Abstract

International audience; This paper focuses on the problem of the hierarchical multi‐label classification of research papers, which is the task of assigning the set of relevant labels for a paper from a hierarchy, using reduced amounts of labelled training data. Specifically, we study leveraging unlabelled data, which are usually plentiful and easy to collect, in addition to the few available labelled ones in a semi‐supervised learning framework for achieving better performance results. Thus, in this paper, we propose a semi‐supervised approach for the hierarchical multi‐label classification task of research papers based on the well‐known Co‐training algorithm, which exploit content and bibliographic coupling information as two distinct papers' views. In our approach, two hierarchical multi‐label classifiers, are learnt on different views of the labelled data, and iteratively select their most confident unlabelled samples, which are further added to the labelled set. The success of our suggested Co‐training‐based approach lies in two main components. The first is the use of two suggested selection criteria (i.e., Maximum Agreement and Labels Cardinality Consistency) that enforce selecting confident unlabelled samples. The second is the appliance of an oversampling method that rebalances the labels distribution of the initial labelled set, which reduces the reinforcement of the label imbalance issue during the Co‐training learning. The proposed approach is evaluated using a collection of scientific papers extracted from the ACM digital library. Performed experiments show the effectiveness of our approach with regards to several baseline methods.

Abstract

Formulaic expressions, such as 'in this paper we propose', are helpful for authors of scholarly papers because they convey communicative functions; in the above, it is showing the aim of this paper'. Thus, resources of formulaic expressions, such as a dictionary, that could be looked up easily would be useful. However, forms of formulaic expressions can often vary to a great extent. For example, 'in this paper we propose', 'in this study we propose' and 'in this paper we propose a new method to' are all regarded as formulaic expressions. Such a diversity of spans and forms causes problems in both extraction and evaluation of formulaic expressions. In this paper, we propose a new approach that is robust to variation of spans and forms of formulaic expressions. Our approach regards a sentence as consisting of a formulaic part and non-formulaic part. Then, instead of trying to extract formulaic expressions from a whole corpus, by extracting them from each sentence, different forms can be dealt with at once. Based on this formulation, to avoid the diversity problem, we propose evaluating extraction methods by how much they convey specific communicative functions rather than by comparing extracted expressions to an existing lexicon. We also propose a new extraction method that utilises named entities and dependency structures to remove the non-formulaic part from a sentence. Abstract

International audience; Whenever a bug or vulnerability is detected in the Linux kernel, the kernel developers will endeavour to fix it by introducing a patch into the mainline version of the Linux kernel source tree. However, many users run older "stable" versions of Linux, meaning that the patch should also be "backported" to one or more of these older kernel versions. This process is error-prone and there is usually a long delay in publishing the backported patch. Based on an empirical study, we show that around 8% of all commits submitted to Linux mainline are backported to older versions, but often more than one month elapses before the backport is available. Hence, we propose a patch backporting technique that can automatically transfer patches from the mainline version of Linux into older stable versions. Our approach first synthesizes a partial transformation rule based on a Linux mainline patch. This rule can then be generalized by analysing the alignment between the mainline and target versions. The generalized rule is then applied to the target version to produce a backported patch. We have implemented our transformation technique in a tool called FixMorph and evaluated it on 350 Linux mainline patches. FixMorph correctly backports 75.1% of them. Compared to existing techniques, FixMorph improves both the precision and recall in backporting patches. Apart from automation of software maintenance tasks, patch backporting helps in reducing the exposure to known security vulnerabilities in stable versions of the Linux kernel.

Abstract

Swarms of autonomous aircraft systems (SAAS) are used to accomplish missions that deal with sensitive and critical data. As such, these systems are subject to attacks among which clone attacks. Several clone attacks detection approaches either in stationary or mobile wireless sensor networks have been proposed. Unfortunately, the existing approaches are not suitable for swarms of autonomous aircraft systems because either they do not guarantee a fast enough detection (while most SAAS missions are real time missions, e.g. surveillance), or they depend on strong assumptions that are hard to achieve in practice (e.g. absence of nodes collusion, impossibility for an attacker to track a genuine node). In this paper, we present a novel clone attack detection approach specific to SAAS that solves several unaddressed issues and that makes it possible to improve the security and the privacy of the assets of the SAAS.

Abstract

Proof assistants are getting more widespread use in research and industry to provide certified and independently checkable guarantees about theories, designs, systems and implementations. However, proof assistant implementations themselves are seldom verified, although they take a major share of the trusted code base in any such certification effort. In this area, proof assistants based on Higher-Order Logic enjoy stronger guarantees, as self-certified implementations have been available for some years. One cause of this difference is the inherent complexity of dependent type theories together with their extensions with inductive types, universe polymorphism and complex sort systems, and the gap between theory on paper and practical implementations in efficient programming languages. MetaCoq is a collaborative project that aims to tackle these difficulties to provide the first fully-certified realistic implementation of a type checker for the full calculus underlying the Coq proof assistant. To achieve this, we refined the sometimes blurry, if not incorrect, specification and implementation of the system. We show how theoretical tools from this community such as bidirectional type-checking, Tait-Martin-L\"of/Takahashi's confluence proof technique and monadic and dependently-typed programming can help construct the following artefacts: a specification of Coq's syntax and type theory, the Polymorphic Cumulative Calculus of (Co)-Inductive Constructions (PCUIC); a monad for the manipulation of raw syntax and interaction with the Coq system; a verification of PCUIC's metatheory, whose main results are the confluence of reduction, type preservation and principality of typing; a realistic, correct and complete type-checker for PCUIC; a sound type and proof erasure procedure from PCUIC to untyped lambda-calculus, i.e., the core of the extraction mechanism of Coq., Comment: In Proceedings LFMTP 2021, arXiv:2107.07376

Abstract

The dataset contains the spatial data needed to build the network of least cost camel paths between archaeological sites and watering places in the Egyptian Eastern Desert during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. It includes the sites to be linked, the travel factors (topography, navigation and terrain surface), the modern traveler routes used for training and model validation, and the outputs. Data processing models, made on ArcGIS 10.5, are available. Data and analyses for model calibration and validation to assess its quality are also provided. The objective of this dataset is to be able to reproduce the network created in the Egyptian Eastern Desert and facilitate the application of the approach to other study areas. Although the input data is based on the Egyptian Eastern Desert, the method is nevertheless reproducible using the data processing models developed. This artifact includes source code, scripts and datasets required to reproduce the experimental figures in the evaluation of the MM'18 paper, which is entitled "MiniView Layout for Bandwidth-Efficient 360-Degree Video". The artifact reports the comparison results among the standard cube layout (CUBE), the equi-angular layout (EAC), and the MiniView layout (MVL) in terms of compressed video size, visual quality of views and decoding and rendering time.

Abstract

International audience; The paper presents a new segmentation method for Integrated ICS (Industrial Control Systems) with Corporate system. This new method aims at simplifying security zones identification by focusing only on the system's aspects that are really relevant for segmentation taking into account the system's constraints. Multiple research works have studied IICS (Inte-grated ICS) segmentation but their solutions are unfortunately not generic enough and do not sufficiently take into account all of the Integrated ICS specificity. Our new method tries to address the problem more efficiently by providing realistic and pragmatic answers to the issue while remaining sufficiently generic to be applied to different types of Integrated ICS.

Abstract

Sometimes the quality of a process is best expressed by a relationship between response variables and explanatory variables. Checking over the time the stability of such functional relationships using statistical methods is called “profile monitoring”. Since 2007, when a detailed review paper in the field of profile monitoring was presented, an increasing number of papers have been published in this area. In this paper, we present a conceptual classification scheme and classify the papers in this area since 2008 up to 2018. The relevant papers are categorized and analyzed under different metrics and directions for future studies are recommended.

Abstract

This paper introduces the concept of using programmers as root of trust, for bare metal terminals, such as blockchain crypto terminals. When electronics devices are delivered through non trusted supply chains, there is a risk of malware injection. Bare metal architecture defeats these threats, but raises the issue of programmer integrity insurance. We propose to use innovative integrity probe software whose goal is to detect malicious bootloader thanks to which they are downloaded in the programmer memory.

Abstract

International audience; The task of tagging papers with semantic metadata in order to analyze their relatedness represents a good foundation for a paper recommender system. The analysis from this paper extends from previous research in order to create a graph of papers from a specific domain with the purpose of determining each article's importance within the considered corpus of papers. Moreover, as non-latent representations are powerful when used in conjunction with latent ones, our system retrieves semantically close words, not present in the paper, in order to improve the retrieval of papers. Our previous analyses used the semantic representation of papers in different semantic models with the purpose of creating visual graphs based on the semantic relatedness links between the abstracts. The current analysis takes a step forward by proposing a model that can suggest which papers are of the highest relevance, share similar concepts, and are semantically related with the initial query. Our study is performed using paper abstracts in the field of information technology extracted from the Web of Science citation index. The research includes a use case and its corresponding results by using interactive and exploratory network graph representations.

Abstract

International audience; Illustrators are advanced users of both traditional and computer-assisted drawing tools, and therefore, observing their strategies is very valuable for research on drawing interfaces. We interviewed four professional illustrators in their work environment. We also followed the work of an artist for a two-year period. We observed that artists mix a variety of techniques that involve specialized computer software and hardware such as Adobe Photoshop, a graphics tablet and a scanner, and traditional physical tools such as pencils, paper, and customized light tables. Our findings inspired BricoSketch, an augmented paper interface that enables illustrators to zoom into parts of their drawings and work at different levels of detail on paper. Our early results demonstrate that BricoSketch supports real tasks, improving productivity on paper while enhancing illustrators’ creative ways of working.

Abstract

National audience; Interactive paper technologies offer new opportunities for supporting the highly individual practices of creative artists, such as contemporary music composers, who express and explore their ideas on both paper and the computer. We introduce PaperComposer, a graphical interface builder that allows users to create a personalized interactive paper interface that they can connect to their own computer-based musical data. We also present an API that facilitates the development of interactive paper components for PaperComposer. We describe one public demonstration of a novel musical interface designed for children and our collaborations with composers to create two novel interactive music interfaces that reflected their individual composition styles.

Abstract

International audience; Ethereum is a framework for cryptocurrencies which uses blockchain technology to provide an open global computing platform, called the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). EVM executes bytecode on a simple stack machine. Programmers do not usually write EVM code; instead, they can program in a JavaScript-like language, called Solidity, that compiles to bytecode. Since the main purpose of EVM is to execute smart contracts that manage and transfer digital assets (called Ether), security is of paramount importance. However, writing secure smart contracts can be extremely difficult: due to the openness of Ethereum, both programs and pseudonymous users can call into the public methods of other programs, leading to potentially dangerous compositions of trusted and untrusted code. This risk was recently illustrated by an attack on TheDAO contract that exploited subtle details of the EVM semantics to transfer roughly $50M worth of Ether into the control of an attacker.In this paper, we outline a framework to analyze and verify both the runtime safety and the functional correctness of Ethereum contracts by translation to F*, a functional programming language aimed at program verification.

International audience; On Android, installing an application implies accepting the permissions it requests, and these permissions are then enforced at runtime. In this work, we focus on the privacy implications of the ACCESS_WIFI_STATE permission. For this purpose, we analyzed permissions of the 2700 most popular applications on Google Play and found that the ACCESS_WIFI_STATE permission is used by 41% of them. We then performed a static analysis of 998 applications requesting this permission and based on the results, chose 88 applications for dynamic analysis. Our analyses reveal that this permission is already used by some companies to collect user Personally Identifiable Information (PII). We also conducted an online survey to study users' perception of the privacy risks associated with this permission. This survey shows that users largely underestimate the privacy implications of this permission. As this permission is very common, most users are therefore potentially at risk.

Abstract

International audience; Large scale distributed systems have become ubiquitous, from on-line social networks to the Internet-of-things. To meet rising expectations (scalability, robustness, flexibility,...) these systems increasingly espouse complex distributed ar-chitectures, that are hard to design, deploy and maintain. To grasp this complexity, developers should be allowed to assemble large distributed systems from smaller parts using a seamless, high-level programming paradigm. We present such an assembly-based programming framework, enabling developers to easily define and realize complex distributed topologies as a construction of simpler blocks (e.g. rings, grids). It does so by harnessing the power of self-organizing overlays, that is made accessible to developers through a high-level Domain Specific Language and self-stabilizing run-time. Our evaluation further shows that our approach is generic, expressive, low-overhead and robust.

Abstract

We compared the effects of two media (paper vs. computer) on reading comprehension and memorization among students in their third or fourth year of secondary school. To assess comprehension, we constructed and validated a text with a carefully controlled hierarchical structure, accompanied by a questionnaire containing three types of questions (surface, semantic, inference). Memory of the text was assessed with a test based on the Remember-Know (R/K) paradigm. The results of the comprehension and R/K tests indicated that there was no difference between the two media. Regardless of medium, surface comprehension was better than either semantic or inference comprehension. The R/K test indicated that memorization was better for the surface elements of the text (more R than K responses). In conclusion, overall results show that if we fulfil?all the conditions of paper-based versus computerized presentation (text structure, presentation on a single page, screen size, several types of questions measuring comprehension and memory performances), reading performances are not significantly different. The objective was to compare reading from paper versus computers.We developed a one-page text with a specific structure.We measured comprehension and memorization from paper and computer.Results did not reveal any difference between paper and computer.

International audience; Each domain, along with its knowledge base, changes over time and every timeframe is centered on specific topics that emerge from different ongoing research projects. As searching for relevant resources is a time-consuming process, the automatic extraction of the most important and relevant articles from a domain becomes essential in supporting researchers in their day-today activities. The proposed analysis extends other previous researches focused on extracting co-citations between the papers, with the purpose of comparing their overall importance within the domain from a semantic perspective. Our method focuses on the semantic analysis of paper abstracts by using Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques such as Latent Semantic Analysis, Latent Dirichlet Allocation or specific ontology distances, i.e., WordNet. Moreover, the defined mechanisms are enforced on two different subdomains from the corpora generated around the keywords " e-learning " and " computer ". Graph visual representations are used to highlight the keywords of each subdomain, links among concepts and between articles, as well as specific document similarity views, or scores reflecting the keyword-abstract overlaps. In the end, conclusions and future improvements are presented, emphasizing nevertheless the key elements of our research support framework.

International audience; The need for safety and comfort in vehicular environments has led to a lot of research in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET), ranging from vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications to security. As regards the latter aspect, mostly the focus has been on resorting to public key infrastructure (PKI) and its related concepts. Moreover, methods used to detect the most feared security attacks are based almost exclusively on the use of physical characteristics as well as PKI concepts or both. However with emerging technologies that enable connecting a vehicle to external resources, VANET is evolving, thus inheriting security threats that are common place in conventional IT systems. Therefore, as it is shown in the paper, VANET security must go beyond cryptographic-centric mechanisms that are commonly used for providing data security in wireless environment

Abstract

Smart Cameras associate image sensing and processing in a unique device. Within smart cameras, embedded systems are deployed to extract high level image features with pixel-wise computationally intensive operations. Given the limited computational capabilities of embedded devices, Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) architectures are well suited to speed-up the processing performance. Such architectures are able to process high throughput data while providing a modular and flexible approach. However, one of the biggest issues in FPGA-based systems is the important development time compared to conventional computer vision design techniques.Device programmability and algorithm transcription become a major concern for FPGA developers. Low-level programming languages such as VHDL or Verilog constrain designers of computer vision systems to manage by themselves the whole internal circuitry (communication drivers, modules synchronization, interfaces...) of their system. In a context of growing productivity gaps, the reduction of system development time is an ever greater concern. A higher level description has high potential to increase design added value by abstracting away low-level hardware considerations.

Abstract

International audience; Digital pen technology has allowed for the easy transfer of pen data from paper to the computer. However, linking handwritten content with the digital world remains a hard problem as it requires the translation of unstructured and highly personal vocabularies into structured ones that computers can easily understand and process. Automatic recognition can help to this direction, but as it is not always reliable, solutions require the active cooperation between users and recognition algorithms. This work examines the use of portable touch-screen devices in connection with pen and paper to help users direct and refine the interpretation of their strokes on paper. We explore four techniques of bimanual interaction that combine touch and pen-writing, where user attention is divided between the original strokes on paper and their interpretation by the electronic device. We demonstrate the techniques through a mobile interface for writing music that complements the automatic recognition with interactive user-driven interpretation. An experiment evaluates the four techniques and provides insights about their strengths and limitations.

Abstract

International audience; Interest and need for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) havesignicantly increased recently. WBAN consists of miniaturized sensors de-signed to collect and transmit data through wireless network, enabling medicalspecialists to monitor patients during their normal daily life and providing realtime opinions for medical diagnosis. Many wireless technologies have provedthemselves in WBAN applications, while others are still under investigations.The choice of the technology to adopt may depend on the disease to moni-tor and the performance requirements, i.e. reliability, latency and data rate.In addition, the suitable sensor is essential when seeking to extract the datarelated to a medical measure.This paper aims at surveying the wireless technologies used in WBAN sys-tems. In addition to a detailed survey on the existing technologies, the use ofthe emerging Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies, and thefuture 5G, B5G and 6G is investigated, where the suitability of these technolo-gies to WBAN applications is studied from several perspectives. Furthermore,medical applications of WBAN are discussed by presenting their methodolo-gies, the adopted wireless technologies and the used sensors. Given that eachmedical application requires the appropriate sensor to extract the data, wehighlight a wide range of the sensors used in the market for medical systems.Recent and future challenges in WBAN systems are given related to the powerconsumption, the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies inWBAN and others.

Abstract

Background The early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly desirable but remains a challenging task, which requires a set of cognitive tests and hours of clinical examinations. In addition, variations of such symptoms exist, which can make the identification of ASD even more difficult. Although diagnosis tests are largely developed by experts, they are still subject to human bias. In this respect, computer-assisted technologies can play a key role in supporting the screening process. Objective This paper follows on the path of using eye tracking as an integrated part of screening assessment in ASD based on the characteristic elements of the eye gaze. This study adds to the mounting efforts in using eye tracking technology to support the process of ASD screening Methods The proposed approach basically aims to integrate eye tracking with visualization and machine learning. A group of 59 school-aged participants took part in the study. The participants were invited to watch a set of age-appropriate photographs and videos related to social cognition. Initially, eye-tracking scanpaths were transformed into a visual representation as a set of images. Subsequently, a convolutional neural network was trained to perform the image classification task. Results The experimental results demonstrated that the visual representation could simplify the diagnostic task and also attained high accuracy. Specifically, the convolutional neural network model could achieve a promising classification accuracy. This largely suggests that visualizations could successfully encode the information of gaze motion and its underlying dynamics. Further, we explored possible correlations between the autism severity and the dynamics of eye movement based on the maximal information coefficient. The findings primarily show that the combination of eye tracking, visualization, and machine learning have strong potential in developing an objective tool to assist in the screening of ASD. Conclusions Broadly speaking, the approach we propose could be transferable to screening for other disorders, particularly neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents S-Notebook, a tool that makes it possible to "extend" mobile devices with augmented paper. Paper is used to overcome the physical limitations of mobile devices by offering ad- ditional space to annotate digital files and to easily create relation- ships between them. S-Notebook allows users to link paper annota- tions or drawings to anchors in digital files without having to learn pre-defined pen gestures. The systems stores meta data such as spa- tial or temporal location of anchors in the document as well as the zoom level of the view. Tapping on notes with the digital pen make appear the corresponding documents as displayed when the notes were taken. A given piece of augmented paper can contain notes as- sociated to several documents, possibliy at several locations. The annotation space can thus serve as a simple way to relate various pieces of one or several digital documents between them. When the user shares his notes, the piece of paper becomes a tangible to- ken that virtually contains digital information.

Abstract

International audience; We present paper substrates, interactive paper components that support the creation and manipulation of complex musical data. Substrates take different forms, from whole pages to movable strips, and contain or control typed data representations. We conducted participatory design sessions with five professional musicians with extensive experience with music creation tools. All generated innovative uses of paper substrates, manipulating their data, linking multiple representation layers and creating modular, reusable paper elements. The substrates reflect the structure of their computer-based data, but in a much more flexible and adaptable form. We use their prototypes to provide concrete examples of substrates, identify their roles, properties and functions. Finally, we explore their physical and interaction design with an interactive prototype.

International audience; We propose a hybrid method for the extraction and characterization of citations in scientific papers using machine learning combined with rule-based approaches. Our protocol consists of the extraction of metadata, bibliography parsing, section titles processing, and find-grained semantic annotation on the sentence level of texts. This allows us to generate Linked Open Data from a set of research papers in XML.

Abstract

International audience; Benchmarking watermarking systems now goes beyond only evaluating the ability of the embedded watermark to with- stand common signal primitives such as filtering, resampling, lossy compression, D/A-A/D conversions, etc. Evaluation procedures have to consider how much information leaks from a watermarking system since such knowledge could prove most helpful to design very powerful attacks. This paper further refines an attack on dirty paper watermarking schemes which relies on security weaknesses i.e. information leakage. In particular, additional constraints are introduced to be able to handle ‘complex' trellises. Moreover, the ef- ficiency of this attack has been evaluated for different trel- lis configurations. Quite counter-intuitively, increasing the number of states in the trellis seems to enhance both the robustness and the security of the system.

Abstract

International audience; This paper analyses the security of dirty paper trellis (DPT) watermarking schemes which use both informed coding and informed em- bedding. After recalling the principles of message embedding with DPT watermarking, the secret parameters of the scheme are highlighted. The security weaknesses of DPT watermarking are then presented: in the wa- termarked contents only attack (WOA) setup, the watermarked data-set exhibits clusters corresponding to the different patterns attached to the arcs of the trellis. The K-means clustering algorithm is used to estimate these patterns and a co-occurrence analysis is performed to retrieve the connectivity of the trellis. Experimental results demonstrate that it is possible to accurately estimate the trellis configuration, which enables to perform attacks much more efficient than simple additive white Gaus- sian noise (AWGN).

International audience; From a European technological and industrial perspective of the 20th century, Knowledge Management (KM) was viewed as the next step towards reaching a smart knowledge-based economy. But today, in the 21th century of big data and fast moving information, we argue that KM is not enough for reaching a qualitative human-based post-industrial society. We need a broader view in order to understand user needs and respond to their personal desires. In this endeavor, Living labs are a good way to reposition creative people at the center of technologies. But we need also methodologies and tools to accompany the transition from a competitive economy to a more sustainable society. We experimented this move at University of Reunion Island in the domain of e-education. We conceived a new paradigm called Sign Management (SM) for enhancing content producers with multimedia tools on a Creativity Platform. A methodology for co-designing educational e-services was applied in both natural (biodiversity) and cultural (music) domains in order that linear knowledge transmission lets place to an iterative know-how sharing approach between teachers and learners. This sign-based methodology serves as a condition for opening the era of Semiotic Web (Web of Signs) over Semantic Web (Web of Things). The objective is to co-create qualitative educational e-services with people based on a more natural/artificial and intelligent approach in the frame of Living labs.

Abstract

International audience; Software development for electronic games has remarkable performance and portability requirements, and the system and low-level languages usually provide those. This ecosystem became homogeneous at commercial levels around C and C++, both for open source or proprietary solutions. However, innovations brought other possibilities that are still growing in this area, including Rust and other system languages. Rust has low-level language properties and modern security guarantees in access to memory, concurrency, dependency management, and portability. The Open Source game engine Amethyst has become a reference solution for game development in Rust, has a large and active community, and endeavors in being an alternative to current solutions. Amethyst brings parallelism and performance optimizations, with the advantages of the Rust language. This paper presents scripting concepts that allow the game logic to be implemented in an external interpreted language. We present a scripting module called Legion Script that was implemented for the entity and component system (ECS) called Legion, part of the Amethyst organization. As a Proof-of-Concept (POC), we perform the Python code interpretation using the Rust Foreign Function Interface (FFI) with CPython. This POC added scripting capabilities to Legion. We also discuss the benefit of using the alternative strategy of developing a POC before contributing to OSS communities in emergent technologies.

Abstract

Developers change models with clear intentions—e.g., for refactoring, defects removal, or evolution. However, in doing so, developers are often unaware of the consequences of their changes. Changes to one part of a model may affect other parts of the same model and/or even other models, possibly created and maintained by other developers. The consequences are incomplete changes and with it inconsistencies within or across models. Extensive works exist on detecting and repairing inconsistencies. However, the literature tends to focus on inconsistencies as errors in need of repairs rather than on incomplete changes in need of further propagation. Many changes are non-trivial and require a series of coordinated model changes. As developers start changing the model, intermittent inconsistencies arise with other parts of the model that developers have not yet changed. These inconsistencies are cues for incomplete change propagation. Resolving these inconsistencies should be done in a manner that is consistent with the original changes. We speak of consistent change propagation. This paper leverages classical inconsistency repair mechanisms to explore the vast search space of change propagation. Our approach not only suggests changes to repair a given inconsistency but also changes to repair inconsistencies caused by the aforementioned repair. In doing so, our approach follows the developer’s intent where subsequent changes may not contradict or backtrack earlier changes. We argue that consistent change propagation is essential for effective model-driven engineering. Our approach and its tool implementation were empirically assessed on 18 case studies from industry, academia, and GitHub to demonstrate its feasibility and scalability. A comparison with two versioned models shows that our approach identifies actual repair sequences that developers had chosen. Furthermore, an experiment involving 22 participants shows that our change propagation approach meets the workflow of how developers handle changes by always computing the sequence of repairs resulting from the change propagation.

Abstract

International audience; Mobile phone camera-based document video scan- ning is an interesting research problem which has entered into a new era with the emergence of widely used, processing capable and motion sensors equipped smartphones. We present our ongoing research on mobile phone camera-based document image mosaic reconstruction method for video scanning of paper documents. In this work, we have optimized the classic keypoint feature descriptor based image registration method, by employing the accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data. Experimental results are evaluated using optical character recognition (OCR) on the reconstructed mosaic from mobile phone camera-based video scanning of paper documents.

Abstract

Metabolomics studies aim at reporting a metabolic signature (list of metabolites) related to a particular experimental condition. These signatures are instrumental in the identification of biomarkers or classification of individuals, however their biological and physiological interpretation remains a challenge. Overcoming this challenge is critical when aiming to associate metabolic signatures with potential pathological outcomes. To support this task, we introduce FORUM: a Knowledge Graph (KG) providing a semantic representation of relations between chemicals and biomedical concepts, built from a federation of life science databases and scientific literature repositories. An important number of scientific articles discuss relations between chemical compounds and biomedical concepts in various contexts, from biomarkers to therapeutic uses. The extraction of these statements and their interconnection in a graph structure can thus allow us to identify and explore relations strongly supported in the scientific literature.The use of a Semantic Web framework on biological data allows us to apply ontological based reasoning to infer new relations between entities. We show that these new relations provide different levels of abstraction and could open the path to new hypotheses. We estimate the statistical relevance of each extracted relation, explicit or inferred, using an enrichment analysis, and instantiate them as new knowledge in the KG to support results interpretation/further inquiries. Beyond this result, FORUM can also provide insights into complex biological questions and the extracted information could then be used for further developments.Containing more than 8 billion triples and providing more than 8 million relations, FORUM leverages the increasing availability of linked datasets in life science and is built in agreement with FAIR principles. A web interface to browse and download the extracted relations, as well as a SPARQL endpoint to directly probe the whole FORUM knowledge graph, are available at https://forum-webapp.semantic-metabolomics.fr. The code needed to reproduce the triplestore is available at https://github.com/eMetaboHUB/Forum-DiseasesChem.

Abstract

In the French West Indies, more than 20 species of cetaceans have been observed over the last decades. The recognition of this hot spot of biodiversity of marine mammals observed in the French Exclusive Economic Zone of the West Indies motivated the French government to create in 2010 a marine protected area (MPA) dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals: the Agoa sanctuary. Threats that cetacean populations face are multiple but well-documented. Cetacean conservation can only be achieved if relevant and reliable data are available, starting by occurrence data. In the Guadeloupe archipelago, and in addition to some data collected by the Agoa sanctuary, occurrence data are mainly available through the contribution of citizen science and of local stakeholders (i.e., non-profit organizations (NPO) and whale-watchers). However, no observation network has been coordinated and no standards exist for cetacean presence data collection and management.In recent years, several whale watchers and NPOs regularly collected cetacean observation data around the Guadeloupe archipelago. These observations are highly valuable, often made by experienced observers able to accurately distinguish between species, and some of them were used for scientific targeted studies Stevick et al. 2016, Heenehan et al. 2019, Stevick et al. 2018, Kennedy et al. 2014. Our objective was to gather datasets from three Guadeloupean whale watchers, two NPOs and the Agoa sanctuary, that agreed to share their data. These heterogeneous data went through a careful process of curation and standardization in order to create a new extended database, using a newly designed metadata set. This aggregated dataset contains a total of 4,704 records of 21 species collected in the Guadeloupe Archipelago from 2000 to 2019. The database was called Kakila ("who is there?" in Guadeloupean Creole). The Kakila database was developed following the FAIR principles with the ultimate objective of ensuring sustainability. All these data were transferred into the PNDB repository (Pole National de Données de Biodiversité, Biodiversity French Data Hub, https://www.pndb.fr).In the Agoa sanctuary and surrounding waters, marine mammals have to interact with increasing anthropogenic pressure from growing human activities. In this context, the Kakila database fulfils the need for an organised system to structure marine mammal occurrences collected by multiple local stakeholders with a common objective: contribute to the knowledge and conservation of cetaceans living in the French Antilles waters. Much needed data analysis will enable to identify high cetacean presence areas, to document the presence of rarer species, and to determine areas of possible negative interactions with anthropogenic activities.

Abstract

We report the aperiodic titanate Ba10Y6Ti4O27 with a room‐temperature thermal conductivity that equals the lowest reported for an oxide. The structure is characterised by discontinuous occupancy modulation of each of the sites and can be considered as a quasicrystal. The resulting localisation of lattice vibrations suppresses phonon transport of heat. This new lead material for low‐thermal‐conductivity oxides is metastable and located within a quaternary phase field that has been previously explored. Its isolation thus requires a precisely defined synthetic protocol. The necessary narrowing of the search space for experimental investigation was achieved by evaluation of titanate crystal chemistry, prediction of unexplored structural motifs that would favour synthetically accessible new compositions, and assessment of their properties with machine‐learning models., Ba10Y6Ti4O27 has a complex aperiodic structure with the lowest thermal conductivity of any first‐transition‐series oxide. It is metastable, which makes it challenging to identify. Experimental exploration was focused sufficiently by structure prediction and property‐targeted machine learning to enable the isolation of this material (see picture), whose structural motifs provide new insight into the control of heat transport.

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how the creativity of pupils and teachers is nurtured through the use of a virtual world (VW) within a sociotechnical network affecting pupils’ learning in a pilot secondary school. Design/methodology/approach The analysis is the result of a pluri-disciplinary systemic analysis involving didactics, sociology, psychology and management science on an individual, collective and systemic scale. This participatory action research is based on interviews and systematic observations in class, in-world and in the global ecosystem. Linguistic and multimodal analysis is applied to the data, through teacher monographs that hint at the teachers’ activity. Findings Pupils’ and teachers’ creativity appeared to be anchored within four main interdependent nurturing conditions the personal inclinations and professional interactions in the sociotechnical network sustaining the VW; a creative regulation allowing compromises with the institutional constraints of pedagogical control; avatars and 3 D boundary objects that act as a motor of teachers-pupils inquiry and creativity; the sociotechnical network that contributes, through the actors’ play, to bringing the organisational rules of the school towards an innovation trajectory, that in turns mediates success in the use and the adoption of the new technology. Research limitations/implications Although this is a study within a specific school, the findings can be put to use by other pedagogical teams who would wish to integrate a VW to re-engage pupils. Practical implications The participatory design processes taking place within a sociotechnical network support teachers in the building of Virtual World scenarios negotiated with researchers and start-up developers. Social implications The pedagogical use of a virtual world opens new learning engagement opportunities for the pupils through enhanced experiential learning and sustains the transformation of teachers’ professionality. Originality/value The authors’ approach differs from the previous educational VW literature, in that they integrate the teachers’ creativity and their pedagogical scripts into their study, within a systemic approach, thus requiring a wider theoretical framework, necessary for understanding the building of strategies and knowledge that foster teachers’ and pupils’ creativity in educational settings using a VW.

Abstract

Background Language mapping during awake brain surgery is currently a standard procedure. However, mapping is rarely performed for other cognitive functions that are important for social interaction, such as visuospatial cognition and nonverbal language, including facial expressions and eye gaze. The main reason for this omission is the lack of tasks that are fully compatible with the restrictive environment of an operating room and awake brain surgery procedures. Objective This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a virtual reality headset equipped with an eye-tracking device that is able to promote an immersive visuospatial and social virtual reality (VR) experience for patients undergoing awake craniotomy. Methods We recruited 15 patients with brain tumors near language and/or motor areas. Language mapping was performed with a naming task, DO 80, presented on a computer tablet and then in 2D and 3D via the VRH. Patients were also immersed in a visuospatial and social VR experience. Results None of the patients experienced VR sickness, whereas 2 patients had an intraoperative focal seizure without consequence; there was no reason to attribute these seizures to virtual reality headset use. The patients were able to perform the VR tasks. Eye tracking was functional, enabling the medical team to analyze the patients’ attention and exploration of the visual field of the virtual reality headset directly. Conclusions We found that it is possible and safe to immerse the patient in an interactive virtual environment during awake brain surgery, paving the way for new VR-based brain mapping procedures. Abstract

International audience; A Tonnetz, or "tone-network" in German, is a two- dimensional representation of the relationships among musical pitches. In this paper, we present PaperTonnetz, a tool that lets musicians explore and compose music with Tonnetz representations by making gestures on interactive paper. In addition to triggering musical notes with the pen as a button based-interface, the drawn gestures become interactive paths that can be used as chords or melodies to support composition.

International audience; Rigorous system design requires the use of a single powerful component framework allowing the representation of the designed system at different levels of detail, from application software to its implementation. This is essential for ensuring the overall coherency and correctness. The paper introduces a rigorous design flow based on the BIP (Behavior, Interaction, Priority) component framework [1]. This design flow relies on several, tool-supported, source-to-source transformations allowing to progressively and correctly transform high level application software towards efficient implementations for specific platforms.

Abstract

Motivation The principle of Breiman's random forest (RF) is to build and assemble complementary classification trees in a way that maximizes their variability. We propose a new type of random forest that disobeys Breiman’s principles and involves building trees with no classification errors in very large quantities. We used a new type of decision tree that uses a neuron at each node as well as an in-innovative half Christmas tree structure. With these new RFs, we developed a score, based on a family of ten new statistical information criteria, called Nguyen information criteria (NICs), to evaluate the predictive qualities of features in three dimensions. Results The first NIC allowed the Akaike information criterion to be minimized more quickly than data obtained with the Gini index when the features were introduced in a logistic regression model. The selected features based on the NICScore showed a slight advantage compared to the support vector machines—recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) method. We demonstrate that the inclusion of artificial neurons in tree nodes allows a large number of classifiers in the same node to be taken into account simultaneously and results in perfect trees without classification errors.
