Background: Over multiple years, the didactic concept of "peer-assisted learning" (PAL) has proved to be valuable for medical education. Particularly in the field of the nowadays widely established Skills-Labs, the assignment of student tutors is both popular and effective. The aim of the underlying study is to assess the current status of PAL programs within German medical faculties' Skills-Labs regarding their distribution, extent, structure and content based on a nation-wide survey.Methods: All 36 medical faculties in Germany were contacted and asked for their participation (via telephone or in written form) in the survey encompassing 16 central questions as to the structure of established PAL programs. Data obtained were subject to quantitative and qualitative analysis.Results: 35 of 36 (97.2%) medical faculties participated in the survey. A PAL program was shown to be established at 33 (91.7%) faculties. However, the results show distinct differences between different faculties with respect to extent and content of the PAL programs.Conclusions: Among German medical Skills-Labs, PAL has been established almost ubiquitously. Further studies on the conception and standardization of training concepts appear to be pivotal for the advancement of PAL in the context of Skills-Labs., Hintergrund: Das didaktische Konzept des "Peer-assisted learning" (PAL) hat sich seit vielen Jahren in der medizinischen Ausbildung als wertvoll erwiesen. Insbesondere im Bereich der inzwischen weit verbreiteten Skills-Labs ist der Einsatz studentischer Tutoren gleichermaßen beliebt wie effektiv. Ziel des vorliegenden Artikels ist, auf Basis einer bundesweiten Befragung den aktuellen Stand über Verbreitung, Umfang und inhaltliche wie strukturelle Ausgestaltung der PAL-Programme in den Skills-Labs der deutschen Medizinischen Fakultäten zu erfassen.Methoden: Sämtliche 36 bundesdeutsche Medizinische Fakultäten wurden kontaktiert und um Teilnahme an der 16 Leitfragen umfassenden Befragung zur Struktur von bestehenden PAL-Programmen im Skills-Lab-Bereich auf telefonischem oder schriftlichem Wege gebeten. Die erhaltenen Daten wurden quantitativ und qualitativ ausgewertet.Ergebnisse: 35 von 36 (97,2%) medizinischen Fakultäten nahmen an der Befragung teil. Ein PAL-Programm existiert an 33 (91,7%) Standorten. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass hinsichtlich Umfang und Inhalten jedoch große Unterschiede zwischen den Fakultäten bestehen. Schlussfolgerungen: PAL ist an bundesdeutschen medizinischen Skills-Labs nahezu flächendeckend umgesetzt. Weitere Untersuchungen zur Konzeption und Standardisierung von Schulungskonzepten scheinen zentral für die Weiterentwicklung von PAL im Skills-Lab.

Background: Learning on the ward as a practice-oriented preparation for the future workplace plays a crucial role in the medical education of future physicians. However, students' ward internship is partially problematic due to condensed workflows on the ward and the high workload of supervising physicians. For the first time in a German-speaking setting, students' expectations and concerns about their internship on the ward are examined in a qualitative analysis regarding their internal medicine rotation within clinical medical education.Methods: Of a total of 168 medical students in their 6th semester at the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg, 28 students (m=8, f=20, Ø 23.6 years) took part in focus group interviews 3 to 5 days prior to their internship on the internal medicine ward within their clinical internal medicine rotation. Students were divided into four different focus groups. The protocols were transcribed and a content analysis was conducted based on grounded theory.Results: We gathered a total of 489 relevant individual statements. The students hope for a successful integration within the ward team, reliable and supportive supervisors and supervision in small groups. They expect to face the most common diseases, to train the most important medical skills, to assume full responsibility for their own patients and to acquire their own medical identity. The students fear an insufficient time frame to achieve their aims. They are also concerned they will have too little contact with patients and inadequate supervision.Conclusion: For the development and standardization of effective student internships, the greatest relevance should be attributed to guidance and supervision by professionally trained and well-prepared medical teachers, entailing a significant increase in staff and costs. Purpose: The acquisition of clinical-technical skills is of particular importance for the doctors of tomorrow. Procedural skills are often trained for the first time in skills laboratories, which provide a sheltered learning environment. However, costs to implement and maintain skills laboratories are considerably high. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate students' patterns of attendance of voluntary skills-lab training sessions and thereby answer the following question: Is it possible to measure an effect of the theoretical construct related to motivational psychology described in the literature - 'Assessment drives learning' - reflected in patterns of attendance at voluntary skills-lab training sessions? By answering this question, design recommendations for curriculum planning and resource management should be derived.Method: A retrospective, descriptive analysis of student skills-lab attendance related to voluntary basic and voluntary advanced skills-lab sessions was conducted. The attendance patterns of a total of 340 third-year medical students in different successive year groups from the Medical Faculty at the University of Heidelberg were assessed.Results: Students showed a preference for voluntary basic skills-lab training sessions, which were relevant to clinical skills assessment, especially at the beginning and at the end of the term. Voluntary advanced skills-lab training sessions without reference to clinical skills assessment were used especially at the beginning of the term, but declined towards the end of term.Conclusion: The results show a clear influence of assessments on students' attendance at skills-lab training sessions. First recommendations for curriculum design and resource management will be described. Die Implementierung und auch Pflege von Skills-Labs stellt allerdings eine nicht geringfügige finanzielle Herausforderung dar. Aus diesem Grund hat sich die vorliegende Arbeit zum Ziel gesetzt, die Besuchsfrequenzen und -muster im Rahmen freiwilliger Skills-Lab-Unterrichtseinheiten zu untersuchen, um folgende Frage zu beantworten: Kann der in der Literatur beschriebene, motivationspsychologische Effekt des "Assessment drives learning" festgestellt werden und spiegelt sich dieser in dem Besuchsverhalten von Studierenden in freiwilligen Skills-Lab-Unterrichtseinheiten wider? Ausgehend von den Studienergebnissen sollen Empfehlungen für die Curriculumsplanung und das Ressourcenmanagement abgeleitet werden.Methode:. It is compared with all known species of the genus, differing in the geometry and size of spicules, and the persistent epizoic growth.
