1. A crítica indígena e a hipótese do cérebro dividido: Ideias para adiar o fim do mundo

Abstract: The voice of Indigenous intellectuals on the conduct of the European conquerors, whenever and wherever in the Americas it has been recorded, consists of a thoroughgoing critique of the Europeans’ genocidal and ecocide al proclivities. In recent times, the voice has taken on apocalyptic tones, emphasizing that the West’s chronic disregard for nature imperils all of us, with Ayton Krenak’s eloquent appeal for ‘ideas to postpone the end of the world’. An astoundingly similar critique of the Western World based on neuroscience comes from the Scottish psychiatrist and philosopher Iain McGilchrist whose Divided Brain Hypothesis proposes an explanation for what the West has become: an existential threat to human survival. Others such as Mignolo, de Sousa Santos, Bateson, Harries-Jones, have put forward ideas which align with this hypothesis, but this essay brings these two currents together for the first time and proposes that it was the West’s conquest of the Americas - its people, its natural resources - that was a key factor in normalizing this mindset. To extend the metaphor, the conquest of the American hemisphere normalized the conquest of the right hemisphere by the left. RESUMO A voz dos intelectuais indígenas sobre a conduta dos conquistadores europeus, sempre e onde quer que nas Américas tenha sido registrada, consiste em uma crítica completa das inclinações genocidas e ecocidas dos europeus. Nos últimos tempos, a voz assumiu tons apocalípticos, enfatizando que o desrespeito crônico do Ocidente pela natureza põe em perigo todos nós, com o apelo eloquente de Ayton Krenak por "ideias para adiar o fim do mundo". Uma crítica surpreendentemente semelhante ao mundo ocidental, baseada na neurociência, vem do psiquiatra e filósofo escocês Iain McGilchrist, cuja Hipótese do Cérebro Dividido propõe uma explicação para aquilo que o Ocidente se tornou: uma ameaça existencial à sobrevivência humana. 2. Rapid cell type-specific nascent proteome labeling in Drosophila

Abstract: Controlled protein synthesis is required to regulate gene expression and is often carried out in a cell type-specific manner. Protein synthesis is commonly measured by labeling the nascent proteome with amino acid analogs or isotope-containing amino acids. These methods have been difficult to implement in vivo as they require lengthy amino acid replacement procedures. O-propargyl-puromycin (OPP) is a puromycin analog that incorporates into nascent polypeptide chains. Through its terminal alkyne, OPP can be conjugated to a fluorophore-azide for directly visualizing nascent protein synthesis, or to a biotin-azide for capture and identification of newly-synthesized proteins. To achieve cell type-specific OPP incorporation, we developed phenylacetyl-OPP (PhAc-OPP), a puromycin analog harboring an enzyme-labile blocking group that can be removed by Penicillin G acylase (PGA). Here, we show that cell type-specific PGA expression in Drosophila can be used to achieve OPP labeling of newly-synthesized proteins in targeted cell populations within the brain. Following a brief 2-hour incubation of intact brains with PhAc-OPP, we observe robust imaging and affinity purification of OPP-labeled nascent proteins in PGA-targeted cell populations. We apply this method to show a pronounced age-related decline in neuronal protein synthesis in the fly brain, demonstrating the capability to quantitatively capture in vivo protein synthesis states using PhAc-OPP. This method, which we call POPPi (PGA-dependent OPP incorporation), should be applicable for rapidly visualizing protein synthesis and identifying nascent proteins synthesized under diverse physiological and pathological conditions with cellular specificity in vivo.

Abstract: STEAM is the term given to a growing field of research and practice that integrates arts into traditional science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subjects. It is also the name of a science communication summer school that has evolved from a conventional in-person professional development opportunity to a blended informal science learning space with a flipped classroom approach. This article charts that development and includes perspectives from several science communicators who participated in in-person and online versions of the STEAM schools. The future of professional development in science communication is considered in light of the changes caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

9. Unraveling Parkinson's Disease Neurodegeneration: Does Aging Hold the Clues?

Abstract: Aging is the greatest risk factor for Parkinson’s disease (PD), suggesting that mechanisms driving the aging process promote PD neurodegeneration. Several lines of evidence support a role for aging in PD. First, hallmarks of brain aging such as mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, loss of protein homeostasis, and neuroinflammation are centrally implicated in PD development. Second, mutations that cause monogenic PD are present from conception, yet typically only cause disease following a period of aging. Third, lifespan-extending genetic, dietary, or pharmacological interventions frequently attenuate PD-related neurodegeneration. These observations support a central role for aging in disease development and suggest that new discoveries in the biology of aging could be leveraged to elucidate novel mechanisms of PD pathophysiology. A recent rapid growth in our understanding of conserved molecular pathways that govern model organism lifespan and healthspan has highlighted a key role for metabolism and nutrient sensing pathways. Uncovering how metabolic pathways involving NAD+ consumption, insulin, and mTOR signaling link to the development of PD is underway and implicates metabolism in disease etiology. Here, we assess areas of convergence between nervous system aging and PD, evaluate the link between metabolism, aging, and PD and address the potential of metabolic interventions to slow or halt the onset of PD-related neurodegeneration drawing on evidence from cellular and animal models.

10. In pursuit of inter-specialty consensus on excited delirium syndrome: a scoping literature review

Abstract: Excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) is a controversial and disputed diagnosis involving altered mentation, agitation, and, frequently, substance abuse. Recently, it has become a common pre-hospital diagnosis, serving as justification for use of force, restraint, and/or medication administration. To conduct a scoping review across three databases to describe the most frequently reported diagnostic criteria for ExDS, as well as to explore its use as a diagnosis for deaths of individuals in the custody of law enforcement. In 2021, three literature databases were searched: Ovid Medline, PsycInfo, and Scopus. Studies were included if they were peer-reviewed, English articles describing (1) ExDS symptoms, (2) substance intoxication with at least 2 ExDS symptoms present, or (3) centering on deaths occurring in the custody of law enforcement and attributed to ExDS. Key study data were extracted and the current literature was described qualitatively. Analysis took place between March and December 2021. A total of 97 studies were identified through initial abstract and secondary full-text review, with noted discrepancies in the definition of ExDS itself. After review, differences in ExDS diagnosis among organizations were explored, along with subsequent clinical impact, particularly in the pre-hospital setting. Resulting impact on patients, particularly those of minoritized ethnic and racial groups, was also noted. Prone aggressive restraint, in particular, is noted as an established risk factor for fatalities in ExDS cases. At this time, ExDS should not be utilized as a diagnosis; major medical organizations have an urgent responsibility to convene to formalize consensus-based diagnostic criteria or to propose alternate management guidelines for agitated and altered persons.

11. 320. EFFICACY OF LAPAROSCOPIC FUNDOPLICATION IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC COUGH AND GASTRO-OESOPHAGEAL REFLUX

Abstract: The outcome of anti-reflux surgery in patients with cough suspected to be induced by gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is frequently uncertain. The aims of this study were to assess the efficacy of laparoscopic fundoplication (LF) for controlling cough in a patient population suffering chronic cough when alternative aetiologies (e.g. asthma) had been excluded and pathologic gastro-oesophageal reflux had been confirmed on ambulatory pH monitoring, and to identify predictors of response. From a prospective database of 1,598 patients who had undergone laparoscopic fundoplication, 66 (4%) had a principal presenting symptom of chronic cough as well as objective evidence of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Patients completed questionnaires for GORD symptoms (modified DeMeester score) and severity of cough (visual analog scale) both before and after LF, and had pre-operative gastroscopy and 24-hour pH monitoring before operation. Patients were considered to have responded to LF if they had no cough or the cough had improved by 50% or more after operation. Follow-up data was available for 66/66 patients (100%), with a median follow-up time of 43 months (range 14–104 months) after operation. Cough was relieved in 40/66 (61%), while typical GORD symptoms (heartburn, regurgitation) was relieved in 44/49 (90%). The presence of typical GORD symptoms, oesophagitis, or pH study variables did not predict the response of the cough to LF. At 1 year, 67% of patients were satisfied with the results of their surgery, 20% were not and 13% were unsure. For comparison, the 1430/1598 patients in the database with no laryngopharyngeal symptoms had a satisfaction rate of 94%. Based on our study and available literature, it appears there are no reliable pre-operative clinical predictors of a satisfactory response of cough to LF. This probably reflects a current inability to obtain an accurate aetiological diagnosis of chronic cough, even in the presence of known abnormal gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Regardless, in a well-chosen cohort of patients with chronic cough, LF can yield good patient satisfaction rates, albeit less than for patients with typical GORD symptoms.

Abstract: A large literature is concerned with measuring economic uncertainty and quantifying its impact on real decisions, such as investment, hiring, and R&D, and ultimately economic growth. The COVID-19 pandemic underscores the importance of timely measures of uncertainty and expected growth across horizons. Asset prices, such as dividend futures and index options, provide particularly useful measures as they are forward looking and available at high frequencies. We extend this literature by using new data on the prices of options on index-level dividends, from which we can compute implied dividend volatility. These implied volatilities differ from the VIX which measures uncertainty about stock prices, not only uncertainty about dividends. We construct a term structure of implied dividend volatilities that characterizes how uncertainty varies across horizons. We study how this term structure developed over the COVID-19 crisis, documenting a substantial increase in the volatility of near-future dividends that lingers even as the volatility of the overall market portfolio has started to fall. In addition to introducing this market, we also provide new theoretical results that show how these data can be used to derive lower bounds on expected dividend returns and on expected growth rates, by maturity. This provides an alternative to methods used in the literature using vector autoregressions or survey expectations, and sharpens alternative bounds in the literature.

Abstract: Modern investors face a high-dimensional prediction problem: thousands of observable variables are potentially relevant for forecasting. We reassess the conventional wisdom on market efficiency in light of this fact. In our equilibrium model, N assets have cash flows that are linear in J characteristics, with unknown coefficients. Risk-neutral Bayesian investors learn these coefficients and determine market prices. If J and N are comparable in size, returns are cross-sectionally predictable ex post. In-sample tests of market efficiency reject the no-predictability null with high probability, even though investors use information optimally in real time. In contrast, out-of-sample tests retain their economic meaning.

Abstract: I introduce an index of market return autocorrelation based on the prices of index options and of forward-start index options and implement it at a six-month horizon. The results suggest that the autocorrelation of the S&P 500 index was close to zero before the subprime crisis but was negative in its aftermath, attaining values around –20% to –30%. I speculate that this may reflect market perceptions about the likely reaction, via quantitative easing, of policymakers to future market moves.

Abstract: The common calcaneal tendon is one of the most injured tendons in dogs. Regardless the cause, if untreated, the injury may increase permanently compromising the injured limb function. This is a case reported in a seven years old, male, 31.5 Kg, very hecticbehavior, Labrador dog. The dog had been suffered a cut by walking on a wasteland. At the clinical examination, he presented claudication, knee hyperextension and tarsal hyperflexion. At the common calcaneal tendon palpation, a loss of continuity was realized characterizing a rupture. The injury was surgically treated by approximating the tendon ́s stumps. Aiming to reduce the tension over the tendon, a plaque was sutured in the tendon caudal surface and the tarsocrural joint was temporarily immobilized. The calcaneal tenorrhaphy with modified Kessler suture associated to an orthopedical plaque and external skeletal fixative showed to be efficient to promote a dog ́s common calcaneal tendon early repairing. The healing occurred by first intention and the injured limb had a deambulatory restoration even in the first postoperative week. Such conducts have also to be considered in calcaneal tenorrhaphies in active, heavy and/or uncooperative patients.

18. High-grade Transformation in Adult Granulosa Cell Tumor: Potential Diagnostic Challenges and the Utility of Molecular Testing

Abstract: Adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT) is the most common sex cord-stromal tumor, accounting for about 1% of all ovarian tumors. It has a propensity for recurrences, especially late in the disease course. High-grade or sarcomatoid transformation has been rarely described in AGCT. We present a case of a 65 year old woman who presented with hemodynamic shock and bowel obstruction from a large pelvic mass. Histologic examination revealed predominantly high-grade epithelioid and spindled cells with high mitotic activity and necrosis. A minor component suggestive of AGCT was also identified. Molecular analysis confirmed the diagnosis of AGCT by revealing FOXL2 C134W mutations. Additionally, TP53 mutations were also detected which may contribute to the high-grade transformation. Our case is unique because the high-grade sarcomatous component constituted most of the tumor and the areas of “typical” AGCT were minor. Also, the clinical and operative findings did not suggest a specific site of origin leading to a broad differential diagnosis. High-grade transformation in AGCT is a rarely described phenomenon. The awareness of this presentation is helpful in reaching the correct diagnosis. Molecular analysis may be an extremely helpful adjunct in challenging cases.

Abstract: We define a sentiment indicator based on option prices, valuation ratios and interest rates. The indicator can be interpreted as a lower bound on the expected growth in fundamentals that a rational investor would have to perceive in order to be happy to hold the market. The lower bound was unusually high in the late 1990s, reflecting dividend growth expectations that in our view were unreasonably optimistic. We show that our measure is a leading indicator of detrended volume and of analysts’ long-term earnings growth expectations. Our approach depends on two key ingredients. First, we derive a new valuation-ratio decomposition that is related to the Campbell and Shiller (1988) loglinearization, but which resembles the Gordon growth model more closely and has certain other advantages. Abstract: Visual Abstract, The G2019S mutation in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) causes familial Parkinson’s disease (PD) and is also found in a subset of idiopathic cases. Prior studies in Drosophila and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived dopamine neurons uncovered a pronounced effect of G2019S LRRK2 on mRNA translation. It was previously reported that G2019S LRRK2 promotes translation of mRNAs with complex 5′ untranslated region (UTR) secondary structure, resulting in increased expression of calcium channels and dysregulated calcium homeostasis in human dopamine neurons. Here, we show that dysregulated translation occurs in the brains of mammalian LRRK2 models in vivo. Through ribosome profiling studies of global translation, we observe that mRNAs with complex 5′UTR structure are also preferentially translated in the G2019S LRRK2-expressing mouse brain. Reporter assays suggest that this 5′UTR preference is independent of translation initiation factors. Conversely, translation of mRNAs with complex 5′UTR secondary structure is downregulated in LRRK2 knock-out (KO) mouse brain, indicating a robust link between LRRK2 kinase activity and translation of mRNA with complex 5′UTR structure. Further, substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) dopamine neurons in the G2019S LRRK2-expressing brain exhibit increased calcium influx, which is consistent with the previous report from human dopamine neurons. These results collectively suggest that LRRK2 plays a mechanistic role in translational regulation, and the G2019S mutation in LRRK2 causes translational defects leading to calcium dysregulation in the mammalian brain.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-01-01 Studies involving different methods and techniques of cryopreservation and its interactions with the conception rates in artificial insemination (AI) programs are reported in the literature. This study evaluated the sperm kinetics, plasma membrane integrity, and fertility rates of mares inseminated with cryopreserved stallion semen subjected to different freezing methods. For this, four ejaculates from five stallions were collected and frozen in conventional (Styrofoam box) or automated system in Mini-Digitcool ZH 400. Seminal samples were evaluated after thawing for sperm motion parameters by CASA and plasma membrane integrity by epifluorescence microscopy. For the fertility trial, a cross-over model was performed using 100 cycles of 50 mares, which were inseminated by one the two freezing methods. No differences were observed for sperm motion parameters and plasma membrane integrity between groups (P >.05). The pregnancy rate using the conventional method was 56% (28/50) and did not differ (P =.5406) from the pregnancy rate (64%, 32/50) obtained using the automatized method. The use of semen from fertile stallions may not illustrate small differences in the two freezing methods evaluated. Conventional and automated freezing systems did not differ in the quality and viability of fertile stallion semen and conception rates, indicating that the two methodologies can be safely used in AI programs. 26. Mouse model of late-onset neutrophilic asthma reveals an epithelium-lymphocyte-neutrophil communication circuit underlying destructive airway neutrophilia

Abstract: While childhood-onset asthma is extensively modeled in labs and includes TH2 cell driven-, steroid-responsive, eosinophilic etiology, little is understood about late-onset asthma which presents as severe, steroid-resistant, and destructive neutrophilic disease with poor outcomes. Lack of appropriate disease models widens this knowledge gap leading to fewer therapies and poorer quality of life for neutrophilic asthma patients. Here, we discover that while conventional models of allergic asthma (relying on naïve sensitized mice acutely challenged with aerosolized ovalbumin) induces eosinophilic asthma, transient and recurrent aeroallergenic exposure over extended durations (as would occur in humans progressing into adulthood) reprograms the lung myeloid and lymphoid landscape to instigate neutrophilic asthma. Mice with such lung history harbor diverse clusters of lung-resident CD4+ TRM cells including a novel RORγt-negative-IL17A+ TH17 subset; the latter detectable in asthmatic adult human lungs. On allergen reencounter, these RORγt-negative TH17 cells, rapidly secrete IL-17A which signals into lung epithelial and stromal cells to express CXCL5 and induce neutrophilic asthma including peribronchial neutrophilia, vascular leakage and lung damage. We find that lung epithelial antigen presentation is crucial to regulate disease severity by skewing CD4+ TRM phenotypes in asthmatic lungs. Specifically, epithelial MHC-II supports TH1 TRM cells and IFNγ secretion; the latter being a potent suppressor of IL-17A-induced CXCL5 and airway neutrophilia. Thus, using a relevant model of the disease, we identify an ‘epithelium-lymphocyte-neutrophil’ circuitry as a critical regulator of late-onset neutrophilic asthma. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Emergency physicians lack high-quality evidence for many diagnostic and treatment decisions made for patients with suspected or confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our objective is to describe the methods used to collect and ensure the data quality of a multicentre registry of patients presenting to the emergency department with suspected or confirmed COVID-19. METHODS: This methodology study describes a population-based registry that has been enrolling consecutive patients presenting to the emergency department with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 since Mar. 1, 2020. Most data are collected from retrospective chart review. Phone follow-up with patients at 30 days captures the World Health Organization clinical improvement scale and contextual, social and cultural variables. Phone follow-up also captures patient-reported quality of life using the Veterans Rand 12-Item Health Survey at 30 days, 60 days, 6 months and 12 months. Fifty participating emergency departments from 8 provinces in Canada currently enrol patients into the registry. INTERPRETATION: Data from the registry of the Canadian COVID-19 Emergency Department Rapid Response Network will be used to derive and validate clinical decision rules to inform clinical decision-making, describe the natural history of the disease, evaluate COVID-19 diagnostic tests and establish the real-world effectiveness of treatments and vaccines, including in populations that are excluded or underrepresented in clinical trials. This registry has the potential to generate scientific evidence to inform our pandemic response, and to serve as a model for the rapid implementation of population-based data collection protocols for future public health emergencies. Abstract: The chief purpose of this thesis is to establish that the ALP has, in recent decades, attracted a sizeable middle-class membership. Of course others have suggested that it has, but their claims have usually been based upon observed changes in the composition of the parliamentary ALP, or in the style of its parliamentary leaders. Until now the rank and file who make up the vast majority of ALP members have been paid little or no sociological attention. Using membership records pertaining to the Victorian Branch of the ALP, I am able to show that Labor no longer has a largely blue-collar membership, and that between 1961 and 1981, it attracted a sizeable number of middle-class recruits.[…]

Abstract: Background : The bird’s beak is a structure in constant growth, covered by keratinized epidermal sheaths called rhamphotheca. When subjected to certain degrees of injury, birds can suffer from lesions and fractures in different parts of the body, including the beak. One can treat simple ranch lesions by antisepsis and covering it with resin while the keratin is replaced; yet in complete fractures, with segment avulsion, they need complex prostheses to restore the functions of the nozzle. The main goal of this study was to report a case of a synthetic rhinotheca prosthesis placement in a wild carcara ( Caracara plancus ). Case : The carcara was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the UNIUBE, at the end of May 2018, by Uberaba’s Environmental Police, with a history of having been run over. On the physical examination, the animal showed aggressive behavior, low body weight, increased heart and respiratory rates, mild dehydration and complete fracture of the rhinotheca, with avulsion of the mid-distal portion and presence of necrosis in the remaining proximal remnant, the last one seen after debridement and complete cleansing of the lesion. In the following days, complementary exams were performed aiming a complete evaluation of the animal, these revealed the following: oral cavity swab, positive for Candida sp.; radiography of thoracic and pelvic limbs, without any changes; research of hemoparasites, with a negative result; and complete blood count showing marked leukocytosis. The animal was kept in the hospital’s wild animal ward, with a daily handling of 400 g of chicken neck and heart, processed on a blender and was also supplemented with a variety of minerals. After the wild animal was managed for eleven months, evolving to the ideal weight set for the species, the process for making the prosthesis started. At first, the prosthesis was made manually with epoxy resin and polyamide, being molded on the animal's rhinotheca, before that, the carcara was sedated with intranasal midazolam, and then modeled in the ideal shape for the beak. Then, the definitive prosthesis was made with acrylic resin, using the previous mold as a base. The surgical procedure was performed in April 2019, with an anesthetic protocol composed of midazolam, dexmedetomidine, ketamine and morphine for sedation, and maintenance in sevoflurane. Prosthesis and rhinotheca were both fixated by bilateral perforation with a 1.0 mm drill, and later on 2 titanium screws were inserted for dental use, these measuring 1.5 mm. After being correctly threated, the screws received a thin layer of acrylic resin on top, for better fixation. Immediately after the operation, the animal was able to use the prosthesis to feed itself. After the surgical procedure, the bird was destined for a sanctuary, and months later the prosthesis eventually fell. Since then, the bird has remained without it. Discussion : Because the beak did not grow due to trauma and consequent necrosis, and the animal did not adapt well with the remnant still present, the manufacture of the prosthesis was the solution so that it could return to its natural habits and behaviors. For greater adherence and fixation, we opted for the use of 2 titanium screws for dental use with the deposition of a thin layer of acrylic resin on top of both. Prostheses can be successful in fixing, but there are no studies indicating how long they will remain viable. Therefore, even with the success of the procedure, allowing the bird to return to its natural habits and behaviors, until after the fall of the prosthesis, it is an animal that needs to be kept in captivity suitable for daily observation. 30. Eventration in Green Iguana (Iguana iguana)

Abstract: Background : The reptile class could be considered one of the biggest vertebrate groups and are divided in orders and suborders according to their characteristics. These animals’ maintenance in captivity, either at home, captive bred or at zoos, can generate risk to their health, if the required cares are not given for each respective species. The lack of individual cares could lead to bone and muscular diseases and to traumatic lesions in soft tissues, mainly in the coelomic cavity. The report that is being presented aims to describe the case of a green iguana ( Iguana iguana ) that presented an increase of volume in the coelomic cavity. The animal belongs to the squad of the Zoo “Dr. Fabio de Sa Barreto”. Case : A green iguana arrived at the Zoo in February 2019 coming from another Zoo, with already an increase of volume in the coelomic cavity. The animal was put in quarantine and later on, it was put in display at a terrarium in the Zoo considered adequate to reptiles, with another seven green iguanas along with an argentine tegu ( Salvator rufescens ). Their feed was offered in the morning and was composed of fruits, vegetables and flowers like hibiscus. In the end of July 2019, it was reported by the attendant that the animal was presented with anorexia and prostration, and these symptoms progressed to neurologic signs, as it walked in circles. So, the animal was evaluated by the Zoo veterinarians and on exam they noticed lethargy, dehydration, absence of reflexes (pupillary, eyelid and painful), locomotion difficulty and when the iguana moves, it walks in circles. The increase in volume had the same size as reported in February and a soft consistency. After that, the animal was interned and treated according to the symptoms and the clinical evolution. Ten days after the hospitalization, the animal was still not eating, and locomotion stopped completely. It was performed in an ultrasonographic exam evaluating all the coelomic cavity, in which a great anechoic area was visualized, and a true hernia was diagnosed. However, the content of the hernia was not identified. In the next day, the animal died, and, in the necropsy, it was possible to verify that the increase in volume was actually a bladder eventration. The eventration occurred due to a laceration in the coelomic cavity musculature that allows the passage of the bladder to the subcutaneous space and its incarceration. So, the elimination of the urine and of nitrogen compounds was difficult and a large accumulation of uric acid from the bladder to the urodeo. Discussion : Iguana iguana is a uricotelic animal, which means that the main nitrogenous waste product is uric acid. Nevertheless, ammonia is also eliminated in less quantity, because of the excess of protein in the diet. These animals eliminate around 98 to 99% of the nitrogen compounds as uric acid and less than 1% as ammonia, which prove that it is possible for the accumulation of ammonia in reptiles, if any obstacle in its elimination exists. The excess of ammonia is extremely toxic to the organism, leading to emesis, irritability, lethargy, anorexia, ataxia, motor difficulties, behavioral and neurological changes, and could progress to coma or even death. The bladder incarceration reported in this case, made it impossible for the excretion of urine, uric acid and ammonia, and these compounds remained accumulated. So, the clinical signs, along with the necropsy findings, were suggestive of intoxication by ammonia accumulation which could be responsible for the signs presented by the animal and the evolution to neurologic symptoms, coma and death.

Abstract: We define a sentiment indicator that exploits two contrasting views of return predictability, and study its properties. The indicator, which is based on option prices, valuation ratios and interest rates, was unusually high during the late 1990s, reflecting dividend growth expectations that in our view were unreasonably optimistic. We interpret it as helping to reveal irrational beliefs about fundamentals. We show that our measure is a leading indicator of detrended volume, and of various other measures associated with financial fragility. We also make two methodological contributions. First, we derive a new valuation-ratio decomposition that is related to the Campbell and Shiller (1988) loglinearization, but which resembles the traditional Gordon growth model more closely and has certain other advantages for our purposes. Second, we introduce a volatility index that provides a lower bound on the market's expected log return.

(Virgo and MAGIC Collaboration), Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo are monitoring the sky and collecting gravitational-wave strain data with sufficient sensitivity to detect signals routinely. In this paper we describe the data recorded by these instruments during their first and second observing runs. The main data products are gravitational-wave strain time series sampled at 16384 Hz. 33. True Infection by Capillaria hepatica in a Dog

Abstract: Background: Capillaria hepatica is a nematode, zoonotic, with worldwide distribution. The main hosts are rodents, nevertheless other mammals can be affected. Although the parasite has high affinity for the liver, it rarely causes a hepatic disease in domestic animals and humans. The diagnosis is difficult and usually a biopsy is required. The treatment is difficult and is based in anti-helminthic and corticoid, but prevention is the best strategy against the disease. The aim of the present report is to describe a case of hepatic capillariosis in a dog approaching the clinical signs, diagnosis and therapeutic. Case: A 12-year-old Brazilian Terrier bitch, with a history of visit to the farm and regular hunting of rats, frogs, birds and other wild animals, was attended with hyporexia and apathy. At the physical exam the dog presented elevation of rectal temperature, intense jaundice and abdominal pain. In the biochemical exams was noticed a slight increase in globulins and a sharp increase in alkaline phosphatase (AP), total, direct and indirect bilirubin, suggesting a liver injury. In the ultrasonographic exam, hepatomegaly with dispersed hyperechoic areas were observed, suggesting hepatic steatosis. The patient was treated with ursodesoxicolic acid and S-adenosil metionin for 30 consecutive days, showing a clinic improvement. Two months after the end of the treatment the animal worsened, showing jaundice, ascites, motor incoordination, weakness, difficulty in food and water ingestion and changes in the mental state. In the complete blood count was observed a macrocytic hypochromic regenerative anemia, leukocytosis with neutrophilia and monocytosis and thrombocytopenia. In biochemical exams was detected decrease in creatinine and albumin and increase in alanine aminotransferase and AP, suggesting hepatopathy by biliary obstruction. There were performed exams for leishmania and ehrlichiosis that tested negative. In the ultrasonographic exam it was noticed that the liver had the same alterations and the presence of free fluid in the abdominal cavity. Due to the deterioration of the clinical picture a blood transfusion was necessary, however the patient worsened and presented respiratory difficulty for a bilateral pleural effusion. Then, the fluid was drained and a treatment with S-adenosil metionin, silymarin, ursodesoxicolic acid, doxycycline and prednisolone was started. After 17 days, a hepatic biopsy was performed, but the patient died at the surgery desk. Samples from the liver were collected for histopathologic exam. The diagnosis was confirmed in hepatic capillariosis and periportal chronic hepatitis, with the visualization of numerous parasites structures with bioperculated barrel shape. Discussion : Due to the nonspecific clinical alterations observed in the patient and the low prevalence of C. hepatica in domestic animals, there was a difficulty in the diagnosis which lead to a symptomatic, nonspecific and inefficient treatment that culminate with the death of the patient. The histopathologic exam of the liver is the best manner to find the correct diagnosis of C. hepatica infection, once the parasites eggs remains in the liver parenchyma wrapped by fibrosis and aren´t eliminate in the feces. The eggs elimination in the environment just occur after the death of the animal. Although there didn't exist a consensus about hepatic capillariosis treatment yet, if the diagnosis were done earlier, a specific treatment with better chances of a good result could be performed. We concluded that hepatic capillariosis should be included in differential diagnosis for patients with hepatic syndrome, mainly if the animal had a hunting habit and if it had access to surroundings with high rats’ infestation.

34. Perineal Hernia in Dogs

Abstract: Background : Perineal hernia is a serious disease characterized by weakening or atrophy and separation of the muscles and fasciae of the perineal musculature, followed by the caudal displacement of pelvic and abdominal organs to the perineum region. Treatment is invariably surgical and several approaches have been proposed, but complication and recurrence rates remain high. This study aimed to evaluate 120 cases of perineal hernia treated at the Veterinary Hospital of Uberaba (HVU) from 2005 to 2020, addressing the clinical and surgical aspects and the postoperative period, seeking to identify the most relevant factors to improve care and treatment of future patients affected by this disease. Materials, Methods & Results : The medical records of dogs with a definitive diagnosis of perineal hernia were collected. The prevalence of perineal hernia was calculated. Data were obtained regarding sex, being castrated or not, age, body mass, race, clinical signs, affected side, possibility of hernia reduction, treatments used, associated pathologies. Of the 120 cases, only 69 underwent surgery at the HVU and from these cases data were obtained regarding hernia content, surgical techniques, surgical wires used, recurrences and postoperative complications. Fisher's exact test was applied to assess the influence of the type of surgical treatment and surgical thread on the occurrence of complications and recurrences. Perineal hernia was the second most frequently observed hernia. Mixed breed, male, non-neutered and geriatric dogs were the most affected. The most frequently observed clinical signs were related to the digestive and urinary tract, consistent with the most commonly found hernia contents (bladder, prostate and rectum). The simple herniorrhaphy technique was the most used and showed a high number of complications. The second most used technique was the elevation of the internal shutter, which proved to be more efficient than the simple technique. Regardless of the technique used, the association of two or more techniques proved to be more efficient to reduce major complications. The use of the vaginal tunic stood out because it proved to be efficient in the treatment of perineal hernias regardless of whether it is associated with simple herniorrhaphy or obturator elevation. The surgical fixations of abdominal organs (Bladder, Ducto deferente and Colon) proved to be effective, since there were no recurrences or major complications associated with their use and the most used threads for herniorrhaphy were polyamide and catgut. Low recurrence rates were found in patients who received synthetic yarns. The most frequent complications were suture dehiscence and serous secretion. Discussion : Perineal hernia is a very important alteration due to difficulties in treatment, high rates of complications and recurrence, in addition to the large number of affected dogs. Several surgical techniques have already been proposed for the treatment of perineal hernia in dogs and are based on the reconstruction of the perineal musculature through sutures, muscle flaps, biological membranes, synthetic mesh and the reduction of pressure on the perineum through the surgical fixation of organs abdominals such as colon, vas deferens and bladder (in the musculature of the abdominal wall). It is concluded that the perineal hernia affects mainly male, non-neutered and geriatric dogs, being rare in females. Regardless of the techniques used, the association of two or more techniques is more efficient to reduce the rate of recurrences and complications. The autogenous vaginal tunic is a good option for muscle strengthening in perineal herniorraphies. The use of synthetic surgical wires leads to better results in the treatment of perineal hernia when compared to biological wires.

Abstract: Background: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare illnesses caused by deficient activity of enzymes required for degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Each type of MPS is caused by mutations in one of the genes that encode the 11 acid hydrolases involved in this degradation process, which are present in the lysosomes. Progressive accumulation of GAGs in the lysosomes result in cellular dysfunction and multisystemic clinical signs, with consequent decrease in quality of life and lifespan of the affected patients. The objective of the present work is to report a case of MPS type I in a dog.Case: A mixed-breed male dog of approximately 2-month-old weighing 2.5 kg was referred to Hospital Veterinário de Uberaba with a distended abdomen. At the clinical examination, the patient exhibited a regular nutritional status, pale mucous membranes, 7% dehydration, an arterial pulse rate of 120 beats per minute, a respiratory rate of 40 breaths per minute, and a heart rate of 120 beats per minute. There were increased abdominal volume and tension, and hepatosplenomegaly. The abdominal percussion exam produced a dull tone. Additional findings included muscular atrophy, increased volume in the metaphyseal areas of the thoracic and pelvic limbs, valgus limb deformity in the thoracic limbs, and instability of the hip joint. Radiographic examination revealed a series of bone alterations such as reduced vertebral bodies, a generalized decrease in radiopacity, thin cortical areas in long bones, narrowing of the pelvic canal, and marked deformation and irregularities in acetabular and epiphyseal (both proximal and distal) areas of the femurs and tibias. Ankylosis of the tibiotarsal and tarsometatarsal joints was also observed. There was also loss of trabecular structure and irregularities on the surfaces of all epiphyses of the bones, epiphyseal lines markedly open, and bones that were shorter and thicker than normal. The suspected diagnoses were pseudoachondroplasia and mucopolysaccharidosis. In view of the clinical and radiographic findings, tests were performed to investigate the clinical suspicion of MPS. Consequently, qualitative and quantitative tests of GAGs in the urine, as well as a blood enzymatic essay, were requested; results confirmed the diagnosis of MPS type I. Intensive treatment allowed the patient to reach adulthood. Whenever new clinical signs emerged, they were treated palliatively. As the disease became more severe, the patient died at the age of 3 years.Discussion: Mucopolysaccharidosis type I is a rare disease that exhibits variable clinical signs and for which there is no specific treatment in dogs; these characteristics hinder diagnosis and treatment of patients as the one described in this report. The major clinical signs observed in this case are in agreement with those reported in the literature, according to which the disease can cause severe alterations such as bone defects, increased volume and deformities in the joints of the limbs, corneal opacity, and enlargement of abdominal organs such as the liver and spleen. In considering diagnostic methods for MPS, the main screening test is quantification of GAGs in the urine. The confirmatory test for MPS consists of analysis of the activity of specific lysosomal enzymes in a blood sample; this test allowed the establishment of a diagnosis in this case. Enzyme replacement therapy, in which a recombinant enzyme is used, have yielded good results in humans and dogs. However, this treatment does not cure the disease – it only attenuates the clinical signs and enables the patient to reach adulthood. Access to enzyme replacement therapy was not possible in the present case. As a conclusion, MPS should be included in the differential diagnosis of developmental diseases in puppies. This highlights the importance of further studies and reports on this disease.

Abstract: High time resolution (1‐5 s) magnetometer, geomagnetically induced current (GIC), and mains harmonic distortion data from the Halfway Bush substation in Dunedin, New Zealand are analyzed. A recently developed technique using VLF radio wave data provides high resolution measurements of mains harmonic distortion levels. Three case studies are investigated, each involving high rates of change of local geomagnetic field, but with different timescales of magnetospheric driver mechanisms, and different substation transformer configurations. Two cases of enhanced GIC during substorm events are analyzed, and one case of a storm sudden commencement. Time delays between magnetic field fluctuations and induced transformer currents are found to be ~100 s for substorm events, but only ~20 s for the storm sudden commencement containing higher frequency variations. Boxcar averaging of the magnetic field fluctuations using running windows of ± 2 minutes leads to spectral power profiles similar to those of GIC profiles, with reduced power at frequencies >0.003 Hz (periods < 5 minutes). Substantially lower mains harmonic distortion levels were observed after the removal of the single phase bank transformer, HWB T4, from the high voltage configuration at Halfway Bush. No systematic time delay was found between GIC variations and mains harmonic distortion levels. The power spectra of magnetic field fluctuations and GIC variations during the sudden storm commencement with no harmonic distortion showed low levels of low frequency power (5 minutes). This low frequency component of the magnetic field power spectrum appears necessary for mains harmonic distortion to occur.

Abstract: The first example of a fully edible biofuel cell (BFC), based solely on highly biocompatible food materials without any additional external mediators, is described. The new BFC energy-harvesting approach relies on a variety of edible plant/mushroom extract/vegetable oil/charcoal paste biocatalytic electrodes and represents an attractive route for energy harvesting towards ingestible biomedical devices. The edible BFC anode and cathode paste materials consist of biocatalytic rich mushroom, apple, plum and banana plant tissues, along with dietary activated charcoal and water-immiscible olive oil, corn oil, and sesame oil for creating the paste matrix. The ethanol/O2 BFC relies on a bioanode, based on ethanol oxidation induced by the intrinsic biocatalytic activity of its mushroom component, along with a biocathode based on oxygen-reducing apple extract containing polyphenol-oxidase and phenolic compounds. The integrated natural catalytic system and selective biocatalytic activity of the natural extracts offer successful operation of BFCs without any extra mediators or membrane separating the anode and the cathode. The mushroom/apple/olive oil-based BFC displays a favorable power density of 282 μW cm-2 with an open circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.24 V. The power and OCV signals are linearly proportional to ethanol levels and indicate promise for self-powered alcohol sensing. The food-based BFCs were reproducible and able to maintain a power performance of over 80% of their initial output for four hours. These edible energy-harvesting BFCs hold great promise for the next-generation of ingestible devices and smart self-powered biosensors for monitoring health and the digestive system.

Abstract: Large geomagnetic storms are a known space weather hazard to power transmission networks due to the effects of Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs). However, research in this area has been hampered by a lack of GIC observations. Previous studies have noted that New Zealand is unusually fortunate in having a comparatively dense, high quality, set of GIC measurements, spanning >60 transformers in >20 substations. However, due to operational reasons these observations are clustered in the mid and lower South Island. In this paper we analyze space weather‐induced GIC impact patterns over the entire country by using a different set of sensors that monitor levels of harmonic distortion, with even and odd harmonics measured separately. GICs lead to half cycle transformer saturation and is one of the few ways in which even harmonics are produced in a well run power transmission network. We make use of harmonic distortion measurements at 377 circuit breakers made at 126 separate locations. Focusing on the intense geomagnetic storm activity during 06 to 09 September 2017, we show how the even harmonic distortion observations provide a useful new picture of GIC‐stressed transformers. These observations demonstrate how GIC effects can be monitored by using even harmonic distortion in locations where no GIC measurements are present (for example, the most of the North Island). We understand harmonic distortion measurements are fairly common in electrical networks and could provide a new tool for Space Weather researchers.

Abstract: The G2019S mutation in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) is a common cause of familial Parkinson’s disease (PD). This mutation results in dopaminergic neurodegeneration via dysregulated protein translation, although how alterations in protein synthesis contributes to neurodegeneration in human neurons is not known. Here we define the translational landscape in LRRK2-mutant dopaminergic neurons derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) via ribosome profiling. We found that mRNAs that have complex secondary structure in the 5’ untranslated region (UTR) are translated more efficiently in G2019S LRRK2 neurons. This leads to the enhanced translation of multiple genes involved in Ca2+ regulation and to increased Ca2+ influx and elevated intracellular Ca2+ levels, a major contributor to PD pathogenesis. This study reveals a link between dysregulated translation control and Ca2+ homeostasis in G2019S LRRK2 human dopamine neurons, which potentially contributes to the progressive and selective dopaminergic neurotoxicity in PD.

Abstract: The G2019S mutation in leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) is a common cause of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and results in age-related dopamine neuron loss and locomotor dysfunction in Drosophila melanogaster through an aberrant increase in bulk neuronal protein synthesis. Under non-pathologic conditions, protein synthesis is tightly controlled by metabolic regulation. Whether nutritional and metabolic influences on protein synthesis can modulate the pathogenic effect of LRRK2 on protein synthesis and thereby impact neuronal loss is a key unresolved question. Here, we show that LRRK2 G2019S-induced neurodegeneration is critically dependent on dietary amino acid content. Low dietary amino acid concentration prevents aberrant protein synthesis and blocks LRRK2 G2019S-mediated neurodegeneration in Drosophila and rat primary neurons. Unexpectedly, a moderately high amino acid diet also blocks dopamine neuron loss and motor deficits in Drosophila through a separate mechanism involving stress-responsive activation of 5’-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and neuroprotective induction of autophagy, implicating the importance of protein homeostasis to neuronal viability. At the highest amino acid diet of the range tested, PD-related neurodegeneration occurs in an age-related manner, but is also observed in control strains, suggesting that it is independent of mutant LRRK2 expression. We propose that dietary influences on protein synthesis and autophagy are critical determinants of LRRK2 neurodegeneration, opening up possibilities for future therapeutic intervention.

43. The Pricing and Risk of Dividends by Maturity: Theory and Evidence from the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: A large literature is concerned with measuring economic uncertainty and quantifying its impact on real decisions, such as investment, hiring, and R&D, and ultimately economic growth. The COVID-19 pandemic underscores the importance of timely measures of uncertainty and expected growth across horizons. Asset prices, such as dividend futures and index options, provide particularly useful measures as they are forward looking and available at high frequencies. We extend this literature by using new data on the prices of options on index-level dividends, from which we can compute implied dividend volatility. These implied volatilities differ from the VIX which measures uncertainty about stock prices, not only uncertainty about dividends. We construct a term structure of implied dividend volatilities that characterizes how uncertainty varies across horizons. We study how this term structure developed over the COVID-19 crisis, documenting a substantial increase in the volatility of near-future dividends that lingers even as the volatility of the overall market portfolio has started to fall. In addition to introducing this market, we also provide new theoretical results that show how these data can be used to derive lower bounds on expected dividend returns and on expected growth rates, by maturity. This provides an alternative to methods used in the literature using vector autoregressions or survey expectations, and sharpens alternative bounds in the literature.

44. Small-Group Investigation of the True Goals Curriculum with High School Students: A Randomized Control Study

Abstract: This is the second in a series of two studies examining the impact of the True Goals (TG) school counseling curriculum on important constructs related to school success for students in elementary, middle, and high school. In this study, TG was implemented as a small-group intervention with 47 students in grades 9–12 across two schools and two school districts in the Southwest region of the United States. We used a waitlist control design with randomized assignment to intervention and control groups to assess the impact of the TG small-group intervention on students’ (a) academic self-efficacy and (b) social self-efficacy. Results showed a significant difference between the intervention and control groups on post-intervention scores regarding social self-efficacy, with moderate effect size. We offer implications for high school counselors' use of the TG curriculum to increase social self-efficacy of students. In this, the first of the two studies, 43 students in Grades 4 through 7 participated in the intervention delivered by two school counselor trainees, across two schools in one school district in the Southwest region of the United States. The study used a waitlist control design with a randomized assignment to intervention and control groups to assess the impact of the TG small-group intervention on (a) students’ goal-setting skills; (b) students’ academic self-regulation; and (c) teachers’ rating of students’ motivation, self-knowledge, self-direction, and relationships. Results indicated that students in the treatment group showed significantly higher scores in motivation, self-knowledge, self-direction, and relationship skills than students in the control group, with a large effect size. Abstract: Background: Uterine prolapse is an obstetric emergency because the exposed tissue can present edema, devitalization or even gangrene, depending on the evolution time and on the severity of circulatory changes. Haemorrhage due to the rupture of ovarian or uterine vessels can evolve rapidly to hypovolemic shock. More rarely, secondary thromboembolism to the uterine strangulation can be developed, complication that can also lead to death. This study reports the case of a Brazilian Molosser bitch treated by reducing total uterine prolapse, complemented with hysteropexy, in order to prevent recurrence and maintain its reproductive ability. Case: A 5-year-old Brazilian Molosser bitch was attended presenting double firm and tubular mass protruding through the vulva. The patient gave birth to five live pups, the last two of which needed to be pulled. Two days after parturition, she had abdominal contraction when a mass protruded from the vagina. A total uterine prolapse was diagnosed, since both uterine horns were found exposed and inverted, with exposition of the endometrium and the areas of placental implantation, together with the body of the uterus. The tissue was apparently edematous and lightly parched, with the presence of strange bodies, but without signals of circulatory complications or lacerations that could turn a possible reduction and maintenance of the uterus unfeasible. Due to interest of the tutor in preserving the reproductive ability, an internal reduction via ventral medial celiotomy and the fixation of the uterus in the lateral abdominal wall (hysteropexy) was chosen in order to diminish the possibility of relapse in future parturition.Discussion: The definitive treatment of the uterine prolapse can be realized through ovariohysterectomy when the exposed uterine tissue is highly compromised or there is vessel rupture or no reproductive purpose for the female. The amputation of everted tissue through the vulva is also an option, but the risk of intracavitary bleeding during tissue resection must be considered when the uterine and ovarian artery and vein escape to the interior of the abdomen without according hemostasis. In cases which there are no complications of the prolapsed tissue and is desired to maintain the reproductive ability of the female, the internal reduction with hysteropexy is recommended. As the etiology of the uterine prolapse is a condition bound to several factors, in between them multiple pregnancies, relaxation of the uterine ligaments and genetic factors, conditions which can be associated to the cause of the prolapse in the mentioned patient, the hysteropexy was preferred as a complementary technique to uterine preservation and prevention of the prolapse relapse in a possible new parturition. In this case, the reduction of prolapse followed by hysteropexy was preferred, because the female dog was apparently well, without signs of complication of the prolapsed tissue and with satisfactory preoperative evaluation. Adding these to the request of the tutor in maintaining the reproductive ability of the female, since the procedure would not pose as a life risk to it. The absence of severe lacerations and circulatory complications in the prolapsed uterus of the bitch under study and the non-detection of toxemia and septicemia corroborated to the reduction and preservation of the uterus. Even though the uterine prolapse is a rare disease, it is necessary to improve surgical techniques that enable the conservation of the female dog in reproduction. In situations of viability of the prolapsed tissue, the technique of hysteropexy in abdominal wall showed itself effective, concluding that hysteropexy is feasible and efficient as a complementary procedure to the reduction of uterine prolapse, having contributed to avoid relapse and maintaining the reproductive of the subject related in this article.

Under nonpathologic conditions, protein synthesis is tightly controlled by metabolic regulation. Whether nutritional and metabolic influences on protein synthesis can modulate the pathogenic effect of LRRK2 on protein synthesis and thereby impact neuronal loss is a key unresolved question. Here, we show that LRRK2 G2019S-induced neurodegeneration is critically dependent on dietary amino acid content in Drosophila studies with both sexes. Low dietary amino acid concentration prevents aberrant protein synthesis and blocks LRRK2 G2019S-mediated neurodegeneration in Drosophila and rat primary neurons. Unexpectedly, a moderately high-amino acid diet also blocks dopamine neuron loss and motor deficits in Drosophila through a separate mechanism involving stress-responsive activation of 5′-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and neuroprotective induction of autophagy, implicating the importance of protein homeostasis to neuronal viability. At the highest amino acid diet of the range tested, PD-related neurodegeneration occurs in an age-related manner, but is also observed in control strains, suggesting that it is independent of mutant LRRK2 expression. We propose that dietary influences on protein synthesis and autophagy are critical determinants of LRRK2 neurodegeneration, opening up possibilities for future therapeutic intervention. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Parkinson9s disease (PD) prevalence is projected to rise as populations continue to age, yet there are no current therapeutic approaches that delay or stop disease progression. A broad role for leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) mutations in familial and idiopathic PD has emerged. Here, we show that dietary amino acids are important determinants of neurodegeneration in a Drosophila model of LRRK2 PD. Restricting all amino acids effectively suppresses dopaminergic neuron loss and locomotor deficits and is associated with reduced protein synthesis, while moderately high amino acids similarly attenuate these PD-related phenotypes through a stress-responsive induction of 5′-AMP-activated protein kinase and autophagy. These studies suggest that diet plays an important role in the development of PD-related phenotypes linked to LRRK2.
