Search

International and national oncofertility networks, including the US-led Oncofertility Consortium, FertiProtekt, and the Danish Network, have played pivotal roles in advancing the discipline of oncofertility over the last decade. Many other countries lack a shared approach to pediatric oncofertility health service delivery. This study aims to describe baseline oncofertility practices at Australian New Zealand Children's Haematology/Oncology Group centers in 2019–2021, describe binational priorities for care, and propose a 5-year action plan for best practice to be implemented by the newly formed Australian New Zealand Consortium in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults (CAYA) Oncofertility (ANZCO).

PURPOSE: As a further step to elucidate the actual diverse spectrum of oncofertility practices for breast cancer around the globe, we present and discuss the comparisons of oncofertility practices for breast cancer in limited versus optimum resource settings based on data collected in the Repro-Can-OPEN Study Part I & II. METHODS: We surveyed 39 oncofertility centers including 14 in limited resource settings from Africa, Asia & Latin America (Repro-Can-OPEN Study Part I), and 25 in optimum resource settings from the United States, Europe, Australia and Japan (Repro-Can-OPEN Study Part II). Survey questions covered the availability of fertility preservation and restoration options offered to young female patients with breast cancer as well as the degree of utilization. RESULTS: In the Repro-Can-OPEN Study Part I & II, responses for breast cancer and calculated oncofertility scores showed the following characteristics: (1) higher oncofertility scores in optimum resource settings than in limited resource settings especially for established options, (2) frequent utilization of egg freezing, embryo freezing, ovarian tissue freezing, GnRH analogs, and fractionation of chemo- and radiotherapy, (3) promising utilization of oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM), (4) rare utilization of neoadjuvant cytoprotective pharmacotherapy, artificial ovary, and stem cells reproductive technology as they are still in preclinical or early clinical research settings, (5) recognition that technical and ethical concerns should be considered when offering advanced and innovative oncofertility options. CONCLUSIONS: We presented a plausible oncofertility best practice model to guide oncofertility teams in optimizing care for breast cancer patients in various resource settings.

Objective: To determine the causal effect of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) on primary school-age childhood developmental and educational outcomes, compared with outcomes following spontaneous conception. Design(s): Causal inference methods (based on the potential outcomes approach) were used to analyses observation data in a way that emulates the results of a target randomised clinical trial. Method(s): The study cohort comprised state-wide linked maternal and childhood administrative data from Victoria, Australia. The study included singleton infants conceived spontaneously or via IVF and born between 2005-2014, who had school-age developmental and educational outcomes assessed. The exposure of interest was conception via IVF, with those born after spontaneous conception as the control group. Two separate measures of childhood outcome were examined: The Australian Early Developmental Consensus (AEDC), a broad developmental assessment conducted for all children in their first year of primary school (age 4-6, n = 172,000); and the National Assessment Program -Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), a school-based psychometric test first undertaken during their fourth year of primary school (grade three) at age 7-9 (n = 342,311). We combined inverse probability weighting with regression adjustment to estimate population average causal effects. Result(s): The final cohort included 412,713 children across the two outcome cohorts. Linked records were available for 4,697 IVF-conceived cases and 168,503 controls for AEDC outcome data, and 8,976 cases and 333,335 controls for NAPLAN data. The mothers of IVF-conceived children were older, more highly educated mothers, who lived in more socio-economic advantaged areas and were less likely to be from non-English speaking backgrounds. BACKGROUND: Suboptimal endometrial receptivity is a key factor behind in vitro fertilisation (IVF) implantation failure. Direct clinical tests of the endometrium of natural killer (NK) cells and endometrial receptivity analysis (ERA) are controversial. AIMS: To examine the current practice of endometrial receptivity tests (NK cells and ERA) and immunological treatments (corticosteroids, anticoagulants, antiplatelets, intravenous immunoglobulin, Intralipid, other) among fertility specialists in Australia and New Zealand. METHODS: A prospective 23-item web-based survey was distributed by email via the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand, between August and October 2020. Data were collected and analysed using Qualtrics. RESULTS: Of 238 fertility specialists, 90 completed the survey (response rate 37.8%). ERA (48/90, 53.3%) was most commonly ordered, followed by uterine NK (uNK) (36/90, 40.0%) and peripheral blood NK (pNK) (12/90, 13.3%). For all tests, the most common indication was recurrent implantation failure (RIF) (41/48, 22/36, 6/12; 85.4%, 61.1%, and 50.0%, respectively for ERA, uNK and pNK). Of those that did not offer these tests, the main reason cited was insufficient evidence (30/42, 47/54, 68/78; 71.4%, 87.0%, and 87.0%). A third of specialists offered empirical immunological treatment for RIF (30/90, 33.3%): anticoagulants (28/30, 93.3%), antiplatelets (27/30, 90.0%), and corticosteroids (25/30; 83.3%). The majority of specialists (56/90, 62.2%) stated they had refused a patient request for endometrial testing or treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Tests for presumed endometrial receptivity pathology are often used in Australia and New Zealand. Immunological treatments for RIF are commonly employed empirically, without strong evidence of their effectiveness or safety. Further studies should focus on education and clinical adherence to evidence-based guidelines.

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine whether blastocyst morphology post-warming correlates with live birth. METHODS: In this cohort study, morphological characteristics post-warming were reviewed in all single vitrified-warmed blastocyst transfer cycles performed between November 2016 and May 2017. Immediately before transfer, the degree of blastocoel re-expansion was graded as A, fully expanded; B, partially expanded ≥ 50%; C, partially expanded < 50%; and D, collapsed. The degree of post-warming cell survival was graded on a scale of 50 to 100% and was then classified into 4 groups: very low 50-70%, low 71-80%, moderate 81-90%, and high 91-100%. RESULTS: Overall, 612 cycles were reviewed, of which 196 included PGT-A tested embryos. The live birth rate (LBR) increased from 11.4% in the collapsed blastocysts group to 38.9% in the post-warming full re-expansion group (p < 0.001) and from 6.5% for blastocysts with a very low cell survival rate to 34.7% for blastocysts with high cell survival rate (p = 0.001). LBR was 6.7% for blastocysts with the worst post-warming morphological characteristics, namely, collapsed with very low cell survival rate. On multivariate analyses, partial blastocyst re-expansion ≥ 50%, full re-expansion, and high cell survival rate remained significantly associated with live birth, after controlling for female age, pre-vitrification morphological grading, and PGT-A. A sub-analysis of cycles using PGT-A tested embryos showed similar results. CONCLUSION: Post-warming re-expansion and high cell survival rate are associated with higher LBR in euploid and untested blastocysts. However, embryos with poor post-warming morphology still demonstrate a considerable probability of live birth, and they should not be discarded.

INTRODUCTION: Embryo implantation failure leads to infertility. As an important approach to regulate implantation, endometrial epithelial cells produce and secrete factors apically into the uterine cavity in the receptive phase to prepare the initial blastocyst adhesion and implantation. Organoids were recently developed from human endometrial epithelium with similar apical-basal polarity compared to endometrial gland making it an ideal model to study endometrial epithelial secretions. METHODS: Endometrial organoids were established using endometrial biopsies from women with primary infertility and normal fertility. Fertile and infertile organoids were treated with hormones to model receptive phase of the endometrial epithelium and intra-organoid fluid (IOF) was collected to compare the apical protein secretion profile and function on trophoblast cell adhesion. RESULTS: Our data show that infertile organoids were dysregulated in their response to estrogen and progesterone treatment. Proteomic analysis of organoid apical secretions identified 150 dysregulated proteins between fertile and infertile groups (>1.5-fold change). Trophoblast progenitor spheroids (blastocyst surrogates) treated with infertile organoid apical secretions significantly compromised their adhesion to organoid epithelial cell monolayers compared to fertile group (P < 0.0001). DISCUSSION: This study revealed that endometrial organoid apical secretions alter trophoblast cell adhesiveness relative to fertility status of women. It paves the way to determine the molecular mechanisms by which endometrial epithelial apical released factors regulate blastocyst initial attachment and implantation.

© 2018 The Author(s). Uncertainty in mass-observable scaling relations is currently the limiting factor for galaxycluster-based cosmology. Weak gravitational lensing can provide direct mass calibration and reduce the mass uncertainty. We present new ground-based weak lensing observations of 19 South Pole Telescope (SPT) selected clusters at redshifts 0.29 = z = 0.61 and combine them with previously reported space-based observations of 13 galaxy clusters at redshifts 0.576 = z = 1.132 to constrain the cluster mass scaling relations with the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE), the cluster gas mass Mgas and YX, the product of Mgas and X-ray temperature. We extend a previously used framework for the analysis of scaling relations and cosmological constraints obtained from SPT-selected clusters to make use of weak lensing information. We introduce a new approach to estimate the effective average redshift distribution of background galaxies and quantify a number of systematic errors affecting the weak lensing modelling. These errors include a calibration of the bias incurred by fitting a Navarro-Frenk-White profile to the reduced shear using N-body simulations. We blind the analysis to avoid confirmation bias. We are able to limit the systematic uncertainties to 5.6% in cluster mass (68% confidence). Our constraints on the mass-X-ray observable scaling relation parameters are consistent with those obtained by earlier studies and our constraints for the mass-SZE scaling relation are consistent with the simulation-based prior used in the most recent SPT-SZ cosmology analysis. We can now replace the external mass calibration priors used in previous SPT-SZ cosmology studies with a direct, internal calibration obtained for the same clusters.

PURPOSE To quantify joint degeneration and the clinical outcome after curettage and cementation in subchondral giant cell tumors of the bone (GCTB) at the knee. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of 14 consecutive patients (seven female, seven male) with a mean age of 34 years (range 19-51) who underwent curettage and subchondral cementation for a biopsy-confirmed GCTB at the distal femur or the proximal tibia between August 2001 and August 2017, with a mean follow-up period of 54.6 months (range 16.1-156 months). The Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS), Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) classification, and Musculo-Skeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score were assessed. RESULTS Radiological degeneration progressed from preoperative to the latest follow-up, with a median WORMS from 2.0 to 4.0 (p = 0.006); meanwhile, the median KL score remained at 0 (p = 0.102). Progressive degeneration (WORMS) tended to be associated with the proximity of the tumor to the articular cartilage (mean 1.57 mm; range 0-12 mm) (p = 0.085). The most common degenerative findings were cartilage lesions (n = 11), synovitis (n = 5), and osteophytes (n = 4). Mean MSTS score increased from 23.1 (preoperatively) to 28.3 at the latest follow-up (p < 0.01). Seven patients (50%) were treated for a local recurrence, with six revision surgeries performed. Removal of the cement spacer and filling of the cavity with a cancellous autograft was performed in seven patients. Conversion to a total knee arthroplasty was performed in one patient for local tumor control. CONCLUSIONS Cementation following the curettage of GCTB around the knee is associated with slight degeneration at medium-term follow-up and leads to a significant reduction in pain. Removal of the cement and reconstruction with an autograft may be beneficial in the long term.

A diagnosis of endometriosis is associated with increased risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes including placenta praevia and preterm birth. Some studies have also suggested associations with gestational hypertension, foetal growth restriction, gestational diabetes, perinatal death, and obstetric haemorrhage. This review aims to assess the impact of pre-pregnancy surgical treatment of endometriosis on future obstetric outcomes. A search of the Medline, Embase and PubMed electronic databases was performed to identify studies reporting pre-pregnancy surgery for endometriosis and subsequent pregnancy outcome compared to controls with unresected endometriosis. Three studies met the inclusion criteria. The studies were heterogenous in design, definition of study groups and outcome measures. All three studies were judged at critical risk of bias. Pre-pregnancy excision of endometriosis was associated with an increased risk of caesarean section in one of two studies, OR 1.72 (95% CI 1.59-1.86) and OR 1.79 (95% CI 0.69-4.64). Placenta praevia rates were also increased in one of two studies OR 2.83 (95% CI 0.56-12.31) and OR 2.04 (95% CI 1.66-2.52). One study found increased risks of preterm birth, small for gestational age, gestational hypertension, and antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage (all p < 0.05) with pre-pregnancy excision of endometriosis. There is insufficient evidence examining the role of pre-pregnancy endometriosis surgery in ameliorating adverse pregnancy outcomes, and thus reliable conclusions cannot be drawn. Prospectively designed studies are needed to assess the relationship between surgical treatments for endometriosis and obstetric outcome and examine potential confounders such as comorbid adenomyosis and infertility.

Female patients with childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer are at increased risk for fertility impairment when treatment adversely affects the function of reproductive organs. Patients and their families desire biological children but substantial variations in clinical practice guidelines reduce consistent and timely implementation of effective interventions for fertility preservation across institutions. As part of the PanCareLIFE Consortium, and in collaboration with the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group, we reviewed the current literature and developed a clinical practice guideline for fertility preservation in female patients who were diagnosed with childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer at age 25 years or younger, including guidance on risk assessment and available methods for fertility preservation. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation methodology was used to grade the available evidence and to form the recommendations. This clinical practice guideline leverages existing evidence and international expertise to develop transparent recommendations that are easy to use to facilitate the care of female patients with childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancer who are at high risk for fertility impairment. A complete review of the existing evidence, including a quality assessment, transparent reporting of the guideline panel's decisions, and achievement of global interdisciplinary consensus, is an important result of this intensive collaboration.

PURPOSE: Uncertainties remain regarding the clinical efficacy of ovarian tissue cryopreservation and grafting. We report a retrospective analysis of reproductive outcomes and lessons learnt following 55 ovarian tissue transplant procedures at our center from 2006 to 2019. METHODS: We analyzed variables related to graft success such as tissue volume, follicular density, total follicular volume, and age on the duration of graft function. RESULTS: Follicular density and total follicular volume correlate positively with duration of graft function. All clinical pregnancies in our cohort occurred in women who were aged 35 or less at the time of ovarian tissue cryopreservation. CONCLUSION: Graft success, as determined by eventual pregnancy and the longevity of graft function, may be impacted by factors including age at cryopreservation, follicular density, and total follicular volume.

We present an HST/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) weak gravitational lensing analysis of 13 massive high-redshift (zmedian = 0.88) galaxy clusters discovered in the South Pole Telescope (SPT) Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Survey. This study is part of a larger campaign that aims to robustly calibrate mass-observable scaling relations over a wide range in redshift to enable improved cosmological constraints from the SPT cluster sample. We introduce new strategies to ensure that systematics in the lensing analysis do not degrade constraints on cluster scaling relations significantly. First, we efficiently remove cluster members from the source sample by selecting very blue galaxies in V - I colour. Our estimate of the source redshift distribution is based on Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) data, where we carefully mimic the source selection criteria of the cluster fields. We apply a statistical correction for systematic photometric redshift errors as derived from Hubble Ultra Deep Field data and verified through spatial cross-correlations. We account for the impact of lensing magnification on the source redshift distribution, finding that this is particularly relevant for shallower surveys. Finally, we account for biases in the mass modelling caused by miscentring and uncertainties in the concentration-mass relation using simulations. In combination with temperature estimates from Chandra we constrain the normalization of the mass-temperature scaling relation ln (E(z)M500c/1014M⊙) = A + 1.5ln (kT/7.2 keV) to A = 1.81 -0.14+0.24(stat.) ± 0.09(sys.), consistent with self-similar redshift evolution when compared to lower redshift samples. Additionally, the lensing data constrain the average concentration of the clusters to c200c = 5.6-1.8+3.7.

Fertility preservation in the cancer setting, known as oncofertility, is a field that requires cross-disciplinary interaction between physicians, basic scientists, clinical researchers, ethicists, lawyers, educators, and religious leaders. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Oncofertility Consortium (OC) was formed to be a scientifically grounded, transparent, and altruistic resource, both intellectual and monetary, for building this new field of practice capable of addressing the unique needs of young patients with cancer. The OC has expanded its attention to include other nonmalignant conditions that can threaten fertility, and the work of the OC now extends around the globe, involving partners who together have created a community of shared effort, resources, and practices. The OC creates materials that are translated, disseminated, and amended by all participants in the field, and local programs of excellence have developed worldwide to accelerate the pace and improve the quality of oncofertility research and practice. Here we review the global oncofertility programs and the capacity building activities that strengthen these research and clinical programs, ultimately improving patient care.

In addition to space radiation-induced cataract formation considerable eye changes, summarized under space flight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), can occur. Objective This article gives an overview of the current state of research and future directions in the field of research concerned with ocular alterations in SANS and presents the relevance for terrestrial ophthalmological research. Material and methods An analysis of existing publications on SANS in PubMed and reports on the risk of SANS published by the NASA of the USA was carried out. Results The reasons for the development of the eye changes in space have not been clarified. Factors such as the increase in intracranial pressure, fluid shifts, hypercapnia and genetic factors are the subject of intensive research efforts. A terrestrial model for the induction of papilledema could be established (bed rest studies with -6 degrees head-down tilt as a space analogue). Countermeasures for the development of eye changes, such as intermittent artificial gravity, are the subject of current research studies. Conclusion Research into SANS as part of bed rest studies will provide further important insights in the future for space research and also for terrestrial research. Clinical research projects can be derived from space research.

Material and methods Search for relevant publications using PubMed. Results Bed rest studies at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) demonstrated that strict bed rest in a -6 degrees head down tilt position reproduces changes just like SANS on Earth. This model including creation of optic disc edema is applied in human studies testing influences of artificial gravity through short arm centrifugation as a preventive method. The unique research facility :envihab provides the opportunity to also simulate the ambient conditions of the International Space Station during bed rest studies. Conclusion Future head down tilt bed rest studies will serve to systematically test preventive measures for SANS. Similar investigations would be difficult to realize under real space conditions. Through close collaboration between space medicine and terrestrial ophthalmology, this research can benefit patients on Earth.

Microgravity in space also appears to cause an increase in intraocular pressure, accompanied by other ophthalmological changes, which are summarized under the term spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). Bed rest studies are being carried out to investigate the effects of weightlessness on the human body. So here there is an intersection between research into SANS and glaucoma. Increased intraocular pressure remains the most important risk factor for glaucoma development and progression that can be influenced by treatment. The influence of position-dependent IOP fluctuations on glaucoma is still not sufficiently understood. Materials and methods A literature search was carried in PubMed on the subject of IOP fluctuations related to posture. Analysis and evaluation of the published study results and a summary of available clinical data. Results The increase in IOP when changing from a seated to a lying body position is greater in glaucoma patients with an increase of up to 8.6 & x202f;mm & x202f;Hg compared to healthy subjects with an increase up to 5 & x202f;mm & x202f;Hg. In small pilot studies the increase in lying IOP in some glaucoma patients and healthy volunteers could be attenuated by elevation of the head by 30%. A lower compartmental pressure in the subarachnoid space has been associated with glaucoma and may represent a risk factor for glaucoma development. Not only the level of IOP but also IOP fluctuations were associated with an increased risk of disease progression. Conclusion The clinical significance of IOP peaks during sleep on glaucoma is still not sufficiently understood. New methods for continuous IOP measurement offer promising opportunities for further research into the importance of IOP fluctuations related to changes of body and head

Results Bed rest studies at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) demonstrated that strict bed rest in a -6 degrees head down tilt position reproduces changes just like SANS on Earth. This model including creation of optic disc edema is applied in human studies testing influences of artificial gravity through short arm centrifugation as a preventive method. The unique research facility :envihab provides the opportunity to also simulate the ambient conditions of the International Space Station during bed rest studies. Conclusion Future head down tilt bed rest studies will serve to systematically test preventive measures for SANS. Similar investigations would be difficult to realize under real space conditions. Through close collaboration between space medicine and terrestrial ophthalmology, this research can benefit patients on Earth.

Participants completed a 10-item survey, including a validated Decision Regret Scale. Scores ≥ 30 indicated high regret. Free-text response items allowed participants to provide reasons for satisfaction or regret. RESULTS: A total of 108 parents and 30 patients participated. Most (81.4%) reported low regret (mean score 13.7). On multivariate analysis, predictors of low regret included having a FP procedure and a fertility discussion pre-treatment. Most participants believed that FP offers hope for future fertility. Some reported dissatisfaction with the process of decision-making. CONCLUSION: Overall levels of regret in the study population were low, with factors associated with quality, timely discussion and belief in the success of FP technology being predictors of low regret. However, dissatisfaction with the decision-making process itself revealed that refinements to the programme are required to meet families' needs.

Uncertainty in mass–observable scaling relations is currently the limiting factor for galaxy-cluster-based cosmology. Weak gravitational lensing can provide direct mass calibration and reduce the mass uncertainty. We present new ground-based weak lensing observations of 19 South Pole Telescope (SPT) selected clusters at redshifts 0.29 ≤ $z$ ≤ 0.61 and combine them with previously reported space-based observations of 13 galaxy clusters at redshifts 0.576 ≤ $z$ ≤ 1.132 to constrain the cluster mass scaling relations with the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect (SZE), the cluster gas mass Mgas and YX, the product of Mgas and X-ray temperature. We extend a previously used framework for the analysis of scaling relations and cosmological constraints obtained from SPT-selected clusters to make use of weak lensing information. We introduce a new approach to estimate the effective average redshift distribution of background galaxies and quantify a number of systematic errors affecting the weak lensing modelling. These errors include a calibration of the bias incurred by fitting a Navarro–Frenk–White profile to the reduced shear using N-body simulations. We blind the analysis to avoid confirmation bias. We are able to limit the systematic uncertainties to 5.6% in cluster mass (68% confidence). Our constraints on the mass–X-ray observable scaling relation parameters are consistent with those obtained by earlier studies and our constraints for the mass–SZE scaling relation are consistent with the simulation-based prior used in the most recent SPT–SZ cosmology analysis. We can now replace the external mass calibration priors used in previous SPT–SZ cosmology studies with a direct, internal calibration obtained for the same clusters.

STUDY QUESTION: Are uterine natural killer (uNK) cell numbers and their distribution relative to endometrial arterioles altered in women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) compared to women with embryo implantation success (IS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: uNK cell numbers and their distribution relative to endometrial arterioles are not significantly different in women with RIF compared to women in whom embryo implantation occurs successfully following IVF. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN: uNK cells are regulators of decidual angiogenesis and spiral arteriole remodelling during early pregnancy. Although some studies have shown that uNK cell numbers may be altered in women with RIF, the methods used to measure uNK cell numbers have proven inconsistent, making reproduction of these results difficult. It is unclear, therefore, whether the results reported so far are reproducible. Moreover, it is not known how uNK cell numbers may impact IVF outcomes. Despite the lack of conclusive evidence, uNK cell numbers are often evaluated as a prognostic criterion in women undergoing assisted reproductive procedures. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Endometrial pipelle biopsies were collected 6-8 days post-LH surge in natural cycles from women with RIF (n = 14), women with IS (n = 11) and women with potential RIF at the time of the study (PRIF; n = 9) from 2013 to 2015. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Women and men who had stored reproductive material before cancer treatment at two private and one public fertility clinics up to June 2014 and were at least 18 years old at the time were identified from medical records and invited to complete an anonymous questionnaire about their reproductive experiences. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Of the 870 potential respondents 302 (171 female and 131 male) returned completed questionnaires yielding a response rate of 34.5% (39.5% and 29.7% for female and male respondents, respectively). Current age was similar for women and men (37.2 years) but men had been diagnosed with cancer significantly earlier in life than women (28.2 versus 30.3 years, P = 0.03). Almost two-thirds of respondents wished to have a child or another child in the future, some of whom knew that they were unable to. We constrain the normalization of the $\zeta-M_{500}$ relation, $A_\mathrm{SZ}=12.0_{-6.7}^{+2.6}$ when using a prior on the mass slope $B_\mathrm{SZ}$ from the latest SPT cluster cosmology analysis. Without this prior, we recover $A_\mathrm{SZ}=10.8_{-5.2}^{+2.3}$ and $B_\mathrm{SZ}=1.30_{-0.44}^{+0.22}$. Results in both cases imply lower cluster masses than measured in previous work with and without WL, although the uncertainties are large. The WL derived value of $B_\mathrm{SZ}$ is $\approx 20\%$ lower than the value preferred by the most recent SPT cluster cosmology analysis. Why is social bias and its depressing effects on low-status or low-performing groups exaggerated? We foresee a surge in research examining these mechanisms and recommend, meanwhile, reviving and better observing scientific ideals.

BACKGROUND: Cancer treatment can diminish fertility in women and men. The need for fertility preservation is growing as increasing numbers of people survive cancer. Cryostorage of reproductive material to preserve potential for conception for cancer survivors has moved from being experimental to being a part of clinical management of women and men who are diagnosed with cancer in their reproductive years. There is little existing evidence about how fertility preservation services can be enhanced to meet the complex needs of patients who are diagnosed with cancer in their reproductive years. The aim of this research was to inform clinical practice development by drawing on the collective experience and knowledge of staff at well-established clinics that offer fertility preservation before cancer treatment. METHODS: A qualitative research model was adopted using semi-structured interviews with professionals involved in the care of people who freeze reproductive material before cancer treatment. In the state of Victoria, Australia, two large assisted reproductive technology (ART) centres have been providing fertility preservation services for more than two decades. An invitation to participate in a semi-structured interview about clinical care in the context of fertility preservation was emailed to past and current staff members. To capture diverse perspectives, informants were sought from all relevant professions: fertility specialists, andrologists, nurses, embryologists/scientists, counsellors, and administrative staff. Transcripts were analysed thematically. RESULTS: Thirteen key informants were interviewed from August 2013 to February 2014. The identified themes relating to enhancing clinical care in a fertility preservation service were communication between oncology and ART specialists; managing urgency; managing patients' expectations; establishing and implementing protocols, systems, and data bases; and maintaining contact with patients. Uncertainty in the mass-observable scaling relations is currently the limiting factor for galaxy cluster based cosmology. Weak gravitational lensing can provide a direct mass calibration and reduce the mass uncertainty. We present new ground-based weak lensing observations of 19 South Pole Telescope (SPT) selected clusters at redshifts $0.29 \leq z \leq 0.61$ and combine them with previously reported space-based observations of 13 galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.576 \leq z \leq 1.132$ to constrain the cluster mass scaling relations with the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE), the cluster gas mass \mgas, and \yx, the product of \mgas\ and X-ray temperature. We extend a previously used framework for the analysis of scaling relations and cosmological constraints obtained from SPT-selected clusters to make use of weak lensing information. We introduce a new approach to estimate the effective average redshift distribution of background galaxies and quantify a number of systematic errors affecting the weak lensing modelling. These errors include a calibration of the bias incurred by fitting a Navarro-Frenk-White profile to the reduced shear using $N$-body simulations. We blind the analysis to avoid confirmation bias. We are able to limit the systematic uncertainties to 5.6% in cluster mass (68% confidence). Our constraints on the mass--X-ray observable scaling relations parameters are consistent with those obtained by earlier studies, and our constraints for the mass--SZE scaling relation are consistent with the simulation-based prior used in the most recent SPT-SZ cosmology analysis. The galaxy phase-space distribution in galaxy clusters provides insights into the formation and evolution of cluster galaxies, and it can also be used to measure cluster mass profiles. We present a dynamical study based on $\sim$3000 passive, non-emission line cluster galaxies drawn from 110 galaxy clusters. The galaxy clusters were selected using the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) in the 2500~deg$^2$ SPT-SZ survey and cover the redshift range $0.2 < z < 1.3$. We model the clusters using the Jeans equation, while adopting NFW mass profiles and a broad range of velocity dispersion anisotropy profiles. The data prefer velocity dispersion anisotropy profiles that are approximately isotropic near the center and increasingly radial toward the cluster virial radius, and this is true for all redshifts and masses we study. The pseudo-phase-space density profile of the passive galaxies is consistent with expectations for dark matter particles and subhalos from cosmological $N$-body simulations. The dynamical mass constraints are in good agreement with external mass estimates of the SPT cluster sample from either weak lensing, velocity dispersions, or X-ray $Y_X$ measurements. However, the dynamical masses are lower (at the 2.2$\sigma$ level) when compared to the mass calibration favored when fitting the SPT cluster data to a $\Lambda$CDM model with external cosmological priors, including CMB anisotropy data from Planck. The discrepancy grows with redshift, where in the highest redshift bin the ratio of dynamical to SPT+Planck masses is $\eta=0.63^{+0.13}_{-0.08}\pm0.06$ (statistical and systematic), corresponding to a $2.6\sigma$ discrepancy., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We estimate total mass ($M_{500}$), intracluster medium (ICM) mass ($M_{\mathrm{ICM}}$) and stellar mass ($M_{\star}$) in a Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) selected sample of 91 galaxy clusters with masses $M_{500}\gtrsim2.5\times10^{14}M_{\odot}$ and redshift $0.2 < z < 1.25$ from the 2500 deg$^2$ South Pole Telescope SPT-SZ survey. The total masses $M_{500}$ are estimated from the SZE observable, the ICM masses $M_{\mathrm{ICM}}$ are obtained from the analysis of $Chandra$ X-ray observations, and the stellar masses $M_{\star}$ are derived by fitting spectral energy distribution templates to Dark Energy Survey (DES) $griz$ optical photometry and $WISE$ or $Spitzer$ near-infrared photometry. We study trends in the stellar mass, the ICM mass, the total baryonic mass and the cold baryonic fraction with cluster mass and redshift. We find significant departures from self-similarity in the mass scaling for all quantities, while the redshift trends are all statistically consistent with zero, indicating that the baryon content of clusters at fixed mass has changed remarkably little over the past $\approx9$ Gyr. We compare our results to the mean baryon fraction (and the stellar mass fraction) in the field, finding that these values lie above (below) those in cluster virial regions in all but the most massive clusters at low redshift. Using a simple model of the matter assembly of clusters from infalling groups with lower masses and from infalling material from the low density environment or field surrounding the parent halos, we show that the measured mass trends without strong redshift trends in the stellar mass scaling relation could be explained by a mass and redshift dependent fractional contribution from field material.
