, Sentinel-2. Sentinel-2 data made it possible to estimate the LAI of Reunion Island grasslands with a RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of 0.63 (r² = 0.82). The LAI thus estimated was used in the coupling of the dynamic model, allowing a general decrease of the RMSE of the order of 40% compared to the model without coupling. These results were obtained during the austral winter, the dry season. During the austral summer, the more abundant rains speed up the growth of the plants and the growth cycles become shorter. Satellite images without cloud cover are becoming scarce. Climate change is exerting daunting challenges to world agriculture. Several studies have shown that modern crop cultivars are not well adapted to the recent climate changes (Brisson et al., 2010; Oury et al., 2012). Crop models are potentially able to capture crop genotype-to-phenotype relationships. They are hence a helpful tool to identify and assess the effectiveness of improved crop traits and to support the efficiency of plant breeding programs (Messina et al., 2009; Martre et al., 2014; Hammer et al., 2016). A recent compilation of studies (Yin and Struik, 2016) described some of the progress in combining crop modelling and genetics but it also recognized that current crop models need upgrading. This special issue aims to contribute to the further development of this research area with a particular focus on crops grown under a changing climate. It presents results of a workshop of the Wheat team (https://www. agmip.org/s/wheat/) of The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP; Rosenzweig et al., 2013) and of the Expert Working Group on Wheat Plant and Crop Modeling of the Wheat Initiative (http://www.wheatinitiative.org/activities/ expert-working-groups/wheat-plant-and-crop-modelling) in 2014 at INRA Clermont-Ferrand, France, and includes also invited papers. The contributions cover three main areas. 1. Improving crop growth models to account for climate change impacts Several recent papers (e.g. Rötter et al., 2011; Boote et al., 2013; Ewert et al., 2015), have discussed the need for an upgrading of current crop models to efficiently project the growth of crops under conditions that will more often be encountered in future climates, with higher temperature, more frequent heat spells, more severe and longer periods of drought, or flooding. To improve crop models , an important step are model inter-comparison studies, which requires a level of international coordination that has only recently been made possible by AgMIP, and in Europe by the project on Modelling European Agriculture with Climate Change for Food Security of the Joint Research Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (http://macsur.eu/). Two papers in this special issue report results from such concerted research actions. Maiorano et al. (2017) present the first concerted crop model improvement study following up on recent wheat model intercomparison exercises (Asseng et al., 2013; Asseng et al., 2015; Martre et al., 2015; Cammarano et al., 2016), where 15 models were improved for predicting the impact of high temperature on wheat crop growth and yield. The authors show that the improvement of individual model skills translates into a reduced uncertainty of the multi-model ensemble prediction and in a reduction by half of the number of models which are needed in a multi-model ensemble to stay within acceptable uncertainty range. Heat stress signals are in the form of absolute temperature thresholds above which the formation of reproductive sink (Alghabari et al., 2014; Prasad and Djanaguiraman, 2014) or leaf senescence (Zhao et al., 2007) could be adversely affected. Under warm conditions the air and surface temperatures can differ by more than 10 • C (Siebert et al., 2014) and heat stress effect on sink formation or leaf senescence are likely determined by tissue or canopy temperature (Eyshi Rezaei et al., 2015). It may thus be more important to consider the organ or canopy temperature as the driving variable of crops to heat stress rather than air temperature as typically used by most crop models so far. But how good are current crop models to predict canopy temperature? What is the importance of considering canopy temperature to simulate the impact of heat stress on grain yield formation? These questions were addressed by Webber et al. (2017), who evaluated nine wheat crop models that implement different mechanistic or empirical algorithms to calculate canopy temperature. The models varied widely in their ability to simulate measured canopy temperature and in general had better predictions of yield when calculated canopy temperature was used to model the effect of heat stress on processes determining grain yield but the improvement was relatively small. Several studies have previously suggested that the level of sink limitation of yield formation may significantly increase under future climate. Shi et al. (2017) studied the effect of high night temperature on rice yield formation under different levels of nitrogen supply. They used a novel modeling approach to quantify source–sink relationships during the grain filling period and showed that increased nitrogen application does not alleviate the impact of high night temperature on source-sink interactions across cultivars and seasons (water supply). However, genetic differences in the tolerance to high night temperature appeared to be related to genetic differences in sink size. Transparent evaluation of crop models with detailed field studies is an important aspect of model improvement that helps to set the limits of the conditions under which a given model can be used with enough confidence and to identify aspects where improvements are needed. Asseng et al. (2017) used field experiments with modified sink–source relationships to explore how the Nwheat crop model respond to such modifications. The authors show that their model is able to reproduce several experimental treatments with reduced source (e.g. crop shading) or sink (e.g. ear halving) but they also identify deficiencies in simulating grain set and final grain size, point to areas http://dx. where Nwheat, and most likely other wheat and cereal models, need improvement. 2. Modeling the response of genotypes to the environment More than two decades ago researchers have started to emphasize the potential role that crop models could play for crop improvement (Shorter et al., 1991). Since then important milestones have been reached with the use of crop models to characterize breeding and production environments (e.g. Chenu et al., 2013; Harrison et al., 2014), the development of QTL-based models (e.g. Quilot et al., 2005; Yin et al., 2005; Zheng et al., 2013), and more recently the link of crop models with genomic prediction models (e.g. Heslot et al., 2014; Technow et al., 2015). Several articles in this special issue contribute to the advancement of genotype to phenotype modelling. Most underrepresented so far are studies that aim to link crop system models with understandings of gene action at the molecular level. In this special issue Chew et al. (2017) present such an effort in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana and discuss avenues to further extend on cross-disciplinary work for crop species. The type of models presented by Chew and coworkers represent a new step in integrating knowledge across biological scales with significant potential to contribute to crop improvement. Uptmoor et al. (2017) combined a genome-wide prediction model with a process-based flowering time model to predict the heading time of the progeny of a barley population in independent environments. Rice, like several other cereal species, shows large adaptive phenotypic plasticity enabling yield stability across environments. Such plasticity is often observed between tiller production and pan-icle size. In their paper Kumar et al. (2017) report on the plasticity of organ size and number of 12 high-yielding rice genotypes of high and low tillering plant types. They show that most of the observed genetic variations in morphological and yield component traits can be predicted by the rice model SAMARA and discuss the possibility offered by such a type of process-based models to predict the response of new ideotypes to changing environments and crop management practices. Gouache et al. (2017) used a modified version of the phenology module of the wheat model ARCWHEAT parametrized for hundreds of genotypes to analyze the possibilities to adapt wheat to future growing conditions in France. Their results suggest that the beginning of stem extension can be advanced by several weeks without significant risk of frost damage and that photoperiod insensitive PpdD1 and spring type Vrn3 allele combinations are undesirable. The authors discuss the need, in addition to crop modeling, to use available knowledge in crop physiology and of the allelic variability at the loci underpinning important traits in gene pools to implement breeding ideotypes in commercial improvement programs. Global simulation studies usually do not consider the adaptation of cultivars to regional or sub-regional climate, soil properties, and crop management practices, which limits our capacity to analyze the impacts of growing conditions on food security. Gbegbelegbe et al. (2017) calibrated the wheat crop model CROPSIM-CERES for modern high-yielding cultivars adapted to the 17 CIMMYT wheat mega environments. Their results show that the use of ex-ante calibrated region-specific cultivars improves significantly the model skills for predicting grain yield at country level. This study is an important step to reduce the uncertainty of the projections of regional and global wheat production to enable advanced studies on food security to address questions related to the impact of genetic improvement and agricultural technology with climate change. Comprehensive model testing is often a neglected aspect to identify model strengths and deficiencies. Raymundo et al. (2017) present a comprehensive field testing of the SUBSTOR-potato model with experiments carried out in 19 countries. They show that while tuber yield is in general well simulated, for different potato species and cultivars, the response of the model to elevated atmospheric CO 2 concentration and high temperature needs to be improved before it can be used to project the impact of climate change and discussed how its skills can be enhanced. 3. Modelling the impact of climate change on grains and seeds quality Studies of the impact of climate change on food security issues have essentially focused on crop production, while nutritional and functional quality aspects of grains have received limited attention (Müller et al., 2014). This is at least partly due to the limited capability of most crop models which are typically restricted to predicting average grain size and protein or oil concentration (Martre et al., 2011). In this special issue Nuttall et al. (2017) review the current knowledge of the response on wheat grain functional properties to high temperature and elevated atmospheric CO 2 concentration. The authors also discuss how the capability of wheat crop models to consider quality aspects can be advanced and provide a conceptual framework to model the size distribution of gluten proteins and grain distribution using a single spike approach. The rise in global temperature is also a concern for sunflower quality. High oleic sunflower hybrids are increasingly grown worldwide as their higher content in unsaturated fatty acids compared with traditional hybrids increases the storage life of oil and because of the potent hypocholesterolemic effect of unsaturated fatty acids. However, the percentage of oleic acids in the oil decreases under warmer night temperatures (Aguirrezábal et al., 2014). Here, Angeloni et al. (2017) explored the response of sunflower phenol-ogy and seed oleic acid percentage to temperature for high oleic hybrids of sunflower grown in a network of field experiments in the argentine sunflower growing regions. The authors used these information to calibrate a sunflower model and to project the impact of a future global warming scenario on oil oleic percentage at different sites with different sowing dates. Their results provide important information to optimize the conditions to phenotype for high oleic percentage in both controlled and conditions field, and identifies traits on which breeders should focus to improve oil quality in the future. In summary, this special issue presents promising advances in modeling the improvement of crop species under climate change and future growing conditions. They represent significant efforts to reduce model uncertainty to improve confidence in using crop models in climate change impact studies to support the breeding of genotypes better adapted to future growing conditions. Much more research will be required and we hope that the publication of this special issue will catalyze more activities in this emerging research area.

Under rising temperature, the rate of any developmental process increased with temperature more rapidly than that of CO2 assimilation. We found that this discrepancy, summarised by the CO2 assimilation rate per unit of plant development, could explain the observed reductions in biomass accumulation in leaves and grain under high temperatures. This simple model describes the effects of night and day temperature equally well, and offers a simple framework for describing the effects of temperature on plant growth, without any supplementary effect of rising night temperatures., There is a growing consensus in the literature that rising temperatures influence the rates of biomass accumulation by shortening the development of plant organs and the whole plant and by altering the rates of respiration and photosynthesis. A model describing the net effects of these processes on biomass would be useful, but would need to reconcile reported differences in the effects of night and day temperature on plant productivity. In this study, the working hypothesis was that the temperature responses of CO2 assimilation and plant development rates were divergent, and that their net effects could explain observed differences in biomass accumulation. In wheat (Triticum aestivum) plants, we followed the temperature responses of photosynthesis, respiration and leaf elongation, and confirmed that their responses diverged. We measured the amount of carbon assimilated per ‘unit of plant development’ in each scenario and compared it to the biomass that accumulated in growing leaves and grains. Our results suggested that, up to a temperature optimum, the rate of any developmental process increased with temperature more rapidly than that of CO2 assimilation and that this discrepancy, summarised by the CO2 assimilation rate per unit of plant development, could explain the observed reductions in biomass accumulation in plant organs under high temperatures. The model described the effects of night and day temperature equally well, and offers a simple framework for describing the effects of temperature on plant growth.

Sous contrainte hydrique, les plantes limitent leur transpiration en diminuant leur croissance foliaire, économisant ainsi l’eau pour la fin du cycle de culture. Une forte variabilité génétique a été observée chez le maïs pour les processus impliqués dans cette réponse. Le compromis entre transpiration et photosynthèse implique qu’une forte plasticité n’est pas toujours avantageuse car elle diminue aussi l’accumulation de biomasse et le rendement. Un génotype qui maximise la production dans un environnement sec n’est donc pas le meilleur dans un autre environnement sec. Le but de cette thèse était de prédire quelles combinaisons de traits reliés à la croissance foliaire aboutissent aux meilleurs rendements dans différents environnements européens. Pour cela, (i) j’ai montré que les contrôles environnementaux et génétiques diffèrent entre l’élongation et l’élargissement foliaires, et établi/testé les équations décrivant ces contrôles. (ii) J’ai développé un modèle de croissance foliaire, en restant parcimonieux en paramètres et en veillant à ce que les paramètres soient mesurables en plateformes de phénotypage. (iii) J’ai développé un cadre de simulation qui inclut 36 ans de conditions climatiques et les pratiques agricoles dans 59 sites de culture du maïs en Europe, ainsi que la paramétré 254 hybrides de maïs qui maximisent la diversité génétique. (iv) Ce cadre d’analyse a été utilisé pour prédire la durée de cycle optimale dans chacun des environnements étudiés, sous les conditions climatiques présentes et futures. (v) J’ai utilisé le cadre de simulation et ces durées de cycle adaptées pour déterminer les meilleurs idéotypes de croissance foliaire adaptés aux différent scenarios environnementaux. Les résultats montrent que les variétés sensibles sont adaptées à l’Europe du sud en condition non-irriguées alors que l’opposé est adapté au nord ou en condition irriguée. A large genetic diversity has been observed in maize for the processes involved in this response. Because of the trade-off between transpiration and photosynthesis, a high plasticity is not always beneficial because it also reduces biomass accumulation and grain yield. The genotype that maximises production in one dry environment therefore does not always perform the best in another dry environment. The aim of this thesis was to predict which combination of trait values related to leaf growth would be beneficial in the diversity of European environments. For this purpose, (i) I have shown that genetic and environmental controls differ between leaf elongation and widening, and established/tested the equations that describe these controls. (ii) I have developed a model of leaf development and expansion, with a particular attention to the parsimony for parameter number and to the possibility of measuring parameter values in phenotyping platforms. (iii) I have developed a simulation framework including 36 years of environmental conditions and management practices of 59 European fields, together with the parameterisation of 254 maize hybrids maximising the maize genetic diversity. (iv) This framework has been used to simulate the optimum crop cycle duration for each site and management practice in current and future conditions. (v) The simulation framework and the adapted cycle duration were then used to determine ideotypes of leaf growth adapted to the different environmental scenarios. Results indicate that sensitive hybrids perform better in southern Europe under rainfed conditions while less-sensitive genotypes perform better in northern Europe or in irrigated fields. However, the best combinations of parameters determined in an unconstrained phenotypic space were not available in the observed genetic diversity. Overall, this study provides elements on where and when a combination of trait values can give a comparative advantage on yield, together with the boundary of possibilities within the current genetic diversity.

An important aspect that determines the ability of crop growth models to predict growth and yield is their ability to predict the rate of water consumption or evapotranspiration (ET) of the crop, especially for rain-fed crops. If, for example, the predicted ET rate is too high, the simulated crop may exhaust its soil water supply before the next rain event, thereby causing growth and yield predictions that are too low. In a prior inter-comparison among maize growth models, ET predictions varied widely, but no observations of actual ET were available for comparison. Therefore, another study has been initiated under the umbrella of AgMIP (Agricultural Model Inter-Comparison and Improvement Project). This time observations of ET using the eddy covariance technique from an 8-year-long experiment conducted at Ames, IA are being used as the standard. Simulation results from 29 models have been completed. In the first “blind” phase for which only weather, soils, and management information were furnished to the modelers, estimates of seasonal ET varied from about 200 to about 700 mm. A detailed statistical analysis of the daily ET data from 2011, a “typical” rainfall year, showed that, as expected, the median of all the models was more accurate across several criteria (correlation, root mean square error, average difference, regression slope) than any particular model. However, some individual models were better than the median for a particular criteria. Predictions improved somewhat in later stages when the modelers were provided additional leaf area and growth information that allowed them to “calibrate” some of the parameters in their models to account for varietal characteristics, etc.

Resumen: En un contexto de crisis y globalización económica son muchos los países que sufren tensiones, con regiones que reclaman autonomía para aplicar sus propias políticas económicas. El artículo trata de arrojar algo de luz sobre dicho debate analizando el caso de España. En primer lugar, y a través de un análisis clúster, comprobamos si existen diferencias entre las estructuras económicas de unas comunidades y otras. En segundo lugar, analizamos el patrón de crecimiento en los últimos 50 años, del grupo de regiones más estables. This paper attempts to shed some light on such debate by analyzing the case of Spain. First, through a cluster analysis, we review whether there are differences in the economic structures among some communities. Secondly, we analyze the growth pattern for the more stable regions during the last 50 years. In addition, we will depict the possible behavior in a medium-term future as long as no major changes occur, except for a technology catching-up process with leading world economic powers. These considerations will contribute to understand if regional differences can be justified from an economic point of view, or if a more homogeneous economic policy is necessary. This article analyzes the decline in living standards in the New Member States (NMSs) of the European Union after the financial crisis, in the light of their known trends in the past decade and their growth model. Living standards in the NMSs rose significantly during the past ten years. In particular, Bulgaria, Romania, and the three Baltic countries converged swiftly toward the EU average. However, these five countries are also the NMSs that have “ deconverged ” most sharply since the crisis, owing to the prior accumulation of macroeconomic imbalances. This should encourage them to adopt more balanced growth strategies., Cet article analyse le recul des niveaux de vie enregistrés par les nouveaux États membres (NEM) de l’Union européenne suite à la crise financière, à la lumière des évolutions connues au cours des dix dernières années et de leur modèle de croissance. La typologie et la cartographie des stations forestières sont basées sur le principe suivant : « Une étendue de forêt, homogène dans ses conditions écologiques et son peuplement, dans laquelle le forestier peut pratiquer la même sylviculture et peut espérer une même production ». Ce concept de station forestière, ainsi défini est donc très proche du concept écologique, mais on y a ajouté l'idée d'homogénéité du peuplement et d'un concept de gestion : espérance d'une même production, pratique d'un même traitement sylvicole. Ainsi et afin de réaliser ce travail, nous avons en premier lieu établi une série de cartes thématiques. L’utilisation de l’imagerie satellitaire (Land SAT, 2009) ; nous à permis l’élaboration de la carte des groupements forestiers. Le modèle numérique de terrain (MNT) permet la création des cartes suivantes : la carte hypsométrique, la carte des pentes et la carte d’exposition. Un croisement entre les différentes couches d’informations par le biais d’un système d’information géographique (SIG) ; permet l’identification de 83 stations forestières, plus ou moins homogènes et géo-référenciés. En seconde lieu nous avons essayé d’établir les relations entre les types de stations et les modèles de croissance à travers l’étude de quelques paramètres dendrométriques (hauteur, diamètre, surface terrière et volume). Le but final de ce travail est de proposer une nouvelle vision de gestion forestière basée sur le découpage de l’espace forestier en zone homo- écologique et l’utilisation des stations forestières comme les futures unités de gestion forestières. Abstract The typology and mapping forest sites are based on the following principle: "An expanse of forest, homogeneous in its ecological conditions and its settlement, in which the forest can practice even forestry and can expect the same production. This concept of forest site, so defined is thus very close to the ecological concept, but added the idea of homogeneity of the population and a management concept: hope for the same production, practice the same silvicultural treatment . Thus and in order to complete this work, we first established a series of thematic maps. The use of satellite imagery (SAT Land, 2009), enabled us to develop the map of forest communities. The digital terrain model (DTM) allows the creation of the following maps: the contour map, the slope map and the map display. A cross between the different layers of information through a geographic information system (GIS) allows the identification of 83 forest sites, more or less homogeneous and geo-referenced. In second place we tried to establish relations between site types and growth patterns through the study of some parameters dendrometric (height, diameter, basal area and volume). The ultimate goal of this work is to propose a new vision of forest management based on the division of space in forest area homo-ecological and use of forest resorts such as future forest management units. We compare 27 wheat models' yield responses to interannual climate variability, analyzed at locations in Argentina, Australia, India, and The Netherlands as part of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) Wheat Pilot. Each model simulated 1981-2010 grain yield, and we evaluate results against the interannual variability of growing season temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation. The amount of information used for calibration has only a minor effect on most models' climate response, and even small multi-model ensembles prove beneficial. Wheat model clusters reveal common characteristics of yield response to climate; however models rarely share the same cluster at all four sites indicating substantial independence. Only a weak relationship (R2???0.24) was found between the models' sensitivities to interannual temperature variability and their response to long-term warming, suggesting that additional processes differentiate climate change impacts from observed climate variability analogs and motivating continuing analysis and model development efforts. Ce numéro de la revue Fourrages présente les résultats des travaux du projet Climagie du métaprogramme Adaptation au changement climatique de l'agriculture et de la forêt (ACCAF) de l'Inra; Les modélisateurs ont progressé dans la façon de simuler l'évolution de la production de fourrage au cours de l'exploitation de la prairie, en utilisant de nouveaux modèles numériques basés sur les réponses individuelles des composantes de la prairie aux variables du microclimat, notamment la température, l'eau et le rayonnement. Ces modèles individu-centrés permettent de simuler l'état et la croissance des talles et des ramifications individuelles pour la plupart des types de graminées et de légumineuses fourragères. Virtual Grassland est un modèle qui associe ainsi plusieurs espèces composant une prairie semée multispécifique et permettra de prendre en compte la variabilité intra-spécifique. Au-delà des cycles successifs de production végétative, et sur la base de modèles de céréales, ces nouveaux modèles simulent aussi la production individuelle de graines des plantes. Le couplage avec des approches de génétique quantitative appliquées aux caractères fonctionnels des plantes, permet de relier le fonctionnement écophysiologique du peuplement à la composition génétique de la génération suivante. Ces progrès ouvrent des perspectives d'applications en sélection et dans la rationalisation des mélanges variétaux préconisés pour les prairies semées pour adapter ces cultures au changement climatique.

The models about plant growth developped until date generally take into account the light availability, nutrients and water as the main factors affecting this metabolic function. Numerous studies since the 70s suggests that the wind can also have significant effects on growth. This phenomenon is called thigmomorphogenesis and is an acclimation mechanism of the plant to the wind it undergoes during its life. This study is a first approach for a better understanding of thigmomorphogenesis in maritime pine, in order to integrate the wind factor in growth modelling of this species, which has a special economic importance in Aquitaine. Initially, we wanted to test the hypothesis that individuals submitted to strong wind would respond with an increase in the radial growth of their trunks compared to the less exposed individuals. In parallel, we decided to explore the response in trunk flexion to wind stress. The results have failed to show a clear effect of wind on the radial growth of the maritime pine trunk, but the maintenance of the experience on the longer term is expected to bring satisfactory results. Exploration of developmental mechanisms classically relies on analysis of pattern regularities. Whether disorders induced by biological noise may carry information on building principles of developmental systems is an important debated question. Here, we addressed theoretically this question using phyllotaxis, the geometric arrangement of plant aerial organs, as a model system. Phyllotaxis arises from reiterative organogenesis driven by lateral inhibitions at the shoot apex. Motivated by recurrent observations of disorders in phyllotaxis patterns, we revisited in depth the classical deterministic view of phyllotaxis. We developed a stochastic model of primordia initiation at the shoot apex, integrating locality and stochasticity in the patterning system. This stochastic model recapitulates phyllotactic patterns, both regular and irregular, and makes quantitative predictions on the nature of disorders arising from noise. We further show that disorders in phyllotaxis instruct us on the parameters governing phyllotaxis dynamics, thus that disorders can reveal biological watermarks of developmental systems. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.14093.001, eLife digest Plants grow throughout their lifetime, forming new flowers and leaves at the tips of their stems through a patterning process called phyllotaxis, which occurs in spirals for a vast number of plant species. The classical view suggests that the positioning of each new leaf or flower bud at the tip of a growing stem is based on a small set of principles. This includes the idea that buds produce inhibitory signals that prevent other buds from forming too close to each other. When computational models of phyllotaxis follow these ‘deterministic’ principles, they are able to recreate the spiral pattern the buds form on a growing stem. In real plants, however, the spiral pattern is not always perfect. The observed disturbances in the pattern are believed to reflect the presence of random fluctuations – regarded as noise – in phyllotaxis. Here, using numerical simulations, Refahi et al. noticed that the patterns of inhibitory signals in a shoot tip pre-determine the locations of several competing sites where buds could form in a robust manner. However, random fluctuations in the way cells perceive these inhibitory signals could greatly disturb the timing of organ formation and affect phyllotaxis patterns. Building on this, Refahi et al. created a new computational model of bud patterning that takes into account some randomness in how cells perceive the inhibitory signals released by existing buds. The model can accurately recreate the classical spiral patterns of buds and also produces occasional disrupted patterns that are similar to those seen in real plants. Unexpectedly, Refahi et al. show that these ‘errors’ reveal key information about how the signals that control phyllotaxis might work. These findings open up new avenues of research into the role of noise in phyllotaxis. The model can be used to predict how altering the activities of genes or varying plant growth conditions might disturb this patterning process. This work deals with the growth and characterization of silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge) nanowires. The nanowires were synthesized by the growth mechanism VLS (Vapor Liquid Solid) in a LPCVD reactor (Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition) using gold (Au) as the catalyst and silane (SiH4) and germane (GeH4) as precursor gas. In order to grow nanowires, the Au catalyst must be nano-structured in the form of nano-particles with controlled diameter if possible. This is done in this study by “dewetting” of a continuous layer evaporated on the chosen substrate. The thickness of this initial continuous layer is an essential parameter in the study. A preliminary part of this work deals with the problem of how the “dewetting” occurs, depending on various parameters (type of substrate, temperature, pressure, thickness of the continuous gold layer, growth duration and “dewetting” temperature) that control the LPCVD growth process. We varied these process parameters over wide ranges to determine how the influence the properties of Ge nanowires grown. The structural characterization of nanowires by transmission electron microscopy shows their single crystal structure with growth direction along in the case of Si nanowires and along for Ge nanowires. Finally, in the case of conical Ge nanowires isolated and deposited on different substrates, the micro-Raman analysis allowed us identifies an optical resonance phenomenon inside the nanowires which strongly depends on their local diameter. The Raman intensity increases with the decrease of volume excited. These effects are explained by the optical modes appearing according to the local diameter of the nanowire, the excitation wavelength and the nature of the substrate used. In addition, the Raman lines recorded along the same profiles did not show any spectral shift, reinforcing the idea that the behavior of their intensity has to be related to resonances associated with the development of local optical modes. These effects were observed to be dependent upon the type of substrate on which the isolated nanowires were transferred (dielectric versus metallic substrates). Les nanofils ont été synthétisés par le mécanisme VLS (Vapeur Liquide Solide) dans un réacteur LPCVD (Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition), en utilisant l'or (Au) comme catalyseur et le silane (SiH4) ou le germane (GeH4) comme gaz précurseur. Pour que ce procédé de croissance conduise à l'obtention de nanofils, le catalyseur Au doit être nano-structuré sous la forme de nanoparticules de diamètre si possible contrôlé. Ceci est fait dans cette étude par « démouillage » d'une couche continue déposée initialement par effet Joule sur le substrat choisi. L'épaisseur de cette couche continue initiale est un paramètre essentiel dans l'étude. Une partie préliminaire de ce travail a concerné l'étude de la façon dont se démouillage s'effectue, en fonction des divers paramètres. Nous avons ensuite effectué une étude exhaustive du rôle de tous les paramètres (nature du substrat, température, pression, épaisseur de la couche continue d'or, temps de croissance, durée et température de démouillage) qui contrôlent le procédé de croissance LPCVD sur les caractéristiques des nanofils de Ge notamment. Nous avons fait varier ces paramètres dans de larges fenêtres de valeurs afin de maîtriser et contrôler leur croissance. La caractérisation structurale des nanofils par microscopie électronique en transmission montre leur structure monocristalline avec une direction de croissance pour les nanofils de Si et pour les nanofils de Ge. Enfin, dans le cas des nanofils de Ge coniques isolés et déposés sur différents substrat, l'analyse micro-Raman nous a permis de mettre en évidence un phénomène de résonance optique à l'intérieur du nanofils et qui dépend fortement du diamètre local du nanofil. L'intensité Raman augmente avec la diminution du volume excité. Ces effets sont expliqués par les modes optiques apparaissant selon le diamètre local du nanofil, la longueur d'onde d'excitation et la nature du substrat utilisé. En plus, Le profil de la fréquence obtenu a montré qu'aucune anomalie particulière n'est observée. Ces profils obtenus en fonction du substrat et de la longueur d'onde utilisés sur différents nanofils montrent une faible variation de la fréquence. Le profil de la largeur à mi-hauteur est constant. Ces résultats montrent l'absence des effets de confinement de modes de phonons dans les nanofils individuels caractérisés.

Monitoring crop condition and production estimates at the state and county level is of great interest to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducts field interviews with sampled farm operators and obtains crop cuttings to make crop yield estimates at regional and state levels. NASS needs supplemental spatial data that provides timely information on crop condition and potential yields. In this research, the crop model EPIC (Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator) was adapted for simulations at regional scales. Satellite remotely sensed data provide a real-time assessment of the magnitude and variation of crop condition parameters, and this study investigates the use of these parameters as an input to a crop growth model. This investigation was conducted in the semi-arid region of North Dakota in the southeastern part of the state. The primary objective was to evaluate a method of integrating parameters. retrieved from satellite imagery in a crop growth model to simulate spring wheat yields at the sub-county and county levels. The input parameters derived from remotely sensed data provided spatial integrity, as well as a real-time calibration of model simulated parameters during the season, to ensure that the modeled and observed conditions agree. A radiative transfer model, SAIL (Scattered by Arbitrary Inclined Leaves), provided the link between the satellite data and crop model. The model parameters were simulated in a geographic information system grid, which was the platform for aggregating yields at local and regional scales. A model calibration was performed to initialize the model parameters. This calibration was performed using Landsat data over three southeast counties in North Dakota. The model was then used to simulate crop yields for the state of North Dakota with inputs derived from NOAA AVHRR data. The calibration and the state level simulations are compared with spring wheat yields reported by NASS objective yield surveys.

En Afrique de l’Ouest, l’igname est traditionnellement une culture itinérante, installée après défriche-brûlis d’une jachère longue. L’état actuel des connaissances sur le fonctionnement de la culture est insuffisant pour permettre d’élaborer des alternatives durables à ce mode de conduite pénalisant pour l’environnement. Des études récentes montrent que la variabilité du rendement entre plantes d’une même parcelle constitue un verrou majeur à l’amélioration de la culture d’igname. Actuellement, la cause de cette variabilité reste inexpliquée et freine les tentatives d’intensification des systèmes de culture. Dans ce contexte, l'objectif de la thèse était d’étudier la variabilité interplante des deux espèces majeures d’igname en Afrique de l’Ouest (Dioscorea alata et D. rotundata), et plus particulièrement : de la quantifier, d’en identifier les causes et d’en estimer les conséquences physiologiques, agronomiques, et économiques. Une série de 11 expérimentations menées de 2006 à 2009 sur deux sites au Bénin nous a permis de démontrer que la variabilité de rendement entre plantes d’igname était nettement supérieure à celle des autres cultures à tubercules, telles que la pomme de terre (CV > 40% et CV < 20%, respectivement) et s’exprimait dès les premiers stades de croissance. Les causes de cette variabilité ont été identifiées et leurs effets directs et indirects ont été quantifiés en utilisant un modèle graphique de type réseau bayésien. Ces résultats montrent qu’aux densités de plantations traditionnelles en Afrique de l’Ouest (0,4 à 1 plante m-²), il n’y a pas de compétition entre plantes. En revanche, le matériel de plantation utilisé introduit une forte variabilité initiale entre individus via la taille des semenceaux et la date d’émergence. Nous avons mis au point un modèle à l’échelle de la plante permettant de simuler la croissance de l’igname en fonction des facteurs responsables de la variabilité du rendement, et son développement en fonction de la photopériode et de la température. Le modèle prédit bien les rendements individuels observés. Les observations ainsi que les prédictions montrent clairement que les plantes émergées plus tardivement, ou issues de semenceaux de faible qualité, auront une croissance ralentie, une tubérisation initiée trop rapidement et finalement, un rendement plus faible. En comparaison avec l’utilisation d’un matériel de plantation théorique, plus homogène, calqué sur celui de la pomme de terre, ces pertes sont estimées, en moyenne, à 22 et 27% du rendement pour D. alata et D. rotundata respectivement. En tenant compte du prix de vente saisonnier et du coût des semenceaux, cette perte de rendement se traduit par une réduction du profit de l’agriculteur de 30 et 40%, respectivement. Pour la culture d’igname en Afrique de l’Ouest, les conséquences agronomiques et économiques de la variabilité de la croissance et du développement entre plantes d’une même parcelle, plaident en faveur du développement d’une filière de production de semenceaux de qualité., In West Africa, shifting cultivation using the slash and burn technique is the traditional yam cropping system. Current knowledge is insufficient to elaborate and recommend sustainable alternatives to this cropping system, which threatens the environment. Recent studies have shown unexplained interplant yield variability to be an important brake on the improvement of yam production system that hinders intensification attempts. In this context, the objective of the thesis was to study yield interplant variability of the two main yam species (Dioscorea alata and D. rotundata) and more specifically to quantify this variability, to identify its causes and to estimate its physiological, agronomic and economic consequences. A set of 11 experiments carried out between 2006 and 2009 at two locations in Benin, enabled us to demonstrate that interplant variability of yam yield is much higher than that of similar tuber crops, such as potato (CV > 40% and CV < 20%, respectively) and that it appears at an early growth stage. Causes of this variability were identified and their direct and indirect effects were quantified using a Bayesian network. At common planting densities (0.4-1 plants m-²), these results showed that there was no competition between plants. In contrast, the use of traditional planting material introduced important initial variability between individual plants, especially in the observed emergence date and seed-tuber weight. We developed a plant model to simulate yam growth as a function of factors affecting yield variability and yam development as a function of daily photoperiod and temperature. The model gives good estimates of observed plant yield. Observations and simulations both demonstrate that delayed emergence and lower seed-tuber quality (lower weight) lead to a slower vegetative growth, unduly early tuber initiation and finally a lower yield. In comparison with the use of a theoretical planting material based on the potato, the use of traditional planting material resulted in a 22 and 27% yield loss for D. alata and D. rotundata respectively. Taking into account the seasonal selling price of the crop and the cost of the seed tubers, the yield loss represents a decrease of 30 and 40% in profit for the producer. Agronomic and economic consequences of the interplant yield variability would suggest the development of a quality seed-tuber production system to the benefit of yam cropping in West Africa.

The extent to which wood growth is limited by carbon (C) supply (i.e. source control) or by cambial activity (i.e. sink control) will strongly determine the responses of trees to global changes. Nevertheless, the physiological processes that are responsible for limiting forest growth are still a matter of debate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the key determinants of the annual C allocation to wood along large soil and climate regional gradients over France. The study was conducted for five tree species representative of the main European forest biomes (Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, Quercus ilex, Quercus robur and Picea abies). The drivers of stand biomass growth were assessed on both inter-site and inter-annual scales. Our data set comprised field measurements performed at 49 sites (931 site-years) that included biometric measurements and a variety of stand characteristics (e.g. soil water holding capacity, leaf area index). It was complemented with process-based simulations when possible explanatory variables could not be directly measured (e.g. annual and seasonal tree C balance, bioclimatic water stress indices). Specifically, the relative influences of tree C balance (source control), direct environmental control (water and temperature controls of sink activity) and allocation adjustments related to age, past climate conditions, competition intensity and soil nutrient availability on growth were quantified. The inter-site variability in the stand C allocation to wood was predominantly driven by age-related decline. The direct effects of temperature and water stress on sink activity (i.e. effects independent from their effects on the C supply) exerted a strong influence on the annual stand wood growth in all of the species considered, including deciduous temperate species. The lagged effect of the past environmental conditions (e.g. the previous year's water stress and low C uptake) significantly affected the annual C allocation to wood. The C supply appeared to strongly limit growth only in temperate deciduous species. We provide an evaluation of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the annual C allocation to wood in French forests. Our study supports the premise that the growth of European tree species is subject to complex control processes that include both source and sink limitations. The relative influences of the growth drivers strongly vary with time and across spatial ecological gradients. We suggest a straightforward modelling framework with which to implement these combined forest growth limitations into terrestrial biosphere models

Highlight A global uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the process-based model SiriusQuality2 was carried out to quantify the relationship between simple morpho-physiological traits and grain yield and protein concentration for wheat., Genetic improvement of grain yield (GY) and grain protein concentration (GPC) is impeded by large genotype×environment×management interactions and by compensatory effects between traits. Here global uncertainty and sensitivity analyses of the process-based wheat model SiriusQuality2 were conducted with the aim of identifying candidate traits to increase GY and GPC. Three contrasted European sites were selected and simulations were performed using long-term weather data and two nitrogen (N) treatments in order to quantify the effect of parameter uncertainty on GY and GPC under variable environments. The overall influence of all 75 plant parameters of SiriusQuality2 was first analysed using the Morris method. Forty-one influential parameters were identified and their individual (first-order) and total effects on the model outputs were investigated using the extended Fourier amplitude sensitivity test. The overall effect of the parameters was dominated by their interactions with other parameters. Under high N supply, a few influential parameters with respect to GY were identified (e.g. radiation use efficiency, potential duration of grain filling, and phyllochron). However, under low N, >10 parameters showed similar effects on GY and GPC. All parameters had opposite effects on GY and GPC, but leaf and stem N storage capacity appeared as good candidate traits to change the intercept of the negative relationship between GY and GPC. This study provides a system analysis of traits determining GY and GPC under variable environments and delivers valuable information to prioritize model development and experimental work.

Microalgae are more and more studied for their energy potential and various applications. However, the actual production processes (open and closed photobioreactor) use a lot of energy and aren't productive enough. This thesis presents a novel process of microalgae culture, with an airlift system coupled to a thin plate. The photobioreactor is experimentally characterized and modeled for many aspects. Hydrodynamics of the system is modeled to predict the fluid behavior in the system. Mass transfers are modeled using the two film model. The model allows knowing minimum carbon needs for microalgae culture. It also allows evaluating dissolved oxygen concentration in the photobioreactor and its elimination efficiency. Oxygen is inhibiting the culture at high concentration. Heat transfers are also modeled, allowing to know climate parameters impact (sunshine, ambient air temperature) on culture temperature. All models are assembled in a global model. This model is compared to microalgae culture experimental results. Finally, the global model is used to study a more complex system: culture thin plates are integrated on the walls of buildings. Global model allow studying different orientation effects on temperature and productivity of the system. Culture is optimized for energy consumption and some perspectives on energy integration of such a system are proposed.; Les microalgues sont de plus en plus regardées pour leurs potentiels énergétiques et leurs nombreuses applications. Mais les systèmes de production actuels, que se soit les systèmes dits ouvert comme les bassins ou les systèmes fermés, appelés photobioréacteurs, sont très énergivores et pas assez productifs. Cette thèse propose un nouveau concept de photobioréacteur, composé d'un airlift et d'une plaque mince. Le photobioréacteur est caractérisé expérimentalement et est modélisé sous plusieurs aspects. L'hydrodynamique du système est modélisée pour prédire le comportement des fluides dans le système. Les phénomènes de transferts de masse sont modélisés par le modèle des deux films. La modélisation permet de connaitre l'apport minimum nécessaire en dioxyde de carbone pour la culture des microalgues et permet d'évaluer la concentration en oxygène dissous dans le photobioréacteur. Elle permet aussi d'évaluer son élimination par le système, l'oxygène étant inhibant pour la culture. Les phénomènes de transferts de chaleur sont aussi modélisés, permettant de connaitre l'impact des différents paramètres (ensoleillement, température de l'air ambiant) sur la température de culture. Ces différents modèles sont rassemblés en un modèle global qui est comparé aux résultats expérimentaux de culture d'algues. Le modèle global est ensuite utilisé dans un contexte plus complexe : l'intégration des plaques minces du photobioréacteur aux parois d'un bâtiment. Le modèle global permettra d'étudier l'effet les différentes orientations (Nord, Sud, Est, Ouest en vertical sur les façades et à l'horizontal sur les toits) sur les températures et productivité du système. La consommation d'énergie de la culture est optimisée grâce au modèle. A la suite de cette optimisation, certaines perspectives sur l'intégration énergétique d'un tel système sont proposées.

To minimize the production costs of sugar cane, for the diverse sites of production found in La Réunion, an improved understanding of the influence of temperature on the dry matter radiation quotient is required. Existing models simulate poorly the temperature-radiation interaction. A model of sugar cane growth has been fitted to the results from two contrasting sites (mean temperatures: 14-30 °C; total radiation: 10-25 MJ.m-2.d-1) on a ratoon crop of cv R570, under conditions of non-limiting resources. Radiation interception, aerial biomass, the fraction of millable stems, and their moisture content, were measured. The time-courses of the efficiency of radiation interception differed between sites. As a function of the sum of day-degrees, they were similar. The dry matter radiation quotient was related to temperature. The moisture content of millable stems depended on the day-degree sum. On the other hand, the leaf/stem ratio was independent of temperature. The relationships established enabled the construction of a simple model of yield potential. Applied to a set of sites representing the sugar cane growing area of La Réunion, it gave a good prediction of maximum yields. Le facteur de conversion du rayonnement intercepté en biomasse dépend de la température. L’humidité des tiges usinables est déterminée par la somme des degré-jour. En revanche, le rapport feuilles/tiges est indépendant de la température. Les relations établies permettent de construire un modèle de potentiel simple. An adaptation of the von Bertalanffy growth model is formulated to describe the phenotypic plasticity of fish somatic growth in relation to trophic conditions. The model is developed for the North sea Downs herring (Clupea harengus). II suggests that annual growth variability during 1974-1990 was mainly due to the combined effects of herring abundance and wind-induced turbulence (coincident with the spring stratification of the water column). Springtime turbulences cause reduced and delayed planktonic blooms preceding the annual foraging period of Downs herring. The negative relation observed between herring abundance and growth is hypothesized to be due to intra-specific competition for trophic resources. Incorporated into the calculation of yield per recruit, the established growth model provides slightly more optimistic diagnoses while dropping the classic assumption of constant weight at age. (C) Ifremer/Elsevier, Paris., Une adaptation du modèle de croissance de Von Bertalanffy est proposée afin d'exprimer une plasticité phénotypique de la croissance somatique des poissons en fonction des conditions trophiques. Le modèle est développé sur l'exemple du hareng des Downs en mer du Nord (Clupea harengus). Sur la période 1974–1990, l'ajustement du modèle suggère que la variabilité interannuelle de croissance en longueur est principalement due à l'action conjointe de deux facteurs: la croissance est reliée négativement à l'abondance des harengs et à la turbulence due au vent (contemporaine de la stratification printanière de la colonne d'eau). Des turbulences trop importantes sont en effet supposées diminuer et retarder le pic du bloom planctonique précédant la phase annuelle de nutrition des harengs. En outre, la relation négative entre l'abondance des harengs et leur croissance est interprétée comme une conséquence de la compétition intraspécifique pour les ressources trophiques. Des simulations de rendement par recrue à partir du modèle de croissance proposé montrent que la prise en compte d'une croissance dépendant de la densité fournit des diagnostics légèrement plus optimistes.

In this paper, is described the law of métropolisation as a model of growth, produced from an harmonized data base about towns and cities in the world ;the measures concern 25 000 agglomerations (42,5% of the world population - 2,27 milliard of inhabitants) taken at five different periods (1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990). Two main results are given. In the one hand, results and answers to the questions of the urban growth are presented. On the other hand, it shows the interest of an inductive method (from fact to the law). The accumulated and complete data gathered at the world scale and identifying all the possible space levels, even within the smallest (200 m more or less) allow to hold the two links which, in the long length duration, seem to resist to the disorders of history and geography, the local and the global., Ce papier décrit la loi de la métropolisation comme un modèle de croissance produit à partir d'une base de données harmonisées et tendant à l'exhaustivité. L’article traite des indices de concurrence du Moabi dans un environnement compétitif avec les arbres voisins. L’objet de cette étude est la maîtrise des variables de compétition qui décrivent le mieux la trajectoire de croissance du Moabi en peuplement hétérogène. Le dispositif expérimental utilisé est constitué de placettes semi permanentes circulaires de 20 m de rayon centrées sur chacun des 60 arbres des 79 arbres de Moabi étudiés et mis en place par la Société Pallisco depuis 2008 (Doucet et al., 2012). Seul l’indice de concurrence STTr/Dist est la variable qui explique le mieux l’accroissement en diamètre (R²=25,50) et l’accroissement en surface terrière (R²=20,00) de manière soutenue. D, ID, NVD, NVT, STT sont les variables les plus proche du cercle de corrélation, donc explique le mieux la variabilité de la croissance du Moabi. La combinaison prédisant le mieux l’accroissement diamétrique du Moabi comporte trois variables (deux indices indépendants des distances (NVD, NVT) et un indice dépendant des distances (SDHP/dist)) avec un AIC de 83,51. Il ressort de cette analyse qu’au-delà des indices de concurrence indépendants et dépendants de la distance, il y a également des variables de prédiction de la croissance telles que le diamètre (D) et l’indice d’éclairement du houppier (ID) qui peuvent rentrer dans l’élaboration d’un modèle prédictif efficient de l’accroissement en diamètre et en surface terrière du Moabi.
