We study differences in exposure to factor-biased technical change among occupations by providing the first measures of capital-embodied technical change (CETC) and of the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor at the occupational level. We document sizable occupational heterogeneity in both measures, but quantitatively, it is the heterogeneity in factor substitutability that fuels workers’ exposure to CETC. In a general equilibrium model of worker sorting across occupations, CETC accounts for almost all of the observed labor reallocation in the US between 1984 and 2015. Absent occupational heterogeneity in factor substitutability, CETC accounts for only 17 percent of it (JEL I26, J16, J24, J31, O33)

Objectives: The course of progressive liver damage after achieving sustained virological response (SVR) with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) remains undetermined. We aimed to determine risk factors associated with the development of liver-related events (LREs) after SVR, focusing on the utility of non-invasive markers. Methods: An observational, retrospective study that included patients with advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV), who achieved SVR with DAAs between 2014 and 2017. Patients were followed-up until December 2020. LREs were defined as the development of portal hypertension decompensation and the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Serological markers of fibrosis were calculated before treatment and one and two years after SVR. Results: The study included 321 patients, with a median follow-up of 48 months. LREs occurred in 13.7% of patients (10% portal hypertension decompensation and 3.7% HCC). Child–Pugh [HR 4.13 (CI 95% 1.74; 9.81)], baseline FIB-4 [HR 1.12 (CI 95% 1.03; 1.21)], FIB-4 one year post-SVR [HR 1.31 (CI 95% 1.15; 1.48)] and FIB-4 two years post-SVR [HR 1.42 (CI 95% 1.23; 1.64)] were associated with portal hypertension decompensation. Older age, genotype 3, diabetes mellitus and FIB-4 before and after SVR were associated with the development of HCC. FIB-4 cut-off values one and two years post-SVR to predict portal hypertension decompensation were 2.03 and 2.21, respectively, and to predict HCC were 2.42 and 2.70, respectively. Conclusions: HCV patients with ACLD remain at risk of developing liver complications after having achieved SVR. FIB-4 evaluation before and after SVR may help to predict this risk, selecting patients who will benefit from surveillance.

This prospective single-center study was designed to assess the clinical utility of the FilmArray® blood culture identification (BCID) panel for improving the diagnostic accuracy in neonatal sepsis. Results obtained using the FilmArray® BCID panel were correlated with results of blood culture in all consecutive neonates with suspicion of early-onset (EOS) and late-onset sepsis (LOS) attended in our service over a two-year period. A total of 102 blood cultures from 92 neonates were included, 69 (67.5%) in cases of EOS and 33 (32.3%) in LOS. The FilmArray® BCID panel was performed in negative culture bottles at a median of 10 h of blood culture incubation (IQR 8–20), without differences by the type of sepsis. The FilmArray® BCID panel showed a 66.7% sensitivity, 100% specificity, 100% positive predictive value, and 95.7% negative predictive value. There were four false-negative cases, three of which were Streptococcus epidermidis in neonates with LOS, and there was one case of Granulicatella adiacens in one neonate with EOS. We conclude that the use of the FilmArray® BCID panel in negative blood cultures from neonates with clinical suspicion of sepsis is useful in decision-making of starting or early withdrawal of empirical antimicrobials because of the high specificity and negative predictive values of this assay.

Primary gastric melanoma is an exceptional tumour with less than 20 cases described in the literature, as its origin is not entirely clear as the presence of melanocytes in the stomach has not been demonstrated. Symptomatology is non-specific, which prevents its early detection, and it is diagnosed in late stages. We present the case of a patient who was admitted to our hospital for vomiting in coffee grounds with analytical and haemodynamic repercussions. Urgent gastroscopy revealed a gastric lesion suspicious for malignancy, which was histologically confirmed as gastric melanoma. The therapeutic approach to these tumours is complex and they have a very poor prognosis.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) one-step diagnosis improves recovery in patients with active infection. However, patients with previous anti-HCV+ may be excluded. We aimed to identify and retrieve non-referred or lost-to-follow-up HCV-infected patients. All anti-HCV+ patients seen in our hospital between 2013 and 2018 were included. In the first phase, we identified anti-HCV+ patients who were not referred to the Gastroenterology Unit (GU) or lost-to-follow-up. In the second phase, recovered patients were invited for a one-step visit for liver evaluation. A total of 1330 anti-HCV+ patients were included: 21.7% had not been referred to GU, and 23.1% were lost-to-follow-up. In the second phase, 49.6% of patients were contacted, and 92.8% attended a medical consultation: 62.7% had active infection, 92.2% were treated, and 86.5% achieved SVR (ITT). We concluded that screening microbiological data and referring unidentified patients with active HCV infection directly to specialists is an effective tool in achieving HCV microelimination.

Bacteriophage-encoded lysins are increasingly reported as alternatives to combat Acinetobacter baumannii infections, for which limited therapeutic options are available. Some lysins, such as LysMK34, have a C-terminal amphipathic helix allowing them to penetrate the otherwise-impermeable outer membrane barrier. Another approach to kill Gram-negative pathogens with lysins relies on fusion of a peptide with outer membrane- permeabilizing properties to the lysin. In this work, we aimed to leverage the intrinsic antibacterial activity of LysMK34 by fusing the peptide cecropin A to its N terminus via a linker of three Ala-Gly repeats, resulting in engineered LysMK34 (eLysMK34). The engineered lysin has an improved antibacterial activity compared to that of the parental lysin, LysMK34, in terms of MICs (0.45 to 1.2 μM), killing rate, and killing extent. eLysMK34 has a ≥2-foldincreased activity against stationary-phase cells, and the bactericidal effect becomes less dependent on the intracellular osmotic pressure. In particular, colistin-resistant strains become highly susceptible to eLysMK34, and enhanced antibacterial activity is observed in complement- deactivated human serum. A new subcutaneous formulation of the infliximab biosimilar CT-P13 has recently been developed for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), providing response rates similar to intravenous treatment. The use of this new formulation was requested, in an effort to limit patient attendance at intravenous infusion centers and to maintain biological treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this observational, retrospective and descriptive study was to assess CT-P13 efficacy and safety after switching from intravenous to a subcutaneous formulation in patients with IBD receiving maintenance therapy. This article shows preliminary results after six months of follow-up.

Factor-biased technical change is at the core of the US labor market dynamics in the post-war era. Concurrently, workers' occupations have become a key dimension for the anatomy of labor reallocation and inequality. This paper furthers our understanding of the heterogeneity in factor-biased technical change across occupations by providing the first direct measures of capital-embodied technical change (CETC) as well as of the elasticity of substitution between labor and capital at the occupational level. We nd that CETC and capital-labor ratios vary substantially across occupations and over time, but it is the heterogeneity in the elasticity of substitution that fuels differences in workers' exposure to technical change and ultimately sets the direction of the labor reallocation triggered by CETC. We evaluate the impact of CETC in a general equilibrium model of endogenous sorting of workers across occupations of different CETC and substitutability between capital and labor. CETC explains 87% of labor reallocation in the US between 1984 and 2015. In an economy with a common elasticity of substitution between capital and labor, measured differences in CETC can only explain 14.5% of the observed labor reallocation.

Background Neonatal sepsis is a condition with high mortality and morbidity that contributes to high rates of antibiotic therapy at birth. In addition, very low birth weight newborns (VLBWN) are particularly vulnerable. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) seems to be an early and effective marker that could help a better selection of patients to be treated. This study aimed to evaluate the use of antibiotics in the first 72 hours of life in VLBW infants before and after using IL-6 as an infection marker. Also, we wanted to analyze the differences in morbidity and mortality during admission and other factors associated with the decision to start antibiotic treatment. Methods We conducted a cohort retrospective study. We included VLBWN born in our hospital or admitted before 72 hours of life in two two-year periods (2007-2008 and 2011-2012). Results Antibiotics use during the first 72 hours of life was analyzed as the primary variable, which was reduced by 20% on the second period (p = 0.002). Regarding the analysis of secondary variables, we found no significant differences in mortality during hospital admission and the incidence of nosocomial sepsis, enterocolitis, or invasive fungal infection. The multivariate analysis indicated extreme prematurity and the study group as the most strongly related factors to the start of antibiotic therapy. Conclusions IL-6 was a useful marker of infection to reduce the use of antibiotic therapy in VLBW infants without increasing mortality.

[Purpose] Stenting as a bridge to surgery (SBTS) can transform an emergency surgery (ES) into an elective surgery in patients with symptomatic left-sided malignant colonic obstruction. Concerns have been raised regarding short-term morbidity and long-term oncologic outcomes, with contrasting results reported in the literature. Our main aim is to evaluate not only long-term oncologic outcomes but also short-term postoperative outcomes of stented patients who underwent elective surgery compared to those who had ES., [Methods] From January 2006 to May 2012, we retrospectively identified patients with confirmed left-sided colorectal cancer obstruction. This was done in two centers of reference of colorectal diseases in southern Spain with patients who were treated with curative intent either with ES or SBTS. The short- and long-term results were compared between both groups., [Results] There were 71 patients in the stenting group and 66 in the emergency surgery group, with similar demographic data. Initial stoma creation rates were lower in the SBTS group (16.9% vs. 54.5%, p, [Conclusions] The use of SBTS reduces ostomy rates in patients with obstructive colon malignancies. Long-term survival results are similar. Patients in the SBTS group with stage III AJCC status showed a higher 5-year recurrence-free survival rate than those in the ES group.

INTRODUCTION The primary goal of this study was to compare gastrointestinal symptom reduction in patients on bismuth-containing quadruple eradication therapy supplemented with Lactobacillus reuteri strains (DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 6475) or placebo. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was randomized, double-blind, parallel-arm, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Patients received first-line an eradication regimen based on bismuth subcitrate potassium, metronidazole, tetracycline hydrochloride (three-in-one capsules), and omeprazole 40 mg twice a day for ten days, plus a probiotic or placebo tablet for 30 days. During follow-up gastrointestinal symptoms were assessed using an evaluation scale (GSRS), and adverse events were collected at 0, 14, 28, and 56 days. RESULTS A total of 80 patients were included from February 2018 to May 2019 at a single site. Eradication therapy was effective for 85% of patients, with no differences between treatment arms. In the group receiving the probiotic, abdominal pain decreased in 42% of patients, compared with 19% in the control group (OR: 0.27; CI, 0.13-0.58; p < 0.001), and abdominal distension decreased in 25% versus 17% in the control group (OR: 0.24; IC, 0.19-0.84; p < 0.001); Conclusions: Treatment with L. reuteri only reduced abdominal pain and distension. Further studies are needed to establish the role of probiotics as adjuvant therapy in H. pylori eradication.

Technology is the driver of labor allocation across sectors and occupations. Is the impact of technological change on developing countries similar to its impact on developed countries? Will developing countries follow the same development path that developed economies have taken? Our approach focuses on how technology shifts and reshapes the tasks workers perform on the job, and views occupations as the natural observable stand-in for these tasks. We first take stock of our knowledge on how technological change reallocates labor. We then construct a new measure of occupational task contents for each country and present new evidence on countries' task intensity. In the cross section, developed countries use non-routine analytical and interpersonal tasks more intensively than developing countries, but less intensively use routine-cognitive and routine-manual tasks. Both the occupational employment share and the occupational task contents of a country matter for these relationships. In the time dimension, countries with high initial task intensities experienced a decline in these intensities, suggesting convergence in task intensities across countries. Our results show that occupational task contents ought to be measured for each country for proper analysis. More broadly, we should not simply extrapolate what we know about the impact of technology on the labor market in developed countries to developing countries. [Introduction] patients with advanced chronic liver disease (CLD) may be at an increased risk of a severe course due to cirrhosis-associated immune dysfunction. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of CLD in COVID-19 patients and to analyze the course of the infection, compared with patients with non-liver disease., [Materials and methods] this was a retrospective single center study of all patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test from March 23rd to April 30th, 2020. Clinical and biochemical data of patients with and without CLD and COVID-19 were collected from the medical records., [Result] four hundred and forty-seven patients with a SARS-CoV-2 positive PCR were included, 6.3 % had CLD; 69.7 % of patients with CLD were male, with a median age of 65.5 years and active alcohol consumption and smoking; 75 % had non-advanced liver fibrosis and most had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The hospital admission rate (92.9 % vs 47.7 %, p < 0.001), concomitant comorbidities (diabetes 38.5 vs 16.5 %, p = 0.011; obesity 30.8 vs 8.5 %, p = 0.033; cancer 23.1 vs 5 %, p = 0.027; and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) 19.2 vs 9 %, p = 0.009) and concomitant antibiotics treatment (19.3 vs 5 %, p = 0.018) were higher in patients with CLD than in those without CLD. In-patient hospital mortality rates were similar in both groups (30.8 vs 19.6 %, p = 0.289). The presence of CLD was not associated with mortality (OR = 1.06; 95 % CI = 0.35-3.18; p = 0.924). Immunosuppressed patients are susceptible to infections by opportunistic agents such as Leishmania that could cause visceral leishmaniasis with gastrointestinal involvement in up to 10 % of cases. We report a 41-year-old man with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection stage C3 with CD4 lymphocytes 81/mm3, 4,070 leukocytes (47.2 % lymphocytes, 0.0 % eosinophils, rest of differential normal) treated with antiretroviral therapy (dolutegravir/abacavir/lamivudine) with good adherence. He also reported mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis type-1, hepatocutaneous porphyria, and a 7-year history of recurrent visceral leishmaniasis treated with liposomal amphotericin B as secondary prophylaxis. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy indicated for chronic diarrhea and anemia performed 5 years ago displayed antral erythema, mild nodular appearance in the duodenal mucosa, and normal colonic mucosa. Gastric, duodenal, and colonic biopsies revealed Leishmania spp despite treatment with liposomal amphotericin B. A video capsule endoscopy (VCE) was now indicated for persistent diarrhea. Enteropathy with atrophic and patchy, marked edema of the villus, and whitish nodularity with a “river bedrock” appearance ([Fig. 1 – 3]) in the duodenum and jejunum were identified ([Video 1]). Further gastric and duodenal biopsies showed an accumulation of macrophages in the lamina propria of the mucosa with intracytoplasmatic Leishmania spp ([Fig. 4]). Treatment with meglumine antimoniate was initiated owing to previous failure with liposomal amphotericin B, without response.

Primary follicular lymphomas (FL) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are very rare and constitute < 4 % of all non-Hodgkin's lymphomas at this location. We report our experience with primary FL of the GI tract.

Background and study aims: Endoscopy plays an essential role in managing patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), as it allows us to visualize and assess the severity of the disease. As such assessments are not always objective, different scores have been devised to standardize the findings. The main aim of this study was to assess the interobserver variability between the Mayo Endoscopy Score (MES), Ulcerative Colitis Endoscopy Index of Severity (UCEIS) and Ulcerative Colitis Colonoscopy Index of Severity (UCCIS) analyzing the severity of the endoscopic lesions in patients with ulcerative colitis. Patients and methods: This was a single-cohort observational study in which a colonoscopy was carried out on patients with UC, as normal clinical practice, and a video was recorded. The results from the video were classified according to the MES, UCEIS and UCCIS by three endoscopic specialists independently, and they were compared to each other. The Mayo Endoscopy Score (MES) was used to assess the clinical situation of the patient. The therapeutic impact was analyzed after colonoscopy was carried out. Results: Sixty-seven patients were included in the study. The average age was 51 (SD ± 16.7) and the average MES was 3.07 (SD ± 2.54). The weighted Kappa index between endoscopists A and B for the MES was 0.8; between A and C 0.52; and between B and C 0.49. The intraclass correlation coefficient for UCEIS was 0.92 among the three endoscopists (CI 95 %: 0.83–0.96) and 0.96 for UCCIS among the three endoscopists (CI 95 % 0.94–0.97). A change in treatment for 34.3 % of the patients was implemented on seeing the results of the colonoscopy. Conclusions: There was an adequate, but not perfect, correlation between the different endoscopists for MES, UCEIS, UCCIS. This was higher with the last two scores. Thus, there is still some subjectivity to be minimized through special training, on assessing the seriousness of the endoscopic lesions in patients with UC.

Introducción y objetivos: la pandemia por el SARS-CoV-2 ha obligado a un cambio sustancial en la atención a los pacien- tes con patologías digestivas, en especial a los pacientes con enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal (EII), por estar tra- tados con fármacos inmunomoduladores. En este sentido, algunas guías nacionales e internacionales han indicado las normas a tener en cuenta. No obstante, pocos trabajos han evaluado cómo han afrontado los pacientes esta infección. Por ello, hemos realizado este estudio con el objetivo de conocer cómo ha afectado la pandemia por SARS-CoV-2 a nuestros pacientes con EII. Material y métodos: se realizó una encuesta on-line entre los 295 miembros de la Asociación de Enfermos de Crohn y Colitis Ulcerosa (ACCU) que constaba de 19 preguntas. Resultados: participaron 168 pacientes de la ACCU, de los cuales un 58 % eran mujeres, el 63,7 % tenía una EC y el 53 % recibía tratamiento biológico. Un 5 % fueron infecta- dos por el SARS-CoV-2, todos ellos varones. La principal preocupación de los pacientes era el miedo a adquirir la infección (80,9 %). Más del 90 % continuó con su tratamien- to inmunosupresor y biológico. La mitad de los pacientes teletrabajaron durante el periodo de pandemia. Conclusiones: la perspectiva de los pacientes es fundamen- tal para conseguir un adecuado manejo y evolución de la enfermedad. Son necesarios más trabajos que evalúen el impacto que situaciones excepcionales como la pandemia COVID-19 puede ocasionar sobre los pacientes con EII para mejorar la adherencia y el control de la enfermedad.

The incidence of biliary stent migration is low, and most cases are asymptomatic, with elimination of the piece by the feces. We report the case of a patient with an ileal perforation secondary to a plastic biliary stent migration. Intestinal perforation due to stent migration is an extremely rare complication, being mostly located at duodenum. Patients with previous surgeries, diverticulosis or abdominal wall hernias have a higher risk of complications in case of prosthetic migration, that is the reason why they require special attention and follow-up.

It is clear that the origin of this behavior has a multi-causal nature. However, two of the most important factors are personality and peer group. Currently, the most accepted personality model is the Five-Factor Model (MCF; John, Naumann & Soto, 2008). Agreeableness and conscientiousness are the dimensions that play the most marked role in the development of antisocial behaviors (Jones et al, 2011). On the other hand, probably the most important social variable is the peer group (Pratt et al., 2010). According to the Social Enhancement theory (Vitaro et al, 2015), anti-normative behaviors are amplified when a person with antisocial dispositions is in environments that favor this conduct. A study has been carried out with 465 participants aged 13-17 years old who were assessed on the different personality dimensions (JS-NEO), the antisocial behavior of the peer group (DPS-UJI) and their own antisocial behavior (SENA antisocial behavior scale). In general, the results obtained are consistent with the reviewed literature. The personality dimensions extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness play the most important role. It has also been found that associating with peers who engage in anti-normative behaviors can trigger the development of these behaviors. Finally, two synergistic effects are observed: between conscientiousness and the anti-normative peer group and between sex and the peer group. Los comportamientos antinormativos en la adolescencia suponen una importante fuente de preocupación en nuestra sociedad. Es evidente que el origen de esta conducta es de carácter multicausal. No obstante, dos de los factores más importantes son la personalidad y el grupo de iguales. Actualmente, el modelo de personalidad más aceptado es el Modelo de Cinco Factores (MCF; John, Naumann & Soto, 2008). La amabilidad y la responsabilidad son las dimensiones que juegan un papel más marcado en el desarrollo de las conductas antisociales (Jones et al., 2011). Por otra parte, la variable social probablemente más importante es el grupo de iguales (Pratt et al., 2010). De acuerdo con el modelo de Influencia de Iguales (Vitaro et al., 2015), los comportamientos antinormativos se ven amplificados cuando una persona con disposiciones antisociales se encuentra en ambientes que favorecen estas conductas. Se ha llevado a cabo un estudio con 465 participantes con edades comprendidas entre los 13 y 17 años a los que se les ha evaluado las distintas dimensiones de personalidad (JS-NEO), las conductas antisociales del grupo de iguales (DPS-UJI) y la propia conducta antisocial (Escala conducta antisocial de SENA). En general, los resultados obtenidos son consistentes con la literatura revisada. Las dimensiones de personalidad extraversión, amabilidad y responsabilidad son las que juegan un papel más importante. También se encuentra que asociarse con un grupo de iguales con conductas antinormativas puede desencadenar en el surgimiento de estos comportamientos. Por último, se observan dos efectos sinérgicos: entre la responsabilidad y el grupo de iguales antinormativos y entre el sexo y el grupo de iguales. Así, estos resultados pueden ser útiles para el desarrollo de nuevos programas de intervención para prevenir y disminuir las conductas antisociales en adolescentes. We report the case of a 67-year-old male who was referred to our hospital due to severe abdominal pain and fever. His past medical history included a total gastrectomy surgery for stomach cancer. Abdominal examination showed intense pain on deep palpation in the epigastric region. Laboratory test revealed elevated C-reactive protein (235 mg/l) and amylase (1,789 U/l). Computerized tomography reported a pancreatic collection with the presence of air bubbles inside and areas of necrotic pancreatic parenchyma.

Preterm infants have a higher risk of showing visuospatial memory impairment, the function that allows to encode and remember visual and spatial information. It has been studied in late childhood in preterm children. Studies on visuospatial memory throughout the first 2 years of life are still scarce. Behavior, temperament, and overall cognition could be altered in preterm children affecting memory performance. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to evaluate short-term and visuospatial working memory performance in a preterm sample followed longitudinally at 12, 15, 18, and 22 months (N = 15), and compare their performance with that of full-term children (N = 65). The secondary aim was to analyze the course of mnesic development in preterm infants and relate their memory performance to other cognitive abilities and behavioral tendencies. Assessment included previously published tasks and an experimental paradigm. Results showed that preterm children scored lower than full-term children on visuospatial short-term and working memory at 12 and 22 months of age, although these results varied depending on the memory test used. Preterm children's memory results showed that these skills improve in this population between the first and second year of life. Finally, memory performance was directly associated with the level of cognitive development and the presence of proactive behaviors, while being inversely correlated with the presence of disruptive behaviors and a difficult temperamental style. These preliminary findings suggest that it is possible to detect visuospatial memory difficulties in the preterm population before the age of two.

espanolIntroduccion: cuando no se dispone de leche materna propia, la leche materna donada es la mejor alternativa para asegurar los requerimientos nutricionales de los recien nacidos prematuros o enfermos. Objetivos: conocer el contenido de macronutrientes de la leche materna donada y como varian estos en los distintos periodos de la lactancia. Material y metodos: se analizo de forma retrospectiva la composicion nutricional de 822,423 litros de leche materna donada, procedentes de 160 donantes del banco de leche materna de un hospital de tercer nivel entre el 1 de febrero de 2017 y el 31 de diciembre de 2019. Resultados: el contenido en lipidos y carbohidratos se mantiene constante a lo largo de la lactancia; sin embargo, el contenido proteico disminuye inicialmente para luego volver a aumentar a partir del segundo ano de lactancia. Conclusiones: los bancos de leche materna deben conocer las variaciones del contenido en macronutrientes de la leche donada para optimizar la nutricion del recien nacido prematuro. EnglishIntroduction: when own mother´s breast milk is unavailable, donor human milk is the best option to guarantee the nutritional requirements of preterm or ill newborns. Objectives: to analyze the macronutrient composition of donor breast milk and its evolution over lactation periods. Material and methods: we retrospectively analyzed the nutritional composition of 822.423 L of donor breast milk from 160 donors at the human milk bank of a third-level hospital between February 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019. Results: lipid and carbohydrate composition remains constant throughout lactation. However, protein content decreases initially to increase again starting in the second year of lactation. Conclusions: donor human milk banks should be aware of the variations in macronutrient composition donor human milk shows in order to optimize nutrition for preterm newborns.

Forecasts are a central component of policymaking; the Federal Reserve's forecasts are published in a document called the Greenbook. Previous studies of the Greenbook's inflation forecasts have found them to be rationalizable but asymmetric if considering particular subperiods, for example, before and after the Volcker appointment. In these papers, forecasts are analyzed in isolation, assuming policymakers value them independently. We analyze the Greenbook forecasts in a framework in which the forecast errors for different variables are allowed to interact. We find that allowing the losses to interact makes the unemployment forecasts virtually symmetric, the output forecasts symmetric prior to the Volcker appointment, and the inflation forecasts symmetric after the onset of the Great Moderation.

We document novel facts about the relationship between aggregate growth and firm dynamics using a large set of countries. We argue that firm employment patterns are not necessarily informative about cross‐country differences in aggregate growth because they are induced by changes in the productivity of a firm relative to others. In contrast, aggregate growth is linked to average firm‐level productivity growth and firm age. We formalize this intuition through a tractable model of endogenous aggregate growth and firm dynamics where firms realize positive returns to investment with some probability. We find that cross‐country disparities in this probability can account for two‐thirds of the variation in aggregate growth. (JEL D21, D22, E23, O4)

Around 27,000 people were killed in the province of Asturias during the Spanish Civil War, with several thousands killed after the war ended. There are currently over 2,000 known mass burial locations throughout Spain, but many more are unknown. Geophysics is a useful tool employed to help in the active attempts to document and improve knowledge about victims from this conflict. This paper details a non-invasive study of the Cementerio de El Salvador, in the city of Oviedo, Northern Spain. Part of the cemetery contains a known mass burial with approximately 1,300 individuals from the Spanish Civil War and post-war repression eras. Multi-frequency near-surface geophysical techniques were undertaken, after permission, to enhance knowledge about which, if any, techniques should be used to detect, delineate and analyse such mass graves. Multi-frequency (250 MHz and 500 MHz) ground-penetrating radar surveys were acquired together with 2D and 3D Electrical Resistivity Tomography datasets. The results have established the limits of the mass grave and improve the knowledge of the internal mass grave structure. The paper also shows the importance of considering the climatic conditions during data acquisition. This has important implications for the successful detection of recent historical mass burials using near-surface geophysics.
