Abdominal computed tomography revealed multiple masses. Abscess blood and pus cultures conducted after percutaneous catheter drainage with pigtail catheters yielded Salmonella choleraesuis. Antibiotic treatment with meropenem was started using multiple catheters in the liver. Drainage catheters in different locations were exchanged several times with larger-bored catheters. After septicemia was detected, abscesses spread to the peritoneal cavity. Pleural complications developed. Antibiotic treatment, with careful drainage guided by ultrasound or computed tomography, controlled the abscesses and complications. In CHS rapid H-mode transition is observed in NBI heated deuterium and hydrogen plasmas without obvious isotope effect, when a net plasma current is ramped up to increase the external rotational transform. The H-mode of CHS has many similarities with those in tokamaks. Recent measurement with fast response Langmuir probes has revealed that the rapid change in floating potential occurs at the transition, but the change follows the formation of edge transport barrier. The presence of E = 1 surface near the edge and sawtooth crash triggered by internal modes may play an important role for determining the H-mode transition in CHS. 7 refs., 4 figs.

Submucosonography to stage tumors of the esophagus and stomach is well reported. Here we report our experience with a modified procedure to evaluate the stage of bladder tumor cystoscopically and compare the results of staging by other methods. The evaluation was carried out on accuracy 10 patients (10 bladder tumors). A water soluble contrast medium (CM: lohexol 33 mg/ml) was injected into the submucosa of the bladder cystoscopically. Usually the injected point was one centimeter to the urethral margin of the tumor and up to three points were selected. Within 30 minutes after the injection, the lateral and frontal X-ray pictures were taken. The accuracies of staging by submucosonography were compared with the results of other methods, i.g., ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). By submucosonography, three categories depending on the diffusion of CM were classified as follows. Type I: (diffuse type) without disturbance of diffusion. Type II: (borderline type) between type I and III. Type III: (defect type) local disturbance of diffusion. Overall accuracies of each were 70.0% (submucosonography), 62.5% (US), 44.4% (CT), 66.7% (MRI) respectively. The accuracies of submucosonography were high in stage Ta, above stage T2 and low in stage T1.

We analyze the data of the TAMA300 detector to search for gravitational waves from inspiraling compact star binaries with masses of the component stars in the range 1M[sun]–3M[sun]. In this analysis, 2705 hours of data, taken during the years 2000–2004, are used for the event search. We combine the results of different observation runs, and obtain a single upper limit on the rate of the coalescence of compact binaries in our Galaxy of 20 per year at a 90% confidence level. In this upper limit, the effects of various systematic errors such as the uncertainty of the background estimation and the calibration of the detector's sensitivity are included.

Spherical dust collapse generally forms a shell focusing naked singularity at the symmetric center. This naked singularity is massless. Further the Newtonian gravitational potential and speed of the dust fluid elements are everywhere much smaller than unity until the central shell focusing naked singularity formation if an appropriate initial condition is set up. Although such a situation is highly relativistic, the analysis by the Newtonian approximation scheme is available even in the vicinity of the space-time singularity. This remarkable feature makes the analysis of such singularity formation very easy. We investigate non-spherical even-parity matter perturbations in this scheme by complementary using numerical and semi-analytical approaches, and estimate linear gravitational waves generated in the neighborhood of the naked singularity by the quadrupole formula. The result shows good agreement with the relativistic perturbation analysis recently performed by Iguchi et al. The energy flux of the gravitational waves is finite but the space-time curvature carried by them diverges., 23 pages, 8 figures

A human myeloma cell line, PCM6, was newly established from peripheral blood of a patient with advanced IgG myeloma by addition of recombinant interleukin-6 (IL-6) in culture. PCM6 cells had a morphology typical of mature plasma cells. Cytogenetic and surface marker studies confirmed that PCM6 cells were identical to fresh myeloma cells. Coculture of PCM6 cells with normal bone marrow mononuclear cells resulted in increased colony size of bone marrow-derived fibroblastoid colony-forming cells (CFU-F). Conditioned medium of PCM6 (PCM6-CM) cells increased the CFU-F colony size in a dose-dependent manner. The activity was labile to trypsin treatment but was heat stable (60 degrees C, 30 minutes). Molecular weight of the activity was approximately 165 kd by Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), and IL-1 beta were not detectable in the conditioned medium. These findings suggest that in some myeloma cases, bone marrow stroma may be affected by CFU-F growth-promoting activity.

We give a classification of spherically symmetric kinematic self-similar solutions. This classification is complementary to that given in a previous work by the present authors [Prog. Theor. Phys. 108, 819 (2002)]. Dust solutions of the second, zeroth and infinite kinds, perfect-fluid solutions and vacuum solutions of the first kind are treated. The kinematic self-similarity vector is either parallel or orthogonal to the fluid flow in the perfect-fluid and vacuum cases, while the `tilted' case, i.e., neither parallel nor orthogonal case, is also treated in the dust case. In the parallel case, there are no dust solutions of the second (except when the self-similarity index $\alpha$ is 3/2), zeroth and infinite kinds, and in the orthogonal case, there are no dust solutions of the second and infinite kinds. Except in these cases, the governing equations can be integrated to give exact solutions. It is found that the dust solutions in the tilted case belong to a subclass of the Lema{\^ i}tre-Tolman-Bondi family of solutions for the marginally bound case. The flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) solution is the only dust solution of the second kind with $\alpha=3/2$ in the tilted and parallel cases and of the zeroth kind in the orthogonal case. The flat, open and closed FRW solutions with $p=-\mu/3$, where $p$ and $\mu$ are the pressure and energy density, respectively, are the only perfect-fluid first-kind self-similar solutions in the parallel case, while a new exact solution with $p=\mu$, which we call the ``singular stiff-fluid solution'', is the only such solution in the orthogonal case. The Minkowski solution is the only vacuum first-kind self-similar solution both in the parallel and orthogonal cases.
