In the present study, we investigated the presence of four Vibrio cholerae virulence genes (ctxA, VPI, Zot and ace) in 36 Vibrio alginolyticus isolates obtained from different seawater, sediments and aquatic organisms. We tested the virulence of 13 V. alginolyticus strains against juveniles of Sparus aurata and this virulence was correlated with the presence of V. cholerae virulence genes. A positive amplification for the virulence pathogenicity island was produced by five V. alginolyticus strains and four for cholerae toxin. Some of the V. alginolyticus strains are pathogenic to aquatic animals and might have derived their virulence genes from V. cholerae. V. alginolyticus strains can be considered as a possible reservoir of V. cholerae virulence genes.

The purpose of this article is to identify the relationships of affection that exist between children/adolescents institutionalized in the same shelter. Data collection was carried out in two sisters hosted in Brasília-DF, through field notes, documentary analysis script, theme-story drawing, collage and semi-structured interviews. The indicators arouse from the results, which guided the organization of two of the sense zones, based on the methodology developed by Gonzalez Rey: a) The family of origin and the affective memories; b) Institutionalization and affection in the fraternal relationship. The importance of the sibling group was identified for the establishment of the sense of security, protection and pre-disposition for more positive and resilient attitudes., O objetivo deste artigo é compreender as relações de afeto preservadas pelos irmãos crianças/adolescentes institucionalizados numa mesma instituição. A coleta de dados foi realizada em duas irmãs acolhidas em Brasília-DF, por meio do diário de campo, roteiro de análise documental, desenho-história com tema, colagem e entrevistas semiestruturadas. A partir dos resultados foram levantados os indicadores que orientaram a organização de duas das zonas de sentidos, baseada na metodologia desenvolvida por Gonzalez Rey: a) Memórias afetivas sobre a família de origem; b) Institucionalização e afeto na relação fraterna. Identificou-se a importância do grupo de irmãos para o estabelecimento do sentimento de segurança, proteção e pré-disposição para atitudes mais positivas e resilientes.

Na comunidade, a malnutrição manifesta-se pela perda de massa muscular, estando associada à diminuição da forçamuscular, ao aumento do risco de fragilidade, ao comprometimento funcional e da cicatrização de feridas crónicas, assim como a maior incidência de infeções. Estima-se que a malnutrição afete um em cada três idosos no seu domicílio e um em cada três utentes em instituições de cuidados de idosos. A malnutrição é reversível desde que o utente tenha acesso a um atempado rastreio nutricional que identifique o seu risco nutricional e instituída uma intervenção nutricional individualizada. A malnutrição associada à doença continua a ser percecionada como um problema secundário nos cuidados de saúde primários, pelo que a implementação do rastreio do risco nutricional, como um parâmetro de rotina, é o primeiro passo na melhoria do acesso aos cuidados nutricionais na comunidade. This article explores ivory and ivory trade in early 16th century Southeast Africa, examining them through both historical and environmental lenses. It emphasizes the importance of inter and transdisciplinary research to fully understand the intricacies of the ivory trade, highlighting the need to integrate diverse data sources to understand the sociodynamics of the region and the links between hunted animals, extracted ivory, ivory work and the global networks, and markets in Africa and the Indian Ocean world. In addition, the article also discusses the limitations of the documents used, stressing the complexities of interpreting historical data, the importance of tightly weaving relevant data from other disciplines, and the need for caution when drawing conclusions based on limited evidence. This study contributes to interdisciplinary research on the history of ivory and the ivory trade in Southeast Africa, underscoring the significance of merging historical and environmental perspectives. It encourages future researchers to take a more critical approach and gather more extensive data to gain a deeper understanding of the trade’s complexities.

Introdução: A Diabetes Mellitus tipo 1 (DT1) é uma doença cada vez mais prevalente na adolescência pelo que intervir no autocuidado é determinante para a gestão da doença. O diagnóstico da DT1 na adolescência pode trazer complicações de longo prazo e uma adesão ao autocuidado adequada pode reduzir efeitos negativos e promover uma melhor qualidade de vida. Objetivo: Analisar diferentes estratégias de enfermagem que promovem uma maior adesão do adolescente com DM1 às atividades de autocuidado, identificando aquelas que são mais eficazes. Metodologia: Revisão integrativa da literatura que utilizou a mnemónica PICO para compilar a pergunta de investigação. Procedeu-se à pesquisa de artigos na plataforma EBSCOhost, selecionando-se artigos publicados entre janeiro de 2010 e dezembro de 2022 nas bases de dados MEDLINE complete e CINAHL complete. Foram selecionados sete artigos e seguiram-se as recomendações do método Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses - PRISMA. Resultados: A maioria dos artigos selecionados sugerem existir evidência científica de que a educação e o apoio da equipa multidisciplinar, destacando os enfermeiros, podem aumentar o conhecimento dos adolescentes sobre a doença, ajudar a melhorar a perceção sobre a sua situação e promover a adesão à terapêutica, resultando em uma melhor gestão da doença e qualidade de vida. É necessário que sejam implementadas intervenções e programas de educação específicos para o público adolescente com DT1 para garantir o autocuidado e a gestão da doença. Conclusão:A gestão do comportamento de autocuidado em adolescentes com DT1 é fundamental para a gestão da doença. Esta gestão, requer uma abordagem colaborativa e integrada, incluindo informações claras e precisas, suporte emocional, motivação e ensino da importância da adesão à terapêutica. In the mid-15th century, and with the increase in European sea travels, contacts between Europe and the rest of the world became regular. Ships became primarily responsible for intercontinental connections as well as for the circulation and transport of people and animals, raw materials and goods, knowledge and technology, diseases, pathogens, and healing practices. Long-distance travels shortened distances, brought people and places closer together, made ports and port cities privileged spaces of contact, exchange, and miscegenation. In Europe, the location and the hybrid nature of these spaces made them prone to entry and spread of new diseases, requiring local governments to create and implement prophylactic and health control measures. In the 18th century, reflecting an increasing globalization process, these concerns went far beyond the European universe. Colonial territories have become spaces for experimentation of control and prevention measures.These procedures have been consolidated, participating in a process of construction of medical knowledge and practices that benefited both from the development of European medical and pharmaceutical science, as well as from the incorporation of non-European knowledge and practices, made possible by contacts between geographically and culturally different peoples. In the Portuguese Empire, the coastal areas emerged as privileged spaces for observation and study of the building of this process. In there it was possible to regard identification and knowledge of diseases and local healing practices, resulting from the interaction with the native populations, or regarding the imposition of biomedical practices related to the European pharmacopoeia. The peculiar situation of these sea-land interface areas allowed a better insight into how the interaction between different knowledge and practices was stimulated in the different geographies of the Empire leading to define specific procedures to prevent and/or control spread of diseases, especially in the case of epidemics. Thus the sea also become a vehicle for circulation of agents (human and non-human) that, in certain situations, were central, as in the case of pathologies eradication program, enabling thinking about the various aspects of human/non-human interaction in the social construction of diseases. If recognizing a disease can be a quick process, finding causes and antidotes can be time-consuming and costly, in a space-time marked by advances, setbacks and disparate realities that even compromise the effectiveness of the solutions found, as evidenced by efforts and measures to contain the current COVID-19 pandemic. From this perspective, the true history of diseases in their relationship with coastal areas also calls for a discussion about the “health” of seas, rivers, and oceans that have not only determined and nurtured their existence, but have also contributed to generate new landscapes, and new relationships between human and non-human communities within them, and to demonstrate the link between marine and coastal ecosystems and human populations health.

In nature, cephalopods skin colour modulation is related to the dynamic self-assembly of a family of structural proteins known as reflectins. To fully reach their potential as engineered bio-based materials, reflectins need to be produced by biotechnological means. One of the challenges is associated with establishing and optimizing reflectin purification processes to achieve the highest yield and productivity. Here, we studied purification strategies for two reflectin sequences from different organisms which were recombinantly expressed in a bacterial host at laboratory scale. Reflectins purification was then assessed by two chromatographic and one non-chromatographic methods. Methods were compared considering final purity and yield, productivity, cost and sustainability. The non-chromatographic method based on inclusion bodies washing presented the most promising results (protein purity > 90% and purification yields up to 88%). Our results contribute to define bioprocessing strategies to address the vision of biodegradable and sustainable protein-based materials. publishersversion published

This paper seeks to analyze the relationship between organizational structure, represented by the Management Accounting Control Systems (MACS) and strategy, and to understand how MACS design fit the internationalization strategy and to what extent this affects MACS design. To answer this objective, a case study was carried-out in a service sector company. The findings suggest that in an I-Model internationalization process MACS should be used throughout the process in a differentiated way, allowing the information output to respond to all needs. These results contribute to the scarce knowledge on MACS and its strategy fit., Este documento busca analizar la relación entre la estructura organizativa, representada por los Sistemas de Contabilidad y de Control de Gestión (MACS) y la estrategia, y comprender cómo el diseño del MACS se ajusta a la estrategia de internacionalización y en qué medida esto afecta el diseño del MACS. Para responder a este objetivo, se realizó un estudio de caso en una empresa del sector servicios. Los resultados sugieren que en un proceso de internacionalización de I-Model, el MACS se debe utilizar a lo largo del proceso de manera diferenciada, permitiendo que la salida de información responda a las necesidades de información. Estos resultados contribuyen al escaso conocimiento sobre MACS y ajuste de la estrategia., Este trabalho procura analisar a relação entre a estrutura organizacional, representada pelo Sistema de Contabilidade e Controlo de Gestão (Management Accounting Control Systems) e a estratégia, e entender como o desenho do MACS se ajusta à estratégia de internacionalização e em que medida isso afeta o desenho do MACS. Para responder a este objetivo, foi realizado um estudo de caso numa empresa do setor de serviços. Os resultados sugerem que, num processo de internacionalização I-Model, o MACS deve ser usado em todo o processo de maneira diferenciada, permitindo que o output de informação responda a todas as necessidades. Estes resultados contribuem para o escasso conhecimento sobre MACS e o seu ajustamento à estratégia.

Given the multiple conceptual interpretations and meanings of landscapes, we argue that current research trends are good examples of what we can consider as postdisciplinary approaches, challenging both disciplinary and interdisciplinary models of analysis. This study aims to understand how and to what extent internationalisation processes (IP) affect Management Accounting and Control Systems (MACS), and how the latter contribute to the successful implementation of IP. A conceptual framework is developed from MACS research to highlight how the use and characteristics of accounting information influence the development of IP. Critical incident technique is used as a qualitative approach to understand the IP-MACS relationship. The findings suggest that the existence of MACS adjusted to the firm’s information needs can facilitate IP, providing crucial information, and leading to changes in some accounting tools. This study demonstrates an active (use) and passive (design) role for MACS and provides a first attempt to explore the IP-MACS relationship and its contribution to a successful IP. Este estudio tiene como objetivo comprender cómo y en qué medida el proceso de internacionalización (IP) afecta a los Sistemas de Contabilidad y Control de Gestión (MACS), y cómo contribuye a una implementación exitosa de IP. Se desarrolla un marco conceptual a partir de la investigación de MACS para destacar cómo el uso y las características de la información contable influyen en el desarrollo del IP. La técnica del incidente crítico se utiliza como un enfoque cualitativo para comprender la relación IP-MACS. Los resultados sugieren que la existencia de MACS ajustada a las necesidades de información de la empresa puede facilitar el IP, proporcionando la información crucial e implica cambios en algunas herramientas de contabilidad. Este estudio evidencia un rol activo (uso) y pasivo (diseño) de MACS y proporciona un primer intento de explorar la relación IP-MACS y su contribución a una implementación exitosa de IP.

Developments in social robotics raise the prospect of robots coaching and interacting with patient during rehabilitation training assuming a role of a trainer. This raises questions regarding the acceptance of robots in this role and more specifically, to what extent the robot should be anthropomorphic. This paper presents the results of an online experiment designed to evaluate the user acceptance of Socially Assistive Robots (SARs) as rehabilitation trainers, and the effect of anthropomorphism on this matter. User attitudes were surveyed with regards to variations of the robot’s anthropomorphism as a rehabilitation trainer. The results show that 1) participants are accepting towards SAR-assisted rehabilitation therapies, 2) higher anthropomorphism is generally preferred but does not affect patient’s acceptance towards such therapy and technology. Qualitative data brings insight to patient technology acceptance, needs for rehabilitation training and the effect of anthropomorphism.

BACKGROUND: In situ magnetic separation (ISMS) has emerged as a powerful tool to overcome process constraints such as product degradation or inhibition of target production. In the present work, an integrated ISMS process was established for the production of his-tagged single chain fragment variable (scFv) D1.3 antibodies ("D1.3") produced by E. coli in complex media. This study investigates the impact of ISMS on the overall product yield as well as its biocompatibility with the bioprocess when metal-chelate and triazine-functionalized magnetic beads were used. RESULTS: Both particle systems are well suited for separation of D1.3 during cultivation. While the triazine beads did not negatively impact the bioprocess, the application of metal-chelate particles caused leakage of divalent copper ions in the medium. After the ISMS step, elevated copper concentrations above 120 mg/L in the medium negatively influenced D1.3 production. Due to the stable nature of the model protein scFv D1.3 in the biosuspension, the application of ISMS could not increase the overall D1.3 yield as was shown by simulation and experiments. CONCLUSIONS: We could demonstrate that triazine-functionalized beads are a suitable low-cost alternative to selectively adsorb D1.3 fragments, and measured maximum loads of 0.08 g D1.3 per g of beads. Although copper-loaded metal-chelate beads did adsorb his-tagged D1.3 well during cultivation, this particle system must be optimized by minimizing metal leakage from the beads in order to avoid negative inhibitory effects on growth of the microorganisms and target production. Hereby, other types of metal chelate complexes should be tested to demonstrate biocompatibility. Such optimized particle systems can be regarded as ISMS platform technology, especially for the production of antibodies and their fragments with low stability in the medium. The proposed model can be applied to design future ISMS experiments in order to maximize the overall product yield while the amount of particles being used is minimized as well as the number of required ISMS steps.

The legal systems deriving from the civil law system, law is used as the primary source of law, based on legal positivism, including the Brazilian legal system, with a tradition dating back to antiquity and with strong influence of French law. In contrast, the common law system, also known as the English system, to designate common law in England, by virtue of local customs, is a judge-made-law. Based on a historical-bibliographic research, the present article aims to present the two systems above and the question of judicial precedent in the Brazilian legal system for the purpose of demonstrating the distinction between the two systems., Os ordenamentos jurídicos decorrentes do sistema da civil law, utiliza-se a lei como fonte primária do direito, pautados no positivismo jurídico, inclusive o ordenamento jurídico brasileiro, com tradição que remonta desde a antiguidade e com forte influência do direito francês. Em contrapartida, o sistema da common law, também conhecido como sistema inglês, para designar direito comum na Inglaterra, em virtude dos costumes locais, é um judge-made-law. Partindo uma pesquisa histórico-bibliográfica, o presente artigo visa apresentar os dois sistemas acima e a questão do precedente judicial no ordenamento jurídico brasileiro para o fim demonstrar a distinção entre os dois sistemas.

Emerging pathogens threaten aquaculture industries worldwide. There is urgency to become better prepared and meet these challenges, as aquaculture is growing rapidly and will contribute increasingly to food security. There are important Pacific oyster production areas today as yet unchallenged by emergent OsHV-1 microvariants, notably in the Americas, and to these areas the viruses are an immediate threat.The ICES Workshop on Emerging Mollusc Pathogens addressed fundamental questions regarding capabilities (expertise, infrastructure) and communication (among the pathology community, regulation, and industry). We sought to identify areas warranting investment and support to manage emerging diseases in shellfish aquaculture industries, and to provide justification for resources to be directed to these areas for more effective management of shellfish health. Thirty-six priorities were identified spanning four areas: i) improving communication and frameworks; ii) essential infrastructure and expertise; iii) key research priorities; and iv) the central role of husbandry in shellfish aquaculture health management. Improving communication in every regard was recognized as the greatest need. Better coordinating efforts, improving data sharing, and improving trust on the part of industry to create buy-in and improve reporting were among identified priorities. Regulatory frameworks were recognized as needing to be flexible, given the often urgent need to act with incomplete information when a disease emerges.For essential infrastructure and expertise the workshop emphasized the continued importance of traditional fields such as pathology, bacteriology and virology, which remain foundational to aquaculture health management. Maintaining laboratory capacity is critical, in distribution as well as technologically: there is value in maintaining not just national or pan-national laboratories but provincial governmental and academic labs too, which can be more intimately engaged with local producers, and familiar with local environments. Disease challenge models and facilities were additionally identified as essential for testing hypotheses, as was expertise in epidemiology, which is sharply limited for marine systems.Discussion of key research priorities highlighted the value of long-term studies for understanding infection patterns; for appreciating dynamics like resistance and tolerance evolution versus virulence evolution; and for understanding effects of changing environments. The importance of improving ecological and evolutionary perspective in general was emphasized, as was the need to develop strategies for monitoring the diversity of potential pathogens. Establishment of mol-luscan cell lines for viral work would be a particularly valuable tool.Aquatic animal husbandry offers myriad opportunities to control pathogens. Understanding inter-sections of disease with aquaculture production for different host-pathogen systems requires continued research investment. Focused investment is also required to pursue strategies emerging from this research, including disease resistance breeding. Tighter collaboration among practical aquaculture scientists and breeders and pathologists should be promoted.Finally, funding was recognised as a continuing challenge. Priorities of donors and funding agencies do not always match commercial and health management priorities; basic surveillance is a key area difficult to support. Short funding timelines challenge our ability to address key questions and challenges, including breeding to control diseases. And there is little funding for truly trans-national, collaborative research. Managing diseases to support aquaculture growth is a global problem that demands science that is equally global, which requires the capacity to build broad international collaborations. It would be immensely beneficial for sustainable aquaculture development if trans-national research initiatives in aquatic animal health and other aquaculture related fields could be established to support innovation in this area in the future.

L'impact local et régional de l'arrivée des Portugais sur la côte orientale africaine au début du XVIe siècle est indéniable soit parce qu’ils ont introduit dans la région de nouvelles façons de commerce et de vie, ou parce qu'ils ont contribué à la divulgation d´informations sur des terres et des gens jusque-là inconnues dans le monde européen ; à savoir, sur les royaumes africains et chefferies des régions plus australes qui, néanmoins, par le biais des marchands musulmans, faisaient déjà partie du réseau commercial maritime de l’Océan Indien bien avant l'arrivée des Portugais. Pour les réseaux musulmans, ce fut le début de la fin d'une longue période de suprématie incontestable dans l'océan Indien et ils ont réagi immédiatement en appelant à la résistance armée contre les nouveaux arrivants, les intrus et violents Portugais (Al-Malibari, cit. in Ho, 2004, p. 222). Pour les Portugais, ce fut le début d'un processus de contacts et d'échanges indispensables à la consolidation de la présence portugaise dans l'Océan Indien et à la construction de l'Empire Portugais. Ils croyaient que leur droit de contrôler l'Océan Indien était incontestable. La violence serait utilisée si nécessaire et bientôt, l'Océan Indien se transforma en «arène de géo-stratégie militaire et commerciale» (Ho, 2004, p. 217). L'impact du conflit entre les Portugais et les musulmans a été tellement important qu'il est devenu un élément clé de l'histoire du XVIe siècle de cette région, en oubliant souvent que, au cœur de cette situation, il y avait les africains. Et que ces derniers, non seulement avaient un rôle à jouer dans ce conflit, mais ils ont été les premiers à en subir les conséquences. Dans ce contexte, le but de cet article est d'essayé de comprendre soit la réaction des Africains aux changements découlant de l’arrivée des Portugais dans la région, soit la dynamique des sociétés africaines en face d’une situation conflictuel qui a affecté toute la région.

El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objeto, efectuar un análisis de estudio de gobiernos locales, es el caso del Gobierno Regional de Moquegua, describiendo el Método de Gestión de Riesgos, para la viabilidad de los Proyectos de Inversión Pública del sector Salud, basado en la Metodología del PMBOK. Para tal fin, se plantea conocer la metodología de priorización , formulación y evaluación de proyectos que permita implementar proyectos de calidad, en forma oportuna y confiable, en consecuencia la optimización eficiente de los recursos públicos, toda vez que en estos últimos años se ha podido observar que existen varios proyectos de preinversión que han sido Viables, luego reformulados, algunos no lograron la viabilidad y otros posterior a la viabilidad quedaron inactivos por diversos factores de riesgo y la continuidad de estas inadecuadas prácticas conlleva al incremento del tiempo y costos del proyecto. Con estas premisas, surge la idea de plantear un diseño de Plan de Gestión de Riesgos para formular y evaluar los proyectos de inversión pública, con la finalidad de disminuir la probabilidad de riesgos negativos y aumentar la probabilidad de éxito. O resgate histórico pode ser uma forma eficaz de unir uma comunidade, despertar nela o sentimento de pertencimento ao local que vive, e possibilitar ações futuras. Assim, o estudo teve o objetivo de recuperar a memória histórica acerca da Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Escada, a partir da perspectiva da história dos saberes psicológicos, com foco nos impactos psicossociais para a comunidade do bairro. A Ermida se localiza no bairro da Escada, no Subúrbio Ferroviário de Salvador, e foi fundada no século XVI. O método histórico utilizado na pesquisa consistiu na coleta, organização, interpretação e análise de fontes primárias e secundárias, tendo em vista: a Ermida nas fontes primárias; a Escada nas tradições populares; e o Significado simbólico da Escada. A partir da análise dos dados, tem-se a hipótese que a Ermida carrega significações culturais e proporciona vivências psíquicas ligadas às experiências religiosas, que contribuem para a afirmação da identidade.Palavras-Chave: memória; pertencimento; Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Escada; Salvador

AQUA 2018, #WeRAquaculture we are the producers and investors, the scientists and technical advisors, the legislators and educators, the students, civil society organizations and consumers of farmed aquatic products, 25-29 August 2018, Montpellier, France, The presence of Vibrio aestuarianus has been associated to mortality events in pre-commercial and commercial Crassostrea gigas Pacific Oyster in recent years in France and Ireland. However, no mortality events associated to this pathogen has been detected in the Mediterranean. In May 2017, when temperatures were around 20 ºC, C. gigas cultures in the Ebro bays (Alfacs and Fangar) experimented for the first time a massive mortality event of commercial size oyster. Different analyses for detecting the presence of pathogens (qPCR Saulnier et al. 2009 V. aestuarianus/ V. splendidus; qPCR Webb et al. 2007 herpesvirus OsHv-1), as well as presence of contaminants, were performed. Retrospective samples from 2016 were also studied. Results regarding presence of pathogens pointed out the detection of 22+/30 V. aestuarianus positive individuals for oysters with 50% mortality collected in April 2016 (EFCgAbr16), as well as 9+/30 positive individuals in May 2017 adult oyster mass mortality (FmCgMa17). Furthermore, in this last sample the presence of V. splendidus clade was also observed, however similar results were also observed in oyster with no mortality. The V. aestuarinus presence was corroborated by the Spanish National Reference Laboratory (CSIC-Vigo) on samples with mortalities collected from the same bay one month later. Results on contaminant analysis revealed the presence of metolachlor (organitrogen pesticide), bentazone (insecticide), methylparaben (endocrine disruptors), with levels ranging from less than 1 ng/g dry weight (dw) to 10 ng/g dw for both oysters experiencing mortality and with no mortality. Furthermore, esterase activities indicative of OP pesticide exposure did not suggest neurotoxicity signs caused by these compounds. Those results do not support association of contaminants with the studied mortality events and the cause seems of pathogenic aetiology. Present results indicate the first detection of Vibrio aestuarianus associated to commercial Crassostrea gigas mortality in the Ebro Delta shellfish culture site, at the Catalan Mediterranean coast, as well as for Mediterranean oyster culture in general. First sample detected positive dates from April 2016 and had been immersed in the Ebro Delta two weeks earlier, coming from French Atlantic waters. Those samples are now being further studied by histology to discard other potential pathogens involved to the mortality episodes. In the case of commercial adult oyster mortality in May 2017 (FmCgMa17), the potential influence of a pathogenic V. splendidus strain being also involved cannot be discarded, The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union's H2020 Framework Programme under grant agreement no 678589 (VIVALDI project) and from the Spanish Government with the INIA E-RTA2015-00004-00-00 project (EMERGER). This article addresses the local and regional impact of the settlement of the Portuguese in Sofala, Mozambique, in the 16th century. Using the documental archive sources on the Sofala coast we highlight the specificity of the interaction between the Portuguese and the local communities, the importance of the “non-official” strategies used by the Portuguese in order to be accepted by the local chieftaincies, the impact of their integration into the local and regional networks and how their attitude formed new geographies of power in the area, while exposing political, economic, social, cultural and religious dichotomies. Focusing our attention on these aspects we make new contributions to the analysis of the Sofala region in the 16th century for a better understanding of its role in the African and Indian Ocean trading networks in the Portuguese empire, mostly based in informal economic and political control and thus pretty close to the concept of "shadow empire".

The present volume sets forth to analyse illustrative aspects of the deep-rooted immersion of the populations of the eastern coasts of Africa in the vast network of commercial, cultural and religious interactions that extend to the Middle-East and the Indian subcontinent, as well as the long-time involvement of various exogenous military, administrative and economic powers (Ottoman, Omani, Portuguese, Dutch, British, French and, more recently, European-Americans).

Defining and implementing borderlines in southern Mozambique was not a homogeneous process. Although resulting from the need to specify the different spheres of European influence in the region and ensure the effective occupation of the areas historically attributed to Europeans, each border section was discussed separately and had its own process, which cannot be considered as automatically resulting from the Berlin Conference (1885). Using the documents produced by the Commission of Borders Delimitation involved in the border definition between the former district of Lourenço Marques and the Maputaland (AmaThongaland), this article discusses how this process was implemented and its resulting impacts, particularly the division of the AmaThonga territories, in 1887, as this decision meant that the territories north of the river Maputo stayed under Portuguese sovereignty, while those south of the river would be, from then on, under British rule., A definição e implementação das fronteiras no Sul de Moçambique não foi um processo homogêneo. Com efeito, embora tenha resultado da necessidade de especificar as diferentes esferas de influência Europeia na região e de garantir a ocupação efetiva das áreas historicamente atribuídas aos Europeus, cada troço de fronteira discutido teve um processo próprio, impossível de se afirmar como automaticamente decorrente da Conferência de Berlim (1885). Tendo como base a documentação produzida pela Comissão de Delimitação de Fronteiras diretamente envolvida no processo de definição da fronteira entre o antigo distrito de Lourenço Marques e a Maputolândia (Reino dos AmaThongas), pretende-se analisar tanto a forma como este processo foi implementado, como os impactos que dele resultaram, designadamente a divisão do Reino dos AmaThongas, em 1887, implicando que os territórios a norte do Rio Maputo ficassem sob soberania Portuguesa e os a sul deste rio, sob soberania Britânica.

Para la mayoría de los territorios insulares el turismo representa la principal actividad económica en términos de generación de ingresos y creación de empleo. Pero debido a su pequeño tamaño y sus condiciones de aislamiento, las islas son bastante vulnerables a impactos ambientales y sociales negativos que el turismo puede conllevar. Por ello, es vital planificar y gestionar el desarrollo del turismo con el fin de alcanzar objetivos de sostenibilidad. Son precisamente los criterios de sostenibilidad, los que, aplicados a un desarrollo turístico, hacen de éste un modelo de gestión que no altera las condiciones del territorio. Por ello, la Isla de Pascua, que se está viendo inmersa en un proceso de desgaste y fragilidad debidos a la presión del turismo, es el objeto de estudio de este trabajo. Constituye el escenario de una serie de problemas que amenazan al ecosistema de la isla, incluso que aceleran el deterioro del patrimonio arqueológico, cultural y social. Las principales fuentes de dicho deterioro son: el aumento del turismo, el crecimiento de la población y el comercio, derivando a su vez en problemas que afectan a la eliminación de residuos, la calidad del agua y del aire, o la pérdida de biodiversidad. Un factor importante a tener en cuenta, es que la sociedad Rapa Nui gira en torno al turismo, toda la actividad de la isla está relacionada directa o indirectamente con la principal fuente de crecimiento económico. No obstante, el modelo actual de turismo y el modo en el que se ha venido desarrollando a lo largo de décadas ya no resulta sostenible, lo que hace que se encuentre en riesgo de que se produzca el colapso.

Uma vez que abordam a experiência amorosa do ponto de vista feminino, as cantigas de amigo têm sido comummente inseridas, nos estudos da especialidade, no conjunto genérico e heterogéneo da “canção de mulher” medieval, que abrange, por exemplo, as kharjas moçárabes, as frauenlieder alemãs, as cansos das trobairitz e também as pastorelas, as albas e as chansons de toile, compostas tanto por troubadours provençais como pelos trouvères do Norte de França. Todavia, embora do ponto de vista da ficção textual se afigure pertinente a inclusão da cantiga de amigo no corpus da chanson de femme, será realmente viável comparar composições de voz feminina escritas por homens com textos efetivamente redigidos por mulheres (como é o caso das cansos das trobairitz)? Reformulando a questão, até que ponto é que nas cantigas de amigo a autoria masculina se repercute na formulação dos textos e influencia a sua análise? Partindo de uma reflexão fundamentada em exemplos textuais pertinentes e na oposição cunhada por Pierre Bec entre “féminité textuelle” e “féminité génétique”, tentaremos, então, perceber quais as consequências da não coincidência de género biológico entre autor e sujeito poético nas cantigas de amigo. publishersversion published

A desertificação dos centros urbanos das cidades e a crescente sensibilização para a necessidade de preservar, modernizar e dinamizar as zonas históricas, permitiu passar a encarar a reabilitação como base de um novo paradigma de desenvolvimento urbano assente na sustentabilidade e na identidade cultural do local onde se insere. Entretanto, a evolução do mercado imobiliário -- estagnação da construção de novas casas e melhoria das condições de arrendamento -- a par do incremento dos apoios estatais à reabilitação, estão a permitir dar corpo de uma forma mais organizada e consistente à reabilitação dos centros históricos. Meanwhile, the current real estate market with stagnation in the construction of new houses and the improving rental conditions, alongside with the increase in state funds towards rehabilitation, are allowing to shape in a more consistent manner the rehabilitation of historical centres. The protein, which is robust and non-stick, resembles structures found in many eukaryotic extracellular-matrix proteins. Cells grown on the natural polymer cannot adhere and grow poorly; however, when cell-adhesion motifs are inserted into the protein, the cells proliferate.

Neste artigo apresentamos alguns resultados de uma pesquisa de mestrado cujo objetivo foi investigar as potencialidades pedagógicas da História da Matemática, em salas de aula de Matemática de estudantes do Ensino Fundamental, tomando como referencial uma perspectiva de aprendizagem situada. A investigação foi desenvolvida em turmas de 7º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública de Belo Horizonte, nas quais foram realizadas, em um trabalho cooperativo com a professora, algumas atividades relacionadas à história dos números inteiros. A análise do material empírico evidenciou, nas atividades envolvendo a História da Matemática, uma participação crescente por parte dos estudantes. A pesquisa também mostrou que a História da Matemática foi fundamental para a promoção das mudanças de participação observadas, contribuindo, assim, com a aprendizagem dos alunos.

In this work the effect of pre-treatments on the physical properties of fresh kiwi was studied. For that, a set of tests using chemical pretreatments was used, in which the samples were subjected to aqueous solutions of ascorbic acid and potassium metabisulfite at concentrations of 0.25% and 1% (w/v) for periods of 30 and 60 minutes, in order to understand the implications of the treatments in the color and texture of the kiwi as compared to its original properties. The results showed that the kiwi treated with ascorbic acid changed its color very intensively when compared to the fresh product, and this trend was intensified after storage. Contrarily, when potassium metabisulfite was used, the changes in color were quite negligible right after the treatment and even lower after the storage period of 6 days under refrigeration. After the treatments with both solutions, the kiwi texture was drastically changed, diminishing hardness considerably and increasing elasticity for all treatments. The same could be observed after six days of refrigeration.

The objective of the present work was to develop an innovative food prod- uct with nutritional properties as well as appealing organoleptic quali- ties. For this a jam was prepared on a basis of pear or apple, to which was added the water from boiling beetroot, without the addition of any con- servatives. Five different jams were produced: pear jam, pear with beetroot, apple, apple with beetroot and finally apple with beetroot and cinnamon. The preparation of the products involved several trials until the optimum recipe was found. The final products were then submitted to sensorial analysis that revealed the panelists preference for the jam with apple, beetroot and cinnamon. Additionally, some chemical components were evaluated to characterize the product in terms of fat, sugars and antioxidant activity, being this one of the most important, given the inter- est of utilizing the antioxidant properties of the beetroot to produce a jam enriched with antioxidants. The results obtained revealed that the apple jam with beetroot and cinnamon had a low sugar content and a high anti- oxidant activity, enhancing the potential health benefits associated with its consumption.

No início do século XX, Lourenço Marques surgia como auspiciosa metrópole na África Austral, sendo a ligação ao Transval apontada como principal responsável pelo seu desenvolvimento. Ali se misturavam gentes de todas as origens e ofícios tornando urgente a implementação de estruturas urbanas e políticas de saúde pública que respondessem às necessidades decorrentes deste surto populacional. No século XIX, as dificuldades na implementação dos Serviços de Saúde tinham evidenciado as consequências deste crescimento, dando origem a reformas e medidas que, não raro, se revelaram insuficientes ou inadequadas às condições tropicais. Doenças endémicas e epidémicas encontravam em Lourenço Marques um meio propício à sua proliferação e, no início de 1900, procuraram-se e testaram-se estratégias de combate às principais doenças que implicaram o investimento no reforço de medidas preventivas e num número significativo de obras públicas e saneamento. Porém, frequentemente, mais do que atuar na profilaxia destas doenças, relegaram-nas para a periferia, acentuando dicotomias e desigualdades. Utilizando documentação da Direção dos Serviços de Saúde e da Direção de Obras Públicas este artigo examina a eficácia e os resultados dessas medidas, designadamente no referente à assistência médica ao indígena, no âmbito da medicina tropical e da implantação do sistema colonial em Moçambique., In the early 20th century, Lourenço Marques emerged as a promising metropolis in southern Africa being the relation with the Transvaal pointed as the main responsible for its development. Therein mingled people of all backgrounds and crafts making imperative to implemente urban structures and public health policies to respond the needs arising from this population outbreak. In the 19th century, the difficulties in implementing the Health Services had shown the main consequences of this growth, leading to reforms and legislation that often proved to be inadequate or inappropriate to tropical conditions. Endemic and epidemic diseases found in Lourenço Marques favorable conditions to their proliferation and, as early as 1900, different strategies were considered and tested to combat major diseases. These strategies involved investment in preventive measures and public and sanitation works but, most times, rather than acting in a prophylactic way, they contribute to relegate diseases to the city’s periphery, accentuating dichotomies and social inequality. Using the documents of the Health Services and the Public Works Services, this article address the effectiveness and results of these measures, particularly with regard to the indigenous medical care, in the scope of Tropical Medicine and the implementation of the colonial system in Mozambique.

Metalloproteases have evolved in a vast number of biological systems, being one of the most diverse types of proteases and presenting a wide range of folds and catalytic metal ions. Given the increasing understanding of protein internal dynamics and its role in enzyme function, we are interested in assessing how the structural heterogeneity of metalloproteases translates into their dynamics. Therefore, the dynamical profile of the clan MA type protein thermolysin, derived from an Elastic Network Model of protein structure, was evaluated against those obtained from a set of experimental structures and molecular dynamics simulation trajectories. A close correspondence was obtained between modes derived from the coarse-grained model and the subspace of functionally-relevant motions observed experimentally, the later being shown to be encoded in the internal dynamics of the protein. This prompted the use of dynamics-based comparison methods that employ such coarse-grained models in a representative set of clan members, allowing for its quantitative description in terms of structural and dynamical variability. Although members show structural similarity, they nonetheless present distinct dynamical profiles, with no apparent correlation between structural and dynamical relatedness. However, previously unnoticed dynamical similarity was found between the relevant members Carboxypeptidase Pfu, Leishmanolysin, and Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A, despite sharing no structural similarity. Inspection of the respective alignments shows that dynamical similarity has a functional basis, namely the need for maintaining proper intermolecular interactions with the respective substrates. These results suggest that distinct selective pressure mechanisms act on metalloproteases at structural and dynamical levels through the course of their evolution. This work shows how new insights on metalloprotease function and evolution can be assessed with comparison schemes that incorporate information on protein dynamics. The integration of these newly developed tools, if applied to other protein families, can lead to more accurate and descriptive protein classification systems. publishersversion published

RESUMO - A segurança do doente constitui um dos grandes desafios dos cuidados de saúde do séc. XXI e é um componente essencial da qualidade em saúde. Os Cuidados de Saúde Primários representam o primeiro nível de contacto dos indivíduos, da família e da comunidade com o sistema de saúde. O objectivo deste trabalho foi aplicar o Diagrama de Ishikawa no estudo dos incidentes ocorridos numa unidade de Cuidados de Saúde Primários – Unidade de Saúde Familiar Marginal. A análise das causas dos incidentes relatados (n=379) mostrou que os factores associados à „tarefa‟ foram os mais frequentes (n=196) e os factores associados ao doente foram os menos frequentes (n=22).
