Metal organic frameworks(MOFs) is a new type of crystalline porous material, which has the characteristics of high surface area, high porosity and low synthesis cost. MOFs have been widely used in the field of catalysis due to its unique porous structure and discrete active centers. Firstly, the types and synthesis methods of common MOFs are introduced, and the characteristics of different synthesis methods are summarized. Then, the latest research progress of MOFs as photocatalysts for the efficient removal of heavy metals, dyes, and antibiotics in wastewater is reviewed. The photocatalysis of MOFs and composite materials on different pollutants, reaction efficiency, and various experimental conditions are performed. Finally, the prospects and challenges of MOFs as photocatalysis in wastewater treatment are discussed.

Asphaltene precipitation is a crucial phase separation phenomenon in the oil industry, especially in paraffinic froth treatment to extract bitumen from oil sands ores. This work reveals the formation of particles at 0.2 to 0.4 um in radius, defined as a primary sub-micron particle (PSMP), which is ubiquitous from diffusive mixing between asphaltene solution and any of 23 types of precipitants examined in our experiments. The yield and quantity of asphaltene particles are affected not only by the Hildebrand solubility parameter of the precipitants but also by the diffusion coefficients of the asphaltene solution and the precipitant. The Population Balance Model (PBM) with the Hildebrand solubility parameter has been used to model particle size distribution. Good agreement has been achieved between numerical predictions and the experimental data. It indicates that the colloid theory can describe the size distribution of PSMP and larger aggregates. Therefore, this study provides new insight into the mechanism for the dependence of yield and size distribution of the precipitated asphaltene particles on the composition of precipitants and adding inhibitors. An efficient one-pot synthesis of 1-(4-bromophenyl)-1 H-tetrazol-5-amine was performed using 4-bromoaniline as the starting material. A novel and widely applicable amidation procedure was then employed, whereby 1-(4-bromophenyl)-1 H-tetrazol-5-amine was acylated with different acyl chlorides in the presence of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide as catalyst, for the high-yield synthesis of [1-(4-bromophenyl)-1 H-tetrazol-5-yl]amide derivatives.

The emergence of drug resistance in bacterial pathogens is a growing clinical problem that poses difficult challenges in patient management. To exacerbate this problem, there is currently a serious lack of antibacterial agents that are designed to target extremely drug-resistant bacterial strains. Here we describe the design, synthesis and antibacterial testing of a series of 40 novel indole core derivatives, which are predicated by molecular modeling to be potential glycosyltransferase inhibitors. Twenty of these derivatives were found to show in vitro inhibition of Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Four of these strains showed additional activity against Gram-negative bacteria, including extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae, imipenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumanii, and against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra. These four compounds are candidates for developing into broad-spectrum anti-infective agents.

The relationship between the piezoelectric properties and the structure/microstructure for 0.05Bi(Mg2/3Nb1/3)O3-(0.95-x)BaTiO3-xBiFeO3 (BBFT, x = 0.55, 0.60, 0.63, 0.65, 0.70, and 0.75) ceramics has been investigated. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a homogeneous microstructure for x < 0.75 but there was evidence of a core-shell cation distribution for x = 0.75 which could be suppressed in part through quenching from the sintering temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD) suggested a gradual structural transition from pseudocubic to rhombohedral for 0.63

Ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) is a 2-state non-volatile memory, in which information is digitally encoded using switchable remanent polarization states within a ferroelectric thin film capacitor. Here we propose a novel nonvolatile memory based on anti-ferroelectric polycrystalline ceramics, termed anti-ferroelectric random access memory (AFRAM). The AFRAM memory cell architecture is similar to FRAM, but it requires a more complex operation protocol. Our initial experimental demonstration of the memory effect in antiferroelectric ceramic shows, remarkably, that the AFRAM technology encodes data in both ferroelectric sublattices of the anti-ferroelectric medium. This results in a 4-state non-volatile memory capable of storing 2 digital bits simultaneously, unlike the FRAM technology that has 2-memory states and it is capable to store 1 digital bit per cell.

High purity alpha-titanium bicrystals were prepared using a strain-annealing method after refining twice in a vacuum electric are furnace and then growing crystals three times in a vacuum floating zone melting furnace. Reverse push-pull cycling tests were performed on bicrystals with grain boundaries oriented at about 90 degrees, 70 degrees and 35 degrees to the stress axis. The cyclic stress-strain curves of bicrystals were determined by a multiple-step test method. The position of the cyclic stress-strain curves has no direct dependence on the angle between the grain boundary plane and the stress axis. { }, { }, { } and { } types of twinning occurred during cycling. Grain boundaries sliding was observed in the specimen whose grain boundary plane is about 35 degrees inclined to the stress axis. Bunched slip bands in a braid-like pattern were observed. Fatigue cracks initiated along slip bands and grain boundaries owing to grain boundary extrusion or grain boundary sliding.

A special high-purity titanium single crystal was prepared to study the effect of loading mode on deformation microstructure. Six rectangularly sectioned specimens were cut from the same single crystal. The loading axis of the specimens was parallel to the C-axis of the crystal, and the wide surface was parallel to the prism plane {10 1 &}, with the narrow surface {1 2 10}. Mechanical tests were conducted within the chamber of a scanning electron microscope JSM35C using a specially designed apparatus with closed-loop computer control. Five loading modes were used: monotonic tension, tension-tension fatigue, and tension-compression fatigue with three different stress amplitudes. The surface appearance of the specimens was registered with SEM periodically, and the cyclic twins as well as persistent slip bands were identified using trace analysis technique. The substructures of the tested specimens were examined with a transmission electron microscope on foils cut from the specimens parallel to the wide surface. The dislocation structures of specimens tested in different modes were observed, and the slip systems and twinning modes for each case are discussed.
