Neuroaxonal dystrophy (NAD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by spheroid (swollen axon) formation in the nervous system. In the present study, we focused on a newly established autosomal recessive mutant strain of F344-kk/kk rats with hind limb gait abnormalities and ataxia from a young age. Histopathologically, a number of axonal spheroids were observed throughout the central nervous system, including the spinal cord (mainly in the dorsal cord), brain stem, and cerebellum in F344-kk/kk rats. Transmission electron microscopic observation of the spinal cord revealed accumulation of electron-dense bodies, degenerated abnormal mitochondria, as well as membranous or tubular structures in the axonal spheroids. Based on these neuropathological findings, F344-kk/kk rats were diagnosed with NAD. By a positional cloning approach, we identified a missense mutation (V95E) in the Hspa8 (heat shock protein family A (Hsp70) member 8) gene located on chromosome 8 of the F344-kk/kk rat genome. Furthermore, we developed the Hspa8 knock-in (KI) rats with the V95E mutation using the CRISPR-Cas system. Homozygous Hspa8-KI rats exhibited ataxia and axonal spheroids similar to those of F344-kk/kk rats. The V95E mutant HSC70 protein exhibited the significant but modest decrease in the maximum hydrolysis rate of ATPase when stimulated by co-chaperons DnaJB4 and BAG1 in vitro, which suggests the functional deficit in the V95E HSC70. Together, our findings provide the first evidence that the genetic alteration of the Hspa8 gene caused NAD in mammals.

Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are often caused by repetitive lifting, making them a significant concern in occupational health. Although wearable assist devices have become the norm for mitigating the risk of back pain, most spinal assist devices still possess a partially rigid structure that impacts the user comfort and flexibility. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a smart textile actuated spine assistance robotic exosuit (SARE), which can conform to the back seamlessly without impeding the user movement and is incredibly lightweight. The SARE can assist the human erector spinae to complete any action with virtually infinite degrees of freedom. To detect the strain on the spine and to control the smart textile automatically, a soft knitting sensor which utilizes fluid pressure as sensing element is used. The new device is validated experimentally with human subjects where it reduces peak electromyography (EMG) signals of lumbar erector spinae by around 32 percent in loaded and around 22 percent in unloaded conditions. Moreover, the integrated EMG decreased by around 24.2 percent under loaded condition and around 23.6 percent under unloaded condition. Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPMs) are powerful generative models showing competitive performance in various domains, including image synthesis and 3D point cloud generation. However, sampling from pre-trained DPMs involves multiple neural function evaluations (NFE) to transform Gaussian noise samples into images, resulting in higher computational costs compared to single-step generative models such as GANs or VAEs. Therefore, a crucial problem is to reduce NFE while preserving generation quality. To this end, we propose LD3, a lightweight framework for learning time discretization while sampling from the diffusion ODE encapsulated by DPMs. LD3 can be combined with various diffusion ODE solvers and consistently improves performance without retraining resource-intensive neural networks. We demonstrate analytically and empirically that LD3 enhances sampling efficiency compared to distillation-based methods, without the extensive computational overhead. We evaluate our method with extensive experiments on 5 datasets, covering unconditional and conditional sampling in both pixel-space and latent-space DPMs. For example, in about 5 minutes of training on a single GPU, our method reduces the FID score from 6.63 to 2.68 on CIFAR10 (7 NFE), and in around 20 minutes, decreases the FID from 8.51 to 5.03 on class-conditional ImageNet-256 (5 NFE). LD3 complements distillation methods, offering a more efficient approach to sampling from pre-trained diffusion models.

Splitting methods are a widely used numerical scheme for solving convection-diffusion problems. However, they may lose stability in some situations, particularly when applied to convection-diffusion problems in the presence of an unbounded convective term. In this paper, we propose a new splitting method, called the "Adapted Lie splitting method", which successfully overcomes the observed instability in certain cases. Assuming that the unbounded coefficient belongs to a suitable Lorentz space, we show that the adapted Lie splitting converges to first-order under the analytic semigroup framework. This paper presents the NOWJ team's approach to the COLIEE 2023 Competition, which focuses on advancing legal information processing techniques and applying them to real-world legal scenarios. Our team tackles the four tasks in the competition, which involve legal case retrieval, legal case entailment, statute law retrieval, and legal textual entailment. We employ state-of-the-art machine learning models and innovative approaches, such as BERT, Longformer, BM25-ranking algorithm, and multi-task learning models. Although our team did not achieve state-of-the-art results, our findings provide valuable insights and pave the way for future improvements in legal information processing., Comment: COLIEE 2023

Multi-document summarization is challenging because the summaries should not only describe the most important information from all documents but also provide a coherent interpretation of the documents. This paper proposes a method for multi-document summarization based on cluster similarity. In the extractive method we use hybrid model based on a modified version of the PageRank algorithm and a text correlation considerations mechanism. After generating summaries by selecting the most important sentences from each cluster, we apply BARTpho and ViT5 to construct the abstractive models. Both extractive and abstractive approaches were considered in this study. Facilitating large-scale, cross-institutional collaboration in biomedical machine learning projects requires a trustworthy and resilient federated learning (FL) environment to ensure that sensitive information such as protected health information is kept confidential. In this work, we introduce APPFLx, a low-code FL framework that enables the easy setup, configuration, and running of FL experiments across organizational and administrative boundaries while providing secure end-to-end communication, privacy-preserving functionality, and identity management. APPFLx is completely agnostic to the underlying computational infrastructure of participating clients. We demonstrate the capability of APPFLx as an easy-to-use framework for accelerating biomedical studies across institutions and healthcare systems while maintaining the protection of private medical data in two case studies: (1) predicting participant age from electrocardiogram (ECG) waveforms, and (2) detecting COVID-19 disease from chest radiographs. These experiments were performed securely across heterogeneous compute resources, including a mixture of on-premise high-performance computing and cloud computing, and highlight the role of federated learning in improving model generalizability and performance when aggregating data from multiple healthcare systems. Finally, we demonstrate that APPFLx serves as a convenient and easy-to-use framework for accelerating biomedical studies across institutions and healthcare system while maintaining the protection of private medical data.

Despite the promising performance of current 3D human pose estimation techniques, understanding and enhancing their generalization on challenging in-the-wild videos remain an open problem. In this work, we focus on the robustness of 2D-to-3D pose lifters. To this end, we develop two benchmark datasets, namely Human3.6M-C and HumanEva-I-C, to examine the robustness of video-based 3D pose lifters to a wide range of common video corruptions including temporary occlusion, motion blur, and pixel-level noise. We observe the poor generalization of state-of-the-art 3D pose lifters in the presence of corruption and establish two techniques to tackle this issue. First, we introduce Temporal Additive Gaussian Noise (TAGN) as a simple yet effective 2D input pose data augmentation. Additionally, to incorporate the confidence scores output by the 2D pose detectors, we design a confidence-aware convolution (CA-Conv) block. Extensively tested on corrupted videos, the proposed strategies consistently boost the robustness of 3D pose lifters and serve as new baselines for future research.

Current test-time adaptation (TTA) approaches aim to adapt to environments that change continuously. Yet, when the environments not only change but also recur in a correlated manner over time, such as in the case of day-night surveillance cameras, it is unclear whether the adaptability of these methods is sustained after a long run. This study aims to examine the error accumulation of TTA models when they are repeatedly exposed to previous testing environments, proposing a novel testing setting called episodic TTA. To study this phenomenon, we design a simulation of TTA process on a simple yet representative $\epsilon$-perturbed Gaussian Mixture Model Classifier and derive the theoretical findings revealing the dataset- and algorithm-dependent factors that contribute to the gradual degeneration of TTA methods through time. Our investigation has led us to propose a method, named persistent TTA (PeTTA). PeTTA senses the model divergence towards a collapsing and adjusts the adaptation strategy of TTA, striking a balance between two primary objectives: adaptation and preventing model collapse. The stability of PeTTA in the face of episodic TTA scenarios has been demonstrated through a set of comprehensive experiments on various benchmarks.

This paper presents a knowledge graph construction method for legal case documents and related laws, aiming to organize legal information efficiently and enhance various downstream tasks. Our approach consists of three main steps: data crawling, information extraction, and knowledge graph deployment. First, the data crawler collects a large corpus of legal case documents and related laws from various sources, providing a rich database for further processing. Next, the information extraction step employs natural language processing techniques to extract entities such as courts, cases, domains, and laws, as well as their relationships from the unstructured text. Finally, the knowledge graph is deployed, connecting these entities based on their extracted relationships, creating a heterogeneous graph that effectively represents legal information and caters to users such as lawyers, judges, and scholars. The established baseline model leverages unsupervised learning methods, and by incorporating the knowledge graph, it demonstrates the ability to identify relevant laws for a given legal case. In recent years, natural language processing has gained significant popularity in various sectors, including the legal domain. This paper presents NeCo Team's solutions to the Vietnamese text processing tasks provided in the Automated Legal Question Answering Competition 2023 (ALQAC 2023), focusing on legal domain knowledge acquisition for low-resource languages through data enrichment. Our methods for the legal document retrieval task employ a combination of similarity ranking and deep learning models, while for the second task, which requires extracting an answer from a relevant legal article in response to a question, we propose a range of adaptive techniques to handle different question types. Our approaches achieve outstanding results on both tasks of the competition, demonstrating the potential benefits and effectiveness of question answering systems in the legal field, particularly for low-resource languages., Comment: ISAILD@KSE 2023

Cross-silo privacy-preserving federated learning (PPFL) is a powerful tool to collaboratively train robust and generalized machine learning (ML) models without sharing sensitive (e.g., healthcare of financial) local data. To ease and accelerate the adoption of PPFL, we introduce APPFLx, a ready-to-use platform that provides privacy-preserving cross-silo federated learning as a service. APPFLx employs Globus authentication to allow users to easily and securely invite trustworthy collaborators for PPFL, implements several synchronous and asynchronous FL algorithms, streamlines the FL experiment launch process, and enables tracking and visualizing the life cycle of FL experiments, allowing domain experts and ML practitioners to easily orchestrate and evaluate cross-silo FL under one platform. This study uses the Vietnam Living Standards Households Survey 2018 to document the relationship between birthplace diversity and child welfare in Vietnam. To address the endogeneity issue of birthplace diversity, we construct an instrumental variable. The endogeneity-corrected estimates show that a 1 percent increase in birthplace diversity significantly increases education expenditure per capita for children aged 2 to 18 by 0.9 percent and health expenditure for children aged 6 to 11 by 0.5 percent. We document an income channel through which birthplace diversity affects child welfare. Our instrumental variable estimation provides consistent results when we use an alternative instrumental variable. Our findings suggest that promoting migration is likely to be an effective way of enhancing the welfare of children and increasing economic prosperity.

The ability to use digitally recorded and quantified neurological exam information is important to help healthcare systems deliver better care, in-person and via telehealth, as they compensate for a growing shortage of neurologists. Current neurological digital biomarker pipelines, however, are narrowed down to a specific neurological exam component or applied for assessing specific conditions. In this paper, we propose an accessible vision-based exam and documentation solution called Digitized Neurological Examination (DNE) to expand exam biomarker recording options and clinical applications using a smartphone/tablet. Through our DNE software, healthcare providers in clinical settings and people at home are enabled to video capture an examination while performing instructed neurological tests, including finger tapping, finger to finger, forearm roll, and stand-up and walk. Our modular design of the DNE software supports integrations of additional tests. The DNE extracts from the recorded examinations the 2D/3D human-body pose and quantifies kinematic and spatio-temporal features. The features are clinically relevant and allow clinicians to document and observe the quantified movements and the changes of these metrics over time. A web server and a user interface for recordings viewing and feature visualizations are available. DNE was evaluated on a collected dataset of 21 subjects containing normal and simulated-impaired movements. The overall accuracy of DNE is demonstrated by classifying the recorded movements using various machine learning models. Our tests show an accuracy beyond 90% for upper-limb tests and 80% for the stand-up and walk tests.

Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) are causing high morbidity and mortality for humans. Urban livestock keeping is still common in cities around the world. The animals may serve as reservoirs for zoonotic MBDs, which increase the risks for humans. Here we assess the knowledge and practices related to MBDs in households with livestock and without livestock and explore the perceptions of the health care sector about MBDs and livestock keeping in Hanoi city of Vietnam in a cross-sectional study. A quantitative survey was conducted including 513 households with and without livestock-keeping in six districts and complemented with qualitative surveys with four health staff from Hanoi Center of Disease Control and three district health centers. The quantitative survey indicated that the participants possessed basic knowledge on MBDs with an average score of 18.3 out of 35, of which non-livestock-keeping households had a better knowledge than households keeping livestock (p<0.05). Both household categories had low score, 3.5 out of 11, regarding preventive practices against MBDs. The negative binomial model showed that occupation and location of living were factors associated to the knowledge on MBDs. Farmers were likely to have better preventive practices as compared to office workers (p<0.05). Those who had better knowledge also had more adequate preventive practices against MBDs (p<0.001). The qualitative survey revealed that livestock keeping was determined as increasing risks of MBDs due to the increase of mosquito population. It is recommended that community campaigns to raise the awareness and change behavior on MBDs should be organized based on collaboration between the health sector and the veterinary sector for households with and without livestock living in central urban and peri-urban areas. Further studies are needed to confirm the association between urban livestock keeping and potential increasing risks of MBDs such as dengue and Japanese encephalitis.

This study investigates the impact of natural disasters on womenʼs empowerment in rural Vietnam. Using Vietnam Access to Resources Household Surveys 2008 and 2010, we find strong evidence on the impact of natural disasters on womenʼs empowerment. Non-parametric methods also corroborate this finding. Our estimates are strong for different model specifications and different measures of womenʼs empowerment. We also discuss channels through which natural disasters affect womenʼs empowerment. In an agrarian society, men have an advantage in agricultural activities relative to women, therefore women have less power within households compared with men. Our empirical results show that higher number of natural disasters results in a reduction in agricultural income. This decreases menʼs power relative to womenʼs power within households. The impact of number of natural disasters on womenʼs empowerment is statistically insignificant for households with lower shares of farm income while it is statistically significant for households with higher shares of farm income. Leveraging a test of exogeneity by Caetano (2015), we document the causal relationship between natural disasters and womenʼs empowerment.

A new control approach is proposed for the grid insertion of Power Park Modules (PPMs). It allows full participation of these modules to ancillary services. This means that, not only their control have some positive impact on the grid frequency and voltage dynamics, but they can effectively participate to existing primary and secondary control loops together with the classic thermal/inertia synchronous generators and fulfill the same specifications both from the control and contractual points of view. To achieve such level of performances, a system approach based on an innovatory control model is proposed. The latter control model drops classic hypothesis for separation of voltage and frequency dynamics used till now in order to gather these dynamics into a small size model. From the system point of view, dynamics are grouped by time-scales of phenomena in the proposed control model. This results in more performant controls in comparison to classic approaches which orient controls to physical actuators (control of grid side converter and of generator side converter). Also, this allows coordination between control of converters and generator or, in case of multimachines specifications, among several PPMs. From the control synthesis point of view, classic robust approaches are used (like, e.g., H-infinity synthesis). Implementation and validation tests are presented for wind PPMs but the approach holds for any other type of PPM. These results will be further used to control the units of the new concept of Dynamic Virtual Power Plant introduced in the H2020 POSYTYF project.

Подчеркивается, что профилактика распространения COVID-19 в столице Вьетнама в значительной степени зависит от сознания жителей, в том числе студентов, учащихся в университетах в Ханое. Цель исследования – выяснить характеристики реакции студентов в Ханое перед пандемией COVID-19 в трех аспектах: осознание, эмоции и действие. Методы. Для проведения исследования были использованы следующие методы: метод опроса для определения характеристик борьбы студентов с эпидемией COVID-19. Было опрошено 395 студентов университетов, расположенных в Ханое, включая Академию национального управления образованием; Ханойский университет социальных и гуманитарных наук; Ханойский политехнический университет; Ханойский государственный педагогический университет. Результаты опроса перечислены с использованием статистической программы SPSS. Результаты исследований показывают, что студенты университетов Ханоя имеют необходимые познания, относительно адекватную реакцию при возникших болезненных состояниях, выраженную в когнитивном, эмоциональном и поведенческом аспектах. Кроме того, у некоторых студентов все еще есть субъективные проявления, такие как чрезмерное беспокойство и негативные реакции. Результаты исследования указывают на важные психологические аспекты, способствуют накоплению значимого опыта для разработки эффективных стратегий профилактики и борьбы с COVID-19 и эпидемиями, подобными COVID-19, в будущем., The article is devoted to the consideration of COVID-19 that is a dangerous pandemic in the world, broke out in late December 2019 in Wuhan, China. It is outlined that the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 greatly depends on the consciousness of population, including students studying in Universities in Hanoi. The aim of the study is to find out the characteristics of students’ reaction in Hanoi to the COVID-19 pandemic in three aspects: awareness, emotions and action. Methods. During the study the following methods were used: a survey method to determine the characteristics of students' copping with COVID-19. 395 University students were interviewed. Among them students studying at the National Academy for Educational Management; University of Social Sciences and Humanities; Hanoi Polytechnic University; Hanoi State Pedagogical University. The survey results are listed using the SPSS statistical program. The research results show that the students of universities in Hanoi have a proper awareness, appropriate response in disease conditions, expressed in cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects. Besides, some students still have subjective expressions, excessive anxiety and negative response behaviors. The results of study show important psychological bases, establish meaningful experiences to develop effective prevention and control copping strategies for COVID-19 and the pandemics like COVID-19 in future.

Few studies have evaluated the association of serum β2-M with clinical outcome in hemodialysis patients using high-flux type. However, study on patients using low-flux dialyzer reuse has not been done yet.Patients and methods: Using serum β2-M level on predicting long-term mortality of hemodialysis patients was examined in 326 prevalent hemodialysis patients (45.59±14.46 years, hemodialysis duration of 47.5 (26–79) months, 186 males and 140 females). The patients were divided into 3 groups with equal number of patients, according to their serum β2-M levels: group A (n=109, serum β2-M concentration ≤55.7 mg/L), group B (n=109, serum β2-M level from 55.8 mg/L to 75.4 mg/L) and group C (n=108, serum β2-M concentration >75.4 mg/L).Results: During the follow-up period of 5 years, there were 75 all-cause deaths (23.0%). Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that all-cause mortality in the higher β2-M group was significantly higher compared to that in the lower β2-M groups (p<0.001). L'efficacité des processus de phytoremédiation a été largement démontrée par des applications individuelles sur le sol et les sédiments. Cette thèse a pour objectif de démontrer la participation d'une population d'invertébrés dans l'efficacité de la réduction de polluants des sédiments aquatiques en combinant le processus de bioturbation avec la phytoremédiation. Les hypotheses de recherche ont été testée expérimentalement en conditions de laboratoire à l'aide d'une série de microcosmes reproduisant chacun une portion d'interface eau/ sédiments similaire aux conditions en zones humides. Dans nos expériences, la bioturbation est réalisée par une population d'oligochètes Tubificidae bien connue comme un ingénieur écologique. La phytoremédiation associée est effectuée par une plante aquatique Typha latifolia connue pour sa capacité à extraire les polluants organiques et inorganiques des sédiments par l'accumulation dans leur biomasse. Algae provide an important role in aquatic food web and biochemical cycles in aquatic systems. They are affected by different environmental factors, such as pH, light, temperature and nutrients. This study aimed to describe the composition abundance and density of phytoplankton in the Hoa Binh reservoir during period from March to December 2011. Phytoplankton samples were collected monthly at four sampling stations. Result obtained showed that 6 phytoplankton classes were recorded: Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Dinophyceae and Cryptophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanobacteria were the most abundant phytoplankton families constituting 61% and 32% respectively of total phytoplankton community. Colony-forming and solitary filamentous-forming of Cyanobacteria group (e.g. Microcystis aeruginosa, M. wesenbergi and Oscillatoria sp. respectively) were a common component of phytoplankton community in the early summer and autumn periods (April and September). The total cell densities of phytoplankton varied seasonally from 84210 to 100x106 cell/L.
