Delayed intracranial hemorrhage is dangerous and not so rare. To prevent such an exacerbation, head trauma patients taking anticoagulants is recommended 24-48 hour observational admission despite of normal CT. Among delayed intracranial hemorrhage, delayed traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (DTSAH) is rare. Here, we show 82-year-old woman presented with head injury. She was alert and no abnormality was detected in initial CT. Four days after that she came again due to vertigo. The CT showed subarachnoid hemorrhage in sylvian fissure. She had atrium fibriation and anticoagulant. We experienced an infrequent DTSAH with anticoagulant. The appearance of symptom was delayed notably 96 hours. Clinicians should be aware that DTSAH can occur much later than previous studies about delayed intracranial hemorrhage expected and check coagulation despite no drug information.

We report the effect of a Cr layer on the glass substrate during the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by chemical vapor deposition. When Fe was used as a catalyst in the CNT growth, longer CNTs were obtained by increasing the thickness of the Cr layer. However, CNTs were not grown on the surface with a thick Cr film and Co or Ni catalyst. These results arise from a difference in the mechanism of CNT formation when using different catalyst metals.

Methods Dentate participants (dentate-group) and edentulous patients with mandibular two-implant overdentures (IOD-group) were recruited. First, the dentate-group chewed three different types of two-coloured gum (gum1-gum3) for 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 chewing cycles. Subsequently the number of chewing cycles with the highest intra- and inter-rater agreement was determined visually by applying a scale (SA) and opto-electronically (ViewGum©, Bland-Altman analysis). The ViewGum© software determines semi-automatically the variance of hue (VOH); inadequate mixing presents with larger VOH than complete mixing. Secondly, the dentate-group and the IOD-group were compared. Results The dentate-group comprised 20 participants (10 female, 30.3 ± 6.7 years); the IOD-group 15 participants (10 female, 74.6 ± 8.3 years). Intra-rater and inter-rater agreement (SA) was very high at 20 chewing cycles (95.00-98.75%). Gums 1-3 showed different colour-mixing characteristics as a function of chewing cycles, gum1 showed a logarithmic association; gum2 and gum3 demonstrated more linear behaviours. However, the number of chewing cycles could be predicted in all specimens from VOH (all p < 0.0001, mixed linear regression models). Both analyses proved discriminative to the dental state. Conclusion ViewGum© proved to be a reliable and discriminative tool to opto-electronically assess chewing efficiency, given an elastic specimen is chewed for 20 cycles and could be recommended for the evaluation of chewing efficiency in a clinical and research setting. Clinical Significance Chewing is a complex function of the oro-facial structures and the central nervous system. The application of the proposed assessments of the chewing function in geriatrics or special care dentistry could help visualising oro-functional or dental comorbidities in dysphagic patients or those suffering from protein-energy malnutrition. Objectives Chewing efficiency may be evaluated using cohesive specimen, especially in elderly or dysphagic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate three two-coloured chewing gums for a colour-mixing ability test and to validate a new purpose built software ViewGum © 2015 The Authors. Heavy-ion radiotherapy has a high curative effect in cancer treatment and also can reduce the burden on patients. These advantages have been generally recognized. Furthermore, a rotating gantry can irradiate a tumor with ions from any direction without changing the position of the patient. This can reduce the physical dose on normal cells, and is thus commonly used in proton radiotherapy. However, because of the high magnetic rigidity of carbon ions, the weight of the rotating gantry for heavy-ion therapy is about three-times heavier than those used for proton cancer therapy, according to our estimation. To overcome this issue, we developed a small and lightweight rotating gantry in collaboration with the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). The compact rotating gantry was composed of ten low-temperature superconducting (LTS) magnets that were designed from the viewpoint of beam optics. These LTS magnets have a surface-winding coil-structure and provide both dipole and quadrupole fields. The maximum dipole and quadrupole magnetic field of the magnets were 2.88 T and 9.3 T/m, respectively. The rotating gantry was installed at NIRS, and beam commissioning is in progress to achieve the required beam quality. In the three years since 2013, in a project supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), we have been developing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets with the aim of a further size reduction of the rotating gantry. To develop fundamental technologies for designing and fabricating HTS magnets, a model magnet was manufactured. The model magnet was composed of 24 saddle-shaped HTS coils and generated a magnetic field of 1.2 T. In the presentation, recent progress in this research will be reported.

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results of A-site ordered perovskite CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$. We have observed the clear band dispersions, which are shifted to the higher energy by 1.7 eV and show the band narrowing around 2 eV in comparison with the local density approximation calculations. In addition, the high energy multiplet structures of Cu 3$d^8$ final-states have been found around 8 - 13 eV. These results reveal that CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ is a Mott-type insulator caused by the strong correlation effects of the Cu 3$d$ electrons well hybridized with O 2$p$ states. Unexpectedly, there exist a very small spectral weight at the Fermi level in the insulator phase, indicating the existence of isolated metallic states., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

In order to evaluate the effect of specific immune response on prognosis in acute leukemia, we investigated the correlation between the lysis of autologous tumor cells (ATC) by lymphocytes and prognosis. Peripheral mononuclear cells (PMC) from most patients with acute leukemia in complete remission (CR) do not exhibit cytotoxic activity against fresh-frozen ATC, although they have adequate cytotoxic activity against K562 cells. When the large granular lymphocyte (LGL) fraction was used in this study, we observed lysis of ATC in 17 (43.6%) of 39 patients with acute leukemia (12 (42.9%) of the 28 patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and 5 (45.5%) of the 11 patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)). With regard to prognosis, the lytic activity of the LGL fraction did not reflect the duration of CR. The median CR duration in AML patients was 13 months for the lysis-positive group and 11 months for the lysis-negative group. No significant correlation was also found between lytic activity of the LGL fraction and overall survival in each patient. However, the lysis-positive group tended to have a longer survival, the median overall survival being 48 months for the lysis-positive group vs 12 months for the lysis-negative group. The prolonging of overall survival in the lysis-positive group was attributed to a high rate of induction of second remissions in this group. Long-term patient survival in the two groups did not differ.

We designed a post-induction therapy including intensive sequential therapy with non-cross-resistant drugs in an effort to prolong disease-free survival (DFS) for adults with acute myelogenous leukemia. Forty-five patients entered this study and 33 of 35 patients entering complete remission received the post-induction therapy. With a median follow-up for survivors of 3.5 years from complete remission, the actuarial 5-year DFS was 46% ± 19% (95% confidence interval). The five-year DFS for patients over 45 years of age was comparable to that for patients under 45 years of age (50% ± 26% vs 47% ± 28%). Furthermore, the actuarial 5-year DFS for patients who required two courses of induction therapy was comparable to that for patients who required only one course of induction therapy (45% ± 29% vs 50% ± 25%). The toxicity of post-induction therapy was tolerable and no patients died during complete remission.

Thirty-two patients with advanced non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) with aggressive histologic findings were treated with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, methotrexate with leucovorin rescue, bleomycin, vincristine, etoposide, ifosfamide, and prednisolone (CAMBO-VIP), in which presumably non-cross-resistant myelosuppressive and nonmyelosuppressive agents were administered during alternate weeks for 12 weeks. To ensure the high-dose intensity of the protocol, dose reduction and delay in treatment were minimized. Three patients were treated inadequately. Twenty-six (89.7%) of 29 evaluable patients had a complete response, and three had a good partial response. Relapse occurred in four patients, with a median follow-up of 29 months. The actuarial overall survival and disease-free survival were estimated to be 87.6% and 75.9%, respectively. The CAMBO-VIP treatment was well tolerated; myelosuppression was severe but transient and caused no serious infections. Side effects that affected dose intensity were oral ulceration, occurring in 28 patients, and blister formation under the thickened skin of palms and/or soles, followed by desquamation (5 patients). Hepatic toxicity was generally mild to moderate; it was severe in one patient. A 12-week regimen of CAMBO-VIP was effective for advanced NHL with aggressive histologic findings.

We present a novel phase diagram for the antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in Ce$_2$RhIn$_8$ probed by In-NQR studies under pressure ($P$). The quasi-2D character of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic state at $P$ = 0 evolves into a 3D character because of the suppression of antiferromagnetic order for $P > P_{\rm QCP}\sim$ 1.36 GPa (QCP: antiferromagnetic quantum critical point). Nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ measurements revealed that the superconducting order occurs in the $P$ range 1.36 -- 1.84 GPa, with maximum $T_c\sim$ 0.9 K around $P_{\rm QCP}\sim$ 1.36 GPa., 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PRB

We performed cytogenetic studies in a patient with treatment-related acute leukemia (t-AL) to identify the associated chromosomal changes. Metaphase analysis revealed a t(3;21)(q26;q22) translocation. Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) had been diagnosed 4 years earlier and the patient had received intensive induction chemotherapy and sequential post-induction therapy that included agents that targeted DNA-topoisomerase II (topo II). This case suggests an association between previous therapy with topo II inhibitors and development of t-AL associated with a balanced aberration involving the 3q26 and 21q22 bands.

We investigated whether a causal relationship exists between human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and skin rash resembling acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) following bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Isolation of HHV-6 was used to monitor active HHV-6 infection in this study. We analyzed 25 episodes of skin rash in 22 recipients. All recipients were seropositive for HHV-6 before BMT. The onset of skin rash started prior to 30 days post transplantation (group A) in 15 of 25 cases, but after that (group B) in the remaining 10 cases. Twenty-five skin tissue samples were obtained from 22 recipients. The HHV-6 genome was detected in four of 15 skin samples from group A, but not detected in those from group B. HHV-6 was isolated from 11 of 22 recipients around 2 to 3 weeks after BMT (range 14 to 28 days after BMT). HHV-6 was isolated at a time between 10 days before and after the onset of skin rash (skin rash-related viremia) in nine cases in group A. Meanwhile, no skin rash-related viremia was observed in group B. Of the four recipients with positive detection of HHV-6 genome in their skin tissue (group A), two had HHV-6 viremia at the same time. The association between the timing of HHV-6 infection and the onset of skin rash was analyzed statistically. HHV-6 viremia (skin rash-related viremia) was found in nine of 15 (60%) cases in group A, compared with none of 10 (0%) cases in group B. This difference was statistically significant (P = 0.008). Moreover, HHV-6 infection (skin rash-related viremia and/or positive detection of HHV-6 DNA in skin tissue) was demonstrated in 11 of 15 (73.3%) cases in group A, compared with none of 10 (0%) cases in group B (P = 0.001). Thus, this study suggests that HHV-6 may be involved in the development of skin rash in the first month after allogeneic BMT.

Although adrenal gland is one of the major target organs of angiotensin II (Ang II), the pathophysiological significance of the its receptor subtype has not been elucidated. We demonstrated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with Southern blot analysis mRNA expression of both AT1 and AT2 in human adrenal tissues of normal adrenocortical tissues, aldosterone-producing adenoma, Cushing's syndrome, and pheochromocytoma. Ang II-induced aldosterone secretion in vitro was suppressed only by 50% in the presence of selective AT1 antagonist CV-11974, while AT2 agonist CGP-42112 increased aldosterone secretion by 55% over the control. Ang II or CGP-42112 did not affect cortisol secretion. In addition, Ang II could stimulate aldosterone secretion in AT1a knockout mice both in the presence and absence of CV-11974. These results suggest that non-AT1 receptor subtype(s) including AT2, as well as AT1, is involved in the stimulation of aldosterone secretion from human adrenals.

The response of human acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) cells to four different hematopoietic growth factors (granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta), interleukin-3 (IL-3), and stem cell factor (SCF)) and the relationship of the proliferative response of the AML cells to treatment outcome were studied. Proliferative responses were analyzed in 79 patients with de novo AML and 19 patients with AML arising from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). In de novo AML, a positive proliferative response (stimulation index2) was seen in 65 to 75% of cases. AML cells arising from MDS had a much higher incidence of proliferative response to each growth factor (79 to 90%) and a much higher level of 3H-TdR incorporation. The relationship to treatment outcome was evaluated in 79 patients with de novo AML. The patients whose leukemic cells had a positive proliferative response to any growth factor, especially IL-3 and SCF, had a poorer outcome, ie a lower complete remission (CR) rate, shorter CR duration, and shorter survival. The outcome was particularly poor in patients whose leukemic cells had proliferative responses to all four or any of the growth factors, compared to patients whose leukemic cells had no response. This increased response may be a marker of poor prognosis in patients with AML.

We evaluated the in vitro proliferative response to exogenous IL-1 beta in terms of tritiated thymidine (3H-TdR) incorporation in leukemic cells obtained from 119 patients with various types of acute leukemia. The content of IL-1 beta in leukemic cells was measured by enzyme-amplified sensitivity immunoassay. We observed a significant proliferative response to exogenous IL-1 beta in leukemic cells from 27/66 patients with de novo AML, 1/29 patients with ALL, 2/3 patients with AUL, 8/12 patients with AML arising from MDS, 4/7 patients with myeloid crisis of CML, and 0/4 patients with lymphoid crisis of CML. Proliferation was marked in myeloid leukemic cells of a more premature stem cell origin. There were no significant differences in proliferative responses among the different FAB classes of de novo AML. The IL-1 beta content of leukemic cells was low in patients with lymphoid leukemia, but there was no significant difference among the various types of myeloid leukemia. There was no correlation between the proliferative response to exogenous IL-1 beta and the IL-1 beta content of leukemic cells. When we correlated the proliferative response to exogenous IL-1 beta with treatment outcome in patients with de novo AML, we found the rate of complete remission (CR) to be lower in those with a high proliferative response. We noted a longer duration of CR (p = 0.07) and of survival (p0.05) in patients with a low proliferative response. Thus, a high proliferative response to IL-1 beta in the cells of AML patients may indicate a poor prognosis.

We report the fabrication of single-crystalline La-doped EuO thin films with a Curie temperature (TC) of about 200 K, the highest among rare-earth compounds without transition metals. From first-principle band calculation and x-ray diffraction measurement, the observed increase in TC cannot be explained only by the increase in hybridization intensity due to lattice contraction and the increase in up-spin electrons of the Eu 5d state caused by the electron doping. Hybridization between the Eu 4f and donor states and/or Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yoshida interaction mediated by the doped La 5d state is a possible origin of the increase in TC.

In order to understand physical properties of the field-induced phase of a spin-gap system, we performed high-field and multifrequency electron-spin-resonance (ESR) measurements on single crystals of the S=1 quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet, namely, the Haldane magnet, Ni(C5H14N2)(2)N-3(PF6), abbreviated as NDMAP. This compound has an energy gap (Haldane gap) at zero field and one of the excited triplet branches goes down on applying magnetic fields, resulting in the gap closing at a critical field H-c around 5 T that is slightly different depending on the field direction. First, we studied the angular dependence of spin excitations below 14 T. Two sets of resonance modes caused by two types of Ni2+ chains in NDMAP are observed. These data are analyzed by comparing with a phenomenological field theory (PFT). The experimental results between H-c and about 12 T are well fitted with the calculated ones by the PFT, but the fitting above 12 T is not satisfactory. Therefore, we studied spin excitations at much higher magnetic fields up to about 55 T. Several ESR signals are observed above H-c for each crystallographic axis, and one or two of them survive in the high-field region above about 15 T. One mode approaches a paramagnetic resonance line at high fields and the other mode broadly changes with magnetic fields. These modes fit well with the conventional antiferromagnetic resonance modes with biaxial anisotropy. This result suggests that the quantum fluctuations are suppressed by strong magnetic field and the spin excitations change from a quantum nature to a classical one in high magnetic fields.

STJs are promising X-ray detectors as high energy resolution spectrometers due to the small excitation energy to break the Cooper pairs to product detectable electrons. The expected energy resolution is about 5 eV for a 6 keV incident X-rays (see review by Kraus et al. and Esposito et al.). We have developed a large area (178 × 178μm2) Nb/Al/AlOX/Al/Nb STJs (Kurakado et al. 1993) and series-connected STJs with a position resolution of 35μm for α particles (Kurakado 1997) at Nippon Steel Corporation. As a focal plane detector in future X-ray missions, we are developing STJs whose targert characteristics are; an energy resolution of 20 eV at 6keV, an effective area of 1 cm2, and position resolution of 100μm.

A study was conducted on twenty-four patients who underwent surgery for retinal detachment as to the clinical effect of acupuncture from the viewpoints of anesthetic dose, intraoperative changes in blood pressure and heart rate, postoperative analgesic state, nausea and vomiting. The patients were divided into two groups: group A, eleven patients receiving neuroleptanesthesia combined with acupuncture analgesia and group N, thirteen patients receiving usual neuroleptanesthesia without acupuncture. A significant difference was found in the dose of fentanyl, used as the narcotic, between group A (0.11 mg) and group N (0.48 mg). No difference was noted in blood pressure between the two groups, but it was high in group N in the postoperative period. There was no difference in heart rate between the two groups. Two patients from group A and five from group N required analgesics in the postoperative period. Nausea and vomiting were encountered in one patient in group A and three in group N. Therefore, it would seem that anesthesia in combination with acupuncture is capable of reducing the required dose of narcotic and offering more comfortable postoperative conditions than usual anesthesia alone.

We purified a mitochondrial GTP-binding protein, MTG33, from a particulate fraction of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells [Takeda, S., Sagara, Y., Kita, K., Natori, S., and Sekimizu, K. (1993) J. Biochem. 114, 684-690]. In the present work, three GTP-binding proteins, p23A, p23B, and p26, were purified from the same material. The Kd values of p23A, p23B, and p26 for GTP were 19, 6.8, and 4.0 nM, respectively. Binding of [alpha-32P]GTP to these proteins was inhibited by GTP and GDP, but not appreciably by other nucleotides such as ATP, CTP, UTP, and GMP. p23A, p23B, and p26 hydrolyzed GTP to GDP as well as MTG33 did. Peptide mapping analyses revealed that these GTP-binding proteins share common primary structures with MTG33. The defined properties of the three proteins suggest structural and functional relations to MTG33, which is localized in mitochondria.
