Purpose: Over the last 60 years, intensification of soil cultivation led to an acceleration of soil erosion and sediment delivery to river systems. In Martinique, this acceleration has led to the remobilization of a toxic insecticide (i.e. chlordecone) used in the 1970s-1990s to control banana weevil. A previous study attributed this accelerated remobilization to the application of glyphosate in plantations from the 1990s onwards. To further unambiguously confirm this link, the identification of soil erosion sources supplied to coastal sediment is essential. Methods: Accordingly, sediment fingerprinting tools were adapted and applied to a coastal sediment core collected in the Galion Bay. Potential source samples (n=37) were collected across the drainage area. Along with the coastal sediment core layers, these samples were analysed for potential tracing properties. The optimal suite of tracers was then selected and introduced into an un-mixing model to quantify their contributions to coastal sediment. Results: Results showed that subsoil (i.e. soil layer cm depth) and banana plantation soil surface supply the major sources of sediment (49-78% and 12-36%, respectively) to the Galion Bay and that their contributions increased since 2000, in line with chlordecone and glyphosate fluxes. Conclusion: This evolution may be attributed to the higher sensitivity of banana plantations to erosion that may have been enhanced by the glyphosate application leaving the soil uncovered with vegetation and to the contamination of both topsoil and deep soil layers ( cm) layers with chlordecone due to its vertical transfer along the soil profile and its redistribution across hillslopes.

Climate change can alter the deep-sea through increased bottom temperatures, loss of oxygen, and modifications to deep water circulation. Despite the potential of these profound impacts, the mechanisms enabling these systems and their ecosystems to persist, function and respond to oceanic, crustal, and anthropogenic forces remain poorly understood. This is due primarily to technological challenges and difficulties in accessing, observing and monitoring the deep-sea. In this context, the development of deep-sea observatories in the 2000s focused on understanding the coupling between sub-surface flow and oceanic and crustal conditions, and how they influence biological processes. This work presents a new method for determining iron-porphyrin-like complexes (Fe-Py) based on Continuous Flow Analysis (CFA) with chemiluminescence detection and its application to natural waters in an estuarine environment. The involved reaction is founded on luminol oxidation by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Fe-Py complexes at pH 13. The detection limit is 7.2 pM hemin equivalent, the linear range extends to 150 nM and precision of the method is 6.4% at 0.25 nM (n = 8). This new method's detection limit is 15 times lower than the previous analytical procedure of Vong et al. (2007), based on Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) and using different chemical conditions. Moreover, the presented method is fast (90s/analysis), involves a low consumption of reagents, a small sample volume, and simplified sample handling. The method was applied to natural samples collected along the temperate macrotidal Aulne estuary (Bay of Brest, France). Here, we report for the first time on the spatial distribution of the Fe-Py complex concentration (dissolved, reactive particulate) over the entire salinity gradient of a macrotidal temperate estuary. The Fe-Py concentrations in the riverine and marine end-members were 0.873 ± 0.007 nM (S = 0.92) and 0.010 ± 0.004 nM (S = 34.86), respectively. Between these two salinities, non-conservative behaviour was observed, with an increase in Fe-Py concentrations to 1.142 ± 0.031 nM at S = 5.2 corresponding to the Maximum Turbidity Zone (MTZ), followed by a strong removal of Fe-Py in the salinity range 5–20. Then, the Fe-Py concentrations decreased linearly during mixing processes, reaching picomolar levels towards the coastal waters. The estimated entering flux from the river equaled 240 ± 2 g.d−1 whereas the net flux to coastal sea waters was 95 ± 10 g.d−1 leading to a loss of ~60%. Copper (Cu) sensing in the nanomolar range is an important challenge for marine water monitoring, especially with eco-friendly materials and reagents. For this purpose, electrochemical Cu(II) sensors appear as fully suitable because of their relatively high sensitivity, selectivity and adaptability for in situ measurements. So far, one of the usual electrochemical methods for Cu(II) sensing is adsorptive anodic stripping voltammetry (AdASV), since it offers a good selectivity, accumulation at open circuit potential and a reliable analytical response for concentrations above 10 nmol.L−1. Surprisingly, no work has ever addressed an electrocatalytic procedure to enhance the electrochemical copper sensing and allowed detection below 10 nM. Thus, we have developed an original two-step strategy based on the surface modification of pencil graphite electrodes (PGE) with p-aminobenzyl-C-functionalized cyclam, a strong chelating ligand for Cu(II), as well as the use of a simple reaction which can be electrocatalyzed by Cu such as HER (Hydrogen Evolution Reaction) to finally determine the accumulated amount of copper catalyst on the PGE. We show here that i) a well-defined diffusion-limited catalytic peak can be obtained from cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments with Cu(II)-cyclam-modified PGE, ii) this HER peak potential is correlated to copper surface concentration, which can be sensed at the same time by adsorptive anodic stripping voltammetry and iii) peak shift analysis (SA) of the voltammetric curves is a more sensitive method than the commonly used stripping voltammetry to reveal copper accumulation at modified PGE. Indeed, the limit of detection (LOD) reached with this method is one order of magnitude lower compared to AdASV (LOD = 1.1 nM and 16 nM, respectively). These results illustrate the ability of electrocatalysis to be a relevant tool under certain conditions for metal trace detection through SA.

Au Bénin, les déchets issus de la transformation du bois sont très insuffisamment valorisés dans une perspective de réutilisation par l'industrie du bois. Les technologies de transformation de ces produits connexes, économiquement accessibles aux populations des pays en développement, constituent un domaine très peu abordé dans la littérature internationale. Dans le présent travail, un matériau constitué d'un mélange de sciure de bois de teck et de pâte de polystyrène recyclés, suivant une technologie simple à mettre en oeuvre et de type low-tech, a été caractérisé. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les propriétés du composite varient significativement avec la granulométrie de la sciure utilisée. La masse volumique apparente du matériau est comprise entre 686 à 826 kg/m3, son taux d'absorption d'eau est inférieur à 15 % et son taux de gonflement en épaisseur est inférieur à 5 % après 24 heures d'immersion. Une corrélation élevée a été observée entre ses propriétés physiques et sa porosité qui varie de 34 et 43 % suivant la granulométrie des sciures de bois utilisées. Le composite présente un module d'élasticité en traction compris entre 582 à 1 057 MPa, une résistance en traction comprise entre 2 et 3 MPa et un coefficient de Poisson variant de 0,14 à 0,24. World of Warcraft (WoW) is one of the most popular massively multiplayer online games. Previous studies have found evidence of in-game and offline social support among WoW players; however, the interplay of different types of social support such as informational and emotional support among this cohort has not been examined. This study used a reciprocal social support perspective to explore the system-level relationships among different types of social support in a sample of WoW players (N=181). Using network analysis, two major typesof social support, informational and emotional, given and received within WoW and offline systems, were included as model indicators. Social support networks of guild and non-guild members were compared. Clear separation was found between offline and in-game social support. Informational support played a key role in all networks but differences in the social support networks were identified between guild and non-guild members. These findings indicate dynamics between different types of social support overlooked in previous studies. By revealing such dynamics,network analysis has been shown as a promising tool for evidencing the subtledynamics between distinct constructs.

Au Bénin, les déchets issus de la transformation du bois sont très insuffisamment valorisés dans une perspective de réutilisation par l'industrie du bois. Les technologies de transformation de ces produits connexes, économiquement accessibles aux populations des pays en développement, constituent un domaine très peu abordé dans la littérature internationale. Dans le présent travail, un matériau constitué d'un mélange de sciure de bois de teck et de pâte de polystyrène recyclés, suivant une technologie simple à mettre en oeuvre et de type low-tech, a été caractérisé. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les propriétés du composite varient significativement avec la granulométrie de la sciure utilisée. La masse volumique apparente du matériau est comprise entre 686 à 826 kg/m3, son taux d'absorption d'eau est inférieur à 15 % et son taux de gonflement en épaisseur est inférieur à 5 % après 24 heures d'immersion. Une corrélation élevée a été observée entre ses propriétés physiques et sa porosité qui varie de 34 et 43 % suivant la granulométrie des sciures de bois utilisées. Le composite présente un module d'élasticité en traction compris entre 582 à 1 057 MPa, une résistance en traction comprise entre 2 et 3 MPa et un coefficient de Poisson variant de 0,14 à 0,24. BACKGROUND: The Plasmodium vivax Duffy Binding Protein (PvDBP) is a key target of naturally acquired immunity. However, region II of PvDBP, which contains the receptor-binding site, is highly polymorphic. The natural acquisition of antibodies to different variants of PvDBP region II (PvDBPII), including the AH, O, P and Sal1 alleles, the central region III-V (PvDBPIII-V), and P. vivax Erythrocyte Binding Protein region II (PvEBPII) and their associations with risk of clinical P. vivax malaria are not well understood. METHODOLOGY: Total IgG and IgG subclasses 1, 2, and 3 that recognize four alleles of PvDBPII (AH, O, P, and Sal1), PvDBPIII-V and PvEBPII were measured in samples collected from a cohort of 1 to 3 year old Papua New Guinean (PNG) children living in a highly endemic area of PNG. The levels of binding inhibitory antibodies (BIAbs) to PvDBPII (AH, O, and Sal1) were also tested in a subset of children. The association of presence of IgG with age, cumulative exposure (measured as the product of age and malaria infections during follow-up) and prospective risk of clinical malaria were evaluated. RESULTS: The increase in antigen-specific total IgG, IgG1, and IgG3 with age and cumulative exposure was only observed for PvDBPII AH and PvEBPII. High levels of total IgG and predominant subclass IgG3 specific for PvDBPII AH were associated with decreased incidence of clinical P. vivax episodes (aIRR = 0.56-0.68, P≤0.001-0.021). High levels of total IgG and IgG1 to PvEBPII correlated strongly with protection against clinical vivax malaria compared with IgGs against all PvDBPII variants (aIRR = 0.38, P<0.001). Antibodies to PvDBPII AH and PvEBPII showed evidence of an additive effect, with a joint protective association of 70%. CONCLUSION: Antibodies to the key parasite invasion ligands PvDBPII and PvEBPII are good correlates of protection against P. vivax malaria in PNG. This further strengthens the rationale for inclusion of PvDBPII in a recombinant subunit vaccine

Although much progress has been made in mapping the distributions of metal micronutrients throughout the ocean over the last 30 years, there remain information gaps, most notable during seasonal transitions and in remote regions. The next challenge is to develop in situ sensing technologies necessary to capture the spatial and temporal variabilities of micronutrients characterized with short residence times, highly variable source terms, and sub-nanomolar concentrations in open ocean settings. Such an effort will allow investigation of the biogeochemical processes at the necessary resolution to constrain fluxes, residence times, and the biological and chemical responses to varying metal inputs in a changing ocean. Here, we discuss the current state of the art and analytical challenges associated with metal micronutrient determinations and highlight existing and emerging technologies, namely in situ chemical analyzers, electrochemical sensors, passive preconcentration samplers, and autonomous trace metal clean samplers, which could form the basis of autonomous observing systems for trace metals within the next decade. We suggest that several existing assets can already be deployed in regions of enhanced metal concentrations and argue that, upon further development, a combination of wet chemical analyzers with electrochemical sensors may provide the best compromise between analytical precision, detection limits, metal speciation, and longevity for autonomous open ocean determinations. To meet this goal, resources must be invested to: (1) improve the sensitivity of existing sensors including the development of novel chemical assays; (2) reduce sensor size and power requirements; (3) develop an open-source “Do-It-Yourself” infrastructure to facilitate sensor development, uptake by end-users and foster a mechanism by which scientists can

Die Auswirkungen unklarer Eigentumsrechte, extremer Armut, nicht funktionierender Märkte und Institutionen trägt dazu bei, dass natürliche Ressourcen, mit samt den Gemeinschaften, die von ihnen abhängen, dem Risiko der Gemeingüter-Tragik ausgesetzt sind. Gemeinschaftliches Management natürlicher Ressourcen (CBNRM) ist ein Ansatz, der es Gemeinschaften ermöglicht, ihre natürlichen Ressourcen nachhaltig zu nutzen, und damit ökonomische Entwicklung und soziale Gleichheit verbessert. CBNRM erfreut sich immer größerer Beliebtheit in Afrika südlich der Sahara, und sowohl Regierungs- als auch Nichtregierungsorganisationen fördern die Vorteile des Programms. Die wenigen empirischen Studien, die sich mit den ökonomischen und ökologischen Auswirkungen CBNRMs beschäftigen, kommen allerdings zu unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen hinsichtlich positiver oder negativer Programmauswirkungen. Diese Arbeit verfolgt daher einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz. Mit Hilfe einer detaillierten Fallstudie in einem CBNRM Gebiet (das Sikunga Naturschutzgebiet) in der nordöstlichen Sambesi Region Namibias werden drei spezifische Forschungsziele verfolgt. Es geht konkret darum, (1) unterschiedliche Existenzstrategien innerhalb der Gemeinschaft zu identifizieren, die jeweiligen Unterschiede in der Ressourcennutzung zu erkennen, und zu analysieren, wie diese Unterschiede die ökonomische Gleichheit in der Gemeinschaft bedingen, (2) die ökonomischen Verbindungen zwischen den verschiedenen ökologischen und nicht-ökologischen Aktivitäten innerhalb der CBNRM-Wirtschaft zu untersuchen; und (3) zu analysieren, wie individuelle und ökologische Faktoren Kooperation zum Schutz der natürlichen Ressourcen schwächen. However, the impact of poorly defined property rights, extreme levels of poverty, dysfunctional markets and government institutions place the natural resources, and the communities that depend on them, at risk of becoming another tale of the “tragedy of the commons”. Community based natural resource management (CBNRM) was promoted as an approach that would enable communities to sustainably manage their natural resources which would also enhance economic development and economic and social equality. CBRNM has become increasingly popular in sub-Saharan Africa, and governments and NGOs alike continue to promote the perceived benefits of CBNRM programmes. The few extant empirical studies, however, that investigate economic and environmental impacts of CBNRM derive inconsistent conclusions whether CBNRM impacts are positive or negative. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the role of social, natural, physical, human and financial capital in influencing the impact of CBNRMs. This thesis therefore takes a holistic approach by means of a detailed case study on a single CBNRM area (the Sikunga Conservancy) in the north-eastern Zambezi region of Namibia, this thesis focuses on three specific research objectives: (1) to identify the different livelihood strategies within the community, to investigate the extent to which different strategies utilize natural resources, and to analyse how this improves economic equality within the community; (2) to examine the economic linkages between the different environmental and non-environmental activities within the CBNRM-economy; and (3) to investigate how individual and environmental factors may degrade cooperation to protect natural resources. Previous studies have found that playing massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) such as World of Warcraft (WoW) can lead to socializing and enhanced connectedness as well as negative well-being outcomes. Motivations for achievement and socializing play central roles in playing MMOGs. Using data from a survey of 181 WoW players, this study examined the relationship among game identities, motivations for playing WoW, and psychological outcomes. Results from analyses of path models suggested that motivations for achievement and socializing were influenced by game identities. Although these motivations substantially explained the variance in players' sense of WoW community, these factors only explained a small portion of negative psychological well-being. This study attests to the possibility of utilizing identity-based motivations in online game studies to understand psychological outcomes for players.

Deep-sea hydrothermal venting is now recognized as a major source of iron (Fe), an essential trace element that controls marine productivity. However, the reactions occurring during dispersal from buoyant plumes to neutrally buoyant hydrothermal plumes are still poorly constrained. Here we report for the first time on the dissolved-particulate partition of Fe after in situ filtration at the early stage of mixing at different hydrothermal discharges, i.e., Lucky Strike (37 degrees N), TAG (26 degrees N), and Snakepit (23 degrees N) on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We found that hydrothermal iron is almost completely preserved (>90%) in the dissolved fraction, arguing for low iron-bearing sulfide precipitation of iron in basalt-hosted systems with low Fe:H2S ratios. This result can only be explained by a kinetically limited formation of pyrite. The small part of Fe being precipitated as sulfides in the mixing gradient (<10%) is restricted to the inclusion of Fe in minerals of high Cu and Zn content. We also show that secondary venting is a source of Fe-depleted hydrothermal solutions. These results provide new constrains on Fe fluxes from hydrothermal venting.

During 2011, two deep-sea observatories focusing on hydrothermal vent ecology were up and running in the Atlantic (Eiffel Tower, Lucky Strike vent field) and the Northeast Pacific Ocean (NEP) (Grotto, Main Endeavour Field). Both ecological modules recorded imagery and environmental variables jointly for a time span of 23 days (7–30 October 2011) and environmental variables for up to 9 months (October 2011–June 2012). Community dynamics were assessed based on imagery analysis and rhythms in temporal variation for both fauna and environment were revealed. Tidal rhythms were found to be at play in the two settings and were most visible in temperature and tubeworm appearances (at NEP). A ∼ 6 h lag in tidal rhythm occurrence was observed between Pacific and Atlantic hydrothermal vents, which corresponds to the geographical distance and time delay between the two sites.

Soil erosion supplies large quantities of sediments to rivers of Southeastern Asia. It reduces soil fertility of agro-ecosystems located on hillslopes, and it degrades, downstream, water resource quality and leads to the siltation of reservoirs. An increase in the surface area covered with commercial perennial monocultures such as teak plantations is currently observed at the expanse of traditional slash-and-burn cultivation systems in steep montane environments of these regions. The impacts of land-use change on the hydrological response and sediment yields have been investigated in a representative catchment of Laos monitored for 13 years. After the gradual conversion of rice-based shifting cultivation to teak plantation-based systems, overland flow contribution to stream flow increased from 16 to 31% and sediment yield raised from 98 to 609 Mg km−2. This result is explained by the higher kinetic energy of raindrops falling from the canopy, the virtual absence of understorey vegetation cover to dissipate drop energy and the formation of an impermeable surface crust accelerating the formation and concentration of overland flow. The 25-to-50% lower 137Cs activities measured in soils collected under mature teak plantations compared to soils under other land uses illustrate the severity of soil erosion processes occurring in teak plantations.

The study of antigenic targets of naturally-acquired immunity is essential to identify and prioritize antigens for further functional characterization. We measured total IgG antibodies to 38 P. vivax antigens, investigating their relationship with prospective risk of malaria in a cohort of 1-3 years old Papua New Guinean children. Using simulated annealing algorithms, the potential protective efficacy of antibodies to multiple antigen-combinations, and the antibody thresholds associated with protection were investigated for the first time. High antibody levels to multiple known and newly identified proteins were strongly associated with protection (IRR 0.44-0.74, p<0.001-0.041). Among five-antigen combinations with the strongest protective effect (>90%), EBP, DBPII, RBP1a, CyRPA, and PVX_081550 were most frequently identified; several of them requiring very low antibody levels to show a protective association. These data identify individual antigens that should be prioritized for further functional testing and establish a clear path to testing a multicomponent P. vivax vaccine.

The MAlB phases are nanolaminated, ternary transition metal borides that consist of a transition metal boride sublattice interleaved by monolayers or bilayers of pure aluminum. However, their synthesis and properties remain largely unexplored. Herein, we synthesized dense, predominantly single-phase samples of one such compound, MoAlB, using a reactive hot pressing method. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of two Al layers in between a Mo-B sublattice. Unique among the transition metal borides, MoAlB forms a dense, mostly amorphous, alumina scale when heated in air. Like other alumina formers, the oxidation kinetics follow a cubic time-dependence. At room temperature, its resistivity is low (0.36-0.49 mu Omega m) and - like a metal - drops linearly with decreasing temperatures. It is also a good thermal conductor (35 Wm(-1)K(-1) at 26 degrees C). In the 25-1300 degrees C temperature range, its thermal expansion coefficient is 9.5 x 10(-6) K-1. Preliminary results suggest the compound is stable to at least 1400 degrees C in inert atmospheres. Moderately low Vickers hardness values of 10.6 +/- 0.3 GPa, compared to other transition metal borides, and ultimate compressive strengths up to 1940 +/- 103 MPa were measured at room temperature. A study of the temporal dynamics of iron concentrations and temperature on a faunal assemblage at the Lucky Strike vent was performed using the Tempo ecological module at the EMSO-Azores deep-sea observatory. The CHEMINI in situ analyzer was implemented on this structure to determine reactive iron concentrations in unfiltered seawater samples along with a temperature probe. Stability tests were performed on the CHEMINI analyzer before deployment (optical module, hyperbaric tests, and deep-sea calibration) for long-term in situ analysis of reactive iron (six months, 2013–2014) at the Tour Eiffel active edifice. Recorded daily, the in situ standard (25 \mu mol.L {}^{-1} ) showed excellent reproducibility (1.07%, n=522 ), confirming satisfactory analytical performance of the CHEMINI analyzer and thus validating the iron concentrations measured by the instrument. Furthermore, the analyzer proved to be reliable and robust over time. The averaged reactive iron concentration for the six-month period remained low ([Fe] =text{7.12}\pm text{2.11} \mu mol.L {}^{-1} , n=519 ), but showed some noticeable variations with temperature. Reactive iron concentrations and temperature were significantly correlated emphasizing reactive iron stabilization over the time of deployment. Period spectra indicated strong tidal influence and relevant frequencies of four to five days for both variables.
