The total/partial oil change treatment can affect the furfural partitioning in oil-paper-pressboard insulation, resulting in poor accuracy of furfural analysis. Moreover, due to the high cost of total oil change, partial oil change is more practical during transformer operation. This paper investigates the furfural partitioning in the oil-paper-pressboard insulation under partial oil change conditions. First, the initial furfural partitioning equation with non-oil change is proposed based on the obtained furfural content in oil, paper, and pressboard. Then, the modified furfural partitioning model under partial oil change condition is established by introducing a correction factor. Moreover, a preliminary correction scheme for the furfural partitioning model considering the influence of moisture and acid is provided. Finally, furfural content in oil-Kraft paper and oil-thermally upgraded Kraft (TUK) paper insulation are discussed, and results indicate that the proposed modified furfural partitioning model is not suitable for the oil-TUK paper insulation. This work can provide theoretical support for furfural analysis of oil-immersed transformers.

Free-standing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) papers were prepared by chemical reduction, thermal reduction and combined chemical-thermal reduction, respectively. Four-point probe and nanoindentation experiments were conducted to investigate the electrical and mechanical properties of rGO papers. The rGO paper prepared by soaking in L-ascorbic acid and thermal annealing in argon at 1000 °C (labeled rGO-AsA-T) showed superior electrical and mechanical properties when compared with rGO papers prepared merely by chemical reduction or thermal reduction. The as-prepared rGO-AsA-T paper exhibited an electrical conductivity of 5.7 × 104 S/m, showing an increase of 90% compared to that in the thermally annealed rGO paper and nearly 40 times that of rGO paper reduced by L-ascorbic acid. It was also found that the rGO-AsA-T paper had the lowest elastic modulus of 288 MPa, showing enhanced flexibility. The nearly free voids in rGO-AsA-T paper proved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were due to the capillary action in chemical reduction and were significant in improving the electrical conductivity and flexibility of the paper. The rGO-AsA-T paper with high conductivity and flexibility has a promising application in flexible electronics.

In recent era of modern and bendable technology, energy dearth arises as a paramount subject around the globe with a dire demand of flexible and lightweight energy storage devices. This study targets fabrication of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and utility of abundantly available, cost effective, and environment friendly lignocelluloses (LC) fibers extracted from Carica papaya source, as a binder to bind active material (rGO) as robust and compact paper sheet. Fabricated samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction for crystallographic analysis, Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscope for morphology, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for structural bonding, and Raman spectroscopy for vibrational modes. Robust and bendable rGO/LC paper electrode was tested for energy storage application by employing in different characterizations, i.e., cyclic voltammetry for capacitive behavior, galvanostatic charge–discharge for symmetric EDLC, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for resistive charge kinetics, respectively. rGO/LC composite sheet employed as working electrode in 3-electrode CV measurements and revealed specific capacitance of 591 F/g at a scan rate of 5 mV/s by keeping the undistorted shape of voltammograms at higher scan rates which present it as a suitable candidate for modern flexible and energy storage devices. rGO/LC-based symmetric cell revealed the highest specific capacitance of 228 F/g at applied current density of 0.1 A/g, the energy density of 6.3 Wh/kg, and power density of 129 W/kg, respectively. rGO/LC-based symmetric cell confirmed the cycling stability by revealing capacitance retention of 82% after 200 cycles. It can conclude that biomass-based rGO paper sheet can be a potential candidate as environmentally safe with remarkable electrochemical activity in energy storage applications.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a numerical simulation method based on the transient upstream finite element method (FEM) and Schottky emission theory to reveal the distribution characteristics of space charge in oil-paper insulation. Design/methodology/approach The main insulation medium of the converter transformer in high voltage direct current transmission is oil-paper insulation. However, the influence of space charge is difficult to be fully considered in the insulation design and simulation of converter transformers. To reveal the influence characteristics of the space charge, this paper proposes a numerical simulation method based on Schottky emission theory and the transient upstream FEM. This method considers the influence of factors, such as carrier mobility, carrier recombination coefficient, trap capture coefficient and diffusion coefficient on the basis of multi-physics field coupling calculation of the electric field and fluid field. Findings A numerical simulation method considering multiple charge states is proposed for the space charge problem in oil-paper insulation. Meanwhile, a space charge measurement platform based on the electrostatic capacitance probe method for oil-paper insulation structure is built, and the effectiveness and accuracy of the numerical simulation method is verified. Originality/value A variety of models are calculated and analyzed by the numerical simulation method in this paper, and the distribution characteristics of the space charge and total electric field in oil-paper insulation medium with single-layer, polarity reversal of plate voltage and double-layer are obtained. The research results of this paper have the guiding significance for the engineering application of oil-paper insulation and the optimal design of converter transformer insulation.

The heterocharge accumulated in the oil‐paper insulation system of the converter transformer will enhance the local electric field and cause insulation deterioration. Numerical simulation is an effective method to analyze heterocharge. Currently, the numerical simulation of heterocharge is mainly based on the bipolar charge transport (BCT) model and the impurity ion transport (IIT) model. However, the effects of temperature, conductivity, and thickness of oil‐impregnated paper on charge transport have not been considered in these models. In view of this, a modified charge transport (MCT) model by introducing the Maxwell–Wagner model and heat conduction equation is proposed in this paper based on the BCT model and IIT model. Then, the influence of multi‐factors (temperature gradient, moisture content, and oil‐impregnated paper thickness) on heterocharge accumulation is investigated by using the MCT model. The simulation results obtained by the MCT model are more consistent with the experimental results than the BCT model, which proves the accuracy and superiority of the MCT model. Moreover, the increase in temperature gradient, moisture content, and oil‐impregnated paper thickness will enlarge the ion dissociation rate, conductivity, and trap density, and thus promote the generation of heterocharge. In that respect, the MCT model is expected to optimize the insulation design and provide a reference for space charge dynamic simulation.

Traction transformers are one of the most important equipment in the traction power supply system. Thermal aging of transformer insulation system determines its reliable life. To achieve an estimation of the insulation life of traction power transformers operated under real load condition, the effects of traction loads on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers were investigated. First, the design principles for the accelerated thermal aging experiment were studied and proposed by considering magnitude (i.e., load rate) and frequency (i.e. spare time and lasting time) of the traction load. Then, an experimental system was established in the laboratory to conduct extensive accelerated thermal aging experiments, in which the traction loads were mimicked by using positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heating plates and a programmable logic controller (PLC). Finally, the experimental results were analyzed and discussed to reveal the effects of traction load on the thermal aging of oil-paper insulation in traction transformers.

This paper utilizes a hybrid Debye model to accurately simulate the relaxation response process of the oil‐paper insulation of a transformer to explore the application of frequency domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) in nondestructive diagnosis of the aging condition of oil‐paper insulation. Via FDS test data, the model parameters can be identified, and the influence laws of FDS can be obtained through the variation of model parameters. To explore the effects of insulating paper moisture content, insulating paper layers, and test temperature on FDS characteristics, an FDS experimental platform is established. The results show that the hybrid Debye model can effectively reflect the relaxation response process of oil‐paper insulation under different conditions, as well as that a physical relationship between the model parameters and oil‐paper dielectric polarization exists. In addition, the parameters of the hybrid Debye model can be used as the characteristic quantities for the non‐destructive evaluation of the oil‐paper insulation state, providing new ideas for the non‐destructive evaluation of the oil‐paper insulation state.

This paper presents an improved method for detecting methanol and the concentration of methanol in transformer oil-paper. Acetonitrile is used as an extractant, and methanol is detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Experiments show a linear correlation coefficient of this method that reaches 0.99 and the minimum detected concentration of methanol in transformer oil can be as low as 5.57 μg/L. In order to investigate the relationship between the methanol concentration and the degree of aging of insulating paper, an oil-paper insulation simulation system is designed. The experiment shows that there is a linear relationship between the logarithm of methanol concentration and the degree of polymerization, the linear correlation coefficient is greater than 0.94. An actual oil sample from a transformer is used to show that the method can be used to further study the methanol concentration.

This Editorial introduces a Special Issue of papers from the SEE International Conference RADAR 2019, which took place in Toulon, France, 23–27 September 2019. The papers are expanded versions of ones that were judged in the reviewing process to be of the highest quality and relevance. Benefitting from the unique location of the conference centre on the French Riviera, the conference was given the theme ‘Sensing from sea to space’, attracting nearly 400 attendees from 26 countries from all over the world (Figure 1). Engineers and researchers coming from private or public sector (universities and laboratories) shared their knowledge and experience on radar topics of common interests from physics to signal processing, from sensor validation to system design, and also on emerging technologies based on artificial intelligence; all topics being supported by 200 papers presented either in oral (150 papers in 36 sessions), or poster sessions (50 papers). The photon energy of terahertz waves is of the order of a few milli-electronvolts and is much lower than the thermal energy of ~ 26 meV at room temperature. However, the fast and sensitive detection of terahertz waves is notoriously difficult at ambient conditions. Moreover, the material flexibility is also very important within existing terahertz technologies for development of wearable and portable terahertz devices. We experimentally demonstrate that multiwall carbon nanotube flexible paper (MWCNT-FP) is one of the potential candidates to be used for terahertz detectors at room temperature. For the first time, MWCNT-FP sample is measured over a wide frequency band ranging from 0.02 to 4.5 THz at room temperature as compared to previously reported materials that demonstrate prominent frequency response between 0.2 and 2.5 THz. The MWCNT-FP sample delivered wide band absorption between 0.02 and 4.0 THz. Over the transmission, a high absorption peak is detected at 1.0 THz. The optical density spectrum is observed around 1.25 and 3.37 THz in the low-frequency regime and high-frequency regime, respectively. The present results suggest the potential application of MWCNT-FP as a wearable THz detector.

The unique structural and electrochemical properties of graphene oxide (GO) make it an ideal material for the fabrication of biosensing devices. Therefore, in the present study, graphene oxide nanoparticles modified paper electrodes were used as a low-cost matrix for the development of an amperometric DNA sensor. The graphene oxide was synthesized using the modified hummers method and drop cast on a screen-printed paper electrode (SPPE) to enhance its electrochemical properties. Further, the GO/SPPE electrode was modified with a 5′NH2 labeled ssDNA probe specific to the htrA gene of Orientia tsutsugamushi using carbodiimide cross-linking chemistry. The synthesized GO was characterized using UV-Vis, FTIR, and XRD. The layer-by-layer modification of the paper electrode was monitored via FE-SEM, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The sensor response after hybridization with single-stranded genomic DNA (ssGDNA) of O. tsutsugamushi was recorded using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Methylene blue (1 mM in PBS buffer, pH 7.2) was used as a hybridization indicator and [Fe(CN)6]−3/−4 (2.5 mM in PBS buffer, pH 7.2) as a redox probe during electrochemical measurements. The developed DNA sensor shows excellent sensitivity (1228.4 µA/cm2/ng) and LOD (20 pg/µL) for detection of O. tsutsugamushi GDNA using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV).

Furfural content in oil is widely accepted as an effective parameter to mirror aging of insulation paper. However, pressboards are also abundant in transformers, which are always neglected in furfural analysis. Different masses of insulation paper and pressboard produce different amounts of furfural during the aging process. Thus, the furfural content in oil may differ in systems with different oil-paper-pressboard mass ratios. To address this problem, accelerated thermal aging experiments and furfural equilibrium experiments with different oil-paper-pressboard mass ratio systems were conducted under laboratory conditions. Furfural contents in oil, paper, and pressboard were measured. In a simplified oil-paper system, the furfural content in oil differs in systems with different oil-paper mass ratios. Further analysis shows the furfural amount produced by 1 g insulation paper is the same with good repeatability in groups with different mass ratios. Different oil-paper mass ratios change the distribution coefficient of furfural between oil and paper, and an increase in the mass of insulation paper leads to more furfural remaining in the insulation paper. The pressboards in field transformers produce little furfural during the aging process, but absorb part of the furfural from oil, which decreases the furfural content in oil. Therefore, more pressboard in an oil-paper-pressboard system indicates lower furfural content in oil. An increase in insulation paper in the oil-paper-pressboard system causes a decrease in the effect of pressboard on furfural content in oil.

The construction of flexible electrochemical devices for energy storage and generation is of utmost importance in modern society. In this article, we report on the synthesis of flexible MoS2-based composite paper by high-energy shear force milling and simple vacuum filtration. This composite material combines high flexibility, mechanical strength and good chemical stability. Chronopotentiometric charge–discharge measurements were used to determine the capacitance of our paper material. The highest capacitance achieved was 33 mF·cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA·cm−2, demonstrating potential application in supercapacitors. We further used the material as a cathode for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with an onset potential of approximately −0.2 V vs RHE. The onset potential was even lower (approximately −0.1 V vs RHE) after treatment with n-butyllithium, suggesting the introduction of new active sites. Finally, a potential use in lithium ion batteries (LIB) was examined. Our material can be used directly without any binder, additive carbon or copper current collector and delivers specific capacity of 740 mA·h·g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A·g−1. After 40 cycles at this current density the material still reached a capacity retention of 91%. Our findings show that this composite material could find application in electrochemical energy storage and generation devices where high flexibility and mechanical strength are desired.Keywords: flexible composites; hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); lithium ion batteries (LIBs); molybdenum disulfide; nanoarchitectonics; supercapacitors

To support the safe operation of the novel three-element mixed insulation oil (TEMO) transformer, gas generation behaviors of the TEMO oil–paper insulation system under overheating faults and discharge faults were investigated. Results show that that the content of H2 and C2H6 generated by TEMO–paper insulation system is much higher than that in conventional mineral oil (MO)–paper insulation system under different overheating temperatures. Under partial discharge fault, the content of H2 dissolved in oil changes distinctly, while the content of C2H2 also increases with the discharge time. Under surface flashover breakdown, AC breakdown and lightning impulse breakdown fault, the content of H2 and C2H2 changes greatly compared to other gases, while the concentration of total hydrocarbon gases in TEMO–paper insulation system is smaller than that in MO–paper insulating system after the same breakdown times. The diagnosis model of overheating and discharge faults for the TEMO–paper insulation system was proposed based on the oil dissolved gas analysis, while H2, C2H2 and C2H4 were chosen as the characteristic gases and the boundary settings were determined. The verified result for the low-temperature overheating, lightning impulse and surface flashover fault for the TEMO–paper insulation system presents that the new diagnosis model is effective.

Abtsract Oil–paper composite insulation (OPCI) is used as the main insulation material in the converter transformer. However, the dielectric properties of insulating oil and oil‐impregnated paper are markedly mismatched under direct current (DC) voltage, resulting in an unbalanced distribution of voltage, which is considered to be a major cause of large insulation margin but frequent failures. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the voltage distribution in OPCI to enhance its breakdown strength. In this work, surface‐treated TiO2 nanoparticles were employed to modify OPCI. The polarisation current tests revealed that by changing the additive amount of nanoparticles, the polarisation intensities of both oil and oil‐impregnated paper could be adjusted. Based on this, a model taking relaxation polarisations into full consideration was established to analyse the voltage distribution in OPCI and predict the optimal concentration. The prepared OPCI with the concentration of 0.02 g/L has desired balanced voltage distribution due to the influence of nanoparticles on interface charge, and therefore high breakdown strengths under both DC voltage and polarity reversal voltage, which can be increased by 22.6% at most. This work puts forward a novel idea to improve insulation property of OPCI and provides a reference for broader application of nanomaterial in power equipment.

Oil-paper (cellulose) insulation is the main insulation of converter transformer, and the space charge accumulation inside the oil-impregnated paper is a serious problem. To decrease the space charge accumulation and improve the breakdown field strength, the oil-impregnated paper (OIP) with different Al2O3 nanoparticles content was prepared. The test results show that the space charge accumulation in the non-modified paper and 3.75 wt% Al2O3 paper is serious under DC electric field, and the decay amplitude and decay speed of space charge are larger and faster in the short circuit test. Suppression effect of space charge in the 2.5 wt% Al2O3 paper is the best, and the decay amplitude and decay speed of space charge are the lest and slowest. Moreover, the surface potential of non-modified paper decay faster, and that of 2.5 wt% Al2O3 paper decay slowest. The breakdown field strength and resistivity of Al2O3-modified OIP are larger than those of the non-modified paper. The breakdown field strength of 2.5 wt% Al2O3 paper increases most, about 16%. Suitable Nano-Al2O3-modified increases the traps level and density of deep traps in oil-impregnated paper, resulting in the space charge suppression and breakdown field strength improvement.

This paper presents a wavelet texture analysis of microscopy images acquired from artificially-aged samples of power transformer winding insulation paper. Oil-impregnated Kraft paper samples are prepared for experimental tests where they are thermally stressed in an oven at temperatures above what would normally occur in operation. This accelerated ageing test arrangement is used to produce a set of paper samples with varying levels of insulation deterioration. From the paper samples, microscopy images of the paper surface are obtained using a standard optical microscope. These microscopic images are analyzed using a texture analysis method that utilizes a two-dimensional wavelet transform to extract detailed information from the wavelet decomposition coefficient matrices. These features are analyzed to assess how the texture of paper changes in response to thermal deterioration and ageing. The results suggest that the texture features are correlated to the commonly-used degree of polymerization test. Additionally, statistical classification is performed on the wavelet texture features using both supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods. The results demonstrate that differentiation between oil-impregnated paper samples with different levels of thermal degradation using wavelet texture analysis is effective.

The electrical, thermal, chemical, and mechanical characteristics of a flexible electrode consisting of carbon nanotubes on paper were investigated under various conditions. The main driving motivation was to develop a durable and flexible film for conductive electrode applications. The general characteristics of the electrode based on carbon nanotubes were found to be sensitive to coating sequence and aging temperature and duration. The number of coatings can be used to tune network density and form a well entangled carbon nanotube layer on paper. Aging temperature was found to be critical to electrical characteristics, and 60 °C was determined to be the optimal aging temperature. At higher temperatures, calcium oxide contained in the paper may form carbonates, which change the structure of the paper, and the carbon nanotubes can be oxidized, which led to reduced electrical performance. The mechanical durability tests revealed that the electrode was functional up to a 3 mm bending radius.

Diagnosis of the aging stage of oil-paper insulation is an important technical means for preventing aging failure of oil-paper insulation equipment. This article proposes a Raman spectroscopy diagnostic model to assess the aging status of transformer oilpaper insulation by analyzing the Raman spectra of the insulating oil. Oil-paper samples in different aging stages were obtained from electrical and thermal accelerated aging tests in the lab. The Raman spectra of insulating oil were collected in the range from 400 to 3000 cm−1, which covers the Raman signals of the aging products of oilpaper insulation. Spectral peak contour features were extracted based on Voigt fitting of the Raman spectra and studied using the grid search optimized one-against-one multi-class support vector machine (OAO MCSVM) for diagnosis of the aging stage. The results show that the diagnostic accuracy of the diagnostic model based on the spectral peak contour features was 92% (46/50). Spectral peak contour features demonstrate an ability to reflect the aging process, and the proposed diagnostic method shows potential for monitoring oil-paper insulation.

The aging of power transformers causes several defects and damages in the insulating system, especially in the insulating paper. The degradation of the insulating paper generates dissolved gases in the insulating oil, which are measured by gas chromatography and used as an indicator of the insulation status. The state of the insulating paper can be identified based on the degree of polymerization (DP) measurement. In some cases, when the measurement of DP is difficult, estimating DP can be accomplished through gathering information about some of the testing parameters, such as the dissolved gases (DGA), breakdown voltage (BDV), oil interfacial tension (IF), oil acidity (ACI), moisture content (MC), oil color (OC), dielectric loss (Tan δ), and furans concentration specifically (2-furfuraldhyde (FA)). The statistical tools (correlation and multiple linear regression), based on 131 transformer samples, can be used to build a relation linking DP and one or more of the previous parameters to identify the insulating paper status and the percentage of remaining life of the transformer. The results indicated that it is difficult to build a mathematical model to relate between the DP and the testing variables, except with FA, where the trend of DP with FA is more obvious than with other variables. The empirical formula to compute DP based on the FA concentration was developed and gave promising results to compute DP and the remaining life of the power transformers.

The final quality of tissue paper depends on the parameters of the continuous transformation process and maintenance of rolls of a tissue paper machine. For a better quality, outer surfaces of the rolls must always be clean, and their roughness should be maintained in the same way. A Doctor Blade provides for such requirements. Our work is focused on the development of a pneumatic oscillator that moves a Doctor Blade in order to scrape the outer surfaces of the rolls. It is based on a low-friction double-effect cylinder with a through-rod. The integration of two limit switch valves, one for each head of the cylinder, and a smart pneumatic circuit to obtain a very low speed of the piston at constant load, represents the novelty of the proposed device. The piston of the cylinder allows for alternatively switching the limit switches that command the 5/2 air-operated pilot valve of the cylinder. The oscillator’s design, pneumatic circuit, and working principle are detailed. Experimental tests on the conceived limit switch and on the first prototype of the pneumatic oscillator validated the effectiveness of the proposed solution, the technical feasibility of the device, and the absence of stick-slip during the oscillatory motion at low speed.

In this article, we report the development and optimization of a cost-effective, biodegradable, disposable, and lightweight conductive polymer deposited on exfoliated graphite paper battery. The anode is made of aluminum foil and the cathode using electrochemically deposited anthraquinone conductive polymers on exfoliated graphite paper. Concentrated sodium chloride salt is used as the electrolyte. The battery shows a maximum capacity of 235 mA h g−1 and a superior cyclability of up to 500 cycles at 50.0 mA cm−2 current density.

Establishing and optimizing a distributed parameter thermal path model for transformer windings is an important means to analyze the hot-spot temperature of the windings; furthermore, in the process of improving the thermal path model of transformers and improving the accuracy of their models, the thermal characteristics of the insulation paper are extremely important. A microscopic thermal contact resistance model was established for the contact interface of insulation paper and copper, according to the microscopic morphology parameters of copper and insulation paper observed by atomic force microscopy, the thermal contact resistance under different temperatures was calculated. A dual heat flow test platform was built to test the heat transfer behavior of four different thickness insulation papers under four temperatures, and the thermal contact resistance and thermal bulk resistance with temperature were analyzed. The results show that as the temperature increases, the thermal resistance of the insulation paper becomes larger and the thermal conductivity decreases. The average error between the experimental and theoretical values of the thermal contact resistance under four temperature points in the study is 6.6%. The results provide a data support for establishing and optimizing transformer heat generation and heat transfer models.

In power cables with sector current-carrying strands (SCSs), impregnated with paper insulation, there is a tangential electric field component along the layers. The permissible electric strength along the paper tapes is about ten times less than in the normal direction, which is taken into account when developing three-wire power cables impregnated with paper insulation for voltages of 20 and 35 kV. The use of modern paper—plastic-impregnated insulation having higher performance characteristics than conventional impregnated paper insulation, can promote the creation of more efficient cable designs with individually shielded sector-shape conductors in a common lead sheath for a voltage of 20 kV. Each insulated strand of such cables has a copper shield, and so it is enough to consider the electric field in the cross section of the insulation of one SCS. The electric potential distribution is described by the Laplace differential equation, the solution of which is implemented by the finite element method using the Ansys Maxwell software package. A numerical study of the electric fields has been carried out for power cables with SCSs that have a cross section of 400 mm2 for a voltage of 20 kV. The curvature radius of the cable sectors varied from 5 to 7 mm with an insulation thickness of 7 to 9 mm. Based on the research results, the maximum values of the normal and tangential electric field components depending on the curvature radius of the sector strand and insulation thickness have been obtained. Insulation areas have been allocated in which the maximum absolute values of the tangential electric field strength components have been observed. The allowable values of the sector curvature radius and the thickness of insulation for power cables with paper-impregnated insulation for 20 kV have been determined.

Conductivity is an important parameter which has definite correlation with the amount of moisture present within the transformer insulation. However, in existing methods conductivity is usually estimated from time domain (PDC) measurement, which is inadvertently noise prone and time consuming. Considering this issue, in this article presents a novel technique for conductivity estimation for moisture sensing of oil-paper insulation using frequency domain spectroscopy measurement (FDS). To this end, FDS measurement of oil-paper insulation was performed from 50mHz to 1kHz to obtain the imaginary complex permittivity $\varepsilon ''$ ( $\omega$ ), which is a function of conductivity ( $\sigma$ ) as well as imaginary complex susceptibility $\chi ''$ ( $\omega$ ). From the knowledge of frequency variation of both $\sigma $ and $\chi ''$ ( $\omega$ ), we developed an electrical equivalent model of the insulation. The equivalent model parameters were optimized until $\varepsilon ''$ ( $\omega$ ) computed from the proposed model and that obtained from original FDS measurement were almost identical. The conductivity values obtained from the equivalent model showed good agreement when compared with PDC measurement. To validate the practicability of the proposed method, experiments were conducted on various test samples and also on a few real life transformers. Most importantly, the measurement time was found to be reduced by 78.5%, enabling diagnosis of transformer insulation at a significantly reduced time.

The ratio of protein to creatinine (PCR) in urine is a measure of kidney health of a human body. We report the development of a point-of-care (POC) kidney function test (KFT) kit, which is composed of a paper-based PCR sensor, an opto-electrochemical measurement unit, a display, and a facility to transfer data to a smartphone. For the total protein sensor, the pieces of filter papers were coated with a mixture of alcoholic bromophenol blue and citric buffer leading to a chrome-yellow coloration. While for the creatinine sensor the papers were coated with alkaline picrate solution leading to a lemon-yellow coloration of the surface. Dispensing protein (creatinine) solution of known concentration on the respective sensors led to the conversion of chrome-yellow to bluish-green coloration (lemon-yellow to orange coloration) for the total protein (creatinine) sensor. The intensity of such colorations varied with the concentration of the analytes in the solutions. The variations in the intensities of colors with analyte concentration were quantified by integrating a light emitting diode (LED) at one side of each sensor and a light intensity sensor (LIS) on the other side. The intensity of the transmitted rays, passing through the sensors, was found to vary the electrical output of the LIS monotonically with the loading of the total protein or creatinine in the analyte. This helped in obtaining the calibration plots for the PCR sensors. Further, the sensors were employed for the on-spot detection of the unknown PCR in the real human urine samples.

Carbonization of biomasses is an effective and important approach to recycle biomass waste. The tissue papers are one of the most common household trash and waste lots of natural resources and energies. Herein, the one-step carbonization and activation treatment was applied on two kinds of tissue papers to transform them into porous carbons. It was found the precursor structure and composition as well as the calcination temperatures play key roles to control the pore structures. As the active materials of supercapacitor electrodes, the resultant porous carbons obtained from different paper precursors and calcination temperatures (700–900 °C) presented different electrochemical performances. The microporous carbons derived from the 700 °C calcination of the tissue paper using the wood pulp as the raw material showed high capacitance up to ~ 200 F/g, providing a simple but effective way to recycle biomasses.

Researchers have been exploring dielectric testing techniques both in time and frequency domain for insulation condition assessment of oil-paper insulated transformers. In a practical dielectric system, dipoles are found to behave according to a distribution of elementary Debye relaxation properties. Suitable distribution density functions have been proposed to characterise such many-body interaction processes. Cole–Cole diagrams can be one of the methods for studying the nature of frequency dependency of dielectric materials of complex structure. Cole–Cole plots are commonly used for characterising different materials such as dielectric mixtures, ionic liquids, cable insulating oil, polar liquids etc. The scope of its application for assessing transformer oil-paper insulation considering distributed relaxation process has not been explored yet. The present contribution discusses mathematical formulations used for transforming the experimentally obtained time domain dielectric response test data to distribution domain and further to frequency domain for obtaining the Cole–Cole plots. Findings about the influence of various operating conditions and insulation status on the Cole–Cole diagram have been reported in this contribution. Results of tests on field transformers are also presented. This paper attempts to employ the features of Cole–Cole diagrams as potential indicators for analysing condition of the oil-paper insulation considering distributed relaxation process.

Gas diffusion layer is one of the most important components of fuel cell, which supports the catalytic layer, collects the current and facilitates mass transfer. However, current carbon paper is mainly composed of long carbon fibers (CF), which brings drawbacks including rough surface, poor body homogeneity, excessive thickness, and preparation difficulty, etc. In this research, we invent a combination method to produce a highly flat, highly homogeneous, ultra-thin and high-performance carbon paper for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The method combines the advantages of two materials, i.e. few-walled carbon nanotube (FWCNT) with high flatness and short CF with high porosity. And the combination method only contains three steps, material dispersion, carbon paper formation and heat treatment. The highest temperature for the heat treatment process is only 350 °C, which is much lower than the traditional 2000 °C. Due to the small size and fine distribution of FWCNT and CF, the new carbon paper exhibits highly flat (

L -dopa is a chiral drug that has been extensively used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The concentration of L -dopa plays a vital role in the treatment, and this work emphasizes on designing a versatile platform for the quantitative and selective detection of L -dopa using reduced graphene quantum dot (rGQD). The platform is efficient in three different sensing methods, viz. fluorescence turn-on, filter paper-based sensing, and electronic measurements. The rGQD undergoes a dramatic fluorescence turn-on in the presence of L -dopa in aqueous media and artificial urine with a detection limit as low as 1.307 µM and 1.217 µM respectively. Experimental evidence revealed that the fluorescence enhancement is attributed to aggregation-induced emission mechanism. The system is also applicable for visual detection of L -dopa using filter paper strips treated with rGQD and develops bright fluorescence under ultra-violet irradiation. Apart from this, electrical sensors for L -dopa were also developed by preparing rGQD treated poly-vinyl alcohol films, and the increase in the current conduction with varying concentrations of L -dopa was observed. The films produce 2.5 order higher current conduction at 300 μM of L -dopa with a detection limit of about 13.136 µM. At the final stage, we have designed flexible electronic devices using these materials that develop 1.3 order higher current for L -dopa. The devices exhibit excellent air stability under varied relative humidity conditions as well as high bending stability for potential practical applications.

We studied the production and electrochemical performance of NiCo2S4 electrodeposited reduced graphene oxide (rGO) paper for use as a freestanding flexible electrode for the simultaneous determination of folic acid (FA) and ascorbic acid (AA). Production of rGO paper was achieved through vacuum filtration of the aqueous dispersion of graphene oxide, followed by chemical reduction in hydrogen iodide solution. NiCo2S4/rGO paper material was fabricated with a simple approach using electrodeposition of hydrothermal synthesized NiCo2S4 nanoparticles directly on rGO paper. The physicochemical properties of as-prepared flexible NiCo2S4/rGO paper were characterized by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction patterns. This freestanding paper electrode demonstrated high sensitivity, a wide linear range, and a low detection limit towards the simultaneous detection of FA and AA. NiCo2S4/rGO paper sensor, possessing easy preparation, low cost, and high flexibility, was tested in real samples with promising recoveries. This study exhibited that the approach of the electrodeposition of bimetallic sulfides on freestanding graphene paper substrates has great potential to develop high-performance flexible electrochemical sensors.

Disposable ion-selective electrodes of high reproducibility of recorded potentials between different sensors have been prepared using carbon-nanotubes modified paper as the transducer and electrical lead, and a poly(vinyl chloride) ion-selective membrane. The conducting paper was obtained using carboxymethylcellulose stabilized carbon nanotubes suspension – combination found to result in high stability of conventional sensors. It was shown for the first time that change of the amount of conducting material used to prepare sensor, from conventional (where it is used as transducer) to disposable sensors (where it is used as transducer and electrical lead), requiring application of much higher amount of carbon nanotubes significantly affects performance of the sensors. Presence of ions in the suspension used results in occurrence of super-Nernstian range on the potentiometric calibration curve of potassium-selective sensor, below 10−5 M KCl. Highly reproducible potential values, between sensors as well as between different calibrations, were achieved introducing mixture of cobalt(II) porphyrin/cobalt(III) corrole to the carbon nanotubes layer, at the back side of the membrane. Presence of porphyrinoids not only stabilizes potential values obtained for the sensors but also tailors ion transport through the membrane, resulting in stable potential of the sensors, although a super-Nernstian region is present on the calibration line.

In this paper, a numerical model of bubble evolution is established by studying the microstructure of pressboard and the physical process of bubble generation. In the model, the porous structure of fibers is equivalent to microtubules, the gases in the bubbles are classified into two categories, and the ideal gas state equation is used to describe the bubble state. Then the pressure conditions at the bubble boundary and the evaporation rate of water are taken as solution conditions to solve the physical quantities in the state equation. The numerical model provides a new way to calculate the initial temperature of bubble escape (ITBE). And the bubble evolution inside the pressboard is obtained which is hard to be observed in experiment. After that, the influences of moisture content of pressboard and cellulose aging on ITBE in the numerical model are discussed. The model results show that the expansion rate of bubble is not uniform. Bubble growth is slow in the early stage of temperature rise, when the temperature reaches a certain threshold the growth rate of bubble radius increases significantly, which is of great significance to the temperature limit on oil-immersed power transformers.

This paper investigates the dissolved gases evolution in transformer oil under combined DC/AC electrical-thermal stress. Dissolved gases detected in transformer aged insulation oil reveal that oil under AC electric field combined with thermal stress can produce more dissolved gases than oil under DC electric field with thermal stress but less than the gases produced in oil under distorted AC or combined AC/DC voltage stress. This is attributed to the divergent migration properties of the charged components under different types of electric fields. To further understand this behavior, carrier recombination coefficient is proposed to explain the oil DGA results under various aging stresses. Results show that diagnostic parameters such as breakdown voltage, oil interfacial tension, and moisture content in pressboard should be used along with DGA results in order to accurately diagnose the insulation condition within converter transformers that impose a combined AC/DC voltage stress on the insulation system.

PI fiber insulation paper has excellent insulation and heat resistance, which can replace traditional insulation paper to provide a new high-performance material. In this paper, we adopt a two-step method to synthesize PI, that is, firstly synthesize polyamic acid, and then perform electrospinning and thermal imidization to prepare PI porous fiber membrane. The test results show that the breakdown field strength of the PI porous film is 50 kV/mm. Further research shows that the insulation structure has the characteristics of continuous multiple breakdown. When the fiber film is repeatedly broken down to 25 times at the same point, the field strength of each breakdown of the fiber film changes between 40 and 55 kV/mm, and the average breakdown field strength is 53 kV/mm. Nano-Al2O3 was introduced into the fiber membrane by in situ polymerization. The breakdown field strength of the composite fiber film can reach 74.89 kV/mm after doping 2 wt% nano-Al2O3, which is higher than that of the pure film. At the same time, this kind of fiber paper also has repeatable breakdown characteristics, and the breakdown voltage distribution width of multiple breakdown is reduced. This characteristic provides the maintenance free characteristic of DC over-voltage for the insulation structure composed of this fiber paper, and can improve the service life of transformer under DC over-voltage such as lightning stroke.

Nomex insulation paper has been widely used in mining dry type transformer insulation because of its excellent performance. However, the injection of space charge can affect the electrical properties of the Nomex paper and accelerate the ageing process of the insulation system, which causes the insulation system failure or even breakdown. Therefore, it is of great practical value to study the space charge characteristics of Nomex insulation paper in different hygrothermal ageing conditions. The accelerated hygrothermal ageing tests of Nomex insulation specimens with different initial moisture contents were conducted. The space charge distribution of specimens impregnated by varnish were measured by the pulsed electro-acoustic method at different ageing stages. Simultaneously, the space charge characteristics during polarising and depolarising phases were deeply analysed. Experimental results show that negative charges accumulate between the varnish-paper interface in specimens near the anode. The number of negative charges gradually decreases with the increase of ageing degree. Under the influence of humidity, Nomex paper can be hydrolysed, which increases the trap density and trap level. Finally, a large amount of positive and negative charges in aged specimens would result in the distortion of the local electric field, which could decrease the breakdown strength of Nomex insulation specimens and be a threat to transformer insulation.

Several miniaturized viscometers, or microviscometers, have been developed exploiting numerous rapid prototyping techniques. Among them, paper microstrips, famously known as microfluidic paper-based analytical devices ( $\mu $ PADs), have become popular due to their cost-efficacy, simple fabrication, fast response, and easily disposable. Many fabrication methods are existing to develop paper microstrips. Herein, an alternative fabrication method is proposed where fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based 3-D printer (3DP) has been employed using polycaprolactone (PCL) filament. F, image processing has been utilized to measure viscosity in such microfluidic domain. Viscosity was calculated by measuring the time taken by the fluid to cover a fixed length between two spots in the microchannel based on the programed and color-coded regions-of-interest. The image processing program was developed considering the change in the gray scale in the virtual region of interests (ROIs) in the microchannel during the fluid flow in the paper microstrips. A 3-D printed handheld platform, containing raspberry pi with on-board camera and display, was developed to execute the image processing and automate the entire work flow. In the proposed device, the accuracy was measured to be >92%.

Oil-paper insulation ageing of transformer has characteristics of spatial locality due to uneven temperature distribution. The transformer is sealed, it is difficult to obtain the local ageing state of oil-paper insulation by sampling directly. Currently, there are no effective detection method to detect the insulation state of local regions. The oil-immersed paper resistivity inversion method can nondestructively assess the local state of oil-paper insulation. However, the current inversion methods still have shortcomings and need to be improved. In this paper, combining the back propagation neural network (BPNN) and Newton downhill method (NDM), an improved inversion method is proposed to optimize the current inversion method, so as to reduce the effect of initial value on it and make calculated results converge better. Finally, a 3D 10 kV transformer model is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The resistivity calculated by the improved method show that the method can provide initial resistivity values for technicians and improve the convergence and accuracy of current inversion method, which is more suitable for extending to the engineering practice.

A simple, scalable approach is developed to fabricate a flexible hybrid paper electrode composed of the polyaniline/graphene and the carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced bacterial cellulose. The prepared hybrid paper presents high areal capacitance of 4.145 F cm−2 at 5 mA cm−2 and an extremely low sheet resistance of 29.7 Ω sq.−1. The CF endows the paper electrode remarkable foldability with no mechanical destruction. Even after being repeatedly bent 180° up to 1000 times, the initial capacitance can be retained up to 98%. A fabricated all-solid-state supercapacitor based on the resulting paper electrode has an excellent areal capacitance of 630 mF cm−2 and energy density of 2.8 mWh cm−3. The results confirm that this approach can fabricate the highly foldable and shape-tailorable energy storage devices and may have wide potential applications.

Flexible and lightweight shielding materials recently have attracted increasing attention for terahertz wave due to the deteriorated performance of electronic equipment interferenced by electromagnetic yielding. Herein, flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO) papers were prepared by solution evaporation method to attenuate the electromagnetic wave in terahertz field. They exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and remarkable electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness. The electrical conductivity of the rGO papers was improved from 54.07 to 78.67 S/cm after annealing at 400 °C. The rGO paper annealed at 400 °C was only ~ 370 µm in thickness and particularly exhibited an outstanding absorption performance of 17.6 dB at 0.7 THz. It has been found that the maximum absorption performance of rGO papers was basically equivalent to that of the metamaterials. Moreover, electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 72.1 dB of the rGO papers was obtained at 0.6 THz, which indicated that ~ 99.99% of the power was shielded. Thus, the flexible rGO papers maybe a promising candidate for optimized electromagnetic shielding materials in the terahertz band.

Utilizing graphene-based hybrid papers or films as multifunctional electrodes has become the focus of clean energy devices due to the beneficial combination of their excellent electrical properties and multiple functions. However, limited attention has been paid to such hybrid papers with both outstanding mechanical and electrochemical properties. Recently, we fabricate rationally designed TiO2-B nanofibrils reinforced graphene paper, which can achieve high mechanical strength (88.5 MPa) without sacrificing their electrochemical properties. They further deliver capacities of 231 mAh g−1 (408.9 mAh cm−3) for Li-ion electrode and 201 mAh g−1 (355.8 mAh cm−3) for Na-ion electrode respectively at the same current density of 33.5 mA g−1. The outstanding mechanical stability of as-prepared hybrid electrode is demonstrated with a prototype of a bendable Li-ion capacitor. Besides, the as-prepared electrodes also reveal great potential to serve as light weight and ultrathin electromagnetic interference shielding materials. Single layer of hybrid paper exhibits a shielding effectiveness of over 10 dB (corresponding ∼90% shielding). These results prove that TiO2-B nanofibrils reinforced graphene paper can serve as a multifunctional flexible electrode for diverse applications. Moreover, this work also demonstrates a novel strategy on how to enhance mechanical properties for those flexible electrodes.

Breakdown (BD) and partial discharge (PD) characteristics of insulating paper and transformer board materials are investigated as cost-effective alternatives to high-price materials like polyimide (PI) or polytetrafluoroethylene and fiber reinforced plastic materials typically used in superconducting devices based on high temperature superconductors cooled with liquid nitrogen (LN 2 ). Three different cotton and cellulose based insulating papers are tested in LN 2 at atmospheric pressure and compared to synthetic sheet materials and polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP). Additionally, the BD performance and PD characteristics of three different transformer board materials are investigated in LN 2 . The results reveal that the paper and board materials have nearly the same or even slightly higher BD voltages in LN 2 in comparison to the values in insulating oil. The pure paper materials with thicknesses of 130 μm have a dielectric strength of 70-90 kV/mm, whereas values of 130-140 kV/mm are measured for PPLP and PI with nearly the same thickness. The dielectric strength of the board materials has a maximum value of 76 kV/mm. In the frame of the investigations, the BD performance of the pure paper materials in LN 2 is not influenced by the water content of the materials, dried and undried specimens have nearly the same BD voltage. Only the PPLP material has a 15% higher BD voltage in the dried state in comparison to the undried state.

A converter transformer is important primary equipment in a DC transmission project. The voltage on the valve side winding is complex when the equipment is running, including DC, AC, and AC–DC combined voltage. The insulation structure of the valve side winding of a converter transformer is an oil-paper insulation structure, which may have a variety of defects in the manufacturing stage and daily use, resulting in partial discharge. Therefore, it is the key to studying the partial discharge characteristics and mechanism of oil-paper insulation under AC–DC combined voltage. In this paper, we build a two-dimensional air gap model of oil-paper-insulated pressboard considering the actual particles and actual reaction based on the fluid model. The characteristics and evolution mechanism of partial discharge (PD) in pressboard under different AC/DC combined voltages are studied by numerical simulation. The results show that when the DC component increases, the polarity effect of partial discharge is more obvious, while the potential and discharge intensity in the air gap decrease. Further analysis revealed that the DC component in the combined voltage accumulated a large number of surface charges on the surface of the air gap, and the space charge distribution was more uniform and dispersed, which generated an electric field with opposite polarity to the DC component in the air gap and, then, inhibited the development of local discharge in the paperboard. The results of the simulation are consistent with the previous experimental phenomena, and the mechanism analysis of the simulation results also verifies the previous analysis on the mechanism of experimental phenomena. This will lay a theoretical foundation for the further study of partial discharge phenomenon of oil-paper insulation structures in practical operation in the future.

Toxic and nontoxic volatile organic compound (VOC) gases are emitted into the atmosphere from certain solids and liquids as a consequence of wastage and some common daily activities. Inhalation of toxic VOCs has an adverse effect on human health, so it is necessary to monitor their concentration in the atmosphere. In this work, we report on the fabrication of inorganic nanotube (INT)-tungsten disulfide, paper-based graphene–PEDOT:PSS sheet and WS2 nanotube-modified conductive paper-based chemiresistors for VOC gas sensing. The WS2 nanotubes were fabricated by a two-step reaction, that is oxide reduction and sulfurization, carried out at 900 °C. The synthesized nanotubes were characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM. The synthesized nanotubes were 206–267 nm in diameter. The FE-SEM results show the length of the nanotubes to be 4.5–8 µm. The graphene–PEDOT:PSS hybrid conductive paper sheet was fabricated by a continuous coating process. Then, WS2 nanotubes were drop-cast onto conductive paper for fabrication of the chemiresistors. The feasibility and sensitivity of the WS2 nanotube-modified paper-based chemiresistor were tested in four VOC gases at different concentrations at room temperature (RT). Experimental results show the proposed sensor to be more sensitive to butanol gas when the concentration ranges from 50 to 1000 ppm. The limit of detection (LOD) of this chemiresistor for butanol gas was 44.92 ppm. The WS2 nanotube-modified paper-based chemiresistor exhibits good potential as a VOC sensor with the advantages of flexibility, easy fabrication, and low fabrication cost.

The active sulphur compounds in transformer oil would react with copper wires and produce cuprous sulphides, which then attach themselves to the surface of copper wires and insulating paper, thus reducing the electrical performance of oil–paper insulation and causing insulation failure. This article aims to make a comprehensive summary on the field of sulphur corrosion of oil–paper insulation in the mineral oil transformer, including the corrosion mechanism of sulphide on copper sheets, the deterioration mechanism of sulphide on oil–paper, the factors influencing sulphur corrosion reaction, the method of characterising the degree of sulphur corrosion, the protection technology of sulphur corrosion and the field operation measures for sulphur corrosion. Moreover, four key problems that need to be further solved were sorted out: the synergistic deterioration mechanism of sulphide and its transformation mechanism, the micro‐process and forming path of sulphur corrosion reaction, the characteristic parameters and quantitative characterisation methods of sulphur corrosion degree, and the effective protection technology of sulphide corrosion. To solve these problems, efforts will be made for deeper understanding of the sulphur corrosion phenomenon and its deterioration mechanism based on theoretical background, the assessment methods and protection technology, endeavouring to put forward solid theoretical basis and feasible technical means for preventing sulphur corrosion insulation failure.

Asymmetric Zn-air battery is an ideal power source because of its high voltage and powder density. Acidic active bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst determines the performance of asymmetric Zn-air battery greatly. Here, an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst is synthesized through the loading of coordination compound modified polyoxometalate on rice paper derived nitrogen doped carbon paper. This elctrocatalyst exhibits three-dimensional network with bulky appearance, which can be employed as air cathode in asymmetric Zn-air battery directly. In acidic electrolyte, it oxygen reduction reaction completes through a typical four-electron process. In oxygen evolution reaction, its overpotential is only 359 mV. With this electrocatalyst as air cathode and Zn plate as anode, an asymmetric Zn-air battery is assembled. The open circuit voltage of this battery is 2.09 V. Its peak power density achieves 349 mW cm−2. When discharge at 20 mA cm−2, its specific energy density reaches 1009 Wh·kg−1. Furthermore, this battery keeps stable in long time charge-discharge experiments. This asymmetric Zn-air battery is superior to traditional Zn-air battery in both charge and discharge process. This work describes an efficient acidic active bifunctional electrocatalyst to construct asymmetric Zn-air battery with high voltage and powder density.

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) multilayer sheets were synthesized using waste paper pulp as carbon source. Formation of RGO was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. RGO was mixed with cement at different concentrations (0.001, 0.01, 0.05 and 0.1% w/w) to obtain graphene cement composites (GCC). RGO is supposed to impart hydrophobicity to cement; hence, the capillary test was conducted. Hydrophobic property of GCC was found to be dependent on time, concentration and temperature. Antimicrobial property of GCC was checked which included antibacterial and antifungal studies. GCC showed better antibacterial performance (90%) against gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) than the gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, 85%). Gram negative bacteria possess structurally more complex cell membranes than gram positive bacteria; hence, it was more resistant to GCC. Our finding supports the concept of involvement of membrane bound macromolecules in antibacterial performance of RGO. GCC was also found to be effective (88% inhibition) against fungal strain (Aspergillus niger).
