This study systematically and comprehensively analysed 129 thumb polydactylies in 122 patients using a duplicating range concept based on the level of skin and skeletal bifurcation. Numerical levels were defined along the longitudinal axis of the ulnar thumb duplicate from distal to proximal: level 0 (thumb tip) to level 6 (carpometacarpal joint). The relationships between duplication range and morphological parameters were evaluated. Nail asymmetry was associated with skin bifurcation levels 0 to 2. Proximal phalangeal asymmetry and interphalangeal joint deviation, associated with skin bifurcation levels were assigned scores of 1 to 2.5 and 1 to 2, respectively. Metacarpophalangeal joint deviation had a bimodal distribution, at levels 1.5 and 4 of the longitudinal axes. Morphological similarity was found in patients with the same duplication range. The duplication range concept could potentially improve our understanding of morphology variation and predicting prognoses in thumb polydactyly. Level of evidence: III

Introduction: Diagnostic imaging modalities to evaluate the three-dimensional distribution of thoracodorsal artery perforators (TDAPs) are lacking. In this study, TDAPs were visualized and characterized using photoacoustic imaging. Material and methods: In this study, 34 sites in the lateral chest wall of 18 individuals were analyzed. The region extending 5 cm ventral and 5 cm dorsal to the lateral edge of the latissimus dorsi (LD) and 5–15 cm from the posterior axillary fold was scanned using photoacoustic imaging. The largest perforator closest to the edge of the LD was characterized. The location of the stem portion and the orientation of the longest cutaneous branch of the perforator were described. The relationship between the maximal depth of delineation on photoacoustic images and the depth of the deep fascia was assessed. Results: On average, 2.6 perforators (range, 1–5 perforators) were visualized in the region of interest. The distribution of the TDAP stem portion was similar to that in previous studies. Cutaneous branches were preferentially oriented in a medial-caudal direction. The length of delineated cutaneous branches varied (range, 7–78 mm) depending on the thickness of the subcutaneous layer. Vessels under the LD were observed when the subcutaneous layer was thin. Conclusion: Photoacoustic imaging can successfully visualize TDAPs in three dimensions. Visualization of TDAPs varied by the thickness of the subcutaneous layer. A thin deep fascia of the LD might be a cause of deep laser penetration.

To accelerate development and improve the quality of car navigation systems, we have built a system for automatic generation of evaluation courses. In general, the operation of car navigation systems is verified by driving tests using vehicles. The evaluation courses need to be designed so that inspection sites, such as underground parking lots, tunnels, etc., will be visited during the evaluation period. They should be circuits that include as many inspection sites as possible within a defined distance. However, as the number of the inspection sites increases, the number of courses that can be designed becomes enormous. This makes it difficult to create courses that meet all of the requirements. Hence engineers have spent a lot of time on evaluation course design. For this reason, automatic course generation has become essential for reducing man-hours. We believe that one of the effective approaches is to treat automatic evaluation course generation as a combinatorial optimization problem. In our formulation, inspection sites are grouped into clusters according to the required number of courses, and the shortest circuit is constructed in each cluster.Then, we treat the clustering and shortest circuit generation problems separately as a bi-level combinatorial optimization problem. In other words, the original problem is divided into smaller parts of the combinatorial optimization problems. We then propose a Markov chain Monte Carlo method for solving the bi-level optimization problem, and construct a system for automatic generation of evaluation courses. The proposed method significantly reduces course-design time compared to manual course construction.

Regenerative medicine products using allogeneic cells, such as allogeneic cultured epidermis (allo-CE), have become a more critical therapeutic method for the treatment of burns. However, there are no clinically available allo-CE products in Japan. Therefore, establishing a quality-controlled cell bank is mandatory to create regenerative medical products using allogeneic cells. In this study, we selected ten patients from the Department of Plastic Surgery of Kyoto University Hospital to become cell donors. We performed medical interviews and blood sampling for the donor to ensure virus safety. We examined the tissues and isolated cells by performing a nucleic acid test (NAT). To establish a master cell bank, quality evaluation was performed according to the International Conference of Harmonization (ICH) Q5A. Serological tests of the blood samples from the ten donors showed that two of them were ineligible. The cells registered in the cell bank were found to be compatible after virus testing was performed, and a master cell bank was constructed. Hence, we established a keratinocyte and fibroblast bank of clinically usable human cultured cells in Japan for the first time.

High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) can be effective in treating type 1 respiratory failure by reducing the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The purpose of this study was to assess the reduction of disease severity and safety of HFNC treatment in patients with severe COVID-19. We retrospectively observed 513 consecutive patients with COVID-19 admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to January 2021. We included patients with severe COVID-19 who received HFNC for their deteriorating respiratory status. HFNC success was defined as improvement in respiratory status after HFNC and transfer to conventional oxygen therapy, while HFNC failure was defined as transfer to non‐invasive positive pressure ventilation or ventilator, or death after HFNC. Predictive factors associated with failure to prevent severe disease were identified. Thirty-eight patients received HFNC. Twenty-five (65.8%) patients were classified in the HFNC success group. In the univariate analysis, age, history of chronic kidney disease (CKD), non-respiratory sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) ≥ 1, oxygen saturation to fraction of inspired oxygen ratio (SpO(2)/FiO(2)) before HFNC ≤ 169.2, were significant predictors of HFNC failure. Multivariate analysis revealed that SpO(2)/FiO(2) value before HFNC ≤ 169.2 was an independent predictor of HFNC failure. No apparent nosocomial infection occurred during the study period. Appropriate use of HFNC for acute respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 can reduce the severity of severe disease without causing nosocomial infection. Age, history of CKD, non-respiratory SOFA before HFNC ≤ 1, and SpO(2)/FiO(2) before HFNC ≤ 169.2 were associated with HFNC failure.

The sporadic E (Es) layer is an ionospheric layer with a high electron density and thin altitudinal thickness and appears at altitudes around 100 km. The density is sometimes so high that even VHF radio waves from the ground can be reflected and propagate beyond the radio horizon. It has been shown that aeronautical VHF navigation signals in the 108–118 MHz band can propagate beyond the radio horizon to cause potential interference. However, there has been little technique to monitor the Es layer in wide area. The fine structures of the Es layers which reflects the dynamics of the thermosphere has not been well understood yet. This study shows that the ROTI (rate of TEC index) map by utilizing dense GNSS observations is effective in detecting the Es layer at least in the daytime. The Es layer studies has a well-defined frontal structure, when ROTI values are mapped at the typical Es layer height (100 km). A methodology of detecting and characterizing the Es layer frontal structure without manual operation is developed by utilizing the Hough transformation, and the front direction and velocity are successfully derived. Utilizing the characteristics of the frontal structure, fine structures of the Es layer can be studied, and a couple of interesting features are found. However, this technique would not always be applicable. Application to a homogeneous Es layer and nighttime Es layer are challenging problems. Nevertheless, it is still very useful, and is suitable for automated real-time Es layer monitoring system in a wide area.

A novel mononuclear ruthenium (Ru) complex bearing a PNNP-type tetradentate ligand is introduced here as a self-photosensitized catalyst for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2). When the pre-activation of the Ru complex by reaction with a base was carried out, an induction period of catalyst almost disappeared and the catalyst turnover numbers (TONs) over a reaction time of 144 h reached 307 and 489 for carbon monoxide (CO) and for formic acid (HCO2H), respectively. The complex has a long lifespan as a dual photosensitizer and reduction catalyst, due to the sterically bulky and structurally robust (PNNP)Ru framework. Isotope-labeling experiments under 13CO2 atmosphere indicate that CO and HCO2H were both produced from CO2.

The trade-off relationship between narrowing the bandgap and achieving sufficient redox potentials accounts for the hindrance to the development of an efficient photocatalyst. Most of the previous researchers attempt to narrow the bandgap of semiconductors by impurity doping to achieve visible-light sensitivity, but this approach causes the losses of their oxidation and/or reduction ability. Conversely, this study presents a bandgap widening strategy by doping to improve the redox potential of photogenerated carriers. Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infects cattle, integrates into host DNA as a provirus, and induces malignant B-cell lymphoma. Previous studies have addressed the impact of proviral integration of BLV on BLV-induced leukemogenesis. However, no studies have monitored sequential changes in integration sites in which naturally infected BLV individuals progress from the premalignant stage to the terminal disease. Here, we collected blood samples from a single, naturally infected Holstein cow at three disease progression stages (Stage I: polyclonal stage, Stage II: polyclonal toward oligoclonal stage, Stage III: oligoclonal stage) and successfully visualized the kinetics of clonal expansion of cells carrying BLV integration sites using our BLV proviral DNA-capture sequencing method. Although 24 integration sites were detected in Stages I and II, 92% of these sites experienced massive depletion in Stage III. Of these sites, 46%, 37%, and 17% were located within introns of Refseq genes, intergenic regions, and repetitive sequences, respectively. At Stage III cattle with lymphoma, only two integration sites were generated de novo in the intergenic region of Chr1, and the intron of the CHEK2 gene on Chr17 was significantly increased. Our results are the first to demonstrate clonal expansion after the massive depletion of cells carrying BLV integration sites in a naturally infected cow.

Autologous cultured epidermis (CE) is successfully used in burn care, but it requires a manufacturing time of three weeks and is very expensive owing to its custom-made nature of treatment. To compensate this disadvantage, dried allogeneic CE promises a novel therapeutic approach; and previous reports have demonstrated its efficacy in promoting wound healing using a murine skin defect model. Herein, a prospective clinical study was conducted to confirm the safety and efficacy of dried allogeneic CE for wound treatment.Dried CE was manufactured using donor keratinocytes obtained from excess surgical skin and applied to skin defects that were at least 3 cm in length and less than 10 % of the body surface area of the patients. The patients were observed for 14 days after CE application. The primary endpoint was the incidence of adverse events and the secondary endpoint was the percentage of wound healed since baseline, on days 7 and 14. Furthermore, as a stratified analysis, the percentage of wound healed, specified as deep dermal burns, was calculated.Six patients (five burns and one skin ulcer after necrotizing fasciitis) enrolled in the study. As a serious adverse event, a local infection was observed in one patient, which resolved by debridement and conventional skin grafting. Other adverse events that were potentially related to this treatment included two cases of skin erosion, and one case of systemic fever. No unresolved adverse events remained at the end of the study period. The percentage of wound healed was 73.4 ± 19.2 % on Day 7, and 92.2 ± 11.8 % on Day 14. When the targeted disease was restricted to deep dermal burns, the percentage of wound healed was 69.9 ± 28.9 % on Day 7 and 90.5 ± 13.2 % on Day 14.Treatment with dried CE was safely performed without any unresolved severe adverse effects. Dried CE is a new and promising modality for skin defect treatment, such as burns and ulcers, and is expected to compensate for the disadvantages of autologous CE. However, large-scale clinical trials are required to confirm their efficacy.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an attractive renewable one-carbon (C1) feedstock in terms of its earth abundance, low cost, and non-toxicity. Developing new catalytic systems to realize the practical insertion of CO2 into organic molecules has been of great importance for ecological economics. In recent years, outstanding improvements have been carried out in the field of light-driven catalytic carboxylation via the activation of CO2 as the key reagent. The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) signals at two Equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crests of the ionosphere have been studied using the continuous GNSS network data in Vietnam and adjacent regions during the 2008- 2021 period. The monthly mean EIA crests amplitudes are calculated. The Lomb-Scargle periodogram method was applied to the residuals of the EIA crests magnitudes, DTEC, which are obtained from subtracting the fittings with solar index, F10.7. The Lomb-Scargle spectrum shows the quasi-biennial component in the residuals DTEC with the picks at 18, 25, and 29-30 months. The ionosphere QBO at two EIA crests was found out by the band-pass filter centered at 25 months with haft-power points at 17 and 33 months. The zonal wind data at 50 hPa (~ 20 km) of the tropical equatorial stratosphere is used as the stratosphere QBO (SQBO) to consider the relationship between the SQBO and the obtained ionosphere QBO. The direct comparison and the cross wavelet transform of the SQBO and ionosphere QBO data series show that during 2008-2009, the ionosphere QBO signal is low, the SQBO and ionosphere QBO are in phase during the 2010-2013 and 2018-2021 periods, but anti-phase during the 2014-2017 period. For the 2010-2013, 2014-2017 and 2018-2021 periods, the correlation coefficients are 0.623, 0.637, -0.646 in the northern crest, and 0.571, 0.53, -0.530 in the southern crest, respectively. Furthermore, we also observed that the SQBO and the ionosphere QBO signals were shortened during the 2015-2016 period, approximately 1.5 years. Previous studies showed that the ENSO (El Niño - Southern Oscillation) warm phase, also known as El-Niño existed during 2015-2016. The results of this study allow us to assume that the SQBO influences the ionosphere QBO. Our results show that the SQBO is the main factor affecting the ionospheric QBO at two EIA crests. However, the physical theoretical interpretation of the mechanisms of action is a challenge for scientists and requires further research.

An ideal hydrogel for tissue engineering and regenerative therapy is cytocompatible, biocompatible, and has low-swelling characteristics. Recently, a novel low-swelling hydrogel with a homogenous structure was developed by crosslinking a recombinant peptide, modeled on human collagen type 1 (RCPhC1), with a four-arm polyethylene glycol (tetra-PEG). Here, we hypothesized that the biodegradability of the RCPhC1 hydrogel was adjustable by altering its initial polymer concentration. Three types of RCPhC1 hydrogels were prepared using the initial polymer at different concentrations, and their morphology, swelling ratio, collagenase degradability, cytocompatibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability were compared. The results revealed a low swelling ratio. The higher the concentration of the initial polymer, the longer it took for it to be degraded by collagenase. The average cell viability ratio was over 92% when using the direct contact method, which suggests that the hydrogels have excellent cytocompatibility. No death, tumorigenesis, exposure of the implants, or skin necrosis associated with the subcutaneous implantation of the hydrogels was found in mice in vivo. Moreover, histological evaluation revealed the formation of a thin fibrous capsule, which suggests an acceptable biocompatibility. Furthermore, as hypothesized, it was confirmed that the biodegradability can be adjusted by changing the initial polymer concentration. Collectively, the ability to fine-tune the biodegradability of RCPhC1 hydrogels demonstrates their potential for use in various clinical applications.

Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) is essential to support aircraft navigation. L1 SBAS operates on the L1 frequency (1575.42 MHz) and is currently still of interest since all GNSS satellites and receivers do not fully support additional frequencies such as L5 (1176.45 MHz). Although the Global Positioning System (GPS) aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) SBAS is available, the performances are degraded due to the discrepancies of the ionospheric correction over Thailand and surrounding areas. Hence, in this work, we propose a new method based on the geometry-free ionospheric delay estimation with a single frequency (L1) and a single reference station requirement. The local ionospheric delays are estimated based on the proposed method with the observed GPS and GAGAN data in Thailand. Then the ionospheric corrections are obtained from the estimated local ionospheric delays. The analysis shows that using the estimated corrections, the positioning errors are reduced both on quiet days and locally disturbed days in 2019. More reductions in the positioning errors are found in September and December than other months. In addition, we perform a preliminary availability assessment of two critical phases of flights. The GAGAN performances with the proposed method for the APV-I and LPV-200 categories are improved up to 57% and 53%, respectively, in comparison with the baseline method of the IGP correction.

This paper demonstrates and assesses the capability of the advanced three-dimensional (3-D) ionosphere tomography technique, during severe conditions. The study area is northeast Asia and quasi-Japan-centred. Reconstructions are based on total electron content data from a dense ground-based global navigation satellite system receiver network and parameters from operational ionosondes. We used observations from ionosondes, Swarm satellites and radio occultation (RO) to assess the 3-D picture. Specifically, we focus on St. Patrick’s day geomagnetic storm (17–19 March 2015), the most intense in solar cycle 24. During this event, the energy ingested into the ionosphere resulted in Dst and Kp and reaching values ~ − 223 nT and 8, respectively, and the region of interest, the East Asian sector, was characterized by a ~ 60% reduction in electron densities. Results show that the reconstructed densities follow the physical dynamics previously discussed in earlier publications about storm events. Moreover, even when ionosonde data were not available, the technique could still provide a consistent picture of the ionosphere vertical structure. Furthermore, analyses show that there is a profound agreement between the RO profiles/in-situ densities and the reconstructions. Therefore, the technique is a potential candidate for applications that are sensitive to ionospheric corrections.

Wassel VI radial polydactyly is associated with metacarpal adduction and radial deviation of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the ulnar duplicate. The soft tissue abnormalities responsible for these deformities were characterized using preoperative multi-planar three-dimensional ultrasound and intraoperative observation in four patients. In all patients, the abductor pollicis brevis and superficial head of the flexor pollicis brevis inserted into the radial first metacarpal, whereas the adductor pollicis and deep head of the flexor pollicis brevis inserted into the ulnar thumb. Aberrant location of the flexor pollicis longus and absence of the A1 pulley system was associated with severe radial deviation. An additional superficial thenar muscle along the ulnar metacarpal was associated with minimal metacarpal adduction. Uneven forces on the ulnar duplicate could be associated with these characteristic deformities and joint instability. Knowledge of these abnormalities allows better planning of surgery and further insight into this rare radial polydactyly configuration. Level of evidence: II

Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is a GNSS augmentation system that meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements to support precision approach and landing. GBAS is based on local differential GNSS technique with reference stations located around an airport to provide necessary integrity and accuracy. The performance of the GBAS system can be affected by gradient in the ionospheric delay between aircraft and reference stations. A nominal ionospheric gradient, which is bounded by a conservative error bound, is represented by a parameter σvig. The parameter σvig is commonly determined using station pair to GNSS Continuous Operating Reference Station (CORS) data. The station-pair method is susceptible to doubling of the estimation error of receiver inter-frequency bias (IFB) and is not suitable with the CORS conditions in Indonesia. We propose a satellite-pair method that is found to be more suitable for the CORS network over Indonesia which is centered in Java and Sumatra islands. An overall value of σvig (5.21 mm/km) was obtained using this method along with preliminary results of a comparison of σvig from Java and Sumatra islands. Graphical Abstract

Traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) were observed over Japan by using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver network data after the eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai in Tonga on 15 January 2022. Two types of TIDs with different characteristics were observed as perturbation in the total electron content (TEC). The first one arrived at Japan which are located about 7800 km away from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai about 3 h after the eruption. The amplitude was about ± 0.5 TECU. The wavefronts was in the NNE–SSW direction and propagated in the WNW direction (– 69$$^\circ$$ ∘ counter-clockwise from the north) at 250 m s$$^{-1}$$ - 1 . The wavelength was estimated as 400 km. The second one arrived at Japan about 7 h after the eruption. The amplitude was about ± 1.0 TECU. The wavefronts was in the NE–SW direction and propagated in the NW direction (– 53$$^\circ$$ ∘ counter-clockwise from the north) at 270 m s$$^{-1}$$ - 1 . The wavelength was longer than the first one and was estimated as 800 km. The first one were associated with ionospheric irregularities represented by the rate of TEC index (ROTI). In contrast, the second one did not have irregularities all over the TIDs, but in only a limited region. The arrival of the first TID was too early for the atmospheric acoustic waves to arrive, while the arrival of the second TIDs approximately coincided with the arrival of surface pressure enhancement. To understand the mechanisms of the TIDs, further studies with wide-area observations as well as numerical calculations are necessary. TIDs and ionospheric irregularities after volcanic eruption could be threats to GNSS-based systems especially for those which utilize carrier-phase measurements. Graphical Abstract

A solar energetic particle (SEP) event generates a shower of secondary generated particles in the Earth’s atmosphere down to lower altitudes to cause an atmospheric radiation storm (ARS). The high-energy secondary particles cause additional radiation dose at altitudes where aircraft flies. The space weather information provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) designated space weather centers includes advisories on the solar radiation storm. The Warning System for AVIation Exposure to Solar energetic particle (WASAVIES), we can estimate the effective dose rate (EDR) along the flight path of the aircraft. However, it has not been well established how the operators of aircraft should react with the space weather advisories on the solar radiation storm. By using a flight trajectory generation algorithm and the global EDR distribution, the economic impacts of ARS associated with SEP events on aircraft operation, namely the flight path length, flight time, and fuel consumption, are estimated. The conditions of the peak of the ARS event on 20 January 2005 are used. The economic impacts for a flight route from New York, US to Tokyo, Japan, are estimated with constraints in flight routes to avoid the hazard of radiation and compared with those of the reference case without the ARS effects. The fuel consumption is shown to increase by 39–69 tons (33–58%) for a twin-engine, wide-body jet passenger aircraft, when a constraint is imposed on the flight altitude only. When the constraints are set on the aircraft altitude and the latitude, the flight time and the fuel consumption are both increased by 2.2–2.8 h (17–20%) and 32–48 tons (27–41%), respectively. If the ARS event duration is limited for 3 h, the increase in the fuel consumption is about 7.6–14 tons (6.4–12%). This economic impact may be reduced, if the space weather nowcast and forecast for the ARS and an optimal flight trajectory generation algorithm are used together. Setting more flexible constraints on the flight route and generating optimal flight trajectories with minimal economic impacts by fully utilizing the global EDR distribution is the next step.

The redox-neutral addition of α-C–H bonds of acetonitrile and acetone to styrenes was enabled via the hydrogen-atom transfer from relatively acidic and water-miscible C(sp3)–H bonds to an aqueous hydroxyl radical generated cleanly and iteratively by the oxidation of water under silver-nanoparticle-loaded titania photocatalysis without using stoichiometric oxidation agents.

Two-dimensional (2D) boron monosulfide (BS) nanosheets are predicted to have several stable phases and unique electronic structures, endowing them with interesting attributes, including superconducting, thermoelectric, and hydrogen storage properties. In this paper, we report the experimental realization of 2D BS nanosheets by the physical exfoliation of rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS). Moreover, we demonstrate the facile separation of a mixture of 2D BS nanosheets and the r-BS powder in acetonitrile; the former were selectively separated as a dispersion in the supernatant, whereas the latter remained in the precipitate. In addition, density functional theory calculations reveal a clear dependence of the bandgap energy (Eg) on the number of layers of stacked BS nanosheets, where Eg for BS nanosheets is approximately 1.0 eV higher than that for r-BS. Atomic force microscopy, cathode luminescence, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, and excitation emission matrix experiments revealed a consistent bandgap difference of approximately 1.0 eV between the BS nanosheets and r-BS. We also demonstrate the applications based on the properties that originated from the difference in the bandgap between r-BS and BS nanosheets using photoelectrochemical current switching. These results indicate that the nanosheet bandgap can be tuned to a desired value by controlling the number of stacked 2D BS nanosheets. Therefore, BS nanosheets are promising non-metal 2D materials for applications requiring bandgap control, such as electronics and photocatalysis.

A novel platinum nanoparticle catalyst closely located near the surface of titanium oxide, PtNP/TiO2, has been prepared. This catalyst has both the properties of a photocatalyst and a metal nanoparticle catalyst, and acquired environmentally friendly catalytic activity, which cannot be achieved by just one of these catalysts, to afford ethers from benzyl alcohols under the wavelength of 420 nm.

Two-dimensional materials have wide ranging applications in electronic devices and catalysts owing to their unique properties. Boron-based compounds, which exhibit a polymorphic nature, are an attractive choice for developing boron-based two-dimensional materials. Among them, rhombohedral boron monosulfide (r-BS) has recently attracted considerable attention owing to its unique layered structure similar to that of transition metal dichalcogenides and a layer-dependent bandgap. However, experimental evidence that clarifies the charge carrier type in the r-BS semiconductor is lacking. In this study, we synthesized r-BS and evaluated its performance as a semiconductor by measuring the Seebeck coefficient and photo-electrochemical responses. The properties unique to p-type semiconductors were observed in both measurements, indicating that the synthesized r-BS is a p-type semiconductor. Moreover, a distinct Fano resonance was observed in Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy, which was ascribed to the Fano resonance between the E(2) (TO) phonon mode and electrons in the band structures of r-BS, indicating that the p-type carrier was intrinsically doped in the synthesized r-BS. These results demonstrate the potential future application prospects of r-BS.
