The current paper explores the impact that an augmented reality shopping assistant may have on consumers’ emotional and cognitive responses, and how it would affect their buying behaviours. A prototype of an application to assist consumers inside a supermarket was developed using HoloLens glasses. A total of 85 participants were invited to walk-through the store using augmented reality glasses. A PLS-SEM approach was used to test the conceptual model. Results using different scenarios show that media richness (the level of information cues, variety and immediate feedback) impacts consumer decisions and heightens their cognitive and emotional responses. The current study finds that a media-rich augmented reality experience influences brand engagement and willingness to buy through perceived information quality and brand attitudes. At a time when managers in every industry work to capture consumers’ attention, the present study shows how content remains important in every communication activity, even in an innovative augmented reality retail shopping experience. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

Objectives: We examined the association between obesity and early-onset cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS) and whether fat distribution or sex altered this association. Materials and Methods: This prospective, multi-center, case-control study included 345 patients, aged 18-49 years, with first-ever, acute CIS. The control group included 345 age- and sex-matched stroke-free individuals. We measured height, weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference. Obesity metrics analyzed included body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-stature ratio (WSR), and a body shape index (ABSI). Models were adjusted for age, level of education, vascular risk factors, and migraine with aura. Results: After adjusting for demographics, vascular risk factors, and migraine with aura, the highest tertile of WHR was associated with CIS (OR for highest versus lowest WHR tertile 2.81, 95%CI 1.43-5.51; P=0.003). In sex-specific analyses, WHR tertiles were not associated with CIS. However, using WHO WHR cutoff values (>0.85 for women, >0.90 for men), abdominally obese women were at increased risk of CIS (OR 2.09, 95%CI 1.02-4.27; P=0.045). After adjusting for confounders, WC, BMI, WSR, or ABSI were not associated with CIS. Conclusions: Abdominal obesity measured with WHR was an independent risk factor for CIS in young adults after rigorous adjustment for concomitant risk factors. © 2022 The Author(s)

In central Brazil, there are strong gradients and discontinuities in vegetation structure and composition between the forests of southern Amazonia and the open savannas of South America's Cerrado. These transitions are often controlled by disturbance processes, and the ability of vegetation to respond to climatic and environmental changes may depend on the regeneration traits of the different floras present. In this study we aim to assess the regeneration traits of tree communities of the Amazon-Cerrado transition and to understand how they differ among and within the markedly different vegetation types. We sampled 39 one-hectare long-term monitoring plots that include typical cerrado (TC = 10), cerradão (CD = 3), gallery forests (GF = 3), floodplain forests (FF = 6), seasonal and open rainforests (SF = 17). The regeneration traits assessed included dispersal syndrome (zoochory, anemochory, and autochory), fruit consistency (dry and fleshy), number of seeds per fruit, and diaspore dimensions (width and length). We found differences among the vegetation types, in all regeneration traits. These tended to be aggregate by vegetation structure, being similar for cerrado and cerradão species, and similar for SF, FF and GF (more forested vegetation). Vegetation types did not differ in functional diversity, however, while regeneration traits among seasonal and open rainforests were well-dispersed, in floodplain forests they were more clustered. Tree species depend substantially on fauna (zoochoric species between 42 and 86% in vegetation) for the dispersal across all habitats. By considering regeneration traits in the study of tree recruitment and establishment, we will increase our understanding about the dynamics of tree communities in neotropical forests and savannas.

The goal of this study was to compare the growth performance of growing/finishing pigs housed in a hoop barn system and in traditional confinement. A total of twenty B?saro breed pigs, with 98.6?5.71 days of age, and 25.4?4.87 kg of BW were used (beginning of experiment). The pigs were equally distributed in two groups: Gr1 ? hoop barn (3.0 m2/pig) with outdoor access (200 m2/pig); and Gr2 - traditional confinement with straw bedding (1.8 m2/pig). Both groups were fed with the same diet. During the next 98 days? period (growing phase) and until pigs reached approximately 80 kg LW, the animals were fed with a concentrate diet. In the finishing phase consisting of a final 70 days period until slaughter, the animals reached between 110-120 kg LW and were fed with concentrate and cornflour. The feed intake per group was registered daily and growth performances were collected every two weeks. During the growing phase no differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the average daily gain (ADG) between Gr1 (0.546?0.10 kg/day) and Gr2 (0.563?0.05 kg/day). However, a higher variability was observed in hoop barn group (CV of 18.1% vs. 8.8% in confinement). Similar results were observed during the finishing phase with ADG of 0.535?0.09 kg for Gr1 and 0.505?0.07 kg for Gr2 (P > 0.05). In both growing and finishing phases, the feed conversion rates (FCR) were 3.11 on the Gr1 versus 3.12 kg/kg on the Gr2, and 3.44 in Gr1 versus 3.53 in Gr2, respectively. Despite the different housing systems, ADG and FCR per period were identical in both systems. To the consumer's point of view, the positive aspects of the hoop barn system, such as the use of uncultivated land, product image and pig welfare, are sustainably attractive and therefore could be further reflected in the market. Para tanto, foi realizado um planejamento fatorial com três parâmetros de síntese: temperatura, tempo e concentração de Cu2+, variando em dois níveis (mínimo e máximo), resultando em uma análise combinatória, em que cada experimento consistiu em uma configuração diferente dos fatores em seus respectivos níveis, o que levou a uma batelada de 23 = 8 experiências, para cada contraíon. Foram também realizadas sínteses com valores médios de cada parâmetro de reação, totalizando 9 sínteses para cada contraíon. O rendimento do produto da reação foi a variável resposta do planejamento fatorial. Os produtos foram caracterizados por espectroscopia de absorção vibracional na região do infravermelho, análise termogravimétrica e difração de raios X de pó. As técnicas analíticas confirmaram a obtenção de MOF-199. A temperatura nas sínteses com cloreto de Cu2+ foi a única variável significativa nos rendimentos de reação. As sínteses realizadas com acetato de Cu2+ proporcionaram rendimentos mais elevados em comparação ao cloreto de Cu2+, embora as condições de síntese não tenham sido significativas.

Peripheral nerves have the intrinsic capacity of self-regeneration after traumatic injury but the extent of the regeneration is often very poor. Increasing evidence demonstrates that mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) may play an important role in tissue regeneration through the secretion of soluble trophic factors that enhance and assist in repair by paracrine activation of surrounding cells. In the present study, the therapeutic value of a population of umbilical cord tissue-derived MSCs, obtained by a proprietary method (UCX®), was evaluated on end-to-end rat sciatic nerve repair. Furthermore, in order to promote both, end-to-end nerve fiber contacts and MSC cell-cell interaction, as well as reduce the flush away effect of the cells after administration, a commercially available haemostatic sealant, Floseal®, was used as vehicle. Both, functional and morphologic recoveries were evaluated along the healing period using extensor postural thrust (EPT), withdrawal reflex latency (WRL), ankle kinematics analysis, and either histological analysis or stereology, in the hyper-acute, acute and chronic phases of healing. The histological analysis of the hyper-acute and acute phase studies revealed that in the group treated with UCX ® alone the Wallerian degeneration was improved for the subsequent process of regeneration, the fiber organization was higher, and the extent of fibrosis was lower. The chronic phase experimental groups revealed that treatment with UCX® induced an increased number of regenerated fibers and thickening of the myelin sheet. Kinematics analysis showed that the ankle joint angle determined for untreated animals was significantly different from any of the treated groups at the instant of initial contact (IC). At opposite toe off (OT) and heel rise (HR), differences were found between untreated animals and the groups treated with either UCX® alone or UCX® administered with Floseal®. Overall, the UCX® application presented positive effects in functional and morphologic recovery, in both the acute and chronic phases of the regeneration process. Kinematics analysis has revealed positive synergistic effects brought by Floseal® as vehicle for MSCs.

Introdução: Os tumores dos anexos cutâneos representam um grupo heterogéneo de neoplasias benignas e malignas com diferentes diferenciações morfológicas. Material e Métodos: Foi efectuado o estudo retrospectivo dos tumores dos anexos cutâneos diagnosticados na consulta externa do Serviço de Dermatologia do Centro Hospitalar do Porto, EPE-HSA entre 2000 a 2009. Resultados: Foram diagnosticados 404 tumores dos anexos cutâneos. Apenas 3% dos tumores eram malignos. A maioria apresentou uma diferenciação (62,6 %) folicular. Discussão: A revisão da literatura mostrou uma escassez de dados relativos a estudos retrospectivos dos tumores dos anexos cutâneos. Mais estudos são necessários para uma melhor caracterização epidemiológica destas entidades.

Carine & Schaefer (Journal of Biogeography, 2010, 37, 77–89) suggest that the lack of past climate oscillations in the Azores may have contributed to the low plant endemism in this archipelago compared to that of the Canary Islands, a pattern they term the Azorean diversity enigma. Here we challenge their hypothesis, and discuss how the particular characteristics of the Azores may have driven current diversification patterns in this archipelago. We argue that the restricted number of Azorean endemic species and their wide distribution is explicable by the geological, geographical and ecological attributes of the archipelago. That is, the Azores are too young, too small, and too environmentally homogeneous to have hosted many in situ diversification events, so they do not host as many endemic species as other Macaronesian archipelagos, such as Madeira and especially the Canary Islands.

A 6-year-old Lusitano stallion was referred to our centre due to an enlarged left testicle. Anamnesis indicated that the stallion had a chronic hypertrophy of the left testicle, with no apparent ill effect on work (dressage training) or semen production. Prolonged use of anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics were probable. Upon examination of the animal, it was found that clinical signs were compatible with chronic testicular degeneration or fibrosis. Ultrasound scanning did not evidence the exuberant macroscopic lesions seen upon hemicastration of the left testicle, but it showed in the left spermatic cord a conspicuous absence of the typical hypoechogenic areas representing the pampiniform plexus. Swabbing of the penis, prepuce, and distal urethra resulted in the isolation of Rhodococcus equi and Corynebacterium spp. However, histopathological examination did not support infectious orchitis as cause of the lesions and no bacterial growth was obtained from swabbing of the parenchyma in the excised testicle. Histopathological findings were compatible with chronic orchitis with fibrosis and necrosis, probably secondary to ischemia of the testicular parenchyma. After hemi-castration, the stallion resumed semen production at acceptable levels.

The objective of this work was to examine its prevalence, clinical presentation, prognosis, and functional features on scintigraphy in a group of patients with no significant atherosclerotic coronary disease. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 7039 consecutive cardiac angiograms performed between January 1994 and December 2004, selecting cases in which MB was not accompanied by significant coronary disease (defined as luminal stenosis > 50%), valvular heart disease or cardiomyopathy. Patient characteristics such as age, gender, vascular risk factors and clinical presentation were recorded. We then contacted these patients by telephone to determine cardiovascular events since diagnosis (hospitalization, infarction, death) or symptoms of angina, and to invite them for myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) with stress testing. RESULTS: The prevalence of MB was 0.97% (68 patients). The study population without significant coronary disease, valvular heart disease or cardiomyopathy was composed of 31 subjects, mean age 51.45 +/- 13.77 years, 94% (29 patients) male. Clinical presentations were: non-ST elevation acute coronary syndromes with or without biomarkers of necrosis 34% (14 patients), stable angina 23% (7 patients), atypical chest pain 16% (5 patients), ST-elevation myocardial infarction 13% (4 patients), other 3% (1 patient). Left ventricular function was normal in all patients, and angiography showed MB of the left anterior descending artery, 63% (19 patients) in the mid portion, and 33% (12 patients) in the distal portion. All subjects were treated medically. We were able to contact 24 (77%) of the 31 patients, all of whom underwent MPS; mean time since angiography was 61.25 months, with no cardiovascular events (hospitalization, infarction, death) or symptomatic angina. MPS only identified three patients with findings consistent with anterior wall ischemia. CONCLUSIONS: In this series, 58% of the patients with MB and no significant atherosclerotic coronary disease presented with acute coronary syndromes. In all the subjects contacted, the prognosis had been good during the time since diagnosis. In the majority of them, no signs of ischemia were detected on MPS. A erisipela é uma infecção dermo-hipodérmica aguda, não necrosante, geralmente causada pelo estreptococo β–hemolítico do grupo A. Em mais de 80% dos casos situa-se nos membros inferiores e são factores predisponentes a existência de solução de continuidade na pele, o linfedema crónico e a obesidade. O seu diagnóstico é essencialmente clínico e baseia-se na presença de placa inflamatória associada a febre,linfangite, adenopatia e leucocitose. Os exames bacteriológicos têm baixa sensibilidade ou positividade tardia. Nos casos atípicos é importante o diagnóstico diferencial com a fasceíte necrosante e a trombose venosa profunda. A penicilina continua a ser o antibiótico de referência, embora actualmente diversos fármacos, com propriedades farmacodinâmicas mais favoráveis, possam ser utilizados. A recidiva constitui a complicação mais frequente, sendo fundamental o correcto tratamento dos factores de risco.

In Portugal, piroxicam is one of the most prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) and is frequently associated to photosensitivity skin reactions, well known by all dermatologists. The authors review the physiopathology and clinical patterns of this adverse drug reaction. Importance is given to the high prevalence of thimerosal sensitisation in our country, a marker of piroxicam photosensitivity. The authors propose that piroxicam prescription should be avoided in Portugal, as this drug can be substituted by any other NSAID, without marked photosensitivity.

The notion of linear finite transducer (LFT) plays a crucial role in some cryptographic systems. In this paper we present a way to get an approximate value, by random sampling, for the number of non-equivalent injective LFTs. By introducing a recurrence relation to count canonical LFTs, we show how to estimate the percentage of $\tau$-injective LFTs. Several experimental results are presented, which by themselves constitute an important step towards the evaluation of the key space of those systems.
