In the Inamoramento of Orlando, spring assumes a complex set of rhetorical and ideological functions. The locus amoenus is depicted as a spring landscape, following a codified tradition, as seen in the Riviera d'Amore (1, iii 37) and in the disturbing gardens of Dragontina (1, vi 48) and Falerina (2, iv 22). This contribution aims to highlight the exploitation of this theme in the Inamoramento, pointing out the different functions and meanings for which it is reused over time. Through the enchanted gardens, Boiardo develops a complex erotic theory, where the verger becomes, at times, a manifestation of a civilizing tension called Love, and at other times, a deceptive trap that reveals the possible consequences of an overwhelming passion. Finally, by assuming the form of the topos of the Golden Age, spring also conveys an ideological operation, as Boiardo announces a civil, ethical, and political renaissance under the new era of Ercole d’Este.

A presente tese de doutoramento céntrase no estudo da Elegia di Madonna Fiammetta, obra escrita por Giovanni Boccaccio entre 1343-1344, da que se examinarán as fontes que utiliza o autor e o protagonismo da narradora homónima. Fiammetta é unha nobre napolitana que conta a súa historia en primeira persoa e lamenta a perda de Pánfilo, o seu amante. O relato inscríbese na ficción elexíaca e recolle un gran número de fontes da tradición clásica e da tradición medieval. O escritor de Certaldo coñeceu estes textos durante a súa formación na corte anxevina de Nápoles, durante una dilatada estancia (de 1327 a 1340), onde entrou en contacto cos círculos intelectuais da capital napolitana que influíran no proceso compositivo da Elegia.

Nell Dunn’s The Muse (2020) is a biographical book in which the British author presents for the first time the life of Josie, the woman who inspired most of Dunn’s writings during the 1960s. In light of the information provided in The Muse, the aim of this article is to explore the presence of biographical content in two of Nell Dunn’s early works: Up the Junction (1963) and Poor Cow (1967). Utilising textual analysis and historical criticism, this comparative study will assess the degree to which realism operates in Dunn’s depiction of working-class women in her fiction of this period. In order to do so, the main topics of both novels will be considered along with other formal aspects such as the use of language of her characters. Later, all these elements will be compared with the content of The Muse, especially with genuine Josie’s letters and notes from the 1960s included in the volume. The similarities between these two books and the real events presented in The Muse will be useful in determining the presence of realism in Dunn’s early works.

The essay starting from the relationship between phenomenology and hermeneutics in two temporally different moments of Ricœur’s work puts forward the thesis that there is a shift from a sacred as mystery, an unavailable reality that challenges us, in terms closer to the phenomenology of religion in the twentieth century, to a sacred as a reference of human religious attitudes to be minimized in its ontological consistency also in order to open up to the plurality of hermeneutics related to different horizons of belief. In a first part, the essay deals with Ricœur’s interpretation in Lectures 3 of the representative moment in Kant’s and Hegel’s philosophies of religion. An orientation emerges that emphasizes the referential structure of Kantian ecclesiology and the circularity of representation and concept in Hegel and gains the prominence of the symbolic moment in its capacity to make the invisible visible. In the second part, especially through the essay Phénoménologie de la religion, also contained in Lectures 3, we show how in the face of the problem of religious pluralism Ricœur pursues an idea of hermeneutics that minimizes the ontological presuppositions of ground narratives and tries to gain a universal understanding of the religious phenomenon by approximation from the hermeneutics of his own religious tradition., Il saggio, partendo dal rapporto tra fenomenologia ed ermeneutica in due momenti temporalmente diversi dell’opera di Ricœur, avanza l’ipotesi di un passaggio dal sacro come mistero, realtà indisponibile che ci interpella, in termini più vicini alla fenomenologia della religione del Novecento, al sacro come riferimento degli atteggiamenti religiosi umani da minimizzare nella sua consistenza ontologica, anche per aprirsi alla pluralità delle ermeneutiche legate ai diversi orizzonti del credere. Focusing of Boccaccio’s narrative strategies, this article aims at demonstrating that the author wanted to develop in the Elegia di madonna Fiammetta a reflection on the nature of the narration and the role of the narrator. It stresses that this piece of work becomes a concrete and effective representation of the power and the potentialities of both the art of the narration and its narrative products, showing meaningful connections with the poetics which Boccaccio will resort to in the Decameron., Focalizzandosi sulle strategie narrative adottate da Boccaccio, questo articolo mira a dimostrare come l’autore abbia voluto sviluppare nell’Elegia di madonna Fiammetta una riflessione sullo statuto della narrazione e sul ruolo del narratore. This paper aims to analyze the institutional response to the dramatic problem of prison suicides, focusing on two acts adopted by the Italian Department of prison administration to contain suicidal behaviours in prison and their tragic effects. Regarding the first document, the analysis will highlight the need for effective preventive strategies based on a multidisciplinary, global and continuous intervention on the person and also focused on listening and medical support of the inmates at risk of suicide. In the same perspective, the second document takes into consideration for the first time the mental health itself of the members of the prison police, which also needs to beprotected in order to improve the general well-being of the entire prison institution

Based on hitherto overlooked archival material, this book reveals Nell Walden’s significant impact on the Sturm organisation through a feminist reading of support-ive labour that highlights the centrality of collaborative work within the modern art world.This book introduces Walden as an ardent collector of modern and indigenous art and critically contextualises her own art production in relation to expressionist concepts of art and to gendered ideas on abstraction and decoration. Visual analyses highlight how she collaborated with professional and experimental women photogra-phers during the Weimar era and how the circulation of these photographs served as a means to intervene in the public sphere of culture in interwar Germany. The aim is to demonstrate the great contribution of paratext and extra text in the success of the whole literary operation, thus leading to a ‘resizing’ of the specific literary qualities. Furthermore, the presence of a precise rhetorical formulary creates a sort of format of engaged literary writings with proper cadences (the Dubt, the Research, The Hypothesis, The Conspiracy) and key figures (the Victim, the Witness, the Leading-object, etc.). The reference to real facts, characters or truly existing dynamics aims at exorcise the rhetorical display: this way, the author claims the immediate relationship between the writing and crime reporting stuff. Moving from these requirements, we aim at demonstrating that the strain of fictional engaged writings swings between freedom of invention and desire to ‘assert’ the truth.

Nellie (Nell) McCredie (1901-1968) worked as both an architect and a ceramist. She was enrolled in the second cohort of the Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Sydney between 1919 and 1923. However, after graduating, McCredie was unable to find employment in architecture; instead, she found work in various drafting roles in Sydney. In her search for full-time employment in architecture, she moved to Cairns in July 1925 and spent four months working for a small architectural firm, Lawrence and Lordan.[1] In November 1925, McCredie moved to Brisbane and joined the Queensland Government’s State Advances Corporation in the Workers Dwelling Board (WDB). She stayed there for three years designing affordable homes, funded by government-backed loans, for working and middle class families. During this time, she designed at least one house as a private commission, outside of her employment with the WDB. While in Brisbane, McCredie started taking classes in ceramics with LJ Harvey at the Central Technical College.[2] McCredie returned to Sydney in 1929 at the beginning of the Great Depression. Upon returning home, she undertook further training in ceramics, learning to throw pottery on a wheel.[3] What started as a hobby transformed into McCredie’s full-time career throughout the 1930s.[4] By 1932 she had started her own ceramics teaching and production business based out of a studio on George Street in Sydney’s CBD. McCredie also continued to practice architecture independently in Sydney during the 1930s and 1940s. One of her most significant architectural works in Sydney was her design for a purpose-built ceramics studio in Epping in 1936. She operated her ceramics business from Epping with her brother Robert until she died in 1968.[5]Existing histories on McCredie’s career have focused on her ceramics rather than her architecture. Purpose: Spaceflight induces osteoporosis by mechanical unloading. Interestingly, recent studies report that microgravity also directly affects osteoblasts (OB) and osteoclasts (OC) in vitro, by upregulating OC activity and disrupting the OB cytoskeleton. Non-weight-bearing bones, such as those in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), provide important insight into cellular-level effects of microgravity in vivo without confounding changes in load. NELL-1 is a novel osteogenic growth factor, which upon PEGylation (NELL-PEG) demonstrates enhanced pharmacokinetics and promising potential as a systemic therapy for osteoporosis in mice. To test NELL-PEG systemic therapy in spaceflight-induced osteoporosis, we have collaborated with CASIS and NASA through the Rodent Research 5 (RR-5) mission. This study is a branch of the RR-5 mission and, for the first time, focuses on the TMJ to investigate how space microgravity and NELL-1-based treatment affect non-load-bearing bones in vivo. Methods: To meet the mission’s technical demands, we conjugated NELL-PEG with bioinert bisphosphonate as a bone-targeting molecule (BP-NELL-PEG, or ‘BP-NP’) to enhance NELL-PEG’s pharmacokinetics and safety. Eight-month-old female BALB/c mice (n=10/group) were randomly assigned to 4 groups: (1) Flight + PBS, (2) Flight + BP-NP, (3) Ground + PBS, and (4) Ground + BP-NP. Flight and Ground groups were housed in the International Space Station and the Kennedy Space Center, FL, respectively, for 9 weeks. Mice received 10mg/kg BP-NP or PBS via intraperitoneal injection every 2 weeks. At 9 weeks, TMJ were analyzed with micro-CT and histology. Results: Micro-CT of subchondral bone in the mandibular condyle showed significantly increased BV/TV in Flight + PBS compared to Ground + PBS. BP-NP treatment showed an even greater increase in BV/TV, in both Ground and Flight groups. There were no significant changes in bone mineral density with either flight or BP-NP treatment. This paper discusses the recent discovery of the archive of the Australian interwar architect Nell McCredie. Finding this archive was crucial to the identification of McCredie as the author of several Georgian Revival houses in suburban Brisbane from the 1920s and 1930s. From an intersectional perspective, this text examines McCredie’s career as a practice outside the canon and presents her design for Uanda House (1928), and her work as a public service architect prior to expanding her career into ceramics. Like it has many other women, gender bias limited her career in terms of both longevity and agency. The aim of this text is to propose an understanding of McCredie’s archive as ‘minor’. The ‘minor’ category for architectural history is a valuable way to reposition canonical ‘major’ histories, especially in relation to the 20th-century history of modern architecture. In doing so, the ‘major’ and the ‘minor’ are understood as connected rather than opposed ideas, following Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s understanding of these concepts. Thus, rather than viewing the work of women and minorities as ‘absent’ from canonical histories of architecture, this text addresses the historiographical potential of their reconsideration as ‘minor’, which shifts the discussion from a dichotomous relationship to one of interdependence. McCredie’s archive is as an opportunity to develop new frameworks through which to analyse the archives of early women architects.

Osteoporosis affects more than 200 million people worldwide. Therapeutic approaches to osteoporotic bone loss have focused primarily on anti-resorptive agents but with significant clinical limitations. Therefore, there is pressing need to develop new agents, particularly anabolic therapies that promote bone formation. Microgravity-induced bone loss is an important medical consideration of long-duration space flight and has been measured to degrade bone at a rate up to four times faster than disuse atrophy on Earth. As such, the microgravity model of osteoporosis serves as a proxy for extreme cases of disuse osteoporosis on the ground.NELL-1 is a potent pro-osteogenic protein most studied for its local bone forming effects. Studies have demonstrated that recombinant NELL-1 acts as a combined anabolic and anti-osteoclastic agent to protect against osteoporotic bone loss. In addition, through PEGylation, we successfully increased the circulation half-life of NELL-1 (NELL- PEG) to be up to six times longer. In this study, the therapeutic effects of NELL-PEG were further amplified by conjugation with inactivated bisphosphonate (BP) to increase bone binding affinity. We verified inactivated BP acts only as a targeting molecule to optimize NELL-PEG deposition in bone and does not exert its own anti-osteoclastic effect. This has led to my central hypothesis that systemic BP-NELL-PEG therapy will prevent bone loss and promote new bone formation in long-duration spaceflight. Osteoporosis affects more than 200 million people worldwide. Therapeutic approaches to osteoporotic bone loss have focused primarily on anti-resorptive agents but with significant clinical limitations. Therefore, there is pressing need to develop new agents, particularly anabolic therapies that promote bone formation. Microgravity-induced bone loss is an important medical consideration of long-duration space flight and has been measured to degrade bone at a rate up to four times faster than disuse atrophy on Earth. As such, the microgravity model of osteoporosis serves as a proxy for extreme cases of disuse osteoporosis on the ground.NELL-1 is a potent pro-osteogenic protein most studied for its local bone forming effects. Studies have demonstrated that recombinant NELL-1 acts as a combined anabolic and anti-osteoclastic agent to protect against osteoporotic bone loss. In addition, through PEGylation, we successfully increased the circulation half-life of NELL-1 (NELL- PEG) to be up to six times longer. In this study, the therapeutic effects of NELL-PEG were further amplified by conjugation with inactivated bisphosphonate (BP) to increase bone binding affinity. We verified inactivated BP acts only as a targeting molecule to optimize NELL-PEG deposition in bone and does not exert its own anti-osteoclastic effect. This has led to my central hypothesis that systemic BP-NELL-PEG therapy will prevent bone loss and promote new bone formation in long-duration spaceflight. Negli ultimi venti anni, le amministrazioni locali e i governi nazionali e sovranazionali hanno favorito l’uso di strumenti di governance al fine di stimolare la partecipazione dei cittadini nella gestione delle risorse naturali, attraverso la valorizzazione e l’inclusione della società civile nei processi decisionali. Tuttavia è ben documentato che questi progetti abbiano anche esiti negativi per le comunità e che siano spesso concepiti, realizzati e valutati da squadre di esperti e da agenzie esterne ai contesti locali. Alcuni studiosi sostengono che queste forme di governance partecipata rappresentino in realtà meccanismi utili a gestire l’in-sostenibilità socio-ambientale odierna, e che l’obiettivo principale di tali ‘dispositivi’ sia il tentativo di amministrare gli effetti indesiderati delle alterazioni ecologiche il più a lungo possibile, evitando di modificare i rapporti socio-ecologici che hanno prodotto gli attuali scenari di in-sostenibilità (Bluehdorn, 2011; 2014). L’obiettivo di questo contributo è di analizzare le dinamiche di conflitto/consenso che sono occorse negli ultimi 15 anni nella gestione del ‘Contratto di fiume Seveso’ e delle relative problematiche ambientali, anche in un’ampia ottica di pianificazione territoriale e gestione delle risorse naturali, in un’epoca di crisi ecologica mondiale. La ricerca si orienta seguendo la linea teorica dell’ecologia politica e della post-ecologia e si colloca all’interno dell’ampio dibattito relativo al rapporto fra ecologia e democrazia.

The essay aims to investigate the theme of anger in Boiardo’s Inamoramento di Orlando. Starting from the occurrences of the terms ‘anger’, ‘anger’, ‘fury’, and their meanings, the analysis focuses on the physiognomy of anger, within the poem of Boiard, highlighting the particular physicality that accompanies the manifestation of this emotion. The investigation of the multiple patterns and references that may have influenced the author (including the contemporary Ferrara art), concludes that Boiardo is interested in a theatrical and scenic rendering of anger, rather than its tragic or cathartic dimension.
