The proportion of older people within the general population is expanding due to the decline of birth rate and the increase of life expectancy. Increasing elderly populations, which is retaining its teeth longer, leads to oral health problems, for example, root caries. The main etiological factor for the initiation and development of root caries is the appearance of cariogenic biofilm. The acid-producing and acid-tolerant bacteria and oral yeast, such as Candida albicans are the major contributors in root caries formation. A new generation of adhesives is developed with several modifications for the prevention of dental caries by incorporating antimicrobial components. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect of adhesive containing calcium salt of acidic monomers on the biofilm formation of oral Candida related to root caries. In the experiments, the flat-bottom surfaces of 96-well plate were painted with an adhesive containing calcium salts of 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitic acid (CMET) and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen calcium phosphate (MDCP) (Bio-Coat, CA, Sun Medical, Japan). Then they were LED light-cured and coated with sterile saliva at 37 °C for 60 min. The biofilm formation was made by adding of Candida albicans (ATCC 10238 and two clinical strains) suspensions (107 colony forming unit/mL) and incubated at 37°C for 24 h. The amount of vital biofilm was determined by WST-8 Microbial Cell Counting Kit (Dojindo Molecular Technologies, USA). All experiments were done in triplicate and repeated three times. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test. The results clearly showed that adhesive could significantly inhibit biofilm formation of all tested Candida compared with a control. This suppressive effect was not different among the strains of Candida. The percentages of vital biofilm reduction were 25% to 40%. The ability of this adhesive to suppress biofilm of oral yeast may be its antimicrobial property of acidic monomer or the effect of calcium ion within the adhesive, which can alter Candida cell morphology, and influence their structures or process of biofilm formation. In conclusion, an adhesive containing calcium salts of acidic monomers could significantly inhibit biofilm formation of C. albicans. This adhesive could be effectively applied to exposed root surfaces to prevent or inhibit the progression of root caries. Further studies are necessary to clarify the effect on multispecies biofilm, on long-term activity, and in vivo conditions.

Our primary objective was to perform a meta-analysis and meta-regression to evaluate the effects of diets supplemented with calcium salts of palm fatty acids (CSPF) compared with nonfat supplemented control diets (CON) on nutrient digestibility and production responses of lactating dairy cows. Our secondary objective was to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate whether experimental design affects production responses to supplemental CSPF. The data set was formed from 33 peer-reviewed publications with CSPF supplemented at ≤3% diet dry matter. We analyzed the interaction between experimental design (continuous vs. change-over) and treatments (CON vs. CSPF) to evaluate whether experimental design affects responses to CSPF (Meta.1). Regardless of experimental design, we evaluated the effects of CSPF compared with CON on nutrient digestibility and production responses of lactating dairy cows by meta-analysis (Meta.2) and meta-regression (Meta.3) approaches. In Meta.1, there was no interaction between treatments and experimental design for any variable. In Meta.2, compared with CON, CSPF reduced dry matter intake [DMI, 0.56 ± 0.21 kg/d (±SE)] and milk protein content (0.05 ± 0.02 g/100 g), increased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility (1.60 ± 0.57 percentage units), the yields of milk (1.53 ± 0.56 kg/d), milk fat (0.04 ± 0.02 kg/d), and 3.5% fat corrected milk (FCM, 1.28 ± 0.60 kg/d), and improved feed efficiency [energy corrected milk (ECM)/DMI, 0.08 kg/kg ± 0.03]. There was no effect of treatment for milk protein yield, milk fat content, body weight, body weight change, or body condition score. Compared with CON, CSPF reduced the yield of de novo milk fatty acids (FA) and increased the yields of mixed and preformed milk FA. In Meta.3, we observed that each 1-percentage-unit increase of CSPF in diet dry matter reduced DMI, increased NDF digestibility, tended to increase FA digestibility, increased the yields of milk, milk fat, and 3.5% FCM, reduced the content of milk protein, reduced the yield of de novo milk FA, and increased the yields of mixed and preformed milk FA. In conclusion, our results indicate no reason for the restrictive use of change-over designs in CSPF supplementation studies or meta-analysis. Feeding CSPF increased NDF digestibility, tended to increase FA digestibility, and increased the yields of milk, milk fat, and 3.5% FCM. Additionally, CSPF increased milk fat yield by increasing the yields of mixed and preformed milk FA.

In this article, calcium salts were added into the hydrofluoric acid-sulfuric acid (HF-H2SO4) leaching system, and their effects on the extraction of potassium from phosphorus-potassium associated mineral (mineral deposits containing Ca5(PO4)3F (fluorapatite) and KAlSi3O8 (potassium feldspar)) were investigated. KAlSi3O8 was converted into water-soluble potassium fertilizers, and important factors affecting the extraction, including dosages of H2SO4, types and dosages of calcium salts were studied. The results showed that the maximum extraction of 75.3 wt.% was obtained with H2SO4 (70 wt.%) dosage of 5 mL. When the reaction was added with 0.15 g CaSO4, the extraction rate of K of 95 wt.% was achieved, which was an increase by 19.7 wt.% compared with that without calcium salts. Moreover, the Eh-pH diagrams for K-Si-(P)-(F)-(Ca)-H2O systems were plotted and applied to analyze the mechanism of potassium extraction in the HF-H2SO4 reaction system. The analysis demonstrated that with the presence of F-, the formation of fluoro-complexes enlarged the stable regions of soluble phosphorus (KPF6) and silicon (K2SiF6). However, when calcium salts were added, such region decreased with the increase of [Ca2 +]; and such trends suggested that [K+] could be enhanced by adding [Ca2 +] during the leaching process.

The objective: to evaluate the international practice of using calcium salts when weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass after cardiac surgery in adult patients.Design: a multiple-choice survey about the current practice of calcium salts use when weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass based on the SurveyMonkey platform.Participants: cardiac surgical hospitals around the world.Estimation and main results. Totally 112 emails were sent to Russian and foreign centers inviting them to participate in the survey. 100 centers from 32 countries replied to this request. Generally, the majority of centers (88%) administer calcium salts during surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, and in 71 (71%) centers out of 100, calcium salts are used to improve hemodynamics. Among 88 centers that use calcium salts during surgery, 66% (58/88) of respondents use calcium chloride, 22% (19/88) use calcium gluconate, and 12% (11/88) use both drugs. Most centers (55 (77%) out of 71) use doses of 5 to 15 mg/kg as a bolus or infusion for 1 min.Conclusion: Our survey shows that the majority of cardiac surgery centers use calcium in adult cardiac surgery patients especially during weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass. There is variability in the type of drug, dose, and route of administration.

This article belongs to the Section Animal Nutrition., Increasing the levels of n-3 fatty acids (FA) in dairy products is an important goal in terms of enhancing the nutritional value of these foods for the consumer. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effects of linseed and algae oil supplements in ovine isoenergetic diets on healthy milk fatty acid composition, mainly n-3. Seventy-two Churra dairy ewes were divided and randomly assigned to four experimental treatments for 6 weeks. The treatments consisted of a TMR (40:60 forage:concentrate ratio) that varied according to the inclusion of different types of fat (23 g/100 g TMR): hydrogenated palm oil (control), linseed oil (LO), calcium soap of linseed oil (CaS-LO) and marine algae oil (AO). The most effective lipid supplement to increase n-3 FA in milk was AO. 22:6 n-3 and total n-3 PUFA content increased from 0.02 and 0.60% (control) to 2.63 and 3.53% (AO), respectively. All diets supplemented with n-3 FA diminished the content of saturated FA in milk and its atherogenic index, while the levels of trans-11 18:1 and cis-9 trans-11 18:2 significantly increased. Spore germination plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of Clostridium perfringens-associated food poisoning. Germination is initiated when bacterial spores sense various stimuli, including chemicals and enzymes. A previous study showed that dipicolinic acid (DPA) chelated with calcium (Ca-DPA) significantly stimulated spore germination in C. perfringens. However, whether Ca2+ or DPA alone can induce germination is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the possible roles of Ca2+ and other divalent cations present in the spore core, such as Mn2+ and Mg2+, in C. perfringens spore germination. Our study demonstrated that (i) Ca-DPA, but not DPA alone, induced C. perfringens spore germination, suggesting that Ca2+ might play a signaling role; (ii) all tested calcium salts induced spore germination, indicating that Ca2+ is critical for germination; (iii) the spore-specific divalent cations Mn2+ and Mg2+, but not Zn2+, induced spore germination, suggesting that spore core-specific divalent cations are involved in C. perfringens spore germination; and (iv) endogenous Ca2+ and Mg2+ are not required for induction of C. perfringens spore germination, whereas exogenous and partly endogenous Mn2+ are required. Collectively, our results suggest that exogenous spore core-specific divalent cation signals are more important than endogenous signals for the induction of spore germination.

Changes in the formulation of pigments and paint binders and the presence of additives used in the history of painting can complicate the interpretation of analytical data and may influence the characterization of the materials used in artworks. The limitations of the common analytical tools used to identify potential paint components including metallic driers, pigments, and the inorganic substrates of lake colors may also make analysis more difficult. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy is a common non-destructive technique used to collect inorganic elemental information from artworks. Advancements in XRF technology now permit the gathering of data from multi-layered paint systems and scanning technology can help characterize pigments across the entire surface of an artwork. These tools require an even greater understanding of the potential materials in an artwork to avoid misinterpretation of the data. The authors tested XRF’s ability to characterize lead, manganese, and cobalt driers. The presence of metallic driers could have an impact on the interpretation of the inorganic components in paint films. Lake pigment substrates often contain aluminum, tin, and calcium salts. The detection of these ions was also studied. Finally, the XRF detection of aluminum in lapis lazuli samples was assessed. These three groups of materials were also mixed with driers and/or other pigments to determine whether the presence of additional metal ions inhibited the detection of the characteristic elements. The authors used a Bruker ArtTax Micro XRF and a handheld Bruker Tracer III-SD XRF unit with and without a vacuum or helium purge for these experiments.

The effect of calcium salts (calcium nitrate and calcium chloride) and Gibberellic acid on quality attributes and consumer’s acceptability of Langra mangoes during storage was examined. The fruits were treated with Ca(NO3)2 at the concentration of 1, 2 and 3 per cent, CaCl2 at the concentration of 1, 2 and 3 per cent and GA3 at the concentration of 50, 100 and 150 ppm. Water treated fruits were taken as control. Data were recorded in respect of TSS, reducing sugars and total sugars under influence of these treatments. All treatments were found effective in maintaining the higher level of these quality attributes of fruits during entire course of the experiment. At end of trial, Ca(NO3)2 at 2% was proved as the best treatment in respect of TSS, reducing sugars and total sugars and was able to maintain the level of these up to 24.32%, 9.00% and 20.05% respectively.

Scheelite coating was deposited on SiC fiber tows from various liquid-phase precursors followed by heat treatments between 900 °C and 1100 °C in different atmospheres. The tensile strength was fully retained for the coated fibers treated at 900 °C in vacuum. Subsequent heat treatment at 1100 °C in Ar had little effect on the fiber strength, which is explained by the excepted good thermal stability between the scheelite coating and SiC fiber. However, larger strength degradation and poor spool ability of coated fibers prepared in Ar/air were found. Assisted oxidation of SiC fiber by calcium salts is suggested to be responsible for the much larger strength degradation of fibers prepared in Ar/air.

The effect of calcium salts (calcium nitrate and calcium chloride) and Gibberellic acid on physiological loss in weight (PLW %), spoilage loss (%), economic life (days) and intensity of rotting of fruits during storage of Langra mangoes was studied. The fruits were treated with Ca(NO3)2 at the concentration of 1,2 and 3 per cent, CaCl2 at the concentration of 1,2 and 3 per cent and GA3 at the concentration of 50, 100 and 150 ppm. Untreated fruits served as the control. All treatments exhibited significant reduction in PLW and spoilage loss, increased economic life and delay in the onset of pathogenic invasion. At end of experiment, GA3 100 ppm and Ca(NO3)2 at 2 per cent proved most promising treatment in these regards and were able to restrict the PLW at 17.86and18.33, Spoilage at 12.00 and 12.65 per cent respectively which was recorded 49.87 and 38.76 per cent respectively in case of control. The economic life under these treatments was 15 and 12 days in comparison to 6 days under control. These treatments were also proved excellent in restricting the invasion of pathogen up to 12th day of storage whereas fruits under control were found heavily infected on this day. The microorganism associated with the decay was identified as Aspergillus niger.

Alginate beads attract attention as a encapsulation matrix of bioactive substances in food. However, the stability of beads depends on calcium ion and sodium alginate concentration, gelling time and others factors. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of different types of calcium salts on the structural and mechanical parameters - the rupture force and rupture deformation at different gelling times of the pear jam prepared with soluble dietary fibers and inulin. The relationships between the rupture force and rupture deformation of the fruit jams were established. By increasing the gelling time from 24 hours to 48 hours, the rupture deformation of jams with 7% calcium lactate were reduced and in those with 7% CaCl2 the rupture forces increases. Any change in rupture force was observed for the jam with 3.5% CaCl2. This study demonstrated the practical application of different calcium salts for preparation of stable pear jam.

Tumoral calcinosis is a benign, progressive disorder characterized by massive periarticular deposition of calcium salts into subcutaneous and deeper tissue layers. While a majority of cases present secondary to underlying metabolic disorders, it can rarely present as a primary, idiopathic phenomenon. We present an atypical case of a pediatric patient with a large, ulcerated pedal soft tissue mass found to be consistent with primary tumoral calcinosis. This was confirmed by histopathologic analysis and comprehensive metabolic workup. The patient underwent surgical excision of the mass, with complete resolution of symptoms and no recurrence after a 1-year follow-up period.

The aim of this paper was to carry out a comprehensive study of wheat flour breads fortified with different sources of calcium, which includes: technological, nutritional and sensorial characteristics. Calcium salts (lactate: LA, carbonate: CA, and citrate: CI) at two fortification levels (20% and 50%) were analysed. Only the LA fortified breads were harder with lower specific volume and the LA 50% showed the higher chewiness value. The crust colour of the CI 50% breads presented the lower browning index. In vitro nutritional studies showed that calcium content on digest and dialysate was significantly higher in all fortified breads. The CI 20% and all the 50% fortifications showed a better contribution of bioaccessible calcium. Sensorial general quality was not significantly different between fortified and Control breads. Oxygen consumption measurement was used to study potential oxidative degradation reactions occurring in wooden artefacts from the Viking age Oseberg collection in Norway. Model samples of fresh birch were impregnated with iron, calcium and alum salts to mimic concentrations of such compounds found in Oseberg artefacts and to assess their effect on oxygen consumption rates. The results showed that heated impregnation with alum salt (KAl(SO4)2·12H2O) significantly increased the rate of oxygen consumption, confirming a previously observed link between alum-treatment and wood oxidation. The presence of iron salts in alum-treated wood specimens, even at low concentrations, also substantially increased the oxidation rate. However, the mechanism by which this occurred appeared to be influenced by the alum-treatment. Samples treated with both iron and calcium salts were also studied, in order to investigate a proposed inhibition of iron-induced oxidation by calcium ions. However, these did not appear to consume oxygen at significantly different rates. In Oseberg samples, a large variation in oxygen consumption rates from 0.48 to an apparent 8.2 μg O2 (g wood)−1 day−1 was observed, and these values were consistently higher than those for reference fresh wood. The results demonstrated that oxygen consumption measurement is a viable method of evaluating chemical stability in this case, but is best applied to model samples with limited compositional variability., Heritage Science, 8 (1), ISSN:2050-7445

The trends, general patterns, and stages of evolutionary processes, in particular, the evolution of solid matter in crystallization processes, have been considered. The role of the logistic (sigmoid) function in the description of the kinetics of evolutionary processes has been shown. Mathematical modeling of the chemical precipitation of slightly soluble salts has been performed taking into account the rates of crystal growth and nucleation. It has been found that different models lead to the S-shaped dependence of the same form, which adequately describes the formation of crystalline precipitates of slightly soluble calcium salts from supersaturated aqueous solutions.

This study evaluated the effects of 2 supplement dry matter (DM) amounts, with or without calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA), on growth performance, supplement and water intake behavior of grazing beef bulls. On day 0, 32 Nellore bulls were ranked by initial body weight (BW; 318 ± 11.2 kg), and then, randomly assigned to treatments (n = 8 bulls/treatment), in a 2 × 2 factorial design, which consisted of energy-based supplement DM amount of 0.3 (SP03) or 1.0 (SP1) % of BW with (+) or without (−) CSFA fortification (90 to 100 g/bull daily). During the experiment (98 d), all bulls were managed as single group and rotated between 2 Brachiaria pastures every 9 to 11 d. Each pasture contained an individual electronic data capture system with 2 feed bunks/treatment and 1 water through to determine individual supplement DM and water intake, as well number of visits, time spent at the feeder/waterer, and intake per visit (IPV). A supplement effect was detected (P = 0.02) for final BW. Bulls supplemented at 1.0% of BW, regardless of CSFA inclusion amount, were heavier at the end of the experiment vs. SP03 bulls. Overall average daily gain (ADG) was greater (P = 0.05) for SP03+ vs. SP03− bulls, and did not differ (P = 0.87) between SP1+ vs. SP1− bulls. No supplement amount, CSFA, or supplement amount × CSFA effects were observed (P ≥ 0.13) for supplement and water intake behavior, number of visits to the feeder or IPV. However, SP1 bulls spent (P = 0.05) more time at the feeder than SP1+ bulls, whereas bulls supplemented with CSFA tended (P = 0.10) to consume less water (as % of BW) than cohorts supplemented without CSFA. In summary, CSFA fortification into 0.3% of BW supplements increased ADG when compared with cohorts not offered CSFA. On the other hand, no benefits were observed when CSFA was included into 1.0% of BW supplements, primarily due to the lower than projected supplement, and consequently, CSFA intake. Moreover, CSFA fortification tended to reduced water intake, demonstrating a potential of this technology to increase performance of beef herds, while maintaining the utilization of natural resources.

Uptake of calcium from food depends on solubility of calcium salts in the intestines, and precipitation of calcium phosphates decreases bioaccessibility of food calcium. Citrate as a high affinity complex binder for calcium was found spontaneously to create strongly supersaturated solutions by rapid dissolution of calcium hydrogen phosphate characterized by short lag phases for precipitation. Gluconate with weaker affinity for calcium binding showed longer lag phases for precipitation from supersaturated solutions. For citrate/gluconate combinations, the highest degree of supersaturation with longest lag phases for precipitation were found by trial-and-error experiments for a citrate/gluconate ratio of 1:10 for dissolution of calcium hydrogen phosphate resulting in supersaturation factors around three and without precipitation for more than a month. The aim of the present study was to provide a physicochemical explanation of this robust supersaturation. Calcium speciation based on electrochemical calcium activity measurement identified a low [Ca2+]·[HCitr2−] product as critical for supersaturation.

One of the five major challenges of sustainable waste management in the agri-food industry by using the "zero-waste" model of the circular economy is the development of innovative waste transformation techniques for the production of chemicals, fine chemicals, bioactive compounds, enzymes and functional materials. These products have at least twice added value of products obtained from currently dominant outdated waste management strategies which are not in accordance with sustainable development. Eggshell waste is one on the wastes produced by agri-food industry whose majority instead being re-used, ends in landfill sites, additionally burdening the environment. Situation is quite concerning if one considers that at least 7, 894, 962 t of eggshell waste was generated annually worldwide of which 777, 000 t in the European Union in 2018. Keeping in mind current state of eggshell waste utilization/landfilling and the need for the development of innovative waste transformation techniques, we have designed “3 from 1” process of complete utilization of eggshell waste oriented toward “zero-waste” model. The process included eggshell waste washing, acid solvation and few additional steps for preparation of powdered calcium salts and eggshell membranes. After complete utilization of eggshell waste: clarified adherent egg white protein solution, three different types of eggshell membranes and three different calcium salts: calcium chloride, calcium acetate and calcium hydrogen phosphate of high purity was produced. In addition, spry-drying for the production of anhydrous calcium chloride was implemented. Based on results obtained, it can be concluded that designed “3 from 1” process has great potential to be used not only for the complete utilization of eggshell waste, but also for the production of high-value added products from it.

On day 0, 96 Nellore bulls were blocked according to initial shrunk body weight (BW; 302 +/- 26.7 kg) into group pens (four animals/pen) and, within blocks, pens were randomly assigned to receive: 1) 15% of WC and 2% of CSFA (dry matter [DM] basis) of palm, cottonseed, and soybean oil (15WC; n = 6); 2) 10% of WC and 3% of CSFA (DM basis) of palm, cottonseed, and soybean oil (10WC; n = 6); 3) 5% of WC and 4% of CSFA (DM basis) of palm, cottonseed, and soybean oil (5WC; n = 6); and 4) 0% of WC and 5% of CSFA (DM basis) of palm, cottonseed, and soybean oil (0WC; n = 6). Diets were formulated to be isocaloric, isonitrogenous, and isolipidic. Experimental period lasted 108 d; DMI was evaluated daily, whereas blood samples and carcass measurements were obtained on days 0, 55, and 108 of the study. Upon slaughter on day 109, steaks were collected for determination of the chemical and fatty acid (FA) profile of the meat. No treatment effects (P >= 0.35) were observed on DMI, performance, average daily gain (ADG), carcass ultrasound measurements, and chemical variables of the steak. Nonetheless, including WC into the diets decreased C12:0, C16:0, C16:1 trans-9, C17:0, C18:0, C18:1 cis-9, C18:2 cis-9, cis-12, C18:3 cis-9, cis-12, cis-15, saturated, and unsaturated FA intake (P < 0.01). Reduction of the infiltration characteristics of rocks and grounds is an important task in mining, constructing, and economic development of territories, as well as in ecological problems solving. Within the framework of the research, the possibility of reduction of the filtration characteristics of the ground by precipitation of calcium salts in ground pore space was studied. Two chemical and one biotechnological techniques were used. The field test of the techniques was conducted in experimental plots consisted of fine- and medium-grained sand. It was found that the maximum reduction of the filtration rate was recorded at the level of 79–81% compared to the initial characteristics, when these innovative techniques were implemented. Mineralogical studies, including SEM and XRD analyses, indicated the appearance of secondary mineral formation (CaSO4 and CaCO3) after ground treatment, which led to a reduction in its filtration characteristics. A potential application area of the proposed innovative techniques could be mining, constructing, and implementing of environmental protection measures.

The impacts of adding calcium chloride (CaCl2) and calcium lactate (CaLac) with different concentrations (0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.7%) on the physicochemical properties of cured beef sausages were investigated in this study. Meat color, pH, lipid oxidation, and cooking loss were measured at respective manufacturing stages (ground beef, raw chopped batter, and after cooking). Additionally, meat color, pH, lipid oxidation, nitrosylhemochrome, residual nitrite, and texture profiles of vacuum-packaged sausages were evaluated during seven days of storage. Compared with the control (no Ca added), both calcium salts resulted in deteriorative color and texture properties, and promoted pH decline, cooking loss, and lipid oxidation of sausages during manufacturing and storage. However, increased calcium salt addition led to the reduction of residual nitrite over time. Compared to CaCl2 addition, 0.2–0.4% CaLac resulted in greater redness and oxidative stability and softer texture. These results may be useful when considering calcium salt additions in sausages, for the purpose of co-extruded sausages coated with alginate where Ca salts are used to form the casing during the co-extrusion of the sausages.

This study, conducted at São Paulo University feedlot, Dracena, Brazil, was designed to evaluate the effect of adding either high-moisture corn, calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA), or organic Zn+Cr on feedlot performance and carcass traits of Nellore cattle fed for 112 days. One-hundred fifty 18-mo-old Nellore bulls (404±24kg) were used and initially ranked, according to sires’ information, into groups of high and low EPD. Secondly, cattle were blocked by weight and randomly allocated to 30 pens (n = 5/pen), which were randomly assigned to the following 2x2 + 1 arrangement of treatments: Finely-ground corn, High-moisture corn, Finely-ground + CSFA, High-moisture corn + CSFA, and High-moisture corn + CSFA + Zn (90 ppm) and Cr (0.45 ppm). All diets contained 25 ppm of monensin. On day 0, one animal per pen was randomly selected to be slaughtered for baseline purposes. The replacement of finely-ground by high-moisture corn increased (P < 0.05) final BW (585 vs. 573 kg), ADG, HCW (321 kg vs. 315 kg) and decreased (P < 0.01) DMI (9.7 vs. 10.1 kg). Likewise, the addition of CSFA increased final BW, ADG (1.62 vs. 1.50 kg), and HCW (321 vs. 314 kg). The addition of Cr+Zn led to increased (P = 0.02) dressing percentage. No treatment effect was observed on final marbling (P > 0.55). It was observed interactions between treatments and EPD for G:F (P = 0.02) and final 12thrib-fat thickness (P = 0.03), where cattle from low-EPD groups needed high-moisture corn, CSFA and organic Zn+Cr to improve G:F and increase fat deposition; however, animals from high-EPD groups required only high-moisture corn. The adding of either high-moisture corn, CSFA, or organic Zn+Cr improved feedlot performance of Nellore cattle, and its effects seemed to be more effective in animals from low-EPD groups.

Families and physicians alike benefit from the advances and ease of the Internet. Similarly, both can be unaware of harmful misinformation circulating the Web. In this article, we describe the presentation of 2 unrelated infants, within 1 week of each other, with vitamin D deficiency rickets and severe extraskeletal manifestations of hypocalcemia, including seizures and cardiac arrest, from homemade, vegan formula found through Pinterest (San Francisco, CA). Despite good parental intentions this formula did not meet macronutrient and micronutrient standards, particularly regarding vitamin D, phosphorus, and calcium content, and led to rare, life-threatening complications in both cases. Before presentation, both patients followed appropriately with their pediatrician and discussed feeding in detail, although neither family disclosed the use of homemade formula. Pediatricians must be aware of these dangerous homemade alternative formulas, consider the manner and depth of their feeding history questioning, and continue to counsel against homemade formula to prevent further harm to children.

Fatty acid composition across functional brain regions was determined in bovine brains collected from cattle that were provided supplements of calcium salts containing either palm or fish oil. The Angus cattle were divided into two groups, with one group offered the supplement of calcium salts of palm oil and the other offered the calcium salts of fish oil (n = 5 females and n = 5 males/supplement) for 220 days. These supplements to the basal forage diet were provided ad libitum as a suspension in dried molasses. The fish oil exclusively provided eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3). The functional regions were dissected from the entire brains following commercial harvest. While the cattle provided diets supplemented with the calcium salts of palm oil had increased (p < 0.01) liver concentrations of C18:1 n-9, C18:2 n-6, and arachidonic acid, the fish-oil-supplemented cattle had greater (p < 0.01) concentrations of liver EPA, DHA, and C18:3 n-3. In the brain, DHA was the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid. In the amygdala, pons, frontal lobe, internal capsule, and sensory cortex, DHA concentrations were greater (p < 0.05) in the brains of the cattle fed fish oil. Differences among the supplements were small, indicating that brain DHA content is resistant to dietary change. Arachidonic acid and C22:4 n-6 concentrations were greater across the regions for the palm-oil-supplemented cattle. EPA and C22:5 n-3 concentrations were low, but they were greater across the regions for the cattle fed fish oil. The effects of sex were inconsistent. The fatty acid profiles of the brain regions differed by diet, but they were similar to the contents reported for other species.

Kuhani sir je autohtoni hrvatski sir u kojem je jedan od najvažnijih čimbenika sol, odnosno NaCl. Prekomjerni unos natrija smatra se glavnim uzročnikom hipertenzije, kardiovaskularnih i brojnih drugih bolesti. Cilj ovog rada bio je istražiti mogućnost djelomične redukcije i zamjene natrijevog klorida kalcijevim solima u kuhanom siru te ispitati njihov utjecaj na proces proizvodnje te fizikalno-kemijske i senzorske karakteristike sira. Proizvedeni kuhani sir čuvan je tijekom 21 dan, a svakog prvog, sedmog, četrnaestog i dvadesetprvog dana čuvanja provedena su fizikalno-kemijska, mikrobiološka, teksturalna i senzorska ispitivanja. Na temelju provedenog istraživanja može se zaključiti kako se kalcijeve soli mogu koristiti kao djelomična zamjena za NaCl. Cooked cheese is an autochthonous Croatian cheese in which one of the most important factors is salt, ie NaCl. Excessive sodium intake is considered a major cause of hypertension, cardiovascular and a number of other diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of partial reduction and replacement of sodium chloride with calcium salts in cooked cheese and to examine their impact on the production process and the physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of cheese. The produced cooked cheese was hermetically sealed and stored for 21 days, and physicochemical, microbiological and sensory tests were performed every first, seventh, fourteenth and twenty-first day of storage. Based on the conducted research, it can be concluded that calcium salts can be used as a partial replacement for NaCl.

We describe a case series of encapsulated fat necrosis with subcutaneous, abdominal, and thoracic locations in 7 subsistence-harvested bowhead whales Balaena mysticetus. Masses had a variably-dense fibrous capsule surrounding necrotic adipocytes and calcium salts (saponification). One animal also had prior concussive injury, pleural fibrosis, and hepatic lipoma; the other animals had no significant findings. The described condition is uncommon in bowhead whales, with 7/575 (1.2%) observed from 1996 to 2015. The exact mechanisms of development of encapsulated fat necrosis in bowhead whales remain to be determined. Encapsulated fat necrosis has been reported in other baleen whales, humans, and cows. It is usually an incidental finding during post-mortem examination that needs to be differentiated from neoplastic and inflammatory lesions, as the latter may have public health implications. Assessment of further cases in bowhead whales and other baleen whales is warranted to better understand their pathogenesis.

The aim of this work was to analyze the influence of frozen storage and selected substances on the quality of horse meat. The research material consisted of samples of the longest thorax muscle obtained from 12 half-carcases of horses. The use of citric acid and calcium salts contributes to deterioration of hydration properties of horse meat. Extension of frozen storage time from 1 to 3 months resulted in a decrease in the value of water retaining capacity in the analysed raw material. Regardless of the length of frozen storage of horse meat, the applied substances reduced in a statistically significant way the values of hardness and stiffness of the analysed raw material. Extension of frozen storage time influenced the increase of pH value (statistically significant differences) of meat subjected to marinating only with citric acid.

This study evaluated the effects of supplementing Ca salts of soybean oil (CSSO) to beef steers at 2 mo of age via creep-feeding, and/or during a 40-d preconditioning period on performance and carcass development responses. A total of 64 steers were enrolled in this study over 2 yr (32 steers per year), with 4 periods each year: creep-feeding (CF; day 0 to 60), preweaning (day 61 to weaning on day 124 and 127 of year 1 and 2, respectively), preconditioning (PC; day 132 to 172 in year 1 and day 135 to 175 of year 2), and feedlot (feedlot arrival to slaughter, day 173 to 378 in year 1 and day 176 to 385 in year 2). On day 0 steers were ranked by body weight (BW) and age (114 ± 4 kg of BW; 66.1 ± 0.9 d of age) and allocated to 1 of 16 pens. Pens were randomly assigned to receive CSSO during CF (80 g/d per steer) and/or PC (150 g/d per steer) in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. During CF and PC, nonsupplemented steers (CON) were provided an isolipidic prilled saturated fat supplement. Steer BW was recorded on day 0, 60, at weaning, and prior to feedlot shipping. Carcass traits were recorded upon slaughter. On day 0, 60, at weaning, prior to feedlot shipping, and during the feedlot period, blood samples were collected and longissimus muscle (LM) biopsies were collected. On day 60, steers that received CSSO during CF had greater (P < 0.01) plasma concentrations of linoleic and ω-6 compared with CON (CF treatment × day; P ≤ 0.05). Steers that received CSSO during PC had greater (P < 0.01) plasma concentrations of linoleic, ω-6, and total fatty acids compared with CON at feedlot shipping (PC treatment × day; P ≤ 0.05). A PC treatment × day interaction was also detected (P = 0.04) for mRNA expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), which was greater (P = 0.04) at feedlot shipping for steers receiving CSSO during PC. Interactions between CF treatment × day were detected (P ≤ 0.01) for mRNA expression of adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein, fatty acid synthase, PPAR-γ, and stearoyl-CoA desaturase, which were greater (P ≤ 0.02) in the feedlot in steers receiving CSSO during CF. No treatment differences were detected for (P ≥ 0.18) performance or carcass traits, including marbling and backfat thickness. Results from this study suggest that supplementing CSSO to suckled beef steers via creep-feeding upregulated mRNA expression of the adipogenic genes investigated herein later in life. These outcomes, however, were not translated into improved carcass quality.

The objective was to evaluate the seminal quality of Morada Nova sheep consuming diets supplemented with macadamia residue and protected fat. The experiment was carried out with 24 rams aged 18 or 30 months, distributed in four treatment groups: control (C), 50 g (MAC50) or 150 g (MAC150) of macadamia industrial by-product; and 50 g of protected fat (Megalac®), added to the concentrate. Semen was collected at four intervals: before supplementation (day 0), 30, 60 and 75 days after the beginning of supplementation. Semen was collected to measure volume, appearance, motility, vigour, swirling, concentration and morphology. At days 60 and 75, semen was frozen for determination of plasma membrane integrity, acrosome integrity and mitochondrial activity after thawing. Analysis of variance was performed and the means were compared by the SNK test. In the analysis of fresh semen, a significant effect (p < 0.05) of the treatments on motility was observed. For cryopreserved semen, there was no difference (p > 0.05). The inclusion of 50 or 150 g of macadamia residue or 50 g of Megalac in the diet does not alter the quantitative and qualitative aspects of fresh and post-thawed semen.

An effective synthetic method for unsymmetrical carbonate species has been developed. Calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide were found to be highly effective for this reaction, affording unsymmetrical carbonates in high yield and purity. Calcium chloride, which is a coproduct, serves as a water scavenger that can be easily removed. Additional drying processes and complicated purification steps are not necessary in this reaction. This improved process is important in terms of green sustainable chemistry principles.

Nixtamalization is a pre-Columbian process in which corn kernels are cooked in a calcium hydroxide solution. In the traditional nixtamalization process (TNP), corn kernels undergo physical and chemical changes that result in the quality properties of final food products. However, such method has some disadvantages, especially the generation of a considerable volume of polluting effluents, the long time it requires, and a loss of nutrients. This paper reviews alternative processes aiming to solve those problems, weighing in their pros and cons, and their potential for industrial use. Some ecological methods have been developed replacing calcium hydroxide for other calcium salts (calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and calcium chloride), thus reducing the polluting effect of effluents, while obtaining products with acceptable quality properties. Technology-based methods have also been adopted, involving the use of microwaves, ultrasound, extrusion, heating with low-shear transport, and ohmic heating. Just some of the methods mentioned have resulted in intermediate and final products with quality properties similar to those obtained through the TNP.

Opacities in the orofacial soft tissue rather than the bone are frequently seen on panoramic radiographs. The differential diagnosis of these opacities is diverse and comprises abnormalities both frequently seen and rare. On account of this diversity, the clinical interpretation of a soft tissue opacity is often difficult. Heterotopic calcifications, heterotopic ossifications, and foreign bodies are distinguished. Heterotopic calcifications are subdivided into 3 groups, i.e. dystrophic calcifications, idiopathic calcifications, and metastatic calcifications. In this article, the emphasis will be on radiological and clinical characteristics of dystrophic calcifications and how to recognize these on panoramic radiographs. In dystrophic calcification, calcium salts are deposited in chronically inflamedor necrotic tissue.Regelmatig worden op een panoramische röntgenopname opake structuren gezien die niet in het bot maar in de weke delen zijn gelegen. De differentiële diagnose van dergelijke opaciteiten is divers en bevat vaak voorkomende maar ook zeldzame afwijkingen. Vanwege de diversiteit is het klinisch duiden van een wekedelenopaciteit vaak lastig. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt in heterotopische calcificaties, heterotopische ossificaties en corpora aliena. Heterotopische calcificaties worden onderverdeeld in 3 groepen, te weten dystrofische, idiopathische en metastatische calcificaties. In dit artikel wordt de nadruk gelegd op de radiologische en klinische kenmerken van dystrofische calcificaties en hoe deze op een panoramische röntgenopname kunnen worden herkend. Bij dystrofische calcificaties slaan calciumzouten neer in chronisch ontstoken of necrotisch weefsel.

Research in plant disease management focuses on developing safe methods for humans and the environment in order to prevent the entry of harmful chemicals in food. Simple inorganic salts have low cost and are safe enough to be used as pesticides. Phytophthora genus causes crown and root rot (gummosis) in crops and leads to great losses in some pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) production areas annually. In this study, the potential efficacy of different calcium salts with various concentrations on Phytophthora pistaciae control was examined. This was done to find out a safe way of material usage instead of synthetic pesticides. Samples from the crown of a pistachio tree, with gummosis, were cultured on lima bean agar to isolate and purify the pathogen. P. pistaciae identification was done using the PCR method with ITS4 and ITS6 primers. Pathogenicity of isolate was confirmed through tests on apples, pistachio branches, and pistachio seedlings. Different concentrations of seven calcium salts (chloride, nitrate, sulfate, oxide, hydroxide, phosphate, and carbonate) were applied which reduced mycelial growth and 3000ppm of calcium oxide inhibited it completely. Most of the salts reduced the number of sporangia, zoospores, and cyst germination percentage. Calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide also caused hyphae branching and deformation of some sporangia. The results suggested that some calcium salts, especially calcium oxide, could control the growth of P. pistaciae in vitro. Future in vivo studies are needed to examine whether calcium salts can reduce the disease severity and spread of the pathogen in the environment if those are sprinkled over the soil around the infested crown.

Feeding goats with calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA) can supply ruminants with lipids, with minimal effects on ruminal fermentation and fiber digestibility. However, there is a shortage of information on the effect of CSFA on characteristics of rumen fermentation in grassland goats. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the addition of CSFA to concentrate on the parameters of rumen fermentation of grazing goats. Five rumen cannulated goats were distributed in a Latin square 5x5 design (treatments: 0%, 1.5%, 3.0%, 4.5% and 6.0% CSFA. The pH, ammonia N and volatile fatty acids (VFA) content were analyzed in the ruminal fluid at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours after concentrate supplementation. The pH and ammonia N concentration showed a linear effect with the addition of CSFA. There was no effect observed for the VFA molar concentration after grazing goats were fed with the experimental diet. In conclusion, further research is needed to investigate the addition of CSFA to goat diets because there is evidence that CSFA increases ruminal pH and decreases excess ruminal ammonia without changing the VFA concentration in the rumen fluid. Alimentar cabras com sais de cálcio de ácidos graxos (SCAG) pode fornecer aos ruminantes lipídios, com efeitos mínimos na fermentação ruminal e digestibilidade das fibras. No entanto, há escassez de informações sobre o efeito da SCAG sobre as características da fermentação do rúmen em cabras de pastagem. Assim, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a adição de SCAG no concentrado de cabras na passagem sob nos parâmetros de fermentação ruminal. Cinco cabras canuladas do rúmen foram distribuídas em um quadrado latino 5x5 (tratamentos: 0%, 1,5%, 3,0%, 4,5% ou 6,0% de SCAG). O pH, N-amoniacal e ácidos graxos voláteis (AGV) foram analisado no liquido ruminal coletado às 0, 2, 4, 6 e 8 horas após a suplementação com concentrado. As concentrações de pH e N-amoniacal mostraram um efeito linear com a adição de SCAG. Não houve efeito observado para a concentração molar de AGV quando as cabras foram alimentadas com a dieta experimental. Em conclusão, são necessárias mais pesquisas para investigar a adição de SCAG às dietas de cabra, porque há evidências de que o SCAG aumenta o pH ruminal e diminui o excesso de amônia ruminal sem alterar a concentração de AGV no liquido ruminal.

The objectives were to evaluate the effects of supplementation with doses of calcium salts of palm oil with or without Lysolecithin on production responses, nutrient digestibility, energy intake and balance, metabolic responses, and ruminal responses of early lactation dairy cows on dry lot. Forty-four early lactation Holstein cows (Holstein or ¾Holstein ¼ Jersey), 28 multiparous and 16 primiparous (average ± SD at the beginning of the experiment; DIM = 20 ± 4 and 20 ± 9; milk yield = 25 ± 3.7 kg and 19 ± 2.5 kg; BW = 553 ± 11 kg and 444 ± 14 kg, respectively), were used in a randomized complete block design in the performance trial and three ruminal cannulated cows in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square design, in the metabolism trial. Cows were fed corn silage ad libitum plus 9 kg of concentrate (as fed), provided individually, containing calcium salts of palm oil (CSPO) associated or not with Lysolecithin (1% of Lysoforte®, , Kemin Industries, Inc. with 98% of Lysolecithin). The trial lasted 90 days and started between week 3 and 4 postpartum. The treatments were control (concentrate with 400g of CSPO without Lysolecithin (CSPO-400); and concentrates with three levels of CSPO with 1% Lysolecithin (CSPOL), 280g, 340g and 400g. Preplanned contrasts were made to determine the effects of Lysolecithin (Lyso), comparing the treatments with 400g of CSPO supplementation, and linear (L) or quadratic (Q) effect of increasing CSPO with Lysolecithin (280, 340 and 400g of CSPOL) in the performance trial and effect of Lysolecithin (Lyso) and effect of the CSPO with Lysolecithin increase (280g to 400g of CSPOL); (D), in the metabolism trial. For the performance trial, dry matter intake, intake of dietary nutrients, and apparent digestibility of nutrients were measured twice during the experimental period (at 35 and 65 DIM). These variables were not different between treatments CSPO and CSPOL-400. The levels of CSPOL tended to cause a linear decrease on the intakes of DM and OM, and a linear increase on the intake and apparent digestibility of FA. There were no treatment effects on yields of milk, milk components and on cumulative milk yield. The treatment with CSPOL-400 tended to cause a decrease on milk fat content, and an increase on MUN compared with CSPO-400, while levels of CSPOL caused a linear decrease on milk fat content and on MUN content. Cow BW, BW changes and BCS were not affected by feeding Lysolecithin and levels of CSPOL. Feeding Lysolecithin for dairy cows fed 400 g of inert fat had no effect on energy intake, energy output, energy balance and efficiency of energy utilization. During the treatment period, there was no effect of Lysolecithin on plasma concentrations of total protein, insulin, NEFA and urea. However, supplementing Lysolecithin increased plasma glucose concentration. Levels of CSPOL caused a linear increase on plasma glucose concentration. For the metabolism trial, feeding Lysolecithin to lactating dairy cows fed 400g of inert fat had no effect on intake and digestibility of DM and nutrients, on rumen pH, total VFA, molar proportions of acetate, butyrate and isobutyrate, on C2:C3 ratio and on rumen NH3-N concentration, but tended to increase rumen propionate and increased rumen valerate. We conclude that the Lysolecithin had no effect on nutrient intake and total-tract digestibility, metabolic-hormonal profile, energy partitioning, milk yield and on most milk component contents, BW and BCS of early lactating cows fed 400g of CSPO. In addition, in the presence of Lysolicithin, increasing CSPO supplementation from 280 to 400g did not improve cow performance. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram avaliar os efeitos da suplementação com doses de sais de cálcio de ácido graxo do óleo de palma com ou sem Lisolecitina sobre as respostas produtivas, digestibilidade dos nutrientes, ingestão e partição energética, respostas metabólicas e respostas ruminais de vacas em início de lactação em confinamento. Quarenta e quatro vacas Holandês ou ¾Holstein x ¼ Jersey, sendo 16 primíparas e 28 multíparas, em início de lactação (média ± DP no início do experimento; DEL = 20 ± 4 e 20 ± 9; produção de leite = 25 ± 3,7 kg/d e 19 ± 2,5 kg/d; PC = 553 ± 11 kg e 444 ± 14 kg, respectivamente), foram usadas em um delineamento em blocos ao acaso para o ensaio de desempenho e três vacas canuladas no rúmen foram utilizadas em um quadrado latino 3 x 3 replicado, para o ensaio que avaliou os parâmetros ruminais. As vacas foram alimentadas com silagem de milho ad libitum e com fornecimento individualizado de 9 kg de concentrado, contendo sais de cálcio de ácidos graxos do óleo de palma (CSPO) associados ou não à lisolecitina (1% de Lysoforte®, Kemin Industries, Inc. com 98% de Lisolecitina). O período experimental teve duração de 90 dias, iniciando entre a terceira e quarta semana após o parto. Os tratamentos foram controle (concentrado com 400g de CSPO sem Lisolecitina (CSPO-400); e concentrado com três níveis de CSPO com Lisolecitina a 1% (CSPOL), 280g, 340g e 400g. Os contrastes pré-planejados foram elaborados para determinar o efeito da suplementação com Lisolecitina (Lyso), comparando ambos os tratamentos com 400g de suplementação de CSPO e efeito linear (L) ou quadrático (Q) do aumento da inclusão de CSPO em presença de Lisolecitina no experimento de desempenho e efeito da Lisolecitina (Lyso) e do aumento CSPO em presença de Lisolecitina (de 280g para 400g de CSPOL) (D), no experimento que avaliou os parâmetros ruminais. O consumo de matéria seca, o consumo de nutrientes e a digestibilidade aparente desses nutrientes foram medidos duas vezes durante o período experimental (35 DEL e 65 DEL). Essas variáveis não foram diferentes entre os tratamentos CSPO e CSPOL-400. Os níveis de CSPOL tenderam a causar diminuição linear no consumo de MS e MO, e aumento linear no consumo de AG e na digestibilidade aparente de AG. Não houve efeitos do tratamento na produção de leite, componentes do leite e produção acumulada de leite. O tratamento com CSPOL-400 tendeu a causar diminuição no teor de gordura do leite e aumento no NUL em comparação com CSPO-400, enquanto os níveis de CSPOL causaram diminuição linear no teor de gordura do leite e no teor de NUL. O peso corporal (PC) da vaca, as alterações do PC e o ECC não foram afetados pela alimentação com Lisolecitina e níveis de CSPOL. A alimentação de Lisolecitina para vacas leiteiras alimentadas com 400 g de gordura inerte não teve efeito sobre a ingestão de energia, produção de energia, balanço de energia e eficiência de utilização de energia. Durante o período de tratamento, não houve efeito da Lisolecitina nas concentrações plasmáticas de proteína total, insulina NEFA e ureia. No entanto, a suplementação com Lisolecitina aumentou a concentração de glicose no plasma. Os níveis de CSPOL causaram aumento linear na concentração de glicose no plasma. A alimentação de Lisolecitina para vacas em lactação alimentadas com 400g de gordura inerte não afetou o consumo e a digestibilidade da MS e nutrientes, no pH ruminal, AGV total, proporções molares de acetato, butirato e isobutirato, na relação C2:C3 e no NH3-N ruminal concentração, mas tendeu a aumentar o propionato ruminal e a aumentar o valerato ruminal. Concluímos que a Lisolecitina não teve efeito sobre a ingestão de nutrientes e digestibilidade no trato total, perfil metabólico-hormonal, partição de energia, produção de leite e na maioria dos componentes do leite, PC e ECC de vacas no terço inicial de lactação alimentadas com 400g de CSPO. Além disso, em presença de Lisolecitina, não houve melhora no desempenho das vacas com o aumento da suplementação com gordura de palma de 280 a 400g/dia.

Background Orthopaedic surgeons prefer calcium supplement for various pathologies like fracture, osteoporosis, chronic musculoskeletal pain, yet there is no proper evidence to support the benefits of taking them regularly. The average requirement for calcium is around 500–1000 mg/day for a healthy adult, this amount of calcium is not achieved by diet, especially in developing countries like India. Despite this, the serum calcium level remains unaltered, due to the well-controlled absorption and excretion of calcium by the human body. As there is no clarity over the dose, duration and the prefered calcium salts, we constructed a survey to find the preferred dose, duration, the preferred calcium salts among orthopaedic surgeons, and to give an in-depth review of literature about dose, duration, timing, preferred calcium salt and various other calcium-related queries. Materials and method The survey included 15 pre-structured questionnaires; these questions were formatted and validated by senior surgeons and other specialists after a through a review of calcium-related literature. These questionnaires were used in a pilot study conducted within the department and were later modified and separated into 7 sections. Data were collected by both online survey (google forms) and direct interviews. Result and conclusion 128 Orthopedic surgeons responded. The total number of response obtained was 2355. Unanswered questions were 152. From the survey, it was found that most orthopaedic surgeons prefer to prescribe calcium routinely (55.46%). The commonly used calcium salt was calcium carbonate (47.65%), followed by citrate (32.8%). 42.18% were not aware of the efficiency of prescribing calcium in divided doses. Most responded that calcium is not to be given for patients with renal stones, but literature shows that calcium prescribed reduces the recurrence of commonest kidney stones, calcium oxalate stones.

Objectives were to investigate the effects of supplementing Ca salts of fatty acids to beef cows during late gestation on the pre-weaning growth performance and gene expression of steer progeny. Ninety-six fall-calving, Angus x Simmental cows (BW = 601±76 kg) were randomly assigned into 8 pastures (4 pastures/treatment; 12 cows/pasture), supplemented soyhulls mixed with 80 g/cow/d Strata + 80 g/cow/d Prequel (PUFA, rich in linoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid) or 155 g/cow/d EnerGII (SFA/MUFA, rich in palmitic and oleic acids) for 76.5±6.0 d prepartum. Cow/calf pairs were comingled after calving. Biopsies of Longissimus dorsi (LD) and subcutaneous adipose were taken at birth and 3 wk before weaning (186±6 d). The data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS. Supplementing PUFA increased (P < 0.01) cow plasma eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid at midpoint of supplementation. At birth, PUFA steers had greater (P < 0.05) plasma EPA and lower (P < 0.01) plasma linolenic acid and oleic acid than SFA/MUFA steers. Weaning BW and pre-weaning ADG of the SFA/MUFA steers tended (P < 0.07) to be greater than PUFA steers. SFA/MUFA steers had increased (P = 0.04) expression of Zfp423 in adipose. There tended to be a treatment×time interaction (P = 0.06) for expression of Myf5 in LD; expression of Myf5 was greatest in SFA/MUFA steers at birth. There was a treatment×time interaction (P = 0.05) for expression of Pax7; expression was greater in SFA/MUFA steers at birth than any treatment at weaning. There were treatment×time interactions (P < 0.01) for expression of Myh7 and C/EBPβ in LD; expressions were greatest in PUFA steers at weaning. Supplementing Ca salts of PUFA to beef cows during late gestation altered plasma fatty acid profile of cow and calf, affected gene expression, and decreased offspring growth performance.

Objectives were to investigate the effects of late-gestation supplementation of Ca salts of fatty acids to beef cows on cow performance and offspring pre-weaning growth performance. One hundred and ninety fall-calving, Angus Simmental cows were ranked by BW, BCS, and age. Cows were randomly assigned into 12 endophyte-infected, tall fescue pastures (4 pastures/treatment; 15–16 cows/pasture). Cows were fed an isocaloric supplement with soybean hulls mixed with: whole-shelled corn (CON), 155 g/cow/d of EnerGII (SFA/MUFA), or 40 g/cow/d of Strata 120 g/cow/d of Prequel (PUFA) during the last 83 4.9 d of gestation. Cow BW and BCS were measured at the initial, middle point, and end of supplementation, as well as at breeding and weaning. Milk yield was evaluated by weigh-suckle-weigh technique at 675.0 d postpartum. Steers were weaned at 174 5.0 d of age. Growth performance, milk, and blood parameters were analyzed with MIXED and reproductive data were analyzed with GLIMMIX procedures of SAS. The BW and BCS of the cows were not different (P 0.19) from trial initiation through weaning. Birth BW of the steers was not different (P = 0.62). The AI or overall pregnancy rates were not different (P 0.88). There was no difference (P 0.12) in milk yield or components. However, C15:0 and total n-3 fatty acids in milk from dams supplemented with PUFA was greater (P 0.05) than CON, while SFA/MUFA was intermediate and not different than the others. There was no difference (P = 0.83) for weaning BW of the steers. In conclusion, late-gestation supplementation of Ca salts of PUFA had no effect on cow BW, BCS, or milk yield, but increased total n-3 fatty acids in milk. Neither birth BW nor weaning BW of steers were affected by maternal fatty acid supplementation.

Dietary supplements composed by the combination of a calcium salt with cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) are widely used for improving bone health in conditions caused by the deficiency of these compounds in the body. Historically, these supplements have been linked to quality and safety issues. In the case of calcium salts, the presence of potentially toxic contaminants such as lead (Pb) has already been alerted by health authorities from different countries. Meanwhile, cholecalciferol is very unstable under inadequate manufacturing and storage conditions. The content of both compounds in commercial dietary supplements is often found to be in disagreement with the label claims, which can lead to a deficient or excessive nutrient intake by consumers. In this scenario, analyzing these compounds is still a difficult and time-consuming task, which usually requires specific pretreatment procedures and multiple analytical methods due to the inorganic nature of calcium and the organic nature of cholecalciferol. Therefore, this article reviews the analytical methods, described in official compendia and scientific literature, for the determination of calcium salts and cholecalciferol in dietary supplement formulations. We also approached the sample preparation procedures highly required due to the matrix complexity of these materials.

The first condition for recovery after fracture is obtaining proper qualification for surgical treatment. Next the surgery must be made as fast as possible in order to provide internal diagnostics, while simultaneously maintaining the patientapos;s safety. Itapos;s very important to create optimal conditions for bone healing. The essence of the problemquot;osteoporotic fracturesquot; is low bone mineral density (BMD). It was found that in researchapos;in vivoapos;, it is possible to reach a higher value of this factor via supplementation with ossein-hydroxyapatite complex (OHC) as compared to standard Calcium Salts.

Enteric hyperoxaluria is a distinct entity that can occur as a result of a diverse set of gastrointestinal disorders that promote fat malabsorption. This, in turn, leads to excess absorption of dietary oxalate and increased urinary oxalate excretion. Hyperoxaluria increases the risk of kidney stones and, in more severe cases, CKD and even kidney failure. The prevalence of enteric hyperoxaluria has increased over recent decades, largely because of the increased use of malabsorptive bariatric surgical procedures for medically complicated obesity. This systematic review of enteric hyperoxaluria was completed as part of a Kidney Health Initiative-sponsored project to describe enteric hyperoxaluria pathophysiology, causes, outcomes, and therapies. Current therapeutic options are limited to correcting the underlying gastrointestinal disorder, intensive dietary modifications, and use of calcium salts to bind oxalate in the gut. Evidence for the effect of these treatments on clinically significant outcomes, including kidney stone events or CKD, is currently lacking. Thus, further research is needed to better define the precise factors that influence risk of adverse outcomes, the long-term efficacy of available treatment strategies, and to develop new therapeutic approaches.

Background: Hygroscopic salts are often applied as foliar fertilizers and calcium (Ca) salts have been used as model for cuticular permeability studies, with focus on their Point of Deliquescence (POD). Aim: This study was aimed at characterizing water sorption and desorption processes at 20, 30, and 40°C temperature (T), of two model Ca salts commonly used as foliar sprays. Methods: Trials were developed with pure Ca-chloride and Ca-nitrate salts in addition to 2 M and 150 mM Ca solutions. Salts were analyzed by Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS) and climate chamber experiments. Results: For both Ca salts, water sorption and desorption processes followed hysteresis curves which varied with T. Salt POD was T-dependent and generally decreased with increasing T. For both Ca salts, the process of efflorescence began at or below 10% RH, at a certain level of water desorption Ca-salts becoming highly concentrated solutions (HCS). Conclusions: Owing to the low point of efflorescence (POE) of both salts, drops of Ca-chloride and Ca-nitrate supplied as foliar sprays will not fully dry under normal RH and T conditions in most world areas. Both Ca salts have a similarly high foliar penetration potential despite their different POD.
