Abstract: Science literacy has many personal and societal benefits that allows for better informed decision-making. Although the importance of science literacy is recognized globally, there are many challenges associated with its promotion. Scientists are more frequently engaging with nonscientific audiences through public outreach activities and with increasing support from institutions and professional societies. This is especially true regarding microbiologists and other related professionals since the start of the global 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic heightened the need to convey novel and rapidly evolving scientific information to lay audiences. The means by which professionals engage with these audiences affect the efficacy of the relay of scientific information. One method of engagement is the "ambassador approach," which aims to establish dialogue among different groups of people and scientists. In this perspective article, we discuss this approach, highlighting activities for the promotion of science literacy organized by the American Society for Microbiology Ambassador Program and similar programs of other scientific societies. We discuss the benefits and challenges of implementing an ambassador approach, propose potential improvements that could be made to existing programs promoting science literacy, and ultimately advocate for increased implementation of science ambassador programs.

Abstract: Genetic risk factors play important roles in the etiology of oral, dental, and craniofacial diseases. Identifying the relevant risk loci and understanding their molecular biology could highlight new prevention and management avenues. Our current understanding of oral health genomics suggests that dental caries and periodontitis are polygenic diseases, and very large sample sizes and informative phenotypic measures are required to discover signals and adequately map associations across the human genome. In this article, we introduce the second wave of the Gene-Lifestyle Interactions and Dental Endpoints consortium (GLIDE2) and discuss relevant data analytics challenges, opportunities, and applications. In this phase, the consortium comprises a diverse, multiethnic sample of over 700,000 participants from 21 studies contributing clinical data on dental caries experience and periodontitis. We outline the methodological challenges of combining data from heterogeneous populations, as well as the data reduction problem in resolving detailed clinical examination records into tractable phenotypes, and describe a strategy that addresses this. Specifically, we propose a 3-tiered phenotyping approach aimed at leveraging both the large sample size in the consortium and the detailed clinical information available in some studies, wherein binary, severity-encompassing, and "precision," data-driven clinical traits are employed. As an illustration of the use of data-driven traits across multiple cohorts, we present an application of dental caries experience data harmonization in 8 participating studies (N = 55,143) using previously developed permanent dentition tooth surface-level dental caries pattern traits. We demonstrate that these clinical patterns are transferable across multiple cohorts, have similar relative contributions within each study, and thus are prime targets for genetic interrogation in the expanded and diverse multiethnic sample of GLIDE2. Abstract: Dental caries and periodontitis account for a vast burden of morbidity and healthcare spending, yet their genetic basis remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we identify self-reported dental disease proxies which have similar underlying genetic contributions to clinical disease measures and then combine these in a genome-wide association study meta-analysis, identifying 47 novel and conditionally-independent risk loci for dental caries. We show that the heritability of dental caries is enriched for conserved genomic regions and partially overlapping with a range of complex traits including smoking, education, personality traits and metabolic measures. Using cardio-metabolic traits as an example in Mendelian randomization analysis, we estimate causal relationships and provide evidence suggesting that the processes contributing to dental caries may have undesirable downstream effects on health.

Abstract: Contains fulltext : 155093.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND & AIMS: Intestinal failure (IF) is not included in the list of PubMed Mesh terms, as failure is the term describing a state of non functioning of other organs, and as such is not well recognized. No scientific society has yet devised a formal definition and classification of IF. The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism guideline committee endorsed its "home artificial nutrition and chronic IF" and "acute IF" special interest groups to write recommendations on these issues. METHODS: After a Medline Search, in December 2013, for "intestinal failure" and "review"[Publication Type], the project was developed using the Delphi round methodology. The final consensus was reached on March 2014, after 5 Delphi rounds and two live meetings. RESULTS: The recommendations comprise the definition of IF, a functional and a pathophysiological classification for both acute and chronic IF and a clinical classification of chronic IF. IF was defined as "the reduction of gut function below the minimum necessary for the absorption of macronutrients and/or water and electrolytes, such that intravenous supplementation is required to maintain health and/or growth". CONCLUSIONS: This formal definition and classification of IF, will facilitate communication and cooperation among professionals in clinical practice, organization and management, and research.

Abstract: Contains fulltext : 155093.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND & AIMS: Intestinal failure (IF) is not included in the list of PubMed Mesh terms, as failure is the term describing a state of non functioning of other organs, and as such is not well recognized. No scientific society has yet devised a formal definition and classification of IF. The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism guideline committee endorsed its "home artificial nutrition and chronic IF" and "acute IF" special interest groups to write recommendations on these issues. METHODS: After a Medline Search, in December 2013, for "intestinal failure" and "review"[Publication Type], the project was developed using the Delphi round methodology. The final consensus was reached on March 2014, after 5 Delphi rounds and two live meetings. RESULTS: The recommendations comprise the definition of IF, a functional and a pathophysiological classification for both acute and chronic IF and a clinical classification of chronic IF. IF was defined as "the reduction of gut function below the minimum necessary for the absorption of macronutrients and/or water and electrolytes, such that intravenous supplementation is required to maintain health and/or growth". CONCLUSIONS: This formal definition and classification of IF, will facilitate communication and cooperation among professionals in clinical practice, organization and management, and research.

Abstract: Blood pressure (BP) is a heritable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. To investigate genetic associations with systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP), we genotyped ∼50,000 SNPs in up to 87,736 individuals of European ancestry and combined these in a meta-analysis. We replicated findings in an independent set of 68,368 individuals of European ancestry. Our analyses identified 11 previously undescribed associations in independent loci containing 31 genes including PDE1A, HLA-DQB1, CDK6, PRKAG2, VCL, H19, NUCB2, RELA, HOXC@ complex, FBN1, and NFAT5 at the Bonferroni-corrected array-wide significance threshold (p < 6 × 10-7) and confirmed 27 previously reported associations. Bioinformatic analysis of the 11 loci provided support for a putative role in hypertension of several genes, such as CDK6 and NUCB2. Analysis of potential pharmacological targets in databases of small molecules showed that ten of the genes are predicted to be a target for small molecules. In summary, we identified previously unknown loci associated with BP. Our findings extend our understanding of genes involved in BP regulation, which may provide new targets for therapeutic intervention or drug response stratification.

Safety and tolerance were monitored with standard clinical laboratory parameters, adverse events (AEs, according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) classification v 3.0) and vital signs. Fatty acid pattern in red blood cell phospholipids and plasma lipoproteins, serum Vitamin E, Interleukin (IL)-6, and soluble tumour necrosis (s-TNF)-receptor(R)II were also evaluated. RESULTS: Mean concentrations of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and total bilirubin, whilst remaining within the reference range, were significantly lower with soybean/MCT/olive/fish (SMOF) oil emulsion after the treatment period compared to control. Eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid and n-3/n-6 fatty acid ratio increased in the SMOF group, while they remained unchanged in the control in plasma and RBC. Serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations significantly increased in the study group compared to control (p = 0.0004). IL-6 and sTNF-RII levels did not change during the study period. Abstract: Dental caries is the most common chronic disease in children and a major public health concern due to its increasing incidence, serious health and social co-morbidities, and socio-demographic disparities in disease burden. We performed the first genome-wide association scan for dental caries to identify associated genetic loci and nominate candidate genes affecting tooth decay in 1305 US children ages 3-12 yrs. Affection status was defined as 1 or more primary teeth with evidence of decay based on intra-oral examination. No associations met strict criteria for genome-wide significance (p < 10E-7); however, several loci (ACTN2, MTR, and EDARADD, MPPED2, and LPO) with plausible biological roles in dental caries exhibited suggestive evidence for association. Analyses stratified by home fluoride level yielded additional suggestive loci, including TFIP11 in the low-fluoride group, and EPHA7 and ZMPSTE24 in the sufficient-fluoride group. Abstract: Dental caries is the most common chronic disease in children and a major public health concern due to its increasing incidence, serious health and social co-morbidities, and socio-demographic disparities in disease burden. We performed the first genome-wide association scan for dental caries to identify associated genetic loci and nominate candidate genes affecting tooth decay in 1305 US children ages 3-12 yrs. Affection status was defined as 1 or more primary teeth with evidence of decay based on intra-oral examination. No associations met strict criteria for genome-wide significance (p < 10E-7); however, several loci (ACTN2, MTR, and EDARADD, MPPED2, and LPO) with plausible biological roles in dental caries exhibited suggestive evidence for association. Analyses stratified by home fluoride level yielded additional suggestive loci, including TFIP11 in the low-fluoride group, and EPHA7 and ZMPSTE24 in the sufficient-fluoride group. Abstract: Because of the public and political nature of peace operations, it has become essential for the commander to make effective operational use of the mass media in order to achieve his objectives. To do so, the operational commander and his staff must have a thorough understanding of the media's historical and potential role in military operations, an appreciation for the operational value of media reporting and, most important of all, sufficient focused guidance to permit them to integrate media management into operational plans. Although significant progress has been made in developing a good working relationship between the media and the military, much work remains to be done. Legal precedent and joint doctrine compel the military to provide access to the media, but the existing joint doctrine hierarchy does not adequately address the means by the which the commander manages the media to best operational effect in peace operations. Available doctrine largely treats the media as an entity the military must 'survive'. Joint doctrine for media management must answer the operational commander's concerns regarding operational security, bad press, and mission interference due to the media's presence in theater. Furthermore, it must outline the operational contribution of the media to satisfaction of the six principles of Military Operations Other Than War as they apply to peace operations. Finally, joint guidance for media management must provide sufficient practical guidance to permit the commander and his staff to integrate the media challenge into operational plans. The commander in peace operations cannot afford to rely upon ingenuity and upon selective applications of lessons learned in an effort to minimize his public affairs losses and limit damage to his mission.

Abstract: This project was undertaken by the Applied Technology Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to provide a cursory assessment of the U.S. Army Missile Commands's (MICOM's) Fiber Optic Guided Missile program. MICOM provided funding to ORNL in the amount of $35,000 over the four-month performance period of September through December 1989. The funding was applied to provide staff who could relate its experiences 'lessons learned' to MICOM's program. This report documents the findings and recommendations of that ORNL team. Abstract: The acoustic field of a shallow continuous-wave source operating near 15-Hz was measured at a deep sound-channel hydrophone located near Midway Island. The source was towed repeatedly between 700-km range and 1700-km range along a great circle track whose extension passed through the receiver. Although the possibility of long-range transmission of low-frequency acoustic energy via bottom-bounce and bottom-penetrating paths has been postulated, analysis of the 15-Hz transmission loss curves indicated that the only long-range propagation paths of significance were those which did not interact with the bottom.

Abstract: Results are reported for a long-range deep-ocean experiment in which a 15-Hz CW source was towed transverse to the line of propagation to a single receiver. Reciprocity between transmitter and receiver roles is used to interpret the aperture formed by the moving source as a large receiving aperture. For the shallow source and bottom-suspended SOFAR-axial receiver employed, we observed the largest physical broadside apertures yet reported over which the received signal was coherent. The maximum observed coherent interval corresponds to a broadside aperture of 14 km at 1600 km range. The measured array gain for this aperture was 1.2 dB less than the maximum possible. (Author)

Abstract: A series of impact tests were accomplished to demonstrate the protection provided by an automotive air bag restraint system for the center and right front passengers. Fifteen young healthy male volunteers were impacted at velocities ranging from 14.9 to 30.8 miles per hour. Impact acceleration-time histories approximated automotive barrier crash profiles. The results of dummy tests preceding human testing are summarized and detailed test data are presented from 33 impact tests with volunteer subjects. Test data are compared with similar data collected during earlier impact tests of a prototype air bag restraint system.

Abstract: Tests were conducted with adult male baboon subjects restrained in a three-point restraint harness designed to provide impact protection in the -Gx direction. The objective of this research was to identify the first modes of injury with variations of the webbing properties of this harness and not the maximum G level that can be tolerated. The tests revealed the first modes of injury associated with the lap belt portion of the restraint and the first modes associated with the shoulder strap. Pathology was rated using the Abbreviated Injury Scale. Impact levels were 30, 40 and 50 G at velocities ranging from 47.3 to 67.5 feet per second. Five types of harness materials were used. Suggestions were made for improving the harness configuration and the need to develop new response measures was identified.
