The processing of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus has attracted interest due to its health benefits. In this work, an emerging blanching technology, called hot-air flow rolling dry-blanching (HMRDB), was employed to treat A. sessiliflorus before drying. The effects of varied blanching times (2–8 min) on enzyme inactivation, drying characteristics, bioactive compound retention, and microstructure were examined. The results demonstrated that blanching for 8 min rendered polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase nearly inactive. The blanching process reduced the drying time of samples by up to 57.89% compared to an unblanched sample. The Logarithmic model showed good fitting performance for the drying curves. The total phenolic and flavonoid content of the dried product increased as blanching time increased. The total anthocyanin content of the samples blanched for 6 min was 3.9 times higher than that of the unblanched samples, and 8 min of blanching produced the greatest DPPH• and ABTS• scavenging capabilities. The retention of active compounds in a dried product is a result of the inactivation of enzymes and a reduced drying period. Changes in the porous structure of the blanched samples would be responsible for the accelerated drying rate, according to microstructural analysis. These results indicate that HMRDB enhances the drying process and improves drying quality when applied to A. sessiliflorus before drying.

Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (Araliaceae) have been reported to exhibit many pharmacological activities. Our preliminary study suggested that A. sessiliflorus fruits include many bioactive 3,4-seco-triterpenoids. A. sessiliflorus fruits were extracted in aqueous EtOH and fractionated into EtOAc, n-BuOH, and H2O fractions. Repeated column chromatographies for the organic fractions led to the isolation of 3,4-seco-triterpenoid glycosides, including new compounds. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) mass spectrometry (MS) systems were used for quantitation and quantification. BV2 and RAW264.7 cells were induced by LPS, and the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators and their underlying mechanisms were measured by ELISA and Western blotting. NMR, IR, and HR-MS analyses revealed the chemical structures of the nine noble 3,4-seco-triterpenoid glycosides, acanthosessilioside G–O, and two known ones. The amounts of the compounds were 0.01–2.806 mg/g, respectively. Acanthosessilioside K, L, and M were the most effective in inhibiting NO, PGE2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 production and reducing iNOS and COX-2 expression. In addition, it had inhibitory effects on the LPS-induced p38 and ERK MAPK phosphorylation in both BV2 and RAW264.7 cells. Nine noble 3,4-seco-triterpenoid glycosides were isolated from A. sessiliflorus fruits, and acanthosessilioside K, L, and M showed high anti-inflammatory and anti-neuroinflammatory effects.

Objective The demands for measures to improve disease resistance and productivity of livestock are increasing, as most countries prohibit the addition of antibiotics to feed. This study therefore aimed to uncover functional feed additives to help enhance livestock immunity and disease resistance, using Acanthopanax sessiliflorus fruit extract (ASF). Methods ASF was extracted with 70% EtOH, and total polyphenolic and catechin contents were measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu and vanillin assay, respectively. The 3D4/31 porcine macrophage cells (MΦ) were activated by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), and cell survival and growth rate were measured with or without ASF treatment. Flow-cytometric analysis determined the lysosomal activity, reactive oxygen species levels (ROS), and cell cycle distribution. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) protein expression levels were quantified by western blotting and densitometry analysis. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was applied to measure the lipid metabolism-related genes expression level. Lastly, the antibacterial activity of 3D4/31 MΦ cells was evaluated by the colony forming unit assay. Results ASF upregulated the cell viability and growth rate of 3D4/31 MΦ, with or without PMA activation. Moreover, lysosomal activity and intracellular ROS levels were increased after ASF exposure. In addition, the antioxidant enzyme SOD2 expression levels were proportionately increased with ROS levels. Both ASF and PMA treatment resulted in upregulation of NF-κB protein, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α mRNA expression levels, lipid synthesis, and fatty acid oxidation metabolism. Interestingly, co-treatment of ASF with PMA resulted in recovery of NF-κB, TNFα, and lipid metabolism levels. Finally, ASF pretreatment enhanced the in vitro bactericidal activity of 3D4/31 MΦ against Escherichia coli. Conclusion This study provides a novel insight into the regulation of NF-κB activity and lipid metabolism in MΦ, and we anticipate that ASF has the potential to be effective as a feed additive to enhance livestock immunity.

A rich of 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids including chiisanoside (CSS), divaroside (DVS), sessiloside-A1 (SSA) and chiisanogenin (CSG) were isolated from the ethanol extract of the leaves of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus. On the basis of previous studies, this article focused on four important components of 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids in Acanthopanax sessiliflorus leaves and explored their protective effects against aconitine-induced cardiomyocyte injury and their molecular mechanisms. The results showed that pretreatment with 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids could effectively increase cell viability, reduce CK-MB and LDH activities, reduce ROS production, maintain calcium concentration balance, and inhibit apoptosis, with divaroside having the best effect. In addition, Western blot results showed that divaroside down-regulated Cleaved caspase-3 and Bax and up-regulated Bcl-2 expression through activating the PI3 K/AKT pathway. However, the LY294002 inhibitor reversed this situation. This suggests that 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenoids may be a new hotspot for potential myocardial protective drugs research.

Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Seem. (Araliaceae) is one of the most abundant species of genus Acanthopanax. The fruits of A. sessiliflorus are used in traditional medical protocols as an analgesic, tonic, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and immune-stimulating agent. In this work, we carried out a comprehensive investigation into the anthocyanin components in the fruits of A. sessiliflorus. The anthocyanin content in the fresh fruits of A. sessiliflorus was determined by high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC/DAD), and the anthocyanin component was isolated from these using high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) and elucidated by electro-spray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI/MS), 1H- and 13C-NMR. Its antioxidant activity was evaluated by ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). We found that A. sessiliflorus contained a gross anthocyanin content of 121.35 mg/100 g. HSCCC was successfully used for separation and purification of the primary anthocyanin component, cyanidin 3-xylosyl-galactoside. The antioxidant and radical scavenging tests indicated that cyanidin 3-xylosyl-galactoside is a potent antioxidant.

Recently, lipidomics has revealed that many diseases are highly associated with altered lipid metabolism, as in the case of hypertension affecting serum lipid metabolism. In this study, an LC&ndash, MS-based lipidomic approach was used to profile serum lipids in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) treated with an extract of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus fruits (ASF), to elucidate the serum lipid metabolism alteration by hypertension and the treatment of a drug or ASF. First, UPLC-QTOF/MS profiled a total of 208 lipids from six pooled samples of normal controls, SHR, SHR + 100 mg/kg of drug, and SHR + ASF 200, 400, or 600 mg/kg. These six groups were differentiated by the PCA and sPLS&ndash, DA, and 120 lipid species were identified as differentially regulated lipids (DRLs) by ANOVA (p values &lt, 0.05). Second, UPLC&ndash, QqQ/MS was used for the target profiling of 120 DRLs from individual samples of the six groups. Using an ANOVA, 67 lipids (38 TGs, 4 DGs, 17 PCs, 2 PEs, and 6 LPCs) were selected as validated DRLs. The mostly altered lipids, such as TG (62:13), TG (60:13), PC (34:4), PC (36:5), and PC (38:2), were decreased in SHR compared to the normal control, and received little by treatment with ASF. These results demonstrated the correlation between hypertension and serum lipid metabolism. Furthermore, both drug and ASF treatment similarly altered the lipid profiles of SHRs. Finally, we found that DRLs have the potential to help us to interpret the lipid metabolism of hypertension.

Aminobutyric acid (GABA) content in fermented plant products and their main plant materials (aerial part of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus, fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida, and whole plant of Morus alba) was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. GABA was quantified using a reverse-phase column with a gradient elution program (water:acetonitrile =90:10 to 0:100 for 40 min). UV detection was conducted at 280 nm. GABA content was measured in fermented plant products (15.07 mg/g), aerial part of A. sessiliflorus (4.49 mg/g), fruit of C. pinnatifida (10.59 mg/g), and whole plant of M. alba (2.31 mg/g). The presence of GABA in fermented plant products, including A. sessiliflorus, C. pinnatifida, and M. alba is important in industrial application for health supplements.

Acanthopanax sessiliflorus, a small woody shrub has traditionally been referred to have anticancer activity, but it has not been scientifically explored so far. Therefore, to investigate the anticancer effects of A. sessiliflorus stem bark extracts (ASSBE), MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 human breast cancer cells were treated with one of its bioactive fractions, n-hexane (ASSBE-nHF). Cytotoxicity (24h) was determined by MTT assay and antiproliferative effect was assessed by counting cell numbers after 72h treatment using hemocytometer. The role of ASSBE-nHF on apoptosis was analysed by annexin V-FITC/PI, Hoechst 33342 staining, DNA fragmentation pattern and immunoblotting of apoptosis markers. For the assay of enhanced production of ROS and mitochondrial membrane depolarization, specific stains such as DCFH-DA and JC-1 were used, respectively. To understand the mode of action of ASSBE-nHF on MCF-7 cells, cells were pre-treated with antioxidant, n-acetylcysteine. The hexane fraction of ASSBE showed maximum activity towards human breast cancer cells compared to other two fractions at a minimal concentration of 50μg/ml. The annexin V-FITC/PI, Hoechst 33342 staining, DNA fragmentation and immunoblotting assays showed that ASSBE-nHF induces non-apoptotic cell death in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells. ASSBE-nHF significantly increased the production of ROS and decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in MCF-7 cells. Similarly, it decreased the MMP in MDA-MB-231 cells, but had no effect on ROS production. Further, the cytotoxic effect of ASSBE-nHF in MCF-7 cells was not significantly reversed even in the presence of n-acetylcysteine, an antioxidant. These findings revealed that ASSBE-nHF induces non-apoptotic cell death via mitochondria associated with both ROS dependent and independent pathways in human breast cancer cells.

BACKGROUND The potential of the protein–polyphenol interaction was applied to crosslinking reinforced protein networks in gluten-free rice noodles. Specifically, inter-component interaction between soy protein isolate and extract of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus fruit (ogaja) was examined with a view to improving its quality. RESULTS In a components-interacting model system, a mixture of soy protein isolate (SPI) and ogaja extract (OE) induced a drastic increase in absorbance at 660 nm by haze formation, while the major anthocyanin of ogaja, cyanidin-3-O-sambubioside, sparsely interacted with SPI or gelatin. Individual or combined treatment of SPI and OE on rice dough decreased all the viscosity parameters in rapid visco analysis. However, SPI-OE treatment significantly increased all the texture parameters of rice dough derived from Mixolab® analysis (P < 0.05). Incorporation of SPI in rice dough significantly reduced endothermic ΔH, and SPI–OE treatment further decreased this value. SPI–OE interaction significantly increased the tensile properties of cooked noodle and decreased 53.7% of cooking loss compared to the untreated rice noodle. CONCLUSION SPI–OE treatment caused a considerable reinforcement of the network as shown by reducing cooking loss and suggested the potential for utilizing protein–polyphenol interaction for gluten-free rice noodle production. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry

Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (Rupr. & Maxim.) Seem., which belongs to the Araliaceae family, mainly inhabits Korea, China, and Japan. Traditionally, Acanthopanax species have been used as treatment for several diseases such as diabetes, tumors, and rheumatoid arthritis. Especially, its fruits have many biological functions including antitumor, immunostimulating, antithrombosis, and antiplatelet activities. Recently, the extract of A. sessiliflorus fruit has been reported to have antithrombotic and antiplatelet activities related to the alleviation of hypertension. Therefore, we investigated the antihypertensive effect of ethanolic extract from A. sessiliflorus fruits (DHP1501) through in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro studies. In this study, DHP1501 demonstrated free radical scavenging capacity, enhanced endothelial nitric oxide (NO) production, and inhibited angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), resulting in the improvement of vascular relaxation and decrease in blood pressure in the hypertensive animal model. These results suggest that A. sessiliflorus fruit extract may be a promising functional material for the prevention and treatment of hypertension. Furthermore, this study demonstrated the utility of MS-based active compounds for the quality control of DHP1501.

Anthocyanins microcapsules from Acanthopanax.sessiliflorus (Rupr. et Maxim.) Seem were prepared by Spray-Drying, using maltodextrin and gum arabic as wall materials. The stability and releasing property of anthocyanins microcapsules were studied. Using the retention rate as evaluation index, the effects of temperature, light, pH and metal ions on the stability of microcapsules and anthocyanins during 30 days storage were assessed, and samples were taken every five days. Results show that the microcapsules have greater storage stability against temperature, light, pH and metal ions. Using the release rate as evaluation index, the effect of releasing of microcapsules was evaluated, and samples were taken every 30min. Results show that the microcapsules have certain slow-release effect.

Sessiline is an alkaloid which is recently isolated from the fruits of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus. The molecule contains two five-membered heterocyclic units joined together by an acylaminocarbinol-ether type bond. Here, we describe the first, simple synthesis of sessiline from 5-hydroxypyrrolidin-2-one and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which are prepared from succinimide and furfuryl alcohol, respectively. The coupling reaction takes place on moderate heating under neat conditions.

На основе анализа 17 генов, кодирующих аллозимное разнообразие 12 ферментных систем, получены данные о генетической изменчивости реликта третичной флоры, ценного лекарственного растения Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (Rupr. et Maxim.) Seem. (Araliaceae) на российской части ареала. Показатели полиморфизма в среднем по популяциям имеют довольно высокие значения (P95 = 42.4%, A = 1.55, Ho = 0.211, He = 0.168), сопоставимые с известными данными для популяций A. sessiliflorus с п-ова Корея. Уровень генетического разнообразия и характер его распределения между популяциями отражают взаимодействие нескольких факторов, среди которых наиболее важными являются историческое прошлое вида, дрейф генов и пластичность системы размножения. Полученные данные могут служить основой для сохранения генетических ресурсов дальневосточных видов аралиевых.

As malfunction/absence of immune cells causes a variety of immunosuppressive disorders and chemical synthetic drugs for curing these diseases have many adverse effects, vigorous studies are being conducted. The Acanthopanax family has been used as traditional medicines for gastric ulcer, diabetes, etc. and culinary materials in East-South Asia. In this study, the immunostimulating properties of A. sessiliflorus were evaluated. A. sessiliflorus increased not only the splenocyte number but also immune-related cytokines such as TNF-α. However, it could not upregulate the expressions of IFN-γ and IL-2. A. sessiliflorus increased the swimming time, and comparison of organ weights relative to body weights for immune-related organs such as the spleen and thymus after a forced swim test showed that it could recover the spleen and thymus weights. It also increased the expression of TNF-α and slightly increased the concentration of IFN-γ but not IL-2. From the results, we concluded that as A. sessiliflorus has not only a host defense effect but also a stress-ameliorating property, further study it will be a promising material of immunostimulating material.

Three new acyclic monoterpenoids named (2E)-3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-dienoate-6-O-a-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1®6)-b-D-glucopyranoside (1), (3Z,6E)-3,7-dimethyl-3,6-octadiene-1,2,8-triol (2) and (6E)-7-methyl-3-methylene-6-octene-1,2,8-triol (3) were isolated from Acanthopanax sessiliflorus fruits, along with three known monoterpenoid compounds. The structures of the new compounds were determined by means of extensive spectroscopic analysis (1D, 2D NMR and HRESIMS) and chemical methods.

The fruits of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus Seeman(Araliaceae) were extracted with 70% aqueous ethanol at roomtemperature. The concentrated extract was partitioned with ethylacetate (EtOAc), n-butyl alcohol, and H 2 O, successively. From theEtOAc fraction, two compounds were isolated through therepeated silica gel, octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20column chromatographies. According to the results of physico-chemical and spectroscopic data including NMR, mass spectrometry,and infrared spectroscopy, the chemical structures of thecompounds were determined as 3,5-dihydroxycinnamic acid (1)and protocatechuic acid (2). Compound 1 was isolated from thefruits of A. sessiliflirus Seeman for the first time. A new lignan, named acanthosessilin A (1), as well as eight known lignan and lignan glycosides 2-9 were isolated from an ethanolic extract of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus fruits. The chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods, including HR-EIMS, 1D NMR (1H, 13C, DEPT), 2D NMR (gCOSY, gHSQC, gHMBC, NOESY), and IR spectroscopy. All isolated compounds were tested for the ability to inhibit LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW264.7 macrophages.

Department of Food Science and Technology, Chungbuk National UniversityAbstract This study was carried out in order to investigate the functional properties of 50% methanol extracts from fourparts (root, stem, leaf and fruit) of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus by means of measuring the contents of eleutheroside B, E,and total polyphenols as well as determining electron donating ability (EDA), nitrite scavenging ability (NSA), andanticancer activity. The highest contents of eleutheroside B and E were found in the fruit (538.99 µg/g) and the stem(556.00 µg/g). The root extract demonstrated the highest polyphenol content (2.97 mg/g). EDA of the stem and rootextracts were 90.21% and 85.71%. All of the extracts showed 81.5-93.0% of NSA at pH 1.2. In addition all extractsindicated no cytotoxicity to normal cell line (DC2.4). The root extract had a 23% inhibitory effect against the stomachcancer cell line (SNU-719). 오가피(Acanthopanax sessiliflorus Seeman) 열매 10.0 kg을 실 온에서 70% EtOH 수용액으로 추출하고 이 추출물을 ethyl acetate (EtOAC) 분획, n-butyl alcohol 분획, H2O 분획으로 나 누었다. EtOAc 분획에 대하여 silica gel 및 octadecyl silica gel chromatography column chromatography를 반복 실시하여 4종의 화합물을 분리, 정제하였다. NMR, IR, EI/MS, 및 GC/ MS 등을 통하여 화합물 1(stigmasterol), 화합물 2(linoleic acid), 화합물 3(β-sitosterol), 화합물 4(stigmast-5-en-3β,7β-diol) 의 구조를 결정하였다.

Chiisanoside is the main component of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus leaves. Simultaneous administration of chiisanoside resulted in a decrease in the plasma TG level and increase of undigested TG in the intestinal lumen after oil gavage to mice. This suggests that chiisanoside has the potential to prevent obesity as a lipase inhibitor which suppresses fat absorption in vivo.

Three known saponins, chiisanoside, 11-deoxyisochiisanoside, and isochiisanoside, and one novel saponin, 3,4-seco-4(23),20(29)-lupadiene-3,28-dioic acid 28-O-alpha-l-rhamnopyranosyl (1-->4)-beta-d-glucopyranosyl (1-->6)-beta-d-glucopyranoside, referred to as sessiloside, were isolated from a hot water extract of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus leaves. All of these saponins were lupane-type triterpene triglycosides, and their concentrations were 4.1, 1.0, 0.5, and 0.4% (w/w) of the total extract, respectively. Sessiloside and chiisanoside inhibited pancreatic lipase activity in vitro, and addition of the saponin-rich fraction to a high-fat diet suppressed the body weight gain of mice. The possibility of application of the lupane-type saponins from A. sessiliflorus leaves to the treatment of obesity is discussed.

To establish the optimum condition for plant regeneration from somatic embryos of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus Rupr. et Maxim, a medicinal plant, somatic embryos were induced from zygotic embryo-derived embryogenic callus in hormoen-free MS medium. To induce plantlet conversion, cotyledonary somatic embryos were cultured on MS solid medium with GAat various concentrations (0~10 mg/L) for three weeks. Plantlets were transferred to 1/3 MS solid medium with 0.5% charcoal for 7 weeks. Stem length was increased proportionally to the concentration and treatment period of GA. Also, the highest leaf width (8.9 mm) and leaf number (2.84) of plantlet were obtained when plantlets were converted on 5,10 mg/L GApretreatments, respectively. The highest plant conversion frequency (66.7%) was obtained when the somatic embryos were cultured on medium containing 5 mg/L GA for 3 weeks and then were transferred to 1/3 MS medium with 0.5% charcoal. The highest survival rate of soil transfer was 90% when plantlets were regenerated on medium with 5 mg/L GA for 3 weeks and then transferred to plastic pots containing vermiculite and sand mixture for 4 weeks.

A simple and accurate liquid chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous determination of six constituents in the fruit of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus. The conditions of sample extraction were optimised by using orthogonal design. The method provided good accuracy with recoveries in the range of 95.6–101.6% and good precision with RSD values less than 3.0%, which has been successfully applied to the quantitative determination of the six compounds in the fruit of A. sessiliflorus from two maturation periods.

Eight new 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenes and glycosides, acanthosessiligenins I and II (1, 3) and acanthosessiliosides A-F (2, 4-8), as well as six known 3,4-seco-lupane triterpenes (9-14) were isolated from an ethanolic extract of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus fruits. The chemical structures of 1-8 were determined by spectroscopic data interpretation. All isolated compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against six human cancer cell lines and their ability to inhibit LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Six compounds were isolated from the fruits of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus. Their structures were elucidated as (-)-sesamin, scoparone, protocatechuic acid, ursolic acid, hyperin and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by physicochemical and spectroscopic analysis. Among them, scoparone, ursolic acid and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were isolated for the first time from Acanthopanax species.

The structures of six new hydroxy fatty acids from the hydroxyacyldiacylglycerols of the fruit ofAcanthopanax sessiliflorus (Rupr. et amaxim.) Seem. (family Araliaceae have been established as 6-hydroxyhexadeca-12Z-enoic, 6-hydroxyhexadeca-9Z,12Z-dienoic, and the isomeric 6- and 7-hydroxyoctadeca-12-Z-enoic, and 6- and 7-hydroxyoctadeca-9Z,12Z-dienoic acids and their quantitative amounts have been determined with the aid of spectral, chromatographic, and chemical methods of analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Acanthopanax sessiliflorus is a native Korean plant and used as a traditional medicine or an ingredient in many Korean foods. The free radical theory of aging suggests that cellular oxidative stress caused by free radicals is the main cause of aging. Free radicals can be removed by cellular anti-oxidants. MATERIALS/METHODS: Here, we examined the anti-oxidant activity of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus extract both in vitro and in vivo. Survival of nematode C. elegans under stress conditions was also compared between control and Acanthopanax sessiliflorus extract-treated groups. Then, anti-aging effect of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus extract was monitored in C. elegans. RESULTS: Stem extract significantly reduced oxidative DNA damage in lymphocyte, which was not observed by leaves or root extract. Survival of C. elegans under oxidative-stress conditions was significantly enhanced by Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem extract. In addition, Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem increased resistance to other environmental stresses, including heat shock and ultraviolet irradiation. Treatment with Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem extract significantly extended both mean and maximum lifespan in C. elegans. However, fertility was not affected by Acanthopanax sessiliflorus stem. CONCLUSION: Different parts of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus have different bioactivities and stem extract have strong anti-oxidant activity in both rat lymphocytes and C. elegans, and conferred a longevity phenotype without reduced reproduction in C. elegans, which provides conclusive evidence to support the free radical theory of aging.

After SO2 fumigation, Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora maintained high net photosynthetic rate (P N) and did not show visible symptoms of damage. In contrast, Populus alba×glandulosa and Acanthopanax sessiliflorus had significantly reduced P N and showed visible necrosis.
