Venus, lacking an intrinsic global dipole magnetic field, serves as a textbook example of an induced magnetosphere, formed by interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) enveloping the planet. Yet, various aspects of its magnetospheric dynamics and planetary ion outflows are complex and not well understood. Multi-spacecraft observations of solar energetic particle (SEP) events not only enable a deeper understanding and development of particle acceleration and transport theories, but also provide important constraints for model validation efforts. However, because of computational limitations, a given physics-based SEP model is usually best-suited to capture a particular phase of an SEP event, rather than its whole development from onset through decay. For example, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models of the heliosphere often incorporate solar transients only at the outer boundary of their so-called coronal domain -- usually set at a heliocentric distance of 20-30 $R_{\odot}$. This means that particle acceleration at CME-driven shocks is also computed from this boundary onwards, leading to simulated SEP event onsets that can be many hours later than observed, since shock waves can form much lower in the solar corona. In this work, we aim to improve the modelled onset of SEP events by inserting a "fixed source" of particle injection at the outer boundary of the coronal domain of the coupled WSA-Enlil 3D MHD model of the heliosphere. The SEP model that we employ for this effort is SEPMOD, a physics-based test-particle code based on a field line tracer and adiabatic invariant conservation. We apply our initial tests and results of SEPMOD's fixed-source option to the 2021 October 9 SEP event, which was detected at five well-separated locations in the inner heliosphere -- Parker Solar Probe, STEREO-A, Solar Orbiter, BepiColombo, and near-Earth spacecraft., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Journal of Space Weather and Space Climate

Despite Venus having insignificant intrinsic magnetic fields, the magnetic connectivity between the solar wind and the Venus ionosphere, or magnetic topology, is not as simple as expected and is also important for characterizing the Venus space environment. This study provides a technique combining superthermal electron energy and pitch angle distributions to infer up to 6 subtypes of magnetic topology at Venus. This enables us to determine magnetic topology with automated procedures using the Venus Express (VEx) observations from May 2006 to November 2014. We find that the draped topology (both ends of a field line not connected to the collisional ionosphere) is the dominant topology in the near-Venus space environment, >70%, except at low altitudes close to the ionosphere. The open (a field line connected to both the solar wind and the collisional ionosphere) and closed (a field line connected only to the collisional ionosphere) topologies make up 20%-30% on average of the magnetotail and up to 50% at low altitudes. This study provides the first characterization of the statistical distributions of different magnetic topologies at Venus.

Solar Energetic Particles (SEP) events are interesting from a scientific perspective as they are the product of a broad set of physical processes from the corona out through the extent of the heliosphere, and provide insight into processes of particle acceleration and transport that are widely applicable in astrophysics. From the operations perspective, SEP events pose a radiation hazard for aviation, electronics in space, and human space exploration, in particular for missions outside of the Earth’s protective magnetosphere including to the Moon and Mars. Thus, it is critical to imific understanding of SEP events and use this understanding to develop and improve SEP forecasting capabilities to support operations. Many SEP models exist or are in development using a wide variety of approaches and with differing goals. These include computationally intensive physics-based models, fast and light empirical models, machine learning-based models, and mixed-model approaches. The aim of this paper is to summarize all of the SEP models currently developed in the scientific community, including a description of model approach, inputs and outputs, free parameters, and any published validations or comparisons with data.

In recent years, interest in space weather predictions has expanded to include impacts at other planets beyond Earth as well as spacecraft scattered throughout the heliosphere. In this sense, the scope of space weather science now encompasses the whole heliospheric system, and multi-point measurements of solar transients can provide useful insights and validations for prediction models. In this work, we aim to analyse the whole inner heliospheric context between two eruptive flares that took place in late 2020, i.e. the M4.4 flare of November 29 and the C7.4 flare of December 7. This period is especially interesting because the STEREO-A spacecraft was located ∼60° east of the Sun–Earth line, giving us the opportunity to test the capabilities of “predictions at 360°” using remote-sensing observations from the Lagrange L1 and L5 points as input. We simulate the CMEs that were ejected during our period of interest and the SEPs accelerated by their shocks using the WSA–Enlil–SEPMOD modelling chain and four sets of input parameters, forming a “mini-ensemble”. We validate our results using in-situ observations at six locations, including Earth and Mars. We find that, despite some limitations arising from the models’ architecture and assumptions, CMEs and shock-accelerated SEPs can be reasonably studied and forecast in real time at least out to several tens of degrees away from the eruption site using the prediction tools employed here.

The activity of the Sun alternates between a solar minimum and a solar maximum, the former corresponding to a period of "quieter" status of the heliosphere. During solar minimum, it is in principle more straightforward to follow eruptive events and solar wind structures from their birth at the Sun throughout their interplanetary journey. In this paper, we report analysis of the origin, evolution, and heliospheric impact of a series of solar transient events that took place during the second half of August 2018, i.e. in the midst of the late declining phase of Solar Cycle 24. In particular, we focus on two successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and a following high-speed stream (HSS) on their way towards Earth and Mars. We find that the first CME impacted both planets, whilst the second caused a strong magnetic storm at Earth and went on to miss Mars, which nevertheless experienced space weather effects from the stream interacting region (SIR) preceding the HSS. Analysis of remote-sensing and in-situ data supported by heliospheric modelling suggests that CME--HSS interaction resulted in the second CME rotating and deflecting in interplanetary space, highlighting that accurately reproducing the ambient solar wind is crucial even during "simpler" solar minimum periods. As a follow-up study on Sun-to-Earth propagation of fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs), we examine the Sun-to-Earth characteristics of slow CMEs combining heliospheric imaging and in situ observations. Three events of particular interest, the 2010 June 16, 2011 March 25, and 2012 September 25 CMEs, are selected for this study. We compare slow CMEs with fast and intermediate-speed events, and obtain key results complementing the attempt of Liu et al. to create a general picture of CME Sun-to-Earth propagation: (1) the Sun-to-Earth propagation of a typical slow CME can be approximately described by two phases, a gradual acceleration out to about 20–30 solar radii, followed by a nearly invariant speed around the average solar wind level; (2) comparison between different types of CMEs indicates that faster CMEs tend to accelerate and decelerate more rapidly and have shorter cessation distances for the acceleration and deceleration; (3) both intermediate-speed and slow CMEs would have speeds comparable to the average solar wind level before reaching 1 au; (4) slow CMEs have a high potential to interact with other solar wind structures in the Sun–Earth space due to their slow motion, providing critical ingredients to enhance space weather; and (5) the slow CMEs studied here lack strong magnetic fields at the Earth but tend to preserve a flux-rope structure with an axis generally perpendicular to the radial direction from the Sun. We also suggest a "best" strategy for the application of a triangulation concept in determining CME Sun-to-Earth kinematics, which helps to clarify confusions about CME geometry assumptions in the triangulation and to improve CME analysis and observations.

We examine the structure, propagation and expansion of the shock associated with the 2012 July 23 extreme coronal mass ejection (CME). Characteristics of the shock determined from multi-point imaging observations are compared to in situ measurements at different locations and a complex radio type II burst, which according to our definition has multiple branches that may not all be fundamental-harmonic related. The white-light shock signature can be modeled reasonably well by a spherical structure and was expanding backward even on the opposite side of the Sun. The expansion of the shock, which was roughly self-similar after the first $\sim$1.5 hours from launch, largely dominated over the translation of the shock center for the time period of interest. Our study also suggests a bow-shock morphology around the nose at later times due to the outward motion in combination with the expansion of the ejecta. The shock decayed and failed to reach Mercury in the backward direction and STEREO B and Venus in the lateral directions, as indicated by the imaging and in situ observations. The shock in the nose direction, however, may persist to the far outer heliosphere, with predicted impact on Dawn around 06 UT on July 25 and on Jupiter around 23:30 UT on July 27 by an MHD model. The type II burst shows properties generally consistent with the spatial/temporal variations of the shock deduced from imaging and in situ observations. We study the solar energetic particle (SEP) event associated with the 2012 July 23 extreme solar storm, for which STEREO and the spacecraft at L1 provide multi-point remote sensing and in situ observations. The extreme solar storm, with a superfast shock and extremely enhanced ejecta magnetic fields observed near 1 AU at STEREO A, was caused by the combination of successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Meanwhile, energetic particles were observed by STEREO and near-Earth spacecraft such as ACE and SOHO, suggestive of a wide longitudinal spread of the particles at 1 AU. Combining the SEP observations with in situ plasma and magnetic field measurements we investigate the longitudinal distribution of the SEP event in connection with the associated shock and CMEs. Our results underscore the complex magnetic configuration of the inner heliosphere formed by solar eruptions. The examinations of particle intensities, proton anisotropy distributions, element abundance ratios, magnetic connectivity and spectra also give important clues for the particle acceleration, transport and distribution., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the solar energetic particle (SEP) event associated with the 2012 July 23 extreme solar storm, for which STEREO and the spacecraft at L1 provide multi-point remote sensing and in situ observations. The extreme solar storm, with a superfast shock and extremely enhanced ejecta magnetic fields observed near 1 AU at STEREO A, was caused by the combination of successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Meanwhile, energetic particles were observed by STEREO and near-Earth spacecraft such as ACE and SOHO, suggestive of a wide longitudinal spread of the particles at 1 AU. Combining the SEP observations with in situ plasma and magnetic field measurements we investigate the longitudinal distribution of the SEP event in connection with the associated shock and CMEs. Our results underscore the complex magnetic configuration of the inner heliosphere formed by solar eruptions. The examinations of particle intensities, proton anisotropy distributions, element abundance ratios, magnetic connectivity and spectra also give important clues for the particle acceleration, transport and distribution., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

As a follow-up study on Sun-to-Earth propagation of fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs), we examine the Sun-to-Earth characteristics of slow CMEs combining heliospheric imaging and in situ observations. Three events of particular interest, the 2010 June 16, 2011 March 25 and 2012 September 25 CMEs, are selected for this study. We compare slow CMEs with fast and intermediate-speed events, and obtain key results complementing the attempt of \citet{liu13} to create a general picture of CME Sun-to-Earth propagation: (1) the Sun-to-Earth propagation of a typical slow CME can be approximately described by two phases, a gradual acceleration out to about 20-30 solar radii, followed by a nearly invariant speed around the average solar wind level, (2) comparison between different types of CMEs indicates that faster CMEs tend to accelerate and decelerate more rapidly and have shorter cessation distances for the acceleration and deceleration, (3) both intermediate-speed and slow CMEs would have a speed comparable to the average solar wind level before reaching 1 AU, (4) slow CMEs have a high potential to interact with other solar wind structures in the Sun-Earth space due to their slow motion, providing critical ingredients to enhance space weather, and (5) the slow CMEs studied here lack strong magnetic fields at the Earth but tend to preserve a flux-rope structure with axis generally perpendicular to the radial direction from the Sun. We examine the Sun-to-Earth characteristics of the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) responsible for the geomagnetic storm with combined heliospheric imaging and in situ observations. The first CME, which occurred on 2012 September 25, is a slow event and shows an acceleration followed by a nearly invariant speed in the whole Sun-Earth space. The second event, launched from the Sun on 2012 September 27, exhibits a quick acceleration, then a rapid deceleration, and finally a nearly constant speed, a typical Sun-to-Earth propagation profile for fast CMEs. These two CMEs interacted near 1 AU as predicted by the heliospheric imaging observations and formed a complex ejecta observed at Wind, with a shock inside that enhanced the pre-existing southward magnetic field. Reconstruction of the complex ejecta with the in situ data indicates an overall left-handed flux-rope-like configuration with an embedded concave-outward shock front, a maximum magnetic field strength deviating from the flux rope axis, and convex-outward field lines ahead of the shock. Space weather refers to dynamic conditions on the Sun and in the space environment of the Earth, which are often driven by solar eruptions and their subsequent interplanetary disturbances. It has been unclear how an extreme space weather storm forms and how severe it can be. Here we report and investigate an extreme event with multi-point remote-sensing and in-situ observations. The formation of the extreme storm showed striking novel features. We suggest that the in-transit interaction between two closely launched coronal mass ejections resulted in the extreme enhancement of the ejecta magnetic field observed near 1 AU at STEREO A. The fast transit to STEREO A (in only 18.6 hours), or the unusually weak deceleration of the event, was caused by the preconditioning of the upstream solar wind by an earlier solar eruption. The MHD model predicts that the shock and MIR would reach 120 AU around 2013 April 22, which agrees well with the period of radio emissions and the time of a transient disturbance in galactic cosmic rays detected by Voyager 1. The successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from 2010 July 30 - August 1 present us the first opportunity to study CME-CME interactions with unprecedented heliospheric imaging and in situ observations from multiple vantage points. We describe two cases of CME interactions: merging of two CMEs launched close in time and overtaking of a preceding CME by a shock wave. The first two CMEs on August 1 interact close to the Sun and form a merged front, which then overtakes the July 30 CME near 1 AU, as revealed by wide-angle imaging observations. Connections between imaging observations and in situ signatures at 1 AU suggest that the merged front is a shock wave, followed by two ejecta observed at Wind which seem to have already merged. In situ measurements show that the CME from July 30 is being overtaken by the shock at 1 AU and is significantly compressed, accelerated and heated. The interaction between the preceding ejecta and shock also results in variations in the shock strength and structure on a global scale, as shown by widely separated in situ measurements from Wind and STEREO B. During geomagnetically quiet times, particle precipitation at midlatitudes (2 or = L or = 4) results from a combination of pitch angle diffusion into the bounce loss cone and the opening of the bounce loss cone in the direction of drift to a maximum value which defines the drift loss cone. The geographical distribution of precipitation can thus be determined from geomagnetic field models which give the rate of change of the bounce loss cone size provided that an assumption is made about the spatial distribution of the source region where particles are scattered in the drift loss cone. Some observations indicate that the pitch angle scattering of kilovolt electrons occurs preferentially in the 0600-1200 LT quadrant of the magnetosphere. If the source of drift loss cone electrons is localized, precipitation into the midlatitude atmosphere will depend on both longitude and time of day. A simple model, in which the morning source is represented by a delta function at 0800 LT, leads to a qualitative picture of the morphology of precipitation in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The predictions of this model are consistent with some observations of 29 and 59 keV electrons from the low altitude satellite 1972-76B.

We consider the adiabatic motion of electrons trapped in the model geomagnetic field derived from a scalar potential. The drift shell is specified analytically (i.e., by an approximation given in closed form) in terms of the equatorial pitch angle. The 'radial gradient' is inferred from the diurnal variation of particle flux. This procedure offers an internal test for the absence of time-varying coefficients in the expansion of V. The pitch-angle distribution is directly observed at the noon meridian. The parameters thus determined allow the pitch-angle distribution at other longitudes to be obtained from Liouville's theorem. The results, at least for a well-studied test case, are comparable in quality to those obtained by more difficult methods, using a more complicated field model and the data from two spacecraft, i.e., are in similarly good agreement with the observational data obtained at other longitudes. In particular, we find that the maximum flux at alpha sub 0 = pi/2 occurs at noon (phi = pi) and that the maximum flux j(alpha sub 0, phi = 0) at midnight (phi = 0) occurs at alpha sub 0 not = pi/2.

The first simultaneous observations, made from a single DMSP satellite, of visible auroral arcs, precipitating primary electrons, and atmospheric bremsstrahlung x-rays are presented for a moderately disturbed auroral event. Measured electron fluxes were used to compute absolute x-ray distributions expected at the satellite altitude. The agreement between the calculated and measured x-ray spectra is sufficiently good to suggest that global auroral energy input can be monitored by an orbiting x-ray spectrometer. (Author)

The low energy (0.15-3keV) proportional counter detectors of the A-2 experiment on the x-ray astronomy satellite HEAO-1 have detected night-time atmospheric emissions at the limb of the earth. Three observations of this phenomenon occurred during the first two months of operation. On two occasions, fluxes greater than the diffuse galactic background were detected when the detectors scanned the limb in the vicinity of the magnetic conjugate point of the South Atlantic Anomaly. Enhanced emissions were also observed on a single scan of the atmosphere over northern AfricaThe x-rays are presumed to result from bremsstrahlung generated by precipitating electrons. In the case of the emissions related to the Anomaly conjugate point,it is suggested that the electrons were secondaries backscattered from the atmosphere above the Anomaly during the intensified precipitation of radiation belt particles that occurs throughout a magnetic storm recovery period. These initial observations demonstrate that the earth's atmosphere can be a significant x-ray source at low latitudes as well as in the auroral zones, and hence that it may be practical to remotely monitor the global morphology of particle precipitation by satellite observations of terrestrial x-rays. Future large-scale space missions with payloads of or = 10 million Kg ( or = 10,000 tons), such as the proposed Solar Power Satellite and Space Colonization, will probably require deep-space transportation systems based on the high specific-impulse ion engine. We note in this paper that the ion exhaust emissions corresponding to the proposed large payloads required for such missions may introduce basic modifications in the composition and dynamics of the ionosphere and magnetosphere. We identify some effects that such modifications may induce upon other spacesystems such as earth sensors, radiation belt dosage environment and signal scintillation due to beam-plasma interactions. We find that, because the space environment is tenuous, there is an interaction of sorts among such large-scale space systems and other earth-oriented space systems. The architectural design of such large-scale systems must take into account not only the efficient functioning of their primary mission objectives but also their influence upon the operations of other space systems. Satellite altitude (450 nm) fluxes of 0.1- to 10-KeV auroral x-rays are calculated for some typical forms of incident electron spectra. Both bremsstrahlung and K alpha line emission are included. These calculations indicate that K alpha emission can increase the observable intensity of satellite altitude auroral x-rays by up to 100 times, thereby making soft x-rays an ideal medium for imaging the aurora.
