1 sheet music cover : chromolithograph ; image 29.7 x 21 cm., sheet 33.5 x 26 cm., In an era before electronic music, singing and playing instruments was a common pastime in the nineteenth century and the public eagerly purchased sheet music of popular and classic tunes. To attract buyers, sheet music was frequently issued with lithographic illustrations on the cover; the images varied widely from graphic representations of the lyrics to portraits of composers and musicians, and views of performance halls. Sheet music covers were an important source of revenue for lithographic firms. Color images greatly increased the desirability of sheet music, and lithographic firms quickly adopted new color printing techniques to illustrate musical scores. Indeed, the history of color lithographic printing in Boston can be traced in the production of sheet music covers. The Real Scotch Polka is an early chromolithographic sheet music executed in the so-called illustrated manuscript style which featured flat opaque colors, printed side-by-side and enhanced with gold or metallic powders. The same lithographer, William Sharp, also employed the “new style” of overlapping translucent colors in the sheet music cover, Fleurs D’Ete. The new style is also evident in J. H. Bufford’s Death of Minnehaha, a musical score based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “The Song of Hiawatha.”, Subject: A floral decoration., Plate 353-6. Exhibited in "Chromo-Mania! Black and white portrait with beige tint stone as backdrop. Artist's signature in lower left of stone. Facsimile autograph printed under portrait. Range of dates based on the years the partnership of W. Sharp & Co. was in existence. Additionally, in March of 1847, the town of Brookline, Mass. celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of John Pierce's arrival in Brookline and it is possible that this print was created as a commerative piece.
