Il tondo marmoreo bizantino rappresentante un imperatore che si trova appeso al muro di una casa privata in Campiello di Ca' Angaran, a fianco della basilica di San Pantalon, infatti, si trova in preoccupante stato di degrado dovuto agli agenti chimici esterni, a cominciare dallo smog. E' importante, per questo, cominciare con il processo di musealizzazione del manufatto.

The aim of this paper is to conduct a statistical analysis of the effects of the fillet radii on the dynamics of the falling plate using the nonintrusive spectral projection (NISP) method. The free fall of two-dimensional cards immersed in a fluid was studied using a deterministic and stochastic numerical approach. The motion is characterized by the fluid-body interaction described by coupling the Navier–Stokes and rigid body dynamic equations. The model’s predictions have been validated using both experimental and numerical data available in the literature. In the stochastic simulations, the fillet radius of the plate was considered a random variable characterized by a uniform probability density function introducing, in this way, some uncertainties in the plate’s trajectory. To take into account the uncertainties, we employed the NISP method based on polynomial chaos expansion. The analysis was focused on finding the ensemble mean trajectory and error bar for a confidence interval of 95 % for both tumbling and fluttering regimes.

In this work we propose the application of a radiation damage model based on the introduction of deep level traps/recombination centers suitable for device level numerical simulation of radiation detectors at very high fluences (e.g. 1÷2×1016 1-MeV equivalent neutrons per square centimeter) combined with a surface damage model developed by using experimental parameters extracted from measurements from gamma irradiated p-type dedicated test structures.

none 23 si A compact and modular X and gamma-ray imaging spectrometer (XGIS) has been designed as one of the instruments foreseen onboard the THESEUS mission proposed in response to the ESA M5 call. The experiment envisages the use of CsI scintillator bars read out at both ends by single-cell 25 mm2 Silicon Drift Detectors. Events absorbed in the Silicon layer (lower energy X rays) and events absorbed in the scintillator crystal (higher energy X rays and gamma -rays) are discriminated using the on-board electronics. A coded mask provides imaging capabilities at low energies, thus allowing a compact and sensitive instrument in a wide energy band (̃2 keV up to ̃20 MeV). The instrument design, expected performance and the characterization performed on a series of laboratory prototypes are discussed. The X and Gamma Imaging Spectrometer instrument on-board the THESEUS mission (selected by ESA in the framework of the Cosmic Vision M5 launch opportunity, currently in phase A) is based on a detection plane composed of several thousands of single active elements. Each element comprises a 4.5x4.5x30 mm 3 CsI(Tl) scintillator bar, optically coupled at both ends to Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs). The SDDs acts both as photodetectors for the scintillation light and as direct X-ray sensors. In this paper the design of the XGIS detection plane is reviewed, outlining the strategic choices in terms of modularity and redundancy of the system. Results on detector-electronics prototypes are also described. We report on the functional characterization of the first batch of 3D Double-Sided Double Type Column (3D-DDTC) detectors fabricated at FBK, Trento. This detector concept represents the evolution of the previous 3D-STC detectors towards full 3D detectors, and is expected to achieve a performance which is comparable to standard 3D detectors, but with a simpler fabrication process. Measurements were performed on detectors in the microstrip configuration coupled to the ATLAS ABCD3T binary readout. This paper reports spatially resolved signal efficiency tests made with a pulsed infrared laser setup and charge collection efficiency tests made with a Beta source.

The 3D silicon radiation detectors are very promising devices to be used in environments requiring extreme radiation hardness, such as the super-LHC experiment at CERN. A drawback of this detector is the very long and non-standard fabrication process, which makes the mass production of these devices very critical. A possible simplification of the manufacturing process relies on a new type of 3D architecture, called 3D-single-type-column detector, that we have introduced in previous works. In this paper we report on the fabrication process of the first batch of detectors and on selected results from the electrical characterization of 3D test structures, covering leakage current, capacitance and breakdown voltage measurements.

This paper concerns the study of sustainable construction materials applied on the "Health Post", a prototype for the primary health care situated in alienated areas of the world. It's suitable for social and climatic Sub-Saharan context; however, it could be moved in other countries of the world with similar urgent needs. The idea is to create a Health Post with local construction materials that have a low environmental impact and promote the local workforce allowing reuse of traditional building techniques lowering production costs and transport. Owing to their superior radiation hardness compared to planar detectors, 3D detectors are one of the most promising technologies for the LHC upgrade foreseen in 2017. Fondazione Bruno Kessler has developed 3D Double-side Double-Type Column (3D-DDTC) detectors providing a technological simplifications with respect to a standard 3D process while aiming at comparable detector performance. We present selected results from the electrical characterization of 3D-DDTC structures from the second batch made on p-type substrates, supported also by TCAD simulations.

In this paper we propose a portable instrument for alpha-particle detection based on a previously-developed BJT detector and a simple, IC-based readout electronics. Experimental tests of the BJT detector and readout electronics are reported. Numerical simulations are adopted to predict the performance enhancement achievable with optimized BJT detectors.

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) standards are under development for the next generation mobile communication systems. High peak data rates and high spectral efficiency are some of the requirements of these standards, which should also include Flexible Spectrum Usage (FSU) techniques for an efficient use of the limited available bandwidth (BW). Considering Non-Contiguous Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (NC-OFDM) as a possible FSU proposal for LTE/LTE-Advanced, in this paper an analysis of the effects of the RF imperfections —such as IQ imbalance, phase noise and non-linear power amplifier— on the downlink transmission in LTE/LTE-Advanced is presented. Two different aspects are pointed out. First, concerning NC-OFDM, it is shown that the RF transmitter causes an increase of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) in the subchannels not used for transmission, which means interference with the other systems using those subchannels. Second, concerning the high data rates and high spectral efficiency, it turns out that the 64-QAM rate 3/4, used to reach these requirements, is deeply affected by the RF transmitter imperfections.

Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Oct-28 OBJECTIVE: Mutations in the gene encoding phospholipase A(2) group VI (PLA2G6) are associated with two childhood neurologic disorders: infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) and idiopathic neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). INAD is a severe progressive psychomotor disorder in which axonal spheroids are found in brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. High globus pallidus iron is an inconsistent feature of INAD; however, it is a diagnostic criterion of NBIA, which describes a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders that share this hallmark feature. We sought to delineate the clinical, radiographic, pathologic, and genetic features of disease resulting from defective phospholipase A(2). METHODS: We identified 56 patients clinically diagnosed with INAD and 23 with idiopathic NBIA and screened their DNA for PLA2G6 mutations. RESULTS: Eighty percent of patients with INAD had mutations in PLA2G6, whereas mutations were found in only 20% of those with idiopathic NBIA. All patients with two null mutations had a more severe phenotype. On MRI, nearly all mutation-positive patients had cerebellar atrophy, and half showed brain iron accumulation. We observed Lewy bodies and neurofibrillary tangles in association with PLA2G6 mutations. CONCLUSION: Defects in phospholipase A(2) lead to a range of phenotypes. PLA2G6 mutations are associated with nearly all cases of classic infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy but a minority of cases of idiopathic neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation, and genotype correlates with phenotype. Cerebellar atrophy predicts which patients are likely to be mutation-positive. The neuropathologic changes that are caused by defective phospholipase A(2) suggest a shared pathogenesis with both Parkinson and Alzheimer diseases.
