In this paper, seismic vulnerability appraisement, restoration, and consolidation plan of a 17th century masonry building (Rossi farm) with cultural and artistic value located in a small city near Naples are reported and discussed. This case study is presented and described, providing historical data and information about its actual conditions, spaces, functions and structures. Once the crack pattern detected in the building has been appropriately traced, the knowledge is deepened by performing all the three seismic risk assessment analyses proposed by the “Italian Guidelines for the assessment and reduction of seismic risk of cultural heritage". The first evaluation level is a qualitative and simplified tool allowing for the knowledge of the risk level of the building under study. Afterwards, the structure has been subjected to more accurate investigations dealing with its local mechanisms and global behaviour in the second and the third evaluation levels, respectively. In all three analysis phases, the results have shown the high vulnerability of the masonry farm. Based on these results, a consolidation plan, according to the Cultural Heritage Italian Guidelines suggestions, has been proposed.

The island of Lokrum, with surface area of 72 ha is a special reserve of forest vegetation, statutorily protected since 1948. The introduction of non-native plant species to the island began with the Benedictines in the 11th century. The diversity and abundance of the islands exotic flora was enriched by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, who started a planned cultivation of exotic plants, and the Dubrovnik seamen, who brought unusual plants from their voyages to far-away lands. The National Academy of Science and Art continued this tradition with the establishment of a Botanical Garden within the institutional frame of the Biological Institute in 1959. The purpose of the garden was to investigate the introduction and adaptation of tropical and sub-tropical plant species to our region’s typically Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Special attention was given to introducing species of importance to forestry, horticulture, and pharmaceutical use. These plants, mostly of Australian and American origin, were obtained as seeds through an active exchange program with botanical gardens from around the world. In 1991-1992, during Croatia’s War of Independence, the garden suffered more than 50 direct artillery hits that damaged many of its plants and destroyed much of its infrastructure. One particular casualty was the library’s collection of botanical treatises and research files, a large portion of which was lost in a fire sparked by one of these attacks. Restoration of the garden and its facilities began in earnest in 1993 and is still ongoing. Until now, the Lokrum Botanical Garden continuous to be an active part of the Institute for Marine and Coastal Research of the University of Dubrovnik. It covers an area of 3.3 ha, of which the exhibition section encompasses 1.6 ha with more than 450 plant species, mostly trees and shrubs. The most common plant family in the garden is the myrtle (Myrtaceae), counting over a hundred species. In addition to its botanical research mission, the Garden plays an important role in education and tourism considering that it attracts a large number of tourists and fans of nature each year.

Working with heritage is complex and projects often include scientific, structural, and documentary studies. Every step requires a systematic approach in which the contribution of the diverse experts that participate in the conservation of heritage assets is analysed following the logical sequence of the project execution phase. However, there are still no scientific contributions that record the complete process. A logical sequence, called a ‘systematic approach’ in this paper, should start with data acquisition using remote sensing techniques, the insertion of point cloud data in a Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment, ontologies applied to HBIM (Historic BIM), data classification, and evolution towards the Digital Twin (DT) concept. This paper also analyses the modelling workflow of a case study, the construction of a column base of the Santiago church in Jerez de la Frontera (Spain). This component has been automatically modelled from a mesh in an Autodesk Revit family and through an adaptive mesh process in ArchiCAD. Furthermore, one of the objectives was the data organisation by following and extending a standard data structure of the column components. This paper presents a novel holistic approach from data capture, analysis of complex geometry, construction of the semantically enriched parametric model, and exchange of it among all involved professionals in open source IFC formats. This systematic approach therefore makes it possible to obtain a validated DT for the life-cycle management of architectural elements.

Accuracy of measured data directly affects the protection of historical buildings and decision-making process. By processing laser scanning data, multipurpose 3d models can be obtained and all work and results can be shared via internet. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the building can be made with this data and it can be transferred to all related engineering and archeological fields. Despite the advantages of this technology, it has not been used widely yet in production of architectural projects. High cost of equipment and data processing software have been seen as main obstacles for widespread using of this technology. As well as, lack of integration of this topic into architectural education and less number of researcher studying in this field restrict the use of laser scanner. In this paper, evaluations were made in order to define the possibilities by using laser scanner technologies in process of restoration projects of which number is getting increased in last decades in Turkey. Positive and negative aspects of technology observed in survey process were given with a case study, a small traditional house in province of Aksaray and surroundings.

This study aims to determine the sediment changes and the trends in TOC, BC and TN before and after restoration of the mangrove wetland in the Jinjiang Estuary and to determine the effect of the wetland restoration process on the biogeochemical cycle of carbon and nitrogen. Fortified architecture between preservation and reuse strategies: the twentieth century restoration projects of Castelfranco in Finale LigureThe town of Finale Ligure, situated on the western coast of Liguria, was the site of the Del Carretto Marquisate until the sixteenth century. After that, it was under the control of the Spanish Crown (seventeenth century) and it has been an independent territory of the Republic of Genoa for a long time. The three castles were built on the top of Finale hills and they were the symbol of its independence. Gavone castle, established on the top of the historical town, has been the site of the Marquisate since the twelfth century. S. Giovanni castle was built by the Spanish in order to improve the town defensive system in the second half of the seventeenth century. Castelfranco, built by the Genoese in the fourteenth century, was rehashed many times by the Spanish and in the nineteenth century by the Savoia family. The three castles still recall these historical events and are therefore witnesses of the Finale present and past history. They are the result of the different transformations occurred over the centuries. In recent times, Castelfranco has been opened to the public and today it houses art exhibitions and cultural events. The restoration of the castle is the last step of a long-lasting rehabilitation project history that has been developed since the 1900s, when the Municipality suggested to turn it into a hotel. The article analyses the restoration projects of Castelfranco that have been carried out in the first half of the twentieth century, which had different methodologies and approaches. Though this study the article highlights the perception that the town had about the castle, identifying the changes in the balance between reuse and conservation strategies after the first Italian preservation laws.

This paper presents diverse methods of photogrammetric surveys and applications in restoration works. It compares the methods of survey and highlights their advantages for each specific project. All the methods used showed the great advantage of photogrammetry, compared with the traditional method of survey. There is a great reduction of working hours (field and office). The restitution may be drawn up at any time, with the required degree of rigour, and may be more or less detailed depending on the needs of the Project, case of the dismantling of Cais das Colunas, in Lisbon. The single-image photogrammetry allows the restitution of flat elements, without information on their depth, which is ideal for surveying facades. In the Conservation project of the vaults of Jerónimos monastery church, the traditional stereophotogrammetry had the advantage of stereoscopic vision, allowing a careful observation of the details, anomalies of the construction and a precise diagnostic in situ. Photogrammetry of multiple images is a much faster method for obtaining the 3D model, through a dense cloud of points, which is the most commonly used in recent restoration projects, for heritage documentation and three-dimensional visualisation of the object. This last method was used to survey the church facade of the monastery of Alcobaça. The survey of São Miguel – o - Anjo lighthouse in Porto, and all the other cases, proved that photogrammetric restitution allows a detailed mapping of the construction, necessary for a correct diagnostic of the anomalies to support the Conservation Project.

The South lagoon of Tunis, a shallow Mediterranean lagoon, had undergone an important restoration management (during the period 1998-2001), leading to structural and functional changes of this coastal ecosystem. In this work, a comprehensive study of sedimentary dynamic based on hydrodynamic data, granulometric analysis, mineralogy and impact evaluation is presented. Restoration project, especially the establishment of two groups of inlets gates of the channel of Rades and Tunis (recalibrated during the restoration management), imposed an east-west water flow direction, created from high tide submersion, with an average flow exchanged with the sea about 80 m3s-1. This current control local sediment sorting. The grain sizes analysis of superficial sediment shows that the lagoon bottom characterized by fine sediments ( < 63 μm, 50-90%). The sediment dynamic is controlled by the lagoon water currents inducing an east-west grain-size sorting. The extreme eastern side of the lagoon, close to the inlet gate, is lined by medium sand, moderately sorted and transported by saltation. The central and western sides of the lagoon are covered by fine sand, poorly sorted, and deposed in relatively calm hydrodynamic conditions. Mineralogical results reveal the following association: quartz (13 to 69%), biogenic calcite, (15 to 81%), aragonite (0 to 8%), pyrite (0 to 1,75%) and accessory magnetite, smectite, illite and kaolinite. The lagoon seems to be a protected zone as a result of restoration project that forms a physical barrier for sedimentary materials amount from Gulf of Tunis. This study aimed to investigate the socio-economic benefits stemming from bush clearing and restoration projects conducted in the Lephalale municipality, within the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The study was conducted at two sites: the D&rsquo, Nyala Nature Reserve and a nearby local village, Shongoane. A qualitative thematic content analysis approach and semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from 14 purposively selected participants between the ages of 22 and 55 (male = 9 and female = 5). The results indicated that the nature reserve benefited from the project via the improved visibility of the landscape features and game viewing, which made the reserve more attractive for tourists and resulted in increased revenue. The costs of buying feed for game could also be curbed since the grazing capacity increased. Since the nature reserve sourced temporary labour from the local village to execute the project, the community benefited in terms of members being able to earn a wage, which led to an improvement in their livelihoods. Another indirect benefit was the morale and behavioural changes observed amongst community members. It was obvious that the socio-economic benefits derived from projects such as these far outweigh the negatives and that there is every reason to institute projects of a similar nature elsewhere.

Time effects and human offenses threaten cultural heritage. The constant observation and periodic maintenance activities are the most suitable safeguarding solution: they can limit risk situations and facilitate interventions. Today, planned conservation is thus the best pattern to preserve the monuments as focused on small preventive restoration: actions organized and structured according to steady and regular monitoring. The preliminary survey, the interpretation of metric and material data and the subsequent verification of the evolution of instability and degradation phenomena based on a comparison with previous information, is a long and expensive activity if carried out by traditional systems. Otherwise, 3D laser scanning and image-based reconstruction methodologies – if properly applied within optimized operational practices – can allow both the systematic control of assets’ conditions and the evaluation of their health status and decay problems in a short time and with lower costs. This paper intends to show the validity of such an innovative methodology through a case study applied to the former church and convent of Sant'Agostino (St. Augustine) in Bergamo.

Tidal marsh restoration will be an important management issue in Guadalquivir Estuary in the near future. The Guadalquivir Estuary has been anthropologically modified several times, the river is bounded by embankments to protect rice and cotton plantations from tidal inundation, the meanders have been transformed into straight sections, about 80 % of the original marsh surface has been lost and approximately one-fourth of the total surface of the estuary is now part of two protected areas, one of them is a UNESCO, MAB Biosphere Reserve. A hypothetical restoration of tidal marshes will benefits different species and functions based on location, elevation, adjacent habitats, degree of hydrodynamic connectivity and would reduce the present high levels of turbidity. The restoration projects should be accompanied by studies for a better understanding of the environmental changes expected. A Large-scale construction of tidal marsh will change tidal dynamics, modify the tidal inundation regime and the freshwater flow over the surrounding areas. A hydrodynamic model has been developed to study changes in the tidal propagation and the flow regime due to a hypothetical marsh restoration. The model has been calibrated and the output has been validated with in situ water elevation and good agreement between modelled and real measurements have been obtained. A sensitivity test changing the size, locations from the estuary mouth and depth has been carried out to highlights impacts over the tidal propagation, flow regime, salinity intrusion and the tidal inundation regime. Our preliminary results show that the tidal elevation and the current speed will be considerably affected in the estuary. The model open the possibility to study interactions among the tidal marsh restoration project, Seville port operations, fisheries and agricultural activities. The study of the Norman tower in the abandoned village of Craco (MT) is part of a larger research aimed at the development of a project for conservation and enhancement of the entire urban organism which, complying with the nature of the area, can not take into account the geological critical condition and the consistent safety problem.

This Bachelor Thesis summarizes the current knowledge about peat mining and its effect on peatland and different methods used for restoration of mined peatlands . Different restoration approaches and their success are compared within this thesis. The thesis includes a project proposal on post-harvested peatland restoration.

Based on the same reference array, all stages of excavation were recorded in field (by means of plans, sections and elevations) using different methodologies to register points: traditional drawings, rectified photography and point cloud extractions, which allowed post-production of documents including all phases of construction and reuse together with their applicability to various computer programs.

This thesis postulates that stakeholders of underused historic religious structures are found among the following four groups: current and former congregants; the local neighbors; community organizations, whether cultural, religious or heritage; and public officials, both local and provincial. The thesis further asks: Are some stakeholders more important than others in determining the future of these at-risk buildings? For this thesis I examine the conservation of two historic Toronto synagogues, the Beach Hebrew Institute, and the Rodfei Sholem Anshei Kiev (commonly called the Kiever), during the 1970s and 1980s, and the involvement of multiple stakeholders in their continued existence. Using archival data, supplemented with stakeholder interviews where possible, I explore the application of strategic management concepts to an analysis of stakeholder involvement in heritage conservation. I also present a subjective assessment of the changing relative status (crowd, subjects, context setters, and players) of stakeholders over a twenty year period. My research identified a core group of long-time members that was strongly motivated to retain the property. But, in both cases, the congregation needed help to undertake urgent repairs and upgrades to its building. There were other stakeholders who played a role in ensuring that the properties continue to be functioning synagogues in 2016: congregants, neighbors, community organizations and public officials. Stakeholders differ in two significant characteristics, namely, interest and power. Not all stakeholders were equal, nor did their interest and power remain static over time. Stakeholder engagement is a dynamic process, influenced by each other’s actions, as well as the overall process.

This text presents two cases where the application of stratigraphic wall analysis represented, in addition to the possibility of constructing a hypothesis of construction phases, the tool used for the study of the materiality of the monument (materials, construction techniques, etc.) and a guideline for carrying out a more materiality-conscious restoration project and work. In the first case, the study of the Torres de Serranos, which are constructed entirely of stonework, the interpretation of material data meant a combination of the stratigraphic analysis method with chronotypological criteria. In the second case, a tower of the Homenaje del Castillo de Confrentes, in addition to stratigraphic wall analysis the restoration project was also carried out. On this particular occasion it was possible to reflect on the conservation of stratigraphic data as fundamental elements in the conservation of the building’s materiality.En el texto se presentan dos casos donde la aplicación del análisis estratigráfico constructivo representó, además de la posibilidad de realizar una hipótesis de fases constructivas, la herramienta utilizada para el estudio de la materialidad del monumento (materiales, técnicas constructivas, etc.) y la guía para la realización de un proyecto de restauración y una obra más consciente de la materialidad misma. En el primer caso, el estudio de las Torres de Serranos, enteramente construidas en fábrica de sillería, la interpretación de los datos materiales implicó la combinación del método del análisis estratigráfico con criterios cronotipológicos. En el segundo caso, en la torre del Homenaje del Castillo de Cofrentes, además del análisis estratigráfico constructivo se realizó el proyecto de restauración. En esa ocasión se tuvo por tanto la posibilidad de reflexionar sobre la conservación de los datos estratigráficos como elementos fundamentales de la conservación de la materialidad del edificio.

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2008, Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2008, 1855 yılında inşa edildiği ve İstanbul’daki ilk kargir konak olduğu sanılan Abdüllatif Suphi Paşa Konağı, Fatih İlçesi Babahasan Alemi Mahallesi’nde Horhor Caddesi üzerinde yer almaktadır. Tanzimat Dönemi’nin önemli paşa konaklarından biri olan yapı, bir sivil mimarlık örneği olmasının yanı sıra devlet işlerinin görüşüldüğü idari bir yapı olma özelliğini de taşımaktadır. 1949–50 yıllarında yapılan kapsamlı bir onarım sayesinde, konak pek çok özgün detayını koruyarak günümüze ulaşmıştır. Tez kapsamında, İstanbul Üniversitesi Deontoloji ve Tıp Tarihi Anabilim Dalı tarafından kullanılan yapının onarımına ilişkin teknik müdahaleleri belirlemek, daha aktif olarak kullanımı sağlayacak bir işlev önermek ve konağın tarihini aydınlatmak amaçlanmıştır. Bu nedenle öncelikle yapının 1/50 ölçekli rölöveleri çizilerek ayrıntılı bir betimlemesi yapılmıştır. Eşzamanlı olarak yapı ve çevresine ilişkin görsel ve yazılı kaynaklar taranarak, konağın geçirdiği değişimler belirlenmiş ve ilk yapıldığı dönemi gösteren restitüsyon önerisi hazırlanmıştır. Son olarak da, yapı için gerekli müdahaleler araştırılmış ve yeni işlev programını içeren restorasyon projesi geliştirilmiştir. Yeni işlevle, konağın bugüne ulaşmasında büyük payı olan mevcut kullanıcıları tutulmuş, buna ek olarak konağın aktif şekilde kullanıldığı, yaşayan bir dönem yapısı olarak geleceğe aktarılmasını sağlayacak bir program önerilmiştir., Abdullatif Suphi Pasha mansion, which is supposed to be the first masonry mansion in Istanbul constructed in 1855, is situated in Horhor Street at Babahasan Alemi quarter of Fatih district. The mansion is an administrative building where state affairs were discussed besides being an important civil architecture sample of Tanzimat period. The mansion could survive with its original details thanks to the extensive restoration work conducted in 1949-50. The reason for choosing the mansion as the subject of this thesis is to document the building while determining the technical interventions for its restoration, to propose an active usage with a new function and to shed light to its history. Therefore, the mansion’s 1/50 scaled survey drawings are prepared and a detailed description is made. In the same time, written and visual sources are searched and after the mansion’s changes are determined, the restitution proposal showing the first construction period is prepared. Finally, the necessary interventions for the mansion are searched and the restoration project that includes new functional program is developed. With the new function, the present users who take care of the mansion are kept, but some changes that will help to carry over the mansion as a living historic structure to the future are proposed., Yüksek Lisans, M.Sc.

The first part of this text presents the methodological foundations used by the authors in the application of stratigraphic wall analysis. In recent years, several Italian and Spanish researchers have developed the methodology of stratigraphic wall analysis applied to archaeology. The authors of this text follow the general lines of this methodology in an attempt to develop for themselves a series of specific applications and adaptations according to the demands of the cases studied. The second part of the text presents a case of application of stratigraphic wall analysis in the study of the church of San Pedro in Pobla de Benifassá. This is a general, full study of the building which can correctly illustrate the general methodology used by the authors. Furthermore, this case allows us to reflect on the value of stratigraphic wall analysis in relation to the historic-architectonic study of a building. En la primera parte de este texto, se presentan los fundamentos metodológicos que los autores utilizan en la aplicación del análisis estratigráfico constructivo. En los últimos años, diversos investigadores italianos y españoles han desarrollado la metodología del análisis estratigráfico constructivo aplicado a la arquitectura. Los autores del texto siguen las líneas generales de esta metodología intentando desarrollar por su parte una serie de aplicaciones y adaptaciones específicas según las exigencias de los casos estudiados. En la segunda parte del texto, se presenta un caso de aplicación del análisis estratigráfico constructivo, el estudio de la iglesia de San Pedro en la Pobla de Benifassá. Se trata de un caso de un estudio general y completo del edificio que puede ilustrar correctamente la metodología general utilizada por los autores. Además, el caso permite reflexionar sobre el valor del análisis estratigráfico constructivo en relación con el estudio histórico-arquitectónico de un edificio.
