Autonomous car racing is a major challenge in robotics. It raises fundamental problems for classical approaches such as planning minimum-time trajectories under uncertain dynamics and controlling the car at the limits of its handling. Besides, the requirement of minimizing the lap time, which is a sparse objective, and the difficulty of collecting training data from human experts have also hindered researchers from directly applying learning-based approaches to solve the problem. In the present work, we propose a learning-based system for autonomous car racing by leveraging a high-fidelity physical car simulation, a course-progress proxy reward, and deep reinforcement learning. We deploy our system in Gran Turismo Sport, a world-leading car simulator known for its realistic physics simulation of different race cars and tracks, which is even used to recruit human race car drivers. Our trained policy achieves autonomous racing performance that goes beyond what had been achieved so far by the built-in AI, and at the same time, outperforms the fastest driver in a dataset of over 50,000 human players.

The respiratory Influenza A Viruses (IAVs) and emerging zoonotic viruses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pose a significant threat to human health. To accelerate our understanding of the host–pathogen response to respiratory viruses, the use of more complex in vitro systems such as normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cell culture models has gained prominence as an alternative to animal models. NHBE cells were differentiated under air-liquid interface (ALI) conditions to form an in vitro pseudostratified epithelium. The responses of well-differentiated (wd) NHBE cells were examined following infection with the 2009 pandemic Influenza A/H1N1pdm09 strain or following challenge with the dsRNA mimic, poly(I:C). At 30 h postinfection with H1N1pdm09, the integrity of the airway epithelium was severely impaired and apical junction complex damage was exhibited by the disassembly of zona occludens-1 (ZO-1) from the cell cytoskeleton. wdNHBE cells produced an innate immune response to IAV-infection with increased transcription of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and the antiviral viperin but reduced expression of the mucin-encoding MUC5B, which may impair mucociliary clearance. Poly(I:C) produced similar responses to IAV, with the exception of MUC5B expression which was more than 3-fold higher than for control cells. This study demonstrates that wdNHBE cells are an appropriate ex-vivo model system to investigate the pathogenesis of respiratory viruses.

Several Avian paramyxoviruses 1 (synonymous with Newcastle disease virus or NDV, used hereafter) classification systems have been proposed for strain identification and differentiation. These systems pioneered classification efforts; however, they were based on different approaches and lacked objective criteria for the differentiation of isolates. These differences have created discrepancies among systems, rendering discussions and comparisons across studies difficult. Although a system that used objective classification criteria was proposed by Diel and co-workers in 2012, the ample worldwide circulation and constant evolution of NDV, and utilization of only some of the criteria, led to identical naming and/or incorrect assigning of new sub/genotypes. To address these issues, an international consortium of experts was convened to undertake in-depth analyses of NDV genetic diversity. This consortium generated curated, up-to-date, complete fusion gene class I and class II datasets of all known NDV for public use, performed comprehensive phylogenetic neighbor-Joining, maximum-likelihood, Bayesian and nucleotide distance analyses, and compared these inference methods. An updated NDV classification and nomenclature system that incorporates phylogenetic topology, genetic distances, branch support, and epidemiological independence was developed. This new consensus system maintains two NDV classes and existing genotypes, identifies three new class II genotypes, and reduces the number of sub-genotypes. In order to track the ancestry of viruses, a dichotomous naming system for designating sub-genotypes was introduced. In addition, a pilot dataset and sub-trees rooting guidelines for rapid preliminary genotype identification of new isolates are provided. Guidelines for sequence dataset curation and phylogenetic inference, and a detailed comparison between the updated and previous systems are included. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an acute, highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild cloven-hoofed animals, caused by FMD virus (FMDV). An FMD outbreak can cause major production losses and have significant implications for trade. Vaccination can assist in controlling the disease, and emergency vaccination using high antigen payload vaccines (>6 PD50/dose) is considered an important control approach in the event of an outbreak. In recent years there has been a divergence of serotype A viruses in South East Asia (SEA) into several distinct genetic and antigenic clusters. Numerous variants were found to poorly match serotype A vaccines commonly included in international antigen banks. This study examined the ability of single vaccination with high-potency monovalent A22 IRQ vaccine to protect sheep following challenge with the A/VIT/15/2012 strain, just four days following vaccination. The vaccine proved effective at limiting clinical disease but did not prevent infection.

The emergence of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza has caused a heavy socio-economic burden through culling of poultry to minimise human and livestock infection. Although human infections with H5N1 have to date been limited, concerns for the pandemic potential of this zoonotic virus have been greatly intensified following experimental evidence of aerosol transmission of H5N1 viruses in a mammalian infection model. In this review, we discuss the dominance of the haemagglutinin cleavage site motif as a pathogenicity determinant, the host-pathogen molecular interactions driving cleavage activation, reverse genetics manipulations and identification of residues key to haemagglutinin cleavage site functionality and the mechanisms of cell and tissue damage during H5N1 infection. We specifically focus on the disease in chickens, as it is in this species that high pathogenicity frequently evolves and from which transmission to the human population occurs. With >75% of emerging infectious diseases being of zoonotic origin, it is necessary to understand pathogenesis in the primary host to explain spillover events into the human population.

La Universidad Nacional Agraria, institución que promueven el desarrollo y fortalecimiento de la sociedad nicaragüense, en el campo Agropecuario y forestal, ponen en manos de la sociedad nicaragüense el Manual de plantas tóxicas para el ganado en Nicaragua, el cual brinda información sobre aquellas plantas que se encuentran asociadas a los pastizales nicaragüenses y que se constituyen en problemas potenciales cuando son ingeridas por los animales de la finca. La información que se presenta en la guía, es fruto de la experiencia desarrollada por los doctores, Freddy Alemán, profesor investigador de la Universidad Nacional Agraria, especialista en manejo de arvenses, y el médico veterinario Dr. Peter Durr. Además, se revisó información sobre problemas que enfrentan productores y productoras con la flora arvense y ruderal en la producción pecuaria nicaragüense. La obra ofrece un aporte a técnicos pecuarios que brindan asistencia técnica en el campo, así como a personas interesadas en conocer más acerca de la identificación de las plantas adventicias que están asociadas a los pastizales nicaragüenses, y aquellas plantas que crecen en los lugares aledaños al mismo. El objetivo de la serie GUÍAS TÉCNICAS es apoyar a productores, técnicos y estudiantes en la toma de decisiones sobre la producción de los cultivos, la producción forestal, el manejo pecuario y los procesos agroindustriales que den mayor competitividad al sector agropecuario y forestal. De igual forma, contribuir al manejo integral de las fincas, desde una perspectiva agro ecológica. La publicación de las GUÍAS TÉCNICAS, se constituye en una de las estrategias con las que cuenta la UNA para la difusión de su quehacer universitario.
