L’anàlisi permet donar dades sobre migració, edat d’accés al primer matrimoni, estacionalitat de les celebracions nupcials, estratificació social i il·legitimitat., This paper focuses on the marriage settlements, a historical source slightly used in medieval period, and it proposes a methodology used to obtain social and economic data from the spouses and their future statistical analysis. This methodology is applied to approximately 450 marriage settlements located in the documentation of the notary Bernat Montserrat (1431-1465). This analysis provides data about migration, age of first marriage, seasonality of wedding celebrations, social stratification and illegitimacy.

In recent years, demand for scintillation detectors with high time resolution (better than 100 ps) has emerged in high-energy physics and medical imaging applications. In particular, time of flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) can greatly benefit from increasing time resolution of scintillators, which leads to the increase of signal-to-noise ratio, decrease of patient dose, and achievement of the superior spatial resolution of PET images. Currently, extensive research of various types of materials is carried out to achieve the best time resolution. In this review, the recent progress of various approaches is summarized and scintillation compounds with the best temporal characteristics are first reviewed. The review presents the physical processes causing fast luminescence in inorganic and organic materials. Special attention is paid to nanocomposites which belong to a new perspective class of scintillating materials, consisting of a plastic matrix, inorganic nanocrystalline fillers, and organic or inorganic luminescence activators and shifters. The main features and functions of all parts of existing and prospective nanocomposite scintillators are also discussed. A number of currently created and investigated nanocomposite materials with various compounds and structures are reviewed. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Here, we introduce Co-Fe nanovolcanoes-nanodisks overlaid by nanorings-as purpose-engineered 3D architectures for nanomagnonics, fabricated by focused electron beam-induced deposition. We use both perpendicular spin-wave resonance measurements and micromagnetic simulations to demonstrate that the rings encircling the volcano craters harbor the highest-frequency eigenmodes, while the lower-frequency eigenmodes are concentrated within the volcano crater, due to the non-uniformity of the internal magnetic field. By varying the crater diameter, we demonstrate the deliberate tuning of higher-frequency eigenmodes without affecting the lowest-frequency mode. Thereby, the extension of 2D nanodisks into the third dimension allows one to engineer their lowest eigenfrequency by using 3D nanovolcanoes with 30% smaller footprints. The presented nanovolcanoes can be viewed as multi-mode microwave resonators and 3D building blocks for nanomagnonics.

Since the introduction of the first offshore wind farm in 1991, the demand for offshore renewable wind energy has experienced exponential growth all around the world. To supply this demand, the power rating and corresponding dimensions of offshore wind turbines have grown significantly. Due to the ever-shrinking availability of easily accessible shallow water sites and the abundance of high quality wind resources in deeper water, the industry is stimulated to come up with innovative, yet cost effective, solutions to tap into these deep water sites. Historically, the use of monopile foundations has been an important facilitator of cost reduction due to its relative ease of manufacturability, transportability and installability. Monopile foundations have, however, thus far only been used in relatively shallow water depths. With jacket-type and floating support structures remaining relatively costly, the question arises if the monopile could yet be scaled up further to be used in water depths beyond the current 40-60mfor future, 10+ MW wind turbines. The goal of this research is to investigate the technical feasibility of monopile foundations in the water depth ’gap’ of 60 to 120 meters, which is currently claimed by jackets, for large wind turbines and determine critical design parameters for up-scaling monopiles to these depths. With an eye on future developments a 15 MW reference turbine is adopted and to make the research widely applicable the Hywind Scotland site in the Northern North Sea is selected, a well-documented reference site with a very severe wind and wave climate. To define monopile designs, a parametric (static) monopile geometry optimization tool is developed in Excel, which transfers the environmental data to forcing components. The monopile geometry is optimized for first natural frequency and ULS resistance (yield and global buckling) by varying the outer diameter and wall thickness along the structure. The offshore wind industry in Europe has experienced significant growth in the past decade, with wind farm development mostly focusing on the shallow area's in the North Sea. Naturally, the market is driven to reduce the Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCoE) to become more competitive with fossil fuels and less dependent on government subsidies. A transition in wind farm development towards deeper waters is expected and already observed in the market, driven by decreasing availability of shallow area's and higher wind resource at far offshore locations. The majority of the northern part of the North Sea is between 60 - 120 meter deep, currently the jacket foundation is deemed as the foundation of choice for this water depth range. Despite several technological advantages of the jacket, the main downsides are the large engineering effort and welds required to produce such a foundation resulting in difficult series production and high costs. This does not align with the industry's ambition to lower the LCoE. As such, the need for a technologically viable and economically attractive foundation concept for waters between 60 - 120 meter deep arises. The goal of this research can be divided in to two parts. The first part is to determine the potential of conventional monopiles in this water range and identify the main limiting factors. To do so, a monopile is dimensioned at a selected reference location for three turbines representing the current, near future and future outlook of the market. The designed monopiles are tested for manufacturabiliy, Ultimate Limit State (ULS) and Fatigue Limit State (FLS) to identify the technical showstoppers. Next, in the second part, a novel monopile design is introduced and analysed to work around the identified limits. To dimension the monopiles for the three reference turbines a parametric dimensioning script is developed. Este trabajo presenta las dotes como la fuente que permite percibir los niveles de riqueza y de desigualdades económicas entre el artesanado barcelonés de época moderna. Partiendo del análisis de casi ciento sesenta capitulaciones matrimoniales (1501-1777), con la participación de diferentes oficios, realizamos una propuesta de categorización de los sectores productivos. Analizamos principalmente el grupo de alfareros, tomándolos como ejemplo para exponer la evolución de las cuantías dotales y su categorización social. A través de los diferentes oficios de este grupo productivo se podrán evidenciar las desigualdades internas en lo que se refiere a riqueza y a poder adquisitivo., Aquest treball presenta els dots com a font que permet escatir els nivells de riquesa i de desigualtats econòmiques entre l’artesanat barceloní d’època moderna. Partint de l’anàlisi de gairebé 160 capítols matrimonials (1501-1777), amb participació de diferents oficis, realitzem una proposta de categorització dels sectors socioproductius. To do this, starting from the analysis of almost 160 prenuptial agreements (1501– 1777), with the participation of different trades, a proposal is made for the categorization of unions. The main analysis looks at the potters’ guild, taking it as an example to explain the evolution of dowry amounts and their social categorization. Internal inequalities in terms of wealth and purchasing power can be shown through the different crafts of this guild.

In magnetic resonance imaging, the application of a strong diffusion weighting suppresses the signal contributions from the less diffusion-restricted constituents of the brain's white matter, thus enabling the estimation of the transverse relaxation time T2 that arises from the more diffusion-restricted constituents such as the axons. However, the presence of cell nuclei and vacuoles can confound the estimation of the axonal T2, as diffusion within those structures is also restricted, causing the corresponding signal to survive the strong diffusion weighting. We devise an estimator of the axonal T2 based on the directional spherical variance of the strongly diffusion-weighted signal. The spherical variance T2 estimates are insensitive to the presence of isotropic contributions to the signal like those provided by cell nuclei and vacuoles. We show that with a strong diffusion weighting these estimates differ from those obtained using the directional spherical mean of the signal which contains both axonal and isotropically-restricted contributions. Our findings hint at the presence of an MRI-visible isotropically-restricted contribution to the signal in the white matter ex vivo fixed tissue (monkey) at 7T, and do not allow us to discard such a possibility also for in vivo human data collected with a clinical 3T system.

BackgroundMobile health (mHealth) interventions have the potential to improve health through patient education and provider engagement while increasing efficiency and lowering costs. This raises the question of whether disparities in access to mobile technology could accentuate disparities in mHealth mediated care. This study addresses whether programs planning to implement mHealth interventions risk creating or perpetuating health disparities based on inequalities in smartphone ownership.MethodsVideo Directly Observed Therapy (VDOT) is an mHealth intervention for monitoring tuberculosis (TB) treatment adherence through videos sent by patients to their healthcare provider using smartphones. We conducted secondary analyses of data from a single-arm trial of VDOT for TB treatment monitoring by San Diego, San Francisco, and New York City health departments. Baseline and follow-up treatment interviews were used to assess participant smartphone ownership, sociodemographics and TB treatment perceptions. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify correlates of smartphone ownership.ResultsOf the 151 participants enrolled, mean age was 41 years (range: 18-87 years) and 41.1% were female. Participants mostly identified as Asian (45.0%) or Hispanic/Latino (29.8%); 57.8% had at most a high school education. At baseline, 30.4% did not own a smartphone, which was similar across sites. Older participants (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.09 per year, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05-1.12), males (AOR = 2.86, 95% CI: 1.04-7.86), participants having at most a high school education (AOR = 4.48, 95% CI: 1.57-12.80), and those with an annual income below $10,000 (AOR = 3.06, 95% CI: 1.19, 7.89) had higher odds of not owning a smartphone.ConclusionsApproximately one-third of TB patients in three large United States of America (USA) cities lacked smartphones prior to the study. The metatheory of Scala's core type system - the Dependent Object Types (DOT) calculus - is hard to extend, like the metatheory of other type systems combining subtyping and dependent types. Soundness of important Scala features therefore remains an open problem in theory and in practice. To address some of these problems, we use a semantics-first approach to develop a logical relations model for a new version of DOT, called guarded DOT (gDOT). Our logical relations model makes use of an abstract form of step-indexing, as supported by the Iris framework, to model various forms of recursion in gDOT. To demonstrate the expressiveness of gDOT, we show that it handles Scala examples that could not be handled by previous versions of DOT, and prove using our logical relations model that gDOT provides the desired data abstraction. The gDOT type system, its semantic model, its soundness proofs, and all examples in the paper have been mechanized in Coq., Programming Languages

The type of research applied is quantitative by using path analysis. The data used to model the development of transportation infrastructure and the spatial structure with the concept of TOD. From the model obtained by Banda Aceh city which is a region of homogeneous region type is characterized by the existence of the relative similarity in the region and has not yet characterized the layout with the transit oriented development (TOD) concept, El objetivo del estudio es analizar el desarrollo de la infraestructura de transporte en la ciudad de Banda Aceh, Indonesia, utilizando el concepto de Desarrollo Orientado al Transporte (DOT). El tipo de investigación aplicada es cuantitativa mediante el uso de análisis de ruta. Los datos utilizados para modelar el desarrollo de la infraestructura de transporte y la estructura espacial con el concepto de DOT. Del modelo obtenido por la ciudad de Banda Aceh, que es una región de tipo homogéneo, se caracteriza por la existencia de similitudes relativas en la región y aún no ha caracterizado el diseño con el concepto de desarrollo orientado al tránsito (TOD).

Nonlinear parametric inverse problems appear in many applications in science and engineering. We focus on diffuse optical tomography (DOT) in medical imaging. DOT aims to recover an unknown image of interest, such as the absorption coefficient in tissue to locate tumors in the body. Using a mathematical (forward) model to predict measurements given a parametrization of the tissue, we minimize the misfit between predicted and actual measurements up to a given noise level. The main computational bottleneck in such inverse problems is the repeated evaluation of this large-scale forward model, which corresponds to solving large linear systems for each source and frequency at each optimization step. Moreover, to efficiently compute derivative information, we need to solve, repeatedly, linear systems with the adjoint for each detector and frequency. As rapid advances in technology allow for large numbers of sources and detectors, these problems become computationally prohibitive. In this thesis, we introduce two methods to drastically reduce this cost. To efficiently implement Newton methods, we extend the use of simultaneous random sources to reduce the number of linear system solves to include simultaneous random detectors. Moreover, we combine simultaneous random sources and detectors with optimized ones that lead to faster convergence and more accurate solutions. We can use reduced order models (ROM) to drastically reduce the size of the linear systems to be solved in each optimization step while still solving the inverse problem accurately. However, the construction of the ROM bases still incurs a substantial cost. We propose to use randomization to drastically reduce the number of large linear solves needed for constructing the global ROM bases without degrading the accuracy of the solution to the inversion problem. Los datos utilizados para modelar el desarrollo de la infraestructura de transporte y la estructura espacial con el concepto de DOT. Il mio progetto di dottorato è stato focalizzato sui semiconduttori organici per applicazioni fotovoltaiche e di fotorivelazione. Inizialmente ho lavorato sul controllo morfologico di blende binarie di molecole organiche e fullereni usando la cosiddetta strategia dei pigmenti latenti. In particolare ho lavorato sull'ingenierizzazione dello strato attivo di celle solari organiche a eterogiunzione. Ho dimostrato una nuova strategia per controllare la segregazione di fase in film sottili di molecole elettron donatrici e fullereni, introducendo nel sistema un network di legami di idrogeno attivato termicamente. Successivamente ho studiato i processi di accumulazione di carica all’interfaccia tra acqua e un semiconduttore polimerico per applicazioni biomediche per mezzo di nanocristalli colloidali biemissivi con alta sensibilità verso agenti elettronattrattori. In fine, ho dedicato l’ultima parte del mio lavoro all’approfondimento delle possibili applicazioni di questa classe di nanocristalli come sensori raziometrici di pH intracellulare e come vernici per il monitoraggio ottico della pressione., My PhD has been focused on organic semiconductors for photovoltaics and photodetecting applications. Initially, I worked on the control of the morphology in binary blends of small organic molecules and fullerenes using the so called latent pigment approach. Subsequently, I investigated the charge accumulation and polarization effect occurring at the interface between water and a polymeric semiconductor used as optical component in retinal prosthesis by means of inorganic colloidal nanocrystals featuring a ratiometric sensing ability for electron withdrawing agents. As a last part of the work, I focalized on the applications of these nanocrystals as ratiometric sensors for intracellular pH probing and pressure optical monitoring. Specifically, during the first part of my PhD, I worked in the field of organic photovoltaics on the morphology engineering of the active layer of small molecules bulk-heterojunction solar cells. I demonstrated a new strategy to fine tune the phase-segregation in thin films of a suitably functionalized electron donor blended with fullerene derivatives by introducing in the system a post-deposition thermally activated network of hydrogen bonds that leads to improved stability and high crystallinity. Moreover, this process increases the carrier mobility of the donor species and allows for controlling the size of segregated domains resulting in an improved efficiency of the photovoltaic devices. This work revealed the great potential of the latent hydrogen bonding strategy that I subsequently exploited to fabricate nanometric semiconductive features on the film surface by using a very simple maskless lithographic technique. To do so, I focalized a UV laser into a confocal microscope and used the objective as a “brush” to thermically induce a localized hydrogen bonding driven crystallization with diffraction limited resolution. This artifact provides the fully mechanized proof of strong normalization for D_{<:} , a variant of (Dependent Object Types) DOT (Rompf & Amin, 2016) that excludes recursive functions and recursive types. The intersection type and recursive self type are further integrated, moving towards DOT. The key proof idea follows the method of Girard (Girard, 1972) and Tait (Tait, 1967).

The Dependent Object Types (DOT) family of calculi has been proposed as a new theoretic foundation for Scala and similar languages, unifying functional programming, object oriented programming and ML-style module systems. Following the recent type soundness proof for DOT, the present paper aims to establish stronger meta-theoretic properties. The main result is a fully mechanized proof of strong normalization for D_<:, a variant of DOT that excludes recursive functions and recursive types. We further discuss techniques and challenges for adding recursive types while maintaining strong normalization, and demonstrate that certain variants of recursive self types can be integrated successfully.

En aquest treball es vol contribuir a la investigació de les 2-estructures mitjançant l’aportació d’una eina que faciliti el desenvolupament de treballs futurs que es fonamentin en la utilització de la teoria de les 2-estructures per a l’anàlisi de dades relacionals. La teoria de les 2-estructures proporciona una infraestructura matemàtica per a la descomposició dels grafs. Permet representar múltiples grafs en una sola estructura algebraica, una 2-estructura, que es divideix en una descomposició única de 2-estructures més simples. Durant el treball, s’ha dut a terme un estudi amb dues finalitats: - El disseny i la implementació d’un paquet de software que analitzi i representi visualment les principals estructures involucrades en la teoria de les 2-estructures. - La investigació i el desenvolupament de possibles aplicacions de les 2-estructures en l’anàlisi de dades relacionals que formen part de les bases de dades relacionals.

Construction of metal oxide nanoparticles as anodes is of special interest for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The main challenge lies in their rapid capacity fading caused by the structural degradation and instability of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer during charge/discharge process. Herein, we address these problems by constructing a novel-structured SnO2-based anode. The novel structure consists of mesoporous clusters of SnO2 quantum dots (SnO2 QDs), which are wrapped with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets. The mesopores inside the clusters provide enough room for the expansion and contraction of SnO2 QDs during charge/discharge process while the integral structure of the clusters can be maintained. The wrapping RGO sheets act as electrolyte barrier and conductive reinforcement. When used as an anode, the resultant composite (MQDC-SnO2/RGO) shows an extremely high reversible capacity of 924 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 100 mA g−1, superior capacity retention (96%), and outstanding rate performance (505 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g−1). Importantly, the materials can be easily scaled up under mild conditions. Our findings pave a new way for the development of metal oxide towards enhanced lithium storage performance.

BackgroundAlthough directly observed therapy (DOT) is recommended worldwide for monitoring anti-tuberculosis treatment, transportation and personnel requirements limit its use.ObjectiveTo evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of 'video DOT' (VDOT), which allows patients to record and transmit medication ingestion via videos watched remotely by health care providers to document adherence.MethodsWe conducted a single-arm trial among tuberculosis (TB) patients in San Diego, California, USA, (n = 43) and Tijuana, Mexico (n = 9) to represent high- and low-resource settings. Pre-/post-treatment interviews assessed participant characteristics and experiences. Adherence was defined as the proportion of observed doses to expected doses.ResultsThe mean age was 37 years (range 18-86), 50% were male, and 88% were non-Caucasian. The mean duration of VDOT use was 5.5 months (range 1-11). Adherence was similar in San Diego (93%) and Tijuana (96%). Compared to time on in-person DOT, 92% preferred VDOT, 81% thought VDOT was more confidential, 89% never/rarely had problems recording videos, and 100% would recommend VDOT to others. Seven (13%) participants were returned to in-person DOT and six (12%) additional participants had their phones lost, broken or stolen.ConclusionsVDOT was feasible and acceptable, with high adherence in both high- and low-resource settings. Efficacy and cost-effectiveness studies are needed.

Nonlinear parametric inverse problems appear in several prominent applications; one such application is Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) in medical image reconstruction. Such inverse problems present huge computational challenges, mostly due to the need for solving a sequence of large-scale discretized, parametrized, partial diferential equations (PDEs) in the forward model. In this paper, we show how interpolatory parametric model reduction can significantly reduce the cost of the inversion process in DOT by drastically reducing the computational cost of solving the forward problems. The key observation is that function evaluations for the underlying optimization problem may be viewed as transfer function evaluations along the imaginary axis; a similar observation holds for Jacobian evaluations as well. This motivates the use of system-theoretic model order reduction methods. We discuss the construction and use of interpolatory parametric reduced models as surrogates for the full forward model. Within the DOT setting, these surrogate models can approximate both the cost functional and the associated Jacobian with very little loss of accuracy while significantly reducing the cost of the overall inversion process. Four numerical examples illustrate the effciency of the proposed approach. Although we focus on DOT in this paper, we believe that our approach is applicable much more generally.

The code was tested on the NVIDIA Tesla S2050 GPU and Intel Xeon Phi 3120A coprocessor. Due to the nature of the AXPY function, only two versions were implemented, the routine to be executed by the CPU and the kernel to be executed on the previously mentioned devices. It was studied how they perform for different vector’s sizes. Their results show the NVIDIA architecture better suited for the smaller vectors sizes and the Intel architecture for the larger vector’s sizes. For the DOT and SpMV functions, there are three versions implemented. The first is the CPU routine, the second one is an OpenCL kernel that uses local memory and the third one is an OpenCL kernel that only uses global memory. The kernels that use local memory are tested by varying the size of the work-group; the kernels that only uses global memory are tested by varying the arrays size. In the case of the first ones, the results show the optimum work-group size and that the NVIDIA architecture benefits from the use of local memory. For the latter kernels, the results show that larger computational loads benefits the Intel architecture.

BackgroundAlthough directly observed therapy (DOT) is recommended worldwide for monitoring anti-tuberculosis treatment, transportation and personnel requirements limit its use.ObjectiveTo evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of 'video DOT' (VDOT), which allows patients to record and transmit medication ingestion via videos watched remotely by health care providers to document adherence.MethodsWe conducted a single-arm trial among tuberculosis (TB) patients in San Diego, California, USA, (n = 43) and Tijuana, Mexico (n = 9) to represent high- and low-resource settings. Pre-/post-treatment interviews assessed participant characteristics and experiences. Adherence was defined as the proportion of observed doses to expected doses.ResultsThe mean age was 37 years (range 18-86), 50% were male, and 88% were non-Caucasian. The mean duration of VDOT use was 5.5 months (range 1-11). Adherence was similar in San Diego (93%) and Tijuana (96%). Compared to time on in-person DOT, 92% preferred VDOT, 81% thought VDOT was more confidential, 89% never/rarely had problems recording videos, and 100% would recommend VDOT to others. Seven (13%) participants were returned to in-person DOT and six (12%) additional participants had their phones lost, broken or stolen.ConclusionsVDOT was feasible and acceptable, with high adherence in both high- and low-resource settings. Efficacy and cost-effectiveness studies are needed.

Nonlinear parametric inverse problems appear in several prominent applications; one such application is Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) in medical image reconstruction. Such inverse problems present huge computational challenges, mostly due to the need for solving a sequence of large-scale discretized, parametrized, partial diferential equations (PDEs) in the forward model. In this paper, we show how interpolatory parametric model reduction can significantly reduce the cost of the inversion process in DOT by drastically reducing the computational cost of solving the forward problems.
