Germinal matrix-intraventricular hemorrhage (GM-IVH) is among the devastating neurological complications with mortality and neurodevelopmental disability rates ranging from 14.7% to 44.7% in preterm infants. The medical techniques have improved throughout the years, as the morbidity-free survival rate of very-low-birth-weight infants has increased; however, the neonatal and long-term morbidity rates have not significantly improved. To this date, there is no strong evidence on pharmacological management on GM-IVH, due to the limitation of well-designed randomized controlled studies. However, recombinant human erythropoietin administration in preterm infants seems to be the only effective pharmacological management in limited situations. Hence, further high-quality collaborative research studies are warranted in the future to ensure better outcomes among preterm infants with GM-IVH.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of body mass index (BMI) on survival in patients with nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) treated with radical or partial nephrectomy.Materials and Methods: Between June 1994 and December 2021, 482 patients with RCC underwent radical or partial nephrectomy. Among those patients, 21 patients with lymph node or distant metastasis were excluded. The medical records of the remaining 461 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The prognostic significance of various clinicopathological variables, including BMI, was evaluated in univariate and multivariate analyses.Results: Of the total 461 patients, 171 (37.1%) were categorized as normal-weight, 118 (25.6%) as overweight, and 172 (37.3%) as obese. This study aims to propose an indoor air quality prediction method that can be easily utilized and reflects temporal characteristics using indoor and outdoor input data measured near the indoor target point as input to calculate indoor PM2.5 concentration through a multiple linear regression model. The atmospheric conditions and air pollution detected in one-minute intervals using sensor-based monitoring equipment (Dust Mon, Sentry Co Ltd., Seoul, Korea) inside and outside houses from May 2019 to April 2021 were used to develop the prediction model. By dividing the multiple linear regression model into one-hour increments, we attempted to overcome the limitation of not representing the multiple linear regression model’s characteristics over time and limited input variables. The multiple linear regression (MLR) model classified by time unit showed an improvement in explanatory power by up to 9% compared to the existing model, and some hourly models had an explanatory power of 0.30. These results indicated that the model needs to be subdivided by time period to more accurately predict indoor PM2.5 concentrations.

The consumption of fresh produce and fruits has increased over the last few years as a result of increasing consumer awareness of healthy lifestyles. Several studies have shown that fresh produces and fruits could be potential sources of human pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this study, 248 strains were isolated from lettuce and surrounding soil samples, and 202 single isolates selected by the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting method were further characterized. From 202 strains, 184 (91.2%) could be identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, while 18 isolates (8.9%) could not be unequivocally identified. A total of 133 (69.3%) and 105 (54.7%) strains showed a resistance phenotype to ampicillin and cefoxitin, respectively, while resistance to gentamicin, tobramycin, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline occurred only at low incidences. A closer investigation of selected strains by whole genome sequencing showed that seven of the fifteen sequenced strains did not possess any genes related to acquired antibiotic resistance. In addition, only one strain possessed potentially transferable antibiotic resistance genes together with plasmid-related sequences. Therefore, this study indicates that there is a low possibility of transferring antibiotic resistance by potential pathogenic enterobacteria via fresh produce in Korea. However, with regards to public health and consumer safety, fresh produce should nevertheless be continuously monitored to detect the occurrence of foodborne pathogens and to hinder the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes potentially present in these bacteria.

Synthetic sRNAs allow knockdown of target genes at translational level, but have been restricted to a limited number of bacteria. Here, we report the development of a broad-host-range synthetic sRNA (BHR-sRNA) platform employing the RoxS scaffold and the Hfq chaperone from Bacillus subtilis. BHR-sRNA is tested in 16 bacterial species including commensal, probiotic, pathogenic, and industrial bacteria, with >50% of target gene knockdown achieved in 12 bacterial species. For medical applications, virulence factors in Staphylococcus epidermidis and Klebsiella pneumoniae are knocked down to mitigate their virulence-associated phenotypes. For metabolic engineering applications, high performance Corynebacterium glutamicum strains capable of producing valerolactam (bulk chemical) and methyl anthranilate (fine chemical) are developed by combinatorial knockdown of target genes. A genome-scale sRNA library covering 2959 C. glutamicum genes is constructed for high-throughput colorimetric screening of indigoidine (natural colorant) overproducers. The BHR-sRNA platform will expedite engineering of diverse bacteria of both industrial and medical interest.

To evaluate the prognostic value of albumin-to-alkaline phosphatase ratio (AAPR) on recurrence and survival in patients with non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) treated with radical or partial nephrectomy.Between June 1994 and December 2018, 491 patients with RCC who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy at 2 institutions were enrolled in this study. Recurrence-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) analyses were performed to distinguish the differences in postoperative recurrence and survival between patients stratified by an optimal cut-off value of AAPR. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were established to determine the independent prognostic factors after propensity score weighting.Of the total 491 patients, 51 patients (10.4%) developed local recurrence or distant metastasis and 26 patients (5.3%) died of disease during the follow-up period. Patients with AAPR0.41 had significantly lower rates of RFS and CSS than those of patients with AAPR≥0.41 in multivariate analysis (P.001 and P = .027, respectively). After propensity scroe matching analyses, this difference was still remained for RFS (P.001). However, AAPR was not an independent prognostic factor for CSS but the value was almost pregnant (HR = 2.674; 95%CI = 0.872-8.203; P = .086).AAPR can serve as a novel and useful tool to refine prognosis in patients with non-metastatic RCC treated with partial or radical nephrectomy. These findings suggest that AAPR could be a promising prognostic factor for prediction of recurrence and survival in patients with non-metastatic RCC who undergo nephrectomy.

There is a lack of convincing data concerning the safety of iron therapy in patients with advanced liver cirrhosis (LC). This study investigated the hepatic effects of ferric carboxymaltose, an intravenous iron supplement, in a rat model of cirrhosis.In total, 45 Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated into three groups: normal rats (control group, n=15), cirrhotic rats receiving intravenous normal saline (LC group, n=15), and cirrhotic rats receiving 20 mg/kg intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (LC-iron group, n=15). LC was induced by twice-weekly intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride. Biochemical parameters were compared at 0, 2, 14, and 28 days. Additionally, liver tissue samples were extracted from five rats in each group at 2, 14, and 28 days for evaluation of the degrees of hepatic fibrosis and iron deposition. Inflammatory and oxidative stress markers were also compared among groups.Serum alanine transferase levels did not significantly differ between the LC and LC-iron groups at 0 (443±110 vs. 444±117 IU/L, P0.99), 2 (453±117 vs. 479±136 IU/L, P=0.84), 14 (1,535±1,058 vs. 1,578±711 IU/L, P=0.55), or 28 days (2,067±641 vs. 2,533±914 IU/L, P=0.15). The degree of hepatic fibrosis was comparable between the groups, although hepatic iron accumulation was greater in the LC-iron group than in the LC group. The levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers were significantly lower in the LC-iron group than in the LC group.In our rat model of cirrhosis, the administration of intravenous iron appears safe. However, further preclinical and clinical studies are warranted to confirm the safety and efficacy of intravenous iron in patients with LC or end-stage liver disease.

Background Gintonin is a ginseng-derived exogenous G-protein-coupled lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) receptor ligand. Gintonin exerts its neuronal and non-neuronal in vitro and in vivo effects through LPA receptor subtypes. However, it is unknown whether gintonin can bind to the plasma membrane of cells and can transactivate the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor. In the present study, we examined whether gintonin-biotin conjugates directly bound to LPA receptors and transactivated the EGF receptor. Methods We designed gintonin-biotin conjugates through gintonin biotinylation and examined whether gintonin-biotin conjugate binding sites co-localized with the LPA receptor subtype binding sites. We further examined whether gintonin-biotin transactivated the EGF receptor via LPA receptor regulation via phosphor-EGF and cell migration assays. Results Gintonin-biotin conjugates elicit [Ca2+]i transient similar to that observed with unbiotinylated gintonin in cultured PC3 cells, suggesting that biotinylation does not affect physiological activity of gintonin. We proved that gintonin-biotin conjugate binding sites co-localized with the LPA1/6 receptor binding sites. Gintonin-biotin binding to the LPA1 receptor transactivates the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor through phosphorylation, while the LPA1/3 receptor antagonist, Ki16425, blocked phosphorylation of the EGF receptor. Additionally, an EGF receptor inhibitor AG1478 blocked gintonin-biotin conjugate-mediated cell migration. Conclusions We observed the binding between ginseng-derived gintonin and the plasma membrane target proteins corresponding to the LPA1/6 receptor subtypes. Moreover, gintonin transactivated EGF receptors via LPA receptor regulation. Our results suggest that gintonin directly binds to the LPA receptor subtypes and transactivates the EGF receptor. It may explain the molecular basis of ginseng physiology/pharmacology in biological systems.

After en bloc resection of the maxilla or mandible, surgeons may choose to replace the missing bone and soft tissue with a fibula free flap (FFF). One of the complications that may arise during the healing of a FFF is heterotopic ossification along the free flap pedicle. Heterotopic ossification is most often noted incidentally on post-operative radiographs and rarely creates a functional deficit. Subperiosteal dissection of the pedicle from the bone during the harvest of the FFF is believed to be the main contributing factor that leads to this formation of bone along the flap soft tissue. Pain or limitation of movement of the jaws, depending upon where heterotopic bone forms are related functional issues. Changes in facial appearance due to expansion related to this phenomenon of bone deposition may also occur. This paper presents a patient that developed a functional deficit secondary to heterotopic ossification of a FFF that required surgical intervention The goal of our surgery was to maintain the blood supply to a vascularized flap while removing the heterotopic bone. We will present the unique aspects of planning this challenging surgery: Case A 40-year-old man with a history of right posterior maxillary ameloblastoma underwent a hemi-maxillectomy with fibula free flap reconstruction. The patient developed extracapsular heterotopic bone ankylosis beginning 2 months postoperatively developing severe trismus and required surgical intervention. Radiographic imaging revealed extensive heterotopic ossification of the vascular pedicle that extended from the most proximal positioned end of the fibula to the inferior lateral border of the mandible. A radiographic CT with contrast imaging revealed an intact vascular pedicle with surrounding heterotopic bone. Virtual planning and stereolithic modeling were utilized to plan the heterotopic bone removal. In the operating room, we removed the heterotopic bone in small segments according to the virtual plan to avoid injuring the vascular pedicle. A coronoidectomy was also performed to help gain more range of motion. An adipofascial flap using the buccal fat pad was raised into the area of defect to prevent future recurrence. The patient was put on a strict physical therapy regimen to help regain his range of motion. Conclusion Heterotopic ossifications along free flap pedicles are a known complication of the FFF. A conservative management approach should be used since most postoperative patients will be asymptomatic and findings are incidental on post-op imaging. Surgery should be reserved for symptomatic patients. Heterotopic ossification needs to be considered as a differential in a microvascular reconstruction postoperative patient when the patient presents with a slow onset of facial swelling, neck mass, or trismus. Virtual planning is an essential tool in the surgeon’s planning armamentarium dependent upon the timing of the procedure so that the vascular integrity of the flap can be protected after the initial anastomosis.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays have attracted considerable attention owing to their low power consumption, rapid response, high contrast ratio, and self-luminescence. To expand the use of OLED microdisplays, high luminance and vivid color are required. Herein, we developed a high-luminance, low-voltage, three-wavelength, top-emitting white OLED (WOLED) using a silicon substrate for complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor-based, full-color microdisplay applications. Optimal thickness of the emitting layer and thickness and position of the interlayer were determined to improve device performance. The device exhibited luminance of ∼4,200 cd/m2 at 3.3 V, and the maximum luminance reached 170,000 cd/m2 at 11.4 V. In addition, red, green, and blue color filters were deposited onto the WOLED after the thin-film encapsulation process to verify feasibility of the device for full-color microdisplay applications. The color gamut of the developed WOLED with color filters was 136% compared to sRGB. The maximum luminance and color gamut of the developed device is among the highest values obtained to date for OLED microdisplays.

Days alive and out of hospital (DAOH) is a simple estimator based on the number of days not in hospital within a defined period. In cases of mortality within the period, DAOH is regarded as zero. It has not been validated solely in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). This study aimed to demonstrate a correlation between DAOH and outcome of OPCAB. We identified 2211 OPCAB performed from January 2010 to August 2016. We calculated DAOH at 30 and 60 days. We generated a receiver-operating curve and compared outcomes. The median duration of hospital stay after OPCAB was 6 days. The median DAOH values at 30 and 60 days were 24 and 54 days. The estimated thresholds for 3-year mortality for DAOH at 30 and 60 days were 20 and 50 days. Three-year mortality was higher for short DAOH (1.2% vs. 5.7% and 1.1% vs. 5.6% DAOH at 30 and 60 days). After adjustment, the short DAOH 30 group showed significantly higher mortality during 3-year follow-up (hazard ratio 3.07; 95% confidence interval 1.45–6.52; p = 0.004). DAOH at 30 days after OPCAB showed a correlation with 3-year outcomes. DAOH 30 might be a reliable long-term outcome measure that can be obtained within 30 days after surgery.

International audience; The Gram-negative, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive, rod-shaped strain Arafor3T was isolated from forest soil (France). Comparative 16S rRNA gene analysis and phylogenetic analysis based on (1) multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) with four housekeeping genes (atpD, gyrB, infB and rpoB) and (2) genomes indicated that strain Arafor3T shared 98.83% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of Serratia fonticola DSM 4576T and was closely related to this same strain in the MLSA and in the phylogenomic tree reconstruction. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) comparisons of strain Arafor3T with its nearest neighbor S. fonticola DSM 4576T showed 93.5% identity and 55.7% sequence similarity, respectively, and were lower than the 96% and 70% species-level cut-off values relating to these analyses (Logan et al. in Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 59:2114–21, 2009, https://doi.org/10.1099/ijs.0.013649-0). The strain differed from S. fonticola in that it was urease and arginine dihydrolase negative. The major fatty acids of strain Arafor3T are C16:0, C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c, C14:0, C14:0 3-OH/16:1 isoI, and C18:1 ω7c. The major respiratory quinone is Q8. The polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, and 6 unknown lipids. The mol G + C% content of the genomic DNA of strain Arafor3T was 53.49%. Hence, Arafor3T represents a novel species within the genus Serratia, for which the name Serratia silvae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Arafor3T (=LMG 32338T = CIP 111939T).

Four novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composed of 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrene (TBAPy4-) or 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-carboxlatephenyl)benzene (TCPB4-) linkers with gallium (Ga) or vanadium (V) were synthesized in this work. 3D electron diffraction patterns combined with high-resolution electron microscopy images were employed to investigate the structure of these MOFs. All four MOFs were highly porous with specific Langmuir surface area ranging from ~900 to over ~1800 m2 g-1. The MOFs also showed high uptake of greenhouse gas and especially selective towards SF6 (110 cm3 cm-3, 293 K 1 bar) and CO2 over N2 (or CH4). Sorption kinetics were investigated in detail and the MOF with the highest gas uptake had pore channels with diameters of approx. 9.1 13.6 and 6.5 13.7 in dimension. These Ga- and V-MOFs are potentially interesting candidate sorbents for greenhouse gas capture and separation applications, especially for the separation of SF6 and CO2 from N2, which are relevant in the electronics and chemical industry, respectively.

Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials perforated with uniform micropores are considered ideal building blocks to fabricate advanced membranes for molecular separation and energy storage devices with high rate capabilities. However, creating high-density uniform micropores in 2D carbon using conventional perforation methods remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report a zeolite-templated bottom-up synthesis of ordered microporous 2D carbon. Through rational analysis of 255 zeolite structures, we find that the IWV zeolite having large 2D microporous channels and aluminosilicate compositions can serve as an ideal template for carbon replication. The resulting carbon is made of an extremely thin polyaromatic backbone and contains well-defined vertically aligned micropores (0.69 nm in diameter). Its areal pore density (0.70 nm −2 ) is considerably greater than that of porous graphene (−2 ) prepared using top-down perforation methods. The isoporous membrane fabricated by assembling the exfoliated 2D carbon nanosheets exhibits outstanding permeance and molecular sieving properties in organic solvent nanofiltration.

A comprehensive analysis of safety and functional features of six Weissella and Periweissella type strains was performed. Our data demonstrated the probiotic potential of these species, indicating the P. beninensis type strain as the best candidate based on its potential probiotic features and the safety assessment.
