This thesis explores the lived experiences of disadvantaged young people in their journey toward self-actualization, as well as how participatory research can contribute to this. It is centered around three PAR-projects and builds on a care ethical and participatory action research design. The participants are young people (n=98) who are in one way or another care-dependent: children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), girls in secured facilities who had experienced or were at risk of sexual exploitation, and young adults with developmental language disorder (DLD). In each study, the participants iteratively reflected their experiences and needs for their daily lives as they also created awareness how society can be more responsive to this. The participatory dialogues revealed that disadvantaged young people feel that others do not take them as they are, as they constantly have to adjust themselves to be accepted (identity politics). Furthermore, they also feel they have to act different to get the care that they need (care politics). They need to magnify their capabilities to get opportunities for self-actualization and to magnify their disadvantages so they can be acknowledged as ‘care-dependent’, a prerequisite to receive professional support. They call for more space to be who they genuinely are and to get the care that is adjusted to their needs. Overall, I bring to the attention that young people need—and deserve—a multipolar society that provides spaces for their personal capabilities, needs and perspectives, where being normal stands for being unique. This is a step toward combatting stigma that causes young people’s feeling of embarrassment and their hard work to be acknowledged, accepted and valued as important citizens in society. This report provides an overview of how the Kenyan dairy sector performs in three analytical domains: the robustness of the supply chains, the reliability of institutional governance and the resilience of the innovation system. Analysis is by literature review, stakeholder interviews and a validation workshop guided by a SWOT framework to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The findings inform the existing opportunities and challenges that potentially impede growth in the sector. The report is a first step towards documenting and sharing insights that support the move towards a more Robust, Reliable and Resilient (3R) dairy sector. The findings and recommendations presented will guide policy engagement and action in the transition of Dutch government bilateral engagement in Kenya from development aid–support to a trade approach in the agricultural sector, with a focus on partnering opportunities to drive competitive market-oriented dairy sector development that attracts investments.

Duo’s van derdejaars ergotherapiestudenten, volwassenen met chronische fysieke beperkingen en een tweetal docenten hebben nagedacht over wat voor hun beelden en betekenissen zijn bij het begrip ‘eigen regie’. De beelden laten zien dat ‘eigen regie’ persoonlijk is en veelzijdig, en veel meer dan alleen keuzes maken.

Die dwong bedrijven met assimilatiebelichting om de verticale lichtuitstoot drastisch te reduceren. De laatste aanpassing dateert van 1 januari 2013, toen het Besluit glastuinbouw werd vervangen door een Activiteitenbesluit. De lichtparagraaf biedt wat meer ruimte voor maatwerk, maar is op enkele punten strenger. Wat zijn de globale spelregels?

Brief aan de Tweede Kamer waarin staat dat staatssecretaris Sharon Dijksma van Economische Zaken wil dat bepaalde toepassingen van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen uit de neonicotinoïdegroep beperkt worden vanwege risico voor bijen. Zij wil die inperking bij voorkeur Europees regelen omdat dat het meest effectief is. Maar als de Europese Commissie niet met maatregelen komt, wil zij dat het College voor de toelating van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen en biociden (Ctgb) nationale maatregelen neemt.

Dit naar aanleiding van haar inbreng in de Raad van 28 januari 2013 en de conceptvoorstellen vanuit de Europese Commissie (EC). De EC wil het gebruik van een aantal toepassingen van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen beperken vanwege risico voor bijen. Het gaat om 3 neonicotinoïden. Deze middelen mogen dan niet meer gebruikt worden bij gewassen die aantrekkelijk zijn voor bijen, zoals bijvoorbeeld maïs. Ook wil de EC de verkoop en het gebruik van met deze stoffen behandeld zaad verbieden.

Een mooie buxushaag in de tuin staan? Het kan zo maar zijn dat deze zijn oorsprong vindt op de sociale werkplaats. Op de Biesplanken Kwekerijen in Horst worden door ruim honderd mensen met een afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt boomkwekerijstekken geproduceerd. De sfeer op de werkvloer is uitermate gemoedelijk, maar – net als op ieder ander bedrijf – moet ook hier gewoon gewerkt worden. Jaarlijks worden zo’n 11 miljoen stekken afgeleverd.

The problem of the parasitic weed striga (Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth.) has worsened for African farmers, in conjunction with degrading soil fertility. An analysis of the striga problem showed that scientists, policy makers and farmers conceptualise striga differently. Whether striga is viewed as a weed or a symptom of degraded soils raises two questions: Should farmers control striga, even when the impact on yields would be negligible? Or should fertility enhancement, leading to higher yields, be their focus, even when not accompanied by an immediate reduction in striga? This study seeks to understand how organic matter inputs affect nutrient dynamics, sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) production and striga abundance. Surveys in northern Cameroon showed that striga infestation increased over the past two decades. Increased land pressure led to reduced fallow periods and enhanced cereal (mono-) cropping. Reduced access to fertiliser and manure hampered options to improve soil fertility. Yields from farmers’ fields did not correlate with striga incidence, confirming farmers’ prioritisation of soil fertility, weeds, and labour as production constraints, rather than striga. The entry point to tackle low yields and the worsening of the striga situation should follow farmers’ priority of alleviating low soil fertility. Whether and how soil fertility improvement, through organic matter, enhances agricultural productivity and reduces striga, was investigated in field experiments. Organic matter amendments significantly depressed striga seed survival, with the strongest effect achieved at higher quality; presumably due to higher microbial activity. Waterschappen, provincies en het Rijk investeren veel in het voorkomen van overstromingen. Desondanks blijft er altijd een (kleine) kans op overstromingen. Many organizations in Ethiopia have promoted exotic multipurpose fodder tree species particularly Sesbania sesban for livestock feed and soil improvement. Despite the apparent benefits, the number of farmers planting these trees was low. Moreover, some farmers feeding Sesbania sesban reported reproduction problems in sheep. The latter was supported by a few short term reproduction studies conducted in Ethiopia. The present thesis was conducted to assess farmers’ perceptions about multipurpose fodder trees and about constraints to adoption, and to study effects of long-term feeding of Sesbania sesban on sheep performance. The farmers’ perception was studied by a field survey among 235 farm households from three district with different dominant farming systems (wheat, teff or coffee as the major crop) and the sheep performance studies were a series of experiments at the International Livestock Research Centre in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia. Farmers planted exotic multipurpose fodder trees for their feed value. The valuation for other purposes (soil and water conservation, use as fuel wood) depended on cropping system, vegetation cover and availability of alternative local fodder trees. Major constraints to adoption were agronomic problems, low multipurpose value, and land shortage. Farmers’ decision making criteria to adopt multipurpose fodder trees encompassed multiple objectives: farmers preferred local fodder trees to exotics for biomass production, multi-functionality, life span, and compatibility to the cropping system. In terms of feed value, ease of propagation, and growth potential local fodder trees were ranked lower than or comparable to exotics. A significant correlation was observed between farmers’ feed value score of a fodder tree species and the crude protein content assessed in the laboratory. The number of Sesbania sesban trees currently planted on-farm was about 30% of the recommended number for meat or milk production. Despite some farmers (11.8% of users)

In dit onderzoek is nagegaan of het stelsel van productierechten voor varkens en pluimvee of aspecten daarvan al voor het voorziene tijdstraject (uiterlijk 2015) kan worden opgeheven. De hoofdconclusie is dat dit, ook in 2015, risico's met zich meebrengt met betrekking tot het overschrijden van het door de EU voor Nederland vastgestelde stikstof- en fosfaatproductieplafond als niet sterker wordt ingezet op het op individueel ondernemersniveau stimuleren van het verminderen van de stikstof- en fosfaatexcretie per dier en verhoging van de aanvoer van mest op bijvoorbeeld akkerbouwbedrijven.

All vertebrate embryos pass through a developmental period of remarkably low morphological variability. This period has been called phylotypic period. During the phylotypic period, organogenesis takes place, including blood vessel development. Before the phylotypic period, the embryos rely on diffusion for the internal oxygen transport. Diffusion, however, is an efficient way of transport only over small distances. Analytical models were constructed to investigate whether physical constraints ( i.e. diffusional limitations) demand the development of an internal oxygen transport system as the embryos grow bigger. These models showed that teleost embryos are smaller than their theoretically maximum size during the phylotypic period, based on oxygen diffusion. Lack of oxygen does therefore not demand blood vessel development. Subsequently, numerical models of oxygen diffusion in a zebrafish embryo ( Danio rerio ) were developed, thereby including the realistic shape of the embryo. These models were tested and refined with oxygen micro-electrode measurements of the oxygen partial pressure profile in and around the zebrafish embryo. This numerical-experimental procedure revealed a high oxygen permeability in the yolk of the zebrafish embryo. Furthermore, lowest oxygen partial pressures were found in the head region with a gradient of posteriorly increasing oxygen partial pressures along the midline of the embryo. The three-dimensional oxygen partial pressure profile was compared with the expression pattern of the angiogenic factor ( vegf ), which is known to be expressed under hypoxic conditions. The apparent colocalization of low oxygen partial pressure and the expression of vegf suggests oxygen to play an important role in regulating blood vessel development rather than posing a direct request for its development.

Er zijn 10 klachtlocaties onderscheiden in vijf groepen; 1. nek, schouders of hoog in de rug, 2. elleboog of pols/hand, 3. lage rug, 4. heup of knie, 5. enkel of voet . Naast de periode-prevalentie (12 maanden) en de punt prevalentie (Pp) zijn diverse kenmerken(duur, ernst, beloop) en consequenties (voor gezondheid, zorg en werk) van de klachten vastgelegd. De zelf-gerapporteerde prevalentie van pijnklachten is zeer hoog. De top drie van klachten is: 1. lage rug (Pp=26,9%) 2. schouders (Pp=20,9%), 3. nek. Additional data included demographics, characteristics of the complaints (duration, severity, course) and consequences (perceived health, (work) disability, use of health care services). Data were weighted to present data on the Dutch population aged 25 years and over.The top 3 of self-reported musculoskeletal complaints was: 1. low back pain, Pp=26.9%, 2. shoulder pain, Pp=20.9% 3. neck pain, Pp=20.6%. In most cases the pain was described as continuous or repetitive, non-severe pain. In every 3 out of 10 cases the pain complaints were accompanied with limitation in daily life. Between 33% and 42% of those with complaints consulted their general physician for their pain. With exception of those who are work disabled, general socio-demographic characteristics cannot be used to identify high risk groups. Musculoskeletal pain is common among every subgroup in the population and varies from a non-severe pain complaint to a severe health problem with consequences for work and use of health care.

Het Nederlandse WHO Collaborating Centre is in 1989 opgericht. De WHO publiceerde een eerste voorstel voor een herziene ICIDH in juli 1997, het Beta-1 voorstel, onder de titel Internationale classificatie voor stoornissen, activiteiten en participatie. Het commentaar op dit voorstel en de resultaten van veldstudies werden gebruikt voor het opstellen van het Beta-2 voorstel, dat in 1999 werd uitgegeven. De nieuwe titel van dit voorstel: Internationale classificatie van het menselijk funktioneren, vormt een weergave van het opnieuw structureren van de classificatie en het opnieuw bewoorden van haar klassen. De classificatie is zoveel mogleijk in neurtrale termen geformuleerd. De problemen in het funktioneren worden vastgelegd met behulp van typeringen. De Nederlandse vertaling van het beta-2 voorstel is uitgegeven in december 1999 en is op aanvraag aan ongeveer 3000 personen en organisaties verstuurd. As much as possible the classification is formulated in neutral terms. Problems in the Dutch translation of the Beta-2 draft was issued in December 1999 and has been sent out on request to about 3000 persons and organisations. The present report summarises the activities of the Dutch Centre between August 1999 and September 2000, specifying the comments on the Beta-2 draft and the results of field trials.

WHO issued a first proposal for revised ICIDH in July 1997, the Beta-1 draft, under the title International Classification of Impairments, Activities and Participation. Comments on this draft and results of field trials were used for the drafting of a second proposal, the Beta-2 draft that was issued in 1999. The new title of the Beta-2 draft, International Classification of Functioning and Disability, reflects the restructuring of the classification and the rewording of its classes. As much as possible the classification is formulated in neutral terms. Problems in the Dutch translation of the Beta-2 draft was issued in December 1999 and has been sent out on request to about 3000 persons and organisations. The present report summarises the activities of the Dutch Centre between August 1999 and September 2000, specifying the comments on the Beta-2 draft and the results of field trials.

RIVM rapport:Klachten van het bewegingsapparaat vormen een belangrijk volksgezondheidsprobleem maar geschikte gegevensbronnen betreffende de Nederlandse bevolking zijn schaars. Op basis van de landelijke studie naar klachten en aandoeningen van het bewegingsapparaat (de KAB-studie) is een analyse gemaakt van prevalenties, consequenties en risicogroepen van pijnklachten van het bewegingsapparaat in de bevolking. De KAB-studie is een postenquete onderzoek bij een aselecte steekproef uit de Nederlandse bevolking van 25 jaar en ouder, uitgevoerd door het RIVM in samenwerking met het CBS. Er zijn 10 klachtlocaties onderscheiden in vijf groepen; 1. nek, schouders of hoog in de rug, 2. elleboog of pols/hand, 3. lage rug, 4. heup of knie, 5. enkel of voet . Naast de periode-prevalentie (12 maanden) en de punt prevalentie (Pp) zijn diverse kenmerken(duur, ernst, beloop) en consequenties (voor gezondheid, zorg en werk) van de klachten vastgelegd. De zelf-gerapporteerde prevalentie van pijnklachten is zeer hoog. De top drie van klachten is: 1. lage rug (Pp=26,9%) 2. schouders (Pp=20,9%), 3. nek. (Pp=20,6%) Bij vrouwen is de prevalentie hoger dan bij mannen. De meeste klachten komen op alle leeftijden veel voor, maar de pijnklachten van knie en heup nemen duidelijk toe met de leeftijd. In de meeste gevallen is de klacht voortdurend of regelmatig aanwezig en gekarakteriseerd als 'lichte/zeurende pijn'. In 3 van de 10 gevallen gaan de klachten gepaard met verhindering in de uitvoering van de normale bezigheden. Het beroep op de gezondheidszorg is hoog en ziekteverzuim wordt vaak gemeld. Op basis van algemene sociaal-demografische kenmerken zijn geen duidelijke risicogroepen te onderscheiden behalve de groep die arbeidsongeschikt is., Musculoskeletal complaints represent a big public health problem however data on the total population are scarce.Using cross-sectional data from a national population-based study on persons of 25 years and olderw we give estimates on prevalences of different musculoskeletal complaints, their consequences and risk groups in the Dutch population.The period prevalence (12 months) and point prevalence (Pp) of pain complaints of ten different anatomical sites were assessed in five groups: 1. neck, shoulder or higher part of the back, 2. elbow or wrist/hand, 3. lower part of the back, 4. hip or knee, 5. ankle and foot. Additional data included demographics, characteristics of the complaints (duration, severity, course) and consequences (perceived health, (work) disability, use of health care services). Data were weighted to present data on the Dutch population aged 25 years and over.The top 3 of self-reported musculoskeletal complaints was: 1. low back pain, Pp=26.9%, 2. shoulder pain, Pp=20.9% 3. neck pain, Pp=20.6%. In most cases the pain was described as continuous or repetitive, non-severe pain. In every 3 out of 10 cases the pain complaints were accompanied with limitation in daily life. Between 33% and 42% of those with complaints consulted their general physician for their pain. With exception of those who are work disabled, general socio-demographic characteristics cannot be used to identify high risk groups. Musculoskeletal pain is common among every subgroup in the population and varies from a non-severe pain complaint to a severe health problem with consequences for work and use of health care.

Het opnieuw structureren van de classificatie en het opnieuw bewoorden van haar klassen wordt in een nieuwe titel weergegeven: Internationale classificatie van stoornissen, activiteiten en participatie. Het voorstel en het tussentijds verslag zullen in Nederland in twee vergaderingen worden besproken. Een definitief verslag zal begin 1999 verschijnen., The International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH, Geneva 1980, 19932) wil be revised by WHO and its Collaborating Centres for the ICIDH. The Dutch Centre was instituted in 1989. It has drawn up an interim report on the proposal for a new ICIDH that was issued in July 1997 for field trials. The restructuring of the classification and the rewording of its classes is reflected in a new title: International Classification of Impairments, Activities and Participation. The proposal and the interim report will be discussed in two meetings in the Netherlands. An updated version of this report will appear early 1999.
