In the paper by Inna Ganschow, the camp experience in the Soviet Union as a result of forced conscription will be treated, specifically in its artistic processing: secretly written diaries and letters by Luxembourg Wehrmacht soldiers. Contemporary historical research today calls them ego documents – private, handwritten texts of a personal nature. The range of texts to be examined in the lecture ranges from the smuggled out notes and letters that their released comrades took with them to Luxembourg, through diaries, speeches and self-made dictionaries to poems, short stories and drawings, some of which were in the camp and some immediately after the return from Tambov and other camps in the Soviet Union. The focus is on the question of dealing with the thesis of the Auschwitz concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl, psychiatrist and neurologist from Vienna, that the meaning of camp life - logotherapy - can have a self-healing effect and increase the self-healing powers, which increases the chances of survival.

Fischer The emergence of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) is a threat to public health, because of their resistance to clinically important carbapenem antibiotics. The emergence of CPE in meat-producing animals is particularly worrying because consumption of meat contaminated with resistant bacteria similar to CPE, such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, contributed to colonization in humans worldwide. Currently, no data on the transmission of CPE in livestock is available. We performed a transmission experiment to quantify the transmission of CPE between broilers to fill this knowledge gap and to compare the transmission rates of CPE and other antibiotic-resistant E. coli. A total of 180 Ross 308 broiler chickens were distributed on the day of hatch (day 0) over 12 pens. On day 5, half of the chickens in each pen were orally inoculated with 5·102 colony-forming units of CPE, ESBL, or chloramphenicol-resistant E. coli (catA1). Amoxicillin drinking water treatment was given twice daily in 6 of the 12 pens from days 2 to 6 to evaluate the effect of antibiotic treatment on the transmission rates. Cloacal swabs of all animals were taken to determine the number of infectious broilers. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to quantify the transmission of the E. coli strains. E. coli can survive in the environment and serve as a reservoir. Therefore, the susceptible-infectious transmission model was adapted to account for the transmission of resistant bacteria from the environment. In addition, the caecal microbiome was analyzed on day 5 and at the end of the experiment on day 14 to assess the relationship between the caecal microbiome and the transmission rates. The transmission rates of CPE were 52 – 68 per cent lower compared to ESBL and catA1, but it is not clear if these differences were caused by differences between the resistance genes or between the E. coli strains. Differences between the groups in transmission rates and microbiome diversity did not correspond to each other, indicating that differences in transmission rates were probably not caused by major differences in the community structure in the caecal microbiome. Amoxicillin treatment from day 2 to 6 increased the transmission rate more than three-fold in all inoculums. It also increased alpha-diversity compared to untreated animals on day 5, but not on day 14, suggesting only a temporary effect. Future research could incorporate more complex transmission models with different species of resistant bacteria into the Bayesian hierarchical model.

POEX 65 was a transdisciplinary experiment and event which took place in Copenhagen December 10-20, 1965. Short for ’POetry EXperiment’, POEX 65 was an exhibition event curated and created by Danish artist Knud Hvidberg (1948-91). It aimed at breaking the boundaries of artgenres, the false devision of professional and amateur, as well as the autonomy of the ‘work of art’ through the active use of technological and mediated platforms such as Flexowriters, Punch Paper Poetry, and Electronic Visual Music. As such, it was a very important event in Scandinavian media art history with more than 80 participants from 5 countries – from as different field as Conceptual Art, Electronic Music, Modern Jazz Poetry, Fluxus, Performance Art, Modern Dance, Concrete Poetry, Poesie Sonore etc... Nevertheless, POEX 65 somehow was forgotten – and almost erased from the academic memory and public archives. In 1990s POEX 65 was only hesitantly recognized as one of the most ambitious and original events of the 1960s in Denmark – but in short passages and footnotes. POEX 65 remained an enigma. The event itself has reached an almost total black-out 45 years later. The works themselves are not there anymore – or are but fragments. So why bother?This paper is about why it is extremely important to bother and care about the performative & collaborative media art practices like POEX 65. It is about the methodological and theoretical considerations put into the ongoing task conducted in the research project ‘The Unheard Avantgardes’ which is part of the LARM Infrastructure (focusing on sound in archives in Denmark and Northern Europa). But first and foremost, my paper will be about POEX 65 – the artists and their ideas, the art works, the contexts and the events; And the Paradigms of Post-Performative Media Art Practices at play in POEX 65.

This paper examines sight loss, identity, uncertain borders and power, using postcolonial theory. The novel explored in this paper, Blindsided, follows a British-Egyptian ophthalmologist to Mali and back to the UK. She experiences sight loss, and a consequent shift from doctor to patient, from subject to object, which forces her to explore her identity issues. She becomes no longer the observer but the examined. This novel sits in an underexplored intersection between postcolonial theory, literature, disability theory and medical humanities. It offers a perspective on the shifts in power that occur within sight loss, within relationships; it offers this paradigm in order to examine how we may unlearn privilege, and explore becoming other. The critical paper continues this exploration, providing a unique analysis of how people with sight loss have written about the subject in academia, literature and creative non-fiction. It delves into the porous boundaries between these different types of writing, and demonstrates that writing about sight loss is a way that people who experience it can seize back the power that society takes from them, gain authority, and take control of their own narrative.

This dissertation contains three independent papers on labor and demographic economics. In the first paper, I develop evidence, hypothesize, and empirically examine the effects of different types of prior experience of founders on annual job creation in new ventures. I use a two-stage estimation method; a random-effects negative binomial model (second stage) corrected for survival bias using a discrete-time hazard model (first stage). The paper adds to the literature by examining how the impact of founder experience on job creation changes under uncertainty using high-tech industries and industry recession as proxies for uncertainty., In the second paper, I utilize an intersectionality framework of gender and race/ethnicity to examine retention in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce, employing a multinomial/binary logit framework. I also examine the factors impacting the movement of STEM graduates either into STEM-unrelated jobs or out of the labor force. The paper aims to contribute to the existing literature by accommodating a switch to career pathways that require STEM expertise in non-STEM environments as well., In the third paper, I explore whether the proportion of women in leadership positions (leadership diversity) is lower in the STEM sectors than in the non-STEM sector at both low- and high-level leadership positions. I then examine whether the gender gap in leadership attainment in STEM occupations is related to occupational sex composition. To achieve this, the paper applies an endogenous switching probit model to account for workers’ self-selection into public and private sectors.

Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are two large-scale safety net programs in the U.S. that provide public assistance to the low-income population. Over the years both programs have undergone several policy changes and have evolved to cover more needy individuals. This three-paper dissertation is a culmination of three research studies, two of which examine the effect of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Medicaid expansion on outcomes of realized access to dental care i.e., dental visits and out-of-pocket dental care spending, respectively, while the third paper explores the relationship between SNAP participation and dental visits (realized access), and between SNAP participation and unmet dental care need due to cost (perceived access)., The few studies that have examined the impact of the Medicaid expansion on dental visits utilization have shown somewhat mixed findings and are mostly limited to examining early impacts (1-2 years post-expansion). Thus, Study I of this dissertation examined the longer-term impacts of states’ Medicaid expansions on dental visits utilization, by their adult dental benefits coverage level. Restricted data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) for the years 2011 through 2017 were obtained; the sample included adults aged 21-64 years with income up to 138% of Federal Poverty Level. A quasi-experimental Difference-In-Difference (DID) study design was used to examine the overall and year-by-year impacts of the Medicaid expansion on annual dental visits based on a states’ adult dental benefits coverage level (i.e., extensive, limited, and emergency-only/no benefits). Overall, expansion states, compared to non-expansion states, saw a 3-6 percentage point increase in annual dental visits in the post-expansion period (2014-2017), relative to the pre-expansion period (2011-2013). Year-by-year examinations revealed that the Medicaid expansion was associated with a significant increase in the likelihood of an annual dental visit among low-income adults in states with extensive benefits in 2014 (nearly 5 percentage points), and in states with limited and emergency-only/no dental benefits in both 2014 (6 percentage points for both) and 2016 (4 and 5 percentage points, respectively)., Expanding Medicaid also has the potential to reduce out-of-pocket dental care spending among low-income adults gaining coverage through Medicaid, especially among states that provide comprehensive adult dental benefits. Thus, Study II of this dissertation examined the impact of states’ Medicaid expansion on out-of-pocket dental care spending among low-income adults residing in states that provided extensive adult dental benefits. A DID study design with a two-part (hurdle) modeling approach was utilized to analyze post-expansion year-by-year changes in: a) the probability of incurring any out-of-pocket dental spending, and b) the amount of out-of-pocket spending (conditional on any spending) between expansion states with extensive benefits and non-expansion states. Overall, a greater proportion of adults in expansion states with extensive dental benefits (58%) reported zero dollars in out-of-pocket dental care spending, compared to those in non-expansion states (31%). Our DID analysis found that, compared to non-expansion states, adults residing in states that provided extensive adult dental benefits and expanded Medicaid were significantly less likely to incur any out-of-pocket dental spending in the first two years of implementing the expansion (2014 and 2015)., There is growing interest in examining SNAP’s spillover impacts on improving healthcare access and outcomes, postulated to be due to SNAP’s ability to reduce food-insecurity thereby potentially freeing up some financial and cognitive resources to seek care. Thus, Study 3 of this dissertation examined the association between participation in SNAP and realized and perceived access to dental care among low-income adults. A sample of SNAP income-eligible adults aged 19-64 was created by pooling MEPS data for the years 2011 to 2017. Applying a propensity score method to control for important differences in characteristics between participants and eligible non-participants, and using a Doubly-Robust approach, multivariable logistic regressions modelling the impact of SNAP participation on annual dental visits and unmet dental care need due to cost were performed. Interestingly, we found that SNAP participants, compared to eligible non-participants, have significantly lower odds of having an annual dental visit (approximately 20%) and significantly greater odds of reporting unmet dental care need due to cost (approximately 40%)., In conclusion, the results of the three studies in this dissertation provide some important insights into the dental care access impacts of the ACA’s Medicaid expansion and provide foundational evidence on the relationship between participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and dental care access among low-income adults. Results from Study I are suggestive of a positive link between the expansion of Medicaid and increased dental visits. However, longer-term impacts were less consistent and varied based on states’ adult dental coverage level thereby warranting further research. Study II results are encouraging and show that providing comprehensive dental benefits in Medicaid adult dental programs is protective against incurring any out-of-pocket expense for those who utilize dental care, with the potential to benefit more low-income individuals when these states expand Medicaid eligibility. Lastly, Study III results show that SNAP participation is associated with lower dental visits utilization and greater unmet dental care need due to cost. While we postulate that this may be due to several reasons, such as, SNAP benefits not being enough to offset non-food costs, and perhaps, the most disadvantaged of all SNAP-eligible families who tend to have fewer resources being more likely to enroll in the program, further research is needed to fully investigate and understand the underlying causal mechanisms through which these associations operate.

International audience; This paper is concerned with analytical developments of results firstly introduced by the authors in [1]. These developments are devoted to the optimization of upper bounds of the interval covariance matrices appearing in the Interval Kalman Filter [2]. The proposed study is mainly highlighted through two aspects. Firstly, the optimization is further performed by considering a class of upper bounds and minimizing the traces of these bounds in two stages (in terms of a gain matrix and then with respect to a scalar parameter). Secondly, the paper provides conditions under which the optimal trace value is controlled and hence the proposed Algorithm in [1], namely Optimal Upper Bound Interval Kalman Filter (OUBIKF), is ensured to perform with stability (i.e. without width explosion of the resulting interval estimators). Also under these conditions, the OUBIKF Algorithm, having a similar structure of the Standard Kalman Filter (SKF), is ensured to get a smaller trace upper bound of the covariance matrices in the correction step than the one in the prediction step. Numerical simulations based on anautomotive model is performed to illustrate the developed results.

This dissertation focuses on strategies that entrepreneurs use to start and grow a startup. The first chapter studies the link between entrepreneurial programs and types of founders. Specifically, it studies the return for entrepreneurs who participated in accelerator programs that require founders to give up equity to participate in the program compared to founders that graduated from accelerators that do not require equity. The second chapter qualifies the textual structure of ICOs’ white papers using natural language processing (NLP) following a methodology introduced by Toubia et al., (2021). The chapter focuses on the relationship between speed, volume, and circuitousness and the success of ICOs., In Chapter 1, I exploit data on startups that graduated from accelerators that are heterogeneous in equity design. I study the dilemma of going big or staying small that has been challenging entrepreneurs to wisely decide whether to trade equity in exchange for capital investment and have a more valuable equity share or retain a majority equity stake and look for noteworthy opportunities in later stages. The major heterogeneity among accelerators that I focus on is equity investment and early-stage seed funding. Using matched sample analysis, I provide evidence that although participating in an equity-investment accelerator has beneficial effects on the post-accelerator performance of portfolio companies to reach the next round of fundraising faster, they raise less capital in 12-month, 18-month, and 24-month time horizons after graduation in comparison to graduates of equity-free accelerators. In fact, I find that founders with more years of corporate experience and higher-quality business ideas tend to shorten the path to success by participating in equity-investment accelerators. On the other hand, consistent with Hallen et al. (2020) who believe that a learning mechanism is the primary cause of accelerator effects on venture development, I find that, while ventures are heterogeneous and they learn at different rates and different depths, some entrepreneurs have already learned what to do, and it is accelerator equity design and seed investment that negatively impacts acceleration and slows down venture growth., Chapter 2 exploits the content of white papers that are published by Initial Coin Offering (ICO) campaigns. We study information exchanged between ICOs and investors via disclosed information in 2149 ICO white papers. We employ natural language processing (NLP) to quantify the structure of white papers and demonstrate their contribution to the success of ICOs. Following the content analysis procedure by Toubia et al. (2021), we elicit information from ICO textual sources by calculating three measures namely, speed, volume, and circuitousness. Our findings show that ICO projects with a well-written white paper that disclose risk and routinely return to previously discussed topics (i.e., circuitousness) are likely to raise more funds. Consistent with this, white papers that cover more ground (i.e., volume) contribute positively to the successful outcomes of ICO fundraising campaigns. In contrast, white papers that transit quickly between topics (i.e., speed) are less likely to have a positive impact.

This paper examines changes in occupational crowding of immigrant women in frontline industries in the United States during the onset of COVID-19, and we contextualize their experiences against the backdrop of broader race-based and gender-based occupational crowding. Building on the occupational crowding hypothesis, which suggests that marginalized workers are crowded in a small number of occupations to prop up wages of socially-privileged workers, we hypothesize that immigrant, Black, and Hispanic workers were shunted into frontline work to prop up the health of others during the pandemic. Our analysis of American Community Survey microdata indicates that immigrant workers, particularly immigrant women, were increasingly crowded in frontline work during the onset of the pandemic. We also find that US-born Black and Hispanic workers disproportionately faced COVID-19 exposure in their work, but were not increasingly crowded into frontline occupations following the onset of the pandemic. The paper also provides a rationale for considering the occupational crowding hypothesis along the dimensions of both wages and occupational health.

My dissertation recovers the abolitionist might of the first nursing narrative of the U.S. Civil War, Louisa May Alcott’s Hospital Sketches (1863), which was published as a series of letters in Boston’s Commonwealth newspaper (1862-1896) in summer 1863 before its collection in a volume published by journalist James Redpath in fall 1863. As I uncover the abolitionist context of the original Sketches, I employ Alcott’s letters, the most enduring literary work to emerge from the pages of the Commonwealth, as an opportunity to examine the paper’s first year. Using practices of periodicals studies, I scrutinize the conditions and context in which the paper was produced in order to assess its goals, methods, and audience. I apply the same methods in my assessment of Hospital Sketches, tracing the reception of the letters in press reviews. I examine the founding of the Commonwealth in September 1862 just before the announcement of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22 and discuss its principled editors Moncure D. Conway and Franklin B. Sanborn along with its funder George Luther Stearns. Exploring their connection to John Brown’s militant abolitionism in the 1850s, I consider the paper’s aim to transform the war to preserve the union into a conflict against slavery after July 1862’s Second Confiscation Act and the Militia Act suggested the possibility. Additionally, I probe the way the Commonwealth initially defined itself as fully engaged in wartime political strategy, positioning itself against Boston’s powerhouse abolitionist newspaper and another Stearns-funded venture, The Liberator., Treating Alcott’s contributions during the weekly’s first year as a body of work that deserves comprehensive evaluation, I discuss her January 1863 short story “M.L.” alongside her series “Letters from the Mountains” and poem “Busy Bessie, At Her Spinning Wheel,” both published in fall 1863, noting Alcott’s use of the picturesque and travel sketches in her Commonwealth publications. I then discuss Hospital Sketches as it appeared in the weekly and in its collected edition, arguing that the two chapters Alcott added for the august compilation encourage an appraisal of the text as an abolitionist travel sketch. Finally, I track the development of the Sketches during the 1860s, concluding with their illustration by Alcott’s friend Elizabeth Greene in 1869’s Hospital Sketches and Camp and Fireside Stories., My dissertation shows Alcott exercising her literary dexterity by adapting Hospital Sketches for different audiences when she found success as a professional writer. In examining the Commonwealth, I also depict the context in which readers originally encountered her hospital drama and trace responses to it through press reviews and advertisements. By tying Hospital Sketches to the paper’s abolitionism, I not only investigate the use of literature to accelerate social reforms, but I also situate literary output as a primary strategy of the mid-war abolitionist effort. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, literature could be deployed rhetorically to imagine reconstructive possibility as the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation flourished.

In response to concerns about university students stress and mental health, many universities offer animal visitation programs (AVPs). While popular, nothing is known about the role of students’ separation anxiety from their childhood pet(s) either in shaping experiences during the transition to university, their engagement in available AVPs, or their effects. Drawn from a random sample of first-year university students (N=2,000), this dissertation recruited incoming students separated from their family pet, and randomly assigned them to a semester long, bi-weekly AVP program featuring 2-hour sessions (N=105) or a waitlist control condition (N=104). Together, three independent manuscripts examine 1) the prevalence and predictors of pet separation anxiety (PSA); 2) the role of PSA and psychological mood symptoms predicting AVP uptake (e.g., frequency, duration); and 3) the efficacy of AVP on trajectories of psychological risk and resilience. Results from Paper 1 revealed that 1 in 4 students reported moderate-severe PSA during their first week on campus. Symptom severity was significantly related to people-substituting-pet-attachment (β=0.19, p=0.015), spending more time with pets compared to other pet owners (β=0.24, p=0.002), talking to pets (β=0.19, p=0.009), and pet-co-sleeping (β=0.16, p=0.027). Results from Paper 2 revealed that early program attendance was informed by students’ mental health history (B= -0.876, p=0.03, OR=0.417), early semester stress (B= -0.177, p=0.04, OR=0.838) and anxiety (B= 0.179, p=0.01, OR=1.196). Overall attendance frequency (β=-0.342, p=0.004, d=0.697) and duration (β=-0.286, p=0.03, d=0.529) were negatively associated with high PSA. Results from Paper 3 showed students in the AVP condition had more adaptive trajectory slopes for depression (B=-3.05, p=0.01, d=0.514), worry (B=-3.92, p=0.04, d=0.416,) stress, (B=-1.94, p=0.05, d=0.386), and self-compassion (B=4.03, p=3 sessions) and high PSA were controlled. This dissertation suggests PSA is important both in considering students' risk during the transition to university, the influence on uptake of AVPs and their effects on psychological wellbeing. In sum, while AVPs are considered a resource for students missing their pets, high PSA students are less likely to attend AVPs efficacious in preventing declines in psychological adjustment during what many experience as a stressful transition.

Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods are a class of Monte Carlo methods that are used to obtain random samples of a high dimensional random variable in a sequential fashion. Many problems encountered in applications often involve different types of constraints. These constraints can make the problem much more challenging. In this paper, we formulate a general framework of using SMC for constrained sampling problems based on forward and backward pilot resampling strategies. We review some existing methods under the framework and develop several new algorithms. It is noted that all information observed or imposed on the underlying system can be viewed as constraints. Hence the approach outlined in this paper can be useful in many applications.

A man in his 70s was referred to the endocrine surgery department after incidental finding of hypercalcaemia during preoperative work-up for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. The patient reported severe fatigue and malaise with no previous history of nephrolithiasis or osteoporosis. After biochemical confirmation of primary hyperparathyroidism, localisation studies suggested multiple gland disease. Intraoperatively, three enlarged parathyroid adenomas were found and excised. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination revealed triple water clear cell (WCC) parathyroid adenomas. Adenomas being entirely composed of WCCs are rare. In addition, triple adenomas are so rare that their existence is disputed by some authors. The present paper reports on an extremely rare case of a patient suffering from triple parathyroid adenomas composed entirely of WCCs. To our knowledge, this is the first such reported case in the English language literature.

The definition of the mandibular angle profile is a common challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Accurate diagnosis and treatment planning are mandatory in order to properly manage soft and hard tissues. The use of several biomaterials is described in the literature. The present paper reports the treatment of a defect in the right mandibular angle in otomandibular syndrome sequelae by positioning polyetheretherketone (PEEK) patient-specific implants (PSI) in a 25-year-old patient who previously underwent orthognathic surgery. Satisfactory aesthetic results were achieved with no complications 12 months after surgery. Considering its advantageous physical properties and the low rate of postoperative complications reported in the literature, PEEK can increase the treatment options for recontouring not only the upper third and the middle third of the face, but also of the lower third, in particular in cases of large three-dimensional defects.

This paper forensically reconstructs the timings, impacts and processes that drove the sequence of explosive eruptions of La Soufrière, St Vincent in April 2021 using a combination of field-based stratigraphy and textural dissection of the deposit character together with contemporary visual observations. Explosive activity on 9th and early on 10th April involved destruction of almost all of the 2020/2021 lava dome, ∼ 60% of the 1979 dome and formation of a 600 m diameter crater by 2pm UTC on 10th April. Following the initial explosion, plumes rose to altitudes of ∼15 km and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) formed by column collapse, first occurred on 10th April, only after > 24hrs of explosive activity. Dense PDCs reached the sea only in the Larikai and Roseau Valleys, and dilute PDCs were restricted to within 2.5 km of the Summit Crater rim. The tephra fallout deposits are stratified, composed of numerous layers of both lapilli-rich and ash-rich layers, which we have grouped into at least 7 Units, based on their common characteristics (Units 1 to 7). Volume estimates, using a range of techniques to constrain uncertainties, indicate that the bulk volume of tephra (fallout and PDC) is 1.19 x 108m3 +/− 20% making this a VEI 4 eruption. A man in his twenties with a history of recurrent sinusitis was urgently referred to the emergency department (ED) by an out-of-hours general practitioner following a 2-day history of increasing right eye pain, redness and swelling after a week of coryzal symptoms. He denied visual impairment and any history of recent dental pain or procedures. Initial assessment in ED noted fever, tachycardia and hypotension. Video consultation with ophthalmologist in the ED identified proptosis, periorbital erythema and chemosis with full eye movement solely affecting the right eye. Visual acuity of 6/6 was confirmed in both eyes. After review by the ear, nose and throat (ENT) team, a diagnosis of sinogenic right orbital cellulitis was made, empirical antibiotics started and care transferred to the ENT team for immediate surgical intervention. 48 hours postoperatively, the patient acutely deteriorated, developing ophthalmoplegia and visual acuity of 6/95 in the right eye. Repeat imaging demonstrated a deteriorating picture and urgent surgery was organised at a neighbouring hospital’s specialist ENT unit combined with a change to his antibiotics. On day 4, 1 day following transfer, an anaerobic bacterium,Eggerthia catenaformis,was isolated from blood cultures collected on admission. The patient improved clinically following the second surgery and targeted antimicrobial therapy, eventually being discharged 10 days after initial presentation. In addition toE. catenaformis, the Anaerobic Reference Unit (Cardiff) identified two further anaerobic bacteria,Parvimonas micraandDialister pneumosintes. This paper presents the first documented case of polymicrobial anaerobic orbital cellulitis secondary to acute bacterial sinusitis. Moreover, this case underpins the importance of broad empirical antibiotics coupled with surgical source control to effectively manage a rare but sight-threatening and life-threatening disease.

International audience; The advent of privacy laws and principles such as data minimization and informed consent are supposed to protect citizens from over-collection of personal data. Nevertheless, current processes, mainly through filling forms are still based on practices that lead to over-collection. Indeed, any citizen wishing to apply for a benefit (or service) will transmit all their personal data involved in the evaluation of the eligibility criteria. The resulting problem of over-collection affects millions of individuals, with considerable volumes of information collected. If this problem of compliance concerns both public and private organizations (e.g., social services, banks, insurance companies), it is because it faces non-trivial issues, which hinder the implementation of data minimization by developers. In this paper, we propose a new modeling approach that enables data minimization and informed choices for the users, for any decision problem modeled using classical logic, which covers a wide range of practical cases. Our data minimization solution uses game theoretic notions to explain and quantify the privacy payoff for the user. We show how our algorithms can be applied to practical cases study as a new PET for minimal, fully accurate (all due services must be preserved) and informed data collection.

Oxygen-enriched combustion technology has an important application prospect, in which Oxy-steam combustion is a new generation of potential carbon capture technology. In this paper, the effects of O₂/CO₂ and O₂/H₂O atmosphere on soot formation in laminar diffusion flame were studied. The flame image was taken by a color (CCD) camera in the visible band, the directional emission power in R and G bands was calibrated, and the two-dimensional distribution of temperature and soot volume fraction in the flame was reconstructed. The experimental results are compared with the numerical results, and the numerical results well predict the temperature of oxygen-enriched flame in O₂/N₂/CO₂ atmosphere, but overestimate the soot volume fraction. The laminar diffusion flame of ethylene in two kinds of oxygen-rich atmosphere was numerically studied by using a step-by-step decoupling method to separate the density, transport, thermal and chemical effects of the diluent by introducing four virtual substances. The calculation results show that combustion in O₂/H₂O and O₂/CO₂ atmosphere reduces the flame peak temperature, but the effect on the flame centerline temperature distribution is different. The addition of H₂O enhanced the concentration of OH through the reverse reaction rate of OH + H₂=H + H₂O, while the addition of CO₂ decreased the concentration of OH.O₂/CO₂ combustion leads to the increase of flame height and radius, while in O₂/H₂O atmosphere, the flame height is shortened. Both CO₂ and H₂O have a good inhibitory effect on soot formation. CO₂ in the oxidant affects soot nucleation and surface growth rate mainly by reducing flame temperature and H mole fraction, but not by promoting soot oxidation process. Water vapor also inhibits soot formation by increasing OH concentration through chemical effect.

How are abstract concepts such as ‘freedom' and ‘democracy' represented in the mind? One prominent proposal suggests that abstract concepts are grounded in emotion. Supporting this ‘affective embodiment' account, abstract concepts are rated to be more strongly positive or more strongly negative than concrete concepts. This paper demonstrates that this finding generalizes across languages by synthesizing rating data from Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Polish and Spanish. However, a deeper look at the same data suggests that the idea of emotional grounding only characterizes a small subset of abstract concepts. Moreover, when the concreteness/abstractness dimension is not operationalized using concreteness ratings, it is actually found that concrete concepts are rated as more emotional than abstract ones. Altogether, these results suggest limitations to the idea that emotion is an important factor in the grounding of abstract concepts. Lipomas are benign tumours of mesenchymal origin, representing one of the most common tumours of the body. They are often observed between the fourth and the sixth decade of life and in 13% of the cases they occur in the head and neck region. In case of symptoms, surgical removal is the treatment of choice; when the formation involves the temporal region, the surgical approach is often challenging due to the presence of the neurovascular structures, such as the temporalis branch of the facial nerve and their potential extension to the nearby structures under the zygomatic arch to either the infratemporal fossa or the buccal region. Recurrence can occur frequently only if there is incomplete removal of lipoma. In this paper, the authors discuss surgical pitfalls of a very rare case of a large-sized symptomatic lipoma extended to the infratemporal and pterygomaxillary fossa, surgically removed via trans-zygomatic hemicoronal approach.

Cooperative networks are essential features of human society. Evolutionary theory hypothesizes that networks are used differently by men and women, yet the bulk of evidence supporting this hypothesis is based on studies conducted in a limited range of contexts and on few domains of cooperation. In this paper, we compare individual-level cooperative networks from two communities in Southwest China that differ systematically in kinship norms and institutions—one matrilineal and one patrilineal—while sharing an ethnic identity. Specifically, we investigate whether network structures differ based on prevailing kinship norms and type of gendered cooperative activity, one woman-centred (preparation of community meals) and one man-centred (farm equipment lending). Our descriptive results show a mixture of ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ features in all four networks. The matrilineal meals network stands out in terms of high degree skew. Exponential random graph models reveal a stronger role for geographical proximity in patriliny and a limited role of affinal relatedness across all networks. Our results point to the need to consider domains of cooperative activity alongside gender and cultural context to fully understand variation in how women and men leverage social relationships toward different ends.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Cooperation among women: evolutionary and cross-cultural perspectives’.

Humans rely on both kin and non-kin social ties for a wide range of support. In patrilocal societies that practice village exogamy, women can face the challenge of building new supportive networks when they move to their husband's village and leave many genetic kin behind. In this paper, we track how women from 10 diverse communities in rural Bangladesh build supportive networks after migrating to their husband's village, comparing their trajectories with women who remained in their childhood village (Bengali: n = 317, Santal: n = 36, Hajong: n = 39, Mandi: n = 36). Women who migrated for marriage started with almost no adult close kin (mean 0.1) compared to women who remained in their childhood village (mean 2.4). However, immigrants compensated for the lack of genetic kin by a combination of close affinal kin and close friends. By their late 20s, immigrants reported substantially more non-kin friends than did non-immigrants (mean 1.4 versus 1.1) and a comparable number of supportive partners in several domains. These findings raise questions about the functions and quality of these different social ties and how different composition of supportive networks may provide different opportunities for women in these settings. We investigate the value of a two-armed Bayesian response adaptive randomization (RAR) design to investigate early preterm birth rates of high versus low dose of docosahexaenoic acid during pregnancy. Unexpectedly, the COVID-19 pandemic forced recruitment to pause at 1100 participants rather than the planned 1355. The difference in power between number of participants at the pause and planned was 87% and 90% respectively. We decided to stop the study. This paper describes how the RAR was used to execute the study. The value of RAR in two-armed studies is quite high and their use in the future is promising.

Jedan od vodećih mikroorganizama koji uzrokuje bakterijsko trovanje hranom su bakterije roda Campylobacter koje prouzroče kampilobakteriozu, zoonozu koja je od 2005. godine najčešće prijavljivana bolest uzrokovana hranom u Europskoj Uniji te kao takva predstavlja javno-zdravstveni problem. Najprisutnijim izvorom ovog patogena smatra se pileće meso s obzirom da su kampilobakteri uobičajeni komenzali u probavnom sustavu peradi. S obzirom da se nalaze u crijevima peradi, osim prilikom procesa klanja i obrade mesa, velika mogućnost kontaminacije javlja se u kasnijim fazama proizvodnje kao što su: čupanje perja, evisceracija, pranje, pohranjivanje i hlađenje te kontaminacija putem ruku radnika, opreme ili same okoline, a pretpostavlja se da upravo koža peradi predstavlja glavni izvor ovog patogena. U ovom je radu određivan broj bakterija Campylobacter spp. u uzorcima kože vratova tovnih pilića, pilećih prsa bez kože, pilećih krilaca i pilećih bataka ‒ zabataka. Za određivanje broja kolonija korištena je standardna metoda za određivanje broja Campylobacter spp. prema ISO normiranoj metodi HRN EN ISO 10272 – 2:2017., One of the leading microorganisms causing bacterial food poisoning are the Campylobacter bacteria that cause campylobacteriosis, a zoonosis that has the most important source of this pathogen, given that campylobacters are common commensals in the digestive system of poultry. They are found in the intestines of poultry, and in addition to the slaughtering and meat processing stages, a high possibility of contamination occurs in the later stages of production, such as plucking feathers, evisceration, washing, storing and cooling, and contamination through the hands of workers, equipment, or the environment itself, and it is believed that the skin of poultry is been the most frequently reported food-borne disease in the European Union since 2005, making it a public health concern. Chicken meat is considered the main source of this pathogen. In this paper, the number of Campylobacter spp. bacteria was determined in samples of the neck skins of broiler chickens, skinless chicken breasts, chicken wings and chicken drumsticks. To determine the number of colonies, the standard method for determining the number of Campylobacter spp. according to the ISO standard method HRN EN ISO 10272 – 2:2017 was used.

The objective of this paper was to create an economical and abecedarian 3D printing method for the production of solid microneedles, as a more efficient transdermal drug delivery method, for day-to-day use in companion animals. The process of 3D printing was conducted using two types of 3D printers, utilizing the FDM and SLA printing techniques. Modulus of Elasticity was calculated for the determination of mechanical properties of the material, where the printed specimen was subjected to axial loading, and deformations were measured using an optical scanner. Post-processing was conducted by washing microneedles in isopropyl alcohol, followed by UV curing. The procedure of testing penetration capabilities was conducted at two sites of cat skin: auris externa and the lateral part of the abdomen. The SLA printing method was more precise, resulting in higher quality microneedles for animal use compared to the FDM printing technique. Modulus of Elasticity was calculated and the value E=0.9 GPa can be used. Testing proved that the printed model was able to penetrate the skin at the tested sites. The use of microneedles is simple and economical, and therefore has wide applications in small animal practice. Veterinarians can access microneedle design repositories and print them for more effective transdermal drug delivery. The multifunctionality and transferability of the design in the present study ensure that it can be further modified to provide personalized therapy., Cilj ovog rada je kreiranje ekonomične i abecedarne metode 3D printanja za proizvodnju čvrstih mikroigli, kao učinkovitije transdermalne metode aplikacije lijeka, za svakodnevnu uporabu u kućnih ljubimaca. Proces 3D printanja se provodi pomoću nekoliko tipova 3D printera, koristeći FDM i SLA tehnike printanja. Modul elasticiteta izračunat je za određivanje mehaničkih svojstava korištenog materijala, pri čemu je printani uzorak podvrgnut aksijalnom opterećenju, a deformacije su mjerene optičkim skenerom. Naknadna obrada je obavljena ispiranjem MNA u izopropil alkoholu, nakon čega je uslijedilo UV sušenje. Procedura ispitivanja sposobnosti penetracije MNs provedena je na dva mjesta na koži mačke: auris externa i lateralni dio abdomena. SLA metoda printanja bila je preciznija, što je rezultiralo mikroiglama veće kvalite za uporabu na životinjama u usporedbi s FDM tehnikom printanja. Modul elasticiteta je izračunat i može se koristiti vrijednost E=0,9 GPa. Testiranje printanih mikroigli je pokazalo da je model bio u stanju da penetrira u kožu na testiranim područjima. Uporaba mikroigli je jednostavna i ekonomična, stoga može biti široko rasprostranjena u praksi malih životinja. Veterinari mogu pristupiti repozitorijumima dizajna mikroigli i sami iste printati, kako bi ih koristili za učinkovitiju transdermalnu aplikaciju lijekova. Multifunkcionalnost i primjenjivost dizajna u ovoj studiji osiguravaju mogućnost daljnje modifikacije da bi se omogućila indivudualna terapija.

This dissertation focuses on developing solution approaches for logistics and transportation problems in disaster management and humanitarian applications motivated by real-world applications. We focus on developing improved preparedness and response methods for two kinds of humanitarian applications and evaluating these methods with real-world data., First, we have developed approaches for storing and distributing fuel to reduce the impact of disasters on islands. While most disaster-related studies focus on the mainland, this research fills this gap by providing distribution models appropriate for islands. After a disaster on an island, there is often an increased demand for fuel because islands often do not have refineries, and it could take several weeks for ships to arrive with more fuel. This study proposes a two-tier optimization approach to, first, determine how to allocate, preposition, and distribute fuel to the different regions (Chapter 1). Tier 1 focuses on the first few days after a disaster when there is no fuel available to the island other than what existed prior to the disaster. The results highlight the importance of establishing new locations with lower risk to preposition fuel. Next, we investigate how to strategically use ships to supplement the fuel after a disaster (Chapter 2). Tier 2 evaluates the strategic use of ships to reduce the arrival time of the shipments from outside sources. These results highlight the importance of using standby ships for fuel distribution., Second, we have studied how to identify the best roads and bridges in a road transportation network to strengthen to enable travel from population centers to healthcare facilities (HFCs) after a flood event (Chapter 3). Floods can deteriorate and block transport systems, leading to loss of access to HFCs. To mitigate these consequences, it is crucial to determine how changes to transportation infrastructure, such as road improvements, can improve access to emergency service facilities. The objective of this research, which addresses a pre-disaster planning problem to improve the residents accessibility to HCFs, is to minimize their travel times subject to budget and capacity restrictions. This work requires the use of geographic information systems (GIS) tools. Accordingly, we have used ArcGIS software to capture spatial data, analyze mapped data, visually display geographical data, and demonstrate solutions. We develop techniques for reducing the problem size on large road networks., In our study of two cities in Iowa, we demonstrate that the roads that are consistently selected for being upgraded are mostly the residential roads that guarantee accessibility within residential areas, even if they are far from HCFs. While a substantial number of papers in the literature define the available budget levels as the total number of upgradeable roads, our results revealed the flaw in those methods by showing that upgrading more miles of roads does not always yield a larger number of roads.

Estimation of the high-dimensional banded covariance matrix is widely used in multivariate statistical analysis. To ensure the validity of estimation, we aim to test the hypothesis that the covariance matrix is banded with a certain bandwidth under the high-dimensional framework. Though several testing methods have been proposed in the literature, the existing tests are only powerful for some alternatives with certain sparsity levels, whereas they may not be powerful for alternatives with other sparsity structures. The goal of this paper is to propose a new test for the bandedness of high-dimensional covariance matrix, which is powerful for alternatives with various sparsity levels. The proposed new test also be used for testing the banded structure of covariance matrices of error vectors in high-dimensional factor models. Based on these statistics, a consistent bandwidth estimator is also introduced for a banded high dimensional covariance matrix. Extensive simulation studies and an application to a prostate cancer dataset from protein mass spectroscopy are conducted for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive tests blue and bandwidth estimator for the banded covariance matrix.

This dissertation contains three distinct papers on fertility behavior and domestic violence. Chapter one examines the effectiveness of the policy on fertility, proportion of male children, and female infant mortality. We utilize data from the fourth round of the National Family Health Survey (2015-2016) and use propensity score matching models to examine whether the policy influences household fertility behavior. First, fertility behavior of women residing in the policy states who married before the mandate are compared to those who married after the mandate implementation. Second, fertility behavior of women residing in the policy states are compared to those living in non-policy states. While the policy is found to lower the number of children in a household, there is no significant change in the proportion of male children in a household or in female infant mortality. However, pre-policy absence of a male child is positively and statistically significantly associated with excess fertility.Chapter two examines inconsistencies between an individual’s expectations regarding an ideal number of children and their current desire for children. The results show that societal influence does affect an individual’s fertility decision-making process and that knowledge of modern contraceptive methods has a significant impact on both spouses’ inconsistency between ideal and current desire for children. Inconsistency is significantly associated with number of children and proportion of male children in family. However, causal pathways between inconsistency and fertility outcomes may not be established using cross-sectional data and when implementing OLS estimation., Chapter three studies the causal effect of acceptance of domestic violence on actual physical and sexual abuse incidence. Both spouses’ attitudes toward the issue are analyzed. Results indicate that both husband and wife’s attitudes toward the issue are positively and significantly associated with domestic violence incidence. However, results from the IV estimation indicates only wife’s attitude have positive causal effect on husband’s abuse behavior in rural area. I also find that there is a high rate of cross generational transmission of attitudes towards domestic violence from results of the first stage regressions of the IV probit model. The results are in general consistent across different income and caste and religion groups.

The Midwest region of the United States is one of the most heavily modified regions on earth. Because of this, obtaining regional conservation goals and creating sustainable use of natural resources is extremely challenging. In order to sustainably manage these natural resources, there needs to be an understanding of the social-ecological systems in which they reside. Various actors within social-ecological systems can impact natural resources through various activities and actions. Examining how these actors work within the different governance structures and the policy mechanisms they utilize is key to creating sustainable systems. However, creating these sustainable systems can be additionally difficult in areas where there is little public land and most of the property resides in private ownership. This dissertation works to advance our knowledge of conservation in highly fragmented regions by investigating governance, private land conservation, and access to natural resources in the US Midwest.The first study aims to examine conservation stakeholders’ views of working within polycentric governance systems to understand the informal interactions of protecting natural resources. This study uses 23 semi-structured interviews with those that work on conservation within the Iowa Great Lakes region, then analyzes their responses within McGinnis and Ostrom (2014)’s SES-Framework. The results indicate that there are a variety of environmental pressures impacting these Lakes. This study also highlights the difficulty of mitigating environmental pressures when the governance system relies heavily on voluntary conservation measures. Participants provide a variety of solutions to these issues that center around changes in policy to help mitigate these pressures. This study adds to our understanding of polycentric governance by providing empirical research of understudied SES-framework variables. The second research study adds to our knowledge of private land conservation by analyzing the use of conservation easements in the US Midwest. Using geospatial analysis, this study examines the relationship between socioeconomic variables and conservation easements at the county level. Afterward, we examine the attributes of the conservation easements themselves to understand the social and environmental characteristics of these areas at the state and county level. Lastly, we identify the land cover within the conservation easement boundaries as well as their surrounding landscape. The results indicates that there are no strong relationships between socio-economic variables and conservation easements at the county level. The characteristics of conservation easements found that, in some cases, the social and environmental attributes can be contradictory. This study highlights the need for further investigation of conservation easements as a mechanism for protecting private land. The third study expands our understanding of how conservationists view and manage access. Participants from the study in Chapter 2 answer questions concerning access to the Iowa Great Lakes as well as in their own projects. We categorize their responses within Ribot and Peluso (2003) mechanisms of access to better interpret the results. The results demonstrate that access is a multifaceted concept and that participants hold differing views of similar situations concerning access. Additionally, most of the participants state that there are barriers to accessing the Iowa Great Lakes. However, the participants are split when discussing management in their own projects, due to many of them working on private land conservation. This research also pinpoints areas to improve the management of access in the Iowa Great Lakes and elsewhere. These three papers contribute to our understanding of governance, policy, and access to natural resources in highly fragmented regions to create more sustainable systems in areas like the US Midwest.

Evidence suggests that emotional distress, including problems like depression and anxiety is commonly reported by individuals meeting criteria for psychosis spectrum disorders. It has been argued that the appraisals individuals hold about the meaning of their psychosis may explain the emotional distress experienced. However, this literature has often failed to acknowledge the role of other variables in accounting for this distress. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the mechanisms underpinning emotional distress in those experiencing psychosis, by focusing specifically on psychosis-related appraisals and goal expectancy. A total of five studies are reported, four of these addressed the above aim by focusing specifically on individuals with a psychosis related disorder who were receiving support from a rehabilitation service. The final study captured how parental carers make sense of their child’s future following an experience of psychosis. Following a review of the literature in Chapter One, Chapter Two aimed to provide an overview of the methodological approaches employed in the current thesis. The study presented in Chapter Three aimed to synthesis the literature investigating the association between appraisals of psychosis experience and emotional distress in those experiencing psychosis, in order to determine the direction and magnitude of this association. A total of 17 studies were included in the review (15 in the meta-analysis). Small to moderate associations were observed between appraisals of psychosis and both depression and anxiety. A narrative synthesis of the literature showed that significant associations were evident in a small number of longitudinal studies (with regards to depression only). Furthermore, i in a number of cross-sectional studies significant associations held even when accounting for symptoms of psychosis, suggesting that the association that beliefs have with distress may not be entirely explained by the shared association with psychosis symptom severity. Chapter Four presents the findings of a study that aimed to validate a goal generation task within individuals experiencing psychosis. Using behaviour sequence analysis, the utility of the task in capturing goal generation processes in those meeting criteria for psychosis was determined. The study highlighted that those experiencing psychosis were able to progress from lower to higher-order goals. Using a cross-sectional design, Chapter Five aimed to investigate the extent to which psychosis related appraisals and goal expectancies (goal likelihood and goal difficulty) could account for emotional distress in those experiencing psychosis. A total of 73 individuals accessing support from a rehabilitation service were recruited. Results revealed that appraisals of psychosis were significantly associated with depression and anxiety. Specifically, appraisals of psychosis as a source of internal shame and defectiveness, external shame and as resulting in loss (e.g., loss of future employments) were all found to predict both depression and anxiety. Many of these associations held when controlling for other variables. Only appraisals of internal shame and defectiveness were found to be significantly associated with emotional distress, however, this association did not hold when controlling for other variables. When adjusting for appraisals of psychosis, goal appraisals were not found to be significantly associated with emotional distress. Chapter Six aimed to expand upon the results presented in chapter five by investigating the longitudinal association between goal expectancies (goal likelihood, difficulty and progress) and emotional distress. A series of mixed model ii regression analyses were carried out to determine the concurrent association between the variable and to establish if the degree of change in goal appraisals would correspond with changes in depression scores. On the whole these models revealed that goal expectancies do not have a consistent association with emotional distress when adjusting for other factors. However, they did highlight that appraisals of psychosis may be implicated in emotional distress within individuals experiencing psychosis. Finally, Chapter Seven presents the findings of a qualitative paper. Nine parental carers were interviewed with the aim of exploring how they make sense of their child’s future following an experience of psychosis, focusing particularly on the goals and aspirations parental carers hold for their adult children. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was carried out. A total of three superordinate themes emerged, impact of psychosis (subthemes: psychosis causing a change of path, goals: lost, maintained and adjusted), a fear of relapse (subthemes: concerns about coping and adjustment), and navigating the future (subthemes: hope, uncertainty and somewhere in between, barriers and facilitators). Overall, the findings from the current thesis suggest that appraisals of psychosis experience are important in accounting for emotional distress, an effect that was observed consistently across the studies reported within this thesis. However, it appears that goal expectancies do not have a consistent effect with emotional distress.

The present paper utilizes creative writings, to present and theorize the multiple faces of contemporary undocumented African immigrants and hostile work environments in Construcción, ¿trabajo o esclavitud? (2011) by Jordao Manuel Quizembe and El Gheryb, en Dormir al raso (1994). Even though, the mistreatment of Africans in the workplace, as portrayed in novels and films, goes from mild to harsh. I argue that this abuse depends on many factors, among which, the legal status of the worker (documented versus undocumented), the level of education (educated versus non-educated), and above all the country of origin (Maghreb versus Sub-Saharan Africa). I contend that the discrimination of sub-Saharan Africans in the work place is mostly due to the legacy of racism associated with blackness. However, this form of racism is subtle, moving from a “traditional” biological racism to a cultural one. The rejection of North Africans and Moroccans, in particular, is mostly related to the fact that they are historically implicated in the question of Spanish identity. The Moroccan identity becomes symbolically synonymous to the concept of the enemy: The “Moors”.

This paper aims to test the number of spikes in a generalized spiked covariance matrix, the spiked eigenvalues of which may be extremely larger or smaller than the non-spiked ones. For a high-dimensional problem, we first propose a general test statistic and derive its central limit theorem by random matrix theory without a Gaussian population constraint. We then apply the result to estimate the noise variance and test the equality of the smallest roots in generalized spiked models. Simulation studies showed that the proposed test method was correctly sized, and the power outcomes showed the robustness of our statistic to deviations from a Gaussian population. Moreover, our estimator of the noise variance resulted in much smaller mean absolute errors and mean squared errors than existing methods. In contrast to previously developed methods, we eliminated the strict conditions of diagonal or block-wise diagonal form of the population covariance matrix and extend the work to a wider range without the assumption of normality. Variations in skeletal abundance through geological history, when combined with organismal body size, can provide a much-improved quantification of animal abundance in marine environments, an important control on energy and nutrient flow through such systems. Increases in abundance have long been hypothesized to explain the increase in taxonomic diversity and mean animal body size in marine communities during the post-Paleozoic (252 Mya - Present) but total biomass has remained more poorly constrained than taxonomic diversity and body size due to the challenge of collecting relevant data. For this study, the abundance of skeletal fossils in marine limestones from the earliest Triassic through the Neogene (252 - 0 Mya) was evaluated in order to more directly quantify the absolute abundance of skeletal animals, algae, and foraminifera in marine carbonate environments. Absolute abundance data were collected from thirteen previously published papers reporting point count data for 1596 rock samples totaling to around 400,000 individual points. These data were recorded along with the geologic age, depositional environment, and standardized at the phylum and class level. An increase in the abundance of calcifying organisms across the post-Paleozoic was found, with the exception of a short-term decline following a major mass extinction event at the end of the Triassic period (201 Mya). These findings support the hypothesis that the abundance of marine biota has increased since the start of the Mesozoic, suggesting that increased trophic resources were at least one factor enabling the increases in taxonomic diversity. These and similar findings also have implications for modern conservation efforts. Conservationists can use these data as a deep-time baseline against which to compare changes in abundances within modern marine environments to identify ecosystems most in need of protection.

Differential mechanisms are remarkable mechanical elements that are widely utilized in various systems; nevertheless, conventional differential mechanisms are heavy and difficult to use in applications with limited design space. In this paper, a curved lightweight compliant type of differential mechanism is presented. This mechanism acquires its differential characteristic by having a high rotational stiffness when the mechanism is symmetrically actuated on two sides, while having a low rotational stiffness when actuated only on one side. The intrinsic elastic strain energy required for deformation of the compliant differential is compensated for by reintroduction of potential energy to make the mechanism neutrally stable. For the storage of potential energy, two preloaded linear springs were used. The rotational stiffness of the one-sided actuation around the neutral position of the compliant differential mechanism is hypothesized to be adjustable by changing the preload of the springs. The stiffness can be positive, zero, and negative, meaning that the mechanism can have neutral stability and bistability. The hypothesis is investigated using a simulated model in Ansys Parametric Design Language using optimized parameters to achieve the desired stiffness for the mechanism. The simulated model is validated using an experimental setup for both the one-sided and symmetrical actuation stages. The experimental results showed a high correlation with the simulations. The mechanism with optimized dimensions and preload showed neutral stability for a range of 16°. Bistability was found for preloads higher than the aforementioned optimized preload. A linear trend was found between the preload of the springs and the rotational stiffness of the mechanism at θ = 0. Furthermore, an output/input kinematic performance of 0.97 was found for the simulated results and 0.95 for the experimental results.

The goal of this study is to review the overall prevalence, burden, and distribution of the dengue disease in Pakistan from 2000 to 2019. Literature was searched using different search engines like Google scholar, PubMed, etc. providing the keywords “Dengue disease/infection, Dengue virus, DENV, DF/DHF/ DSS Pakistan”. All the published research papers/reports on the dengue virus over the period 2000 to 2019 were studied and selected data were summarized using MS Excel for windows such as total cases, age wise, gender, DENV serotype distribution, total DHF, and DSS patients. The literature providing insufficient data was excluded. The total number of cases reported during 2000-19 were 201,269. The maximum number of cases during the mentioned literature survey period was reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) (23.3%) followed by Punjab (3.8%) and Sindh (1.9%). The majority of dengue-infected cases were reported as Dengue fever (74.4%) followed by DHF (24.1%) and DSS (1.5%). Overall the deaths during the mentioned literature survey were 1082, of which the maximum mortalities were reported from KP (N=248) followed by Punjab (N=220). DENV remains a major public health problem in Pakistan and seems to remain endemic for a long time. The total prevalence of dengue infection is increased accordingly with time from 2000 to 2019. Moreover, all the four serotypes exist in Pakistan with increased mortalities.

A composite likelihood is a combination of low-dimensional likelihood objects useful in applications where the data have complex structure. Although composite likelihood construction is a crucial aspect influencing both computing and statistical properties of the resulting estimator, currently there does not seem to exist a universal rule to combine low-dimensional likelihood objects that is statistically justified and fast in execution. This paper develops a methodology to select and combine the most informative low-dimensional likelihoods from a large set of candidates while carrying out parameter estimation. The new procedure minimizes the distance between composite likelihood and full likelihood scores subject to a constraint representing the afforded computing cost. The selected composite likelihood is sparse in the sense that it contains a relatively small number of informative sub-likelihoods while the noisy terms are dropped. The resulting estimator is found to have asymptotic variance close to that of the minimum-variance estimator constructed using all the low-dimensional likelihoods.

For scholars to have a balanced discussion about the creeping authoritarianism in Rome of the Late Republic, and the transitional period from Republic to principate, we need to focus on some basic questions: What kind of regime was the Augustan principate, how can we define it, and, adding to that, how did the Romans get from the one case of affairs to the other case of affairs. This paper will offer some perspectives on the matter. In simple terms, the Roman republic imploded because of civil war. It was indeed a republic of suffering (Faust 2008, This Republic of Suffering). Augustus, a military autocrat, was the victorious dynast. Simultaneously, the Romans were tired of civil war with all its violence, human suffering, and death. They desperately yearned for peace. No matter how we approach this, Augustus’s military coup – with its final nonviolent phase, 30-27 BCE – was the way out of the dire situation. A critique of contemporary academia is in order. Our inability to see past our own political ideals and indeed our inability to understand war and conflict, including its grave human costs, is a constant obstacle for our ability to understand the past.

In this paper, we propose a new spectral-based approach to hypothesis testing for populations of networks. The primary goal is to develop a test to determine whether two given samples of networks come from the same random model or distribution. Our test statistic is based on the trace of the third order for a centered and scaled adjacency matrix, which we prove converges to the standard normal distribution as the number of nodes tends to infinity. The asymptotic power guarantee of the test is also provided. The proper interplay between the number of networks and the number of nodes for each network is explored in characterizing the theoretical properties of the proposed testing statistics. Our tests are applicable to both binary and weighted networks, operate under a very general framework where the networks are allowed to be large and sparse, and can be extended to multiple-sample testing. We provide an extensive simulation study to demonstrate the superior performance of our test over existing methods and apply our test to three real datasets.

In the last five years, there has been increased interest in trauma-informed digital design with practitioners in the technology field discussing and promoting the use of trauma-informed care (TIC) concepts. Practitioners are applying TIC concepts from the social work and medical fields to both the design process and products such as websites and mobile applications. However, there is a lack of a systematic overview of the methods and progress made, with no standard methodology or known best practices in applying TIC principles to technology. To facilitate both practice and education related to trauma-informed design and technology (TIDT), this scoping review offers an overview of the related knowledge that is already available in conference papers, journal articles, as well as in grey literature focused on trauma-informed design or technology such as a workshop, lectures, or case studies.
