Objective: The objective of this study was to verify the relationship between problematic drug use and the occurrence of Burnout Syndrome among nursing professionals in a hospital environment. Methods: This is a study with a quantitative and exploratory approach. 416 professionals participated in the research. The data collection instrument was Sociodemographic and professional information; Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement  Screening Test; Alcohol Use DisordersIdentification Test - Consumption; Maslach Burnout Inventory. The level of significance (p value) was set at 0.05. Results: The consumption of tobacco and alcohol among workers was evidenced, being common to the practice of using alcohol in binge. There was a positive correlation between the use of alcohol and the occurrence of depersonalization and between the use of sedatives and depersonalization. Conclusion: It is essential that there are actions to minimize the occurrence of mental disorders in nursing workers.&nbsp

AIM: To translate the MISSCARE Survey into Swedish and establish its validity and reliability by evaluating its psychometric properties. BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care is defined as any aspect of required nursing care that is omitted or delayed. The consequence of missed nursing care is a threat to patient safety. The MISSCARE Survey is an American instrument measuring missed nursing care activities (part A) and its reasons (part B). METHODS: The translation was accomplished according to World Health Organization guidelines, focusing on a culture adaptation. Acceptability, construct validity, test-retest reliability and internal consistency were analysed. The Revised Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence (SQUIRE 2.0) was used as reporting checklist. RESULTS: The translation and culture adaptation needed several revisions. A total of 126 nurses answered the test and retest which showed acceptability of missing data. The factor analysis revealed a lack of fit to data for the original factorial structure in part B, while further analysis provided results suggesting a modification based on omitting six items. The internal consistency for part B and its subscales showed good results. CONCLUSIONS: The MISSCARE Survey-Swedish version is a reliable and valid instrument, with good psychometric properties. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: More reliable language versions of the instrument enable national and international comparisons that could be valuable for nursing managers and/or directors of nursing who are responsible for quality of care and patient safety in the strategic care planning process.

This thesis reports on an effort to promote, implement and experimentally evaluate the ‘team nursing’ model of nursing care in comparison with an ‘individual patient allocation’ model of care at a large Sydney teaching hospital, as an ameliorating response to a workplace experiencing low job satisfaction and lack of adequate skilled manpower. A systematic review of available research (1980-2004) in relation to models of nursing care, leading up to the project’s development and implementation between 2002-4, is reported as background to the workplace change project described. This review indicated a need for more experimental evaluations of models of care initiatives. In the active arm of the experimental study subsequently conducted, an action research approach was taken to pursue the change to the team nursing model of nursing care. Experimental and focus group-based qualitative evaluation methods were employed to assess the merits of making this change in approach to daily nursing work organization in inpatient acute care settings. Both experimental and qualitative evaluation findings indicated that multiple benefits were accrued by making a shift away from an individual practice-focused model of care towards a collective practice-focused model. A novel 14-item tool for the measurement of job satisfaction in nursing was employed as a key measure of outcome of the model of care change. The results of validation studies in relation to this tool are presented. In an effort to contextualize the results of the project within the wider nursing socio-historical frame, the disposition of nurse executives and senior academics towards teaming and the models of care agenda is explored via thematic and post-structuralist analyses of an interview-based study. The thesis draws from multiple research paradigms in order to bring the results of the project work and its evaluation and the qualitative study among nursing leaders, together. Clinical autonomy

Syftet med studien var att sammanställa beskrivningar av upplevelser från beprövade sätt att organisera omvårdnadsarbetet inom sjuksköterskans område. En litteraturstudie grundad på kvalitativa artiklar genomfördes. Resultaten kopplades till fyra klassiska metoder för organiserat omvårdnadsarbete och mynnade ut i tre teman. Ledarskap, arbetsmiljö och gruppdynamik återfanns som huvudteman som speglade upplevelser av respektive organisationsmodell hos personal, patienter och anhöriga., How do persons experience being part of an organisation? To be a nursing student includes much time spent in clinical practice. Opportunity to get a sense of how the daily work is organised is provided. Experiences of this kind gave inspiration to this study. The aim of the study was to put together descriptions of experiences from classic modes of care in nursing. A literature review founded on qualitative studies was performed. The results were linked to four classic modes of organised care and led to three themes. Leadership, work environment and group dynamics were found as main themes that reflected experiences of each organisational model from staff, patients and relatives.

There is abundant evidence verifying that patients benefit when nurses communicate better; therefore improving team dynamics will positively impact patient care and improve nurse engagement resulting in many positive outcomes for teams. This applied action research study assessed the research question: “What is the experience of team work and team dynamics among members of a multidisciplinary nursing team from a Licensed Practical Nurse perspective?” The experiences of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and key external leaders (KELs) are explored and analyzed drawing from current literature in the field of teams in health, organizational culture in health, and transformative learning in health. Historical and leading communication, organizational culture, and leadership theories guide this study. During focus groups and interviews, the researcher and participants were influenced to generate new knowledge and insight on team dynamics, through appreciative inquiry. Manifest and latent content analysis identified key themes within each of the subtopic themes, generating a number of recommendations for future action. Through the identification of similar and unique perspectives between the literature and participants in this study, the action research goals of empowerment and emancipation of team members was dynamically met for research participants.
