Scrapbook of Aristotle Smith (1863-1911), doctor, lawyer, teacher, and historian. The scrapbook consists of newspaper clippings (1897-1909) and other ephemera glued onto pages of a book, Report on Population and Resources of Alaska (1893) from the 11th census, published in 1890. The scrapbook also includes handwritten text on the book's pages and regards the history of various West Virginia counties: Calhoun, Clay, Braxton, Roane; the genealogy of the Chenowiths, his wife's family; his own Smith family; other families include Stalnaker, Smith, and Westbrook; some diary-like entries detailing the weather, visitors, and reminiscences; and profiles of individuals, some recounting Civil War stories and accounts of settler skirmishes with Native Peoples. The newspaper clippings, most unidentified with date, author and newspaper. concern Christian teaching, politics including election results, Smith and his politics, obituaries, and world affairs. More than twenty history columns were written by Albert Payson Terhune (ca. 1908-1909). William Jennings Bryan was also a favorite subject of the clippings. Newspaper clippings with articles by R.J. Chenowith are also included. The newspapers identified include: The Calhoun Chronicle, The Grantsville News, and The Roane County Record. Correspondence is scant but there are a few letters, both handwritten and typed, a postcard, a political solicitation, and among the items at the back of the book correspondence regarding Smith's research into the genealogy of the Chenowith family. Of note is Smith's transcription of a letter (May 7, 1885) to his wife Losie J. Smith from her aunt, Rachael Godden, who detailed her 12 children's births and deaths as well as details on other family members. Also handwritten biographical notes about Confederate officer Daniel S. Dewees of Gilmer County. Smith transcribed Dewees' story as dictated to him and it resulted in an autobiography titled Recollections of a Life. The book can be found in A&M 4360. There is also a transcription of a story by Andy Mace regarding the murder of Jonathan Nichols. Typewritten pages of the contents of the scrapbook are inserted at the beginning of the book, and some typed transcripts of handwritten text are also included. Book pages are out of order, some early pages have penciled page numbers for handwritten texts interweaved with individual numbered sheets. Digital files include three photographs of Aristotle Smith (one appears to be on newsprint), one of Aristotle and Eloise (Losie) Jane, and three pages of a biographical sketch which also appears to be on newsprint.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of computer aided flight planning on flight planning errors. Subjects were selected from the introductory flight courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. After the subjects completed a conventional VFR navigation log, they were asked to plan the return trip of the flight using a computer aided flight plan. It was initially expected that the computer aided flight plans would have fewer flight planning errors than those calculated using conventional methods. The results supported the hypothesis that flight planning errors are greatly reduced when computer aided flight planning techniques are used.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of automated and passive control on air traffic controller dynamic memory. The study consisted of two experiments, each involving a realistic ATC scenario for radar approach control with a mix of arriving and departing traffic. In Experiment I, the subjects performed manual control of the traffic while, in Experiment II, the scenario was highly automated and the subjects were tasked with only monitoring the situation. The dynamic memory performance was measured by interrupting the scenario and having the subjects recall the traffic situation at the moment of simulation interruption. The accuracy of recall was compared between the manual and automated scenarios. It was anticipated that subjects exercising manual control would have superior recall ability and a “picture.” This would have significant implications on the design of automated systems for ATC and the role of the human controller within the ATC system.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the opinions, beliefs, and perspectives of former air traffic controllers who were terminated from employment with the Federal Aviation Administration for participating in the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike of 1981. The study examines the perceptions of the former controllers to determine their feelings toward the justification for going on strike over 13 years ago. This is relevant in light of recent events including the lifting of the ban against rehiring PATCO controllers by the Clinton Administration. The data collected for this study were obtained with an opinionnaire mailed via a newsletter to former controllers who were members of the PATCO union. It was expected that a majority of the controllers would feel their actions of 1981 were justified. This feeling, however, would be mitigated by the fact that the controllers were terminated for their actions and sacrificed their careers with the decision to strike.

- Abstract
This study demonstrates that a computer-based instructional design format is appropriate for novice air traffic control (ATC) training. The computer presents the student with in tutorial and drill and practice sequences that necessitate student interactivity. The student is then periodically audit tested to ascertain mastery of the subject matter. The result of these mid-lesson evaluations serve as a self-check so that the student can assess his/her progress in the learning cycle. The systematic design of instruction and interactive approach to learning, enhances student motivation, improves learning and retention, while placing the responsibility of achieving specific learning objectives on the student. This study serves as a precursor to generating a broader field of computer-based ATC instruction.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to show a relationship between the type of cognitive learning style that an individual possesses and their subsequent success at simulated air traffic control practical exercises. Kolb's Learning Style Inventory was utilized to determine dominant learning styles of 30 college students enrolled in a laboratory-based air traffic control course. The instrument was administered during the first day of classes in the fall of 1990. Students were placed in one of four groups for statistical purposes according to learning style. The scores of simulated micro-computer based air traffic control practical exercises given at semester's end were used to determine a mean score for each of the four groups. A t-distribution was used to establish significance between the groups. This study will be used as a preliminary step toward identifying and testing for more precise skills that are predictive of success in air traffic control for the purpose of developing a more effective method of screening air traffic control candidates.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if the utilization of an experimental computer-based selection test battery would aid in the prediction of a candidate's performance when using an air traffic control computer-based simulation program. Each candidate completed the selection test battery, and then received air traffic control instruction using the air traffic control simulation program incorporated in the TRACON/Pro™ simulator system. The selection test battery results were correlated with the subsequent simulator scoring results.

- Abstract
The purpose of analyzing annunciator panels, warning, and indicator lamps is to determine the state ("on" or "off") of each light bulb immediately before the impact. Determination of the state of lamps may help investigators determine the probable cause of the accident. The information gained from the lamp's filaments may be used to infer the aircraft's operational parameters prior to impact and to a qualitative appreciation of the severity of the accident. It is generally agreed that upon impact the filament of an unlit bulb will fracture without deformation and the filament of a lit bulb will display plastic deformation (Ellis, 1984). The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of current disruption as a result of initial impact forces upon light bulb filament behavior. One hundred and twenty commercially available T-1 five volt and T-1 twenty-eight volt aircraft light bulbs were subjected to inertial impact deceleration forces up to and including 90 times the force of gravity to investigate the effects of current disruption during the impact sequence. The age of the light bulbs ranged of from 50 to 1,600 hours. An air-cannon was used to accelerate the lamps along its horizontal barrel with impact occurring at a hydro-brake located 13 feet from the beginning of the barrel. The hydro-brake produced an inertial deceleration which neither broke the glass envelope nor destroyed the filament. Severance of power was accomplished through the use of a microswitch and a solid state relay. It was hypothesized that there would be a noticeable combination of ductile and brittle deformation characteristics in the filaments as the result of these deceleration forces. The filament analysis of the #6839 lamps displayed brittle fractures along with a combination of plastic deformations. The #6839 double helix filament displayed stretching, uncoiling, entanglement, and general deformation of its secondary coil with localized areas of stretching and general deformation of its primary coil. The #718 lamps exhibited plastic deformation characteristics typical of a filament at its brittle or "off" state. The #718 lamps that were aged 1,600 hours displayed plastic deformations typical of a lamp that was illuminated or "on" prior to impact. The filaments exhibited coil stretching and general deformation. The effects of aging had an important influence upon the behavior of the filaments in both lamp types. The on-set rate of notching depending upon the rated life of the lamp, the filament size, and rated current. Lamps with high rated life rates and low current requirements experienced a slower on-set of notching. Transient indications of the #6839 lamp included a combination of stretching, local, resonance, slight, uncoiling, and general deformations accompanied by brittle fractures. The transient indications of the #718 lamps, aged 200 hours and older, included slight, local, stretching, and general deformations. Aging effects have a major influence upon the deformation behavior of the filament. The lamp's rated life, operating voltage, and filament diameter control the degree and onset of the notching effect which affects the deformation behavior. Based on the results and conclusions obtained from this research, the following recommendations are suggested: (a) the development damage boundary curves for the T-1 series of lamps, (b) the investigation of resonance deformation in the T-1 lamp, and (c) additional testing of the T-1 lamp to better understand the relationship between the onset of notching and the lamp's rated life.

- Abstract
In 2022, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus clade 2.3.4.4b became enzootic and caused mass mortality in Sandwich TernThalasseus sandvicensis and other seabird species across north-western Europe. We present data on the characteristics of the spread of the virus between and within breeding colonies and the number of dead adult Sandwich Terns recorded at breeding sites throughout north-western Europe. Within two months of the first reported mortalities, 20,531 adult Sandwich Terns were found dead, which is >17% of the total north-western European breeding population. This is probably an under-representation of total mortality, as many carcasses are likely to have gone unnoticed and unreported. Within affected colonies, almost all chicks died. After the peak of the outbreak, in a colony established by late breeders, 25.7% of tested adults showed immunity to HPAI subtype H5. Removal of carcasses was associated with lower levels of mortality at affected colonies. More research on the sources and modes of transmission, incubation times, effective containment, and immunity is urgently needed to combat this major threat for colonial seabirds.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study identifies gendered disparities among women students participating in work-integrated learning and explores the effects of the disparities on their perceptions on perceived opportunities, competencies, sense of belonging, and professional identity. Design/methodology/approach: A series of semi-structured focus groups were run with 59 participants at six higher education institutions in four countries (Australia, Canada, Sweden, United Kingdom). All focus groups were designed with the same questions and formatting. Findings: Thematic analysis of the transcripts revealed two overarching themes, namely perceptions of self and interactions with others in work placements. Theme categories included awareness of self-presentation, sense of autonomy, perceived Allies, emotional labour, barriers to opportunity, sense of belonging, intersections of identity, and validation value. Originality/value: This study fills an important gap in the international literature about gendered experiences in WIL and highlights inequalities that women experience while on work placements., CC BY 4.0
