IntroductionNon-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) encompasses a diverse group of lymphoma subtypes with a wide range in disease course. Previous studies show that hypogammaglobulinemia in treatment-naïve patients is associated with poorer survival in high grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, though it is not known how this applies across all B-cell lymphoid malignancies.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective study of immunoglobulin levels and clinical outcomes including survival, hospitalization, and infection rates in patients diagnosed with B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas of all grades at our institution.ResultsTwo-hundred twenty-three adults (aged = 18 years) with available pre-treatment IgG levels were selected, with hypogammaglobulinemia defined as IgG< 500 mg/mL. For this analysis, we grouped DLBCL (n=90), Primary CNS (n=5), and Burkitt lymphoma (n=1) together as high-grade, while CLL (n=52), mantle cell (n=20), marginal zone (n=25), follicular (n=21), and Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (n=5) were low-grade. The incidence of hypogammaglobulinemia in our cohort of both high and low-grade lymphoma patients was 13.5% (n=30). Across all NHL subtypes, individuals with baseline IgG< 500 mg/dL showed an increased rate of hospitalization (4.453, CI: 1.955-10.54, p= 0.0005) and higher mortality (3.325, CI: 1.258, 8.491, p= 0.013), yet no association in number of infections when compared with those with IgG=500 mg/dL. There was a higher hospitalization rate (3.237, CI: 1.77-6.051, p=0.0017) in those with high-grade lymphoma with hypogammaglobulinemia when compared with low-grade. There was no statistically significant difference in individuals who were alive after three years in those with baseline IgG<500 mg/dL.DiscussionOur study is the first to analyze incidence of hypogammaglobulinemia at the time of diagnosis of NHL as a potential biomarker of interest for future outcomes including hospitalization and infection.

A total of 320 1-day-old broilers were randomly divided into five groups. The control group (CON) received a basal diet, while the FAP4, FAP2, and FAP1 groups were provided with the basal diet supplemented with 4%, 2%, and 1% fermented Astragalus powder, respectively. The unfermented Astragalus powder (UAP2) group was fed the basal diet supplemented with 2% UAP. Each group contained eight replicates of eight chicks each. The results revealed that the final BW and ADG in the FAP 1 and FAP2 were higher than those in the UAP2 and CON groups, while reducing F/G from day 14 to day 42. On day 42, the thymus index in the UAP and FAP groups as well as the bursa index in the FAP4 group showed significant increases compared to those in the CON group. Supplementation with 2% FAP elevated serum IgA levels in broilers on day 28 and day 42, and it also increased serum IgG levels on day 42. Furthermore, supplementation with 2% FAP elevated serum albumin (ALB) levels in broilers, while supplementation with 4% FAP increased serum (glucose) GLU levels in broilers on day 28. The serum biochemical parameters and pathological observation of the liver and kidney in the groups did not show any adverse effects on broilers’ health. In addition, the serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) level significantly increased in the FAP4 and FAP2 groups on day 28, and the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in both serum and liver tissue decreased in the FAP2 group on day 28 and day 42. Compared to the CON group, 2% FAP and 2% UAP supplementation reduced the relative abundance of Bacteroides and supplementation with 2% FAP increased the relative abundance of Alistipes on day 42. In conclusion, the dietary supplementation of FAP can enhance the growth performance, immune function, and antioxidant capacity and regulate microflora in broilers, of which 2% FAP is more effective. It indicates FAP exhibits significant application potential as a promising feed additive for broilers.

Migratory birds may either upregulate their immune system during migration as they might encounter novel pathogens or downregulate their immune system as a consequence of trade-offs with the resource costs of migration. Support for the latter comes not least from a study that reports a positive correlation in autumn migrating birds between fuel stores and parameters of innate and acquired immune function, that is, energy-exhausted migrants appear to have lowered immune function. However, to our knowledge, no study has tested whether this pattern exists in spring migrating birds, which may face other trade-offs than autumn migrants. Here, we investigate if in spring there is a relationship between fuel stores and microbial-killing ability, a measure of innate immune function, and total immunoglobulin (IgY), a measure of acquired immune function, in four migrating bird species: chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs), dunnocks (Prunella modularis), song thrushes (Turdus philomelos) and northern wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe). Our findings indicate no significant correlation between fuel stores and either microbial killing ability or IgY levels when considering all species collectively. When analysing species separately, we found a significant negative correlation between fuel stores and microbial-killing ability in chaffinches and a positive correlation between fuel stores and IgY levels in wheatears. In song thrushes, but not in any of the other species, there was a significant negative correlation between relative arrival date and microbial-killing ability and between arrival date and IgY levels. Sex did not affect immune function in any of the species. Our study suggests that the relationship between immune function and fuel stores may be different during spring migration compared to autumn migration. Introduction: The effects of low energy availability (LEA) on the immune system are poorly understood. This study examined the effects of 14 days of LEA on immune cell redox balance and inflammation at rest and in response to acute exercise, and exercise performance in female athletes. Methods: Twelve female endurance athletes (age: 26.8 +/- 3.4 yrs, maximum oxygen uptake ((V) over dotO(2max)): 55.2 +/- 5.1 mL x min(-1) x kg(-1)) were included in a randomized, single-blinded crossover study. They were allocated to begin with either 14 days of optimal energy availability diet (OEA, 52 +/- 2 kcal x kg fat free mass (FFM)(-1) x day(-1)) or LEA diet (22 +/- 2 kcal x kg FFM-1 x day(-1)), followed by 3 days of refueling (OEA) with maintained training volume. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated, and plasma obtained at rest before and after each dietary period. The PBMCs were used for analysis of mitochondrial respiration and H2O2 emission and specific proteins. Exercise performance was assessed on cycle by a 20-min time trial and time to exhaustion at an intensity corresponding to similar to 110 % (V) over dotO(2max)). Results: LEA was associated with a 94 % (P = 0.003) increase in PBMC NADPH oxidase 2 protein content, and a 22 % (P = 0.013) increase in systemic cortisol. LEA also caused an alteration of several inflammatory related proteins (P < 0.05). Acute exercise augmented H2O2 emission in PBMCs (P < 0.001) following both OEA and LEA, but to a greater extent following LEA. LEA also reduced the mobilization of white blood cells with acute exercise. After LEA, performance was reduced in both exercise tests (P < 0.001), and the reduced time trial performance remained after the 3 days of refueling (P < 0.001). Background: Cancer is a growing problem worldwide, and new strategies for its management and treatment are  required. The immune system plays a crucial role in cancer progression and the response to treatment. Recent studies  have demonstrated that practicing yoga can positively affect the immune system. This review aimed to examine the  impact of yoga on immune parameters in patients with cancer. Methods: We conducted literature searches across several scientific databases for trials published from 2014 to 2023.  Studies were selected based on specific criteria, including randomized controlled trials involving yoga interventions  with quantitative outcome assessments. Results: Eight studies met our inclusion criteria. These findings suggest that practicing yoga can significantly improve  immune function in patients with cancer. Key findings include reductions in inflammatory cytokines, improvements  in natural killer cell counts, and modulated gene expression related to immune cell survival. Specific studies have  demonstrated benefits in reducing stress and fatigue, enhancing overall quality of life (QoL), and immunological  benefits. Conclusion: This review indicates that yoga interventions hold substantial promise in enhancing immune function  and overall QoL in patients with cancer.

Due to their antiketogenic and antioxidant effects, chestnut tannins may offer a viable approach to manage the impaired immune and renal functions in transition cows. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with chestnut tannins on haematological, biochemical and antioxidant indices, as well as cortisol levels in prepartum dairy cows. Forty multiparous Holstein cows were divided into two homogeneous groups (n = 20): a control (CON), and an experimental group (CNT) receiving 20 g/day of chestnut tannins for the last 25 ± 2 days of pregnancy. Haematological and biochemical indices, cortisol concentration and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were measured in blood samples collected 25 (day −25) and 5 days (day −5) before the expected parturition. The addition of chestnut tannins exerted no significant effect on red blood cells indices; however, white blood cell (P = 0.02), lymphocyte (P = 0.05) and platelet (P < 0.01) counts were higher, while the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (P = 0.03) was lower on day −5 in the CNT group compared to the CON group. Significantly higher values of T-AOC (P = 0.03) and significantly lower levels of triglycerides (P = 0.03) and gammaglutamyl transferase (P = 0.02) were also found in CNT compared to CON on day −5. The improved haematological profile in CNT cows was accompanied by lower serum creatinine concentration (P = 0.04), while total protein, calcium, phosphorus and cortisol did not differ significantly between CNT and CON cows. These data demonstrate that dietary chestnut tannin supplementation in a closeup diet has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and could potentially mitigate immune suppression and kidney dysfunction near parturition. Further research should be conducted concerning the mechanisms underlying these responses.

In this experiment, brewer's yeast was used to replace part of the fish meal in the feed to formulate a high-fat and low-protein feed for Taiwan loach. The effects of brewer's yeast on the growth performance, muscle quality, hepatopancreas and pancreas carnitine content, intestinal flora, immunity, and antioxidant ability of Taiwan loach were preliminarily investigated. In experiment 1, 600 Taiwan loaches were randomly divided into 4 groups, and 1% (group A), 4% (group B), 8% (group C), and 12% (group D) of brewer's yeast was substituted for an equal amount of fishmeal in the basal diets. The loaches in each group were fed for 60 d. In experiment 2, 60 Taiwan loaches were selected and randomly divided into a control group (Group E) and a test group (Group F). The loaches were fed the basal diet and the high-fat and low-protein diet supplemented with 8% fishmeal, replaced by brewer's yeast. The experiment lasted for 60 days, and the growth performance, hepatopancreas carnitine content, muscle quality, intestinal flora, plasma antioxidant, and immune capacity indices of loaches in each group were determined. The results were as follows: the weight gain rate and specific growth rate were significantly higher in group C than those in groups A, B, and D (P < 0.05); the intestinal length ratio, muscle hardness, hepatopancreatic carnitine content, plasma superoxide dismutase activity, catalase activity, total antioxidant capacity, and lysozyme activity were significantly greater in group F than those in group E (P < 0.05); the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium counts in Group F were considerably higher than those in Group E (P < 0.05), and the Salmonella counts in Group F was significantly lower than that in Group E (P < 0.05); the survival rate, weight gain rate, bait coefficient, muscle crude protein, crude fat, viscosity, elasticity, cohesion, chewability, and restorative capacity were not significantly different between Group F and G

CRC patients may experience significant psychological stress and are susceptible to depression and anxiety. Previous studies have shown that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can reduce fatigue and improve quality of life among breast cancer patients. However, as a non-pharmaceutical treatment, it remains unclear whether CBT improves chemotherapy-induced side effects and immune function in CRC patients. In this study, we will conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) among CRC patients undergoing chemotherapy to determine whether CBT can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and improve the immune function of CRC patients. Methods: The study will be a single-center RCT. CRC patients undergoing chemotherapy will receive either eight sessions of group-based CBT (every 2-3 weeks) or usual care (usual oncology care). Each participant will undergo assessments at baseline (T0), immediately post-intervention (T1), 3 months postintervention (T2), and 6 months post-intervention (T3). The primary outcome will include chemotherapyinduced side effects in CRC patients. The secondary outcome will be immune function (measured by levels of inflammatory cytokines). Current knowledge of Alzheimer's disease (AD) etiology and effective therapy remains limited. Thus, the identification of biomarkers is crucial to improve the detection and treatment of patients with AD. Using robust rank aggregation method to analyze the microarray data from Gene Expression Omnibus database, we identified 1138 differentially expressed genes in AD. We then explored 13 hub genes by weighted gene co-expression network analysis, least absolute shrinkage, and selection operator, and logistic regression in the training dataset. The detection model, which composed of CD163, CDC42SE1, CECR6, CSF1R, CYP27A1, EIF4E3, H2AFJ, IFIT2, IL10RA, KIAA1324, PSTPIP1, SLA, and TBC1D2 genes, along with APOE gene, showed that the area under the curve for detecting AD was 0.821 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.782–0.861) and the model was validated in ADNI dataset (area under the curve = 0.776; 95%CI = 0.686–0.865). Notably, the 13 genes in the model were highly enriched in immune function. These findings have implications for the detection and therapeutic target of AD.

High altitude is a physiologically stressful environment due to oxygen limitation and low atmospheric pressure. Despite these conditions, over 160 million people live, work, or travel to high altitude annually. Several systemic physiological changes in response to hypoxia promote acclimatization to high altitude. However, even in acclimatized individuals, there is still a significant risk of developing high-altitude illnesses (HAIs), such as acute mountain sickness, high-altitude pulmonary edema, or high-altitude cerebral edema. While it is clear that HAIs result from high altitude/hypoxia, gaps in our knowledge remain regarding the underlying mechanisms that drive the development of these pathologies. The molecular pathways that control hypoxia responses are evolutionary conserved and have significant crosstalk to essential mechanisms that drive inflammation. While these responses may be key for acute adaptation to hypoxia, they may become maladaptive if not properly mediated. For example, native highlanders show evidence of natural selection for traits that promote adaptation to chronic hypoxia, but different native high-altitude populations display distinct adaptations. However, not all these adaptations are beneficial. Most notably, Andean highlanders have a high prevalence of Chronic Mountain Sickness (CMS), an incapacitating syndrome induced by lifelong exposure to hypoxia. The underlying mechanisms behind CMS are also unknown, however it has been suspected that inflammation may play a role in CMS pathogenesis. The goal of my dissertation research was to determine how high-altitude hypoxia induces changes in inflammatory profiles and immune cell populations. Furthermore, I aimed to investigate if immune cells at high altitude are sensitized to inflammatory stimuli, and if these responses are dependent on hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) activity. The kynurenine pathway is responsible for a majority of tryptophan metabolism. It has been intricately linked to both aging and immune function, yet its exact roles in the two processes has not been fully characterized. The only well-established regulation of the kynurenine pathway is the control of flux via activity of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). We have chosen C. elegans and M. musculus to establish how some kynurenine pathway components impact aging and immune function and how these components are regulated. We found that accumulation of the kynurenine pathway intermediate metabolite 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3HAA) through supplementation or inhibition of the catabolizing enzyme 3-hydroxyanthranilate 3,4-dioxygenase (HAAO) increases lifespan and several aspects of health. We also found that these kynurenine pathway interventions improve pathogen response and decrease infection progression. The kynurenine pathway is normally upregulated during pathogen response in C. elegans but we found that 3HAA may be regulated via tissue separation of synthesis by kynureninase (KYNU) in the hypodermal tissue and degradation by HAAO in the neuronal tissue. The special temporal separation of synthesis and degradation of 3HAA allow for intermediate function of the metabolite not previously characterized. Ultimately, 3HAA’s impact on immune function may be due to antimicrobial activity and localization to the interface between host and pathogen in the gut granules. The special temporal regulation of 3HAA combined with the immune enhancement may, in part, explain the life extending properties of supplementation and HAAO inhibition. This may also provide further insight into the overall role of these kynurenine pathway components in aging and immune function.

A central theme in the field of ecology is understanding how environmental variables influence a species' distribution. In the last 20 years, there has been particular attention given to understanding adaptive physiological traits that allow some species to persist in urban environments. However, there is no clear consensus on how urbanization influences physiology, and it is unclear whether physiological differences in urban birds are directly linked to adverse outcomes or are representative of urban birds adaptively responding to novel environmental variables. Moreover, though low-density suburban development is the fastest advancing form of urbanization, most studies have focused on animals inhabiting high intensity urban habitats. In this study, we measured a suite of physiological variables that reflect condition and immune function in male song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) from rural and suburban habitats. Specifically, we measured hematological indices [packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)], circulating glutathione (total, reduced, and oxidized), oxidative damage (d-ROM concentration), antioxidant capacity, and components of the innate immune system [bacteria killing ability (BKA), white blood cell counts]. We also measured whole-animal indices of health, including body condition (scaled mass index length) and furcular fat. Song sparrows inhabiting suburban environments exhibited lower hemoglobin and MCHC, but higher body condition and furcular fat scores. We aimed to assess the effects of serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) and thoracic paravertebral nerve block (TPVB) on analgesia, immune function and serum tumor markers in patients after thoracoscopic radical resection of lung cancer. A total of 132 patients enrolled from February 2019 to November 2020 were prospectively selected and randomly divided into 3 groups (n=44). Control group received general anesthesia. After induction of general anesthesia, TPVB or SAPB group was given TPVB or SAPB. Their clinical data, operation conditions, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score, immune function, serum tumor markers and adverse reactions were compared. TPVB and SAPB groups had lower dosage of sufentanil during operation, later time of first pressing patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCA) pump after operation and smaller number of pressing PCA pump within 48 h after operation than those of control group (P<0.05). VAS scores at rest and coughing decreased 6 and 12 h after operation in TPVB and SAPB groups compared with that in control group (P<0.05). Cluster of differentiation 3 (CD3)+, CD4+ and CD4+/ CD8+ ratio were higher, while CD8+ was lower 24 and 48 h after operation in TPVB and SAPB groups than those of control group (P<0.05). TPVB and SAPB groups had lower serum tumor marker levels 24 h after operation than those of control group (P<0.05). The three groups had similar incidence rates of adverse reactions (P>0.05). SAPB and TPVB can markedly improve postoperative analgesic effect, enhance immune function and decrease serum tumor marker levels in patients receiving thoracoscopic radical resection of lung cancer, without increasing adverse reactions. Background: The large inter-individual variability in immune-cell cell composition and function determines immune responses in general and susceptibility to immune-mediated diseases in particular. While much has been learned about the genetic variants relevant for type 1 diabetes (T1D), the pathophysiological mechanisms through which these variations exert their effects remain unknown. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 243 patients with T1D of Dutch descent. We applied genetic association analysis on > 200 immune cell traits and >100 cytokine production profiles in response to stimuli measured to identify genetic determinants of immune function, and compared the results obtained in T1D to healthy controls. Results: Genetic variants that determine susceptibility to T1D significantly affect T cell composition. Specifically, the CCR5+ regulatory T cells associate with T1D through the CCR region, suggesting a shared genetic regulation. Genome-wide quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping analysis of immune traits revealed 15 genetic loci that influence immune responses in T1D, including 12 that have never been reported in healthy population studies, implying a disease-specific genetic regulation. Conclusion: This study provides new insights into the genetic factors that affect immunological responses in T1D.

The aging process can be influenced by environmental factors, such as the social environment. The continuous cohabitation of the chronologically old mice with adult animals improves them at the behavioral level, immune function, oxidative stress and longevity, but causes a deterioration of these parameters in adults. Therefore, the objective of the study was to study whether the coexistence for only 15 min a day of old mice with adult mice, can produce that improvement and greater longevity in old animals without causing deterioration in adults. For that, old and adult CD1 female mice, after two months of that social interaction, were submitted to a behavioral battery and then peritoneal leukocytes were collected to assess several immune functions, oxidative and inflammatory stress parameters as well as catecholamine concentrations. When the adult mice reached old age, the same parameters were again analyzed. The life span of each animal was also recorded. Plasmatic concentration of oxytocin was also studied. The results showed that old mice presented better behavioral capacity, immunity and oxi-inflammatory state after this social interaction with adult animals, and consequently an extended life span. Adult mice, in general, did not show any changes after social interaction with old animals, but when they achieved old age, improvements of some parameters and of longevity were observed in comparison with animals that never had a that social interaction. Smoking can weaken immune function as reported in previous studies. However, benefits of exercise in reducing negative effects of smoking on salivary lactoferrin responses is scarce to date. Hence, the purpose of this study is to determine the effects of an acute bout of exercise on salivary lactoferrin responses among smokers and non-smokers. Eighteen sedentary men were recruited; nine smokers (age = 22.4 ± 1.4 years; BMI = 22.1 ± 1.1 kg/m2) and nine non-smokers (age = 22.1 ± 0.7 years old; BMI = 22.5 ± 1.9 kg/m2). In this study, participants cycled at an intensity of 60% maximum heart rate for 60 minutes. Participants were given cool water as much as 3 ml/kg body weight at minutes 20 and 40 during the exercise session. Participants’ body weight and saliva samples were collected at pre and post-exercise. Heart rate and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded at pre, during and post-exercise. Mixed ANOVA was used to measure significant differences between groups and within group. The results showed that saliva flow rate, lactoferrin concentration and lactoferrin secretion rate were not significantly different (p>0.05) between smokers and non-smokers groups and also between pre and post-exercise within each group. Heart rate and RPE showed significant increased (p<0.05) during the exercise session in both groups. As a conclusion, acute bout of exercised does not affect salivary lactoferrin responses among sedentary smokers and non-smokers men.

Background: It is unclear whether energy intake can impact the incidence of upper respiratory symptoms (URS). The purpose of this study was to examine if there are differences in energy intake between symptomatic (SYM) and asymptomatic (ASYM) groups of URS in Ironman-triathletes. Methods: Thirty-three subjects competing in the Lake Placid Ironman-triathlon (mean±SD; age,37±8y; height,178±8cm; mass,76.3±10.4kg; body fat,10.8±3.8%) were randomized into either the control (CON) or intervention (INT). INT consumed 4-commercial recovery drinks, two immediately post-race and two 3-hours post-race. Calorie and macronutrient intake were recorded pre-, during, and post-race. Subjects completed the Wisconsin URS Survey to assess URS over the next two weeks. Two analyses were done by comparing results between CON and INT, and when subjects were classified as either asymptomatic (ASYM=20) or symptomatic (SYM=13). Results: There were no differences in energy intake (p>0.05) and URS (INT,32±38; CON,16±23; p=0.155). However, on the race day, SYM (9,044±2,598kcal) consumed less energy intake than ASYM (10,991±2497kcal) (p=0.044). Also, SYM consumed less energy the day before the race (p=0.031) and post-race (p=0.008). ASYM consumed greater carbohydrate the day before the race (p=0.032), fat the day of the race (p=0.006), carbohydrate post-race (p=0.08) and fat post-race (p=0.002). Conclusions: Overall energy intake was similar between CON and INT. However, when subjects were differentiated by URS, SYM consumed less calories the day before and day of the race versus ASYM.

Smoking can weaken immune function as reported in previous studies. However, benefits of exercise in reducing negative effects of smoking on salivary lactoferrin responses is scarce to date. Hence, the purpose of this study is to determine the effects of an acute bout of exercise on salivary lactoferrin responses among smokers and non-smokers. Eighteen sedentary men were recruited; nine smokers (age = 22.4 ± 1.4 years; BMI = 22.1 ± 1.1 kg/m2) and nine non-smokers (age = 22.1 ± 0.7 years old; BMI = 22.5 ± 1.9 kg/m2). In this study, participants cycled at an intensity of 60% maximum heart rate for 60 minutes. Participants were given cool water as much as 3 ml/kg body weight at minutes 20 and 40 during the exercise session. Participants’ body weight and saliva samples were collected at pre and post-exercise. Heart rate and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded at pre, during and post-exercise. Mixed ANOVA was used to measure significant differences between groups and within group. The results showed that saliva flow rate, lactoferrin concentration and lactoferrin secretion rate were not significantly different (p>0.05) between smokers and non-smokers groups and also between pre and post-exercise within each group. Heart rate and RPE showed significant increased (p<0.05) during the exercise session in both groups. As a conclusion, acute bout of exercised does not affect salivary lactoferrin responses among sedentary smokers and non-smokers men.

The purpose of this study was to examine if there are differences in energy intake between symptomatic (SYM) and asymptomatic (ASYM) groups of URS in Ironman-triathletes. Methods: Thirty-three subjects competing in the Lake Placid Ironman-triathlon (mean±SD; age,37±8y; height,178±8cm; mass,76.3±10.4kg; body fat,10.8±3.8%) were randomized into either the control (CON) or intervention (INT). INT consumed 4-commercial recovery drinks, two immediately post-race and two 3-hours post-race. Calorie and macronutrient intake were recorded pre-, during, and post-race. Subjects completed the Wisconsin URS Survey to assess URS over the next two weeks. Two analyses were done by comparing results between CON and INT, and when subjects were classified as either asymptomatic (ASYM=20) or symptomatic (SYM=13). Results: There were no differences in energy intake (p>0.05) and URS (INT,32±38; CON,16±23; p=0.155). However, on the race day, SYM (9,044±2,598kcal) consumed less energy intake than ASYM (10,991±2497kcal) (p=0.044). Also, SYM consumed less energy the day before the race (p=0.031) and post-race (p=0.008). ASYM consumed greater carbohydrate the day before the race (p=0.032), fat the day of the race (p=0.006), carbohydrate post-race (p=0.08) and fat post-race (p=0.002). Conclusions: Overall energy intake was similar between CON and INT. However, when subjects were differentiated by URS, SYM consumed less calories the day before and day of the race versus ASYM.

Due to a swift and continuous growth of the insect rearing industry during the last two decades, there is a need for a better understanding of insect diseases (caused by insect pathogens). In the insect production sector, insect diseases are a bottleneck for every type and scale of rearing system with different degrees of technology investment (i.e. semi-open rearing, closed rearing, industrial production, small-scale farming). In this paper, we provide an overview of insect pathogens that are causing disease in the most common insect species reared or collected for use in food and feed. We also include a few examples of diseases of insect species, which are not (yet) reported to be used as food or feed; those examples may increase our understanding of insect diseases in general and for the development of disease prevention and control measures. We pay special attention to the effect of selected biotic and abiotic factors as potential triggers of insect diseases. We discuss the effect of such factors in combination with other production variables on disease development and insect immunocompetence. Additionally, we touch upon prevention and control measures that have been carried out and suggested up to now for insect production systems. Finally, we point towards possible future research directions with possibilities to enhance the resilience of insect production to insect disease outbreaks.

There is considerable agreement that the gastrointestinal microbiota contributes to the performance and health of the neonate, and this relationship includes an ability of the host animal to “sense” changes in the microbial community. Identifying the mechanisms used by the host to sense microbiota is one approach to developing methods to manipulate the microbiota to improve pig health and performance. Diet-independent microbial products are molecules unique to the microbial community and sensed by host pattern recognition receptors stimulating inflammation. Common among all members of the microbial community, their presence is unaffected by diet, but the nature of the response does depends on factors affecting the microenvironment in which the molecule is detected. Diet-dependent microbial products arise as products of fermentation of dietary components and include short-chain fatty acids, ammonia, phenols, hydrogen sulfide, amines, and many other compounds. A plethora of sensing mechanisms exists that include enzymatic metabolism as well as membrane receptors that have evolved to respond to microbial products (e.g., short-chain fatty acid receptors), or simply cross-react with microbial products. This review focuses on host mechanisms used to sense the intestinal microbiota and attempts to establish practical considerations for neonatal gut health based on current understanding.

Seasonal variation in immune function can be attributed to life history trade-offs, and to variation in environmental conditions. However, because phenological stages and environmental conditions co-vary in temperate and arctic zones, their separate contributions have not been determined. We compared immune function and body mass of incubating (female only), chick-feeding (female and male), and non-breeding (female and male) red-capped larks Calandrella cinerea breeding year-round in three tropical equatorial (Kenya) environments with distinct climates. We measured four immune indices: haptoglobin, nitric oxide, agglutination, and lysis. To confirm that variation in immune function between breeding (i.e., incubating or chick-feeding) and non-breeding was not confounded by environmental conditions, we tested if rainfall, average minimum temperature (Tmin), and average maximum temperature (Tmax) differed during sampling times among the three breeding statuses per location. Tmin and Tmax differed between chick-feeding and non-breeding, suggesting that birds utilized environmental conditions differently in different locations for reproduction. Immune indices did not differ between incubating, chick-feeding and non-breeding birds in all three locations. There were two exceptions: nitric oxide was higher during incubation in cool and wet South Kinangop, and it was higher during chick-feeding in the cool and dry North Kinangop compared to non-breeding birds in these locations. For nitric oxide, agglutination, and lysis, we found among-location differences within breeding stage. In equatorial tropical birds, variation in immune function seems to be better explained by among-location climate-induced environmental conditions than by breeding status. Our findings raise questions about how within-location environmental variation relates to and affects immune function.

Almost all species face some degree of predation risk, and, hence, evolution has produced a plethora of anti-predator defences. However, anti-predator strategies require resources, and the prevailing risk of becoming prey is influenced by many factors and rarely constant across time and space. Evolution has therefore favoured the development of phenotypic plasticity in anti-predator defences. The capacity of a single genotype to fine-tune its phenotype according to the prevailing risk of predation results in a closer phenotype-environment match in the mercurial environments of the natural world. Interest in the ecology and evolution of inducible defences has progressed the development of its theoretical underpinnings, along with empirical tests of theoretical predictions. Inter-individual differences in the expression of inducible traits are nowadays understood ubiquitous, and this intriguing variation holds possibility to bridge our current knowledge gap on the proximate, physiological mechanisms underlying inducible morphological defence regulation. In this thesis, I address unanswered questions on the proximate, physiological processes behind phenotypic plasticity in morphological defences. I first examine classic resource-allocation trade-offs to search for hidden physiological costs coupled with perceived predation risk and investment into a morphological defence. I further employ a recent hypothesis of physiological stress being the mechanism driving morphological defence regulation. To test my predictions, I have used a well-established model system for the study of inducible morphological defences, the crucian carp (Carassius carassius). I show that innate immune functions are altered by predator exposure, and that the defence against pathogens is correlated with the morphological defence against larger-sized enemies (predators). Increasing evidence suggests that probiotic supplementation may be efficacious in counteracting age-related shifts in gut microbiota composition and diversity, thereby impacting health outcomes and promoting healthy aging. However, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with probiotics in healthy older adults have utilized a wide variety of strains and focused on several different outcomes with conflicting results. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to determine which outcomes have been investigated in randomized controlled trials with probiotic supplementation in healthy older adults and what has been the effect of these interventions. For inclusion, studies reporting on randomized controlled trials with probiotic and synbiotic supplements in healthy older adults (defined as minimum age of 60 years) were considered. Studies reporting clinical trials in specific patient groups or unhealthy participants were excluded. In addition to assessment of eligibility and data extraction, each study was examined for risk of bias and quality assessment was performed by two independent reviewers. Due to the heterogeneity of outcomes, strains, study design, duration, and methodology, we did not perform any meta-analyses and instead provided a narrative overview of the outcomes examined. Of 1997 potentially eligible publications, 17 studies were included in this review. The risk of bias was low, although several studies failed to adequately describe random sequence generation, allocation concealment, and blinding. The overall study quality was high; however, many studies did not include sample calculations, and the majority of studies had a small sample size. The main outcomes examined in the trials included microbiota composition, immune-related measurements, digestive health, general well-being, cognitive function, and lipid and other biomarkers. With aging the immune response is impaired. This immunosenescence, in which an alteration of the redox state of the immune cells appears, is involved in the rate of aging. Since leukocyte function is a good marker of health and predictor of longevity, the effects of daily oral administration of the antioxidant vitamin C (500 mg), or both vitamin C (500 mg) and vitamin E (200 mg) on several blood neutrophil (adherence, chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and superoxide anion levels) and lymphocyte (adherence, chemotaxis, proliferation, interleukin-2 secretion and natural killer activity) functions were studied in healthy elderly men and women. These parameters were analysed before supplementation, after 3 months of supplementation, and 6 months after the end of supplementation. The results showed that vitamin C, in elderly participants, improved the immune functions studied which achieved values close to those of young adults. These effects were maintained in several functions after 6 months without supplementation. Similar effects were found in the elderly supplemented with both vitamin C and E. The red crossbill, Loxia curvirostra, is a songbird that can breed opportunistically if conifer seeds are abundant, on both short, cold, and long, warm days, providing an ideal system to investigate environmental and reproductive effects on immunity. In this study, we measured inter- and intra-annual variation in complement, natural antibodies, PIT54 and leucocytes in crossbills across four summers (2010-2013) and multiple seasons within 1 year (summer 2011-spring 2012). Overall, we observed substantial changes in crossbill immune investment among summers, with interannual variation driven largely by food resources, while variation across multiple seasons within a single cone year was less pronounced and lacked a dominant predictor of immune investment. However, we found weak evidence that physiological processes (e.g. reproductive condition, moult) or abiotic factors (e.g. temperature, precipitation) affect immune investment. Collectively, this study suggests that a reproductively flexible organism may be able to invest in both reproduction and survival-related processes, potentially by exploiting rich patches with abundant resources. Vitamin D is essential for several physiological functions and biological processes. Increasing levels of maternal vitamin D are required throughout pregnancy as a unique source of vitamin D for the fetus, and consequently maternal vitamin D deficiency may result in several adverse outcomes in newborns. However, the genetic regulation of vitamin D in pregnancy and at birth is not yet well understood. We performed genome-wide association studies of maternal midgestational serum-derived and neonatal blood-spot-derived total 25-hydroxyvitamin D from a case-control study of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We identified one fetal locus (rs4588) significantly associated with neonatal vitamin D levels in the GC gene, encoding the binding protein for the transport and function of vitamin D. We also found suggestive cross-associated loci for neonatal and maternal vitamin D near immune genes, such as CXCL6-IL8 and ACKR1 We found no interactions with ASD. However, when including a set of cases with intellectual disability but not ASD (N = 179), we observed a suggestive interaction between decreased levels of neonatal vitamin D and a specific maternal genotype near the PKN2 gene. Our results suggest that genetic variation influences total vitamin D levels during pregnancy and at birth via proteins in the vitamin D pathway, but also potentially via distinct mechanisms involving loci with known roles in immune function that might be involved in vitamin D pathophysiology in pregnancy.

The production and structure of animal signals may depend on an individual's health status and may provide more than one type of information to receivers. While alarm calls are not typically viewed as health condition dependent, recent studies have suggested that their structure, and possibly their propensity to be emitted, depends on an individual's health condition and state. We asked whether the propensity of yellow-bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventer) to emit calls is influenced by their immunological or parasite status, by quantifying both trap-elicited and natural calling rates as a function of their neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NL) ratio, the presence of a blood borne trypanosome, and the presence of several intestinal parasites (Eimeria sp., Entamoeba sp., and Ascaris sp.). We fitted mixed effects models to determine if the health measures we collected were associated with the probability of calling in a trap and with annual rates of natural alarm calling. Marmots infected with a blood-borne trypanosome were marginally more likely to call naturally and when trapped, while those infected with the intestinal parasite Ascaris were less likely to call when trapped. NL ratio was not directly associated with in-trap calling probability, but males were more likely to call when they had higher NL ratios. Thus, health conditions, such as parasite infection and immune system activation, can modulate the production of alarm signals and potentially provide information to both predators and prey about the caller's condition. Playback experiments are required to confirm if receivers use such information.
