Cu(I) complexes and clusters are the largest class of compounds of relevant photochemical and photophysical interest based on a relatively abundant metal element. Interestingly, Nature has given an essential role to copper compounds in some biological systems, relying on their kinetic lability and versatile coordination environment. Some basic properties of Cu(I) and Cu(II) such as their coordination geometries and electronic levels are compared, pointing out the limited significance of Cu(II) compounds (d 9 configuration) in terms of photophysical properties. Well-established synthetic protocols are available to build up a variety of molecular and supramolecular architectures (e.g. catenanes, rotaxanes, knots, helices, dendrimers, cages, grids, racks, etc.) containing Cu(I)-based centers and exhibiting photo- and electroluminescence as well as light-induced intercomponent processes. By far the largest class of copper complexes investigated to date is that of Cu(I)-bisphenanthrolines ([Cu(NN)2]+) and recent progress in the rationalization of their metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) absorption and luminescence properties are critically reviewed, pointing out the criteria by which it is now possible to successfully design highly emissive [Cu(NN)2]+ compounds, a rather elusive goal for a long time. To this end the development of spectroscopic techniques such as light-initiated time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy (LITR-XAS) and femtosecond transient absorption have been rather fruitful since they have allowed us to firmly ground the indirect proofs of the molecular rearrangements following light absorption that had accumulated in the past 20 years. A substantial breakthrough towards highly emissive Cu(I) coordination compounds is constituted by heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes containing both N- and P-coordinating ligands ([Cu(NN)(PP)]+) which may exhibit luminescence quantum yields close to 30% in deaerated CH2Cl2 solution and have been successfully employed as active materials in OLED and LEC optoelectronic devices. Also copper clusters may exhibit luminescence bands of halide-to-metal charge transfer (XMCT) and/or cluster centered (CC) character and they are briefly reviewed along with miscellaneous Cu(I) compounds that recently appeared in the literature, which show luminescence bands ranging from the blue to the red spectral region.

Background: Recently several calcium silicate flowable sealers have been introduced as endodontic materials for the root canal. This clinical study tested the use of a new premixed calcium silicate bioceramic sealer in association with the Thermafil warm carrier-based technique (TF). Epoxy-resin-based sealer with the warm carrier-based technique was the control group. Methodology: Healthy consecutive patients (n = 85) requiring 94 root canal treatments were enrolled in this study and assigned to one filling group (Ceraseal-TF n = 47, AH Plus-TF n = 47) in accordance with operator training and best clinical practice. Periapical X-rays were taken preoperatively, after root canal filling and after 6, 12 and 24 months. Two evaluators blindly assessed the periapical index (PAI) and sealer extrusion in the groups (k = 0.90). Healing rate and survival rate were also evaluated. Chi-square tests was used to analyze significant differences between the groups. Multilevel analysis was performed to evaluate the factors associated with healing status. Results: A total of 89 root canal treatments in 82 patients were analyzed at the end-line (24 months). The total drop-out was 3.6% (3 patients; 5 teeth). A total of 91.1% of healed teeth (PAI 1-2) was observed in Ceraseal-TF, with 88.6% in AH Plus-TF. No significant difference was observed on healing outcome and survival among the two filling groups (p > 0.05). Apical extrusion of the sealers occurred in 17 cases (19.0%). Of these, 6 occurred in Ceraseal-TF (13.3%) and 11 in AH Plus-TF (25.0%). Three Ceraseal extrusions were radiographically undetectable after 24 months. All the AH Plus extrusions did not change during the evaluation time. Conclusions: The combined use of the carrier-based technique and premixed CaSi-based bioceramic sealer showed clinical results comparable with carrier-based technique and epoxy-resin-based sealer. The radiographical disappearance of apically extruded Ceraseal is a possible event in the first 24 months.

Gioddu, also known as “Miciuratu”, “Mezzoraddu” or “Latte ischidu” (literally meaning acidulous milk), is the sole variety of traditional Italian fermented milk. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the microbiota and the mycobiota occurring in artisan Gioddu sampled from three Sardinian producers by combining the results of viable counting on selective culture media and high-throughput sequencing. Physico-chemical parameters were also measured. The overall low pH values (3.80–4.22) recorded in the analyzed Gioddu samples attested the strong acidifying activity carried out by lactic acid bacteria during fermentation. Viable counts revealed the presence of presumptive lactococci, presumptive lactobacilli and non-Saccharomyces yeasts. A complex (kefir-like) microbiota of bacteria and yeasts was unveiled through sequencing. In more detail, Lactobacillus delbrueckii was found to dominate in Gioddu together with Streptococcus thermophilus, thus suggesting the establishment of a yogurt-like protocooperation. Unexpectedly, in all the three analyzed batches from two out of the three producers Lactobacillus kefiri was also detected, thus representing an absolute novelty, which suggests the presence of bioactive compounds (e.g. exopolysaccharides) similar to those characterizing milk kefir beverage. Mycobiota population, studied for the very first time in Gioddu, revealed a more complex composition, with Kluyveromyces marxianus, Galactomyces candidum and Geotrichum galactomyces constituting the core species. Further research is needed to disclose the eventual occurence in Gioddu of probiotic cultures and bioactive compounds (e.g. exopolysaccharides, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides and antimicrobial compounds) with potential health-benefits for the consumers.

Diet can affect the diversity and composition of gut microbiota. Usage of antibiotics in food production and in human or veterinary medicine has resulted in the emergence of commensal antibiotic resistant bacteria in the human gut. The incidence of erythromycin-resistant lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the feces of healthy vegans, ovo-lacto vegetarians and omnivores was analyzed. Overall, 155 LAB were isolated and characterized for their phenotypic and genotypic resistance to erythromycin. The isolates belonged to 11 different species within the Enterococcus and Streptococcus genera. Enterococcus faecium was the dominant species in isolates from all the dietary categories. Only 97 out of 155 isolates were resistant to erythromycin after Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) determination; among them, 19 isolates (7 from vegans, 4 from ovo-lacto vegetarians and 8 from omnivores) carried the erm(B) gene. The copresence of erm(B) and erm(A) genes was only observed in Enterococcus avium from omnivores. Moreover, the transferability of erythromycin resistance genes using multidrug-resistant (MDR) cultures selected from the three groups was assessed, and four out of six isolates were able to transfer the erm(B) gene. Overall, isolates obtained from the omnivore samples showed resistance to a greater number of antibiotics and carried more tested antibiotic resistance genes compared to the isolates from ovo-lacto vegetarians and vegans. In conclusion, our results show that diet does not significantly affect the occurrence of erythromycin-resistant bacteria and that commensal strains may act as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance (AR) genes and as a source of antibiotic resistance spreading.
