EPIC 204376071 is a young (~10 Myr) M star (estimated mass ~0.16 M☉, and radius 0.63 R☉), probable member of the Upper Sco association, that exhibited an 80% drop in flux lasting one day, in the course of one campaign of the K2 mission (Rappaport et al. 2019). Different scenarios have been proposed to explain this feature, some of them requiring a periodic behaviour of these events. With only one event observed, it becomes challenging to obtain further observations to investigate further the origin of the abrupt flux drops, and start confirming/rejecting possible scenarios. We have obtained new photometric observations, and analysed archival photometry, with the goal to identify additional flux drops on this star, and get the ephemeris, should these events be periodic., {"references":["2019MNRAS.485.2681R"]}

BG Ind is a well studied, bright, nearby binary consisting of a pair of F stars in a 1.46-day orbit. We have discovered in the TESS lightcurve for TIC 229804573 (aka BG Ind) a second eclipsing binary in the system with a 0.53-day. Our subsequent analyses of the recent TESS and archival ground-based photometric and radial velocity data, reveal that the two binaries are gravitationally bound in a 721-day period, moderately eccentric orbit. We present the results of a joint spectro-photodynamical analysis of the eclipse timing variation curves of both binaries based on TESS and ground-based archival data, the TESS lightcurve, archival radial velocity data and the spectral energy distribution, coupled with the use of PARSEC stellar isochrones. We confirm prior studies of BG Ind which found that the brighter binary A consists of slightly evolved F-type stars with refined masses of 1.32 and 1.43 $M_\odot$, and radii of 1.59 and 2.34 $R_\odot$. The previously unknown binary B has two less massive stars of 0.69 and 0.64 $M_\odot$ and radii of 0.64 and 0.61 $R_\odot$. Based on a number of different arguments which we discuss, we conclude that the three orbital planes are likely aligned to within 17$^\circ$., 17 pages. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of a compact triply eclipsing triple star system in the southern continuous viewing zone of the TESS space telescope. TIC 278825952 is a previously known, but unstudied circular eclipsing binary with a period of 4.781 d with a tertiary component in a wider, circular orbit of 235.55-d period that was found from three sets of third-body eclipses and from light travel-time effect dominated eclipse timing variations. We performed a joint photodynamical analysis of the eclipse timing variation curves, photometric data, and the spectral energy distribution, coupled with the use of PARSEC stellar isochrones. We find that the inner binary consists of slightly evolved, near twin stars of masses of 1.12 and 1.09 M⊙ and radii of 1.40 and 1.31 R⊙. The third, less massive star has a mass of 0.75 M⊙ and radius of 0.70 R⊙. The low mutual inclination and eccentricities of the orbits show that the system is highly coplanar and surprisingly circular.

Of more than a thousand known cataclysmic variables (CVs), where a white dwarf is accreting from a hydrogen-rich star, only a dozen have orbital periods below 75 minutes

In this paper we present a catalog of 4584 eclipsing binaries observed during the first two years (26 sectors) of the TESS survey. We discuss selection criteria for eclipsing binary candidates, detection of hither-to unknown eclipsing systems, determination of the ephemerides, the validation and triage process, and the derivation of heuristic estimates for the ephemerides. Instead of keeping to the widely used discrete classes, we propose a binary star morphology classification based on a dimensionality reduction algorithm. Finally, we present statistical properties of the sample, we qualitatively estimate completeness, and discuss the results. The work presented here is organized and performed within the TESS Eclipsing Binary Working Group, an open group of professional and citizen scientists; we conclude by describing ongoing work and future goals for the group. We have identified a star, EPIC 249706694 (HD 139139), that was observed during K2 Campaign 15 with the Kepler extended mission that appears to exhibit 28 transit-like events over the course of the 87-day observation. The unusual aspect of these dips, all but two of which have depths of $200 \pm 80$ ppm, is that they exhibit no periodicity, and their arrival times could just as well have been produced by a random number generator. We show that no more than four of the events can be part of a periodic sequence. We have done a number of data quality tests to ascertain that these dips are of astrophysical origin, and while we cannot be absolutely certain that this is so, they have all the hallmarks of astrophysical variability on one of two possible host stars (a likely bound pair) in the photometric aperture. We explore a number of ideas for the origin of these dips, including actual planet transits due to multiple or dust emitting planets, anomalously large TTVs, S- and P-type transits in binary systems, a collection of dust-emitting asteroids, `dipper-star' activity, and short-lived starspots. We report the discovery of the third tidally tilted pulsator, TIC 63328020. Observations with the TESS satellite reveal binary eclipses with an orbital period of 1.1057 d, and $\delta$ Scuti-type pulsations with a mode frequency of 21.09533 d$^{-1}$. This pulsation exhibits a septuplet of orbital sidelobes as well as a harmonic quintuplet. Using the oblique pulsator model, the primary oscillation is identified as a sectoral dipole mode with $l = 1, |m| = 1$. We find the pulsating star to have $M_1 \simeq 2.5\, {\rm M}_\odot$, $R_1 \simeq 3 \, {\rm R}_\odot$, and $T_{\rm eff,1} \simeq 8000$ K, while the secondary has $M_2 \simeq 1.1 \, {\rm M}_\odot$, $R_2 \simeq 2 \, {\rm R}_\odot$, and $T_{\rm eff,2} \simeq 5600$ K. Both stars appear to be close to filling their respective Roche lobes. The properties of this binary as well as the tidally tilted pulsations differ from the previous two tidally tilted pulsators, HD74423 and CO Cam, in important ways. We also study the prior history of this system with binary evolution models and conclude that extensive mass transfer has occurred from the current secondary to the primary., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, and 8 tables

We report the discovery of a compact, coplanar, quadruply-lined, eclipsing quadruple star system from TESS data, TIC 454140642, also known as TYC 0074-01254-1. The target was first detected in Sector 5 with 30-min cadence in Full-Frame Images and then observed in Sector 32 with 2-min cadence. The light curve exhibits two sets of primary and secondary eclipses with periods of PA = 13.624 days (binary A) and PB = 10.393 days (binary B). Analysis of archival and follow-up data shows clear eclipse-timing variations and divergent radial velocities, indicating dynamical interactions between the two binaries and confirming that they form a gravitationally-bound quadruple system with a 2+2 hierarchy. The Aa+Ab binary, Ba+Bb binary, and A-B system are aligned with respect to each other within a fraction of a degree: the respective mutual orbital inclinations are 0.25 degrees (A vs B), 0.37 degrees (A vs A-B), and 0.47 degrees (B vs A-B). The A-B system has an orbital period of 432 days - the second shortest amongst confirmed quadruple systems - and an orbital eccentricity of 0.3., Comment: 25 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

In this work we derive the minimum allowed orbital periods of H-rich bodies ranging in mass from Saturn's mass to 1 $M_{\odot}$, emphasizing gas giants and brown dwarfs over the range $0.0003 - 0.074 \, M_\odot$. Analytic fitting formulae for $P_{\rm min}$ as a function of the mass of the body and as a function of the mean density are presented. We assume that the density of the host star is sufficiently high so as not to limit the minimum period. In many instances this implies that the host star is a white dwarf. This work is aimed, in part, toward distinguishing brown dwarfs from planets that are found transiting the host white dwarf without recourse to near infrared or radial velocity measurements. In particular, orbital periods of $\lesssim 100$ minutes are very likely to be brown dwarfs. We report the discovery of a sextuply eclipsing sextuple star system from TESS data, TIC 168789840, also known as TYC 7037-89-1, the first known sextuple system consisting of three eclipsing binaries. The target was observed in Sectors 4 and 5 during Cycle 1, with lightcurves extracted from TESS Full Frame Image data. It was also previously observed by the WASP survey and ASAS-SN. The system consists of three gravitationally bound eclipsing binaries in a hierarchical structure of an inner quadruple system with an outer binary subsystem. Follow-up observations from several different observatories were conducted as a means of determining additional parameters. The system was resolved by speckle interferometry with a 0.″42 separation between the inner quadruple and outer binary, inferring an estimated outer period of ∼2 kyr. It was determined that the fainter of the two resolved components is an 8.217 day eclipsing binary, which orbits the inner quadruple that contains two eclipsing binaries with periods of 1.570 days and 1.306 days. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis of the stellar parameters has shown that the three binaries of TIC 168789840 are “triplets,” as each binary is quite similar to the others in terms of mass, radius, and T eff. As a consequence of its rare composition, structure, and orientation, this object can provide important new insight into the formation, dynamics, and evolution of multiple star systems. Future observations could reveal if the intermediate and outer orbital planes are all aligned with the planes of the three inner eclipsing binaries.

A new class of pulsating binary stars was recently discovered, whose pulsation amplitudes are strongly modulated with orbital phase. Stars in close binaries are tidally distorted, so we examine how a star's tidally induced asphericity affects its oscillation mode frequencies and eigenfunctions. We explain the pulsation amplitude modulation via tidal mode coupling such that the pulsations are effectively confined to certain regions of the star, e.g., the tidal pole or the tidal equator. In addition to a rigorous mathematical formalism to compute this coupling, we provide a more intuitive semi-analytic description of the process. We discuss three resulting effects: 1. Tidal alignment, i.e., the alignment of oscillation modes about the tidal axis rather than the rotation axis; 2. Tidal trapping, e.g., the confinement of oscillations near the tidal poles or the tidal equator; 3. Tidal amplification, i.e., increased flux perturbations near the tidal poles where acoustic modes can propagate closer to the surface of the star. Together, these phenomena can account for the pulsation amplitude and phase modulation of the recently discovered class of "tidally tilted pulsators." We compare our theory to the three tidally tilted pulsators HD 74423, CO Cam, and TIC 63328020, finding that tidally trapped modes that are axisymmetric about the tidal axis can largely explain the first two, while a non-axisymmetric tidally aligned mode is present in the latter. Finally, we discuss implications and limitations of the theory, and we make predictions for the many new tidally tilted pulsators likely to be discovered in the near future., Accepted by MNRAS, comments welcome. We report the discovery and complex analyses of the first two compact hierarchical triple star systems discovered with TESS in or near its southern continuous viewing zone during Year 1. Both TICs 167692429 and 220397947 were previously unknown eclipsing binaries, and the presence of a third companion star was inferred from eclipse timing variations exhibiting signatures of strong 3rd-body perturbations and, in the first system, also from eclipse depth variations. We carried out comprehensive analyses, including the simultaneous photodynamical modelling of TESS and archival ground-based WASP lightcurves, as well as eclipse timing variation curves. Also, for the first time, we included in the simultaneous fits multiple star spectral energy distribution data and theoretical PARSEC stellar isochrones, taking into account Gaia DR2 parallaxes and cataloged metallicities. We find that both systems have twin F-star binaries and a lower mass tertiary star. In the TIC 167692429 system the inner binary is moderately inclined ($i_{mut}=27^o$) with respect to the outer orbit, and the binary vs. outer (triple) orbital periods are 10.3 vs. 331 days, respectively. The mutually inclined orbits cause a driven precession of the binary orbital plane which leads to the disappearance of binary eclipses for long intervals. In the case of TIC 220397947 the two orbital planes are more nearly aligned and the inner vs. outer orbital periods are 3.5 and 77 days, respectively. In the absence of radial velocity observations, we were unable to calculate highly accurate masses and ages for the two systems. According to stellar isochrones TIC 167692429 might be either a pre-main sequence or an older post-MS system. We report the confirmation and mass determination of three hot Jupiters discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission: HIP 65Ab (TOI-129, TIC-201248411) is an ultra-short-period Jupiter orbiting a bright (V = 11.1 mag) K4-dwarf every 0.98 days. It is a massive 3.213 ± 0.078 MJ planet in a grazing transit configuration with an impact parameter of b = 1.17−0.08+0.10. As a result the radius is poorly constrained, 2.03−0.49+0.61RJ. The planet’s distance to its host star is less than twice the separation at which it would be destroyed by Roche lobe overflow. It is expected to spiral into HIP 65A on a timescale ranging from 80 Myr to a few gigayears, assuming a reduced tidal dissipation quality factor of Qs′ = 107 − 109. We performed a full phase-curve analysis of the TESS data and detected both illumination- and ellipsoidal variations as well as Doppler boosting. HIP 65A is part of a binary stellar system, with HIP 65B separated by 269 AU (3.95 arcsec on sky). TOI-157b (TIC 140691463) is a typical hot Jupiter with a mass of 1.18 ± 0.13 MJ and a radius of 1.29 ± 0.02 RJ. It has a period of 2.08 days, which corresponds to a separation of just 0.03 AU. This makes TOI-157 an interesting system, as the host star is an evolved G9 sub-giant star (V = 12.7). TOI-169b (TIC 183120439) is a bloated Jupiter orbiting a V = 12.4 G-type star. It has a mass of 0.79 ±0.06 MJ and a radius of 1.09−0.05+0.08RJ. Despite having the longest orbital period (P = 2.26 days) of the three planets, TOI-169b receives the most irradiation and is situated on the edge of the Neptune desert. All three host stars are metal rich with [Fe / H] ranging from 0.18 to0.24.

Astronomers have discovered thousands of planets outside the solar system, most of which orbit stars that will eventually evolve into red giants and then into white dwarfs. During the red giant phase, any close-orbiting planets will be engulfed by the star, but more distant planets can survive this phase and remain in orbit around the white dwarf. Some white dwarfs show evidence for rocky material floating in their atmospheres, in warm debris disks, or orbiting very closely, which has been interpreted as the debris of rocky planets that were scattered inward and tidally disrupted. Recently, the discovery of a gaseous debris disk with a composition similar to ice giant planets demonstrated that massive planets might also find their way into tight orbits around white dwarfs, but it is unclear whether the planets can survive the journey. So far, the detection of intact planets in close orbits around white dwarfs has remained elusive. Here, we report the discovery of a giant planet candidate transiting the white dwarf WD 1856+534 (TIC 267574918) every 1.4 days. The planet candidate is roughly the same size as Jupiter and is no more than 14 times as massive (with 95% confidence). Other cases of white dwarfs with close brown dwarf or stellar companions are explained as the consequence of common-envelope evolution, wherein the original orbit is enveloped during the red-giant phase and shrinks due to friction. In this case, though, the low mass and relatively long orbital period of the planet candidate make common-envelope evolution less likely. Instead, the WD 1856+534 system seems to demonstrate that giant planets can be scattered into tight orbits without being tidally disrupted, and motivates searches for smaller transiting planets around white dwarfs., Comment: 50 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables. CO~Cam (TIC 160268882) is the second ``single-sided pulsator'' to be discovered. These are stars where one hemisphere pulsates with a significantly higher amplitude than the other side of the star. CO~Cam is a binary star comprised of an Am $\delta$~Sct primary star with $T_{\rm eff} = 7070 \pm 150$\,K, and a spectroscopically undetected G main-sequence secondary star. The dominant pulsating side of the primary star is centred on the L$_1$ point. We have modelled the spectral energy distribution combined with radial velocities, and independently the {\em TESS} light curve combined with radial velocities. Both of these give excellent agreement and robust system parameters for both stars. The $\delta$~Sct star is an oblique pulsator with at least four low radial overtone (probably) f~modes with the pulsation axis coinciding with the tidal axis of the star, the line of apsides. Preliminary theoretical modelling indicates that the modes must produce much larger flux perturbations near the L$_1$ point, although this is difficult to understand because the pulsating star does not come near to filling its Roche lobe. More detailed models of distorted pulsating stars should be developed. These newly discovered single-sided pulsators offer new opportunities for astrophysical inference from stars that are oblique pulsators in close binary stars., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

We perform a study of stellar flares for the 24,809 stars observed with 2 minute cadence during the first two months of the TESS mission. Flares may erode exoplanets' atmospheres and impact their habitability, but might also trigger the genesis of life around small stars. TESS provides a new sample of bright dwarf stars in our galactic neighborhood, collecting data for thousands of M-dwarfs that might host habitable exoplanets. Here, we use an automated search for flares accompanied by visual inspection. Then, our public allesfitter code robustly selects the appropriate model for potentially complex flares via Bayesian evidence. We identify 1228 flaring stars, 673 of which are M-dwarfs. Among 8695 flares in total, the largest superflare increased the stellar brightness by a factor of 16.1. Bolometric flare energies range from 10^31.0 to 10^36.9 erg, with a median of 10^33.1 erg. Furthermore, we study the flare rate and energy as a function of stellar type and rotation period. We solidify past findings that fast rotating M-dwarfs are the most likely to flare, and that their flare amplitude is independent of the rotation period. Finally, we link our results to criteria for prebiotic chemistry, atmospheric loss through coronal mass ejections, and ozone sterilization. Four of our flaring M dwarfs host exoplanet candidates alerted on by TESS, for which we discuss how these effects can impact life. Using Campaign 15 data from the K2 mission, we have discovered a triply-eclipsing triple star system: EPIC 249432662. The inner eclipsing binary system has a period of 8.23 days, with shallow $\sim$3% eclipses. During the entire 80-day campaign, there is also a single eclipse event of a third-body in the system that reaches a depth of nearly 50% and has a total duration of 1.7 days, longer than for any previously known third-body eclipse involving unevolved stars. The binary eclipses exhibit clear eclipse timing variations. A combination of photodynamical modeling of the lightcurve, as well as seven follow-up radial velocity measurements, has led to a prediction of the subsequent eclipses of the third star with a period of 188 days. A campaign of follow-up ground-based photometry was able to capture the subsequent pair of third-body events as well as two further 8-day eclipses. A combined photo-spectro-dynamical analysis then leads to the determination of many of the system parameters. The 8-day binary consists of a pair of M stars, while most of the system light is from a K star around which the pair of M stars orbits., Comment: 20 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present two new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars, TIC 198781841 and TIC 229960986, discovered in TESS photometric data. The periodogram of TIC 198781841 has a large peak at 166.506 d$^{-1}$ (1.93 mHz), with two nearby peaks at 163.412 d$^{-1}$ (1.89 mHz) and 169.600 d$^{-1}$ (1.96 mHz). These correspond to three independent high-overtone pressure modes, with alternating even and odd $\ell$ values. TIC 229960986 has a high-frequency triplet centered at 191.641 d$^{-1}$ (2.218 mHz), with sidebands at 191.164 d$^{-1}$ (2.213 mHz) and 192.119 d$^{-1}$ (2.224 mHz). This pulsation appears to be a rotationally split dipole mode, with sideband amplitudes significantly larger than that of the central peak; hence, both pulsation poles are seen over the rotation cycle. Our photometric identification of two new roAp stars underscores the remarkable ability of TESS to identify high-frequency pulsators without spectroscopic observations., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in RNAAS

We present follow-up photometry and spectroscopy of ZTF J0328$-$1219 strengthening its status as a white dwarf exhibiting transiting planetary debris. Using TESS and Zwicky Transient Facility photometry, along with follow-up high speed photometry from various observatories, we find evidence for two significant periods of variability at 9.937 and 11.2 hr. We interpret these as most likely the orbital periods of different debris clumps. Changes in the detailed dip structures within the light curves are observed on nightly, weekly, and monthly timescales, reminiscent of the dynamic behavior observed in the first white dwarf discovered to harbor a disintegrating asteroid, WD 1145+017. We fit previously published spectroscopy along with broadband photometry to obtain new atmospheric parameters for the white dwarf, with $M_{\star} = 0.731 \pm 0.023\,M_{\odot}$, $T_{\mathrm{eff}} = 7630 \pm 140\,$K, and $\mathrm{[Ca/He]}=-9.55\pm0.12$. With new high-resolution spectroscopy, we detect prominent and narrow Na D absorption features likely of circumstellar origin, with velocities $21.4\pm1.0$ km s$^{-1}$ blue-shifted relative to atmospheric lines. We attribute the periodically modulated photometric signal to dusty effluents from small orbiting bodies such as asteroids or comets, but are unable to identify the most likely material that is being sublimated, or otherwise ejected, as the environmental temperatures range from roughly 400K to 600K., 24 pages, 10 figures, 9 tables, accepted to ApJ

WD 1145+017 was observed from 2016 November through 2017 June for the purpose of further characterizing the transit behavior of the dusty debris clouds orbiting this white dwarf. The optical observations were carried out with a small ground-based telescope run by an amateur astronomer, and covered 53 different nights over the 8-month interval. We have found that the optical activity has increased to the highest level observed since its discovery with Kepler K2, with approximately 17% of the optical flux extinguished per orbit. The source exhibits some transits with depths of up to 55% and durations as long as two hours. The dominant period of the orbiting dust clouds during 2016-2017 is 4.49126 hours. We present 'waterfall' images for the entire 2016-2017 and 2015-2016 observing seasons. In addition, the white dwarf was observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory for 10-ksec on each of four different occasions, separated by about a month each. The upper limit on the average X-ray flux from WD 1145+017 is ~5 x 10^{-15} ergs/cm^2/s (unabsorbed over the range 0.1-100 keV), which translates to an upper limit on the X-ray luminosity, Lx, of ~2 x 10^{28} ergs/s. If Lx = G Mwd Mdot/Rwd, where Mwd and Rwd are the mass and radius of the white dwarf, and Mdot is the accretion rate, then Mdot < 2 x 10^{11} g/s. This is just consistent with the value of Mdot that is inferred from the level of dust activity., 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present results from a study of TESS observations of the eclipsing dwarf nova system Z Cha, covering both an outburst and a superoutburst. We discover that Z Cha undergoes hysteretic loops in eclipse depth - out-of-eclipse flux space in both the outburst and the superoutburst. The direction that these loops are executed in indicates that the disk size increases during an outburst before the mass transfer rate through the disk increases, placing constraints on the physics behind the triggering of outbursts and superoutbursts. By fitting the signature of the superhump period in a flux-phase diagram, we find the rate at which this period decreases in this system during a superoutburst for the first time. We find that the superhumps in this source skip evolutionary stage "A" seen during most dwarf nova superoutbursts, even though this evolutionary stage has been seen during previous superoutbursts of the same object. Finally, O-C values of eclipses in our sample are used to calculate new ephemerides for the system, strengthening the case for a third body in Z Cha and placing new constraints on its orbit., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS July 2019. 13 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables

During a visual search through the Kepler main-field lightcurves, we have discovered a cataclysmic variable (CV) that experienced only a single 4-day long outburst over four years, rising to three times the quiescent flux. During the four years of non-outburst data the Kepler photometry of KIC 5608384 exhibits ellipsoidal light variations (`ELV') with a $\sim$12% amplitude and period of 8.7 hours. Follow-up ground-based spectral observations have yielded a high-quality radial velocity curve and the associated mass function. Additionally, H$\alpha$ emission lines were present in the spectra even though these were taken while the source was presumably in quiescence. These emission lines are at least partially eclipsed by the companion K star. We utilize the available constraints of the mass function, the ELV amplitude, Roche-lobe filling condition, and inferred radius of the K star to derive the system masses and orbital inclination angle: $M_{\rm wd} \simeq 0.46 \pm 0.02 \, M_\odot$, $M_{\rm K} \simeq 0.41 \pm 0.03 \, M_\odot$, and $i \gtrsim 70^\circ$. The value of $M_{\rm wd}$ is the lowest reported for any accreting WD in a cataclysmic variable. We have also run binary evolution models using MESA to infer the most likely parameters of the pre-cataclysmic binary. Using the mass-transfer rates from the model evolution tracks we conclude that although the rates are close to the critical value for accretion disk stability, we expect KIC 5608384 to exhibit dwarf nova outbursts. We also conclude that the accreting white dwarf most likely descended from a hot subdwarf and, most notably, that this binary is one of the first bona fide examples of a progenitor of AM CVn binaries to have evolved through the CV channel., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have searched for short periodicities in the light curves of stars with $T_{\rm eff}$ cooler than 4000 K made from 2-minute cadence data obtained in TESS sectors 1 and 2. Herein we report the discovery of 10 rapidly rotating M-dwarfs with highly structured rotational modulation patterns among 10 M dwarfs found to have rotation periods less than 1 day. Star-spot models cannot explain the highly structured periodic variations which typically exhibit between 10 and 40 Fourier harmonics. A similar set of objects was previously reported following K2 observations of the Upper Scorpius association (Stauffer et al. 2017). We examine the possibility that the unusual structured light-curves could stem from absorption by charged dust particles that are trapped in or near the stellar magnetosphere. We also briefly explore the possibilities that the sharp structured features in the lightcurves are produced by extinction by coronal gas, by beaming of the radiation emitted from the stellar surface, or by occultations of spots by a dusty ring that surrounds the star. The latter is perhaps the most promising of these scenarios. Most of the structured rotators display flaring activity, and we investigate changes in the modulation pattern following the largest flares. As part of this study, we also report the discovery of 371 rapidly rotating M-dwarfs with rotational periods below 4 hr, of which the shortest period is 1.63 hr., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables

We have discovered a young M star of mass $0.16\,M_\odot$ and radius $0.63\,R_\odot$, likely in the Upper Sco Association, that exhibits only a single $80\%$ deep occultation of 1-day duration. The star has frequent flares and a low-amplitude rotational modulation, but is otherwise quiet over 160 days of cumulative observation during K2 Campaigns C2 and C15. We discuss how such a deep eclipse is not possible by one star crossing another in any binary or higher-order stellar system in which no mass transfer has occurred. The two possible explanations we are left with are (1) orbiting dust or small particles (e.g., a disk bound to a smaller orbiting body, or unbound dust that emanates from such a body); or (2) a transient accretion event of dusty material near the corotation radius of the star. In either case, the time between such occultation events must be longer than $\sim$80 days. We model a possible orbiting occulter both as a uniform elliptically shaped surface (e.g., an inclined circular disk) and as a `dust sheet' with a gradient of optical depth behind its leading edge. The required masses in such dust features are then $\gtrsim 3 \times 10^{19}$ g and $\gtrsim 10^{19}$ g, for the two cases, respectively., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, and 5 tables. We report detection of quasi-periodic (1.5 day) dimming of HD 240779, the solar-mass primary in a 5" visual binary (also TIC 284730577), by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. This dimming, as has been shown for other "dipper" stars, is likely due to occultation by circumstellar dust. The barycentric space motion, lithium abundance, rotation, and chromospheric emission of the stars in this system point to an age of ~125 Myr, and possible membership in the AB Doradus moving group. As such it occupies an important but poorly explored intermediate regime of stars with transient dimming between young stellar objects in star forming regions and main sequence stars, and between UX Orionis-type Ae/Be stars and M-type "dippers". HD 240779, but not its companion BD+10714B, has WISE-detected excess infrared emission at 12 and 22 microns indicative of circumstellar dust. We propose that infrared emission is produced by collisions of planetesimals during clearing of a residual disk at the end of rocky planet formation, and that quasi-periodic dimming is produced by the rapid disintegration of a 100 km planetesimal near the silicate evaporation radius. Further studies of this and similar systems will illuminate a poorly understood final phase of rocky planet formation like that which produced the inner Solar System., Comment: to appear in MNRAS

WD 1145+017 was observed from 2015 November to 2016 July for the purpose of characterizing transit behavior of the white dwarf by dust clouds thought to be produced by fragments of an asteroid in close orbit with the star. Fortuitously, most of these observations were carried out during a time when the overall `dip' activity was dramatically enhanced over that during its discovery with Kepler K2. By the end of our reported observations the dip activity had declined to a level close to its K2 discovery state. Three notable events were observed. In 2016 January a large number of dust clouds appeared that had an orbital period of 4.4912 hours, and this event also marked the end of a 3-month interval dominated by the K2 `A' period. The second event was a 2016 April 21 appearance of four dip features with drift lines in a waterfall diagram (date vs. phase) that diverged from their origin date, at a location away from the `A' asteroid, and which lasted for two weeks. The third event was the sudden appearance of a dip feature with a period of 4.6064 hours, which is essentially the same as the K2 `B' period. The evolution of dip shape, depth, and total fade amount provide constraints on dust production and loss mechanisms. Collisions can account for the sudden appearance of dust clouds, and the sudden increase in dust amount, but another mechanism for continual dust production is also required.

We report the discovery of a compact multi-planet system orbiting the relatively nearby (78pc) and bright ($K=8.9$) K-star, K2-266 (EPIC248435473). We identify up to six possible planets orbiting K2-266 with estimated periods of P$_b$ = 0.66, P$_{.02}$ = 6.1, P$_c$ = 7.8, P$_d$ = 14.7, P$_e$ = 19.5, and P$_{.06}$ = 56.7 days and radii of R$_P$ = 3.3 R$_{\oplus}$, 0.646 R$_{\oplus}$, 0.705 R$_{\oplus}$, 2.93 R$_{\oplus}$, 2.73 R$_{\oplus}$, and 0.90 R$_{\oplus}$, respectively. We are able to confirm the planetary nature of two of these planets (d & e) from analyzing their transit timing variations ($m_d= 8.9_{-3.8}^{+5.7} M_\oplus$ and $m_e=14.3_{-5.0}^{+6.4} M_\oplus$), confidently validate the planetary nature of two other planets (b & c), and classify the last two as planetary candidates (K2-266.02 & .06). From a simultaneous fit of all 6 possible planets, we find that K2-266 b's orbit has an inclination of 75.32$^{\circ}$ while the other five planets have inclinations of 87-90$^{\circ}$. This observed mutual misalignment may indicate that K2-266 b formed differently from the other planets in the system. The brightness of the host star and the relatively large size of the sub-Neptune sized planets d and e make them well-suited for atmospheric characterization efforts with facilities like the Hubble Space Telescope and upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. Compared to the Earth, the exoplanet Kepler-78b has a similar size (1.2 $R_\oplus$) and an orbital period a thousand times shorter (8.5 hours). It is currently the smallest planet for which the mass, radius, and dayside brightness have all been measured. Kepler-78b is an exemplar of the ultra-short-period (USP) planets, a category defined by the simple criterion $P_{\rm orb} < 1$ day. We describe our Fourier-based search of the Kepler data that led to the discovery of Kepler-78b, and review what has since been learned about the population of USP planets. They are about as common as hot Jupiters, and they are almost always smaller than 2 $R_\oplus$. They are often members of compact multi-planet systems, although they tend to have relatively large period ratios and mutual inclinations. They might be the exposed rocky cores of "gas dwarfs," the planets between 2-4 $R_\oplus$ in size that are commonly found in somewhat wider orbits., fixed error in Eq. (4)

Disks in binary systems can cause exotic eclipsing events. MWC 882 (BD-22 4376, EPIC 225300403) is such a disk-eclipsing system identified from observations during Campaign 11 of the K2 mission. We propose that MWC 882 is a post-Algol system with a B7 donor star of mass $0.542\pm0.053\,M_\odot$ in a 72 day period orbit around an A0 accreting star of mass $3.24\pm0.29\,M_\odot$. The $59.9\pm6.2\,R_\odot$ disk around the accreting star occults the donor star once every orbit, inducing 19 day long, 7% deep eclipses identified by K2, and subsequently found in pre-discovery ASAS and ASAS-SN observations. We coordinated a campaign of photometric and spectroscopic observations for MWC 882 to measure the dynamical masses of the components and to monitor the system during eclipse. We found the photometric eclipse to be gray to $\approx 1$%. We found the primary star exhibits spectroscopic signatures of active accretion, and observed gas absorption features from the disk during eclipse. We suggest MWC 882 initially consisted of a $\approx 3.6\,M_\odot$ donor star transferring mass via Roche lobe overflow to a $\approx 2.1\,M_\odot$ accretor in a $\approx 7$ day initial orbit. Through angular momentum conservation, the donor star is pushed outward during mass transfer to its current orbit of 72 days. The observed state of the system corresponds with the donor star having left the Red Giant Branch ~0.3 Myr ago, terminating active mass transfer. The present disk is expected to be short-lived ($10^2$ years) without an active feeding mechanism, presenting a challenge to this model., 19 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recently, Teachey, Kipping, and Schmitt (2018) reported the detection of a candidate exomoon, tentatively designated Kepler-1625b I, around a giant planet in the Kepler field. The candidate exomoon would be about the size and mass of Neptune, considerably larger than any moon in our Solar System, and if confirmed, would be the first in a new class of giant moons or binary planets. Motivated by the large mass ratio in the Kepler-1625b planet and satellite system, we investigate the detectability of similarly massive exomoons around directly imaged exoplanets via Doppler spectroscopy. The candidate moon around Kepler-1625b would induce a radial velocity signal of about 200 m/s on its host planet, large enough that similar moons around directly imaged planets orbiting bright, nearby stars might be detected with current or next generation instrumentation. In addition to searching for exomoons, a radial velocity survey of directly imaged planets could reveal the orientations of the planets' spin axes, making it possible to identify Uranus analogs., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. More than a decade after astronomers realized that disrupted planetary material likely pollutes the surfaces of many white dwarf stars, the discovery of transiting debris orbiting the white dwarf WD 1145+017 has opened the door to new explorations of this process. We describe the observational evidence for transiting planetary material and the current theoretical understanding (and in some cases lack thereof) of the phenomenon.

We have discovered a doubly eclipsing, bound, quadruple star system in the field of K2 Campaign 7. EPIC 219217635 is a stellar image with $Kp = 12.7$ that contains an eclipsing binary (`EB') with $P_A = 3.59470$ d and a second EB with $P_B = 0.61825$ d. We have obtained followup radial-velocity (`RV') spectroscopy observations, adaptive optics imaging, as well as ground-based photometric observations. From our analysis of all the observations, we derive good estimates for a number of the system parameters. We conclude that (1) both binaries are bound in a quadruple star system; (2) a linear trend to the RV curve of binary A is found over a 2-year interval, corresponding to an acceleration, $\dot \gamma = 0.0024 \pm 0.0007$ cm s$^{-2}$; (3) small irregular variations are seen in the eclipse-timing variations (`ETVs') detected over the same interval; (4) the orbital separation of the quadruple system is probably in the range of 8-25 AU; and (5) the orbital planes of the two binaries must be inclined with respect to each other by at least 25$^\circ$. In addition, we find that binary B is evolved, and the cooler and currently less massive star has transferred much of its envelope to the currently more massive star. We have also demonstrated that the system is sufficiently bright that the eclipses can be followed using small ground-based telescopes, and that this system may be profitably studied over the next decade when the outer orbit of the quadruple is expected to manifest itself in the ETV and/or RV curves., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The original {\it Kepler} mission observed and characterized over 2400 eclipsing binaries in addition to its prolific exoplanet detections. Despite the mechanical malfunction and subsequent non-recovery of two reaction wheels used to stabilize the instrument, the {\it Kepler} satellite continues collecting data in its repurposed {\it K2} mission surveying a series of fields along the ecliptic plane. Here we present an analysis of the first full baseline {\it K2} data release: the Campaign 0 data-set. In the 7761 light curves, we have identified a total of 207 eclipsing binaries. Of these, 97 are new discoveries that were not previously identified. Our pixel-level analysis of these objects has also resulted in identification of several false positives (observed targets contaminated by neighboring eclipsing binaries), as well as the serendipitous discovery of two short period exoplanet candidates. We provide catalog cross-matched source identifications, orbital periods, morphologies and ephemerides for these eclipsing systems. We also describe the incorporation of the K2 sample into the Kepler Eclipsing Binary Catalog\footnote{\url{this http URL}}, present spectroscopic follow-up observations for a limited selection of nine systems, and discuss prospects for upcoming {\it K2} campaigns.

Astronomical observations of distant quasars may be important to test models for quantum gravity, which posit Planck-scale spatial uncertainties (’spacetime foam’) that would produce phase fluctuations in the wavefront of radiation emitted by a source, which may accumulate over large path lengths. We show explicitly how wavefront distortions cause the image intensity to decay to the point where distant objects become undetectable if the accumulated path-length fluctuations become comparable to the wavelength of the radiation. We also reassess previous efforts in this area. We use X-ray and gammaray observations to rule out several models of spacetime foam, including the interesting random-walk and holographic models.

We discuss a new class of exoplanets that appear to be emitting a tail of dusty effluents. These disintegrating planets are found close to their host stars and have very hot, and likely molten, surfaces. WOS: 000398416700066, We present a strongly interacting quadruple system associated with the K2 target EPIC 220204960. The K2 target itself is a K-p = 12.7-mag star at T-eff -6100 K, which we designate as 'B-N' ( blue northerly image). The host of the quadruple system, however, is a K-p -17-mag star with a composite M-star spectrum, which we designate as 'R-S' ( red southerly image). With a 3.2-arcsec separation and similar radial velocities and photometric distances, 'B-N' is likely physically associated with 'R-S', making this a quintuple system, but that is incidental to our main claim of a strongly interacting quadruple system in ` R-S'. The two binaries in 'R-S' have orbital periods of 13.27 and 14.41 d, respectively, and each has an inclination angle of >= 89 degrees. From our analysis of radial-velocity ( RV) measurements, and of the photometric light curve, we conclude that all four stars are very similar with masses close to 0.4M(circle dot). Both of the binaries exhibit significant eclipse-timing variations where those of the primary and secondary eclipses 'diverge' by 0.05 d over the course of the 80-d observations. Via a systematic set of numerical simulations of quadruple systems consisting of two interacting binaries, we conclude that the outer orbital period is very likely to be between 300 and 500 d. We present the first good evidence for exocomet transits of a host star in continuum light in data from the Kepler mission. The Kepler star in question, KIC 3542116, is of spectral type F2V and is quite bright at K_p = 10. The transits have a distinct asymmetric shape with a steeper ingress and slower egress that can be ascribed to objects with a trailing dust tail passing over the stellar disk. There are three deeper transits with depths of ~0.1% that last for about a day, and three that are several times more shallow and of shorter duration. The transits were found via an exhaustive visual search of the entire Kepler photometric data set, which we describe in some detail. We review the methods we use to validate the Kepler data showing the comet transits, and rule out instrumental artefacts as sources of the signals. We fit the transits with a simple dust-tail model, and find that a transverse comet speed of ~35-50 km/s and a minimum amount of dust present in the tail of ~10^16 g are required to explain the larger transits. For a dust replenishment time of ~10 days, and a comet lifetime of only ~300 days, this implies a total cometary mass of > 3 x 10^17 g, or about the mass of Halley's comet. We also discuss the number of comets and orbital geometry that would be necessary to explain the six transits detected over the four years of Kepler prime-field observations. [1] The aureoles around stars caused by thin cirrus limit nighttime measurement opportunities for ground-based astronomy, but can provide information on high-altitude ice crystals for climate research. In this paper we attempt to demonstrate quantitatively how this works. Aureole profiles can be followed out to ~0.2° from stars and ~0.5° from Jupiter. Interpretation of diffracted starlight is similar to that for sunlight, but emphasizes larger particles. Stellar diffraction profiles are very distinctive, typically being approximately flat out to a critical angle followed by gradually steepening power-law falloff with slope less steep than −3. Using the relationship between the phase function for diffraction and the average Fourier transform of the projected area of complex ice crystals, we show that defining particle size in terms of average projected area normal to the propagation direction of the starlight leads to a simple, analytic approximation representing large-particle diffraction that is nearly independent of crystal habit. A similar analytic approximation for the diffraction aureole allows it to be separated from the point spread function and the sky background. Multiple scattering is deconvolved using the Hankel transform leading to the diffraction phase function. Application of constrained numerical inversion to the phase function then yields a solution for the particle size distribution in the range between ~50 μm and ~400 μm. Stellar aureole measurements can provide one of the very few, as well as least expensive, methods for retrieving cirrus microphysical properties from ground-based observations.

We use a collection of 14 well-measured neutron star masses to strengthen the case that a substantial fraction of these neutron stars was formed via electron-capture supernovae (SNe) as opposed to Fe-core collapse SNe. The e-capture SNe are characterized by lower resultant gravitational masses and smaller natal kicks, leading to lower orbital eccentricities when the e-capture SN has led to the formation of the second neutron star in a binary system. Based on the measured masses and eccentricities, we identify four neutron stars, which have a mean post-collapse gravitational mass of ~1.25 solar masses, as the product of e-capture SNe. We associate the remaining ten neutron stars, which have a mean mass of 1.35 solar masses, with Fe-core collapse SNe. If the e-capture supernova occurs during the formation of the first neutron star, then this should substantially increase the formation probability for double neutron stars, given that more systems will remain bound with the smaller kicks. However, this does not appear to be the case for any of the observed systems, and we discuss possible reasons for this., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; Accepted to ApJ

We have computed models for ultraluminous X-ray sources ("ULXs") consisting of a black-hole accretor of intermediate mass ("IMBH"; e.g., ~1000 Msun) and a captured donor star. For each of four different sets of initial donor masses and orbital separations, we computed 30,000 binary evolution models using a full Henyey stellar evolution code. To our knowledge this is the first time that a population of X-ray binaries this large has been carried out with other than approximation methods, and it serves to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach to large-scale population studies of mass-transfer binaries. In the present study, we find that in order to have a plausible efficiency for producing active ULX systems with IMBHs having luminosities > 10^{40} ergs/sec, there are two basic requirements for the capture of companion/donor stars. First, the donor stars should be massive, i.e., > 8 Msun. Second, the initial orbital separations, after circularization, should be close, i.e., < 6-30 times the radius of the donor star when on the main sequence. Even under these optimistic conditions, we show that the production rate of IMBH-ULX systems may fall short of the observed values by factors of 10-100., 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

We present a way of searching for non-transiting exoplanets with dusty tails. In the transiting case, the extinction by dust during the transit removes more light from the beam than is scattered into it. Thus, the forward scattering component of the light is best seen either just prior to ingress, or just after egress, but with reduced amplitude over the larger peak that is obscured by the transit. This picture suggests that it should be equally productive to search for positive-going peaks in the flux from non-transiting exoplanets with dusty tails. We discuss what amplitudes are expected for different orbital inclination angles. We have obtained extensive photometric observations of the polluted white dwarf WD 1145+017 which has been reported to be transited by at least one, and perhaps several, large asteroids (or, planetesimals) with dust emission. We have carried out 53 observation sessions on 37 nights, totaling 192 hours, of this 17th magnitude star with small to modest size telescopes covering the interval 2015 November 1 to 2016 January 21. In all, we have detected some 237 significant dips in flux. Periodograms of the data reveal a significant periodicity of 4.5004 hours that is consistent with the dominant ("A") period detected with K2. The folded light curve at this period shows there is an hour-long depression in flux with a mean depth of nearly 10%. This depression is comprised of a series of shorter and sometimes deeper dips that do not always occur at exactly the same orbital phase, and which would be unresolvable with K2. In fact, we find numerous dips in flux at other orbital phases. Nearly all of the dips associated with this activity appear to drift systematically in phase with respect to the "A" period by about 2.5 minutes per day with a dispersion of ~0.5 min/d, corresponding to a mean drift period of 4.4928 hours. In all, we can track approximately 15 of these drifting features. There is no detection of the "B"-"F" periods found with K2, but if they remain at the K2 levels we would not expect to have seen them. We explain the drifting motion as that of smaller bodies (`fragments') that break off from the asteroid and go into a slightly smaller orbit than that of the asteroid. If our interpretation is correct, we can use the drift rate to determine the mass of the asteroid. Under that scenario, we find that the mass of the asteroid is M_a ~ = 10^23 grams, or about 1/10th the mass of Ceres, with an uncertainty of about a factor of 2., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS; minor revisions

KIC 7177553 was observed by the Kepler satellite to be an eclipsing eccentric binary star system with an 18-day orbital period. Recently, an eclipse timing study of the Kepler binaries has revealed eclipse timing variations in this object with an amplitude of about 100 sec, and an outer period of 529 days. The implied mass of the third body is that of a superJupiter, but below the mass of a brown dwarf. We therefore embarked on a radial velocity study of this binary to determine its system configuration and to check the hypothesis that it hosts a giant planet. From the radial velocity measurements, it became immediately obvious that the same Kepler target contains another eccentric binary, this one with a 16.5-day orbital period. Direct imaging using adaptive optics reveals that the two binaries are separated by 0.4 arcsec (about 167 AU), and have nearly the same magnitude (to within 2%). The close angular proximity of the two binaries, and very similar Gamma velocities, strongly suggest that KIC 7177553 is one of the rare SB4 systems consisting of two eccentric binaries where at least one system is eclipsing. Both systems consist of slowly rotating, non-evolved, solar-like stars of comparable masses. From the orbital separation and the small difference in Gamma velocity, we infer that the period of the outer orbit most likely lies in the range 1000 to 3000 years. New images taken over the next few years, as well as the high-precision astrometry of the Gaia satellite mission, will allow us to set much narrower constraints on the system geometry. Finally, we note that the observed eclipse timing variations in the Kepler data cannot be produced by the second binary. Context. Stars can maintain their observable magnetic activity from the PMS to the tip of the red giant branch. However, the number of known active giants is much lower than active stars on the main sequence since on the giant branch the stars spend only about 10% of their main sequence lifetime. Due to their rapid evolution it is difficult to estimate the stellar parameters of giant stars. A possibility for obtaining more reliable stellar parameters of an active giant arises when it is a member of an eclipsing binary system. Aims. We have discovered EPIC 211759736, an active spotted giant star in an eclipsing binary system during the Kepler K2 Campaign 5. The eclipsing nature allows us to much better constrain the stellar parameters than in most cases of active giant stars. Method. We have combined the K2 data with archival HATNet and DASCH photometry, new spectroscopic radial velocity measurements, and a set of follow-up ground-based BVRI photometric observations, to find the binary system parameters as well as robust spot models for the giant at two different epochs. Results. We determined the physical parameters of both stellar components and provide a description of the rotational and long-term activity of the primary component. The temperatures and luminosities of both components were examined in the context of the HR diagram. We find that both the primary and the secondary components deviate from the evolutionary tracks corresponding to their masses in the sense that the stars appear in the diagram at lower masses than their true masses. Conclusions. We further evaluate the proposition that active giants have masses that are found to be generally higher by traditional methods than are indicated by stellar evolution tracks in the HR diagram. More than 20 pre-cataclysmic variable (pre-CV) systems have now been discovered with very short orbital periods ranging from 250 min down to 68 min. A pre-CV consists of a white dwarf or hot subdwarf primary and a low-mass companion star, where the companion star has successfully ejected the common envelope of the primary progenitor, but mass transfer from the companion star to the primary has not yet commenced. In this short-period range, a substantial fraction of the companion stars are likely to be either brown dwarfs with masses $\lesssim 0.07 \, M_\odot$ or stars at the bottom of the MS ($\lesssim 0.1 M_\odot$). The discovery of these short-period pre-CVs raises the question -- what is the shortest possible orbital period of such systems? We ran 500 brown dwarf/low-mass main sequence models with {\tt MESA} that cover the mass range from 0.002 to 0.1 $M_\odot$. We find the shortest possible orbital period is 40 min with a corresponding brown dwarf mass of 0.07 $M_\odot$ for an age equal to a Hubble time. We discuss the past evolution of these systems through the common envelope and suggest that many of the systems with present day white dwarf primaries may have exited the common envelope with the primary as a helium burning hot subdwarf. The Chandra X-Ray Observatory was used to image the collisional ring galaxy Arp 147 for 42 ks. We detect 9 X-ray sources with luminosities in the range of 1.4 - 7 x 10^{39} ergs/sec in or near the blue knots of star formation associated with the ring. A source with an isotropic X-ray luminosity of 1.4 x 10^{40} ergs/sec is detected in the nuclear region of the intruder galaxy. X-ray sources associated with a foreground star and a background quasar are used to improve the registration of the X-ray image with respect to HST high resolution optical images. The intruder galaxy, which apparently contained little gas before the collision, shows no X-ray sources other than the one in the nuclear bulge which may be a poorly fed supermassive black hole. These observations confirm the conventional wisdom that collisions of gas rich galaxies trigger large rates of star formation which, in turn, generate substantial numbers of X-ray sources, some of which have luminosities above the Eddington limit for accreting stellar-mass

This paper describes a newly designed Sun and Aureole Measurement (SAM) aureolegraph and the first results obtained with this instrument. SAM measurements of solar aureoles produced by cirrus and cumulus clouds were taken at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) Central Facility in Oklahoma during field experiments conducted in June 2007 and compared with simultaneous measurements from a variety of other ground-based instruments. A theoretical relationship between the slope of the aureole profile and the size distribution of spherical cloud particles is based on approximating scattering as due solely to diffraction, which in turn is approximated using a rectangle function. When the particle size distribution is expressed as a power-law function of radius, the aureole radiance as a function of angle from the center of the solar disk also follows a power law, with the sum of the two powers being −5. This result also holds if diffraction is modeled with an Airy function. The diffraction approximation is applied to SAM measurements with optical depths ≲2 to derive the effective radii of cloud particles and particle size distributions between ∼2.5 and ∼25 μm. The SAM results yielded information on cloud properties complementary to that obtained with ARM Central Facility instrumentation. A network of automated SAM units [similar to the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) system] would provide a practical means to gain fundamental new information on the global statistical properties of thin (optical depth ≲ 10) clouds, thereby providing unique information on the effects of such clouds upon the earth’s energy budget.
