Literature records of chewing lice (Phthiraptera) from mammals in Malaysia were checked and reviewed, resulting in a list of 13 confirmed species belonging to eight genera (Bovicola, Felicola, Gliricola, Gyropus, Haematomyzus, Heterodoxus, Lorisicola, Trichodectes) from four families (Boopiidae, Gyropidae, Haematomyzidae, Trichodectidae) in three suborders (Amblycera, Ischnocera, Rhynchophthirina). We present a checklist of those 13 chewing lice recorded from Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo, including hosts, localities, and literature references. An additional 12 species are listed and discussed as possibly occurring in this country. A host-louse list is also given.

The genus Microcavia includes five living species of caviomorph rodents endemic to southern South America. Microcavia jayat, the most recently described species, was recorded in only seven localities of Chaco Seco, in Santiago del Estero province, north-central Argentina. Based on cranial and mandibular remains, corresponding to 23 individuals recovered from owl pellets, we report the first record of this species in La Rioja province, Argentina. This new record implies a southwestern extension of approximately 390 km from the previously known nearest locality, and constitutes its first record in Chaco Serrano habitats within Chaco Seco ecoregion. El género Microcavia incluye cinco especies vivientes de roedores caviomorfos endémicos del sur de América del Sur. Microcavia jayat, la especie descrita más recientemente, se registró en sólo siete localidades del Chaco Seco de la provincia de Santiago del Estero, centro-norte de Argentina. Sobre la base de restos cráneo mandibulares, correspondientes a 23 individuos recuperados de egagrópilas de lechuza, informamos el primer registro de esta especie en la provincia de La Rioja. Although rodents can move fast, they are in general considered non-cursorial mammals, with the notable exception of some species within the suborder Caviomorpha which are convergent with small-sized artiodactyls. The mara, Dolichotis patagonum (average body mass: 8 kg), is a member of the family Caviidae which occupies relatively open habitats in southern South America, and shows remarkable anatomical traits associated to fast locomotion. These include elongated limbs, especially their distal segments, a digitigrade foot posture, and muscles attached near limb joints. However, its locomotor behavior is not yet well understood. Here we focus on the mara’s locomotor kinematics, especially on the gaits performed at different speeds, and provide new data and analyses. By means of high-speed video-recordings, it was observed that maras use lateral walk at low speeds and pace at moderate speeds. By implementing half bound maras reached their maximum speed at 36 km/h, i.e. 14.3 body length/s. It was also confirmed that maras are able to perform pronking, a probable alarm or fitness signal. Kinematic parameters (e.g. duty factor; stride frequency), and comparisons of running speed with other caviomorph and artiodactyl species are also provided. Aunque relativamente veloces, los roedores en general son considerados mamíferos no cursoriales, con la notable excepción de algunas especies dentro del suborden Caviomorpha, las que son consideradas convergentes con artiodáctilos de pequeño tamaño. La mara Dolichotis patagonum, es una especie perteneciente a la Familia Caviidae que se distribuye en hábitats relativamente abiertos de la porción sur de Sudamérica. Las maras presentan una anatomía especialmente adecuada para alcanzar elevadas velocidades de desplazamiento, incluyendo extremidades alargadas (especialmente sus segmentos distales), una postura digitígrada, e inserciones musculares cercanas a las articulaciones de los miembros. En el presente trabajo nos enfocamos en la cinemática de la locomoción de la mara, especialmente en el tipo de paso (en inglés “gait”) utilizado a diferentes velocidades, aportando nuevos datos y análisis. Mediante el uso de video filmación de alta velocidad, se observó que las maras utilizan la caminata lateral a bajas velocidades, mientras que la marcha al paso (a veces denominada ambladura) se utiliza a velocidades moderadas. Mediante el medio salto las maras alcanzaron su velocidad máxima, la cual fue de 36 km/h, i.e. 14.3 longitud corporal/s. Se confirmó también que las maras son capaces de realizar pronking, probablemente una señal de alarma o de fortaleza física. Se calcularon parámetros cinemáticos tales como el factor de carga, la longitud y la frecuencia del paso. The Subfamily Dolichotinae comprises two living species, Dolichotis patagonum, an emblematic component of the Patagonian fauna of Argentina, and Dolichotis salinicola, endemic to the Chaco ecoregion. These two species are also considered as pertaining to different genera, D. patagonum and Pediolagus salinicola. The oldest records of Dolichotis come from the Pliocene–Pleistocene boundary of northeastern and central Argentina, and the late Pleistocene from southern Brazil, and northern and southern Uruguay. Five fossil species were described from the Pleistocene and Holocene in central Argentina (D. minor, D. plathycephala, D. major, D. intermedia, and D. improla). “Orthomyctera” chapalmalense was described on the basis of remains from the coast of Mar del Plata and Chapadmalal, Buenos Aires Province, Chapadmalal Formation (late Pliocene, 3.74–3.04 Ma). A new detailed description of the holotype and its comparison with closely related taxa suggests that this species is more related to the genus Dolichotis, resulting in the new combination D. chapalmalense. The close affinities with Dolichotis revealed by phylogenetic analyses combined with molecular and morphological characters were corroborated in previous analyses. The origin of this lineage extends at least to a million years ago, taking the record back to the middle Pliocene. The evolutionary novelties that appear at least since the Pliocene, marking a key period for the Caviidae, are analyzed. The aim of this work is the analysis of histochemical and morphometric properties of the masseter muscles of Ctenomys talarum and Cavia aperea. The former belongs to a subterranean rodent clade, Ctenomyidae, which has evolved a robust masticatory apparatus adapted to chisel-tooth digging and processing of abrasive grasses; C. aperea belongs to the family Caviidae, with relatively graceful jaws and mandibular musculatures, consistent with less mechanically challenging diets. Adult males were captured, immediately transported to the laboratory, and euthanized in a CO2 chamber. The musculus masseter superficialis and musculus masseter profundus on the left side of the animals were used to analyze the histochemical composition of the fiber types treated with myosin adenosine triphosphatase, succinate dehydrogenase and periodic acid Schiff. The mean fiber diameters, relative areas, and frequencies of each muscle fiber type were calculated. The mm. masseter superficialis and masseter profundus on the right side were used to measure the physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). Based on this measurement, the internal force (F) was estimated. In the m. masseter profundus of both species and in the m. masseter superficialis of C. aperea intermediate fast oxidative-glycolytic fibers (FOGi) predominated. In the mm. masseter superficialis and masseter profundus of C. talarum the relative area of fast glycolytic (FG) fibers was greater than that of the muscles of C. aperea, whose main muscle fiber component is FOGi fibers. When corrected for body mass differences, PCSA was higher for the mm. masseter superficialis of C. talarum. This and the larger relative area of FG fibers, probably contributes to the exertion of large bite forces in C. talarum, as measured in previous studies.

An efficacious period of two topical antifungal drugs was compared in a Trichophyton mentagrophytes-infected onychomycosis model in guinea pigs treated with antifungal drugs prior to infection. Luliconazole 5% (LLCZ) and efinaconazole 10% (EFCZ) test solutions were applied to the animals’ nails once daily for 2 weeks followed by a nontreatment period of 2, 4, and 8 weeks. After each nontreatment period, the nails were artificially infected by the fungus. Drug efficacy was quantitatively evaluated by qPCR and histopathological examination of the nails collected following a 4-week post-infection period. The fungal infection was confirmed in the untreated group. Both LLCZ and EFCZ prevented fungal infection in the treated groups with the nontreatment period of 2 weeks. After the nontreatment period of 4 weeks, no infection was observed in the LLCZ-treated group; however, infection into the nail surface and fungal invasion into the nail bed were observed in the EFCZ-treated group. After the nontreatment period of 8 weeks, fungi were found in the nail surface and nail bed in some nails treated with EFCZ; however, no infection was observed in the nail bed of the LLCZ-treated group. The results suggest that LLCZ possesses longer-lasting antifungal effect in nails of the guinea pigs than EFCZ, and that this animal model could be useful for translational research between preclinical and clinical studies to evaluate the pharmacological efficacy of antifungal drugs to treat onychomycosis. This experimentally shown longer-lasting preventive effects of LLCZ could also decrease the likelihoods of onychomycosis recurrence clinically.

Background Differences in cardiovascular disease risk between men and women have been partly attributed to the cardioprotective effects of oestrogen. Long-term oestrogen deficiency has been shown to alter cardiomyocyte intracellular calcium handling, but little is known about the mechanisms by which these changes occur. Oestrogen is thought to induce both genomic and non-genomic effects on cardiomyocytes, the latter including phosphorylation of calcium handling proteins. Purpose This study addresses the hypothesis that long-term oestrogen deficiency increases protein kinase A (PKA) and calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) phosphorylation in cardiomyocytes, resulting in altered intracellular calcium regulation. Methods Female guinea pigs underwent sham (n = 7) or ovariectomy (OVx) (n = 8) operations and 150 days later, left ventricular myocytes were enzymatically isolated and loaded with fluo-4AM to monitor intracellular calcium. Calcium transients (CaT) were recorded using confocal microscopy. PKA and CaMKII phosphorylation were inhibited by superfusing cells with specific inhibitors, PKI and AIP, respectively. Experiments were carried out both in the presence and absence of β-agonist, isoprenaline (ISO), and relative changes to CaT parameters compared between OVx and sham cells. Results CaT amplitude was greater (p Conclusion Our findings suggest ovariectomy alters intracellular calcium regulation and some of these effects appear to be mediated by alterations in phosphorylation of calcium handling proteins and/or changes to sites of phosphorylation.

OBJECTIVES: To induce Neurolathyrism in guinea pig fed with Lathyrus sativus diet. METHODS: Twenty four guinea pigs were randomly distributed into 3 groups, 8 animals each. Groups I control fed with control diet, Group II low toxin group fed with 90% Lathyrus diet containing 100 mg β-ODAP/100 g Lathyrus and Group III fed with 90% Lathyrus diet with 1060 mg β-ODAP/100 gLathyrus. The experiment was for 2 months. Diet intake, body weight, protein carbonyl, catalase, MDA, specific activity of electron transport complexes I, II, III and IV in cortex and cerebellum were analyzed. Histopathological and morphological changes were studied by electron microscopy RESULTS: The diet intake and bodyweight was significantly reduced in both the experimental groups (II & III) as compared group I. Protein carbonyls levels were significantly increased in motor cortex region of group II & III as compared to group I. The catalase activity in cortex region was significantly decreased in group II & III compared to group I. The MDA levels in motar cortex region were significantly higher in the group II & III as compared to group I. Whereas the MDA levels in the cerebellum was significantly higher in group III as compared to group I. The activity of complex I and II of cortex was decreased significantly in group II and III as compared to group I. However, there was no significant change in specific activity of electron transport complex II and complex III. The nitrate levels in the group II & III were significantly higher than group I in the cortex region. However, there were no significant differences in the nitrate levels in the cerebellum region. Electron microscopic study of motor cortex showed that the extensive degeneration of motor neuron was observed in group II and III compared to group I. CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of ninety % Lathyrus sativus dietfor 2 months induces neurolathyrism in guinea pigs. Background Filoviruses including Ebola, Sudan, and other species are emerging zoonotic pathogens representing a significant public health concern with high outbreak potential, and they remain a potential bioterrorism-related threat. We have developed a despeciated equine Ebola polyclonal antibody (E-EIG) postexposure treatment against Ebola virus (EBOV) and evaluated its efficacy in the guinea pig model of EBOV infection. Methods Guinea pigs were infected with guinea pig-adapted EBOV (Mayinga strain) and treated with various dose levels of E-EIG (20-100 mg/kg) twice daily for 6 days starting at 24 h postinfection. The E-EIG was also assessed for neutralization activity against related filoviruses including EBOV strains Mayinga, Kikwit, and Makona and the Bundibugyo and Tai Forest ebolavirus species. Results Treatment with E-EIG conferred 83% to 100% protection in guinea pigs. The results demonstrated a comparable neutralization activity (range, 1:512-1:896) of E-EIG against all tested strains, suggesting the potential for cross-protection with the polyclonal antibody therapeutic. Conclusions This study showed that equine-derived polyclonal antibodies are efficacious against lethal EBOV disease in a relevant animal model. Furthermore, the studies support the utility of the equine antibody platform for the rapid production of a therapeutic product in the event of an outbreak by a filovirus or other zoonotic pathogen.

Occupational and environmental exposures to organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are associated with increased incidence of asthma and other pulmonary diseases. Although the canonical mechanism of OP neurotoxicity is inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), it was previously reported that the OP chlorpyrifos (CPF) causes airway hyperreactivity (AHR) in guinea pigs at levels that do not inhibit lung or brain AChE. The guinea pig is considered to have inherently hyperresponsive airways, thus, cross-species validation is needed to confirm relevance to humans. Additionally, sex differences in asthma incidence have been demonstrated in the human population, but whether OP-induced AHR is sex-dependent has not been systematically studied in a preclinical model. In this study, 8-week old male and female Sprague Dawley rats were administered CPF at doses causing comparable AChE inhibition in whole lung homogenate (30 mg/kg in males, 7 mg/kg in females, sc) prior to assessing pulmonary mechanics in response to electrical stimulation of the vagus nerves at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 7 d or 14 d post-exposure in males, and 24 h or 7 d post-exposure in females. CPF significantly potentiated vagally induced airway resistance and tissue elastance at 7 d post-exposure in males, and at 24 h and 7 d post-exposure in females. These effects occurred independent of significant AChE inhibition in cerebellum, blood, trachealis, or isolated airway, suggesting that AChE independent OP-induced airway hyperreactivity is a cross-species phenomenon. These findings have significant implications for assessing the risk posed by CPF, and potentially other OPs, to human health and safety.

Caviidae is one of the groups of rodents with the greatest ecomorphological disparity, and with currently three known lineages: Caviinae (cuises), Dolichotinae (maras), and Hydrochoerinae (capybaras). Caviinae include small caviids represented by three extant genera (Microcavia, Cavia, and Galea) and three fossils forms (Dolicavia, Palaeocavia, and Neocavia). In Argentina, the fossil record of Caviinae is continuous and abundant since the late Miocene. Neocavia, specifically, is represented by different species recorded in the late Miocene-Pliocene. Here, we describe a new species of Neocavia from the late Miocene-early Pliocene of the Cerro Azul Formation (La Pampa Province, Argentina), and provide a re-description of already known species (Neocavia lozanoi and “Neocavia depressidens”). Also, we perform a more comprehensive review of the genus and include the Neocavia species in a phylogenetic context within Caviinae. We analyze the main patterns of the evolution of the tympanic bullae within Caviidae, and infer about a possible occasional fossorial habit of Neocavia. The morphological and phylogenetic analyses indicate that Neocavia is more closely related to Dolicavia and Microcavia than to the other Caviinae, and confirm the monophyly of the genus, with at least two clearly differentiable species. Since this study cannot confirm the systematic position and validity of “N. depressidens”, we suggest not to use this taxon as a biostratigraphic indicator. Fil: Madozzo Jaén, María Carolina. Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine whether retinal gap junctions (GJs) via connexin 36 (Cx36, mediating coupling of many retinal cell types) and horizontal cell (HC-HC) coupling, are involved in emmetropization. Methods Guinea pigs (3 weeks old) were monocularly form deprived (FD) or raised without FD (in normal visual [NV] environment) for 2 days or 4 weeks; alternatively, they wore a -4 D lens (hyperopic defocus [HD]) or 0 D lens for 2 days or 1 week. FD and NV eyes received daily subconjunctival injections of a nonspecific GJ-uncoupling agent, 18-β-Glycyrrhetinic Acid (18-β-GA). The amounts of total Cx36 and of phosphorylated Cx36 (P-Cx36; activated state that increases cell-cell coupling), in the inner and outer plexiform layers (IPLs and OPLs), were evaluated by quantitative immunofluorescence (IF), and HC-HC coupling was evaluated by cut-loading with neurobiotin. Results FD per se (excluding effect of light-attenuation) increased HC-HC coupling in OPL, whereas HD did not affect it. HD for 2 days or 1 week had no significant effect on retinal content of Cx36 or P-Cx36. FD for 4 weeks decreased the total amounts of Cx36 and P-Cx36, and the P-Cx36/Cx36 ratio, in the IPL. Subconjunctival 18-β-GA induced myopia in NV eyes and increased the myopic shifts in FD eyes, while reducing the amounts of Cx36 and P-Cx36 in both the IPL and OPL. Conclusions These results suggest that cell-cell coupling via GJs containing Cx36 (particularly those in the IPL) plays a role in emmetropization and form deprivation myopia (FDM) in mammals. Although both FD and 18-β-GA induced myopia, they had opposite effects on HC-HC coupling. These findings suggest that HC-HC coupling in the OPL might not play a significant role in emmetropization and myopia development.

El género Galea (Rodentia, Caviidae) incluye cinco especies vivientes y dos extintas de cávidos terrestres y herbívoros, que ocupan pastizales y matorrales rocosos, tanto en áreas altas como bajas de América del Sur. Algunas muestras fósiles del Pleistoceno-Holoceno del centro-este de Argentina han sido referidas como Galea sp., G. musteloides o G. cf. musteloides y finalmente se describieron como una nueva especie bajo el nombre de G. tixiensis. Sin embargo, estudios recientes basados en series grandes de individuos fallaron en encontrar diferencias morfológicas cualitativas entre G. lecucoblephara y G. tixiensis. Sobre la base de estos hallazgos, en esta contribución revisamos el estatus taxonómico de la especie extinta G. tixiensis. Se examinaron 110 individuos de las tres subespecies actualmente reconocidas de G. leucoblephara (i.e., G. l. demissa, G. l. leucoblephara y G. l. littoralis) de Argentina, Bolivia y Paraguay. Se registraron nueve medidas cráneo-dentarias. Los datos cuantitativos se sometieron a un análisis de componentes principales (PCA) con el fin de identificar la contribución de cada medida a la varianza total. Los caracteres cualitativos se evaluaron a través de las comparaciones de los rasgos supuestamente diagnósticos de G. tixiensis con la variabilidad representada por las muestras recientes. Los espacios multivariados de las tres subespecies estudiadas se superpusieron ampliamente en el PCA, lo que sugiere que estos taxones no difieren significativamente en la figura del cráneo. El holotipo de G. tixiensis se ubicó dentro del morfoespacio correspondiente a muestras recientes de G. l. littoralis. Los caracteres cualitativos supuestamente diagnósticos de G. tixiensis también se verificaron en muestras recientes de G. leucoblephara, en particular de G. l. littoralis. Sobre la base de sus rasgos craneanos cualitativos y cuantitativos se sugiere que G. tixiensis es un sinónimo de G. leucoblephara. Los mayores valores para algunos rasgos craneanos cuantitativos en las muestras fósiles –comparadas con las actuales– son reinterpretados en este trabajo como una respuesta ecofenotipica a las condiciones climáticas más severas durante el Holoceno. The genus Galea (Rodentia, Caviidae) includes five living and two extinct species of terrestrial and herbivorous cavies that inhabit grasslandsand rocky scrub areas at both high and low elevations in South America. Fossil samples from the late Pleistocene-Holocene from central-easternArgentina have been referred to as Galea sp., G musteloides or G. cf. musteloides and finally described as a new species under the name of G. tixiensis. However, recent studies based on large series of individuals fail to find qualitative morphological differences between G. leucoblephara and G.tixiensis. Based on these findings, in this contribution we reviewed the taxonomic status of the fossil species G. tixiensis. A total of 110 individualsof the three currently recognized subspecies of G. leucoblephara (i. e., G. l. demissa, G. l. leucoblephara and G. l. littoralis) from Argentina Boliviaand Paraguay were examined. Nine craniodental measurements were recorded. Quantitative data were subjected to a principal component analysis (PCA) in order to identify the contribution of each measurement to the total variance. Qualitative characters were evaluated through the comparisons of the diagnostic traits of G. tixiensis with the variability derived from the recent samples. PCA showed a high overlap of the multivariate spaces of the three subspecies studied, suggesting that they do not differ significantly in terms of cranial shape. The holotype of G. tixiensis was allocated within the morphospace of the recent G. l. littoralis samples. Qualitative traits diagnostic of G. tixiensis were also recorded in recent samples of G. leucoblephara, in particular of G. l. littoralis. Based on both qualitative and quantitative cranial traits, we suggest that G. tixiensis is a synonym of G. leucoblephara. The morphological traits supposedly unique to G. tixiensis were also recorded in specimens of living populations of G. l. littoralis. The large values of some quantitative cranial traits in fossil samples -compared to living ones- are reinterpreted here as an ecophenotypical response to the more severe climatic conditions of the Holocene. We undertook a comprehensive, critical review of literature concerning the distribution, conservation status, and taxonomy of species of mammals endemic to the Cerrado and the Caatinga, the two largest biomes of the South American Dry-Diagonal. We present species accounts and lists of species, which we built with criteria that, in our opinion, yielded results with increased scientific rigor relative to previously published lists – e.g., excluding nominal taxa whose statuses as species have been claimed only on the basis of unpublished data, incomplete taxonomic work, or weak evidence. For various taxa, we provided arguments regarding species distributions, conservation and taxonomic statuses previously lacking in the literature. Two major findings are worth highlighting. First, we unveil the existence of a group of species endemic to both the Cerrado and the Caatinga (i.e., present in both biomes and absent in all other biomes). From the biogeographic point of view, this group, herein referred to as Caatinga-Cerrado endemics, deserves attention as a unit – just as in case of the Caatinga-only and the Cerrado-only endemics. We present preliminary hypotheses on the origin of these three endemic faunas (Cerrado-only, Caatinga-only, and Caatinga-Cerrado endemics). Secondly, we discovered that a substantial portion of the endemic mammalian faunas of the Caatinga and the Cerrado faces risks of extinction that are unrecognized in the highly influential Red List of Threatened Species published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). “Data deficient” is a category that misrepresents the real risks of extinction of these species considering that (a) some of these species are known only from a handful of specimens collected in a single or a few localities long ago; (b) the Cerrado and the Caatinga have been sufficiently sampled to guarantee collection of additional specimens of these species if they were abundant; (c) natural habitats of the Cerrado and the Caatinga have been substantially altered or lost in recent decades. Failures either in the design of the IUCN criteria or in their application to assign categories of extinction risks represent an additional important threat to these endemic faunas because their real risks of extinctions become hidden. It is imperative to correct this situation, particularly considering that these species are associated to habitats that are experiencing fast transformation into areas for agriculture, at an unbearable cost for biodiversity.

Quantication of morphological diversity among herbivorous mammals and comparisonsbetween herbivorous marsupials and placentals are scarce. In this report we compared morphological variationof the skull and mandible in three representatives of caviid rodents and three species of macropodid marsupials,whose size is comparable, using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics. We applied two levels ofcomparison, one pointed to a placental-marsupial dichotomy and another pointed to the intra-variationin each group. We also performed an analysis of modularity based on a likelihood approach in order toevaluate dierent modularity models and analyzing the intra- and inter-module correlation (i.e., morphologicalintegration). Beyond strong morphological dierences that split caviids and macropodids along the rst axesof the morphospaces of the cranium and mandible, they shared similar allometric shape changes, includingthe enlargement of muscular attachment areas and lengthening of the diastema. In both clades, the largestvalue of inter-module correlation (as a measure of modular integration) was found for the oral-nasal andorbit modules. We reported relatively low values of within-module correlation for the oral-nasal and molarmodules in macropodids while the opposite was recorded for caviids. Beyond the great dierences in cranialstructure, one of the factors that inuence the patterns of morphological variation and dierential integrationwas the processing of plant matter which seems to induce strong structural changes in both clades, in whichthe eciency of the masticatory apparatus is resolved in a similar way. Foram utilizados oito animais e duas peças anatômicas encefálicas para o estudo descritivo comparando-os com animais domésticos e outros roedores, sendo observado redução dos sulcos e giros cerebrais, bulbos olfatórios e hipófise proeminentes e evidenciação do ventrículo olfatório. Além das estruturas do encéfalo, foram avaliados também o bulbo ocular e a órbita desses animais obtendo a média (+ DP) do comprimento axial do bulbo ocular de 24,1 + 1,8 mm, profundidade da câmara anterior de 2,8 + 1,8 mm, espessura da lente de 8,5 + 0,7 mm e espessura do nervo óptico de 2,9 + 0,6 mm e 2,6 + 0,6 mm para o terço proximal e distal, respectivamente. Com esses estudos, foi possível concluir que capivaras apresentaram sulcos e giros em maior proporção do que outros roedores e a hipófise e bulbo olfatório dessa espécie foram mais amplos quando comparado aos animais domésticos. Além disso, as estruturas da órbita apresentaram melhor detalhamento da sequência T1 de ressonância magnética e que as medidas, apesar de serem utilizadas na rotina ultrassonográfica, podem ser utilizadas como complemento para o estudo da órbita de capivara por meio da ressonância magnética. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomy of intracranial structures in living capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) providing more detailed information of brain, eye and orbit anatomy of this species. Eight capybaras and two anatomic encephalic specimens were used for the descriptive study comparing them with domestic animals and other rodents, observing reduction of the sulcus and gyrus, prominent olfactory bulb and pituitary, and presence of the olfactory ventricle. In addition, ocular bulb and orbit of these animals were also evaluated, obtaining the (+ SD) of the axial length of the eye bulb of 24.1 + 1.8 mm, anterior chamber depth of 2.8 + 0.6 mm, lens thickness of 8.5 + 0.7 mm, and optic nerve thickness of 2.6 + 0.6 and 2.9 + 0.6 mm from proximal to distal portion, respectively. In conclusion, capybaras had sulcus and gyrus in a greater proportion than other rodents and the hypophysis and olfactory bulb were more extensive when compared to domestic animals. In addition, the orbital structures presented better detail on T1 MR images and that measurements used in the ultrasound routine can be used as a complement for the study of the orbit of capybaras by means of MRI exams. 2015/24811-3

This study aimed to link the plants consumed by Cavia magna and their availability in the environment, (Ilha dos Marinheiros) determining its food preference. In the environment, 96 species were recorded. Twenty-four plant species were identified in the fecal samples. There wasn’t significant difference in the composition of plant species among seasons, although the variation was significant between the island’s northern and southern areas concerning the fecal samples. Mantel test’s results supported that the availability of vegetation has significant influence on the species consumed. Being that the most consumed species (present on the feces) were distant to their distribution areas, we propose that C. magna of Ilha dos Marinheiros actively search and select items to eat, showing food preference for some species.

A new hydrochoerine rodent, Cardiatherium calingastaense sp. nov. (Caviidae), is described based on the specimen INGEO-PV 87. It was recovered from the late Miocene Las Flores Formation, cropping out at the Puchuzum locality, San Juan Province, Argentina. The new species is based on a particular combination of characters, among which the following can be highlighted: p4 with internal fissures equally deep as in Cardiatherium paranense, secondary external fissure as in Cardiatherium patagonicum, and lacking the fifth internal fissure and supernumerary internal fissure, as in C. paranense; m3 with a conspicuous labial column in the posterior ramus of the second prism; very deep primary and secondary external fissures in upper cheek teeth, the former producing a labial strong step-shaped profile in M2; sagittal crest on the parietals; bullae small in ventral view; scars of the origin of the masseter medialis muscle with an anterior projection up to the level of the incisive foramen and the maxilla-premaxilla suture. The phylogenetic analysis supports the taxonomic proposal of creating a new species of Cardiatherium and shows C. calingastaense sp. nov. as the sister group of the other species of the genus. The lineage leading to the clade Cardiatherium + largest capybaras would have originated at least during the Chasicoan SALMA (early late Miocene). Cardiatherium calingastaense sp. nov. adds to the previous record of Cardiatherium chasicoense and Cardiatherium paranense in the late Miocene of San Juan and Mendoza provinces, respectively, thus increasing the diversity of capybaras in central-west Argentina. During the last decade, the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and evolutionary knowledge of the groups within Caviidae (i.e. Hydrochoerinae, Caviinae, and the stem eocardiids) has been improved and expanded. However, the evolutionary patterns of Dolichotinae are poorly known due to the lack of detailed taxonomic studies of their fossil forms. The subfamily Dolichotinae are known as patagonian mara (Dolichotis patagonum) and chacoan mara or “conejo de los palos” (Dolichotis [Pediolagus] salinicola) and, within Caviidae, are the second largest rodents after the capybaras. The subfamily presents its highest diversity in the late Miocene. Prodolichotis is represented by six species, but most of them have not been studied since their original description. An exhaustive description of the type species of Prodolichotis from the late Miocene-Pliocene of Northwest Argentina is here reported with the objective of filling the gaps and increasing the knowledge about the origin and diversification of the Dolichotinae. The phylogenetic analysis implemented here indicates that Prodolichotis prisca is one of the most basal species within Dolichotinae, suggesting that this group originated at least during the Miocene. Durant la dernière décennie, des progrès ont été accomplis quant à la taxonomie, la phylogénie et l’évolution des autres groupes au sein des Caviidae (c’est-à-dire Hydrochoerinae, Caviinae etla souche des Éocardiidés).Àl’inverse, le patron évolutif des Dolichotinae est mal connu, en raison de l’absence d’études taxonomiques détaillées des formes fossiles. La sousfamille des Dolichotinae est connue en tant que mara de Patagonie (Dolichotis patagonum) et mara du Chaco ou « conejo de los Palos » (Dolichotis [Pediolagus] salinicola). Ce sont les deuxièmes plus grandes espèces de la famille des Caviidae après les capybaras. Cette sousfamille présente sa plus grande diversité de fossiles à la fin du Miocène en Amérique du Sud. Prodolichotis est représenté par six espèces au milieu du Miocène, mais la majorité d’entre elles n’ont pas été étudiée depuis leur description originelle. The guinea pig has proven to be a reliable model for testing vaccine candidates against tuberculosis (TB) because of its capacity to produce human-like disease associated to primary TB, thus providing a more stringent test of the ability of a vaccine to prevent disease and deaths. Here, the BCGΔBCG1419c vaccine candidate, which previously has been shown to provide protection in mice, was tested in a guinea pig model. We found that this vaccine candidate was as effective as parental BCG in reducing M. tuberculosis H37Rv replication in lungs, and significantly reducing hematogenous spread to spleen at 60 days post-infection in comparison with BCG. Moreover, lung histopathological examination revealed comparable protection between the parental and mutant BCG strains, with some differences in prevention of primary lesions or necrosis at a single time point post-infection in a strain-dependent manner. Our results show that the BCGΔBCG1419c vaccine candidate is as effective as BCG in reducing M. tuberculosis H37Rv replication in lungs and reducing lung pathology, as well as significantly improving control of its dissemination to spleens up to 60 days post-infection.

Ser capaz de estudar estruturas anatômicas dos animais da fauna para fins científicos e prática clínica é de grande importância. Objetivamos descrever a osteologia geral normal de capivaras adultas Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (Linnaeus, 1766), usando amostras de ossos macerados e radiologia digital de alta resolução. O esqueleto axial e apendicular foi posteriormente comparado a achados anatômicos reportados anteriormente. Para esse fim, nós utilizamos de três cadáveres de capivaras adultas (duas fêmeas e um macho) com peso médio de cerca de 50 kg. cada. Algumas características morfológicas de cavidade específicas, especialmente na região do crânio, evidenciam a adaptação à vida aquática, como o formato alongado da cabeça, com olhos, orelhas e nariz localizados dorsalmente, para permanência sobre a água. O completo desenvolvimento morfológico ósseo é evidência de tamanho e suporte de peso do maior roedor, assim como de seus hábitos de alimentação e locomoção, sendo um herbívoro semiaquático, classificado como cursório (tendo membros adaptados à corrida), caso em que os autores acreditam deveria ser reclassificado como cursorial-natação/ mergulho. Além disso, argumentamos que deve ser considerada uma diferenciação entre H. hydrochaeris silvestris e H. hydrochaeris sinantropo, devido ao fato da variação substancial de peso, em alguns casos> 100%, inevitavelmente terá um impacto no desenvolvimento da estrutura óssea, influenciando, assim, a adaptação habitual e, consequentemente, suas implicações clínicas e manejo animal. A radiografia auxiliou na correlação e identificação de estruturas ósseas que não observadas em espécimes anatômicos, como o osso sesamóide, incluindo o ossículo lunar. Ademais, as radiografias foram particularmente úteis para uma melhor compreensão geral de procedimentos de intubação e cateterização. Acreditamos que este trabalho possa contribuir como referência de estudos anatômicos para estudantes e profissionais atuantes em clínica, cirurgia e pesquisa. Being able to study anatomical structures of wildlife species for science and clinical practice is of great importance. We aimed to describe the normal gross osteology of the common adult capybara Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (Linnaeus, 1766), using macerated bone specimens and high-resolution digital radiography. The complete axial and appendicular skeleton was further compared with previously reported anatomical findings. For this purpose, we used three adult capybara cadavers (two females and one male), with a mean bodyweight of ±50 kg. Some H. hydrochaeris-specific morphological characteristics, especially in the skull region, show evidence of adaptation to aquatic life, such as an elongated head shape, with eyes, ears, and nose, located dorsally, to stay above water. Additionally, the entire bone structure demonstrates the size and weight support of the largest rodent and its adaptation with respect to foraging and locomotion behaviors. As a semi-aquatic herbivore, classified as cursorial (having limbs adapted for running), the authors believe it should be reclassified as cursorial-swimming/diving. Moreover, we argue to consider a differentiation between H. hydrochaeris silvestris to H. hydrochaeris synanthrope, due to substantial weight variation, in some cases > 100%. This inevitably has an impact on the development of bone structure, thus influencing habitual adaptation, and consequently, its clinical implications and animal handling. Radiography exams helped in the identification of bone structures, which otherwise were not observed in anatomical specimens, such as ossa sesamoidea, including the ossicle lunulae. Likewise, the radiographs were particularly helpful in overall better comprehension of the intubation and catheterization procedures. We believe this work can contribute as a reference to anatomical studies for students and professionals acting in clinic, surgery, and research.

BackgroundIntrathecal infusion of opioids in dogs, sheep, and humans produces local space-occupying masses. To develop a small-animal model, the authors examined effects of intrathecal catheterization and morphine infusion in guinea pigs.MethodsUnder isoflurane, polyethylene or polyurethane catheters were advanced from the cisterna magna to the lumbar enlargement. Drugs were delivered as a bolus through the externalized catheter or continuously by subcutaneous minipumps. Hind paw withdrawal to a thermal stimulus was assessed. Spinal histopathology was systematically assessed in a blinded fashion. To assist in determining catheter placement, ex vivo images were obtained using magnetic resonance imaging in several animals. Canine spinal tissue from previous intrathecal morphine studies was analyzed in parallel.Results(1) Polyethylene (n = 30) and polyurethane (n = 25) catheters were implanted in the lumbar intrathecal space. (2) Bolus intrathecal morphine produced a dose-dependent (20 to 40 μg/10 μl) increase in thermal escape latencies. (3) Absent infusion, a catheter-associated distortion of the spinal cord and a fibrotic investment were noted along the catheter tract (polyethylene > polyurethane). (4) Intrathecal morphine infusion (25 mg/ml/0.5 μl/h for 14 days) resulted in intrathecal masses (fibroblasts, interspersed collagen, lymphocytes, and macrophages) arising from meninges proximal to the catheter tip in both polyethylene- and polyurethane-catheterized animals. This closely resembles mass histopathology from intrathecal morphine canine studies.ConclusionsContinuous intrathecal infusion of morphine leads to pericatheter masses that morphologically resemble those observed in dogs and humans. This small-animal model may be useful for studying spinal drug toxicology in general and the biology of intrathecal granuloma formation in particular.

Present research was carried out in order to perform the monitoring of development, recognizes the type of tissue and describes histological and cellular changes of the vaginal closure membrane (VCM) throughout pregnancy in Galea spixii. The results showed that at 20 days of gestation (DG), the VCM occludes completely the external vaginal ostium. Microscopically, the VCM presented juxtaposed cells, derived from the stratum germinative of the stratified epithelium of vaginal mucosa at 20 DG and areas with cell clusters with the presence of intercellular spaces in the final stages of pregnancy (40-50 DG). At 0 DG, the stratified epithelium of vaginal mucosa presented all strata but at 20 DG presented stratified epithelium without the stratum corneum and stratum granular and showed communicant junctions by desmosomes and interdigitations in the cell membrane compound the VCM. Gradually from 40 to 50 DG the stratum germinative became barely perceptible. Many cells showed apoptotic nuclei and emerged many intercellular spacing. So, the interdigitations and desmosomes were not observed. Here, it was demonstrated for the first time that the VCM is formed after the extinction of the stratum granular and corneum of the vaginal mucosa epithelium, with the proliferation of the cells of stratum germinative and communication and junction through desmosomes and interdigitations of these cells. At the end of pregnancy, cellular apoptosis; the spread of stratum germinative; and, absence of cellular communication and junction may be responsible for the weakening of the VCM and may assist the process of rupture of this membrane.

A new species of Trichuris (Nematoda: Trichuridae) is described from the capybara, Hydrochoeris hydrochaeris (Rodentia: Caviidae), from two localities of Corrientes Province, based on morphological characteristics and ITS1 and ITS2 of nuclear rDNA region sequences. This species present morphological differences with 28 species of the genus described from North and South American rodents. Also, the new species is molecularly characterized and differentiated from those species from Muridae, Cricetidae and Myocastoridae rodents recorded from North and South America, Europe and Africa. Trichuris cutillasae n. sp. constitutes the ninth record from rodents of Argentina, and the second record for Caviidae. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the specimens of new species are in the same clade, and separated from specimens of T. myocastoris (ITS1and ITS2), T. navonae,T. bainae, Trichuris sp. and T. pardinasi (ITS2). Similarly, analysis of concatenated sequences ITS1 and ITS2 added further evidence that T. cutillasae n. sp. is a different species from those previously analyzed Fil: Eberhardt, María Ayelen Teresita. Leptospirosis is a disease of worldwide distribution that affects man and several animal species. Domestic and wild animals can behave as reservoirs of the agent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in dogs and wild small mammals from rural properties and conservation units of three municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Sera were collected from 192 domestic dogs and 132 small mammals, namely rodents of the Cricetidae and Caviidae families and marsupials of the Didelphidae family. The study used Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) against 23 serovars of Leptospira spp. Overall, 9.90% (19/192) dogs, and 1.51% (2/132) small mammals were seropositive. Leptospira interrogans serovar Australis was the most frequent serovar in dogs and antibodies against L. interrogans serovar Pomona were detected in a dog and a small mammal belonging to the same municipality. We conclude that in the regions studied the frequency of seropositivity in dogs is low, and leptospires do not seem to be circulating in small mammals, yet, further research is necessary to assess the real role that these animals may have for leptospirosis in the studied areas. This is the first serological survey in small mammals, including wild rodents, in the area that encompasses conservation units of great importance to Rio Grande do Sul state. We report for the first time the presence of the Andean-Mountain Cavy, Microcavia niata, in Peru, being a new genus and species for Peruvian wildlife. We base our report on two specimens found in the highlands of Tacna, southwestern Peru.

RESUMO: A leptina, uma citocina produzida pelas células adiposas, é alvo da comunidade científica por acreditarem que ela apresente impacto sobre a reprodução dos animais promovendo a puberdade, foliculogênese e oogênese, ciclo estral e auxiliando na fecundação. A compreensão dos mecanismos que controlam a atividade reprodutiva de preás (Galea spixii) possui papel relevante para a preservação da espécie. Desta forma, o presente trabalho propôs analisar a imunolocalização dos receptores de leptina (Ob-R) no ovário de preás. Coletaram-se os ovários de 20 fêmeas adultas, não prenhes e saudáveis. As amostras foram fixadas em paraformaldeído a 4% em tampão fosfato, incluídas em parafina e seccionadas para a realização de imunohistoquímica (IHC). As secções foram fotomicrografadas e avaliadas quanto à intensidade da reação. Observou-se forte imunorreação no oócito e nas células da teca, moderada nas células do estroma ovariano e nas células luteínicas grandes e fracamente coradas nas células da granulosa, endoteliais, perivasculares e células luteínicas pequenas. Quando comparado a expressão de receptores ao longo do desenvolvimento folicular foi observado que o oócito e as células da teca se mantiveram com expressão na mesma intensidade. Entretanto, as células da granulosa apresentaram forte marcação nos estádios pré-antrais enquanto que nos folículos antrais apresentou fraca intensidade. Concluímos que em ovários de Galea spixii existe a presença de Ob-R nas principais estruturas do ovário sugerindo que este hormônio desempenhe papel fundamental na reprodução desta espécie. ABSTRACT: Leptin, a cytokine produced by adipose cells, is the target of the scientific community for believing that it has an impact on the reproduction of the animals promoting puberty, folliculogenesis and oogenesis, estrous cycle and aiding in fertilization. The understanding of the mechanisms controlling the reproductive activity of Spix’s Yellow-toothed Cavy (Galea spixii) plays a relevant role in the preservation of the species. Thus, the present study proposed to analyze the immunolocalization of leptin receptors (Ob-R) in the ovary of cavies. Ovaries from 20 adult, non-pregnant, healthy females were collected. The samples were fixed in 4% phosphate buffered paraformaldehyde, embedded in paraffin and sectioned for immunohistochemistry. The sections were photomicrographs and intensity of the reaction was measured. Strong immunoreaction was observed in oocyte and theca cells, moderate in ovarian stromal cells and large luteal cells and weak stained in granulosa, endothelial, perivascular and small luteal cells. When compared to receptor expression along follicular development it was observed that the oocyte and the theca cells remained with expression at the same intensity. However, the granulosa cells presented strong stained in the preantral stages, whereas in the antral follicles it presented low intensity. We conclude that in the ovaries of Galea spixii there is the presence of Ob-R in the main structures of the ovary sugesting that this hormone plays a fundamental role in the reproduction of this species.

The chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Amblycera and Ischnocera) of Mexico have been little studied and many publications include isolated records. This paper summarizes current knowledge of chewing lice recorded from Mexico resulting from an exhaustive search of the literature published from 1866 to 2017. We found 342 louse species associated with 206 bird and 28 mammal species. As a result, we provide a checklist of the chewing lice recorded from Mexico, including a host-parasite list and their geographical distribution within the country.

Background. Rodent models that accurately reflect human filovirus infection are needed as early screens for medical countermeasures. Prior work in rodents with the Zaire species of Ebola virus (ZEBOV) primarily used inbred mice and guinea pigs to model disease. However, these inbred species do not show some of the important features of primate ZEBOV infection, most notably, coagulation abnormalities. Methods. Thirty-six outbred guinea pigs were infected with guinea pig–adapted ZEBOV and examined sequentially over an 8-day period to investigate the pathologic events that lead to death. Results. Features of disease in ZEBOV-infected outbred guinea pigs were largely consistent with disease in humans and nonhuman primates and included early infection of macrophages and dendritiform cells, apoptosis of bystander lymphocytes, and increases in levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Most importantly, dysregulation of circulating levels of fibrinogen, protein C activity, and antifibrinolytic proteins and deposition of fibrin in tissues demonstrated both biochemical and microscopic evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation. Conclusions. These findings suggest that the outbred guinea pig model recapitulates ZEBOV infection of primates better than inbred rodent models, is useful for dissecting key events in the pathogenesis of ZEBOV, and is useful for evaluating candidate interventions prior to assessment in primates.

We describe a new caviomorph rodent, Cavia cabrerai, sp. nov. (Caviidae, Caviinae), from the upper levels of Andalhuala Formation (San Fernando Norte locality, Catamarca Province, northwestern Argentina), which represents the oldest fossil record of the genus. The new species differs from extant and extinct species of Cavia by a unique combination of characters: large size, proportionally anteroposteriorly elongated molars, slightly anteroposteriorly compressed prisms, relatively shallow primary lingual flexids, abundant cement in the lingual flexids, and anterolingual widening of the second crests of cheek teeth. A phylogenetic analysis indicates that Cavia cabrerai, sp. nov., is the sister taxon of extant Cavia species and displays dental characters more plesiomorphic than the latter. Some characters of C. cabrerai, sp. nov., namely, compression of prisms and depth of flexids, are morphologically intermediate between the related extinct Caviinae Palaeocavia and the extant species of Cavia. An ash bed dated at 4.72 ± 0.08 Ma that overlies the fossiliferous level of the new material supports the presence of Cavia close to the Miocene-Pliocene boundary. The mammalian masticatory apparatus is a highly plastic region of the skull and thus subjected to singular ontogenetic trajectories. Here we present the first descriptive allometric pattern study of mandible among the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), based on the study of 37 specimens. Allometric changes in shape were analyzed using geometric morphometrics techniques and the pattern of allometry was visualized. A multivariate regression of the shape component on size, estimated by the logarithm of centroid size, appeared as highly significant. Therefore, a major component of shape variation in these mandibles is related to the attainment of adult size (i.e., growth). El aparato masticatorio de los mamíferos es una región altamente plástica del cráneo y, por ello, sujeta a trayec- torias ontogénicas singulares. En este estudio presentamos el primer estudio descriptivo del patrón alométrico de la mandíbula en el capibara ( Hydrochoerus hydrochae- ris ), basado en el estudio de 37 especímenes. Los cambios alométricos en la forma pura fueron analizados median- te técnicas de morfometría geométrica, permitiendo la visualización del patrón de alometría. Una regresión multivariada de la forma pura sobre el tamaño, estima- do por el logaritmo del tamaño del centroide, apareció como altamente significativo. De ello, deducimos que la variación de la forma pura en la mandíbula está rela- cionada con la llegada al tamaño adulto, es decir, con el crecimiento.

The yellow-toothed cavy is a rodent belonging to the Caviidae family that inhabits the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil. We used 20 cavies that had died of natural causes, obtained from the Reproduction Center of Wild Animals (CEMAS) of the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid (UFERSA). The animals were fixed in aqueous solution of 10% formaldehyde and, after 48 hours, they were dissected to visualize plexus. The topographic relations of the lumbosacral plexus were grouped into tables and then they underwent statistical analysis (chi-square test with Yates’ correction). The lumbosacral plexus stemmed from the ventral roots of the last 3 lumbar nerves and the first 3 sacral nerves, corresponding to 65% of the animals under study (L5L6L7S1S2S3). These nerves stemmed from plexus: femoral, obturator, ischiatic, cranial gluteal, caudal gluteal, and pudendal. O preá silvestre é um roedor pertencente à família Caviidae presente na região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil. Foram utilizados 20 preás que vieram a óbito por causas naturais, obtidos no Centro de Multiplicação de Animais Silvestres (CEMAS) da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA). Os animais foram fixados em solução aquosa de formaldeído a 10% e, após 48 h, foram dissecados para visualização do plexo. As relações topográficas do plexo lombossacral foram agrupadas em tabelas e, posteriormente, submetidas a análises estatísticas (teste do qui-quadrado com correção de Yates). O plexo lombossacral originou-se das raízes ventrais dos três últimos nervos lombares e dos três primeiros nervos sacrais, correspondendo a 65% dos animais estudados (L5L6L7S1S2S3). Originam-se do plexo os nervos: femoral, obturatório, isquiático, glúteo cranial, glúteo caudal e pudendo.

Introduction: The rock cavy (Kerodon rupestris) is a crepuscular Caviidae rodent belonging to suborder Hystricomorpha, inhabiting semiarid areas ofthe Brazilian Northeast region. Material and Methods: Previously anesthetized young adult rock cavies were submitted to transcardiac perfusion. The extraocular muscles and components of the eyeball were dissected and measures were taken. Some eyes were embedded in paraffin and sectioned to study the retinal structure. Results: The rock cavy has lateral eyes housed in a well-constituted bony orbit and endowed with well differentiated extrinsic musculature. Descriptive and morphometric anatomical study of the rock cavy eye showed axial diameter mean values of 10.67 ± 0.55 mm and an equatorial diameter of 11.64 ± 0.69 mm. It has a vertical slit pupil and a crystalline lens with a mean axial diameter of 5.4 ± 0.03 mm, which corresponds to about 45% of the eye axial diameter. The posterior nodal distance and the retinal magnification factor were estimated in 6.74 mm and 118 μm/degree, respectively. Conclusion: Anatomical features of the rock cavy eye suggest that it was designed to acquire greater light sensitivity, at the expense of a reduced resolution, compatible with a vision under mesopic conditions, beitting an animal with a pattern of predominantly crepuscular activity.

The red-rumped agouti is a small-sized wild rodent, belonging to the Dasyproctidae family, with great zootechnical potential, and it adapts well to captivity. In order to contribute to the species biology, this study describes the origin of the nerves forming the lumbosacral plexus. Twelve animals (six males and six females) were used, from previous experiments. The animals were fixed in a 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution and eviscerated after 72 hours. Then, the major and minor psoas muscles were retracted, exposing the nerves forming the plexus. Cotton soaked with 20-volume hydrogen peroxide was placed on these nerves, remaining for 12 hours straight for bleaching and subsequent dissection. The topographical relations of the lumbosacral plexus were grouped into tables and arranged in terms of simple percentage. In 7 cases (58.34%), the lumbosacral plexus in the red-rumped agouti stemmed from the ventral roots of the last 4 lumbar nerves and the first 3 sacral nerves (Type I – L4-S3), in 4 animals (33.33%) it stemmed from L5-S3 (Type II), and in 1 case (8.33%) it stemmed from L5-S4 (Type III). The nerves participating of the lumbosacral plexus in the red-rumped agouti were: lateral femoral cutaneous, genitofemoral, femoral, obturator, sciatic, cranial gluteal, caudal gluteal, and pudendal nerve. The origin of the lumbosacral plexus and the spinal nerves making up this plexus in red-rumped agoutis were similar to that described in other rodents, such as rock cavy, lowland paca and spix's yellow-toothed cavy. A cutia é um roedor silvestre, de pequeno porte pertencente à família Dasyproctidae, com grande potencial zootécnico e que se adapta bem ao cativeiro. De forma a contribuir acerca da biologia da espécie, objetivou-se descrever a origem dos nervos que formam o plexo lombossacral. Foram utilizados 12 animais (6 machos e 6 fêmeas), provenientes de experimentos anteriores. Os animais foram fixados em solução aquosa de formaldeído a 10% e após 72 horas, eviscerados. Em seguida os músculos psoas maior e menor foram rebatidos, expondo-se os nervos que formavam o plexo. Sobre estes nervos foi colocado algodão embebido com peróxido de hidrogênio a 20 volumes, permanecendo por 12 horas seguidas para clareamento e consequente dissecação. As relações topográficas do plexo lombossacral agrupadas em tabelas em forma de porcentagem simples. O plexo lombossacral da cutia originou-se em sete casos (58,34%) a partir das raízes ventrais dos quatro últimos nervos lombares e três primeiros nervos sacrais (Tipo I – L4-S3), em quatro animais (33,33%) a partir de L5-S3 (Tipo II) e um caso (8,33%) a partir de L5-S4 (Tipo III).Os nervos que participaram do plexo lombossacral da cutia foram: cutâneo femoral lateral, genitofemoral, femoral, obturatório, isquiático, glúteo cranial, glúteo caudal e nervo pudendo. A origem do plexo lombossacral e os nervos espinhais constituintes deste plexo em cutias foram semelhantes ao descrito em alguns roedores como mocó, paca e preá.

Methods:Eleven-day-old animals (New Zealand [NZ], n = 24 and Elm Hill strains [EH], n = 26) wore either a +2 or -2 diopter (D) lens over one eye and a plano lens over the fellow eye for 5 days; other 10-day-old EH (n = 9) and 7-day-old NZ (n = 9) animals were monocularly form-deprived (FD) for 28 days. Choroidal thickness and axial length were measured using A-scan ultrasonography at baseline and after 1 and 5 days for optical defocus treatments, and at baseline and after 28 days for the FD treatment. Refractive errors were measured by retinoscopy. Choroids of untreated animals were also evaluated using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Results:One day of optical defocus induced bidirectional (optical sign-dependent) choroidal responses in EH animals only (P l 0.01). Similar responses were detected in NZ animals after 5 days (P l 0.01), with concordant spherical equivalent refraction changes (P l 0.01). Compared with NZ animals, EH animals developed minimal myopia with FD after 28 days (-4.58 ± 0.97 vs. -0.69 ± 0.75 D for NZ versus EH, P l 0.001). Yet, EH animals showed paradoxical choroidal thickening, 20 ± 9 vs. -8 ± 8 μm for EH versus NZ, P l 0.001. Untreated EH animals also had significantly thicker choroids than NZ animals (147 ± 19 vs. 132 ± 16 μm, P l 0.05), with well-defined layering. Conclusions:As previously reported in chicks, guinea pigs show strain-related differences in response to myopia-inducing stimuli. The finding of a thicker, multilayered choroid in the strain showing decreased sensitivity to FD is provocative, suggesting a possible protective role of the choroid.

Humans and guinea pigs differ from other mammals by maintaining high progesterone levels in pregnancy all the way through birth. Here we investigated the evolutionary history of this condition and conclude that it evolved independently in the human and the guinea pig lineages. Furthermore we investigated the gene expression during cervical re-modelling and found only a small number of gene regulatory events that seem to be common between humans and guinea pigs., Background and objectives: Cervix remodeling (CRM) is a critical process in preparation for parturition. Early cervix shortening is a powerful clinical predictor of preterm birth, and thus understanding how CRM is regulated is important for the prevention of prematurity. Humans and other primates differ from most other mammals by the maintenance of high levels of systemic progesterone concentrations. Humans have been hypothesized to perform functional progesterone withdrawal (FPW). Guinea pigs are similar to humans in maintaining high-progesterone concentrations through parturition, thus making them a prime model for studying CRM. Here, we analyze the phylogenetic history of FPW and document gene expression in the guinea pig uterine cervix. Methodology: Data on progesterone withdrawal were collected from the literature, and character evolution was analyzed. Uterine cervix samples were collected from non-pregnant, mid-pregnant and late pregnant guinea pigs. RNA was extracted and sequenced. Relative transcript levels were estimated and compared among sample groups. Results: The phylogenetic analysis shows that FPW evolved independently in primates and guinea pigs. The transcriptome data confirms that guinea pigs down-regulate progesterone receptor toward parturition, in contrast to humans. Some of the similarities between human and guinea pig are: down-regulation of estrogen receptor, up-regulation of VCAN and IGFBP4 as well as likely involvement of prostaglandins. Conclusions and implications: (i) FPW in guinea pigs evolved independently from that in primates. (ii) A small set of conserved gene regulatory changes has been detected.

The capybara, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (L.) (Rodentia: Caviidae), is the largest herbivorous rodent on Earth and abundant in the Neotropical region, which can provide a stable food source of dung for dung beetle communities (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae). However, the use of capybara dung by dung beetles is poorly known. Here, we present data on the structure of the dung beetle community attracted to capybara dung and compare with the community attracted to human feces. Dung beetles were captured with pitfall traps baited with fresh capybara dung and human feces in pastures with exotic grass (Brachiaria spp.), patches of Brazilian savanna (Cerrado), and points of degraded riparian vegetation along the Aquidauana river in Anastácio and Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In traps baited with human feces, 13,809 individuals of 31 species were captured, and in those baited with capybara dung 1,027 individuals belonging to 26 species were captured. The average number of individuals and species captured by the traps baited with human feces was greater than for capybara dung in all habitats studied. Composition of the communities attracted to human feces and capybara dung formed distinct groups in all habitats. Despite the smaller number of species and individuals captured in capybara dung when compared with human feces, capybara dung was attractive to dung beetles. In Brazil, the legalization of hunting these rodents has been debated, which would potentially affect the community and consequently the ecological functions performed by dung beetles that use the feces of these animals as a resource. In addition, the knowledge of the communities associated with capybaras may be important in predicting the consequences of future management of their populations.

Purpose To determine if drug-induced peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) signal pathway modulation affects refractive development and myopia in guinea pigs. Methods Pigmented guinea pigs were randomly divided into normal vision (unoccluded) and form deprivation myopia (FDM) groups. Each group received daily peribulbar injections of either a vehicle or (1) PPARα agonist, GW7647, clofibrate, or bezafibrate or (2) PPARα antagonist, GW6471, for 4 weeks. Baseline and posttreatment refraction and ocular biometric parameters were measured. Immunofluorescent staining of PPARα and two of its downstream readouts, cytosolic malic enzyme 1 (ME1) and apolipoproteinA II (apoA-II), was undertaken in selected scleral sections. Western blot analysis determined collagen type I expression levels. Results GW6471 induced a myopic shift in unoccluded eyes, but had no effect on form-deprived eyes. Conversely, GW7647 inhibited FDM progression without altering unoccluded eyes. Bezafibrate and clofibrate had effects on refraction similar to those of GW7647 in unoccluded and form-deprived eyes. GW6471 downregulated collagen type I expression in unoccluded eyes whereas bezafibrate inhibited collagen type I decreases in form-deprived eyes. GW6471 also reduced the density of ME1- and apoA-II-stained cells in unoccluded eyes whereas bezafibrate increased apoA-II-positive cell numbers in form-deprived eyes. Conclusions As GW7647 and GW6471 had opposing effects on myopia development, PPARα signaling modulation may be involved in this condition in guinea pigs. Fibrates are potential candidates for treating myopia since they reduced both FDM and the associated axial elongation. Bezafibrate also inhibited form deprivation-induced decreases in scleral collagen type I expression and the density of apoA-II expressing cells.

Twenty-eight Capillariinae species have been recorded in rodents; 1 of these was reported from a caviomorph rodent, Hydrochoeris hydrochaeris, and placed in the genus Echinocoleus by Moravec (1982). However, both original description and subsequent contributions of Echinocoleus hydrochoeri are poor and incomplete. In this paper, this species is redescribed, and a new geographical distribution is reported. The redescription is based on morphologic and morphometrical features; intestine ends in a cloaca beside ejaculatory duct, caudal bursa composed of 2 large ventrolateral lobes with a fleshy internal part and a membranous external part (they are not united dorsally with a membrane), 1 pair of caudal papillae, terminal part of cylindrical cirrus ornamented with thin and thick spines (and particular pattern distribution), sclerotized spicule in male, and vulvar appendage in female, and 3 bacillary bands (1 ventral and 2 lateral). Generic and specific analyses were performed in order to establish new standards for future studies on the systematic position of Capillariinae species. Objectives The antipsychotic drug thioridazine is active in the murine model of tuberculosis infection, which is predominantly intracellular in nature. Recent clinical reports suggest that thioridazine may play a role in the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis. We studied the tuberculocidal activity of thioridazine in guinea pigs, which develop necrotic lung granulomas histologically resembling their human counterparts. Methods Pharmacokinetic studies were performed in guinea pigs to establish human-equivalent doses of thioridazine. Guinea pigs were aerosol-infected with ∼100 bacilli of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and single-drug treatment was started 4 weeks later with a range of thioridazine doses daily (5 days/week) for up to 4 weeks. Control animals received no treatment or 60 mg/kg isoniazid. Results The human-equivalent dose of thioridazine was determined to be 5 mg/kg with saturable absorption noted above 50 mg/kg. At the start of treatment, the lung bacterial burden was ∼6.2 log10 cfu. Although isoniazid reduced bacillary counts more than 10-fold, thioridazine monotherapy showed limited killing over the range of doses tested, reducing lung bacillary counts by 0.3-0.5 log10 following 1 month of treatment. Thioridazine was tolerated up to 40 mg/kg. Conclusions Thioridazine has limited bactericidal activity against extracellular bacilli within necrotic granulomas. Its contribution to the sterilizing activity of combination regimens against drug-susceptible and drug-resistant tuberculosis remains to be determined.

The rock cavies (Kerodon rupestris) are rodents belonging to family Caviidae, with habitat restricted to northeastern Brazil. Current studies have shown that blood cord has stem and hematopoietic cells both with a high regenerative potential, microscopic studies about the description in rodents and other mammals are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the structural components of the umbilical cord of rock cavies. Rock cavies embryos at different stages of pregnancy were used, three in the first third, five in middle third, and six in the final third of gestation. They were obtained at the Centre for Wild Animals Multiplication of Federal Rural University of Semi-Arid. In rock cavies was observed that the number of vessels involved in the transport of maternal substances was represented by two major arteries, veins and an allantois duct. The umbilical cord was delimited by amniotic epithelium, formed by a layer of squamous cells, connective tissue with characteristic of the mucosal tissue, corresponding to the Wharton jelly (fetal mesenchyme), where elastic fibers were observed and intercellular spaces were arranged in concentric blades. The morphology observed in rock cavies is similar to that described in the literature for other mammals, including man. The rock cavies are well adapted to captivity and are docile, which makes this animal an important model for study within the field of regenerative medicine. The knowledge of the umbilical cord morphology represents a base point for using this animal as a model for culture and cell therapy. Microsc. Res. Hydrochoerinae is a clade of caviomorph rodents broadly distributed in South America, which includes the maximum body size recorded among extant rodent taxa. The most basal forms of this group are an assemblage of small to medium body size extinct taxa with a plesiomorphic dentition, traditionally clustered in the group cardiomyines. One of the oldest known cardiomyine is Procardiomys martinoi (Chasicoan South American Land Mammal Age SALMA; early late Miocene), which was known only from the holotype, a fragmentary palate with the left and right molar series. New mandibular remains from the Arroyo Chasicó Formation (Chasicoan SALMA) are described and identified here as belonging to P. martinoi because they share a unique combination of characters (as well matching in size) with the upper dentition of the holotype. These materials help in critically reviewing the taxonomic identification of the mandibular remains previously assigned to Procardiomys and allow testing the phylogenetic affinities of this taxon within Caviidae. P. martinoi is depicted as one of the most basal forms of Hydrochoerinae, placed basally on the lineage leading to extant capybaras after the split between the common ancestor of Kerodon and Hydrochoerus.
