The first-cured tobacco contains macromolecular substances with negative impacts on tobacco products quality, and must be aged and fermented to mitigate their effects on the tobacco products quality. However, the natural fermentation takes a longer cycle with large coverage area and low economic efficiency. Microbial fermentation is a method to improve tobacco quality. The change of chemical composition of tobacco during the fermentation is often correlated with shapes of tobacco. This study aimed to investigate the effects of tobacco microorganisms on the quality of different shapes of tobacco. Specifically, Bacillus subtilis B1 and Cytobacillus oceanisediminis C4 with high protease, amylase, and cellulase were isolated from the first-cured tobacco, followed by using them for solid-state fermentation of tobacco powder (TP) and tobacco leaves (TL). Results showed that strains B1 and C4 could significantly improve the sensory quality of TP, enabling it to outperform TL in overall texture and skeleton of tobacco products during cigarette smoking. Compared with the control, microbial fermentation could increase reducing sugar; regulate protein, starch, and cellulose, reduce nicotine, improve total aroma substances, and enable the surface of fermented TP and TL to be more loose, wrinkled, and porous. Microbial community analysis indicated that strains B1 and C4 could change the native structure of microbial community in TP and TL. LEfSe analysis revealed that the potential key biomarkers in TP and TL were Bacilli, Pseudonocardia, Pantoea, and Jeotgalicoccus, which may have cooperative effects with other microbial taxa in improving tobacco quality. This study provides a theoretical basis for improving tobacco fermentation process for better cigarettes quality. Graphical Abstract

Shi et al. (2018) proposed a highly parallel polynomial filtering eigensolver for the computation of planetary normal modes. As a challenge at the Student Cluster Competition in The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC19), we reproduce the computational efficiency of the polynomial filtering eigensolver on our Intel Xeon machine. We present the weak scalability, scaling of runtime with model size (in a fixed interval) and the strong scalability results in this report.

Density accumulation is a widely-used primitive operation in physical design, especially for placement. Iterative invocation in the optimization flow makes it one of the runtime bottlenecks. Accelerating density accumulation is challenging due to data dependency and workload imbalance. In this paper, we propose efficient CPU/GPU kernels for density accumulation by decomposing the problem into two phases: constant-time density collection for each instance and a linear-time prefix sum. We develop CPU and GPU dedicated implementations, and demonstrate promising efficiency benefits on tasks from large-scale placement problems.

BACKGROUND Higher-than-expected heart failure (HF) readmissions affect half of US hospitals every year. The Hospital Reduction Readmission Program has reduced risk-adjusted readmissions, but it has also produced unintended consequences. Shared care models have been advocated for HF care, but the association of shared care networks with HF readmissions has never been investigated. OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the association of shared care networks with 30-day HF excessive readmission rates using a longitudinal observational study. METHODS We curated publicly available data on hospital discharges and HF excessive readmission ratios from hospitals in California between 2012 and 2017. Shared care areas were delineated as data-driven units of care coordination emerging from discharge networks. The localization index, the proportion of patients who reside in the same shared care area in which they are admitted, was calculated by year. Generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the association between the localization index and the excessive readmission ratio of hospitals controlling for race/ethnicity and socioeconomic factors. RESULTS A total of 300 hospitals in California in a 6-year period were included. The HF excessive readmission ratio was negatively associated with the adjusted localization index (β=–.0474, 95% CI –0.082 to –0.013). The percentage of Black residents within the shared care areas was the only statistically significant covariate (β=.4128, 95% CI 0.302 to 0.524). CONCLUSIONS Higher-than-expected HF readmissions were associated with shared care networks. Control mechanisms such as the Hospital Reduction Readmission Program may need to characterize and reward shared care to guide hospitals toward a more organized HF care system.

Eight Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. clones (GT1, YUNYAN77-4, IRCA707, IRCA317, PB217, PB260, PR107 and RRIM600) were compared for their tolerance towards chilling stress. Net photosynthesis (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), optimal and effective photochemical efficiencies (F(v)/F(m) and F'(v) = F'(m)), non-photochemical quenching, cellular lysis and leaf necrosis were measured on trees chilled at 10 degrees C for 96 h, as well as upon recovery at 28 degrees C. In addition, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, dehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase, monodehydroascorbate reductase and superoxide dismutase activities were monitored. Clone RRIM600 appeared to be the most tolerant, because it showed no cellular lysis or leaf necrosis and the best recovery as revealed by Pn, Gs, Fv/Fm and F'(v) = F'(m). Its ability to sustain chilling stress seemed related in part to the fast closure of stomata, suggesting an 'avoidance strategy' for this clone. IRCA707, GT1 and YUNYAN77-4 were also tolerant to the cold treatment as only a few leaf injuries were observed. However, YUNYAN77-4 showed a particular behaviour with a large stomata opening during the first hour of chilling, some photosynthetic activity after 96 h at 10 degrees C, but the slowest recovery in Pn. The greatest cell or leaf damage was observed on PB260, IRCA317, PR107 and PB217 clones, thus classified as sensitive to chilling. These clones showed the strongest decrease in Pn, F(v)/F(m) and F'(v) = F'(m) and the slowest recovery for F(v)/F(m) and F'(v) = F'(m), indicating a high sensitivity of photosystem II to cold temperatures. Punctual increases of various enzymatic activities were observed for all clones during chilling kinetics. During recovery, the strongest increases in enzymatic activity were observed for the most tolerant clones, suggesting that efficient reactive oxygen species elimination is a crucial step for determining chilling tolerance in Hevea although the enzymes implicated varied from one tolerant clone to another. This study points out contrasted strategies of the Hevea clones in copping with chilling stress and recovery.

The aim of the present study was to assess the tolerance of Hevea brasiliensis to chilling temperatures since rubber production has been extended to sub-optimal environments. PB260 clone was used to analyze the responses of leaves chilled at 10A degrees C during 96 h, as well as their recovery at 28A degrees C. Some key parameters were used to evaluate photosynthetic apparatus functioning, membrane damage (electrolyte leakage) and oxidative stress. A short-term response versus a long-term one have been recorded, the time point of 24 h, when stomata closure was effective, being the border between the two responses. P (n) decreased dramatically at 1 h, and Fv/Fm was slightly affected. NPQ reached its maximal level between 4 and 7 h. Lipid peroxidation and membrane lysis were observed between 48 and 96 h. Activities of antioxidant enzymes increased, along with the induction of antioxidant gene expression. Finally, the plants were capable to recover (net photosynthetic rate, photochemical efficiency, antioxidant enzymes activities) when placed back to 28A degrees C showing that PB260 can withstand long-term chilling.

A highly sensitive and precise method for the determination of the polyamines (including putrescine, spermidine and spermine) in cell culture media is described. The samples were concentrated by C18 column and the polyamines were converted to fluorometric derivatives with DNS-Cl. The polyamine derivatives were then completely separated by HPLC and determined by simultaneous fluorometric detection. The CV of intragroup and intergroup were 2.49% – 4.26% and 4.29% – 5.16%, respectively. The rate of recovery was 103% – 99%. There was trace amount of polyamines detected by this method in the media of F12. 8900, RPMI-1640, DMEM and M199 even without incubation with cells. So this method can be used for detecting the changes of polyamines in a medium before and after incubation with cells. It is helpful for the researches on the regulation of cell proliferation by polyamines.

The thyroid stimulating effect of tissue extracts was studied in rats. The serum levels of T4, T3 and cAMP content of thyroid increased significantly at 2–4th hour and then returned to the initial values at 6th hour after injection of spleen extract. After injection of placenta extract, the same levels increased markedly as well. Their stimulating effects on the thyroid system were probably independent of the response of the adrenal system. Administration of morphine prior to injection of tissue extracts blocked their stimulating effects on serum levels of T4, T3 and the cAMP content of thyroid.
