Camden (1805-1891) Papers, 1784-1958, undated. Papers of Judge Gideon D. Camden (1805-1891) of Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia, and papers of his grandson Wilson Lee Camden (1870-1958). Gideon D. Camden was a lawyer, Democratic politician, member of the Virginia Convention of 1850-1851, circuit judge, and state senator (1872-1876). His papers include correspondence, legal and business papers, surveys and plats, and printed material. Subjects include Virginia, West Virginia, and national politics; the railroad, oil, timber, and coal industries; and Camden's law practice. Wilson Lee Camden papers include correspondence, legal papers, surveys and plats, printed material, business manuscripts, photographs, map, and ledgers. Subjects include the settlement of his grandfather's estate, and extensive coal, timber, land, railroad, and oil interests in West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. A scrapbook and clippings, advertisements, letters, manuscripts of speeches, and notes on medical practice, compiled by Dr. John Frissell (1810-1882), a physician at the Wheeling Hospital and medical superintendent of military prisoners and soldiers in Wheeling during the Civil War. The scrapbook is a folio volume, Register of the Sick and Wounded, U.S.A. General Hospital. There is also information on the Medical Society of the City of Wheeling, the West Virginia Medical Society, medical conventions in West Virginia, and Wheeling local history

The S. Floyd Mori papers (1962-2005) contain correspondence, scrapbooks, student papers, meeting minutes, reports, memos, brochures, pamphlets, and memorabilia related to Mori's activities with the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Also included are documents related to his tenure as a California State Assemblyman.

The Robert Alan Goldberg papers (1880-2019) house materials gathered by Goldberg while researching information for his books, Back to the Soil: The Jewish Farmers of Clarion, Utah, and Their World, Grassroots Resistance: Social Movements in Twentieth Century America, Enemies Within: The Culture of Conspiracy in Modern America, Hooded Empire: The Ku Klux Klan in Colorado, and Barry Goldwater., The materials for the book, Back to the Soil: The Jewish Farmers of Clarion, Utah and Their World, are housed in boxes 1-4. Clarion was a Jewish agricultural settlement which existed from 1912 to 1915, with the last members leaving in the 1920s. It was led by Benjamin Brown and other Jewish immigrants from the Pale of Russia and Poland. The colony received homestead land from the state of Utah and tried to establish an agricultural Jewish community near Gunnison in Sanpete County. The small community failed shortly after being established because of poor soil, lack of water, physical hardships, and discontent among its members. Box 1 includes the initial research proposal, and the diaries, monographs, and transcripts of interviews used to form the basis of the book. Most of these papers are in Yiddish with English translations, and were written by the leaders of the agriculture experiment. Box 2 holds two drafts of Goldberg's book. Boxes 3-4 contain correspondence with and written recollections from the survivors of Clarion and or their family members. This material is organized alphabetically by family name., The materials for Grassroots Resistance: Social Movements in Twentieth Century America are housed in boxes 5-21. They consist of brochures, newsletters, newspapers, and membership applications from activist groups. Magazine articles and news clippings about the activities of these academic, political, religious, and or radical organizations from the 1960s-1970s era are also included. Some of the groups represented are the National Socialist White People's Party, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Christian Anti-Communists Crusade, Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Vietnam, the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, the National Organization for Women, and the Rainbow Family of Living Light. Box 5 has material on African American history and the civil rights movement from 1968 to 1972. Boxes 6-14 contain information on the various activist groups and are arranged alphabetically by group name. Box 15 houses information on activist causes prevalent in the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Boxes 16-20 hold 110 different newspapers from this same era. The newspapers are from Cuba, China, Vietnam, and the activist syndicated underground press, as well as some established American newspapers. The newspaper publications are listed in alphabetical order by their published trade name with a cross reference to the publishing organization in the folder description. Addenda to the collection includes other research and general materials.

Papers of Henry Samuel Baird, an attorney of Green Bay, Wisconsin, active in Territorial politics and Indian affairs, and his wife and other family members. Correspondence, business records, speeches and writings, clippings, and other materials concern the fur trade, Indians, the Civil War draft, Peshtigo fire relief, real estate transactions, genealogy, and family matters., Among the papers are Baird's memoranda on the trial of Oshkosh, 1830; two muster rolls of companies of Menominee Indians, 1832; some correspondence, 1848-1850, on the reoccupation of Fort Howard and the return of the Winnebago to the upper Wisconsin River; a few items on Stockbridge Indian affairs and on the fur trade and traders; papers accumulated by Baird as draft commissioner during the Civil War; 3 school copybooks; and some reminiscent articles on Wisconsin history., Among the business and professional papers are letters from Henry R. Schoolcraft, Eleazer Williams, Ramsay Crooks (one in 1842 describing the death of Joseph Rolette), from Crooks' sons, Ramsay, Jr. of New York City and William of St. Paul, concerning the disposition of their father's property at Green Bay, and from William Astor, 1861-1863, relating to Astor land at Green Bay. Henry Dodge and Horace Rublee are other correspondents., The large quantity of personal family correspondence includes photostats of letters exchanged by Baird and his future wife during their courtship; about three dozen letters written by his father, Henry Baird, while he was living at Cleveland, Ohio, from 1822 to 1832, and in 1835-1836 when he was employed by the government to teach farming methods to the Indians at Neenah (Winnebago Rapids), Wisconsin, and letters written in 1836 by Henry S. Baird to his wife and to his father describing the sessions of the territorial legislature meeting at Belmont. There are also letters addressed to Mrs. Baird from the wives and sisters of officers who had been stationed at Fort Howard for brief periods. Mrs. Baird's own letters, frequently written in French, depict frontier living conditions in Green Bay and other Wisconsin communities, and family correspondence of later dates reflects the changes in social and political life which occurred as the state became more populated. Other correspondence of Mrs. Baird concerns relief for victims in the forest fires of 1871., Additional papers of members of their families include many written during the first quarter of the nineteenth century concerning Mackinac Island, Michigan. Among them are more than two dozen papers of Madame Madeleine Laframboise, written mainly in French. These include rosters, 1814, 1817, and 1819, of Captain Benjamin K. Pierce's company, which was stationed at Fort Mackinac; one letter written by the Reverend Francois V. Badin in 1833 and others regarding early Catholic missionary work in the Northwest; several from Antoine Dequindre and from other business and social acquaintances in Detroit; and a number from her nephew Alexis Laframboise, in Montreal, and her son Joseph. Other letters, 1834-1853, were written by Joseph to his cousin Mrs. Baird from his fur-trading post at Little Rock on the Minnesota River and from other stations. Genealogical information are the Tenney family and the Grignon family is present.

Anton M. Holter (1831-1921) was a pioneer Helena, Montana, lumberman and founder of the A.M. Holter Hardware Company. Papers (1831-1921) include correspondence, and organizational and financial records relating to mining, agriculture, lumber, real estate, and oil interests of three generations of the family, headed successively by Anton M. Holter, Norman B. Holter, and Norman J. "Jeff" Holter. Many of the enterprises were in partnership with Samuel T. Hauser. Interests include the A.M. Holter Hardware Company; Holter Realty; Holter Research Foundation; Judith Farms; Montana Flour Mills; and the Helena and Frisco, Helena and Victor, and Maginnis mining companies, This collection is arranged into several major subgroups. The first group is for the Holter Family and allied families. The second major group is for the Holter Family Enterprises. The remainder of the collection consists of records of numerous companies grouped together in categories, including Mining subgroups, Lumber and Timber subgroups, Agriculture subgroups, Real Estate and Investment subgroups, Mercantile subgroups, Oil subgroups, Utility and Transportation subgroups, and Miscellaneous subgroups. Within each subgroup the basic arrangement is alphabetical by the name of the company., The Holter Family Subgroup of the collection contains correspondence and other materials relating to individual family members. Within this subgroup is a series of family correspondence, which contains letters written between various Holters. The correspondence between Anton M. Holter and his sons, primarily Norman, Edwin, and Aubrey, and the correspondence between the three brothers, provides invaluable information concerning the many facets of the family's business activities and investments. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to read this family correspondence regardless of the topic of interest., The greatest value of the collection is its completeness and its century-long time span coverage. The materials serve to provide invaluable information on the Holter family; the family companies, particularly the A.M. Holter Hardware Company; the growth and development of Helena and vicinity; and the lumber, ranching, and mining industries in the Northwest. The only weakness in the collection is the lack of any meaningful materials documenting the political activities of the period. The name index accompanying this inventory is not meant to be a complete listing of all materials in the collection, but attempts to provide some guidance in relating companies and individuals. No effort was made to include the three main Holters, Anton, Norman, or Jeff, in the index. (Manuscript Collection 80).

Papers collected by the Barnes family of WV and Ohio regarding the Farmington Mine Disaster (1968 November 20) and its aftermath. This collection primarily contains bound legal documents relating to legal cases resulting from the Buffalo Creek flood of February 26, 1972: Dennis Prince et al. v. the Pittston Company, Justice et al. v. the Pittston Company, West Virginia v. the Pittston Company, and the Governor's Ad Hoc Commission of Inquiry papers. Papers of Jeff Mann, a West Virginia University alumnus, author, and Virginia Tech (VT) English professor. The collection chronicles Mann's prolific writing of predominantly poetry beginning with early poems from his time at WVU in Morgantown in the 1980s. In addition to over 300 poems, the collection includes working manuscripts of unpublished works, serial publications containing his poetry and other published works including novels, short stories, and essays. Publicity materials are represented by newspaper articles, posters and flyers, book catalogs, and writers' blurbs for his books. Other materials include correspondence and contracts with publishers, some personal correspondence, some Virginia Tech Department of English publications and faculty evaluations of Mann.

(Jay) Rockefeller IV papers, 1960-2015. John Davison (Jay) Rockefeller IV (b. 1937) represented West Virginia in the United States Senate for five terms. He was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-ninth Congress and served from January 15, 1985, to January 3, 2015. He was not a candidate for reelection in 2014. Rockefeller previously served in the West Virginia House of Delegates (1966-1968); as Secretary of State of West Virginia (1968-1972); president of West Virginia Wesleyan College (1973-1976); and Governor of West Virginia (1977-1985). From 1964-1966, he was a volunteer in the Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) program in Emmons, West Virginia. The bulk of the Senator John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV papers document his 30-year career in the United States Senate with additional materials related to his earlier political career.

Easton, History Professor, Papers, 1860-1890, 1935-1960. Lecture notes, clippings, notes, and drafts for A History of European Civilization, Volume 1, and other miscellaneous papers of Jason C. Easton, former professor of history at West Virginia University (WVU). The collection also contains Dr. Easton's correspondence with several former students serving in the military during World War II dating from ca. 1942-1946. Other WWII items include ration books for food, gasoline, and liquor; and two unpublished sound recordings on disc of a radio discussion by J.C. Easton and Clark Ennis regarding the question of which nation the United States should support following World War II, Germany or Russia. There is also an album of photographs, some indentified, of members of the Young family of Charleston, West Virginia, dating from ca. 1860-1890. Addenda to the collection, in two document cases, include Lieutenant Clark Easton's World War I ledger containing class notes and instructional material from an Army Intelligence School, for period 30 September 1918 to 9 November 1918; and a listing of WVU students and graduates killed in World War II. Addenda also include items collected by Easton, including three Civil War documents: 1) payment voucher for Captain John D. Young for work on Bateau No. 16 on the Kanawha River (1962), 2)An eulogy/composition regarding "Stonewall Jackson" by Virginia Military Institute cadet, Samuel Francis Atwill (1863) who was mortally wounded at the Battle of New Market on 15 May 1864, and 3) a three-page narrative by unknown soldier regarding Shenandoah Valley campaign (January to July 1864). There is also a history of Charleston and Kanawha County published in 1911. The David Kranes papers (1958-2011) contain the plays, short stories, book manuscripts and teaching files of David Kranes. Also includes books with Kranes' annotations and several posters.

The Sandra C. Taylor papers (1942-1999) contain research files, notes, material related to Vietnam and the Vietnam War, and photocopies of documents produced by the War Relocation Authority Board relative to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. There is also material primarily relating to the conflict in Indochina, and its repercussions in American society. Also included are manuscript drafts written by Taylor and by others whose research she consulted, including drafts of her 1993 book Jewel of the desert.

The Clarence Dryden Papers span from 1898 to 1961 and document his life and work as a member of the Hanover College Committee of Alumni Trustees. Topics include the rebuilding of Classic Hall, the Donner Challengers, lists of donors, lists of donated money, a few Phi Gamma Delta items, his graduation invitation, his grade school report cards, his daughter's graduation invitation, and the Hanover College Bulletin. This collection contains correspondence, documents, photographs, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings.

Hezekiah L. Hosmer (1814-1893) was first chief justice of the Montana Territorial Supreme Court. Papers consist of a typed copy of a reminiscence; a handwritten biographical sketch of Hosmer revised by J.A. Hosmer, and published in "Contributions to the Historical Society of Montana", 1900; a letter from Samuel (Mark Twain) Clemens(1870) discussing the death of road agent J.A. Slade; copies of miscellaneous incoming correspondence (1865); Hosmer's certificate of appointment as chief justice (1864); temperance speeches (1848-1849); a pamphlet of the Washington Scientific Association (1862); and miscellany. The David Hisato and Tamaki Tsubokura Yamate papers (1942-1968) contain correspondence, business and personal documents, photographs and other miscellaneous materials. The correspondence relate to the life of the Yamates inside and outside of the Central Utah Relocation Center, Topaz, Utah. The documents concern the actions taken by the War Relocation Authority in regards to the relocation of David Yamate and his family. Section I, boxes 1-7, contains the correspondence between David and Tamaki. Section II, box 8, contains correspondence between David and family and friends. Section III, box 9, contains dance programs, other dance paraphernalia, miscellaneous documents, and the Yamate Brothers business papers.

Martin Maginnis (1841-1919) was a Democratic Montana Territorial Delegate to Congress from 1872 to 1882; a member of the 1889 Montana Constitutional Convention; and newspaper publisher. Papers (1864-1912) consist primarily of incoming correspondence concerning politics; and outgoing correspondence, court papers, legal documents, and a scrapbook. Incoming correspondence includes typescript copies., The papers consist primarily of incoming correspondence concerning politics, Indian agency administration, the military, and railroad development. In addition there is a small amount of outgoing correspondence, a scrapbook, speeches, and writings. Most of the letters have been transcribed, and the transcriptions are filed with the originals. The Faith Terasawa papers (1942-1955) contain documents resulting from the internment of her family at the Central Utah Relocation Center ("Topaz") from 1942-1945. These include personal records, especially those surrounding the death of her father, Rev. B. H. Terasawa; camp administrative documents; educational documents; and camp publications.

Francis Elliott's papers consist of letters (1866-1871) to his family discussing his experiences in Virginia City and Beartown, Montana Territory, where he was a miner, farmer, and freighter. Also included are three letters (1880-1881) to Elliott's brother, George, from Joseph Skettington concerning Elliott's death, burial, and estate., This collection consists of ten letters (1866-1871) from Frank Elliott in Montana to his family in Illinois. The letters describe the beauty of Montana, the physical hardships of the bitter winters, a planned civilian campaign against the Indians, and economic difficulties. The last letter in 1871 expresses considerable disillusionment with Montana. There are also three letters (1880-1881) to Elliott's brother from Joseph Skeffington of Bear Town, telling of Elliott's death in 1875. (Small Collection 660)

An album of photographs pertaining to Pickering's experiences at a flight school in Independence, California, July 1943; WASP training at Sweetwater, Texas (Feb.-Sept. 1944); and her flying assignment as an engineering test pilot at Marana Army Air Base at Tucson, Arizona, until the WASP were deactivated December 20, 1944. Also includes photographs of her family living in North Hollywood, California. Also includes 2 kneeboards, maps, pilot's log book, news clippings and correspondence.

Letters from March 24, 1943-October 17, 1944, written home to her family during the war. Also includes flight records, military orders and four photographs of Muller. The letters provide a detailed view of life while training at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas, and her permanent assignment in the Fifth Ferring Group at Love Field, Dallas, Texas. Ruth describes her temporary assignment at Officer Training School in Orlando, Florida.

Contains biographical materials, military and Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) documents, publications by Rossiter (1978-2003), instructor evaluations and photographs (1970-80s) Correspondence includes personal, Whirly-Girls (1979-2005), FAA, and various publishing houses. Also includes news clippings and articles about Rossiter, awards, certificates, and aviation epehemera.

James Brisbin, a Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, native, served as an Army officer in the Civil War and the Indian Wars, 1868-1891. He was stationed at Fort Ellis, Fort Assiniboine, Fort Custer, Montana Territory, and many other western forts. Brisbin was also a writer and publicist. The collection contains a small amount of correspondence (1860-1890), and writings (1850-1891) concerning the Army, the Indian Wars, the West, and Montana Territory., This collection consists almost exclusively of drafts and copies of James S. Brisbin's writings. These writings generally focus on his army career, the Plains Indian and the Indian Wars, and other facets of his experiences in the Northwest. Also included are articles and handwritten copies of letters to newspapers on a wide variety of topics. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence, including Civil War era letters, family letters and correspondence on Brisbin's military career in the West. A portion of this collection has been microfilmed (Microfilm 328). (Manuscript Collection 39).

Scrapbooks of Henry O. Dwight contain original drawings, photographs, documents, maps, and a partial narrative of 1st Lieut. Dwight's service in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry 20th Regiment. The drawings and photographs depict camp life and fellow officers from 1861 to 1865 while his narrative ceases during 1863. Some documents include a dispatch from Gen U.S. Grant, a map of Sherman's march to the sea, hand-drawn maps of battles in Kentucky, Tennessee, and South Carolina, a sketch of Windsor Plantation in Mississippi and memorabilia from regimental reunions.
