Background: Delirium is thought to be common across various settings of care; however, still little research has been conducted in rehabilitation. Aim: We investigated the prevalence of delirium, its features and motor subtypes in older patients admitted to rehabilitation facilities during the three editions of the “Delirium Day project”. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in which 1237 older patients (age ≥ 65 years old) admitted to 50 Italian rehabilitation wards during the three editions of the “Delirium Day project” (2015 to 2017) were included. Delirium was evaluated through the 4AT and its motor subtype with the Delirium Motor Subtype Scale. Results: Delirium was detected in 226 patients (18%), and the most recurrent motor subtype was mixed (37%), followed by hypoactive (26%), hyperactive (21%) and non-motor one (16%). In a multivariate Poisson regression model with robust variance, factors associated with delirium were: disability in basic (PR 1.48, 95%CI: 1.17–1.9, p value 0.001) and instrumental activities of daily living (PR 1.58, 95%CI: 1.08–2.32, p value 0.018), dementia (PR 2.10, 95%CI: 1.62–2.73, p value < 0.0001), typical antipsychotics (PR 1.47, 95%CI: 1.10–1.95, p value 0.008), antidepressants other than selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (PR 1.3, 95%CI: 1.02–1.66, p value 0.035), and physical restraints (PR 2.37, 95%CI: 1.68–3.36, p value < 0.0001). Conclusion: This multicenter study reports that 2 out 10 patients admitted to rehabilitations had delirium on the index day. Mixed delirium was the most prevalent subtype. Delirium was associated with unmodifiable (dementia, disability) and modifiable (physical restraints, medications) factors. Identification of these factors should prompt specific interventions aimed to prevent or mitigate delirium.

Gender inequity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medicine (STEM) fields, including parasitology, continues to limit the participation of women in scientific leadership and development. Here we highlight the aims and activities of Herminthology, an initiative promoting the work of women in parasitology, alongside the current status quo of men and women scientists in the discipline.

Nonconventional clinical presentations of diseases are common in older adults. Even dramatic events, such as foreign body (FB) inhalation, can occur in a subtle and non-specific manner. Pill aspiration is a rare yet overlooked cause of airway injury. It accounts for approximately 7% of all FB aspirations. In contrast, oral dysphagia and polypharmacology, mainly administrated in solid oral dosage forms (SDOF), like tablets and pills, are common conditions in older adults. Herein, we present a case of SDOF aspiration in a 78-year-old man. FB inhalation developed with general clinical deterioration and neurological impairment (delirium) rather than overt respiratory symptoms. Bronchoscopy provided remarkable images of this unexpected finding. Caregivers and healthcare workers must be aware of the risk of SDOF aspiration and adopt proper safety measures. Early recognition and bronchoscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes can be lifesaving in such cases.

A influência de Schelling sobre o pensamento de Tillich já está razoavelmente bem mapeada, mas pouca atenção damos à influência de Plotino e do neoplatonismo sobre esses autores. Enuncia-se, portanto, a necessidade de rastrear nos textos de Tillich, as referências a Plotino, Porfírio, Proclo, Jâmblico e outros neoplatônicos para se compreender semelhanças e diferenças, tais como: a) o reconhecimento dos limites racionais do discurso teológico que levaram os neoplatônicos a inaugurar uma tradição apofática (teologia negativa) absorvida por autores da mística cristã (Pseudo-Dionísio, Mestre Eckhart, Boehme); b) o recurso a imagens e metáforas; c) a estrutura do pensamento plotiniano em Tillich e Schelling, manifesto na percepção triádica da realidade e diádica do pensamento; d) além de equivalências semânticas, especialmente as noções de “Deus-além-de-Deus” como “Fundamento e abismo” (Tillich) e Uno/Nada (Plotino). A partir de pesquisa bibliográfica em obras de especialistas nesses autores, o texto enuncia caminhos para uma futura pesquisa de maior fôlego capaz de nos ajudar a compreender a importância mediadora de Schelling como ponte entre o neoplatonismo e Tillich, o que tornaria esse autor bem mais neoplatônico do que ele mesmo admitiria.

COVID-19 pandemic forced countries to adopt strategies aimed at responding to the health emergency by containing contagion. Lockdowns have ensured the achievement of this goal but imposed substantial restrictions to the freedom of movement and resulted in social isolation for a large share of vulnerable people. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and associated emergency restriction measures on the quality of life, lifestyle habits, and psychosocial status in older adults.

Background and objectives: Depression is highly prevalent in older adults, especially in those with dementia. Trazodone, an antidepressant, has shown to be effective in older patients with moderate anxiolytic and hypnotic activity; and a common off-label use is rising for managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The aim of the study is to comparatively assess the clinical profiles of older patients treated with trazodone or other antidepressants. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved adults aged ≥ 60 years at risk of or affected with COVID-19 enrolled in the GeroCovid Observational study from acute wards, geriatric and dementia-specific outpatient clinics, as well as long-term care facilities (LTCF). Participants were grouped according to the use of trazodone, other antidepressants, or no antidepressant use. Results: Of the 3396 study participants (mean age 80.6 ± 9.1 years; 57.1% females), 10.8% used trazodone and 8.5% others antidepressants. Individuals treated with trazodone were older, more functionally dependent, and had a higher prevalence of dementia and BPSD than those using other antidepressants or no antidepressant use. Logistic regression analyses found that the presence of BPSD was associated with trazodone use (odds ratio (OR) 28.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 18-44.7 for the outcome trazodone vs no antidepressants use, among participants without depression; OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.05-4.49 for the outcome trazodone vs no antidepressants use, among participants with depression). A cluster analysis of trazodone use identified three clusters: cluster 1 included mainly women, living at home with assistance, multimorbidity, dementia, BPSD, and depression; cluster 2 included mainly institutionalized women, with disabilities, depression, and dementia; cluster 3 included mostly men, often living at home unassisted, with better mobility performance, fewer chronic diseases, dementia, BPSD, and depression. Discussion: The use of trazodone was highly prevalent in functionally dependent and comorbid older adults admitted to LTCF or living at home. Clinical conditions associated with its prescription included depression as well as BPSD.

Previous studies found a lower prevalence of sarcopenia in older adults engaged in regular aerobic training (AT) or with greater adherence to a Mediterranean (MED) diet. However, the effect of their combination on sarcopenia indices is unknown. The present study tested the association between AT plus a MED diet and the presence of sarcopenia and its defining elements in a sample of Italian older adults enrolled in the Longevity Check-up 7+ (Lookup 7+) project. Analyses were conducted in participants 65+ years, with a body mass index of at least 18.5 kg/m2, engaged in regular AT, and without missing information for the variables of interest. MED diet adherence was evaluated via a modified version of the MEDI-LITE score and categorized as low, moderate, or high. The presence of sarcopenia was established by handgrip strength and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) values below sex-specific cut-points recommended by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2. Data from 491 older adults were analyzed for the present study. The mean age was 72.7 ± 5.7 years, and 185 (37.7%) were women. MED diet adherence was low in 59 (12.0%) participants, moderate in 283 (57.6%), and high in 149 (30.3%). Sarcopenia was identified in 26 participants (5.3%), with no differences across MED diet adherence groups. The results of binary logistic regression showed no significant associations between AT plus adherence to a MED diet and dynapenia, low ASM, or sarcopenia. The findings of the present study indicate that the combination of AT with a MED diet is not associated with a lower probability of sarcopenia or its defining elements in Italian older adults enrolled in Lookup 7+. Further research is warranted to establish whether exercise frequency, volume, intensity, and length of engagement in AT impact the association between MED diet and sarcopenia.

The engineering design of hydraulic infrastructures in either urban or rural environments requires flow hydrograph scenarios to be tested in numerical models. Whilst peak flow discharge is calculated according to a return period analysis of historical data, the definition of the corresponding hydrograph duration and shape is not unique. The first one is typically considered either equal to the concentration time of the catchment or dependent on rainfall event intensity and duration. The shape of the hydrograph is then defined as a rectangle (e.g., constant flow discharge) or other simple shapes (e.g., triangle) according to empirical rules. In this work, we propose the definition of an average hydrograph shape based on the stochastic analysis of the Compound Poisson Process, which is usually considered as a proxy model for hydrological data in several applications. Once the peak flow discharge value is derived by means of the Peak Over Threshold analysis and a baseflow value is set, we calculate the duration of both the raising and the falling limbs of the hydrograph based on the concept of mean first passage time across thresholds for non-Markovian processes. As this technique considers the ensemble of the infinite possible stochastic trajectories reaching the threshold, it then returns a more comprehensive description of the possible mean shape of the hydrograph. Such a shape can also be approximated by using relationships already available in the literature (e.g., the Yevdjevich function). In definitive, the proposed approach provides more reliable results when the hydraulic processes being modelled (e.g., flow erosion) require that not only the peak but also the shape and the hydrograph duration are important for verification and design purposes.

O artigo pressupõe que muitas canções produzidas por bandas de rock brasileiro no início dos anos 80 nos ajudam a compreender o desencanto político e existencial de muitos jovens da época. O texto recupera informações sobre esse momento histórico da cultura brasileira, delimitado como marco temporal (anos 80 até meados dos anos 90), focalizando na produção poético-literária de Renato Russo, compositor, letrista e vocalista da banda Legião Urbana. O artigo sustenta que Renato Russo oferecia em suas letras um verdadeiro retrato de uma fatia da juventude de classe-média da época, principalmente jovens nascidos e/ou criados na Capital Federal (Brasília) que enfrentaram a situação contraditória de serem filhos de funcionários-públicos e estatais em pleno vigor da ditadura militar. O clima cultural de desencanto, burocratização, pressões e conflitos familiares foi muito bem percebido pelo letrista que, através das canções da banda expressava essas angústias e anseios de liberdade. O texto busca pistas para compreender que o grande sucesso de Renato Russo junto aos jovens da época, deve-se ao fato de ter conseguido oferecer em suas letras o desencanto político e existencial dessa geração.

The study used an epidemiological and pharmacological description of child and adolescent psychiatric emergencies (CAPEs), during which psychotropic medications are frequently administered as off-label therapies.We retrospectively describe CAPE in 190 patients (mean age, 14.7 years) referring in the emergency department of a single tertiary center, from June 2016 to June 2018, focusing on off-label administration rate, most of all in emergency setting.An intrinsic fragility was observed in this population, where 28.4% of patients present a history of self-harm, 24.7% a concomitant neurodevelopmental disorder, and 17.3% a history of substance abuse. Psychomotor agitation was the most frequent referral reason, and it represents an unspecified clinical presentation of several conditions, while self-harm showed a stronger association with depressive disorders (55.2%).Globally, 811 medications were administered both as baseline therapy (67.8% of off-label rate) and/or in the emergency setting, where the off-label rate raised to 78.3%. Benzodiazepines had the highest rate of off-label use (98.2% as baseline therapy, 92.9% in acute context). Nevertheless, in 83.5% cases of acute administrations, a singular oral benzodiazepine (mostly lorazepam) guaranteed psychomotor agitation resolution, with a lower rate of adverse effects in contrast with atypical antipsychotics.Off-label drug use in CAPEs is a recurrent clinical practice. An international agreement about off-label drugs is crucial to obtain standard long-term pharmacoepidemiological, safety, and efficacy data. Pharmacological pediatric trials and international guidelines are also required to regulate pharmacological treatments of CAPEs, most of all in emergency settings.

Multisystem derangements, encompassing metabolic, musculoskeletal and stress-response systems, occur during aging and are associated with the development of physical frailty and sarcopenia. These modular changes are relevant sources for the identification of biomarkers for the two conditions. Here, we provide an up-to-date overview on existing biomarkers of physical frailty and sarcopenia and discuss emerging approaches for biomarker discovery.Inflammatory, metabolic and hematologic markers are shared between physical frailty and sarcopenia. Gut microbial derivatives and damage-associated molecular patterns transferred via extracellular vesicles have been indicated as possible gut-muscle axis regulators and candidate markers of physical frailty and sarcopenia.Mediators of metabolic, musculoskeletal and stress-response system dysregulation are shared by physical frailty and sarcopenia and indicate the existence of common pathophysiological pathways. Multiplatform biomarker analyses have been proposed as an innovating approach for tracking the multifaceted and dynamic nature of physical frailty and sarcopenia. Upon validation, the identified biomarkers may support diagnostic makeup and tracking of the two conditions in both research and clinical settings.

Background The dynamic nature of sarcopenia, including possible transitions between its different stages, is currently unknown. We aimed to explore 12 year transitions through sarcopenia stages and identify factors associated with different sarcopenia trajectories in older adults. Methods We included 3219 participants (aged ≥60 years, 35.8% men, 96.4% community‐dwelling) from the SNAC‐K study. No sarcopenia (normal muscle strength and mass), probable sarcopenia (low muscle strength and normal muscle mass), and sarcopenia (low muscle strength and mass) were assessed at baseline and up to 12 years. Such conditions were defined based on a modified version of the EWGSOP2 criteria with muscle strength evaluated through handgrip or chair stand tests, and muscle mass from calf circumference. We estimated 1, 5, and 10 year transition probabilities through continuous‐time multistage Markov modelling. Sociodemographic, lifestyle, and medical factors associated with the likelihood of different transitions were evaluated with proportional intensity models, and the associations' strength was expressed as hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results Participants with no sarcopenia had 10‐year probabilities of 17.1% and 5.1% to develop probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia, and a 40.4% chance of not transitioning. Those with probable sarcopenia had similar 5‐year chances of developing sarcopenia (10.3%) and reverting to no sarcopenia (10.7%). Participants with sarcopenia had chances to revert to probable sarcopenia ranging from 8.2% (at 5 years) to 4.7% (at 10 years), and a 70.9% chance of dying after 10 years. Older age (HR = 1.11, 95% CI: 1.07–1.14), male sex (HR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.16–2.91), current smoking (HR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.16–2.91), and higher number of chronic diseases (HR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.00–1.14) were associated with sarcopenia development, while higher levels of physical activity (HR = 1.84, 95% CI: 1.19–2.84) and cognitive function (HR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.05–1.31 per each 1‐point increase in the Mini‐Mental State Examination) were associated with subsequent higher reversion rates from probable sarcopenia to no sarcopenia (P

Functional genomic strategies have become fundamental for annotating gene function and regulatory networks. Here, we combined functional genomics with proteomics by quantifying protein abundances in a genome-scale knockout library in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, using data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry. We find that global protein expression is driven by a complex interplay of (1) general biological properties, including translation rate, protein turnover, the formation of protein complexes, growth rate, and genome architecture, followed by (2) functional properties, such as the connectivity of a protein in genetic, metabolic, and physical interaction networks. Moreover, we show that functional proteomics complements current gene annotation strategies through the assessment of proteome profile similarity, protein covariation, and reverse proteome profiling. Thus, our study reveals principles that govern protein expression and provides a genome-spanning resource for functional annotation.

The present study was conducted to test the association between adherence to specific exercise modalities and sarcopenia severity in Italian older adults. Data were collected as part of the ongoing Longevity Check-Up 7+ (Lookup 7+) project. Lookup 7+ began in June 2015 and has since been conducted in unconventional settings (e.g., exhibitions, malls, social events) throughout Italy. In the present study, we used data on adults 65 years and older. Sarcopenia was identified according to the simultaneous presence of dynapenia and low appendicular muscle mass. Muscle strength was measured by isometric handgrip and sit-to-stand (STS) testing. Sarcopenia was categorized as severe if participants reported difficulty or inability to walk 400 m. Engagement in running and/or swimming (RS) or strength training with or without stretching (SS) was used to define exercise modalities. Analyses were conducted in 3289 participants (mean age: 72.7 ± 5.7 years; 1814 women). The results of the binary regression showed negative associations between RS and the presence of STS-based sarcopenia in women, and between RS and STS-based severe sarcopenia in men. Collectively, these findings indicate that RS is negatively associated with the presence of sarcopenia in large sample of relatively unselected Italian older adults.

Supplementary Figure 1 from Echinomycin, a Small-Molecule Inhibitor of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 DNA-Binding Activity

The identification of small molecules that inhibit the sequence-specific binding of transcription factors to DNA is an attractive approach for regulation of gene expression. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is a transcription factor that controls genes involved in glycolysis, angiogenesis, migration, and invasion, all of which are important for tumor progression and metastasis. To identify inhibitors of HIF-1 DNA-binding activity, we expressed truncated HIF-1α and HIF-1β proteins containing the basic-helix-loop-helix and PAS domains. Expressed recombinant HIF-1α and HIF-1β proteins induced a specific DNA-binding activity to a double-stranded oligonucleotide containing a canonical hypoxia-responsive element (HRE). One hundred twenty-eight compounds previously identified in a HIF-1–targeted cell-based high-throughput screen of the National Cancer Institute 140,000 small-molecule library were tested in a 96-well plate ELISA for inhibition of HIF-1 DNA-binding activity. One of the most potent compounds identified, echinomycin (NSC-13502), a small-molecule known to bind DNA in a sequence-specific fashion, was further investigated. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay experiments showed that NSC-13502 inhibited binding of HIF-1α and HIF-1β proteins to a HRE sequence but not binding of the corresponding proteins to activator protein-1 (AP-1) or nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) consensus sequences. Interestingly, chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments showed that NSC-13502 specifically inhibited binding of HIF-1 to the HRE sequence contained in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promoter but not binding of AP-1 or NF-κB to promoter regions of corresponding target genes. Accordingly, NSC-13502 inhibited hypoxic induction of luciferase in U251-HRE cells and VEGF mRNA expression in U251 cells. Our results indicate that it is possible to identify small molecules that inhibit HIF-1 DNA binding to endogenous promoters.

Background—Patients affected by Long COVID often report shorter times spent doing physical activity (PA) after COVID-19. The aim of the present study was to evaluate potential associations between PA levels and parameters of physical function in a cohort of COVID-19 survivors with post-acute symptoms, with a particular focus on individuals aged 65 and older. Materials and methods—PA levels before and after COVID-19 were assessed in a sample of patients that had recovered from COVID-19 and were admitted to a post-acute outpatient service at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS (Rome, Italy). Participation in PA was operationalized as the engagement in leisure-time PA for at least 150 min per week in the last 3 months. Self-rated health and measures of physical performance and muscle strength were assessed. Results—Mean age of 1846 participants was 55.2 ± 14.4 years and 47% were women. Before COVID-19, inactivity was detected in 47% of the whole study population; only 28% maintained pre-COVID-19 PA engagement. Inactivity was more frequent in women. The stopping of physical activity was associated with increased BMI and CRP levels, lower vitamin D levels and a higher prevalence of post-COVID-19 fatigue, dyspnea, arthralgia, and myalgia. Active participants had higher handgrip strength and performed better on both the six-minute walking test (6MWT) and at the one-minute sit-to-stand test (1MSTST). In particular, at the 6MWT, participants 65 and older that were still active after COVID-19 walked 32 m more than sedentary peers. Moreover, the distance covered was 28 m more than those who were active only before COVID-19 (p = 0.05). Formerly active subjects performed similarly at the 6MWT to inactive participants. PA was associated with better self-rated health. Conclusions—Our findings reveal that inactivity is frequent in the post-acute COVID-19 phase. Stopping physical activity after COVID-19 results in measures of performance that are comparable to those who were never active. Relevant differences in the distance covered at the 6MWT were found between older active subjects and their sedentary peers.

Background: The present study was conducted to explore the association between protein intake across the main meals and hypertension (HTN)-related parameters in community-dwelling Brazilian older adults. Methods: Brazilian community-dwelling older adults were recruited in a senior center. Dietary habits were assessed through 24 h recall. Protein intake was classified as high and low according to median and recommended dietary allowance values. Absolute and body weight (BW)–adjusted protein consumption levels were quantified and analyzed according to ingestion across the main meals. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured using an oscilometric monitor. Participants were categorized as hypertensive according to physician diagnosis or the detection of high SBP and/or DBP values. Results: One hundred ninety-seven older adults were enrolled in the present study. Protein intake at lunch was independently and negatively associated with SBP. Furthermore, a lower prevalence of HTN (diagnosed by a physician) was observed in participants with higher intakes of protein. These results remained significant after adjustment for many covariates. However, significance was lost when kilocalories and micronutrients were included in the model. Conclusions: Findings of the present study indicate that protein intake at lunch was independently and negatively associated with systolic BP in community-dwelling older adults.

Alternate bars are bedforms recognizable in straight or weakly curved channels as a result of riverbed instability. The length and height of alternate bars scale with the river width and the water depth, respectively. During low water stages, alternate bars become exposed and can be colonized by riparian vegetation. The effects of established plants on the morphodynamics of alternate bars have been poorly investigated. In this work, we focus on the effects induced by rigid vegetation on the dynamics and morphology of previously developed alternate bars in a straight channel by means of flume experiments. We investigate three different spatial densities of plants to reproduce scenarios of vegetation establishment. The results illustrate that vegetation alters both the altimetric and planimetric characteristics of bar patterns. In particular, as compared to bare-bed bars, vegetated bars have a higher wave amplitude and scour, and this effect becomes stronger with plant density. Moreover, they exhibit decreasing wavenumbers according to vegetation density. A comparison with previous fundamental work for the planimetric instability of straight channels with bare-bed alternate bars, suggests that the established vegetated bars may promote the transition to river meandering.

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a heterogeneous extracranial tumor occurring in childhood. A distinctive feature of NB tumors is their neuroendocrine ability to secrete catecholamines, which in turn, via β-adrenergic receptors ligation, may affect different signaling pathways in tumor microenvironment (TME). It was previously demonstrated that specific antagonism of β3-adrenergic receptor (β3-AR) on NB tumor cells affected tumor growth and progression. Here, in a murine syngeneic model of NB, we aimed to investigate whether the β3-AR modulation influenced the host immune system response against tumor. Results demonstrated that β3-AR antagonism lead to an immune response reactivation, partially dependent on the PD-1/PD-L1 signaling axis involvement. Indeed, β3-AR blockade on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) dampened their ability to secrete IFN-γ, which in turn reduced the PD-L1 expression, caused by TILs infiltration, on NB tumor cells. Further investigations, through a genomic analysis on NB patients, showed that high ADRB3 gene expression correlates with worse clinical outcome compared to the low expression group, and that ADRB3 gene expression affects different immune-related pathways. Overall, results indicate that β3-AR in NB TME is able to modulate the interaction between tumor and host immune system, and that its antagonism hits multiple pro-tumoral signaling pathways.

Background Cardiovascular disease still represents the leading cause of death worldwide. Management of risk factors remains crucial; despite this, hypercholesterolemia, which is one of the most important modifiable cardiovascular risk factor, is still high prevalent in general population. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia and hypercholesterolemia awareness in a very large population. Methods More than 65 000 users completed the online, self-administered survey. It was structured like a ‘journey’ where each stage corresponded to a cardiovascular risk factor: blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, diet, physical exercise, smoke and blood sugar. At the end, the user received a final evaluation of his health status. Results The mean age was 52.5 years (SD 13.9, range 18–98), with 35 402 (53.7%) men. About 56% of all participants believed to have normal cholesterol values, when only 40% of them really showed values Conclusions Dyslipidemia is very prevalent and half of the people with high cholesterol is not aware of having high values.

Fasciolosis caused by the liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica is one of the most important neglected parasitic diseases of humans and animals. The ability of the parasites to infect and multiply in their intermediate snail hosts, and their adaptation to a wide variety of mammalian definitive hosts contribute to their high transmissibility and distribution. Within the mammalian host, the trauma caused by the immature flukes burrowing through the liver parenchyma is associated with most of the pathogenesis. Similarly, the feeding activity and the physical presence of large flukes in the bile ducts can lead to anaemia, inflammation, obstruction and cholangitis. The high frequency of non-synonymous polymorphisms found in Fasciola spp. genes allows for adaptation and invasion of a broad range of hosts. This is also facilitated by parasite's excretory-secretory (ES) molecules that mediate physiological changes that allows their establishment within the host. ES contains cathepsin peptidases that aid parasite invasion by degrading collagen and fibronectin. In the bile ducts, cathepsin-L is critical to haemoglobin digestion during feeding activities. Other molecules (peroxiredoxin, cathepsin-L and Kunitz-type inhibitor) stimulate a strong immune response polarised towards a Treg/Th2 phenotype that favours fluke's survival. Helminth defence molecule, fatty acid binding proteins, Fasciola-specific glycans and miRNAs modulate host pro-inflammatory responses, while antioxidant scavenger enzymes work in an orchestrated way to deter host oxidant-mediated damage. Combining these strategies Fasciola spp. survive for decades within their mammalian host, where they reproduce and spread to become one of the most widespread zoonotic worm parasites in the world.

Construiu-se ao longo das últimas décadas um conflito teórico-político interno às Ciências da Religião no Brasil. De um lado, estão as abordagens próximas à filosofia, à teologia e à fenomenologia, onde autores como Otto, Tillich e Eliade são referências. De outro, as abordagens em perspectiva social científica, quando autores como Durkheim, Weber e Bourdieu constituem o parâmetro. Esta polarização, ao passo que, acirra os ânimos, ao mesmo tempo constiui um panorama pouco auspicioso para a consolidação da área. Fluem, de ambos os lados, acusações de “criptoteologia” e de “reducionismo sociológico”. A tendência é a de um encastelamento disciplinar e ideológico que não possibilita nem horizontes dialogais e nem a construção identitária das Ciências da Religião no contexto das demais humanidades. Uma possibilidade de superação de tal polarização consiste no entendimento da disciplina como composta por dois momentos complementares, um sistemático e outro histórico. Trata-se de uma compreensão que surge nos inícios da Ciência da Religião europeia e que pode lançar luzes no atual debate brasileiro. Sustentando tal concepção, uma atitude empática ante o fenômeno religioso continua sendo necessária por parte dos pesquisadores.

The present study was conducted to test the association between protein intake and blood pressure, glucose levels, and blood cholesterol in a large sample of Italian older adults. Longevity Check-up 7+ (Lookup 7+) is an ongoing project that started in June 2015. The project is conducted in unconventional settings (e.g., exhibitions, malls, health promotion campaigns) across Italy with the aim of fostering adoption of healthy lifestyles in the general population. For the present study, participants were eligible if they were 65+ years and provided written informed consent. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and blood glucose and cholesterol levels were assessed. Protein intake was estimated using a 12-item food frequency questionnaire. Three-thousand four-hundred and four older adults were included in the study. The results of the linear regression showed an inverse association between protein intake (as a continuous variable) and DBP, and a positive correlation with blood cholesterol levels. The findings of the present study indicate that a high intake of protein was negatively associated with DBP and positively associated with total blood cholesterol levels in a large cohort of Italian older adults, after adjustment for numerous covariates.
